Little Howard and the Magic Pencil of Life and Death
Mark Thomas - 100 Acts of Minor Dissent
T
Following the success of their TV show ‘Little Howard’s Big Question’ (CBBC) real human Big Howard and animated six-year-old Little Howard bring their interactive stand-up, 3D animation show to the Theatre Royal. Little Howard has discovered the pencil that drew him. But, on the other end of this magical pencil of life is the eraser of death, and a dark force is at large determined to rub the cheeky chap out for good. And, as if that wasn’t enough, Big Howard has had a real-life baby who is getting a little too much attention! Can Little Howard escape his supernatural nemesis?
T
Mark Thomas is well versed in the art of creative mayhem and over the years his troublemaking has changed laws, cost companies millions and annoyed those who most deserved to be. Now he returns to what he does best, mischief- joyously bad behaviour with a purpose. After his award winning show Bravo Figaro Mark sets himself the task of committing 100 Acts of Minor Dissent in the space of a year. Mark catalogues everything from the smallest and silliest gesture to the grandest confrontations and the results are subversive, hilarious, mainly legal and occasionally inspiring.
How will he get rid of this pesky new arrival? Who knows… but there will be danger, drama and a lot of laughs on the way.

Moses is a cantankerous 2 foot high puppet, with a cardboard head, who lives on a table. And he’s got a problem. All he ever gets asked to perform is fairy tales or children’s birthday parties, and he’s fed up with it. He’s an artist! He’s a serious puppet! So tonight, for one show only, the table is his and he is going to perform an epic story. The final 12 hours of the life of Moses, in real time, on his table. Unique and very funny, this is improvised puppetry like you have never seen before. Our table-top philosopher explains the nature of puppetry, has disagreements with his puppeteers, shows off his dancing skills, examines the bible and has an unfortunate mishap with an invisible running machine. Along the way he gains a theatre full of fans who then watch his painful attempts to rescue his show from chaos. The Table premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2011 where it won a Fringe First. This is award winning, epic puppetry inspired by Beckett, the Bible and Ikea. It’s one hundred and fifty years since Alice first decided that the best way to relieve her boredom was to dive headfirst into a giant rabbit hole (as you do). Tonight, by order of the queen, it’s time for the card soldiers to give us their perspective on her journey into their surreal, dangerous but ultimately hilarious world. Lewis Carroll’s timeless classic is brought to life with puppetry, physical theatre, live music and that sense of the absurd that only lives in this wonderful world of Wonder! “What is so inspiring about this group is not simply the well-executed performance, but the unification of this ensemble” Remotegoat Running Time:1 hour 40 mins ( + interval) Ages: All. Margate Town Read - Finale!
The Positively Last Performance
T
“The Positively Last Performance was born and raised in Margate. The idea came from Will Wollen, then Artistic Director of the beautiful Theatre Royal: a book in praise of the town, past and present, created with the help of the local people.
T
But this is a made-up story. I invented its plot and I invented the ghosts who haunt The Royal, which is not falling down and never has been. No mould grows on the gilded walls; no donkeys poo in its dressing rooms…And who am I to say if ghosts haunt its beautiful auditorium. But books have become plays. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Gracie’s story might one day be acted out on this stage. Then maybe you and I (and they) will be there together to see it.?” Geraldine McCaughrean
Come along and celebrate the finale of the Margate Town Read. The whole community came together to read and enjoy “The Positively Last Performance” by Geraldine McCaughrean during February and March. This is your chance to meet the author and to join in with some great fun activities. Find out why the Guardian said “What a fantastic and inspiring idea to unite a community and a children’s author in this way. The Margatians must be thrilled with this charming and skilful story, woven together from their fact and McCaughrean’s fiction.”
Geraldine’s book is available now in hardback and in paperback from February. You can download OUP’s Reading Notes from our website - ideal for pupils in Years 5, 6, 7 & 8. You can borrow the hardback from Margate Library - or buy your own copy from our Box Office for £12 (Plus £3 postage if required).

After sorting out politics (Hitler’s Moustache), religion (Christ on a Bike), love (What is Love, Anyway?) and penises (Talking Cock), Herring returns to tackles the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveller returns (apart from Jesus and that canoe bloke). Is death a tragedy or an excuse to have an extended lie-in? Are we snuffed out or forced to endure eternity without bodily pleasures? Death is inevitable, so let’s laugh in its face while our hearts still beat and our jaws are still attached.
Two knackermen, a horse, a gun and a tiny metropolis full of death. Can the way we kill animals teach us anything about our own demise? Combining beautiful puppetry, new writing and documentary material, this award-winning show tells a moving and darkly comic tale about the only certainty in life - Death.

La Traviata
A new play by Paul Hodson
By Giuseppe Verdi Directed by Robin Norton-Hale
T
The story of Violetta, a so-called ‘fallen woman’ who sacrifices her own happiness for the sake of her lover’s family and future, La Traviata has been thrilling audiences for generations.
T
Set in 1928 Atlantic City in the prohibition era of speakeasies and bootlegging, Violetta’s lover Alfredo, a passionate young man whose optimism has been shaken by time at the front in the first world war, Violetta’s protector ‘the Baron’ a gang boss, and Alfredo’s father a crooked politician, this new production reveals the hypocrisy and heartache behind the glittering façade of parties. Featuring a stunning young cast whose acting abilities are more than a match for their vocal talents, Verdi’s sumptuous melodies are accompanied by a trio of clarinet, cello and piano. With a new libretto in English, La Traviata is brought to you by the Olivier award-winning company behind La Bohème, The Barber of Seville (or Salisbury) and L’Elisir d’Amore.
2001, the night before England thrash Germany 5-1. Four England fans meet for the first time on a campsite in Munich. Drink is drunk, songs are sung, secrets are exposed. 1945, Alf and Ted march through Europe for home, fighting fascism while dreaming of a new England. Tonight, live on your stage, stand up comic Eddy Brimson offers a funny, hard-hitting insight on English society, football and comedy today. England Away is an upfront, comic play about passion, patriotism and ‘Englishness’. From the author of Meeting Joe Strummer, Way Out West and Fever Pitch.

The Gallery is unsuitable for people with mobility difficulties or vertigo. Please specify any special requirements to the Box Office at time of booking. For further information on disabled access please visit the DisabledGo website.
Sponsoring a seat in the Winter Gardens or Theatre Royal is a great way to support the Theatre; they make an ideal present, can be used to mark occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries or remember someone special who enjoyed happy times at the theatre. Your seat dedication on a brass plaque can be up to 10 words long and will remain on the seat for many years to come. Call 01843 292795 for further details.
• £20 every season could help expand our programme to schools • £5 a month could help a young person attend youth theatre for a term • £100 could support a local primary school in attending their first show • £500 could help us engage with new communities in the area
Gift Aid Any gift, however large or small, will make an enormous difference to what we can do. If you are a UK taxpayer you can even Gift Aid your donation. This allows Theatre Royal Margate to claim back 28p in every pound you donate from the Inland Revenue, at no extra cost to you – helping your donation help us even more.

Inspiration Inclusive (8-18yrs)
7-11s: Saturday afternoons 5pm-6pm (Harstdown Leisure Centre) 12 week terms, limited places: £50 per term
This group meets every Tuesday (5.00-6.50pm) during term time, and all are encouraged to break down the usual barriers of communication by learning some sign-language; working in diverse peer groups; and the biggest skill of all – to not only learn lines, physicality and cues but most importantly to support each other on and off stage so that no-one is ever left out.
11-16s: Tuesday evenings: 6pm-7.30pm (Theatre Royal) 12 week terms, limited places: £60 per term 16+: Wednesday evenings: 6pm-7.30pm (Theatre Royal) 12 week terms, limited places: £60 per term Further details: Martin Gibbons msgibbons@hotmail.co.uk, 07588 643255
We believe the only label for our group is ‘Multiabled’ We all have skills and potential, and together we can all realize our dreams - and as the name suggest EVERYONE! Led by Zoe and Peter Hammond alongside a large team of volunteers, all sessions are BSL signed. Members work towards a professionally supported show performed in the Theatre, the latest being A Grimm Affair this July. Term time only: £2.00 per session (voluntary subs), limited places. For more information about the group please email: Inspiration-inc@hotmail.co.uk or call 07792 684227 or 07792 684240. Further information on the Theatre Royal website.
Martin Gibbons, a professional actor, writer and director (who runs and leads the Theatre Royal Youth Theatre) says “As a practitioner I am interested in using theatre spaces as dream spaces. I don’t buy the realism and push for naturalism in theatre; the stage should go beyond the day to day, creating worlds that can only exist in the imagination. This totally influences my work”.
