BEWARE OF BOGUS AND COLD CALLERS Bogus callers prey on the most vulnerable people in our communities attempting to con them out of vast amounts of money for unnecessary and overpriced work.
Sometimes they pretend to be from reputable companies and sometimes they resort to distraction tactics. Cold callers will phone or knock your door unannounced and try to sell you a product or service. Many are genuine but some can be scams. Police in Dyfed-Powys are warning homeowners and relatives of elderly and vulnerable people to be aware that bogus and cold callers are out there and to advise of some simple steps people can take to protect themselves. PS Alison Rees of Dyfed Powys Police, said: “Unfortunately not everyone who knocks unannounced at your door has a genuine reason for being there. Bogus callers are criminals and we encourage residents to beware and know what to do if they do receive a visit from a bogus caller with making sure you ask for ID a priority, along with fitting and using a door chain. If in doubt, keep them out.” Top tips on how to beat the bogus or cold caller: • Consider fitting a chain on the door – and always use it. Remember to keep the door chain on until you are sure your caller is genuine. • Do not let anyone into your home that you do not know or until you are completely satisfied that they are who they say they are. • Make sure the caller is genuine. Ask to see identification. If in doubt, telephone the company the caller says they work for. Don’t use a number on their card but look it up in the phone book. • Don’t let the caller stop you doing these things by saying he or she is in a hurry. A genuine caller won’t mind waiting outside with the door closed while you ring. • If you are blind, partially sighted,or have difficulty moving about, you can arrange to have your meters read at an agreed time by a named person. When they call, the meter reader will give their name or an agreed password. If you are worried
ring the police. • Ask a neighbour or friend to visit while the caller is there • Never leave a key hidden outside the home (e.g. under a doormat) • If you are selling your home, don’t show people around on your own. Ask your estate agent to send a representative with anyone who wants to view your house. Call 101 to report a suspected bogus caller or rogue trader. Call 999 if they become aggressive or to report a distraction burglary. For more advice on protecting yourself and your home from bogus callers visit www.dyfed-powys.police.uk or call 101.

INTERVIEW
A COURAGEOUS AND EXTRAORDINARY JOB The coast is one of the things that makes Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire so special, but the sea deserves our respect. Our heroic lifeboat crews know this more than most, and we asked Louise Francis, part of the team at Cardigan lifeboat station, about life with the RNLI. How did you become involved with the RNLI? I signed up 6 years ago. I went along to an open day and signed up on the spot. I’m crew, but I can helm too, and drive the tractor and Landrover to launch and recover the lifeboats. Overlapping skills mean the boats can always be operational. The RNLI rescues, on average, 22 people a day – at Cardigan we launch 45-50 times each year. What about training? There’s a week of intensive training at RNLI College in Poole, and then ongoing training so we’re always up to date. What happens on a ‘shout’? We carry pagers 24/7. The ‘shouts’ can come at any time – I’ve left a trolley of shopping in the supermarket before now. We’re not ‘blue lighted’, but we’ll usually be in the sea within 8 minutes. We clean down and prepare the boats ready for the next job at the end of each shout. How far round the coast do you cover? Tresaith to Newport, and out to sea 8-10 miles. We have an offshore Atlantic 85 and a smaller D class inshore boat. We work with other local stations, and have shore support from the coastguard. The beach lifeguards help us by trying to keep our route to the sea clear. Is there a typical call out? No! We never know what we’re going to when the pager goes off: accidents at sea, broken down boats, cliff rescues, missing swimmers or canoeists. We once rescued a family of 5 whose boat had capsized on Cardigan bar, and one day we had 3 shouts one after the other. We travel up river too,
and once rescued a horse stranded at Cilgerran. How have the recent Coastguard station closures affected Cardigan? It’s unsettling. Swansea has been closed so we now use Milford Haven. But if Milford is busy (which they often are) then the call can be sent anywhere - Holyhead or HQ Southampton which means it takes longer to be paged and extended launch times as a result. Are you sometimes frustrated by the situations people find themselves in? We’re there to rescue people, not to pass judgment, and straight after a rescue isn’t the time to be giving people a lecture. It’s frustrating to see people going out without buoyancy aids or lifejackets, and not taking a radio or mobile phone with them – not respecting the sea. Why do you do it? It’s really exciting. The adrenaline rush when the pager goes off is intense – and of course you’re saving lives. The team is fantastic – everyone’s contribution is vital - those of us who go out, shore crew, fundraisers - and we work together really well. How can people get more involved? The RNLI runs entirely on donations from the public, so fundraising is really important. And of course, anyone can volunteer to join the team at any time – we have training sessions on Wednesday evenings (6-8.30) and Sunday mornings, if people would like to come along and find out more.

INTERVIEW
LOOP PEDAL WHIZZ KID
Using a loop pedal, accomplished local solo artist, Rye Milligan creates arrangements of his catchy music using just his voice, guitar and Ipad. We catch up with him after a bouncing performance The Cellar Bar in Cardigan Give us a little background and how you started out and how you’ve established yourself as an artist? Originally my mum bought the Loop Pedal I use for her use, as she’s a musician too, but after it not doing what she wanted I managed to get hold of it and my music act kinda took off from there. I wouldn’t say I’m yet established as an artist. I’m still working on that one haha! 2. How would you describe your music and what artist would you compare yourself with? That’s always a hard question, but I guess my music is.. er, up-beat pop with an influence of hip hop, maybe.? I couldn’t pick just one artist to compare myself with because I have a lot of influences, but I do regularly get likened to Ed Sheeran for better or worse – you chose haha 3. What’s your most memorable performance and why? My most memorable performance has to be my album launch show. It was very humbling and rewarding having such a good turnout and of such friendly faces too! 4. What is the toughest part about performing? I really enjoy the actual performing of a gig, so not much springs to mind there, but the intense rehearsing for the gig is very hard and sometimes not very enjoyable. 5. Do you suffer from stage fright? Luckily I don’t suffer from stage fright no, but I do always get the pesky pre show nerves. 6. What one prop or part of your costume couldn’t you live without and why? I guess the one thing I couldn’t live without, regarding my performances, would be my loop pedal. I guess it could be referred to as a prop, ha! But without that little gem box I wouldn’t be able to do what I do really. 7. How often do you rehearse/practice? When I have a gig on the horizon I try and practice solidly for a week or two before it. Not as intensely as I just made out there, but yeah, I think it’s good to be as prepared as possible.
8. How do you promote yourself? I use Facebook mostly to promote my music, gathering ‘likes’ after each gig which takes a lot of time hammering my name home to people. ‘Rye like the Bread’ is a classic to get people to remember my name. Also of course Milligan like ‘Spike’. But I also use other social media sites like Twitter, YouTube and Insta. 9. What advice would you give to anyone else who is thinking of forming a band or group? My advice to anyone thinking of starting a band, or even doing a solo thing like me, would be to just throw yourself into it with intention! Each new ‘like’ on Facebook or positive piece of feedback you get will just make you more addicted to pushing it further. Go for it! 10. Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? ‘Oh well in 5 years’ time we could be walking round a zoo with the sun shining down over me and you’ 11. Do you have a fan club? At the moment I think what I have are a lot of great friends that are very supportive towards my music. But one day I would love to have a fan club. I’ll work on that one too. 12. Sum up in one sentence what it’s like to live and perform in Wales? Wales is the perfect starting point to begin performing in because of its cozy venues and friendly, supportive crowds. TRIED & TESTED
THE CELLAR BAR
by Sam Jones A great intimate atmosphere to hear & see live performances, with an eclectic variety of local music, poetry performances and open mic nights. Cardigan Castle recently re-opened its doors to the public after undergoing major changes, changing the face of Cardigan; throughout these changes, and for the many years that I’ve been visiting the town that I have now chosen to make home, what remains is the wonderful mix of music and live performances held at The Cellar Bar, which is situated beneath the Castle Café, opposite the Castle itself. I’ve been visiting Cardigan since a young child, during our summer holidays, and as I grew older and travelled here independently, I always ensured I had at least one trip to The Cellar Bar during my stay. Anyone who knows Cardigan, appreciates that the town and High Street has many pubs, but what makes the Cellar Bar unique is that it offers a wide variety of acts and performances, from open mic nights, where new bands can find their feet, to poetry readings, to the more established bands, which pull in the larger crowds. But it always seemed to be the place to go to escape the more raucous behavior of Cardigans youth and to enjoy some quality entertainment. Another thing I personally like about the Cellar Bar, is it’s size; it’s cosy, intimate, comfortable, warm and welcoming. Perfect for that
first nail biting performance, new song or story, opening the door of opportunity to many local bands, allowing them to perform in front of a small crowd in intimate and comfortable surroundings. That, to me, is what makes this place so special. It can hold a large crowd comfortably, allowing the music to bounce around the room, creating that buzzing electric atmosphere needed at a lively performance, or as is more often the case, can hold a small intimate crowd of music loving people and friends to enjoy an evening of entertainment. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing several local bands perform with confidence here. Bands such as Memphis Belle, Elvis Desley and, more recently, a fantastic young artist Rye Milligan, just 18 years of age, who performed with such confidence. He had the room literally jumping, mixing his music and building up loops on his iPad, whilst sampling new songs for his enthusiastic audience. Owner Stephen Greenleigh and his team actively and tirelessly promote the different events over social media and on the chalkboard displayed outside the café. If you’ve not visited the Cellar Bar, please do. You can check what’s on by visiting their website or Facebook page, updated daily. Or simply visit the Castle Café for a coffee where you can find updates displayed on the large screen that sits above the entrance to the Cellar Bar. 25/26 Quay Street, Cardigan, Ceredigion

by Ben Jones, Celtic Sustainables
WOOD A SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MATERIAL We’ve been building houses out of wood as far back into history as we can delve. Some of the oldest timber houses in Europe have been found in Scotland and England, and date back five or six thousand years to the Neolithic period.
Ever since then, we have continued to make use of this material, harvesting it from where it grows all around us, and benefitting from its infinite renewability. Today, we are beginning to really understand the benefits of building with wood, not only to us and the structures we build, but to the planet which supplies us with the material in the first place. Wood is currently the only natural and renewable product used in mainstream construction. In the UK, over 90% of the wood we use is sourced from Europe’s forests, which are growing in size by 661,000 hectares every year thanks to rigorous replanting. Whilst sourcing wood from a nearby source is a good way to ensure its sustainability, we are also able to make certain that our timber is truly renewable by picking wood approved by the schemes such as FSC, PEFC, SFI, or CSA. Properly managed forests can actually benefit the planet by reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. This happens thanks to the ability of trees to soak up more carbon in their lifetime than is released during their production into construction materials. Thanks to this attribute, each tonne of timber used instead of other building materials such as steel, brick, or concrete, saves an equal amount of carbon dioxide from being put out into the atmosphere. Wood is also very long-lasting. Properly maintained timber structures have lasted hundreds of years. Heavily used wooden structures such as windows and floors have lasted in very good repair since the Georgian and Victorian periods where they have been well looked-after, adding to the environmental benefits of the material. We’re now seeing a return to the use of more natural products to build and care for our homes. Wood has never really gone away, but now we can appreciate it for its full capabilities. Where we use wood, to be sure that it will last as long as it can do, we need to use the best products to treat it. Osmo wood treatments have been
based on purified and refined natural resources over the past 40 years. The treatments are made of natural oils including sunflower, soya, linseed, and thistle, and waxes including carnauba and candelilla. The coloured finishes are made using pigments from natural ores, and many products contain no solvents (VOCs) whilst others are still being worked on in an effort to continually improve Osmo’s environmental credentials. In the past, we have tended to use either oil-based finishes or varnishes and lacquers. The problem with these is that they either protect the wood from the inside or from the outside, but never both. Osmo’s unique oil/wax finishing system makes sure the wood is completely protected whilst also being microporous to prevent cracking, flaking, peeling, and blistering. The Osmo system is also easy to look after and can be partially renovated without sanding down the whole of the treated surface. Osmo products are available to pick up from the Celtic Sustainables shop at Unit 9 Parc Teifi, Cardigan, SA43 1EW, or to order online at www.celticsustainables.co.uk, or by phone on 01239 623 506

WALES COAST PATH GUIDE
by Sam Jones
www.bit.ly/ylcCoastPathGuide
DISCOVER OUR COASTAL PLAYGROUND Whether you are looking for a family day out, some heritage and culture, coastal adrenalin activities or to simply to put your feet upon one of our gorgeous beaches, our coastline has something for everyone. Here in association with the Wales Coast Path, illustrated by images from local photographers we’ve put together a guide of coastal walks for you to enjoy, highlighting our two favourites. So dig out those walking boots and get out for a blast of fresh air. The Ceredigion section of the Wales Coast Path can be tackled in up to seven sections – representing seven days walking. Each section ends in a town or village where you can find accommodation and transport. The route sections below are described in order from south to north. Our highlighted walk and personal favourite is Aberporth to 1 Llangrannog Cardigan to Aberporth Running through farmland to the north of the River Teifi before following a roadside path along the side of the estuary to Gwbert. Heading inland for a while, before returning to the coast for some fantastic views on the approach to Mwnt. The next stretch runs along the clifftops overlooking some quiet coves and caves. All along this route is a great place to spot dolphins, seals and porpoises. Passing Cwm Gwrddon - a glacial meltwater channel, the path then skirts around the Ministry of Defence base before descending into the picturesque village of Aberporth. Distance: 11.7 miles (19.1km) Difficulty: easy/moderate Map1: http://bit.ly/ylcCardigan2Mwnt. Map2: http://bit.ly/ylcMwnt2Aberporth 2

Aberporth to Llangrannog Highlighted Ceredigion Walk The first half mile is tarmac & probably the easiest section of the Ceredigion Coastal path, suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. Characterised by high cliffs and secluded beaches, much of this section is designated Heritage Coast. On the firt strecth of this walk, pass renovated railway carriages, beautiful-
ly situated overlooking the sea, converted into holiday accommodation. A spectacular sight on this stretch of coastal path, is the waterfall at Tresaith, with the River Saith cascades over the cliffs into the sea and is a popular feature of the village. A good halfway point to break up your walk is the Ship Inn. Nestled above the beach of Tresiath, offering great food & views from the terrace. Popular with both locals and the visiting tourist, it’s the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat and rest the legs after the steep decent into the village. From Tresaith it becomes a little more challenging, between Penbryn and Llangrannog, there are 2 steep climbs and decents at Traeth Bach, and up to the ramparts of an iron age fort of Castell-bach, before descending into the village of Llangrannog. Excellent uninterrupted views can be found on this stretch of coastal path with the striking profile of Ynys Lochtyn. Here bottled-nosed dolphins, popular residents of Cardigan Bay, can be seen on most days during the summer. Your walk will end in one of Cardigan Bay’s prettiest small villages, Llangrannog, a tranquil, safe, seaside holiday village. Relax in one of it’s pubs, Pentre Arms and The Ship or cafes Patio Cafe and The Beach Hut, or simply grab an ice cream at and take a well earned break on its sandy beach or explore it’s cave. According to legend, the distinctive rock on Llangrannog beach, known as Carreg Bica (Devil’s Tooth) comes from the Devil himself who, apparently, in a furious rage toothache, in anger ripped it out promptly ripped it out, whereupon, of all places, it happened to land … in Llangrannog! Llangrannog to New Quay Some would say the most spectacular part of the Ceredigion Coast Path, this section is Heritage Coast and includes the iconic Ynys Lochtyn, magnificent folded rock formations of Cwmtydu and Cwm Soden. Cwm yr Eglwys to Pwllgwaelod Highlighted Pembrokeshire Walk 10 This is a walk I take regularly to blow away the Sunday morning cobwebs and is a favourite of mine. At 142 metres or 465 feet above sea level, the walk over Dinas Head will certainly get the heart pumping and can be hard going in places but the views are worth the effort. It’s circular walk, not too long and has a great pub & restaurant at Pwllgwaelod, The Old Sailors, 11 for that rewarding pint of prawns and some real ale. This pub was apparently visited by Dylan Thomas at least once or twice! A wide, flat footpath suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs links the two coves, I’ve walked with members of my family who have all enjoyed the day out with some of us taking the more challenging path over Dinas head, with others members of the party taking the flat footpath, for us to meet at the Old Sailors at Pwllgwaelod for a bite to eat. Cwm yr Eglwys has plenty of rock pools to explore and is a lovely sheltered beach. I did my first offshore scuba-dive here as a child with my father, so it holds many fond memories. The beach at Pwllgwaelod is small sheltered
and sandy, great for the little members of our group. Distance: Difficulty: easy/moderate/difficult Map: http://bit.ly/ylcpembsmaps (map 63-68) 13
Whitesands to Solva Head out from the golden sands of Whitesands Bay, passing close to St Davids, Britians smallest city, ending in the pretty harbour village of Solva. Try a bit of Porpoise spotting, often seen in the waters between the mainland and Ramsey Island. It’s a long stretch of the coastal path so I’d recommend, once arriving in Solva, taking a well earned break on the harbourside or in the Harbour Inn set within the Harbour itself. At low tide you can take a lovely walk out over the beach to the harbour mouth, great for exploring the rock pools. Distance: 21km / 13miles Difficulty: moderate/difficult Map: http://bit.ly/ylcpembsmaps (map 68 &69) Martins Haven to Morloes With wonderful views across Jack Sound to Skomer Island, this is a dramatic stretch of Welsh coastline. A great place for wildlife watching, with it being a great place to catch sight of gannets and porpoise, particalarly in September and October. A short walk so add on 14 a small extension and walk to the beautiful Marloes Beach. Distance: 3.5km/2miles Difficulty: easy/moderate/difficult 15 Map: http://bit.ly/ylcpembsmaps (map 72 &73)
Broad Haven South to Skrinkle Haven It was a tough decision not to include this as my highlighted walk. An absolutely stunning stretch of coastline and one which I return to frequently. Containing the National Trust’s Barafundle beach, which for me, definately holds the WOW factor and voted one of the top 10 beaches in the world and the Lily Ponds at Bosherton. PROFILE
CROESO CARE We find out more about Croeso Care, founded in 2007 by 2 friends, Heather Burt and Fiona Morris, and now providing a variety of invaluable care services across Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.
Caring for our elderly relatives is a huge issue today, with concerns about the cost of care, and so much publicity in the media about the poor treatment some old people have received at the hands of unscrupulous carers in other parts of the country, it’s incredibly reassuring to talk to Heather and Fiona and learn about the professionalism and thought that they put into the care services offered by Croeso Care. Heather and Fiona both have strong backgrounds in all types of care, having worked in the industry throughout their careers. Croeso Care is built on a belief that care should be tailored to allow individuals to remain living in their own homes as long as possible, maintaining their dignity, and the range of services the business offers reflects this. From community care packages involving home visits throughout the day to assist with meal preparation, bathing and dressing and medication, through to respite care, in which a member of Croeso Care can move in and provide care while the usual carer (often a family member) takes a break, the business can tailor a package to suit individual needs, including 24hr care, night care at various levels and day care where, unlike the community care package, a carer can be present in the home for blocks of up to 12 hours at a time. Given that the business now covers such a wide area,
by Sally Sellwood it’s clear that the staff is crucial to the delivery of such quality care services. Heather & Fiona are proud of the investment they make in their staff, providing top training and feedback – this has been made even more streamlined with the construction of new offices with state of the art facilities for training and updates so that the team are always up to date with policies, procedures and changes in the business and in the industry. All 130+ members of staff have been inducted through the ‘Care Council of Wales Induction Programme’ and the ‘All-Wales Moving and Handling Passport Programme’. Invaluable ongoing training is provided through In-House Trainers and by external professionals where necessary. Staff are also encouraged to participate in further industry qualifications (such as NVQ’s) through partnering with Pembrokeshire College. Regulated by and registered with the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales, the business initially provided services only in Ceredigion. However, in 2008, they were asked to register with Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire, and today service all 3 counties, with new offices recently opening in Pembroke Dock. So what is the secret of their success? It’s clear that Heather and Fiona are motivated by a firm belief that older members of the population should be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve. They see the key to this as helping people remain living in their own homes for as long as possible, and firmly believe that this choice is often taken away unnecessarily when other options are available. Another factor must be their recognition of the area they work in. For more information, or to contact Croeso Care visit www.croesocare.co.uk or call 01239 712802
“We are very aware of both the geography of the areas we cover, and the proud culture of those who call this place home. TRIED & TESTED by Sam Jones The Old Sailors, an absolute hidden gem, one which I’ve visited many times over the years both as a tourist and now more frequently as a local resident. Set in a beautiful location, The Old Sailors restaurant stands behind the beach of Pwllgwaelod. A rustic pub/ restaurant dating from 1593, formally known as the Sailors Safety named for the light it once kept burning as a guide to ships, now well known for it’s fine selection of fresh seafood, a must for seafood lovers. With its sheltered bay and great beer garden, it’s also the perfect place to pit stop on your coastal walk as it’s conveniently situated on the Wales Coast Path in Pembrokeshire. On our recent visit, we chose to go for the sunset. Warmly greeted and sat overlooking the beach we settled down to study the specials and evening menu, over a crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc. To start I chose the Moules Marinere, followed by pan-fried sea bass with vierge sauce. My companion went for a starter of dressed crab followed by a mighty portion of fish and chips. The Moules, little orange jewels were presented, deliciously fat, and smothered in a rich creamy garlic sauce, served with a couple of slices of garlic bread. Perfect! The crab, lovingly devoured, was neatly packed into a ramekin, well
THE OLD SAILORS seasoned and very tasty. Served simply with a neat side salad and some bread. Onto the main event, Pan Fried Sea Bass. Beautifully filleted, served with a crispy skin & presented simply with a tomato, shallot, caper and olive oil, vierge sauce, I was delighted with my choice. Not a bone in sight, it was moist and tender and partnered very well with the light dressing. My companion was served a large and meaty haddock with mashed peas and tartare sauce. Chunks of fresh white meat sat beneath the lovely crisp batter, this particular fish would have made any fisherman proud…he was a beast and very tasty! Accompanying the two mains were a side of salad and a bowl of chips. By now the restaurant was in full swing with both the staff and owners proudly presenting beautiful dishes caught that very morning. Accompanied by some light chatter, I got the impression it was a satisfying and rewarding job to be doing in such a lovely setting. If you get the opportunity, I’d definitely recommend a visit to the Old Sailors, be it for lunch or dinner. I may even see you there! The Old Sailors Pwllgwaelod, Near Dinas 01348 811491

SOCIAL MEDIA
by Sally Sellwood Teifi Social
FIND YOUR VOICE ONLINE One of the most common things people say to me when discussing social media for their business – and usually just after they’ve told me that “Well, everyone says I should be on Facebook…” - is “I wouldn’t know what to say”. If this applies to you, here are some pointers to get you started.
Social media is a way of engaging with people – customers, potential customers, suppliers, competitors even. It is a ‘channel’ that allows you to communicate your business and what it stands for in a more holistic way. What you say, the ‘content’ – is as important as the ‘how you say it’ – in the same way that you would use a printed magazine to advertise in order to reach a particular audience, the design of your advert is as important as the publication it appears in. It’s not enough to ‘be on social media’ – what you say there matters too. Whichever social media platforms you are using, the golden rule is “Don’t say anything you wouldn’t say in person”. Sure, you can take the impersonal edge social media allows you – that fact that you’re not actually making eye contact with anyone – to be perhaps a little
Think about your strategy on social media before you start posting
bolder than you might be face to face, but it’s crucial that you are honest, and respectful. This is particularly important as a business – if you’ve made claims on social media that can’t be substantiated, someone will call you out – in public. And if you do have a gripe with a particular business – a competitor, perhaps or a supplier who has let you down, deal with it offline. Think about your strategy on social media before you start posting. If you think about what you want social media to do for you, why you are going to invest time developing a Facebook page or a business account. Ultimately, you want sales, but think about which aspect of that social media will help with: giving your business more visibility, fostering brand loyalty or reaching new customers, for example. Spend time seeing what other businesses are saying on social media too. See what you like and what you don’t like and consider how different approaches can work for your business As you have gone through this process, you’ll probably already have had some ideas about the nitty gritty of what to post. Here are some more ideas: • Advice: be helpful; this is also a great way to get involved in conversations on social media, where people often g o if they have a problem. You’ll set yourself up as an expert in public. • Humour: everyone likes a laugh. You don’t need to be cranking out the jokes every 5 minutes, but relating a funny story, telling a joke, or just offering a lighter perspective every now and then will be appreciated • Share what’s on in your area or industry – even if it doesn’t relate directly to you • Video and photos are good And remember what works for one channel may not work quite so well on another, so you may need to adapt accordingly, and don’t go for the hard sell: social media is more subtle than that. Finding your voice online doesn’t always come easily. Your Local Crowd, in partnership with TeifiSocial can offer assistance with your social media marketing strategy and content creation, and can actively promote your business online, even if you don’t use social media. GETTING TO GRIPS WITH YOUR VAT Heard the one about the businessman who thought ‘VAT’ stood for ‘Vodka and Tonic’? It’s a very old joke in accountancy circles. VAT (Value Added Tax), however, is not something that any business should take lightly. Here, then, are a few words of explanation about VAT. You can only charge VAT if your business is registered for VAT. VAT is charged on things like: • business sales - eg when you sell goods and services • hiring or loaning goods to someone • selling business assets • commission • items sold to staff - eg canteen meals • business goods used for personal reasons • ‘non-sales’ like bartering, part-exchange and gifts These are known as ‘taxable supplies’. There are different rules for imports and exports and charities. VAT-registered businesses: • must charge VAT on their goods or services • may reclaim any VAT they’ve paid on business-related goods or services If you’re a VAT-registered business you must report to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) the amount of VAT you’ve charged and the amount of VAT you’ve paid. This is done through your VAT Return which is usually completed online every three months. You may want to appoint an agent to deal with HMRC on your behalf. You must account for VAT on the full value of what you sell. There are three different rates of VAT and you must make sure you charge the right amount. It is sound advice to get a list of reduced or zero-rated goods and services. Standard rate: Most goods and services are standard rate. You should charge this rate unless the goods or services are classed as reduced or zero-rated. Reduced rate: When to charge this rate can depend on the item being provided, but also the circumstance of the sale. For example: children’s car seats and domestic fuel or power are always charged at 5%; mobility aids for older people are only charged at 5% if they’re for someone over 60 and the goods are installed in their home Zero rate: Zero-rated means that the goods are still VAT-taxable, but the rate of VAT you must charge your customers is 0%. Examples of zero-rated goods include: books and newspapers; children’s clothes and shoes; motorcycle helmets. You still have to record zero-rated transactions in your VAT accounts and report them on your
VAT Return. Rates can change and you must apply any changes to the rates from the date they change. You need to know the right VAT rate so you can charge it correctly and reclaim it on your purchases. If a transaction is a standard, reduced or zero-rated taxable supply, you must: • charge the right rate of VAT • work out the VAT if a single price is shown that includes or excludes VAT • show the VAT information on your invoice • show the transaction in your VAT account - a summary of your VAT • show the amount on your VAT Return You may be able to reclaim the VAT on purchases that relate to these sales. You can’t claim back all of the amount you’ve paid if you pay the wrong amount of VAT on a purchase. You’ll need to make a calculation when charging VAT on goods or services, or when working out the amount of VAT you can claim back on items which were sold inclusive of VAT. As a VAT-registered business, you can sell certain goods and services to charities at the zero or reduced rate of VAT. It’s your responsibility to check the charity is eligible, and to apply the correct rate. Obviously, this is not a definitive guide to VAT. You can find out more on the Government website – https://www.gov.uk/browse/business Here at Clay Shaw Butler, we have an experienced team to advise you on your VAT problems. ROASTED FENNEL & PRAWN PASTA Delicious hot or cold, fennel is a relatively unknown vegetable/salad, with a aniseed flavour that pairs well with fish. All the lovely flavours of summer, even better if you fancy having a go at making your own pasta….. Serves 2 • 150g tagliatelle • 1 bulb roasted fennel – see above, chopped up into bite size pieces • clove garlic, finely chopped • knob of butter • 200g fresh prawns • ½ lemon, juiced • small handful chopped parsley • small handful fennel tops, chopped finely • salt Pop pasta onto cook in large pan boiling, salted water. When there is only a couple of minutes of the pasta cooking time pop the garlic into a large frying pan with a knob of butter, cook for 30 seconds and add the prawns, cook for a minute each side until done, add fennel and warm through. Drain pasta and add to frying pan, mix through with the prawns and fennel, season and serve into bowls, sprinkle with parsley and fennel tops and a good squeeze of lemon. by Jennifer Goss of Our Two Acres Catering enquiries to gossifer@hotmail.com
