We all love a wedding and there is nothing more delightful than creating those special memories with close friends & family. After recently attending an extremely lavish and meticulously planned wedding, I discovered that the wedding marketplace is huge, with an abundance of local businesses and services all catering for one of the biggest days of your life… your wedding here in Wales. It seems that it’s no longer widely accepted to have a simple church wedding, with a sit down ‘do’ at the local village hall followed by some dancing to the local DJ. Things have certainly moved on… So inside this issue you’ll find various articles & guides ready to help you get the most out of your day, useful tips and tricks to help your day run smoothly, along with many local wedding related businesses, all found here on your own doorstep. At Your Local Crowd we strive to promote local and encourage our readers to support local by using the services found here in West Wales. If you find a useful business featured, please don’t forget to mention Your Local Crowd when making your enquiry. On behalf of the team at Your Local Crowd we hope you enjoy this Summer Edition and don’t forget to enter our Summer competition on Page 7. I’d love to hear from you to discover your business & events or just to hear your views on Your Local Crowd. Email the team on info@yourlocalcrowd.co.uk. or get in touch via Facebook or Twitter. Don’t forget to check out our website where you will find our magazine archives, articles & interviews of local interest, recipes, what’s on guides and not forgetting, our directory of local businesses, but most importantly LOVE, SHOP & SUPPORT LOCAL! 7 - COMPETITION Win a laptop!

What’s so special about a wedding in West Wales? West Wales – spectacular scenery, charming venues and utterly amazing food: why wouldn’t you want to get married here?
I
want to get married again. Don’t get me wrong – I’m very happy with my husband – I just want to get married again: here in West Wales. Our wedding was wonderful

- despite the dress stress, the arguments with my mum about the menu (never mention ‘egg mayonnaise’ to me), and the DJ’s attempts to get us to line dance at the reception - but as I travel around this corner of Wales that we now call home, I find myself thinking: “Wow! Wouldn’t it have been amazing to get married here? Or here? Or over there…” Of course, getting married is about much more than a wedding day. On the other hand, kicking off married life in style, surrounded by beauty, love and laughter sets things on the right track and many of the elements of a great wedding day are right here on our doorstep in West Wales. The perfect backdrop for your wedding day A stunning backdrop, scenery to take your breath away: it’s not just about having amazing wedding photos (although that’s always a bonus). However you choose to celebrate your union, beautiful

West Wales offers a venue for every couple and occasion – just take your pick surroundings set a mood, reflect your values and become an integral part of the day. For those who love the sea, the salty air of Mwnt and Penbryn, complete with picture perfect white chapels are hard to beat for a coastal union – make your vows, then go for a paddle: what could be better? From stunning sea views to the rolling landscape of the Preseli mountains, to hidden woodlands there are many impressive locations for your wedding in West Wales. A venue for every couple and occasion West Wales offers a venue for just about every taste conceivable,
whether a lavish celebration, intimate elegance or rustic charm is your thing; whether you want a church-based or civil ceremony, perhaps using the services of a celebrant to craft a truly individual day. The stunning cathedral at St David’s is only available to couples with a genuine connection to the town, but there are many other beautiful churches and chapels across the counties for your ceremony (you may need a special licence if you don’t live nearby). If you are celebrating your union with a civil ceremony, or looking for a fabulous reception venue, there are plenty to choose from. For those

seeking a sustainable wedding day, the Ceridwen Centre, tucked away in a Carmarthenshire valley offers a magical atmosphere combined with respect for the venue’s surroundings and support for local producers. Sustainable credentials with the grandeur of a country house backdrop can be found at Rhosygilwen near Cilgerran, and there are many more venues across the counties, from luxury hotels, such as Hammet House to quirky barns. You could even have a picnic on the beach. West Wales is also well placed to offer stunning accommodation for guests. If you’re coming to a wedding here, why not make a holiday of it with friends. Cottages such as Seaview in Moylegrove sleep 10 and are the perfect base for a wedding house party. Alternatively, book in to individual cottages in the same location as your friends and guests: privacy and conviviality combined.

Top Tips for the perfect Wedding Day You’ve found your soulmate and set the date – our top tips will mean that your wedding day goes without a hitch!
Y
ou’re getting married? Congratulations! The hard part – finding your soul mate – is over, yet the practicalities of tying the knot can present challenges you might never have imagined. Here are Your Local Crowd’s practical top tips for brides, grooms and guests for a perfect wedding day. Maintain general calm and good humour • Stag do sense: On no account plan the stag or hen do for the night before the wedding. Book the celebrations for at least 6 weeks before the big day – or change your friends… • Pack a wedding emergency kit: a spare pair of tights, safety pins, a needle & thread, mints, throat sweets, paracetamol, plasters, hand cream, tissues… • Allocate jobs: You have bridesmaids, a best man, ushers. Give them jobs to do. Plan for your ‘wedding face’ • Plan your tan: spray tans (indeed, any fake tan) need a few days to tone down a little, and to ensure
that you don’t stain your outfit. • Hair & make up ‘dry run’: Make sure you’ve got everything you need at least 2 weeks before the wedding. Waterproof mascara is a must, in case you were wondering… • Allergy advice: Don’t use any new cosmetic products in the run up to the big day. Avoid dressing difficulties • Remove labels in advance: The last thing you want to be doing on the morning of your wedding is scrubbing a label off the sole of your beautiful wedding shoes. • Put your jacket on when you arrive at the venue: that way you’ll avoid creases. • Walk round the front of the wedding car: don’t risk your dress or trouser leg catching on the exhaust pipe. Anticipate great photos… • Keep it simple: If your photographer is taking ‘preparation pics’, avoid wearing distracting clothes or jewellery that could ‘date’ the final photographs. Declutter the room where the photos will be taken. • Try not to greet guests independently: stay together
On no account plan the stag or hen do for the night before the wedding 12 YOUR LOCAL CROWD
www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk
during the reception so your photographer will have lots of opportunities to take relaxed snaps of you together. • Tell guests if they are needed for photos: don’t risk vital ‘cast members’ going missing after the ceremony! • Ban your guests from using mobile phone photography at the ceremony, they will ruin the professional photographs, which YOU are paying for! Keep comfortable • Honour the weather: Watching the forecast will help you plan – if it’s going to be hot, make sure there will be water on hand. Stash some umbrellas (this is Wales!) and make sure you won’t get cold. • Avoid hunger pangs: organise a hamper in your transport so you can have a snack together and keep your energy up after the service. No time for a hamper? Tuck an energy bar into your emergency kit. • Dancing shoes: Practice walking in your wedding shoes, and make sure you have an appropriately chic or suitably tongue in cheek alternative pair for when the dancing starts. Moments in Time
A wedding celebrated in style
at Cardigan Castle 1927
With Cardigan Castle now being licensed for weddings, it is worth remembering that many couples have held their wedding celebrations there in the past. WORDS: Glen Johnson
I
N 1924 Cardigan Castle was leased, and soon afterwards sold, to John Evans, a local auctioneer and estate agent. John Evans was the son of Cardigan tailor Owen Evans, and had been raised at Castle Street, Bridge End, Cardigan – his father was formerly a tenant of the Castle Green (Cardigan Castle) estate. He set up home happily at Castle Green with his wife, Elizabeth and their daughter and only child, Morfydd. On July 1st 1927 Miss Mary Elizabeth Morfydd Evans, then aged 23, married Dr. John Stuart Spickett, aged 30, of Bungay, Suffolk, at the Parish Church of St. Mary in the town. The church was decorated with flowers by Mr Arthur Mapstone, and the bells rang in merry peals. One of the bell-ringers was Gladys Wadley who was a member of staff at the castle. She soon afterwards married the chauffeur/ gardener, the highly respected Mr Victor Reed, and their wedding breakfast was held at the castle. The Bishop of St. David’s himself officiated at the Spickett wedding, ably assisted by the Rural Dean and Vicar of Cardigan, the Rev. D

M Jones. There was a high quality of choral music at the service. One of the six bridesmaids was Miss Muriel Evans - the Mayoress of Cardigan. The others were Miss Grace Spickett - the groom’s sister; Miss Eileen Owen, the bride’s cousin; Miss Marjorie Matthews, Fernleigh, Pendre; Miss Vera Harries, Penylan; and Miss Leila Evans, Richmond. Little Miss Betty Lloyd of Lampeter was the train-bearer. The Best Man was Mr Harold Spickett - the brother of the groom. Mr P O Davies of Swansea also acted as a groomsman. The wedding party allegedly included the singer Madame Pattie. The report of the wedding took up the whole of the front page of that week’s ‘Cardigan & Tivy-Side Advertiser.’ The wedding party then returned from St Mary’s Church to the castle where there was a sumptuous sit-down meal for their Wedding Breakfast in the Dining Room of Castle Green

House, which, courtesy of the fine weather, was followed by the taking of the wedding photographs and a pleasant afternoon enjoying the sunshine in the castle grounds. A phenomenal quantity of gifts were received by the couple, who were both very popular. Flags and bunting decorated much of the town, including a flag on the Guildhall. After the celebrations were over, the couple took their honeymoon in Cornwall, travelling from Cardigan by car. On July 6th 1928 a son named Keith was born to Dr. and Mrs. John Stuart Spickett. On February 6th 1932 another son, Goronwy Spickett, was born in what is now referred to as the ‘Silk Room’ at Castle Green House to Mrs. John Stuart Spickett. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Morfydd Spickett sadly died on March 24th1933, aged 29. Her son, Keith, has visited Cardigan Castle numerous times during the restoration process and has regaled and charmed the staff and volunteers with his memories of the castle and the Evans and Spickett families. with the Pembrokeshire coastline?
Living so close to the coast, it can be tempting to take the wild beauty of the coves and beaches, the diversity of the wildlife and the sheer power of the sea for granted. Coasteering – a sport involving navigating yourself around the coastline swimming, jumping, scrambling, rock hopping and generally getting your adrenaline pumping – is a brilliant way to appreciate our coast in all its glory and Celtic Quest Coasteering are well placed to help you make the most of the experience. Ideal for group bookings! PERFECT FOR HENS & STAGS! WORDS Sally Sellwood

E met with the team from Celtic Quest on Abereiddy beach. It was a warm, early summer day in 2015, the sea was sparkling and inviting as my husband, children (aged 11 and 9 at the time) and I kitted up in thick wetsuits and received a practical and comprehensive safety briefing (which was also concise enough to hold our children’s attention), before heading in to the sea for our coasteering adventure. We were in a group with another family, led by the legendary Cleopatra Brown, and Neil (who I’m sure is equally legendary). From the beach we followed the rocky shoreline round, swimming, climbing, floating and leaping in at (safe and supervised) opportunities, ending
up in the truly spectacular Blue Lagoon for a series of increasingly high leaps into the lagoon itself. Coasteering is truly something to be experienced to fully appreciate it. I’ll admit that at times, it was scary – even as someone who doesn’t consider themselves to have a problem with heights. The brilliant thing about the Celtic Quest team is that they are professional and clearly have safety uppermost in their minds. At the same time, they make it hugely fun, encouraging children and adults to embrace the rocks and the water with a variety of different jumps and jumping styles from ‘the Penguin’ to ‘Superman’. We spent over 2 hours in the water, protected from the cold by the
Sally taking wet gear provided by Celtic Quest the leap. Coasteering as part of the session.
The only thing we were asked to bring was old trainers and a pair of shorts to wear over the wet suit. Celtic Quest Coasteering made our session totally adventurous, yet very safe. They pitched it just right and we all felt we’d been stretched physically and mentally by the experience in a good way. We’d definitely go again. At £44 per person, we thought it was good value for money and the team took loads of photos and video which were available to purchase on a memory stick – a great reminder of a brilliant afternoon! There are plenty of ways to cut costs, but it’s all in the planning! The perfect day out with mum Looking for a day out that didn’t involve the usual shopping or cake, we headed to Lamphey Court for some well deserved R&R. WORDS Sam Jones They Say: The Spa at Best Western Lamphey Court Hotel has been created to provide a complete spa and leisure retreat overlooking the fabulous Pembrokeshire countryside. A great location with fine food and an unrivalled selection of treatments and therapies to help you towards a state of total rejuvenation. We Say: We booked the Bespoke Spa Package, £35, for mum, which included use of the thermal bathing suite, infinity pool, aromatic sauna & steam room, two course lunch, robe & slippers and the Revive Spa £55, for myself, as above but with a 25 minute treatment. Lamphey Court is an impressive Georgian building, surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens. On
arrival, it stood bathed in glorious sunshine and we were a little reluctant to step inside on such a lovely day. We need not have worried as on entering the spa, it became apparent that the purpose built building had been designed to capture the stunning views. Relaxing on the comfortable recliners poolside, we soaked up the warmth of the early summer sunshine through the large windows that ran the length of the building. A 14metre infinity pool was surrounded by loungers and although there were around 15 guests using the spa, we did not feel crowded. After a dip in the pool and jacuzzi, it was time for my back neck and shoulder massage where my knots were gently unravelled with
a relaxing but firm massage, using warmed oils. Lunch was served in the main hotel, in the large and bright conservatory. Sat in our robes we enjoyed two courses of delicious food. A good but small selection was on offer for this package. We opted for Welsh rarebit, followed by Honeyed Ham with Salad. Other choices included Smoked Salmon, and Fish & Chips. The portions were generous and we struggled to finish the main, but enjoyable none the less. After lunch we headed back to the spa for a further hour of blissful relaxation. After Effects: We left feeling stress free and rejuvenated. What I liked about this spa is how bright and airy it feels, being able to relax overlooking the manicured gardens and catch up with mum over gentle natter made it the perfect mother & daughter retreat. 01646 672273 www.lampheycourt.co.uk

EFORE you start your own conversion project it’s a great idea to find out as much as you can about what it’s like to live in a small space for a while and to experience the finishes and materials that you could use. One way to try out different types of living accommodation is to holiday in them. Celtic Sustainables have recently supplied local eco holiday, training and retreat centre, The Ceridwen Centre in Drefelin, with Thermafleece cosywool sheep’s wool insulation for their unusual new accommodation. Cosywool Sheep’s wool insulation is the perfect material for insulating living space, no
matter what the size or construction, as it is long-lasting, safe and easy to handle - you can use a pair of normal household scissors to cut it to size. It also has low embodied energy so great for your carbon footprint as it is produced using British Wool and manufactured in the UK. Most importantly though, because it is made of 75% wool it acts as a moisture buffer by absorbing and releasing excess moisture - even at a moisture content of 20%, the wool fibre will feel dry to the touch and its insulating performance will not be affected! This is in contrast to mineral fibre that can lose a lot of its thermal performance as a result of small increases in moisture level. Simone from the Ceridwen Centre said “Cosywool sheep’s wool insulation was the obvious choice for

Summer Gardening
How to make your garden bloom
and surround yourself with glorious colour
S
UMMER’S here, and the question is not so much ‘what to do’ as ‘what to do first’ to keep on top of the garden and ensure you have some time to enjoy relaxing outside too. Here’s our guide to some of the major jobs that need to be done. Cut the grass - Some insist on regimented stripes, while others take a more ‘free form’ approach. However you do it, cutting the grass regularly is an inevitable part of the summer. Spread the clippings in shallow layers on your compost heap, or spread them at the base of hedges to prevent weeds growing. Pest Control - If you are enjoying the warmer weather, you can guarantee that the garden pests will be out in force. Blackfly and aphids thrive in warm weather.
Greenhouse chic - Don’t forget that it’s possible for your greenhouse to get too warm. You can paint special shade paint on the panes, and if the forecast is for high temperatures, try hosing the floor in the morning to create humidity during the day.
TOP TIPS 1. Water – water everywhere! 2. Cut the grass 3. Keep an eye on the greenhouse 4. Watch out for pests 5. Regular hoeing will keep the weeds down 6. Prune your spring -flowering shrubs 7. Add instant colour with hanging baskets and summer bedding 8. Support tall or floppy plants with stakes 9. Start to harvest 10. Take advantage of drier weather for maintenance jobs
Water, water everywhere - Even with all the rain we had over the winter, the garden needs to be kept watered. Avoid watering in the heat of the day and be mindful of your overall water consumption, using rainwater stored in water butts or domestic grey water where possible.
Hoe, hoe, hoe… - The weeds will try to flourish in the summer months just as much as the plants you want to be in your garden, so regular hoeing will keep them under control. Little and often is a better approach
Keep on top of dead-heading to prolong flowering 28 YOUR LOCAL CROWD
www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk
than blitzing everything in one hit. Clear up after Spring - Spring-flowering shrubs will be ready for pruning by June. As bedding and repeat flowering perennials get going, keep on top of dead-heading to prolong flowering. Support tall plants - Your plants and flowers will make the most of the warmer temperatures to do what they do best – grow. Make sure you keep an eye on taller plants, or those that have a tendency to flop, and stake them to avoid damage. Add instant colour - The summer is time to celebrate colour and vibrancy and planting out summer bedding and positioning hanging baskets will bring an instant holiday vibe to your garden, making everything cheerful! A lick of paint - With drier weather comes the opportunity to give a bit of TLC to any exterior woodwork, benches, picnic tables etc. Take the opportunity to add a coat of paint or wood preservative. Reap the benefits - Those of you who were organised enough to get planting early will be able to start harvesting the first crops – early potatoes, lettuces and radishes will start to become available from your plot. Above all – enjoy your garden over the next few months!

With the weather warming up and the garden really getting going, there are a million and one jobs to be doing around the garden before settling down with a cup of tea (or a glass of Pimms) and really enjoying your outdoor haven.

Try it, it really does work... Why our print advertising not only delivers, but delivers better than other forms of advertising.
32 YOUR LOCAL CROWD
whilst at the hairdressers, or in the local café. 7.Print Persuades Purchasers – How many of us have purchased a new product or service as a direct result of the advertisement found whilst flicking through a magazine? 8. Drives Online Research – According to the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, 47.2 percent of shoppers are most likely to start an online search after viewing a magazine ad. 9. All Round Approach – It’s not just all about digital advertising. The attitude of companies that ‘digital is the future/print is dead’ are threatening the future of their businesses. Your Local Crowd currently publish 30,000 free magazines, delivering 27,500 magazines direct to door across Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire & Carmarthenshire. The remainder are dropped into local garages, doctors’ surgeries and local café’s over a three month period. On average, each edition is read by over 120,000 people. Combining both print and digital platforms gives an exceptionally wide reach for local business. All magazine content is also available at www.yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

9 Reasons why you should place your business with us in print… 1. Trust – Believe it or not, readers do trust print more than the web, according to new research by MediaVest, people are seven times more likely to turn to print publications for fashion & beauty content. 2. Prestige – With prints rich history, if an article or advertisement appears in print, its more respected. 3. Reach your target audience – Advertisers can have their adverts placed alongside relevant editorial. With digital advertising, you can never be sure if your advert is reaching the right audience at the right time. 4. Engagement is high – When you are reading a newspaper or magazine, you are not doing much else. It holds your attention. 5. Branding – It’s easy to remember an eye-catching visual advert seen in a magazine. Research has shown that magazine ads have the second highest receptivity of any media, second only to TV. 6. Longevity– Magazines get shared and passed on in households and among friends and stick around for months, even years. Think about where you can pick up a magazine... at the doctors’ surgery,
Added to this, local advertisers receive a three month social media promotion, driving traffic back to their own website, and free entry onto our digital business directory. Cybercrime & Online Fraud
Advice on how to protect yourself
Cybercrime and on-line fraud comes in many forms, and if you have a personal computer (PC), Laptop, iPad etc. then it can affect you. There are some very simple steps that you can take to protect yourself. • Don’t give any personal information (name, address, bank details, email or phone number) to organisations or people before verifying their credentials. • Many frauds start with a phishing email. Remember that banks and financial institutions will not send you an e mail asking you to click on a link and confirm your bank details. Do not trust such emails, even if they look genuine. You can always call your bank using the phone number on a genuine piece of correspondence, website (typed directly into the address bar) or the phone book to check if you’re not sure. • Destroy and preferably shred receipts with your card details on and post with your name and address on. Identity
fraudsters don’t need much information in order to be able to clone your identity. • Make sure your computer has up-to-date anti-virus software and a firewall installed. Ensure your browser is set to the highest level of security notification and monitoring to prevent malware issues and computer crime. • Sign-up to Verified by Visa or Mastercard Secure Code whenever you are given the option when shopping on-line. This involves you registering a password with your card company and adds an additional layer of security to on-line transactions with signed-up retailers. • If you receive bills, invoices or receipts for things you haven’t bought, or financial institutions you don’t normally deal with contact you about outstanding debts, take action. Your identity may have been stolen. • You should regularly get a copy of your credit file and check it for entries you don’t recognise. Callcredit, Equifax and Experian
Destroy and preferably shred receipts with your card details on and post with your name and address on
can all provide your credit file. An identity protection service such as “ProtectMyID” monitors your Experian credit report and alerts you by e mail or SMS to potential fraudulent activity. If it’s a fraud, a dedicated caseworker will help you resolve the issue. • Be extremely wary of post, phone calls or emails offering business deals out of the blue. If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always question it. • If you have been a victim of fraud , be aware of “fraud recovery fraud”. This is when fraudsters pretend to be a lawyer or a law enforcement officer and tell you they can help you recover the money you’ve already lost. • If you need advice about fraud, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 to discuss your situation with one of their specialist fraud advisors. To report a fraud, you can either use the on-line fraud reporting form or make your report on the above telephone number.
