NEWS FROM THE WELSH ASSEMBLY ELIN JONES AM Plaid Cymru, Ceredigion

Elin Jones with campaigners welcome back the “Cardi Bach” bus service

VICTORY FOR LOCALLY-LED CAMPAIGN ONE of the most rewarding parts of being an Assembly Member is working with local groups on campaigns which are important to their area. At the start of the year, one such campaign scored a notable success. Last September, the ‘Cardi Bach’ bus service, which linked many coastal communities in southern Ceredigion, came to an end along with the round of European funding on which it depended. This was a serious loss, both to inhabitants of many villages which are otherwise poorly-served by public transport, and to tourism. Since the inception of the all-Wales coastal path, walking tourism has been increasingly important along the spectacular Ceredigion coast. Tourism operators and other residents in area between New Quay and Cardigan got together to find a solution to the loss of the bus service, organised a petition to the Welsh Government. I raised the matter too, and the Transport Minister has, I’m delighted to say, recognised the value of the bus service, and agreed to provide funding to help restore it. There are details to be ironed out, but this is great news for local inhabitants, walkers and tourists alike – a real victory for a locally-led campaign.

Fis Medi diwethaf, daeth gwasanaeth bws y ‘Cardi Bach’, a oedd yn cysylltu cymunedau ar arfordir ddeheuol Ceredigion, i ben oherwydd diwedd yr arian Ewropeaidd oedd yn ei chynnal. Roedd hyn yn golled ddifrifol, i drigolion y pentrefi arfordirol sydd fel arall yn dioddef o ddiffyg cysylltiadau trafnidiaeth gyhoeddus, ac i dwristiaeth. Ers ffurfio llwybr arfordir Cymru gyfan, mae cerdded wedi dod yn rhan bwysicach fyth o’r diwydiant ymwelwyr ar hyd arfordir godidog Ceredigion. Penderfynodd pobl busnes twristiaeth a thrigolion eraill yn yr ardal rhwng Cei Newydd ac Aberteifi i ymgyrchu i arbed y gwasanaeth, gan drefnu deiseb i Lywodraeth Cymru. Codais innau’r mater hefyd, ac rwy’n falch iawn o ddweud fod y Gweinidog Trafnidiaeth wedi cydnabod pwysigrwydd y gwasanaeth, ac wedi addo cyllid i helpu adfer y ‘Cardi Bach’. Mae yna fanylion i’w cadarnhau, ond dyma newyddion gwych i bobl yr ardal, i gerddwyr ac i ymwelwyr – dyma fuddugoliaeth nodedig i ymgyrch leol.

GO GREEN

MIND THE MOULD by Ben Jones, Celtic Sustainables Dampness and mould can ruin a beautifully decorated room, but even more worryingly they can cause serious health issues. Problems can include infections, allergies, and asthma. The immune system can also be targeted. Some people are more likely to be affected than others, including children, the elderly, those with existing skin problems like eczema, those with respiratory issues such as allergies or asthma, and those with a weakened immune system. It is particularly important for these people to keep damp and mould at bay. Moulds produce allergens (substances causing allergic reactions), irritants, and toxic substances. Reactions such as asthma attacks, sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes, and skin rashes can result from touching or simply inhaling mould spores. Treating Damp and Mould Both damp and mould are caused by having excess moisture and cold surfaces in the house. Dampness can result from problems such as condensation, poor ventilation, poor circulation, leaking pipes, rising damp in basements or ground floors, or from rain entering through cracks and gaps in render, roofs, and around windows. New homes may be damp because water used during construction hasn’t yet dried out. Older houses are often damp because they have been treated incorrectly with modern methods and materials designed for modern houses, including plastic-based paints, damp-proof courses, solid wall insulation, and cement renders or mortars. Dampness is best treated by drying out a house of its excess moisture and improving ventilation. Whilst patience helps in newer homes, older homes will benefit from having plastic paints, damp-proofing, and cement removed in favour of breathable paints, lime wash, lime renders, and lime mortars. Severe cases of mould may require professional assistance, but smaller cases of less than 1 metre squared can typically be removed DIY-style. Before you start, remove any affected soft furnishings, clothes, or soft toys. Wash these yourself or

with the help of a professional. Treating Mould with the Auro Anti-Mould System Traditionally, people have used bleach to treat mould in the home. However, this can be damaging both to your health and your home. The Auro Anti-Mould System is an effective, environmentally-friendly, and healthy alternative. Begin treatment with Auro Mould Eliminator. Spray the chlorine-free disinfectant onto the mould and allow it to soak for at least an hour. Particularly bad spots should be left for longer. Wipe away with a sponge or brush, leaving nothing behind. Give the surface another thorough wiping down with a damp sponge or cloth. Follow up with Auro Mould Stop. Simply spray onto the affected surface and allow it to dry naturally. Areas previously affected by damp can be treated with Auro Anti-Mould Paint. This is a solvent-free, breathable, mineral-based paint with excellent coverage and which is highly resistant to re-infestation. Apply with a brush or roller to areas already treated for damp. Preventing Damp and Mould from returning When you’ve dealt with the issue once, you’ll want to make sure it doesn’t recur. Simple measures can help: • Put lids on saucepans, dry washing outdoors, and avoid using paraffin or bottled gas heaters • Open your bedroom window for 15 minutes each morning • Make sure your home is well insulated with breathable materials such as sheep wool • Heat your home a little more than usual or use a Calfire EcoFan to make your stove’s heat go further • Ventilate rooms and leave doors open except when cooking or showering, when it is best to close doors, open windows, and use extractor fans. All of the products mentioned in this article are available from Celtic Sustainables, either online at www.celticsustainables.co.uk, or from the shop at Unit 9, Parc Teifi, Cardigan, SA43 1EW. HEALTH

PROMOTING & SUPPORTING LOCAL by Sarah Tagg

HAPPY & HEALTHY IN 2015 Feel healthier, feeling fitter with more energy! The benefits of taking regular physical activity are well documented but why do we find it so difficult to stay motivated? The body was designed to move, regular physical activity makes you feel good and helps improve your mood! So what are you waiting for? Follow our top tips to kick start the active you and maintain an achievable active lifestyle for good. Getting started Find activity that makes you feel great not something you think you should be doing. Life is full of shoulds, make your activity central and do something that you look forward to and miss if you don’t do. OR include friends and ensure that something you find challenging is bearable because your friends are with you! What does being fitter mean to you? So often we start an exercise regime in January with no real thought about what we really want to achieve? Take some time to think about what being fitter means to you, not what it means to your best friend or partner - YOU! Set Goals Is there something you would like to be able to do in the next 4 - 6 months? Make this your goal, write it down, make it real. Next come the smaller goals that will help you reach your target - ie monthly goals • Challenging but achievable - Try and make your goal a positive one rather than negative, what can you actively achieve rather than always looking to lose something maybe lose weight or stop smoking. • Realistic - Make sure your goals are realistic and don’t overcommit yourself. • Specificity - make sure your activity plans will lead to achieving your goals. For instance embarking on a walking programme will be great for aerobic fitness and general health but no help if your goal was to overcome stiffness and to improve flexibility. Next step - put your plans into ACTION Remember: • Take one step at a time. Don’t jump straight to the 8th floor. • Pick an appropriate start level • Do try to be more active every day • Remember walking is a GREAT all round exercise which costs nothing • Fuel your body cut down on sugary snacks and drinks and add lots of fruit and vegetables to your meals Happy Healthy New Year!

There is a lot of science behind Aela, with some grand statements being made “Revolutionary technology”, “increased stem cell activity” “Activate tissue growth factors”, but with no harsh ingredients, replacing them with alternatives such as minerals & vitamins from kelp, I was keen to discover if this was a beauty range that worked for me. With dull & tired looking skin, and with an open mind, I set to work sampling the following Aela products: • Synergenique Tri Peptide Vitamin Complex Time Repair Serum (£60) A light easily absorbed serum, with a noticeably sweet smell. Only a small amount was needed and was quickly lapped up by my thirsty skin. It didn’t leave my skin at all oily and acted as the perfect base for the moisturizing cream. • Synergenique Vitamin Complex (£80) Quite a thick, rich cream, on application warmed to my skin and was again rapidly absorbed. I used this sparingly, a little rich for my skin type. Very delicately perfumed as opposed to the serum. • Synergenique Tri Peptide Complex (£110) Now of all the

products, this is without doubt the miracle cream. After a couple of weeks using the Synergenique Vitamin Complex, I switched to using the Tri Peptide Complex cream. Wow! I did see visible results with the Vitamin Complex, but following the switch soon discovered the big difference, firmer & fresher looking skin. The cream itself was much lighter, which I preferred. In my opinion, the perfect partner to the serum. The After Effects: As with a change in any beauty regime, there is always a period of adjustment. I did have a couple of small pimples after using the Synergenique Vitamin Complex (£80), which I soon discovered to be too rich for my particular skin type. All three products gave positive results but the most dramatic results were achieved using the Synergenique Tri Peptide Complex Face Cream (£110). My fine lines, laughter lines, and forehead creases were visibly reduced, leaving my skin feeling firmer with an even skin tone, allowing my make up to glide on and stay on for longer throughout the day. It may not go as far as the Vitamin Complex Face Cream and be a little more expensive, but if you have that extra expendable income, and are looking for that luxury product, this would be the cream I’d most recommend. HOT STONE MASSAGE - BODY MATTERS Cost: £30.00. Time: Approx 1Hr I’d tried such a massage at a different establishment some years ago and found the experience a little uncomfortable so was keen to try the massage again, to discover if it was me, just not liking the treatment, or if it was the treatment itself, just poorly executed. Greeted by the salon owner Lisa, we discussed what the treatment entailed and my therapist Heather soon led me to a treatment room. With my shoulders feeling like they were tight beneath my ears, after a hard week at work, I was looking forward to this acclaimed de-stressing massage. The treatment began with me lying facedown on a heated massage table, four warm stones were placed along my spine with Heather gently asking each time if they were comfortable. The sensation is a little strange as they are warm bordering on hot but after a second or two, my back slowly accepted the heat from the stone, allowing it to seep through my tight muscles. A soft towel was then placed over the stones, incubating the heat whilst Heather got to work on my legs. Using a warmed body oil of Lavender & Neroli essential oils blended into a sweet Almond Oil base, both legs received a firm massage, first with just her hands, followed by a massage using the stones. Again an odd

senstion, but not an unpleasant one. After a short while, my back received the same treatment and I slowly began to drift away into a world of my own, completely relaxing, allowing the weeks stresses to simply melt away. The warmth of the stones, gently releasing the knots in my back. Before I knew it, the treatment came to an end, the hour just slipped away, with Heather gently offering me a glass of water and allowing me five minutes to further relax. I was left to slowly get myself together & dress before returning to reception. This is all too often the point at which a treatment can be spoilt, by being rushed to vacate the room for the next booked treatment, but at Body Matters this is not the case. My therapist not only gave an excellent massage, but was also discreet and sensitive.Sheexplainedclearlyandconfidently, whatthetreatment involved and asked me to let her know if the amount of pressure was right or wrong. For me she hit just the right balance and I left feeling relaxed and ready for the day and week ahead. If you’ve stuck with the traditional massage, try stepping out of your comfort zone and book a hot stone massage with Body Matters in Cardigan. You will be pleasantly suprised just how de-stressing the treatment will be. Cardigan, Ceredigion. SA43 1JS. Phone: 01239 614581

WHAT’S GOING ON DOWN AT THE RANGE How much do you know about ‘the range’? You know, the one at Aberporth. No, not a golf range, a weapons testing range… The presence of the MOD Aberporth Range, (actually at Parcllyn) is a subject of some controversy, that’s for sure. You may not agree with the defence industry – certainly most of us would prefer there not to be situations requiring recourse to military action, and you may not be too happy that such a facility is sited here on the spectacular West Wales coast. But putting all that aside, how much do you really know about what goes on there and what the presence of the Range does to support thelocal community? There’s been a Range on the current site since 1939 when the Honourable Artillery Company needed somewhere for gunnery practice, faced with the outbreak of WW2. The Projectile Development Establishment came along shortly afterwards, has been in use as a site for research development testing and evaluation for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) since then, recently marking its 75th anniversary. Today, the Range is operated Above: A target by QinetiQ on behalf of the MOD, Barge in Cardigan and provides a safe and secure Bay; the tower; a environment for the testing of weapons and helicopter flying air-launched over Cardigan Bay Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) as and thr Aberporth well as opportunities for training coastline for our armed forces. It’s a ‘year © QinetiQ 2014 round’ operation, with multiple trials and tests taking place on most working days, out in controlled space of over 6,500km2 of sea in Cardigan Bay. The facility provides a significant amount of employment and economic support in the area. There are around 200 employees on site, most of whom live locally,

and local businesses benefit from contracts to work with the Range providing manufacturing services, vehicle maintenance and vehicle and vessel hire. The ‘year round’ nature of the activities also means a steady stream of visitors supporting local hotels restaurants and shops. QinetiQ is also rightly proud of its apprenticeship scheme – the company is committed to aiming for 5% of its overall UK headcount being on a formalised apprentice, sponsored student or graduate programme, and apprenticeships are available at Aberporth and also at the range at Pendine on the South Wales coast. The apprenticeships on offer at Aberporth are mainly technical and engineering based and are a great way to learn and develop ‘on the job’ skills in these areas. Employees also take part in outreach programmes to encourage school and college students in the area to consider careers in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It sounds rather ironic to say that one of the purposes of all this testing – particularly where weapons are concerned – is to render the weapons concerned as safe as possible, but that’s the idea: to ensure that when weapons are deployed on operations they are done so accurately, and don’t misfire, reducing the likelihood of what is termed ‘collateral damage’. Although high explosives are not always involved at the testing stage, safety is understandably a top priority for QinetiQ, which monitors the air and sea space and works with mariners, local fishermen and pilots to maintain an appropriate, safe area before conducting any activity. Anyone concerned about where the trials might be taking place on any day can find a weekly programme on the website. http://www.aberporth.qinetiq.com/public-safety-info/Pages/mariners.aspx The company also monitors the area for marine life and uses a bespoke marine mammal detection system to monitor for dolphins and other marine life before trials go ahead. The engineer who designed this won a coveted ‘Silver Otter’ award. In addition, the ‘target barges’ out in Cardigan Bay are monitored for sunbathing seals… Part of the site is also a SSSI with unique areas of hanging oak woodlands, habitats that are protected by the Range. It could be tempting to dismiss the benefits of the Range to this area in a cloud of anti-establishment rhetoric but having understood more of what it contributes to the area – and to the United Kingdom as a whole, perhaps this would be misguided.

MEMPHIS BELLE Mike & Michelle bring Country Music to Wales

Who are Mike & Michelle and what brought you to Wales? Michael Harrison is a retired Musician who, after 50+ years in the music industry, has found himself in the village of St Dogmaels where he met me! Mike was doing a weekly Open Mic night in The White Heart pub and I was hounded by my children to get up to sing and the rest as they say is history! That was two years ago now and we have got busier and busier, traveling from the local pubs in Cardigan to South and North Wales. Why Country Music? I have grown up listening to Country music and I’ve always loved it. Its upbeat and easy listening and you cant help but tap your feet and sing along. Country music suits my voice and people seem to really enjoy listening to us. What’s your most memorable performance? We took part in the Battle of the Bands in The Rockfield Country Music Festival in Monmouth last June and that has been our most enjoyable and memorable performance so far. The Country Music scene is great fun and the followers really are like a family. It was a fantastic weekend and we met some fantastic people. What is the toughest part about performing? The toughest part for me is nerves; they always get the better of me until I’ve sung a few songs but once we get going I really enjoy it. There’s no better feeling than seeing people really enjoying it and that is what makes the nerves go away Do you suffer from stage fright? I do get stage fright, Mike doesn’t but he’s an old hand at it!! We always have a great audi-

ence so that makes it easier. We have followers that come to every gig to watch us which is really flattering, its nice to know people enjoy it that much that they are prepared to travel all over the place to listen to us. What one prop or part of your costume couldn’t you live without and why? My Boots!!.... I love my cowboy boots, and for Mike it’s his hat!! He never goes on stage without it…I think it’s because he’s balding and he doesn’t want people to see!! How often do you rehearse/practice? We try and rehearse at least once a week, more if we can. We are always learning new songs and listening to music for ideas of new things to sing. I would rehearse every day if I could it’s so much fun, I really enjoy it and I’d love to do it more! What advice would you give to anyone else who is thinking of forming a band or group? The only advice I could really give is that if you really want it then go for it. I was always too shy to sing in front of anyone, and now it’s all I want to do. Its hard work at times and requires a lot of commitment but if your willing to put the effort in then I would always say go for it. Do you have a fan club? We do yes, and they are great! We have people from Haverfordwest that come to watch us and we have a group of lovely ladies in Cardigan who love to come and watch when they can. We also have a following on Facebook and have our own channel on You Tube, where people can keep up with all our up coming gigs and anything else we have going on. We have a CD for sale and hopefully in the future we will have many more. Sum up in one sentence what it’s like to live in Wales? Being Welsh I would say it’s a great place to live, the Welsh are warm and welcoming and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Follow Memphis Belle on Facebook

SOCIAL MEDIA

by Sally Sellwood

TIME TO JOIN THE SOCIAL MEDIA PARTY? New Year, New Marketing Strategy? 2015 destined to be the year you embrace social media for your business? Sally Sellwood of Teifi Social explains why you’re right to want to join the social media party, and shares some top tips to help you get started.

AS a small local business, surely you don’t need to worry about maintaining a Facebook page or a Twitter account – everyone knows who you are and where you are, don’t they? But people are busy, and social media allows you to remind them that you are there, to engage with customers and build relationships, and let existing and potential customers know what’s new for your business. It’s a fact that social media now has a big influence on how people make spending choices, whether they are buying a latte, a bag of dog food or accountancy services. In rural areas, social media can help you attract customers from a wider area. Being active on social media in a business capacity allows you to network with other businesses in a cost effective way. Social media allows online businesses to reach far beyond their local geographical area, driving traffic to your websites and increasing sales. Social media is very much a ‘level playing field’ –free

Think about how much time realistically you have to spend on social media

to access, if you spend some time ‘getting it right’ you can achieve great things, developing your business ‘ personality’, connecting with customers, maintaining and strengthening the relationship you may already have with them either from face to face contact, or from virtual contact such as email. Like all marketing strategies, running successful business social media accounts takes thought and time – if you’re a small business, already pushed to the max, carving out another hour in the day can be hard. However take heart and know that if you approach social media in an organised fashion, and understand what you are doing, and looking to achieve, you should find that it becomes easier to manage your business social media accounts. What do you want to achieve from social media? Take time to develop your strategy. Consider which platforms are going to help you best. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and LinkedIn all have advantages and disadvantages and need to be managed in slightly different ways. Investigate what each one can offer your business; Ask your customers – and if possible, potential customers – which social media platforms they already use. How much time, realistically, do you have to spend on social media? You’ll need time to set up your social media pages correctly – creating a proper business profile, and you need to post interesting content regularly – an inactive page or profile is almost worse than none at all. What will you say and how will you say it? Sharing advice and experience is one way to engage on social media, allowing you to establish yourself as an expert in your field. Remember that social media is, at the very least, a dialogue, so take time to engage with your followers, and other users. Invest in a smart phone and investigate scheduling tools. Integrating your accounts in one online platform allows you to plan and think ahead. This won’t stop you interacting at other times, but it allows you to maintain a regular presence. Used effectively, social media is a great tool for your business, allowing you to connect with customers and potential customers and ultimately generate income. You’ve made the right decision to join the social media party – good luck.

SPRING

by Katerina Sutton Once upon a time the Father of Creation touched the Earth and she gave birth to four children. He named each one according to their qualities and character. The first was strong and able so he named him Winter. The second was nimble and hardworking so he named him Spring. The third was creative and full of colour so he named her Summer and the fourth created fruit and vegetables and painted beautiful colours on the trees so he named her Autumn. Each was given 3 months to dance upon the earth and then they had to hand the baton onto the next one. Spring danced first bringing strong winds and rains to soften the ground. As he danced green shoots sprouted and buds burst open scattering colour across the earth’s snow covered ground. The snow began to melt and then he handed the baton to Summer. She formed the buds into beautiful, fragranced flowers and brought the first fruits of harvest. Then she handed the baton to Autumn whose dance yielded all kinds of fine harvests. She painted the leaves with rich bright colours, reds, oranges, yellows, browns and gold. Then she handed the baton on to Winter. Winter had watched each gifted dancer creating colours and fragrances and wholesome fruits but what did he have to offer? He sat on his bench and began to sob. His tears turned to snow upon the now frozen land. Seeing his son weep the Father of creation came alongside his son. ‘Why are you so downcast?’ he asked. ‘Because I have no gifts of beauty. I dance only death and decay’ he wept. The Father put his arm around him and comforted him. ‘Son, don’t you see, your gifts are precious and vital. Without death there can be no life. Without suffering and hardship there can be no appreciation of the good and wholesome. A seed must first die before it can give birth to life. Life is full of seasons. There is a time for death and a time for reaping. A time for sorrow and a time for rejoicing. For character to

26

be developed there must be death of self, self-denial, self sacrifice, dying of self brings mercy and forgiveness and service to others. Struggle and hardship bring perseverance and character. You are the strongest of your siblings and your dance takes courage and strength. I will crown you with another gift to brighten your task. It is the gift of Christmas when all people will give gifts to each other to show their love and appreciation. They will sing carols and celebrate and it will be a season of Joy, for it is the time when the greatest sacrifice for all mankind will be remembered. Winter realised that his season was of great value so he danced enthusiastically until it was time to hand his baton on to Spring. Spring, Summer and Autumn had all overheard the conversation and realised it gave their own season more meaning. Spring danced with a new sense of purpose for his was the task to bring hope to all mankind. Where there had been hardships, broken dreams, death, disaster or sickness in the winter of people’s lives, he would bring new hope and vision and the perseverance to get up and rebuild their lives. He gave them new dreams teaching that the fruit of their sacrifices would come to fruition and fulfilment. He brought forth the buds of hope and the dark days of winter grew distant becoming warmer and brighter with the daily promise of new dreams. GROW, PICK, COOK

WILD GARLIC

by Jen Goss Spring is such a special time of year, the snowdrops, daffodils, bluebells, and the pungent and delicious wild garlic with such a beautiful white blossom. You can forage this in our shady hedgerows, look out for a round white blossom with several flowers and glossy green long leaves, it’s the leaves you are looking for, but the flowers and buds can be eaten too. You’ll known you’ve found the right thing because it will smell…..of garlic. As with any foraging, only take when there is plenty growing, if you harvest the only plant in an area it cant grow back and multiply.

Wild Garlic Pesto • 2 handfuls/100g wild garlic leaves with flowers • 200ml extra virgin olive oil, plus more for sealing • 50g pine-nuts or walnuts • 50g parmesan, grated • salt and pepper • 1 large jar, sterilized (just put the jar in an regular oven for 20 minutes) Blanch the wild garlic leaves in boiling water for 10 seconds and refresh under cold water and pat dry on kitchen paper. Put the wild garlic, olive oil, nuts into a food processor and blend to a coarse puree, transfer to a bowl and add the parmesan, season and mix. Put into cooled jar and pour over a little olive oil to seal and cover tightly. This freezes really well (pop in a plastic tub or small bag) or keeps in the fridge for about a week. Use on pasta and pizzas, jacket potatoes or bruschetta, or eat by the spoonful when no-one is looking. SEEK STRUCTURED GUIDANCE ON NEW BUSINESS

© Adamr. FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Phew! The January self-assessment deadline is now behind us and the last minute rush for people to file their tax returns before the ‘Jan 31 cut-off’ is over. February and March are good months to take a deep breath and assess what are the opportunities and challenges of the new year. For many people, thoughts will turn to setting up a new business. If you are setting up a new business, you may assume that you don’t need to involve an accountant until it’s time to prepare a set of accounts and file a tax return. This underestimates the added value of having a knowledgeable professional on your side from the start.

An accountant will ensure that you register for taxes on time and that you tick all the right boxes when it comes to tax compliance. However, the “Chartered” qualification, whether it is “ACA” or “FCA”, is a business qualification and a qualified Chartered accountant will be able to assist you in many different areas besides taxation. Here are four reasons why it makes good business sense to engage a Chartered accountant before you set up your business. Business plan: When you start a business it’s tempting to focus on promoting and selling your product or services right away. This is understandable, but don’t rush in without a clear business plan. Go over every aspect of your proposed activities as carefully as possible before you start trading. You may already have put an outline plan together, but have you accurately factored in all the costs associated with your business? A chartered accountant can provide more than just a second opinion and will have an excellent understanding not only of what costs you’re likely to incur, but of how to finance the business as well as providing tips and advice on what you may offset against tax. An accurate business plan backed up with efficient tax

planning will provide a firm platform on which to launch a business and ensure that there are no unforeseen costs lurking around the corner. What trading structure? The next step is to think about what form your business should take - a sole trader or a limited company, a partnership or a limited liability partnership? Making the wrong decision about a trading structure at the start could have dramatic implications for you. Not only can it affect how you hold property and contracts, but it will also affect the rate of tax you pay and availability of different types of tax relief. A Chartered accountant can talk through these options with you and advise on what’s right for your specific situation. Systems, software and accounting: Not everyone’s idea of dynamic business practice, but putting the appropriate management information, accounting and bookkeeping systems in place before you start trading will help you run your business as efficiently as possible. A Chartered accountant will know which systems will benefit you the most, so ensuring you have all the information you need to make your business profitable. Installing good systems from the outset will save you time and money sooner than you think. Here at Clay Shaw Butler, we are experts in Sage software, being fully-accredited Sage business partners. Financial advice: Almost all young businesses need to borrow money at some point, either at launch or when they’re looking to expand. With the present economic climate, borrowing from banks may not be possible. A Chartered accountant will be able to suggest a number of alternative options, from venture capital to a range of central and even local government grants. All borrowing options have their positives and negatives, and being able to draw on your accountant’s expertise will help you decide on the most appropriate financing for you. Using a qualified chartered accountant to help you plan and set up your business isn’t an excessive luxury, it’s a sensible investment that will reap dividends for years to come. Here at Clay Shaw Butler, Mark Jones is a chartered accountant and chartered tax advisor and is well equipped to mitigate your tax liabilities. DYFED-POWYS POLICE have recently launched a new online tool, which allows the public to give feedback on the service they receive from Dyfed Powys Police. Called Rate your Local Police, the system enables people to log on and feedback on any interaction they’ve had with the Force based on a five star rating – similar to Trip Advisor. There is also space for the public to provide additional comments and information. Dyfed Powys Police are one of three Forces piloting this new tool and are the only force in Wales taking part. The system has been created to enhance public confidence in policing, help identify any areas for improvement and provide another way for people to get in touch. It also allows the Force to easily respond to feedback. Rate your Local Police has been designed specifically for leaving feedback and is not a forum for people to make formal complaints. These still have to be submitted via the website or in writing. Anyone who has recently dealt with the police can rate the service they’ve received at https://www.rateyourlocalservice. co.uk/dyfedpowyspolice/ Chief Constable Simon Prince said: “Dyfed Powys Police wanted to provide the public with a quick and simple way of giving honest feedback about the service they receive. If you’ve had good service from someone in the Force or would like to let us know about something you think we can improve, we want to hear from you. “Previous public surveys show that our customer satisfaction rating is 86% and I hope that this new tool will help see this figure rise. I’m incredibly proud that our Force is the only

DYFED-POWYS POLICE - RECENT ONLINE DEVELOPMENTS Force in Wales taking part. We are able to provide a new service for the people living in Carmarthenshire, Powys, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion. Police and Crime Commissioner Christopher Salmon said: “I’m delighted that this tool has been created for the people of Dyfed Powys to provide open and honest feedback about the service they receive from the police. I hope that this tool will encourage people to feedback on positive experiences but also inform the Force of areas they think can be enhanced.” In addition to the new “Rate your Local Police”, the Dyfed-Powys Police website has recently been improved and re-launched. PS Alison Rees advises that “the force website now includes new ways for the public to contact us, via the site, to report a crime or something that has happened. It obviously should not be used to report a crime that requires immediate attention,butcouldbeusefulfornon-urgent matters and increases the way in which we are accessible to the public”. The design of the Homepage was chosen after a public vote last October, and focuses on three key areas of information: • Dyfed-Powys Police current messages and campaigns; • Information about what is going on in our communities; • Most popular pages being accessed by visitors to the site. Recently these have included “Join the Police”, “News”, “In your area” and “Contact us”. This is a continuation of the ongoing work to improve the way in which people can access police services, and has been designed to be easily accessible via computers, mobile devices and tablets. The site can be accessed at: www.dyfed-powys.police.uk
