CELEBRATING THE BE

As we celebrate Craft and Design Month in May, we take a look at the wealth sam@yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

M

@ylcrowd

ENTION ‘craft and design’ to many people, particularly in relation to rural communities such as West Wales, and a certain image comes to mind – of older women crocheting, knitting or sewing. This image is at odds with the vibrancy of craft and design that exists in Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire – from the home crafters and hobbyists, to talented designer-makers having a national impact. Welsh Talent No one can deny the richness and breadth of design talent in West Wales. Not long ago, we wrote about Clare Johns Label (formerly Mrs J Pembrokeshire, www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk/ from-farm-to-hanger. Since our article back in 2016, this talented seamstress has further proved her mettle showing her latest collection at London Fashion Week 2017, and being selected to work with Gok Wan at his Fashion Club Brunch in Cardiff, www.gokfashion.com From her workshop near Narberth, Pembrokeshire, Gaynor Howell wears two hats – as designer and maker of bespoke leather handbags, and tutor of leatherwork skills through Leather Courses Britain. heritage skills that will otherwise be lost. She is running an open day at her workshop near Narberth on 20th May to encourage people to come along and find out more about what she does, and how they can learn more about leather working, and develop their own design talent. “I’m keen to encourage people to search their own creativity. Our courses are designed so that people are involved in the process from the start, designing, developing and making. The result is an individual piece for each person” Asking Gaynor what makes West Wales such a hive of design talent, she considers “Here, we seem to have the time; everything is slower. And the slow pace of life gives us room to design, to think, to make.” West Wales is home to several talented sculptors, such as nationally acclaimed Gideon Petersen of Creative Spiral and Aberporth based Paul Clarke, www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk/a-sense-of-life-withinsculpture, whose work can be found throughout the area and further afield. West Wales is also home to talents such as award-winning furniture designer Ben Cramp who runs Jam Furniture, www.jamfurniture.co.uk, from Cardigan, whose industrial influenced design can be found in Borough Market and

EST OF DESIGN IN WEST WALES

h of talent in West Wales, and opportunities for us to broaden our own skills the new Etsy headquarters. A vibrant design landscape indeed. Crafting too is alive and thriving in West Wales. Of course, West Wales is also home to a wealth of more traditional ‘crafters’, and this is also, rightly, celebrated in the area. Make it in Wales is a relatively new business based on the Carmarthenshire/Ceredigion border, curates a range of high end craft courses throughout West Wales, and encourages people to indulge their creative side. Courses cover pit firing, paper cutting, shibori dyeing, upholstery, sculpture and dressmaking, and are held in venues throughout Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. Not only is West Wales the perfect place to explore and develop skills, but there’s a thriving market for wellmade craft pieces as collectives such as Crafters Cwtch in Cardigan demonstrate. The boom in internet selling with platforms such as Etsy also make it easy for people to sell their creations to an ever-widening audience – not just to a local audience. Supporting local designer-makers, during Craft and Design Month – and beyond Craft and Design Month brings

together a wide variety of craft and design events under one banner. The ‘umbrella event’ aims to raise awareness of fine British craft and design, and to encourage people to support their local artists and makers. This article only dips a toe into craft and design in West Wales – and the more we support local designer makers, not only do we support our local economy, we’ll contribute to the diversity and interest in our communities. It’s something Your Local Crowd is keen to support – practically in the form of marketing services as well as shouting about local design stories. VIC NORTH CAFÉ DELI Delicious, honest food in a bright & welcoming space Stepping in somewhere on the heels of a much loved business and making it your own is always a challenge. Not all succeed, while others take up the baton and run with such confidence and enthusiasm that it’s hard to imagine it was any other way. Local baker Vicky North has clearly relished the opportunity to take over the Newport premises in 2016, previously occupied by the highly thought of LouLou’s – and in a short space of time has created a new ‘must visit’ destination on the West Wales foodie map: Vic North Café Deli Classes. I’ve eaten there twice since the café opened, enjoying the bright, welcoming space that Vicky and her team have created. The addition of a large mirror on the back wall adds to the feeling of space, and the door open to the kitchen gives visitors a sense of being part of place – and a sense that there’s nothing to hide. Openness and honesty is very obvious in the plates of utterly delicious food that come from the kitchen. There’s a simple menu of hot daily specials dishes cost £7-£9 – think nourishing hotpots such as beef stew with parmesan dumplings, soups, quiche of the day such as Colton Basset, spinach & sunblush tomato . Crusty sourdough baguettes stuffed with tasty fillings (£6) offer excellent value for money. Ingredients are sourced locally and sustainably wherever possible, for the seasonal menu. On a grey day just before Christmas, I warmed myself up with steaming French onion soup accompanied by a generous chunk of cheese on toast – Vic North style: delicious sourdough, nutty gruyere. Unable

10 | www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

to resist, I enjoyed a luscious slice of carrot cake washed down with a Coaltown coffee cappuccino. On my second visit, a bacon, leaves and tomato baguette (£6) was the perfect plateful, accompanied with a generous helping of crunchy, super-tasty winter slaw, dressed with homemade mayonnaise, and rocket. I resisted the cakes, but my lunch companions enjoyed the coffee walnut cake and the scones with jam & cream. The café caters well for those who live with food allergies, with plenty of free from options & a flexible attitude. One of my companions enjoyed a delicious chicken, spinach & pesto lasagne: satisfying and moist without the addition of cheese. The deli currently comprises a well-stocked cheese counter featuring local favourites Hafod and Perl las as well as popular French and Italian cheeses, and a selection of gourmet ingredients, displayed on the shelving at the back of the café. The dish of the day is available to takeaway as are the popular harissa and rocket pestos. Well worth a visit – and repeat visits, I’ll definitely be going back to sample the ever changing menu of specials. I haven’t tried the breakfasts yet, either, and will be looking forward to seeing what Spring and Summer bring to the seasonal menu. TOP COFFEE SHOPS Your Local Crowd is often travelling through the three counties & being a lover of coffee sam@yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

THE twenty-first century saw the rise of mobile phones, social media, wide-screen and high definition televisions and an extensive and unavoidable expansion of the internet. One of the more cliché aspects to modern life however, is the commercial rise of the coffee shop. Millions of people walk in and out of the doors of them every year. We have become accustomed the phrase “shall we meet over coffee?” Town and city centres are full with chain coffee shops like Café Nero, Starbucks and Costa announcing huge profit margins. They may be successful in persuading you to spend your hard-earned money with them, it doesn’t mean that they provide you with the best coffee. Smaller, local and independent coffee shops take special care in their choice of product and customer service. Their regular customers are incredibly valuable to them as a business. The smaller establishments also try their best to “go the extra mile” ahead of the bigger chain shops, to win their customers over. We’ve compiled a list of our eleven favourite coffee shops in Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire that we recommend because they serve great tea, coffee and food complete with

However we rate it highly as not only is it great value but they also cater for all kinds of dietary preferences and needs. Pancake breakfasts, vegetarian breakfasts and lunches. Sophie’s offer an extensive menu that you must try for yourself. The coffee is always fresh, not a stale bean in sight. It’s not over the top and extravagant and just provides great food with friendly service. O

VER the past decade Cardigan has seemingly been re-vamped, re-styled and had an invigorating injection of character. There is a good buzz in the town, with new shops opening, current shops expanding and businesses are really having to compete with each other to earn the desire of both the visitor and the locals of this town at the mouth of the river Teifi. An array of quirky, sophisticated and satisfying eateries have popped up around the town. On a nice summers day you’d probably go with your family or a bunch of mates to the Pizza Tipi, down by Cambrian Quay for a freshly oven-baked pizza and a few bottles of cider whilst soaking up the sun. At night you could treat yourself to an evening meal at Cardigan Brasserie. Maybe at the end of a night out on the town you’d even find yourself in a kebab shop down on Finch Square! However on a day like today, during late autumn or early winter, we were looking for somewhere warm and cosy, offering a decent spot of lunch without having to pay an arm and a leg and headed to Food For Thought Café on the Pendre! Food For Thought is a great little café located on the main street in Cardigan open from 9 until 5 serving breakfast and lunch. It tends to get quite busy during lunchtimes, especially during school holidays due to it being a pretty popular establishment. Its interior is clean, bright and welcoming, with a lively atmosphere. Quite literally welcoming too, with its big “Croeso! Welcome!” painted sign being the first thing you see as you walk in! The walls are white and blue and add to the bright and casual atmosphere that the café gives to fit in with this oceanic and fluvial part of Wales. The smell of the freshly prepared food coming

16 | www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

from the kitchen, the aroma of coffee from the grinder and the selection of mouth watering cakes on offer, are all very welcoming on entering the establishment. You can get yourself a delicious large cooked breakfast with a cup of tea or coffee for as little as £5.75. Great value! There is quite a bit of variety on the lunch menu, with everything you’d expect. Sandwiches, baguettes and paninis, also catering for those who require gluten free, wheat free or celiac food. You can quite often find specials on the menu. Panini specials, fish specials, pancake specials on Shrove Tuesday and even Mexican specials sometimes. Those who are really in need of a substantial munch can go for one of the gourmet burgers guaranteed to fill you up for the day! I have eaten here many times and can really say that it just does not disappoint. Catering for all tastes, if you just fancy a cup of tea and a slice of delicious homemade cake then Food For Thought most certainly is the place to go. You can catch up with your friends or dive into a book or magazine, then kick back and relax in one of the coffee lounge’s comfy sofas. For tea lovers, Food For Thought sells a wide variety of Tea Pigs flavoured teas and always has a selection of homemade cakes on the go. Cappuccino mallow fluff, chocolate orange, Ferrero Rocher cheesecake and raspberry and cream sponge are just some of the homemade cakes that have been sold here. If you’ve not yet experienced the delights of Food For Thought, don’t just take our word for it, go and try it yourself, we are sure you won’t be disappointed! 01239 621863 Food For Thought, 13 Pendre, Cardigan, SA43 1JL

PURPLE SPROUTING BROCCOLI Available from March – May from fruit and vegetable growers or your garden, this versatile vegetable is a great vehicle for soaking up a good dressing, or just with some good salty butter melted on it. 2 tsp toasted white or black sesame seeds 1 very finely chopped fresh red chilli Mix all the dressing ingredients together. Steam or cook the sprouting broccoli until just tender, drain and toss in the ingredients whilst still warm, serve straight away or cool. You can omit the chilli if you don’t want that heat, and add a handful of chopped fresh coriander/squeeze of lime for something different.

SPROUTING BROCCOLI AND FETA TART I love to make tarts all year round, they are a fabulous way of celebrating what is in season and some of the delicious local cheeses we have here in Pembrokeshire. Pastry 280gr plain flour 120gr unsalted butter pinch salt Cold water Filling 300ml double cream 2 large whole eggs 2 large egg yolks S&P Handful steamed and well drained purple sprouting broccoli, sliced into long, thin pieces 150gr crumbled feta cheese (Cothi Valley Goats make local feta, called Veta, from their goats milk – you’ll find them at St Dogmaels Local Producers market) Rub flour and butter together until you have a fine crumb, add salt and enough water to bind the crumbs, roll into a tight ball, cover and leave for 1 hour in fridge. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Flour a large chopping board and roll out pastry to ½ cm thick to fit a 23cm flan tin (preferably with

a removable base) and place in tin. Prick base with a fork, line with non-stick baking parchment and fill with baking beans. Cook in oven for 20 minutes, until slightly browning, take off baking parchment carefully (retaining beans) and pop uncovered pastry back in oven for 4 minutes. This process seals the pastry and stops it going soggy when you add the wet ingredients. Allow to cool. Mix cream, all eggs, S&P together. Place pastry in tin on another baking sheet, IF the pastry leaks this will stop a big mess in your oven. Arrange broccoli and feta evenly in bottom of baked pastry case, pour cream mixture over and place back in the oven for roughly 20 minutes, turning half way through, until filling starts to brown and is set. Serve warm, or cold, with salads or as part of

a picnic. Use this recipe but change the fillings, I love slow roast tomatoes & smoked Caerphilly, wild garlic and soft goats cheese, chargilled courgette with Perl Las. SESAME BROCCOLI SALAD One of my favourites, the sprouting broccoli really shines in this salad, you can substitute it for regular broccoli, French beans or mange tout at other times of year. 400g or a good handful of sprouting broccoli Dressing: 2 tbsp sesame oil 2 tbsp light soy sauce

WHY WE LOVE WOOL Wool has been used for hundreds of years to make all sorts of invaluable products such as clothing, upholstery and building materials. The benefits of using wool are vast. It insulates, it’s bio-degradable, antibacterial, sustainable AND it keeps you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot, by Florence Jackson, Celtic Sustainables

PENGUINS IN WOOLLY JUMPERS The insulating benefits of wool were put to the test when an oil spill off the Coast of Phillip Island threatened the lives of its inhabitants - the world’s smallest species of penguin (also known as fairy penguins!). When the catastrophic oil spill swept along the shore, their waterproof insulating feathers became clogged with oil, preventing them from staying warm. Researchers decided to harness the insulating properties of wool by creating a knitting pattern and sending it out to the locals along with a plea to save the penguins! Before long floods of woolly jumpers came from all over the world which could then protect the birds until their feathers regained their natural condition. The wool acted as a natural insulator and was able to regulate their temperature even when wet! WARMTH AND BEDDING Conventional duvets that are often made from down, feather or polyester are all insulators and make the body hot, which

18 | www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

@CelticSus

is great when you first get into bed, but unlike wool bedding, do not release the heat as our temperature drops during deep sleep. When we slip into a deep sleep, our body temperature drops, and when conventional bedding traps heat, it causes us to wake up tossing and turning throughout the night. BAAVET BEDDING Baavet produce wool bedding in Wales using 100% British wool. Their products are breathable and hypo-allergenic and are ideal for people who get warm in the night or those who suffer from allergies and asthma. The insulating properties of the sheep wool help to regulate your body’s temperature which allows

for a more restful night’s sleep. They celebrate the talents of British people whose experience of wool goes back for generations and they are careful to source their wool from British farmers who they know personally. To make the bedding, they use the finest quality cambric cottons which are especially made by one of the oldest trading cotton merchants in Manchester. There are no harmful chemicals used and the wool isn’t bleached as it would destroy the important scales on the wool fibres. To finish, the Baavet’s are individually handcrafted under the ancient walls of Harlech Castle, to create a truly British product! If you would like to find out more about the Baavet’s we stock, please give us a call, email or check out our website at www.celticsustainables.co.uk

CLEANING WITH A CONSCIENCE There are few rites of spring more satisfying that the annual spring clean, it’s time to throw open the doors and windows, dust away the cobwebs and get down to a good spring clean

A

LL to often the chemicals found in conventional cleaning products are harsh and can be more dangerous than the dirt you are trying to clean away. Here we list the natural alternatives, to help leave your home smelling fresh and squeaky clean. Your basic supplies, which can be found in most supermarkets: • Distilled white vinegar • Baking soda • Olive Oil • Borax (sold with the washing powders) • Microfiber cloths • Newspaper Other supplies found in Health food stores • Liquid Castile soap • Essential Oils BAKING SODA (Bicarbonate of Soda) Suprisingly good at breaking down grease. Use with vinegar or lemon juice to make a more abrasive product. Not only a good water softener, but a great deodorizer for stinky fridges and dishwashers. Stains: Sprinkle dry on carpets to help lift out stubburn stains. Or use on a damp sponge to smear on stains on work surfaces. Test in a small area first. Grease & grime: Mix with a little water to obliterate grease and grime. Smells: It will neutralize most strong odours and when sprinkled onto carpets

@ylcrowd

before vacuuming and will freshen them from pet smells. Unblock drains: Drop some down the plughole then pour over vinegar to unblock a drain. LEMON JUICE Scum: Mix with vinegar to make a paste to remove those stubborn stains, its also a good bleaching agent. Furniture Polish: Mix one cup of olive oil with half a cup of lemon juice and pour into a spray bottle. The lemon will cut through the grease and the olive oil will leave a nice shine, remember to buff with a dry cloth though. Test in a small area first. Deodoriser: Good for removing smells and odours, from your microwave for example. Simply add a few slices of lemon into a bowl of water and microwave on high power for a couple of minutes. ESSENTAIL OILS Fed up of the taste of modern air fresheners or of dodging that squirt that seems to be aimed at you as you enter the room, leaving you the onset of a migraine, use essential oils instead. Lavender to relax perhaps use in the bedroom, peppermint may help you stay alert, a good one for the car and clove and citrus fruit for the rest of the house. Air freshener: Place a few drop onto a cot-

ton ball and leave hidden in the corner of the room, out of children’s reach of course. Antibacterial Spray: Using a couple of drops of lavender, a couple of drops of tea tree and some eucalyptus oil in the winter or citronella in the summer, to deter flies. OLIVE OIL & VINEGAR Olive oil is particularly good at removing finger marks from stainless steel surfaces Vinegar is an excellent all-purpose cleaner and deodoriser, particularly white wine vinegar • Bathroom and kitchen, use 50/50 mixed with water in a squirty bottle. • Use as a de-scaler, soak cloths in vinegar and wrap them around taps, cover with a plastic bag and secure with an elastic band and return a few hours later to find gleaming taps. • I’m sure our nanas all told us about this one, clean your windows with vinegar and newspaper for brilliant results •Remove mold and mildew, by wiping with neat vinegar. Have a look at investing in a steam cleaner, reducing the need for any cleaning products and chemicals, with the heat of the steam killing bacteria. Designed to be used in most household areas such as the bathroom, floors and ovens etc. www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk | 19

LOSE THE FOUNDATION Rich creamy foundations are great for the winter, but now spring has arrived, lighten the load on your face and instead invest in a good CC Cream for the more natural look.

USE A GOOD SERUM Again, during the colder winter months our skin needs a rich and nourishing moisturizer, but during the warmer months, our skin can become oily. A great way to combat this, along with the blackheads and spots is to hydrate the skin with a lighter serum instead. Quickly absorbed, leaving your skin with a soft glow.

USE A GOOD PRIMER Essential for the warmer months to help your makeup last longer. EXFOLIATE Get rid of that dull dry winter skin with a good exfoliante. Be careful not to over exfoliate, you really only need to do this a couple of times a week to keep your skin gorgeous and glowing.

BLOTTING SHEETS These little beauties make all the difference between dewy skin and greasy skin. A quick blot half way through the day rescues many faces. USE A GOOD MAKEUP REMOVER Remove every trace of make-up before bed, not only does this save your sheets but also your skin.

WATERPROOF MAKE-UP With the weather warming up, well hopefully it will happen soon, none of us want to look sweaty and have our make-up slide off. Invest in some good waterproof makeup. For me waterproof mascara is a must.

WHAT THEY SAY: Whether you are looking for an indulgent, relaxing spa break or spa day; an excuse to escape in a tranquil ambience for the day, The Cliff Hotel & Spa will meet your every need and surpass all your expectations. WHAT WE SAY: I’ve been a regular visitor to the Cliff Spa & Hotel for many years and have seen the hotel evolve in recent months and I’m thrilled to say they have really upped their game to bring not only the hotel but now also the spa, in line with other top spa’s that can be found in Wales. On arrival we are warmly greeted and invited to fill out the pre treatment forms. Robes & towels are provided and we are shown to the newly refurbished changing rooms. Large & spacious with all the facilities as you’d expect. Today, I’ve invited two girlfriends to give me their view on the “Mini Spa Day” The Cliff offer. We’ve all booked different treatments, but first we take the opportunity to relax in the beautiful spa, which features a salt water hydro spa, steam room, sauna, hot tub and gym. We skip the gym, today was all about rest, relaxation & catching up, & the setting proved perfect. Two hours soon drifted by as we made full use of all the facilities before being discreetly

I chose the Thalgo Discovery Mini Facial which included a Cleanse, Exfoliation, Mask, Tone and Moisturise, giving the skin a quick boost and taste of what you can expect from a full facial. My therapist was polite courteous and discreet. THE AFTER EFFECTS: On the day we visited, the spa was busy, yet the therapists moved between treatments, professionally and with no fuss. Not once, did I feel rushed as I have done in other establishments, making the whole experience very relaxing. On meeting up with my girlfriends following their treatments, much the same was reported, and we all left the spa feeling, relaxed and rejuvinated. We finished the experience with a delightful lunch in The Carreg restaurant, overlooking the sea and all got our diaries out to schedule our return. Police News

DYFED-POWYS POLICE LAUNCHES CCTV Dyfed-Powys Police, supported by Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn has begun the work to review and consider the plan for implementing new CCTV across the Force area.

Dyfed-Powys Police

24 | www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

Health Board, Natural Resources Wales, Fire Service and Dyfed-Powys Police have met to give consideration to what would be the most effective CCTV infrastructure, based on the information held by all agencies. T/Assistant Chief Constable Pam Kelly said: “We are working together as a team, considering where the highest risk and demand is within the County and we will follow this same approach of talking and sharing information together as we roll this model out across the counties. “CCTV cameras are of a much better quality compared to those that were utilised many years ago, therefore, there is a strong likelihood that there will be a reduction in the number of cameras utilised, without compromising on the level of coverage we can achieve. “The cameras will be placed in areas where our communities encounter the most problems and will help in making sure that vulnerable people and our wider community are kept safe.” Read more fromDyfed - Powys Police at www. yourlocalcrowd.co.uk/articles

Image courtesy of khunaspix at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

This work is beginning in Carmarthenshire, with a model soon to follow across the four counties we serve. Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn, pictured, said: “I am delighted that one of my key priorities for delivery is underway and I look forward to the force-wide review of CCTV across all counties being progressed. “I do not intend to simply switch the old cameras back on, but instead look to see which areas will most benefit from CCTV. Communities and their focal points have changed since old infrastructures were put in place – we need to ensure that the cameras are in the places they should be in, according to today’s needs. “We will roll this out gradually across the counties and ensure we make the most of our learning as we go - key partners working together to get this right now, will keep people safe for years to come.” Representatives from Carmarthenshire County Council, Carmarthen and Ammanford Town Councils, Hywel Dda

WHAT TO DO IN A DENTAL EMERGENCY You probably know what to do in a medical emergency – you may even be first aid trained but a dental emergency? You may not even be sure what a ‘dental emergency’ is, so we’re hoping to answer all these question in this column.

Pembrokeshire Dental Centre

What is a ‘dental emergency’? We’re talking about something that needs immediate attention, regardless of what time of day or night it is. You should seek emergency dental treatment • If you’ve knocked your tooth out completely • If you’ve knocked your tooth so it’s been displaced (although it might still be attached by some tissues) • If you are in severe pain following an impact to your mouth even if your teeth are still in place • If you have broken your tooth and it has left sharp edges causing further damage to your mouth area • If you are suffering from an infection which is making you seriously unwell or causing swelling which is obstructing an airway What should I do in a dental emergency If the damage to your teeth is not the only injury you have suffered, you may well need to go straight to A&E – if head injuries, damage to your back or neck, a broken limb or excessive bleeding is involved, the dental treatment is probably secondary to the other medical issues. If the emergency occurs during ‘surgery hours’ try and speak to your dentist. They will be able to advise you whether they can treat you appropriately, or if not, where you should go. Out of hours – over night or at weekends,

@PembsDental

your dental surgery should have left emergency details on the answer machine message. Otherwise, you can seek emergency advice from NHS 111. What isn’t a dental emergency? It can sometimes be hard to distinguish between something that needs attention as a priority, but isn’t an emergency. Although you will need to make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible, the following are unlikely to be classed as a ‘dental emergency’ needing immediate treatment. • A toothache (as opposed to severe pain). This may well be a sign of an underlying problem, but can be dealt with through a regular appointment. • Signs of infection. You will need to see a dentist as soon as you can, but not necessarily as an ‘emergency’. You will be prescribed antibiotics if appropriate and given a plan for any future treatment that might be needed. • Lost crown or a filling. You may need a temporary repair if a nerve has been exposed causing pain. • Breaking a set of braces is not normally a dental emergency, unless it is causing damage to your mouth. While not ‘dental emergencies’ you should still speak to your dentist as a priority in order to make an appointment and deal with the problem you are experiencing.
