TAKE #PAULSPLEDGE TODAY
Take #PaulsPledge to show your commitment to never condone or commit violence or aggression. Paul Pugh, now aged 34, was left in a coma for two months following the unprovoked assault outside the Old Cross Inn, Ammanford, on January 6, 2007, for which four men were jailed. Despite the fact that he will never fully recover from injuries that left him having to learn how to walk and talk again, Paul is bravely using his experience to campaign against alcohol-fuelled violence. As part of the campaign, Paul has filmed a 15minute documentary, which starts with the 999 call made to emergency services after the attack. The film is being shown to young people throughout Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire to highlight the consequences of violence. Paul Pugh said: “I don’t want to see anyone in the world go through what we are going through. My family, my friends, Cwmamman Utd, my therapists, Headway and the community have all been affected by the horrific unprovoked attack in my home town of Ammanford on Saturday, 6th of January, 2007, which left me within an inch of losing my life for no reason. This campaign is my way of doing something positive after what has hap-
pened. I hope my story and seeing the effect of violence on me will stop it from happening again.” Dyfed Powys Police and carmarthenshire Community safety partnership are supporting Paul in his efforts. Acting Inspector Teresa Ross, Campaign Founder, said: “Paul’s story is harrowing and really demonstrates the devastating consequences of alcohol fuelled violence. #PaulsPledge is also about encouraging people to drink less alcohol on a night out as we know alcohol can have a massive impact on a person’s behaviour.” Cllr Pam Palmer, Chair of the Carmarthenshire CSP, said: “Paul’s message is simple – walk away, think twice. No-one should go through what Paul and his family have endured. We should all take this opportunity to make the pledge never to condone violence and aggression.” Take Paul’s Pledge – sign up to show your support to his campaign and vow to never condone violent behaviour, to walk away from aggression and violence and encourage friends and family to do the same. Tweet using #PaulsPledge and help spread the message.

INTERVIEW
...WITH JEWELLERY DESIGNER KERYL APPLESEED I’VE always been quite creative, I grew up in a photography studio & assisted on photo shoots from the age of 10, but for some reason, despite my love for a camera, my parents discouraged me from following in their footsteps and pushed me in a different direction. FOR years I worked in a job I hated, then a stroke when I was 30 pushed me in a different direction leaving me with visual & neurological problems. Born out of frustration and a need to create, and also at the time becoming a mature mother, I needed something to do that wasn’t baby related and something that I could use as therapy, an outlet for pent up emotion, something that I could do that incorporated my need to release stress and be creative, release my frustration, so I signed up for a night class City & Guilds in Jewellery Manufacturing and Silversmithing. I have to take my time making pieces due to my condition but I love it, I love creating things for others. My jewellery is what you would call artist or studio jewellery, I don’t make bling, I use nature & emotions as inspiration for a piece & I only make one unique piece, I don’t want to be a production line jewellery maker, I couldn’t do it anyway, I see my pieces as small, wearable, metal sculptures. I try not to look at other makers work as I don’t want to steal their ideas, it tends to happen, even if you don’t consciously do it you can end up subconsciously making similar pieces, so I tend not to look in the first place. I spend lots of time in museums & galleries staring at beautiful objects, studying techniques & styles, but not to copy, just for inspiration. When I first started I made flowers, lots of spirals (I love spirals, & even managed to incorporate one into my logo)

& hearts, but now my work has evolved into more abstract pieces. My pieces mostly just become what I am feeling on the day, they just appear from the metal, they can be an emotion or a memory of something I’ve seen in nature like the reflection of the clouds on the water at Poppit beach, which was the inspiration for the Winter Sea collection, or the surface of the River Teifi, which was the inspiration for the Surface collection. I tend to sketch the idea up quickly then just get a hammer out & go from there. I love my hammers. I use recycled & reclaimed copper & sterling silver and because of the tactile nature of the pieces & my own ideals. I don’t use nasty chemicals or electric tools (I’m scared of power tools), I use just hand tools & hand polish & fire finish. They take time, I make when I’m able. I loved making commissioned wedding rings for a couAbove: Wedding rings; ple last year. It’s a great feeling when people love & understand my work as all my pieces all have a story, a unique moment captured in metal. I was born in South Wales but left in 2001 to go to university in London, I didn’t return to Wales until 2012, via Devon. Coming to West Wales has been the best thing for me, it has the best coastline & countryside, who wouldn’t be inspired to create here, lovely friendly people & the speed of life that allows me to create my unique pieces of Appleseed Jewellery in my own time. • Take care of the Coast Path – it’s rugged, natural terrain • Always keep to the Path, and stay away from cliff edges and overhangs. • Supervise children at all times, especially near cliff edges • Be aware of the walking surface, they can vary considerably with the weather. Always wear strong footwear with good grip and firm ankle support • Ensure you wear or carry warm and waterproof clothing • Beware of cliff top walking in high winds. This can be dangerous. • When taking short-cuts across beaches – beware you may be cut off by the tide. • Take care not to sit under cliffs or climb them, as they can be prone to rock falls • Keep dogs under close control or on the lead. • The Coast Path is managed for walkers; in most cases it is not safe or lawful to ride horses or cycle on the Coast Path • Carry a mobile phone and in an emergency dial 999. REFLEXOLOGY
Sam Jones
Reflex Energy
with Pauline Wilkins, reviewed by Sam Jones
Cost: £25. Approx 1hr They Say: The benefits of Reflexology can be many and varied from a feeling of total relaxation and release of stress to help with more physical ailments such as tight muscles, circulatory problems, digestive disorders, PMT, menopause respiratory problems – the list is endless. We Say: With the stresses of daily life taking its toll, I was keen to try a more holistic approach to my health & well being. A little sceptical of the benefits of reflexology, (I now know to be due to my lack of knowledge) and with extremely ticklish feet, I visited Pauline with some trepidation, ready for both an education and a new experience. After a few medical questions about my general health, Pauline explained a little about the Morrell reflexology, what to expect and possibly experience. I was told that people react in a number of different ways to the treatment. Lying back in a reclined chair with cushions strategically and expertly placed under my arms, knees and ankles the treatment began. Pauline guiding me through a relaxation technique, with my eyes closed, using rhythmic breathing and the mind, to focus on my limbs from head to foot. To the sound of gentle music, I’m talked into a deep relaxed state. Oils were applied to my feet and Paulines hands glided smoothly
over each foot, without, I’m relieved to say, giving any ticklish sensations. Gently and with no heavy pressure, my feet were carefully worked, toes, the instep, the ball of my foot and the heel. Listening to my breathing and the soft music, I could fill my mind with nothing and it was incredibly relaxing. I find it hard to put into words just what I experienced during the treatment, but I did see colour, purple and yellow, whilst my toes were being worked and experienced tingling sensations over my arms whilst my heel was being touched. Results: The treatment left me feeling completely relaxed and at peace with both myself and the chaotic world, in which I live. I was amazed at how well I felt. Oddly, both energized and calm, ready to tackle the stress and speed of my daily life, unphased and head on. These feelings stayed with me for several days. If you are looking for a wonderfully calm and relaxing experience, I can strongly recommend you place your feet into the experienced hands of Pauline for some reflexology. For a full interview with Pauline and a little more information about Morrell reflexology, go to www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk To book, call Pauline on 01239 811712

PICKING PAINT FOR A TRADITIONAL HOME Picking the colour to paint your house can be a very difficult decision. As is the case with many things, a close look can be all it takes to get the answer you’re looking for.
Old houses are often spotted with remnants of the lime wash colours they once were covered with. These spots are usually dismissed as some form of discolouration and simply painted over. However, they can hold the keys to the colours that were traditionally used in the area the house was built in. Take a look at the walls and any old remaining doors or window frames for clues as to the colours they used to be. If your own field research doesn’t turn anything up, then try turning to the census. Oddly enough, this can sometimes tell you exactly what you want to know. In the past, the census would at times hold records of the outer appearance of the homes it surveyed. Whilst it is sometimes difficult to determine exactly which house a census entry is referring to when it describes its appearance, the details it gives will provide you with a very good idea of what the homes in your area have generally looked like in the past. If you really can’t find any record – physical or otherwise – of your home’s aesthetic history, then the general rule is to stick to more natural hues. All sorts of colours are considered in keeping with an older property, so don’t be afraid to opt for a seemingly bold red or yellow if earthier tones lend it a more natural appearance. Lime wash is the traditional outer covering, and can be tinted with mineral pigments to all sorts of shades. Eco-friendly, breathable paints such as Earthborn Silicate Masonry Paint are available in various colours to sit harmoniously on old homes in both urban and rural settings, and Farrow & Ball is well-known for its range of heritage colours. All of these brands are stocked by Celtic Sustainables at Unit 9 Parc Teifi, Cardigan, SA43 1EW. Pop by or visit www.celticsustainables.co.uk. Alternatively, call 01239 623506. Mark Jones Clay Shaw Butler
UNDERSTANDING THE JULY BUDGET
The Chancellor has spoken – but did you really understand what the July Budget was all about? Here, Mark Jones of Clay Shaw Butler, breaks it down. AFTER the initial wave of publicity and comment, it’s always good to take a more measured approach to reacting to the changes. First of all, a second Budget within a calendar year is highly unusual. Chancellor George Osborne announced that he would hold a ‘Stability Budget’ on July 8 because, in his words, ‘I don’t want to wait to turn the promises we made in the Election into a reality’. The Second Budget has provided the Chancellor with an opportunity to introduce measures on tax, spending and borrowing that he might not have been able to enact while in Government with his old Lib-Dem Coalition partners at the time of the Spring Budget on March 18. Here are a few bullet points from the Budget: • Introduction of a new compulsory National Living Wage for working people aged 25 and over, starting in April 2016 at £7.20 an hour and reaching £9 an hour by 2020. • National Insurance employment allowance for small firms to be increased by 50 per cent to £3,000 from 2016. • Higher rate income tax threshold to rise from £42,385 to £43,000 from next year, lifting 130,000 people out of the higher rate. • Tax-free personal allowance for income tax to be raised from £10,600 to £11,000 next year. • Rates of income tax remain unchanged. • Corporation tax to be cut from 20 per cent to 19 per cent in 2017 and to 18 per cent by 2020. • Annual Investment Allowance for small and medium-sized businesses to be set at £200,000 from this year. • Dividend tax credit to be replaced with a new tax-free allowance of £5,000 on dividend income. Rates of dividend tax to be set at 7.5 per cent, 32.5 per cent and 38.1 per cent. • New inheritance tax allowance of £175,000 on homes left to children or grandchildren from 2017, allowing £1 million to be passed on tax-free. Reforms will ensure that those who downsize do not lose any of the allowance. • Pensions tax annual allowance for those earning in excess of £150,000 per annum to be tapered away to a minimum of £10,000 from next year. • Mortgage interest relief on residential property to be restricted to the basic rate of income tax, phased in over four years from April 2017.
20
FOR MORE ON FINANCE: www.bit.ly/ylcfinance1
• Tax relief for homeowners who rent out a room to be increased from £4,250 to £7,500 from next year. • HM Revenue and Customs to receive extra £750million to go after tax fraud and evasion, with the aim of raising £7.2billion in extra tax. • So, to summarise: some good news for a national living wage being set for over 25s. But, there’s a downside as small businesses will find this extra cost worrying. As some sort of compensation for this, there will be a 50% increase in small firms employment allowance. The news on personal allowances going up 3.8%, plus the slight increase in the basic rate band of 0.7% has something of a ‘Wow’ factor. For companies, the reduction in Corporation Tax and the Annual investment Allowance now being £200k (not £25k as promised for Jan 2016) has got to be good news. There are some key changes on welfare reform which need to be highlighted • A freezing of working-age benefits, including tax credits and Local Housing Allowance, for a period of four years from 2016/17 (excluding Maternity Allowance, maternity pay, paternity pay and sick pay) • A reduction in the household benefit cap to £20,000 (£23,000 in London) • Support through Child Tax Credit to be limited to two children, for those born from April 2017 • A new requirement for those aged 18 to 21 who are on Universal Credit to apply for an apprenticeship or traineeship, gain work-based skills, or go on a work placement six months after the start of their claim • A reduction in rents for social housing by 1% a year for four years, and a requirement for tenants on higher incomes (over £40,000 in London and over £30,000 outside London) to pay market rate, or near market rate, rents. • As always, the devil is in the detail with any Budget. We will, as per usual, do our level best to explain it all to our clients. www.clayshawbutler.com/news/latest-news-for-business www.clayshawbutler.com The team at Clay Shaw Butler can be contacted on 01267 228500. @clayshawbutler
