YOUR PERFECT HOLIDAY...

...is here in West Wales

Image © Crown copyright (2017) Visit Wales

To say that an area ‘has it all’ would be to use an old cliché, and yet, West Wales really does have something to offer everyone. From adventure and education to rest and relaxation, mountains to coast, and everything in between, it’s all here – what are you waiting for?

6 | www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

West Wales is steeped in history. The setting for many of the stories in the oldest prose literature of Britain, the Mabinogion, West Wales is home to kings, queens, saints, Neolithic man and everything in between. It’s also an area steeped in folklore and tradition. From St Davids, home to our patron saint in Pembrokeshire, the industrial heritage of Carmarthenshire and the maritime traditions of Ceredigion, the area hums with vibrations from the past at ancient burial sites, castles and the very network of ancient lanes that criss-cross the area. One of the show-stopping attractions of West Wales is the landscape itself – rolling hills, sweeping beaches, rocky coves. While the traditions of the past may form the backdrop to your time here, you can take part in some of the latest adventurous pursuits, all of which make the most of the stunning surroundings you’ll find yourself in. Kayaking, coasteering, diving, paddle boarding are all available around the West Wales coast. The Cambrian Mountains in Ceredigion, and the Preseli Mountains, the backbone of Pembrokeshire, offer walking, running, mountain biking – under the watchful eyes of the red kites soaring the skies. Your ‘outdoors’ experience doesn’t need to end once you’ve handed back your life jackets, or taken off your cycle helmets. West Wales has a number of unique places to camp – whether you want to park your camper van a stone’s throw from the beach, or enjoy some ‘glamping’, there’s a camp site to suit you. Many will let you have open fires, and, because there is so little light pollution, as the sun goes down, you can stargaze to your heart’s content. Renowned for its craft and design, many designer makers and those involved in artisan production here offer

Guide

opportunities to have hands on experiences that aren’t always available elsewhere. If you can squeeze in some time between everything else while you’re here in West Wales, why not invest in a new skill. You can spend time at workshops throughout Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire learning everything from cooking to foraging, leatherwork to jewellery making. If all this sounds a bit energetic, there’s plenty of rest and relaxation to be had in luxurious country house and spa hotel accommodation throughout the counties of Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion. Enjoy boutique shopping or laze about on one of our stunning beaches. There’s a myriad of cafes and restaurants serving up mouthwatering platefuls, so even self catering won’t be a chore – although West Wales is brimming with fresh, local produce which will have you heading for the kitchen. A welsh cake, subtly spiced and hot from the griddle, sprinkled with sugar is one of life’s simple pleasures. There’s fabulous fish and seafood, sustainably raised meat, delicious fresh vegetables. Add in the wealth of talented professionals creating breads, preserves, cheeses, cakes, wines and spirits, and you’ll start to understand why Wales is the ultimate foodie destination. With museums and heritage centres, a huge variety of outdoor pursuits, and a wealth of relaxing retreats, West Wales makes the perfect holiday destination. And for those of us that live here – why go anywhere else?!

Gardening

GARDENING

Prepare your garden now and reap the rewards in the summer sam@yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

Spring – always welcome, and never more so than after the dull, cold & wet winter we’ve had here on the West Coast. Hopefully, with Winter now a distant memory, Spring brings with it more opportunities to get out into the garden and give it some TLC after the battering of the past few months. There’s plenty to be getting on with – here are our Spring gardening tips to keep you on track and your garden beautiful! Hopefully by now your bulbs will be blooming, and Spring blossom will be enticing you into the garden. Your priority will most probably be to get on top of the weeds before they run riot, and to get on with sowing seeds for the rest of the year.

TO DO LIST Spring is the time to get to grips with your borders. Weed and tidy them up, then mulch with manure or compost. It’s also a good time to lift and divide herbaceous perennials, and prune your roses. Cut back dogwood

8 | www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

@ylcrowd

and willow for colourful interest next Winter. Sow hardy annuals outside and half hardy annuals in a heated propagator. Plant summer flowering bulbs, and, in the veg patch, onion sets, shallots and early potatoes can go in. You will need to start cutting the grass as it starts to grow. After the wet weather we’ve experienced, it’s likely that the grass will be growing pretty enthusiastically. Remember to wait for dry days before getting the mower out. Any areas of lawn that are bare can be over-seeded, and Spring is also a good time to feed your lawn and generally check it over. Moss can be dealt with effectively in Spring too. As the weather warms up, you can start to open vents on the greenhouse. As space becomes available inside your greenhouse, you can pot up cuttings taken from tender perennials, and take more cuttings from the largest plants, if necessary, to bulk up plant numbers. As the season progresses, weeding remains a priority. However, with the growing season well and truly underway, you’ll start to see rewards from your efforts. As you move into April, make sure to keep on top of feeding hungry shrubs and roses and other plants that may need it. Tie in climbing and rambling roses, and watch out for late frosts! By May, you should find the herbaceous borders starting to come into their own. Take the opportunity to divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs, and as the month draws to an end, plant out summer bedding.

CROWD CONTROL... stand around looking up at a building. Point and keep saying “Did you see that?” “Can you see what’s going on up there?” See how many people you get crowded round all looking and pointing and then quietly walk away and leave them to it.

OFFER ‘BOILED EGGS’ FOR BREAKFAST... Use eggs that you have carefully prepared the previous evening, blowing out the white through a tiny hole. GLUE COINS TO THE FLOOR. Simple but effective. FAKE CAKE... everyone loves cake – but perhaps not this one! Get a plastic bowl or cardboard box (not too big), place it on a cake plate then ice and decorate as if it was a cake. Leave I somewhere conspicuous with a big sign on it saying ‘eat me’ and see what happens… RESET GOOGLE LANGUAGE PREFERENCES TO KLINGON... another prank that requires a bit of forward planning but if you have access to a colleague’s computer, why not give them a surprise by changing their language preferences to something a bit more

Health

YES…

EATING CHOCOLATE THIS EASTER COULD ACTUALLY BENEFIT YOUR HEALTH With Easter fast approaching and having only just finished off the Christmas tin of chocolates, those of you trying to be good may well dread this time of year. However there is no need to feel guilty, as eating a small, yes a small, amount of chocolate can actually have some health benefits. sam@yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

IT’S GREAT BRAIN FOOD Chocolate contains flavinols, which are thought to reduce memory loss in the elderly, so there is hope for me yet! It also has anti-inflamatory qualities.

IT’S A MOOD BOOSTER I don’t now about you, but I certainly have a few moments of joy when I eat chocolate. It’s well known to lighten your mood. Just don’t eat too much or this will be followed by guilt.

healthy is its inflammation-fighting properties, which reduces cardiovascular risk.

IMPROVES GOOD BLOOD FLOW Chocolate or the cocoa in chocolate provides blood thinning properties. These work in a similar way to aspirin, which can improves blood flow and circulation.

CHOCOLATE HELPS PROTECT YOUR SKIN!

There is an ingredient found in chocolate which seems to help with a cough by reducing the activity in the part of the brain that triggers a cough.

Yes, eating too much will give you a spot breakout, but eaten sparingly, dark chocolate is actually good for your skin! Rich in flavonoids offer some protection from UV damage from the sun. However, don’t take that as meaning you don’t need to use sunscreen, continue to slap it on.

IT’S GOOD FOR HEART HEALTH

IT MAY FIGHT DIABETES!

One of the reasons dark chocolate is especially heart-

Recent studies have shown that eating a small amount

of chocolate regularly increases insulin sensitivity, thereby reducing the risk of diabetes. I’m dubious about this one!

HAPPY MUMS AND TOTS

IMPROVES VISION As stated earlier, it improves blood flow, particularly to the brain, thereby increasing the blood flow to the retina, improving vision.

A study found that as chocolate reduced stress levels in expectant mums, their babies smiled more.

ITS FILLING! No we don’t mean eat chocolate by the bucket load! But as dark chocolate is rich in fibre, this in turn helps keeps you fuller for longer. Just one small square of dark chocolate should satisfy your sweet tooth and prevent you from snacking on fatty foods. Great in theory but if like me you struggle to stop at just one square of chocolate, don’t open the packet at all!

IT’S MINERAL RICH Dark chocolate is packed full of good mineral, potassium, zinc and selenium. A 100mg bar of dark chocolate provides 67% of the RDA of iron.

Education

READ IT DON’T WEEP

Understanding Your Child’s Literature Challenges thepembstutor@gmail.com

Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s was a delight that the students of today will never fully appreciate or understand. The Rubik’s Cube was still regarded as a mild form of magic with those able to harness its power viewed with equal awe and suspicion, Angel Delight was a legitimate and thoroughly appropriate dessert regardless of occasion and Saturday morning TV was such an institution that had suffrage been extended to kids of the age of 11 upwards, Philip Schofield would have been voted Prime Minister by a landslide. We were young, we were free and more often than not, we kept our teeth nice and clean. But for me, the two people who characterised my 80’s and 90’s childhood, those I leant on as a young person in times of doubt, woe or escapism and who ultimately inspired me to teach were one Mr Roald Dahl and one Master Adrian Albert Mole. Their importance to me and my love for them cannot be measured. The lurid, vicious and fantastical images created by Dahl and the mistaken, mundane but constantly hysterical world inhabited by Adrian, (aged 13 and three quarters and thereafter) gave me and so many others my age an outlet to imagine and to laugh, experiences often overlooked in later years when choosing literature, yet so vital in any child’s early exchanges with the written word. How we laughed. Consequently, how we remember – sometimes word for word. While Dahl comfortably stands the test of time in terms of his accessibility to today’s children and Adrian Mole is very often an undiscovered gem for teenagers looking for humour and poor relationship advice (I learnt so much from Pandora’s often brutal treatment of Adrian’s emotions!) the real beauty of these books and an important point of the message

14 | www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

@Pembs_tutor

here was in their appeal to adults; principally my parents. I found immense comfort and delight in knowing that my parents both understood and most importantly, loved what I was reading as much as I did and on many occasions found humour and subtle sadness in parts of the stories which my younger eyes had overlooked. I yearned to understand. To understand why Adrian’s mum left him and his malingering father to live a life in Sheffield with the ‘ratfink’ Mr Lucas, why, in George’s Marvellous Medicine, George’s father isn’t especially disappointed to see his erstwhile mother-in-law go whizzing through the air and explode in a cloud of old aged dust and to fully realise the secret behind why Adrian’s best friend Nigel thought a Mary Quant make-up hamper was a better Christmas present than a racing bike. My parents understood. And as time went by and I read and read again, knowing smiles were exchanged, eureka moments were had and a mutual appreciation of the books we had read were born and have never left us to this day. Always read what your children read. As an English and History teacher my advice to parents of children of all ages is to understand and appreciate the literature and topics that your children choose or that which they have been set the task of understanding. From an early stage we begin the task of imbuing our children with a love of imagining and in doing so, strive to create a passion for independent reading; we do the bedtime stories, we create the silly voices and there isn’t a wicked witch nor a beautiful princess that we haven’t described in wonderful detail. In most cases – and understandably so – this process of

Education

reading together slows and then occasionally ceases. We read Hilary Mantel and Iain Banks, they read…..well, what do they read?! And herein lies the point; there gradually appears a chasm between what we know our children know, what we suspect they understand and what we understand they feel, both in life and, in the case of this article, in their approach to literature. We rightfully expect our children’s literary journey to be overseen by their teachers, safe in the knowledge that the foothold in reading and writing that you have created will allow them to scale the walls of Chaucer, the circumstances surrounding the Treaty of Versailles or The Great American Novel. The job is done – in most cases, done well and lovingly and to the best of our ability. This is a natural and substantiated assumption because, lets face it, schools should always provide a strong principle basis for learning and certainly should take responsibility for developing the in-depth enquiry and interpretive skills of our children that we have fostered from an early age. Added to this, as our children get older their assumption that we do not know or understand their work or studies can lead to a stand-off between parent and child where details given about their workload are scant, answers are truculent and brief and there begins a frustrating game of Cat and Mouse where you would offer your help if only they would stop being so evasive and tell you the essay title! Being helpful without being invasive is a key ingredient of a successful working relationship between parent and child where school work is concerned and managing to get the balance is a magic that, if it were bottled, would sell in the millions. Where literature is concerned, do not be afraid to make a note of the texts they are covering and buy yourself a copy. Read, ingest and understand. Always let your child know that you are doing this but take time to formulate your own points of view and ideas concerning

the text and wait until they have finished either the chapter they are focussing on or the whole book before entering into any discussions. Active debate should play a part in the development of ideas and assertions where literature is concerned and only by sharing views, receiving insight and being given the opportunity to constructively disagree will a student be able to crystallize and review the opinions that they have. Take time to sit with your child and discuss themes or characters, parts of the book or topic you enjoyed and vitally, the areas of the text you may have struggled with. Learning at home and in the company of trusted loved ones is a valuable addition to the structure and setting that your child will receive at school and developing the confidence to discuss their views and findings to others is a key development area for all young people in both their studies and the process of becoming a dynamic and intelligent learner. Never underestimate the power of being able to interpret and discuss what your child is learning and being able to discuss their learning with them. This is never more important than when approaching their English and literature-based studies, a subject which depend on discourse, debate and the sharing of perspective. As a parent you will be supporting your child’s learning whilst – hopefully – remaining unobtrusive. Moreover, you will develop an appreciation of the challenges facing them throughout their studies and maybe, just maybe, you’ll discover some of the magic that only reading a wonderful book can provide. Everyone needs an Adrian Mole eh? Happy trails. The Pembs Tutor ‘I am a Pembrokeshire-based mobile tutor of English and History, both of which I teach to A-Level. I am a former Head of Department of both subjects. ’ Email: thepembstutor@gmail.com Twitter: @Pembs_tutor www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk | 15

SPRING BEAUTY TIPS sam@yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

@ylcrowd

LOSE THE FOUNDATION

USE A GOOD PRIMER

Rich creamy foundations are great for the winter, but now spring has arrived, lighten the load on your face and instead invest in a good CC Cream for the more natural look.

Essential for the warmer months to help your makeup last longer.

Again, during the colder winter months our skin needs a rich and nourishing moisturizer, but during the warmer months, our skin can become oily. A great way to combat this, along with the blackheads and spots is to hydrate the skin with a lighter serum instead. Quickly absorbed, leaving your skin with a soft glow.

WATERPROOF MAKE-UP

BLOTTING SHEETS These little beauties make all the difference between dewy skin and greasy skin. A quick blot half way through the day rescues many faces.

USE A GOOD MAKEUP REMOVER Remove every trace of make-up before bed, not only does this save your sheets but also your skin.

TORY BURCH Eau de Parfum

MISS DIOR Blooming Bouquet

With the weather warming up, well hopefully it will happen soon, none of us want to look sweaty and have our make-up slide off. Invest in some good waterproof makeup. For me waterproof mascara is a must.

Get rid of that dull dry winter skin with a good exfoliante. Be careful not to over exfoliate, you really only need to do this a couple of times a week to keep your skin gorgeous and glowing.

Health & Wellbeing

7 Tips to losing weight healthily and for the long term There is no doubt about it, a large proportion of us have put on some extra pounds over the winter, and maybe we were carrying a few before that. Now that Spring has sprung it’s time to think about getting healthier, feeling better and reducing your risk of health conditions. So, if you are looking to lose weight, how can you do it healthily and in a way that will last? It’s no secret – you need to be more active, eat healthier and generally take time to look after yourself. me@exerciseyoufreedom.com

@Bird_Sol_

1. STOP KIDDING YOURSELF!

3. GIVE YOURSELF REALISTIC GOALS

If I had a pound (money now not weight!) for every time someone said to me that they do eat healthily or they are active, but when you really get them to think about it, they have large portions, snack on bad things, drink lots or only walk the dog when the weather is nice. It’s time to get real with yourself. Start by making a food diary for 7 days of what you genuinely eat. Get a pedometer, see how many steps you do and do a diary of how much exercise you do.

Once you have your long-term goal (summer holiday, wedding, certain birthday), think about what changes you could make now, that will help you to get there. Try and think of steps rather than a particular measurement, e.g. swap your snacks for healthier ones, how many times you are going to be active in a week etc. Be realistic and build on your steps each week. If looking at weight, allowing for 1-2lb a week/2 weeks is realistic if looking at changing diet and activity levels .

2. FOCUS ON MEASUREMENTS OTHER THAN WEIGHT The problem with measuring weight is that for 1lb of fat, 1lb of muscle is ¼ - 1/3 of the size. If you increase your activity, you could lose inches off of your waist, look better, feel better and fit into smaller clothes – yet be exactly the same weight because of increased muscle. Therefore, also measuring your waist would be better.

22 | www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

4. LOOK AT THE QUALITY OF YOUR FOOD If you are looking to lose weight then you need to eat less calories. This doesn’t always mean fewer food. Sometimes just readjusting the quality and proportions of food can make a big difference. For example, a full plate of bean chilli with freshly cooked sauce and brown rice has less calories than beef mince with a jar of sauce and white rice. Not only this, it will hold more nutrition. Try to avoid low fat varieties of food – often they can be high in sugar – swap for naturally low fat versions or cut down the amount.

5. LOOK AT HOW MUCH YOU’RE EATING You’ve readjusted the quality of your food and still not shifting the b e lly ?

Health & Wellbeing It’s time to look at volume. Reducing portion sizes, cutting out some of the snacks and cutting down on alcohol. Buy a smaller plate, have less snacks, swap pints for bottles of beer, doubles for singles.

6. GET ACTIVE Although the saying goes ‘a six pack is made in the kitchen’, being active assists weight loss by burning more overall calories both during exercise, and post. To maximise the proportion of fat being burnt, you need to get to where you’re feeling out of breath but can still talk sentences for at least 20 minutes for this to take effect. Incorporate some more vigorous activity (e.g. in a separate session or interval training), to burn more fat sooner and have more post exercise burn. The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn when active or not. Being moderately active for at least 10 minutes at a time, aiming to reach 150 minutes a week, and generally trying to sit less will also help reduce risks of Type II diabetes, heart disease, stroke and some cancers .

POWER

OF POSITIVE THINKING

Positive thinking is not accepted by everyone. Some, consider it as nonsense, and mock people who follow it, but there is a growing number of people, who believe in its effectiveness to help with their everyday lives. If you are feeling flat, fed up and frustrated, why not give it a go, what have you got to lose?

FIVE KEY RULES TO REMEMBER

7. DON’T OVERDO IT

1 2 3 4 5 Overthinking Ruins Happiness

Positive thoughts create a better life

Read more from BirdSol at www. yourlocalcrowd.co.uk/health

We all want to see results quickly but in reality, it is going to take time if you want to lose weight healthily and be more likely to maintain it. Fad diets generally leave you hungry and don’t help you to learn about what you are eating, change your habits or get more active. Eating less than your minimum calories to function can leave you feeling fatigued and in the long run fad diets can have damaging effects . Skipping meals such as breakfast long term has been linked to hardening of the arteries . Eating a healthy amount regularly throughout the day will keep your energy levels up and make sure your body has the nutrients it needs. Similarly, do not overdo the exercise. Overdoing it will lead to fatigue and put you at a higher risk of injury – short and long term. Start slow and build yourself up. If you would like further advice, a personalised program, nutrition assessment and/or personal training sessions then please get in touch with me@exerciseyoufreedom.com, call 07876 75 46 45 or visit www.exerciseyourfreedom. com for more information. CLEAN LIVING There are few rites of spring more satisfying that the annual spring clean, throw open the doors and windows, and get down to a good spring clean Your basic supplies, which can be found in most supermarkets: • Distilled white vinegar • Baking soda • Olive Oil • Borax (sold with the washing powders) • Microfiber cloths • Newspaper Other supplies found in Health food stores • Liquid Castile soap • Essential Oils TIP: Have a look at investing in a steam cleaner, reducing the need for any cleaning products and chemicals, with the heat of the steam killing bacteria. Designed to be used in most household areas such as the bathroom, floors and ovens etc.

sam@yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

All too often the chemicals found in conventional cleaning products are harsh and can be more dangerous than the dirt you are trying to clean away. Here we list the natural alternatives, to help leave your home smelling fresh and squeaky clean. BAKING SODA (Bicarbonate of Soda) Suprisingly good at breaking down grease. Use with vinegar or lemon juice to make a more abrasive product. Stains: Sprinkle dry on carpets to help lift out stubburn stains. Or use on a damp sponge to smear on stains on work surfaces. Test in a small area first. Grease & grime: Mix with a little water to obliterate grease and grime. Smells: It will neutralize most strong odours and when sprinkled onto carpets before vacuuming will freshen them from pet smells. Unblock drains: Drop some down the plughole then pour over vinegar to unblock a drain. LEMON JUICE Scum: Mix with vinegar to make a paste to remove those stubborn stains, its also a good bleaching agent. Furniture Polish: Mix one cup of olive oil with half a cup of lemon juice and pour into a spray bottle. The lemon will cut through grease and the olive oil will leave a nice shine, remember to buff with a dry cloth though. Test in a small area first. Deodoriser: Good for removing smells

and odours, from your microwave for example. Simply add a few slices of lemon into a bowl of water and microwave on high power for a couple of minutes. ESSENTAIL OILS Fed up of the taste of air fresheners ,use essential oils instead. Lavender to relax, perhaps use in the bedroom, peppermint may help you stay alert, a good one for the car and clove and citrus fruit for the rest of the house. Air freshener: Place a few drop onto a cotton ball and hide it in a room, out of children’s reach of course. Antibacterial Spray: Using a few drops of lavender, a couple of drops of tea tree and some eucalyptus oil in the winter or citronella in the summer, to deter flies. OLIVE OIL & VINEGAR Olive oil is particularly good at removing finger marks from stainless steel surfaces Vinegar is an excellent all-purpose cleaner and deodoriser, particularly white wine vinegar • Bathroom and kitchen, use 50/50 mixed with water in a squirty bottle. • Use as a de-scaler, soak cloths in vinegar and wrap them around taps, cover with a plastic bag and secure with an elastic band and return a few hours later to find gleaming taps. • Clean your windows with vinegar and newspaper for brilliant results •Remove mold and mildew, by wiping with neat vinegar.

FRESH & FINE

Thank you, dry January you’ve been great, but now it’s time to excite our taste buds without breaking the bank and try some new and exciting wines in 2018. Richie Hammond

I’m going to start with suggesting a sparkling white I had over Christmas which really impressed me. Emiliana Spearling Organic Brut wine from the Casablanca Valley, Chile is excellent. 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir with three months on its lees, it really over-delivers on quality, with lush ripe fruit, perfectly counterbalanced with some tight lemony acidity. Forget a cheapy champagne or expensive Prosecco this is the fizz to drink at around the 15 pound price mark. It’s

@ylcrowd

lovely and refreshing, and full of tropical fruit flavours. You ll notice there is nothing on the wine label about its ingredients? Conventional wines can contain up to 50 additives (sulphites, allergens, sugars, preservatives, colourants & flavourings). That’s why many people, including well-known chefs and nutritionists, are switching to organic and natural wines with the added advantage of rarely having a hangover. Emiliana, which is Chile’s biggest organic wine producer, with vineyards in Casablanca, Maipo and Rapel (Cachapoal and Colchagua) Valleys, is owned by the country’s biggest producer, Next on the list we pop over the South Atlantic to New Zealand for one of their superb sauvignon blancs. But as we said we are not going to break the bank as we don’t have to with the wonderful Sileni Cellar Selection Sauvignon Blanc. While the Cloudy bays are up in the twenty pound plus price range this little beauty comes in at under ten pounds but sacrifices nothing on taste. In 1997, winemaker Grant Edmonds established Sileni as a producer, committed to crafting world-class fine wines. Sileni Estates is a major vineyard and winery development in Hawke’s Bay, which is New Zealand’s oldest established vineyard area. Since the first vintage in 1998 the wines have won world wide acclaim. The vineyards and winery are based near Hastings, Hawke’s Bay, on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. This Sauvignon blanc has exhuberant aromas of elderflower, herbs, ripe melon, gooseberry and passion fruit. Appealing, classically styled wine with a crisp finish. Next time we are going to Italy in the summer where we will be tasting their wonderful red wines. I’ll see you then Richie Hammond www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk | 31

Health & Safety

SPRINKLERS Wales will become the first country in the world where sprinklers will be compulsory in all new homes. Richie Hammond discusses what this means for us in Wales. r.j.hammond@btinternet.com

This was the announcement from the Welsh Government in February 2011 and although few people are aware the law was passed unanimously by Welsh assembly members after being proposed by Ann Jones and came into effect in April 2014. So, what does this mean for us in Wales? It means that the law applies to newly built houses and blocks of flats, as well as care homes and university halls of residence. It means that Wales took the lead in the UK where others hesitated and it means that the risk of a fire remaining undetected and escalating into fully developed incidents have been reduced significantly ensuring our safety in new buildings. Sprinklers have been in existence since 1885 and up until relatively recent times, they have been used primarily as a ‘property protection’ tool rather than for ‘life safety’. But the development of ‘fast responding’ sprinkler heads in the 1980s has now enabled sprinklers to be used for life safety application. So how does a sprinkler work? Sprinklers aren’t triggered by smoke, and they don’t all go off at once. Fire sprinkler systems are actually

34 | www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

@ylcrowd

heat activated, one sprinkler head at a time, and most fires usually require only one or two sprinklers to be extinguished. You’ve probably seen a number of movies where a small amount of smoke triggers all of the sprinklers in a building, soaking everyone and everything inside but that doesn’t happen. The sprinkler heads are connected to a network of pipes containing pressurised water If fire breaks out, the air temperature above the fire rises and when the temperature of the air gets high enough the sprinkler activates. They spray water forcefully over the flames, aiming to extinguishing and controlling the heat and limiting the development of toxic smoke until the fire Service arrives. Next time we are going to explore an escape plan for your home and place of work whether you have sprinklers fitted or not. For free Fire Safety advice contact our excellent Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service on 0370 60 60 699 and for help with your Fire Risk Assessments and training contact me r.j.hammond@btinternet.com Stay safe.
