History

Vikings, cattle and farmland...

discover the rich history of Cardigan Island

Just off the coast of Gwbert near the mouth of the Teifi estuary lies a small and little-known island, of about 35 acres. It has no occupants, no buildings and not so much as a tree. There is no easy access and no landing stage. Nevertheless, this little rocky isle still has some interesting stories to tell. WORDS: Glen Johnson

T

HERE is evidence of a human settlement of some sort on the island, including the traces of about five hut circles, which might date from the Iron Age. There is also a square feature, probably a building dating from the Post Roman period. It is interesting to note that a document of 1268 refers to the island by a Norse name – “Hasti Holm”, suggesting that the Vikings knew it well, and may even have occupied it. “Holm” simply means “Island”. “Hasti” may mean “Horses”, but it might also have been a personal name. There are clear marks of ridge and furrow ploughing right across the island, which suggest that it was cultivated during the Middle Ages. In later years it became part of the local estates, and, despite the difficulties involved, it was used for summer grazing. Imaging the joys of taking cattle or sheep by boat to this position, and the fun of trying to get the animals down

Cardigan Island the rocks to take them back to the mainland by boat in the autumn! In 1719 the ownership of the island passed to William Brigstocke of the Blaenpant estate. In 1859 the ketch ‘Morning Star’ was wrecked on the island on 25 October. In May 1920 W. M. Davies bought the island from the Blaenpant estate On March 15, 1934 the 17,000-ton Bibby liner, S. S. ‘Herefordshire’ was wrecked on the island with four men on board. An old passenger liner, she was bound for the Glasgow breakers and was under the tow of two tugs, when she broke free of her tethers and drifted onto the rocks. The four men climbed from the stricken ship onto the rocks and were rescued from the island by breeches buoy. The rats also reached the island from the stricken vessel and soon afterwards

killed off the once-thriving puffin colony. The ‘Herefordshire’ was a complete wreck, but a fair amount of salvage was taken from her before she broke up completely. In April 1944 The Pembrokeshire Bird Protection Society – who were affiliated with the R. S. P. B., leased the island for use as a bird sanctuary. In October 1971 “Viking” Soay sheep, which had been on the island since 1943, were removed – some of them by helicopter. An aerial photograph from January 1979 shows the early mediaeval earthworks on the island, as do many later images. There was some amusement caused a few years ago when wooden decoy puffins were placed on the island to try and entice back the real thing! The Teifi Estuary History Man www.glen-johnson.co.uk

Stories without voices

Reviews

Avnaskubi’s instrumental album

I’ll admit to first pressing ‘play’ on Avnaskubi’s instrumental album ‘Stories without Voices’ with a degree of scepticism – it’s certainly not something I’d have immediately picked up or downloaded myself. WORDS: Sally Sellwood For someone who usually takes their musical cues from the combination of lyrics and tune, it took a little time for the stories to be heard. Understand a little more about the inspirations for the music – landscapes, people,

emotions – and the album makes far more sense. Rooted in the West Wales landscape, yet with more than a nod to more urban settings, Avnsakubi takes the listener beyond the confines of conventional musical genres, layering beats,

instruments and rhythms to tell tales of places, personalities and feelings. Put aside your musical preconceptions and listen to the stories Avnaskubi has to tell us! www.avnaskubi.co.uk

Mandy Painting

My Life, My Dice Ok!

To be in Mandy’s company is to be enchanted, to be amused and to be asked poignant and sometimes downright personal questions! WORDS: Carwyn Davies Such is Amanda Painting-the person, the friend, the guesthouse proprietor-to name but a few of her ‘other’ personas… So it’s no coincidence that to be entertained, played and sung to by Mandy is both magical and captivating-she makes you laugh, pause, reflect and cry within minutes. It came as no surprise then that on Friday April 1st in Pontgarreg hall, as part of an audience of some eighty souls, we were treated to an evening of music, metaphysics and magic. Songs from Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Elton John amongst others-as well as her own compositions-were interspersed

with childhood memories, amusing anecdotes, wisdom and laughter all delivered in Mandy’s inimitable style-which if you haven’t already experienced, you must! Reflection, contemplation of a life more travelled-all washed down with a glass of complimentary redwas served in two mouth-watering halves-this is what we lucky people were served on a windy Spring evening in West Wales.
