The Roundabout Festival

Welcome to our latest theatres’ brochure

For one week only, a pop-up arts festival is coming to Margate’s Winter Gardens. The summer is all but a distant memory and now we at Margate Theatres are poised to offer you a fabulous selection of live music, theatre, comedy, family shows and dance for the Autumn & Winter ahead. Though the temperature outside may be nippy, the entertainment inside is Red Hot!! We open with the Roundabout Festival – an exciting collaboration between our two venues. For a week in September, the Winter Gardens Main Hall will be home to this extraordinary wooden 168 seat theatre-in-the-round, coming to Margate direct from the Edinburgh Festival and packed full of bite sized entertainment for all tastes and ages. This is a first – so be sure to check it out. Live music always features strongly here in Margate and this season is no exception. We’re delighted to bring you the choice of quality acts spanning the decades from 60’s Gold and The Bay City Rollers through to Example and genres from the reggae/pop of UB40 to the contemporary folk of Bellowhead. Classical music is also represented with the highly anticipated return of Mid Wales Opera and their production of Carmen, directed by Jonathan Miller.

Grab those sides, comedy fans - we have some heavyweights making an appearance this autumn! The ever popular Jimmy Carr returns to the Winter Gardens with his brand new show, and following on his heels we see Frank Skinner and Omid Djalili - both featuring here for the first time. Over at the Theatre Royal, Michael McIntyre will be presenting work in progress, closely followed by Marcus Brigstocke, Dave Gorman, Seann Walsh and Germany’s funniest export Henning Wehn. And we have family fun for all ages with shows such as Captain Flinn and the Pirate Dinosaurs, Emily Brown and the Thing and One Giant Leap, all with tickets from a fiver. But if your young ‘uns would like a special treat – get them booked into our Half Term Theatre Tasters in October Half Term week. These drama activity days on the Theatre Royal stage sold out last year, so get in quick! New to the Winter Gardens this Halloween we have Zombie Apocalypse. Fans of horror films and all things scary will be in for a treat as we guide small groups through normally restricted areas of the venue to escape the Undead and to reach the safety of our secret tunnel. Are you brave enough?

After the success of last year, our Winter Wonderland themed Christmas Party nights return. This year we’ll be offering more dates and a new look to the evening’s entertainment. Continuing to the end of December we have our New Year’s Eve Celebrations. Both halls in the Winter Gardens will be offering two completely different evenings. These celebrations sold out in the last three years so book early to avoid disappointment! And of course Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without panto. And not one, but two! Margate Operatic Society returns to the Winter Gardens in early December with Rapunzel, and Polka Dot Pantomimes, who brought Cinderella to the Theatre Royal last year, are back with Christmas favourite Beauty and the Beast for the entire Christmas period. It’s all happening right here in Margate – come and join in the fun! Paul Palmer Entertainments and Facilities Manager Pam Hardiman Programme Manager

The Roundabout is a completely selfcontained 168-seat auditorium that flat packs into a single lorry and can pop up anywhere from theatres to school halls, sports centres to warehouses. And now it’s coming to the Winter Gardens. Showcasing a programme of comedy, theatre, dance and events for all ages, The Roundabout Festival is unmissable. So don’t. Miss it, that is. Tony Stockwell

Watching the Living

Heritage Open Days

The popular star of TV’s Street Psychic, Psychic Private Eyes and Psychic Academy, Tony Stockwell demonstrates his belief that those who have passed can communicate with their loved ones, all delivered with emotion, sensitivity and empathy. Remarkably compelling, amazingly detailed and always humorous. We hope that nobody can fail to come away untouched by the experience.

Based on two short stories by Daphne du Maurier. After the death of his wife, a long suffering husband feels a sense of freedom for the first time in years. But not for long. The apple tree in the garden has begun to flourish; growing and twisting into a macabre and all too familiar shape.

Dating back to 1787 and remodelled by the Victorians, the Theatre Royal is proud to be the second oldest working theatre in the UK, described by the Theatres Trust as “of major significance” and a Grade II* listed building.

Tony Stockwell is a Spiritualist Medium and spirit communication is part of his own religious belief, but we accept differing opinions exist regarding mediumship. Any demonstration of mediumship is an experiment and results are not guaranteed. Running Time: 2 hours (+ interval) Ages: 14+ at parents discretion Tickets: £21.00, 2nd tier £18.50, Friends £17

When Martin Carthy teamed up with Dave Swarbrick in 1966, the result was a new era of English instrumental folk music. When they parted in 1969 Dave joined Fairport Convention and his contribution to folk and folk/rock music is legendary and well documented. Meanwhile for more than 40 years, Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s best loved figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, from within the folk scene, and far beyond it. Together again, their performances together lack none of the fervour of earlier times.

One Night of Queen

Jimmy Carr Funny Business

Hey Presto

Aled Jones - Songs of Hope and Inspiration

Dave Gorman Gets Straight to the Point* (*The Powerpoint)

Hey, Presto! Is a brand new production based on the book by Nadia Shireen. Presto, the cat, is a very talented magician, so when he and his best friend Monty, the dog, join a funfair and start a magic show things look good for the duo. But fame goes to Monty’s head and soon Presto loses his friend and his show! Will true friendship prevail? Is there a touch of magic in the air? A heart-warming tale of aspiration, friendship, adventure and a little bit of mischief accompanied by catchy songs, this is the perfect treat for everyone aged 3 and up.

Aled Jones MBE - Singer, actor, author, broadcaster, TV presenter, musical theatre performer and part-time dancer invites you to spend a sensational evening with him. Accompanied by world class musicians the evening will feature an eclectic mix of songs and stories from Aled’s time in the public eye. Loved by the nation originally for his pure treble voice, Aled has recently celebrated over 27 years as a household name. Aled has 29 albums to his name - selling over 6.5 million to date.

Jimmy’s been described as ‘the hardest working man in comedy’. Which, let’s face facts, is not that impressive. It’s like being the ‘Tallest Dwarf’ or the ‘Healthiest Glaswegian’. Really not that big a deal. ‘Funny Business’ is Jimmy’s brand new stand up show. Come for the witty and incisive musings on the human condition; stay for the knob gags. In 2000, Gary Mullen won ITV’s “Stars In Their Eyes” Live Grand Final, with the largest number of votes ever received in the show’s history. The record of 864,838 votes was more than twice that of the runner-up. Gary began touring on his own and in 2002 formed a band ‘The Works’, to pay tribute to rock legends Queen. One Night of Queen is a spectacular live concert, recreating the look, sound, pomp and showmanship of arguably the greatest rock band of all time. This show will ROCK you! One Giant Leap

Longwave

The Dream Boys

Sixties Gold

One Giant Leap is an impossible attempt to bring the whole universe into a theatre and into our understanding, using a tennis ball, a wastepaper basket and a dash of theatrical invention. Iain Johnstone’s passionate solo performance takes us on a spin through the solar system and the history of humanity’s relationship with the heavens - and then back down to Earth. One Giant Leap is possibly one of the most ambitious works of children’s theatre ever created The Telegraph  Running Time: 1 hour 10mins no interval Ages: 10+ Tickets: £8, Concs £6, Friends £5, Schools £5 Family of 4 £24

Two scientists, stranded in the middle of nowhere. Living together in a rundown shed. Working together to try and make sense of the strange and hostile world that surrounds them. Nothing for company but an old wireless.

For lovers of Sixties music, this is the ultimate, and probably never to be repeated, line-up. Featuring record breaking Merseybeat band Gerry & The Pacemakers. The first act to reach No. 1 and the first act ever to top the charts with their first three singles.

But as the radio waves begin to rise up around them, will they sink or swim? Performed entirely without dialogue, Longwave is a seductively bleak comedy with a tender heart. “This wordless and highly eloquent 75-minute piece reels you in until there is no surrender…Tom Lyall and Jamie Wood are outstanding in a quiet, centred, unshowy sort of way” The Guardian  Running Time: 75mins no interval Ages: 12+ Tickets: £15, Friends £12, Under 25s £10, Schools £7.50

Also from Liverpool and tipped to be as big as The Beatles, The Searchers’ first single also went to No. 1 and led to five more Top 5 hits and a total of 128 weeks in the charts. After a massive sold out 2013 UK Tour, The Dreamboys are back in Margate with a brand new show and UK Tour for 2014.

This is one action packed night of Music, Muscle, Magic and Mayhem that will leave you breathless which you simply cannot afford to miss!!!

Not About Heroes

I Believe in Unicorns

Festival of Remembrance

Audiences have the opportunity to catch one of Tchaikovsky’s world famous classical ballets The Nutcracker when the highly acclaimed Vienna Festival Ballet company returns to town.

Not About Heroes is the unforgettable story of two of the finest ‘Great War’ poets, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, their friendship, their interdependency, their poetry.

The enchanting tale of The Nutcracker follows Clara and her nutcracker doll, which magically transforms into a princely soldier. Their adventures see the Prince and Clara combat the Mouse King and join the Sugar Plum Fairy on a wonderful trip to a Kingdom made entirely of sweets. “An excellent company of talented young dancers. Their energy and enthusiasm is breathtaking.” ENTS24.COM

The plot sees the Diamond Brothers Detective agency on a thrilling case to discover just what is so important about the box of Maltesers. It features a host of brilliant characters like: The Fat Man (who has lost a lot of weight), Gott & Himmel, Lauren Barcardi, Beatrice von Falkenberg and Betty Cleaner.

Kill the Beast are proud to present The Boy Who Kicked Pigs - their 5* adaptation of the darkly comic story by Dr Who’s Tom Baker. Promising beautiful projections, original music and over eight hats, it’s a gloriously grisly tale of one scoundrel’s attempt at infamy. “Inventive, clever, gruesome and hilarious... a twisted triumph and an unmissable debut”  What’s On Stage

As Henning’s assimilation is not yet complete he hasn’t lost his sense of Westphalian wonderment at the foibles of British society. Why does everybody want to be owned by a house? What’s wrong with having the Euro? And why hold society and government responsible for personal underachievement? You’ve only got yourself to blame for not being born into a better social class. The last two arena tours were superb but we missed some corners of the UK and a lot of people can’t travel hours to see a gig, especially on a week day. It’s a marathon tour, even for me but I’ve carefully chosen all the venues myself - some of which I’ve played in loads of time and others which I’ve never been to. The Theatre Royal, Margate is delighted to mark Shakespeare’s 450th birthday by throwing him the biggest party he has ever seen with the largest Shakespeare Schools Festival to date.

Something is keeping Emily Brown awake... Tall Stories (the company that brought you The Gruffalo) present their brand new show, based on the hugely popular book by Cressida Cowell (author of How to Train your Dragon) and Neal Layton.

The Shakespeare Schools Festival is the UK’s largest youth drama festival and enables over 1,000 primary, secondary, and special schools to stage abridged Shakespeare productions in their local professional theatre. 35,000 young people will take to professional stages across the UK.

One evening, Emily Brown and her old grey rabbit Stanley find a Thing crying outside their window. He just can’t get to sleep. Emily Brown and Stanley set off on incredible adventures to find the Thing’s cuddly… then his hot milk… then his medicine. But nothing seems to settle him.

Each night four schools will perform four different Shakespeare plays. Come and party with Shakespeare and celebrate the achievements of your local schools in a wonderful evening of entertainment. Running Time: 2 hours 30 mins inc. interval Ages: All Tickets: £8.50, Concs £6.50

What is really troubling the Thing, and will anyone ever get any sleep? Among the most inventive and influential bands in the history of popular music, 10cc are one of the very few acts to have achieved commercial, critical and creative success in equal measure, with their current live incarnation still able to sell-out major concert halls.

Exciting original music, physical storytelling and lots of comedy combine to create a fantastic adventure for children aged 3+ and their grown-ups!

Founding member Graham Gouldman, who leads the current line-up, puts 10cc’s longevity down to the quality and individuality of the songs. With eleven Top 10 hits, including three No 1s, it’s no surprise the band has sold 15 million albums in the UK alone.

The Addams Family* The Addams Family features an original story, and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family, a man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother.

Sean Hughes is back on tour following a critically acclaimed and audience packed run of his new show ‘Penguins’ at The Edinburgh Fringe, where Sean was awarded the Herald Angel Award for Best Comedy show. This is a show so full of surprises, and hidden twists and recurring themes that you find yourself mapping it out hours later. Sean takes us back to his Dublin upbringing and the, at times, utter awkwardness of teenage life and weaving in his family, his school days and the business of friendship and tying it all in to the present. It’s brilliant and multi-layered –and it really is up there with his Perrier award winning show A One Night Stand.

Why does society tell us how to behave and react? What does it have to do with Penguins? Buy a ticket and all will be revealed. Viva la Drag! – Guys Just Wanna Have Fun

A brand new play by Mike Kenny The music of the Bay City Rollers became the soundtrack for a generation of teenagers growing up in the mid 70’s. The face and voice of that soundtrack belonged to Les McKeown. With Les leading the way, massive hits such as ‘Bye Bye Baby’, ‘Shang A Lang’, ‘Summer Love Sensation’ and ‘Give A Little Love’ propelled the band to world-wide superstardom and their trademark Scottish tartan was to be seen everywhere across the planet. Join Les McKeown and his 4 piece band for a celebration of those hectic days and the behind the scenes pandemonium that followed. From the award-winning team behind The Terrible Infants, Ernest and the Pale Moon and The Vaudevillains, comes a new play inspired by the true story of a miner who became entombed in a tunnel during World War One. As the horror threatens to engulf him, he finds that not everything in the darkness is what it seems as he starts to discover a new, strange world beneath the mud and death. Setting off on an epic journey of salvation, the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur as he questions what’s real, what’s not and whether it even matters?

The Trench blends Les Enfants Terribles acclaimed brand of physical storytelling, verse, puppetry and live music from acclaimed artist Alexander Wolfe. Caliban and Ariel are left alone on the enchanted island, watching Prospero’s ship sail over the horizon and out of view. Using the magic of the words Prospero taught them, his former servants, the “savage” and the “airy spirit” are free to begin again. They sing and perform wild tempests. As the storms rage endlessly around them they conjure-up their own brave new world, with new rules for a new society - where spirits and monsters are people and inanimate things are alive.

Part theatre, part gig, This Last Tempest draws on Uninvited Guests’ collaborative approach to devised theatre. Working with composer and musician Neil Johnson, they fill this strange yet familiar island with guitar noise, evocative sounds and sweet airs. Funded by Arts Council England. Commissioned by Battersea Arts Centre and Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal. Developed at The Other Place at the RSC, and with support from Tobacco Factory Theatres.

He’s still rude, he’s still crude and this time he’s turning headlines into punch lines as his rip-roaring brand of banter continues to burst bellies across the country. Chubby doesn’t hold back from sharing his outlandish views on news, women and gender, sailing so close to the mark, even the most seasoned of fans will be left gob-smacked!

As politically incorrect as ever ‘The World’s Most Outrageous Comedian’ is far too rude for TV, so this live performance is the only place to catch the flamboyant comedian!

Mischievous Theatre was conceived over thirty years ago but was born here at the Theatre Royal, Margate in 2010 with a scratch event that showed, for the first time, a work in progress version of “The Con-Man”. The company was formed to create stimulating theatre and to encourage a greater involvement in the arts by the people of East Kent, particularly Thanet, and to tour work both nationally and internationally. Now based in Ramsgate, led by Clive Holland and aided by a lot of innovative theatrical, musical and arty chums, the

Third Party has been producing touring theatre for twenty years in the UK and abroad, playing theatres, village halls, festivals and found spaces. The bulk of their recent work has been in collaboration with director John Wright and has featured strongly visual and physically expressive versions of classic plays. In 2009 they premiered their two language, two country co-production of “The False Servant” by Marivaux

at the Theatre Royal Margate. In 2012, Third Party adapted the children’s classic The Sagas of Noggin the Nog for the stage, directed by John Wright. Following previews here at the Theatre Royal, the show went to the Edinburgh Festival in August 2014 to rave reviews, including 4 stars from the Independent and The Stage. A national tour is hotly anticipated. Third Party and Mischievous Theatre are currently collaborating on a new and exciting project in search of new audiences for theatre…watch this space! www.thirdparty.org.uk

StevensonThompson is a Kent based performance company with three inter-related strands of work: • Participatory (workshops with a wide variety of people) • Performance (especially with in house company, Moving Memory) • Research (into the impact of performance on health and well -being, especially of older people) A series of StevensonThompson projects resulted 4 years ago in the formation of Moving Memory Company - a group of women aged between 52-82 who combine theatre, dance and martial arts to arrest and delight their audiences. The work of Moving Memory explores the impact of movement on the health and well-being of older people. Moving Memory will present their latest piece “Cracking the Crinoline” as part of the Roundabout Festival in Margate Winter Gardens this September. StevensonThompson was short-listed for a Canterbury Culture Award in 2014. www.stevensonthompson.com

All of our fabulous venues are available for private hire.

This group meets every Tuesday (5.00-6.50pm) during term time, and all are encouraged to break down the usual barriers of communication by learning some sign-language; working in diverse peer groups; and the biggest skill of all – to not only learn lines, physicality and cues but most importantly to support each other on and off stage so that no-one is ever left out.

The 466 seat Theatre Royal with its classical stalls, circle and balcony layout, make it the perfect venue for large meetings, conferences and presentations, as well as school showcases, award ceremonies and full scale theatrical productions. The Winter Gardens offers a variety of function rooms to cater for everything from small dinner parties and family celebrations to full banqueting and large conferences and exhibitions. The Main Hall accommodates up to 1400 (seated), 2150 (standing)and the smaller Queens Hall is perfect for seminars, cabaret style shows and intimate dinner dances,

We believe the only label for our group is ‘Multiabled’ We all have skills and potential, and together we can all realize our dreams - and as the name suggest EVERYONE! Led by Zoe and Peter Hammond alongside a large team of volunteers, all sessions are BSL signed. Members work towards a professionally supported show performed in the Theatre, the latest being A Grimm Affair this July. Term time only: £2.00 per session (voluntary subs), limited places. For more information about the group please email: Inspiration-inc@hotmail.co.uk or call 07792 684227 or 07792 684240. Further information on the Theatre Royal website.

when it can accommodate 350 people comfortably. And if you want to bring a little theatre to your special day – why not have your ceremony on stage? The Theatre Royal is licensed for Marriage Ceremonies and will make a unique and dramatic setting for your big day. We have everything you need to make your event run as smoothly as all of ours. From highly experienced technical teams and friendly Box Office staff to an expert catering team capable of providing everything from tea and biscuits through to canapés or fine dining.

Martin Gibbons, a professional actor, writer and director (who runs and leads the Theatre Royal Youth Theatre) says “As a practitioner I am interested in using theatre spaces as dream spaces. I don’t buy the realism and push for naturalism in theatre; the stage should go beyond the day to day, creating worlds that can only exist in the imagination. This totally influences my work”.
