Welcome to our latest theatres’ brochure And what a summer we’ve got lined up for you! This year you’ll see some changes to our traditional programme. To add to our jam-packed season, the town will also see the much anticipated reopening of Dreamland. With the Theatres, Turner Contemporary celebrating 4 glorious years, and now Dreamland on line, not to mention the incredibly diverse range of arts and leisure activities on offer in the town itself, Margate really is the place to visit to keep the whole family entertained this summer! You want comedy? We do comedy! At the Winter Gardens you’re in for an international treat in June as we welcome the American humourist, comedian, author, and radio contributor David Sedaris. There’s an opportunity to meet him before and after the show too. The comedy continues with the return of Jim Davidson. We’re pleased to welcome him back here, to a town and venue that he has strong ties with. Over at the Theatre Royal, we kick off May with our very own Guvnor Al Murray, performing a special one-off gig in aid of Pilgrims Hospices Thanet, closely followed by the splendidly Scottish Kevin Bridges, performing a warm up show for his autumn arena tour. Summer visitors include Joe Pasquale and Jethro, and in September we have a rare migrant to the South, the brilliant Manchester comedian Justin Moorhouse. There’s an incredible range of dance over at the Theatre Royal this summer. We have everything from Central Ballet visiting us for the first time and Ballet Theatre UK’s enchanting “Aladdin”, to Jasmin Vardimon’s Young Company JV2 and spectacular all male contemporary dance group Company Chameleon.

2

Summer 2015 will be the first year in decades that the Winter Gardens will not be hosting a traditional “Summer Season Show”. This was a tough decision to make but times and tastes are changing. So we have revamped our summer programme and instead will host a range of events, with something for everyone. We begin with our inclusion in the town-wide Margate Soul Weekend, when after two evenings of DJs and artists, the Winter Gardens will host the Grand Finale party, featuring Roy Ayers and Glenn Jones. Then we bring you something brand new and never attempted before at the Winter Gardens. From the team that brought you the sell-out “Zombie Apocalypse”, we are proud to present “TERMINATION!” This will be Kent’s largest indoor laser combat experience. We are sure that once you try Termination “you’ll be back” for more! When the smoke settles, we bring you the UK’s favourite Arcade, Indie & Retro video gaming expo “Play Margate”, perfect for all those gamers and fans of GEEK. To finish off, the Winter Gardens will hand the reigns over to Resort Studios to lead an artists’ take-over of the venue, drawing on our long and celebrated entertainment history. The week will include paintings, sculpture and performance for a wide audience, and will also feature the Winter Gardens Centenary Exhibition.

The Theatre Royal will be throwing open its doors again in September for a Heritage Open Weekend, and as part of this, will be collaborating with Dreamland to present an alternative guided walking tour of Margate Funny Peculiar. Created in Margate, for Margate, and based on stories about Margate, this will be great fun and is highly recommended….and as tour groups are small, it’s bound to sell out quickly! The return of the magical Tortoise in a Nutshell, who brought us “Feral in Margate” in March, is a real high point in the season. This time they present The Lost Things - a show for children inside a unique domed structure -actually on the stage! Places are limited to 40 per performance, so this is another must see show for everyone over 8. But of course it wouldn’t be summer without Shakespeare on the Beach. This year Changeling Theatre brings us audience favourite “Two Gentlemen of Verona”. So book yourselves a deckchair and settle down for another great show on Margate main sands. This year promises to be a summer like no other in Margate. And it’s all YOURS. Paul Palmer Entertainments and Facilities Manager Pam Hardiman Programme Manager

The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. “Sedaris isn’t a stand-up, or even much of a showman. But in his own dry and unassuming way, he’s one of the finest comic talents currently living on this planet.” The Guardian

“The songs are wonderfully witty and touching at the same time” Ruthie Henshall multi-award winning star of Les Miserables, Cats and Chicago

Theatre Royal Margate Associate Companies

Theatre Royal Margate will be supporting the following Kent based companies to create and present work to audiences in Margate and beyond. Mischievous Theatre, Third Party and StevensonThompson have all been chosen because they make relevant, exciting and accessible work which we want to see more of, especially here in Margate. We’re proud to be able to showcase their work at the Theatre Royal, with the ambition of helping them reach a wider audience. Mischievous Theatre CIC, based in Ramsgate and led by Clive Holland, was formed to create stimulating, provocative and mischievous theatre, to tour this work both nationally and internationally, and to encourage a greater involvement in the arts by the people of East Kent.

In collaboration with Third Party we have produced, to great acclaim, “The Sagas of Noggin the Nog”, which was a huge hit at the Edinburgh Festival and opens in May at the Theatre Royal, Brighton as part of the Brighton Festival. The five star reviewed show will tour nationally from October 2015. Mischievous presents a work in progress of their experimental new production “I Have Lost Myself” about the world of Alzheimer’s Disease, here in May. The company’s association with Theatre Royal Margate has enabled us to move forward with added confidence and conviction in our work. www.mischievoustheatre.co.uk Third Party has been producing touring theatre for twenty years in the UK and abroad, playing theatres, village halls, festivals and found spaces. The bulk of their recent work has been in collaboration with director John Wright and has featured strongly visual and physically expressive versions of classic plays. In 2009 they premiered their two language, two country co-production of “The False Servant” by Marivaux at the Theatre Royal Margate. In 2012, Third Party adapted the children’s classic The Sagas of Noggin the Nog for the stage, directed by John Wright. Following previews here at the Theatre

Royal, the show went to the Edinburgh Festival in August 2014 to rave reviews, including 4 stars from the Independent and The Stage. A national tour is hotly anticipated. Third Party and Mischievous Theatre are currently collaborating on a new and exciting project in search of new audiences for theatre…watch this space! www.thirdparty.org.uk Stevenson Thompson and the Moving Memory Company celebrate life-long creativity via projects that empower and equip older women with new performance skills. The company was created to challenge views of being an ‘old’ woman, of beauty, and to give older women the opportunity and a presence in the theatre world. Our work considers the funny side of things, the stuff of life. In order to reach

32 Margate Theatres Guide Summer 2015 | Booking Fee 50p per ticket in person/phone, £1.50 per ticket online

as diverse an audience as possible, we often performance in public spaces, such as the streets, as well as theatre spaces. Our in-house company, MovingMemory is a company of women aged between 52-82, who produce work that makes Jo-public think again. The work is inspired by the stories the women bring with them, or their views and experiences of the world. Like the women, the work is gutsy, funny and moving. We are delighted to be associates to the Theatre Royal and want to extend our work in Thanet. We are setting up a new group in Margate, so if you’re interested, please email stevensonthompson@gmail.com. www.stevensonthompson.com

Inspiration Inclusive (8-18yrs) This group meets every Tuesday (5.00-6.50pm) during term time, and all are encouraged to break down the usual barriers of communication by learning some sign-language; working in diverse peer groups; and the biggest skill of all – to not only learn lines, physicality and cues but most importantly to support each other on and off stage so that no-one is ever left out. We believe the only label for our group is ‘Multiabled’ We all have skills and potential, and together we can all realize our dreams - and as the name suggest EVERYONE! Martin Gibbons, a professional actor, writer and director (who runs and leads the Theatre Royal Youth Theatre) says “As a practitioner I am interested in using theatre spaces as dream spaces. I don’t buy the realism and push for naturalism in theatre; the stage should go beyond the day to day, creating worlds that can only exist in the imagination. This totally influences my work”.
