GET THE DRINKS IN! “Tis the season to be merry’, and that means selecting the right beverages to see you through the celebrations. Richie Hammond chooses his top tipples for your Christmas meals richie hammond
If you’re planning on cooking the traditional Turkey dinner at home, as I am this year, which wines should you consider? Deciding what to drink pre- and post-turkey can be critical to a successful meal. One thing I find with turkey is it can be a bit dry so the last thing you want to drink is a heavy tannin red (your mouth will be dry enough) so you could start with a refreshing aperitif like an Italian sparkling Chardonnay Ferghettina Milledi Brut at around the £25 price range is a lovely choice but others can work just as well. Next for the bird try a lovely white Burgundy Saint Veran (£15) or if you prefer red a fruity Beaujolais Villages (£9). For dessert how about a delicious South African half bottle of Rustenberg Straw Wine (£10) then finish the afternoon with either a Vidal White Label Series Rosé (£6) or a Grahams Port ( £10). If cranberry sauce is on the menu then

definitely give bone-dry reds a wide berth as the collision can be more uncomfortable than warring in-laws. How about a wonderful pink Champagne for Christmas evening? Lidl’s are currently offering a Bissinger & Co Champagne Rose for 14.95 which is has to be the best value for money offer of the season. This vibrant champagne will ease you into Christmas evening like a velvet glove picking you up and gently placing you in your favorite chair warm and relaxed. The bubble strength (always a good sign of quality) is like watching a hidden underwater volcano in the bottom of your glass bursting a stream of tiny bubbles to the top of your glass, which will dance around your mouth with a flavour you will love. Where ever you’re going, whatever you’re eating and drinking, I hope you and your family enjoy each others company and have a wonderful day. Cheers Richie

WINTER DRIVING Some practical advice for motorists driving in frosty and wintery conditions sam@yourlocalcrowd.co.uk
@ylcrowd
DRIVING IN ICY CONDITIONS Slow down, steer gently and avoid sudden sharp braking or acceleration Leave a bigger gap between you and the car in front If you skid, do not brake harshly, If you travel across black ice and the steering feels light, don’t brake, just ease off the accelerator
ENSURE YOUR VEHICLE IS PREPARED Antifreeze – check coolant level regularly and, if required, top-up with antifreeze. Battery – the most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold. Fuel – keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay. Lights – check and clean all lights regularly. Carry spare bulbs. Tyres – need at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Check pressures at least every fortnight. Windscreen – reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Screen wash – use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather. Locks and door seals – stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on door rubber seals. A squirt of water dispersant (WD-40) in locks will help stop them freezing.
WINTER EMERGENCY KIT – IT IS WORTH KEEPING IN YOUR VEHICLE Blanket, rug or sleeping bag Shovel, Torch and batteries, Tow rope Bits of carpet or thick cardboard to place under driven wheels to help regain traction on ice or snow Salt, sand or cat litter – to help clear snow and ice Reflective jacket(s) Ice scraper and de-icer Snow chains (if you live in a remote or rural area) Battery jump leads Bottled water Snacks – chocolate or cereal bars Extra screen wash
WHEN BAD WEATHER IS FORECAST Warm winter coat, scarf, hat, gloves and warm clothes Waterproofs Sturdy boots Flask of hot drink Read more at www. yourlocalcrowd.co.uk/guides Background image ©Simon Howden.FreeDigitalPhotos.net

7 TIPS FOR KEEPING ACTIVE THIS WINTER Leanne Bird discusses the benefits of staying active over the winter months. @Bird_Sol_
So, nights are drawing in, frost is biting and rain dampening our spirits – an excellent excuse not to be active and stay at home hibernating till spring, right? But…, if you think about it, the summer wasn’t great, autumn was wet and windy… so if you wait until the days are nice and nights are long and warm… you’re going to be active in about 7 out of 365 days! Therefore, I’ve put together 7 tips to kick yourself in the butt, stop making excuses and find a way that works for you to get on that journey to become the best you that you can be!
5. GO TO A FITNESS CLASS
1. ACCEPTANCE
7. HEAD ON A CIRCULAR WALK
There is nothing else for it – you’re just going to have to accept the weather is unpredictable and often cold and wet, so taking that out of the equation can help with your motivation to get active.
2. WORK OUT FROM HOME Ok, so you really can’t drum up the motivation to step your toe outside? Make space and get your fitness DVDs out. Make sure they’re the right level for you, especially if you haven’t been active for a while, a lot of the intense workouts may not be suitable for your joints or your heart/blood pressure.
3. JOIN A CLUB This can really help you to stay motivated. Running, football, kayaking, surfing, netball, you name it there will hopefully be a club for you.
4. GO BRIGHT Just because it’s dark doesn’t mean you can’t get outdoors – get your bright gear on and head out (where it’s safe) doing some fast walking or running. Sign up to a local 5k Santa Dash to give you a target and download the couch to 5k app.
Drag a friend or go on your own – there are lots of options, day or night, high or low intensity, yoga to kickboxing. Give it a go and try to commit by buying block sessions to give yourself more motivation to keep attending.
6. WEAR LAYERS AND KEEP HYDRATED Although it may be cold, you’ll soon warm up. Having several light layers will enable you to stay at the right temperature and put layers on when you stop. Even though it’s cold, stay hydrated – get that water down you! There is nothing like going on a nice winter walk and ending with a steaming hot mug of tea (or a cool pint if you prefer)! Grab a few mates, plan your route and get out there and breathe that fresh cool air. You’ll also find books with pre-designed routes for you for example the Best Pub Walks series. What are you waiting for? Get out there! As part of BirdSol’s HAWC (Health and Wellbeing in Communities) initiative I have just started a new Boxercise class in Cardigan Friday’s 12-1pm – why not give that a go (booking essential). I can also offer tailored consultations and programs (to be carried out at home or with a trainer) for individuals or small groups who want to get out of their fitness/lifestyle rutt and need some fitness/nutrition/ wellbeing guidance and support that is right for them. CRANBERRIES Cranberries, the guilt free super food of the festive season. As far as healthy food go, they top the list due to their high nutritional and antioxidant content. Here we list the many health benefits of cranberries, so serve with your turkey, in your stuffing and add to your puddings and drinks, but most of all, enjoy. sam@yourlocalcrowd.co.uk
PROTECT THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM AND LIVER Again due to the very high antioxidant content of cranberries, you can improve the function of your heart, lungs, circulatory system, and liver! Both dried and fresh cranberries are packed with antioxidants. Eating more cranberries is a great way to get the antioxidants needed for healthy cardiovascular function, as well as detoxifying your liver! DENTAL HEALTH It can benefit our dental health, by helping prevent bacteria from sticking to our teeth. It also helps to reduce inflammation in and around gums, which in turn prevents the risk of gum disease. PROTECTS AGAINST CANCER Not only can the cranberries help to reduce the swelling that may lead to cancer, but it can block a wide range of enzymes that contribute to the formation, growth, and spread of cancer cells. Cranberries are known to protect your body from a number of cancers, such as prostate cancer, breast

cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancer. It can prevent the cancer cells from triggering cellular death, which is part of what turns the cells in your body cancerous. The result: a healthier you with a much lower risk of carcinogens turning dangerous! BOOSTS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM Vitamin C is needed for a healthy immune system and cranberries are one of the best natural sources of Vitamin C. PREVENTS AND TREAT UTI’S Cranberries have long been used as a natural remedy for urinary tract infections (UTIs) Their high levels of antioxidents called proanthocyanidins help reduce bacteria from adhering to urinary tract walls, preventing them from causing infections. THE BEST WAY TO ENJOY CRANBERRIES Fresh of course! - A healthy fruit to enjoy as they come. They can also be frozen. In a smoothie – Low in calories, try blitzing a handful of cranberries with raspberries & strawberries, greek yogurt and almond milk – delicious. Cranberry Compote - Cook down to make a delicious compote, the perfect accompianment to your Christmas Turkey. Lolly Pops – Blend cranberries with greek yogurt, add some mint, lime or ginger and freeze into moulds. Ice Cubes – Freeze fresh cranberries into ice cube trays and add to your festive drinks or cocktails.

GREAT FOR DIGESTION! Being a fruit cranberries are high in fiber and one of the healthiest berries around thanks to their high vitamin C and antioxidant content. Dried cranberries are super rich in fiber, which is eliminated once juiced. Rich in antioxidants they also help to reduce inflammation. This can potentially help with rheumatoid arthritis, stomach and digestive disorders!

PROTECT YOUR HEATING HOMEOWNERS can take a few simple steps to prevent being a victim of theft. Theft of heating oil can have a big effect on victims, not only the loss of the oil itself but also the stress and cost of a boiler breakdown if there’s no oil in the tank. Taking these measures will help make life more difficult for would-be-thieves and also ensures your tank stays topped-up. Top tips for preventing the
theft of fuel and oil: • Be aware of your oil levels and check frequently • Where possible keep your levels low and the same when refilling • Speak to your supplier with regards to a more frequent but smaller delivery • If you have a plastic tank, consider erecting fencing around the tank with one end hinged and locked for filling purposes. The fencing should be fixed to solid
