TENBY PEMBROKESHIRE The best of the Welsh seaside all wrapped up in a medieval wall, elegant streets, with plenty of culture and a splash of sporting prowess thrown in, ‘Denbigh the Fish’ has ‘holiday’ nailed. Situated at the western end of the sweeping Carmarthen Bay, Tenby has been on the leisure map since the 1800s, and yet there is so much more to Tenby than simply tourism. Its strategic position made it an obvious place for settlement, and records date back to a settlement in the 9th century. Protected by a medieval wall, the future Henry VII of England sheltered here during the Wars of the Roses, and the town subsequently became an important trading port. Sadly, Tenby experienced a bad ‘Civil War’, changing hands between Royalists and Parliamentarian troops a couple of times; shortly afterwards, plague devastated the town. Tenby slid into decline until the Victorian tourists took an interest in the Welsh coast, and Tenby’s renaissance commenced. The seaside is a ‘given’ at Tenby with a number of Blue ACCOMMODATION, FOOD & DRINK Tenby has plenty of places to stay, from family campsites to top class hotels. Trefloyne Manor offers 4 star accommodation with a golf course, while the Tenby House Hotel is right in the heart of things. Try Broadmead for Boutique B&B or for camping, there’s Windmill Hill Caravan Park or ‘wild camping’ at Skrinkle Bay, Manorbier, and visit Manorbier Castle while you’re there. Tenby has plenty of great places to eat. Try The Bucaneer for pub food or the hidden charms of Plantagenet House. For seafood lovers,

Flag beaches to enjoy. If you tire of building sandcastles, you can get your blood pumping with a wide variety of watersports, join the local sailing club as a visitor go climbing at Tenby’s indoor climbing wall, walk up Castle Hill (home to Tenby Museum and Art Gallery) or visit Caldey Island, inhabited since the Stone Age and now home to a community of Cistercian monks. You can scare yourself silly on a ghost walk or for a more traditionally Welsh outing, visit the Love Spoon Workshop. Tenby has a number of art galleries featuring the work of many fine artists. You can find out what life was like in a Tudor Merchant’s House, imagine yourself back in time as a fisherman praying for safe return at St Julian’s Church, or check out the modern day RNLI heros at Tenby’s new lifeboat station. why not buy your own, fresh from the fishermen? NEED TO KNOW Getting There: Tenby is on the South Pembrokeshire coast, at the end of the A477 and A478 roads. Parking: Tenby has a number of car parks in town, and limited amounts of on street parking. Public Transport: Tenby has a railway station, and bus links across Pembrokeshire. Dogs: Restrictions apply between 1st May and 30 September on some beaches. South Beach allows dogs all year.

LAUGHARNE CARMARTHENSHIRE Soak up the landscape and surroundings enjoyed by Dylan Thomas for the last years of his life, an area rich in history and still offering a unique perspective on life as it used to be. The Castle of Abercorran (now Laugharne Castle) was built by the de Brian family in the early 12th Century, when grants of land in the area were made to the Flemish whose own lands had suffered extensive flooding. Abercorran became Laugharne when Owen Laugharne of St Brides married Elizabeth de Brian. Laugharne Castle was seized by Rhys ap Gryffudd after the death of Henry II, returning to the Crown’s ownership in the early 13th Century. The castle also played an interesting role in the 17th Century Civil War, Laugharne Castle changed sides a couple of times and was eventually burnt and left in ruins by Cromwell. Laugharne Corporation is one of only 2 remaining medieval corporations in Britain, and Laugharne continues the medieval open field farming system. More recently, Laugharne was the last home of Dylan Thomas, and was the birthplace of Parsons Pickles.

Laugharne is more than just castle ruins. There’s a Victorian garden to enjoy, beautiful views of the estuary, and of course the garden summerhouse where Dylan Thomas is known to have written. St Martin’s Church is home to the Laugharne Cross, a stone slab featuring an unusual Celtic cross design. Dylan Thomas’s Boathouse offers the opportunity to experience the place where Thomas experienced his creative renaissance. Follow in the writer’s footsteps on the Dylan Thomas Birthday Walk. The Tin Shed experience occupies a tin shed originally built in 1933, and is dedicated to showing how life was for ordinary people during World War2. Just down the road at Pendine, you’ll find not only a huge beach, but the Pendine Museum of Speed commemorating the location for many early land speed record attempts. Finally, each Spring, Laugharne is home to the ‘wilfully different’ Laugharne Weekend music and literature festival.

THE PERFECT BACKDROP FOR A NEW DRAMA SERIES Filming has started on new joint S4C and BBC Wales drama series, with the series being filmed on location in around Laugharne in Carmarthenshire and the Vale of Glamorgan, with studio scenes recorded in Bridgend. Un Bore Mercher/Keeping Faith is the latest co-commission by S4C and BBC Wales. Eve Myles stars in the breathless domestic noir thriller set in Carmarthenshire. The eight-part series started production in May and will premiere this autumn as Un Bore Mercher on S4C, followed by an English language version called Keeping Faith on BBC One Wales early next year. Filmed back to back in Welsh and English, the series tells the story of lawyer, wife and mother Faith (Myles) as she fights to find the truth behind the sudden disappearance of her husband. She comes to discover that her beautiful, idyllic hometown set on the estuary, harbours many dark secrets that threaten the lives of Faith and her family. Faith’s ordeal transforms her from a stay at home, fun-loving and carefree mother to detective, action hero and lover. She takes risks and gambles and finds a new inner strength. Co-written by Matthew Hall (Judge John Deed) and Anwen Huws (Gwaith Cartref, Pobol y Cwm), the series will be filmed on location in the Vale of Glamorgan, Carmarthenshire and around Laugharne, with studio scenes recorded in Bridgend. A cast of some of Wales’ best loved talent include Matthew Gravelle (Broadchurch, 35 Diwrnod, Y Gwyll/Hinterland), Mali Harries (Y Gwyll/Hinterland), Mark Lewis Jones (Byw Celwydd, Stella, National Treasure) and Aneirin Hughes (Y Gwyll/ Hinterland). Un Bore Mercher/Keeping Faith is a Vox

Pictures production directed by Pip Broughton (Under Milk Wood and The Green Hollow) who is co-producing with Nora Ostler (Y Gwyll/ Hinterland and Gwaith Cartref). Gwawr Martha Lloyd for S4C, Maggie Russell is Executive Producer for BBC Wales and Adrian Bate for Vox Pictures. Funded through the Welsh Government’s Media Investment Budget, which is advised by Pinewood Pictures, and S4C and BBC Wales, all the principal photography will be shot on locations around Wales, with post-production work also carried out in Wales. Location assistance was provided from Wales Screen, part of the Welsh Government’s creative industries team, helping to maximise the economic benefits for Wales. Gwawr Martha Lloyd, S4C Drama Content Commissioner says; “We’re very excited about this new and original series that will be premiering on S4C this autumn. With a stellar cast and a completely compelling story, plot and setting, we’re hoping the audience will grow to love the world and the characters of Un Bore Mercher as much as we in S4C have as we worked to develop the series. The series intends to take the viewer on a thrilling, emotional and warm journey which will pull at the heart-strings but will also make them smile along the way.” Nick Andrews, Head of Commissioning at BBC Wales said: “This is fantastic news. To have a genuine homegrown drama, produced by world-class talent at the top of their game. I can’t wait to see what the team will do.”

BEAUTIFUL BEER GARDENS Looking for that special beer garden, here we share a few of our favourites

Pictured: The Ferry Inn, Pembrokeshire ©Sam Jones

sam@yourlocalcrowd.co.uk

THE SHIP INN Tresaith, Ceredigion My firm favourite! Good food, great atmosphere, good ales and a simply stunning vista. The perfect spot to relax after a stroll on the beach and a great place to catch sight of Ceredigion’s famous bottlenose dolphins and porpoises. I’ve spent many happy evenings here watching the sunset over a glass of chilled white… Perfect!

THE HARBOURMASTER Aberaeron, Ceredigion Perhaps not in the perfect position as it looks out to a wall, but a wall situated right on the edge of the idyllic harbour of Aberaeron. A popular and well known watering hole and fine restaurant popular with both tourists and regulars a like, who can enjoy the sights of the colourful houses opposite and boats bobbing…beyond the wall.

THE FERRY INN Poppit Road, St Dogmaels, Pembrokeshire A beautiful, historic, riverside pub, with a unique beer garden, its very own jetty and two tier terrace overlooking the river Teifi estuary. The food offering is good value and is considered a great and recommended gastro pub for some al Fresco dining.

THE OLD SAILORS Pwllgwaelod, Dinas Cross, Pembrokeshire Another of my personal favourites has to be this hidden gem, with a garden claiming to be “the most romantic location in north Pembrokeshire?” Situated

@ylcrowd

on the beach not only offering superb summer sunsets, but a great selection of local fresh fish and seafood. 500 years old and formally called the Sailors Safety referring to the light it once kept burning as a guide to ships.

LAWRENNY ARMS HOTEL Creswell Quay, Kilgetty, Pembrokeshire Affectionately known locally as The Dog, The Lawrenny Arms sits in one of the finest locations in Pembrokeshire, with sweeping views of the estuary towards Cresswell Quay and Carew Castle. A popular spot for boats to tie up for refreshments, but also a well known pub for local walkers. With a huge garden, magnificent views, freshly prepared food and good ales, what more can you ask for?

WONDERFUL WALKS Coastal paths, sweeping beaches, hidden woodlands, impressive hills – it would be impossible to list them all. Here we share one of our favourites walks from each of the counties Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire @ylcrowd

CEREDIGION YNYS LOCHTYN About: A small peninsula jutting out into Cardigan Bay offers the opportunity to see soaring sea birds, seals, and a secret beach. This 3 mile, circular route could be the jewel in the Ceredigion Coast Path’s crown. Walking: Take the steps at the back right corner of the beach by the Caffi Patio Café. Follow the coastal path along the top of the cliffs, passing Cilborth Beach. As Pen y Badell climbs up on your right, Ynys Lochtyn comes in to view on the left. Walk down on to the peninsula (dogs on leads) to enjoy the clifftops and carpets of wild flowers, or carry on the path skirting the base of the hill then turning north. Take the footpath through the Urdd centre, then cross the road heading down the hill and follow the footpath through Pigeonsford woods for about half a mile before turning right on to the B4321 back into Llangrannog. Location: Grid Ref: SN312542; OS 1:50,000 Sheet No. 145; Llangrannog is reached from the A487 at Brynhoffnant. The CardiBach bus serves Llangrannog, X50, 552 and T5 services stop in Brynhoffnant.

CARMARTHENSHIRE Llansteffan About: A coastal village, a ruined castle and spectacular views across the three estuaries and Carmarthen Bay and plenty of opportunity for a postwalk cuppa or pint – what more could a walker want? Walking: From the beach car park, take

the footpath following signs to the castle – the castle grounds allows dogs on leads and is free to enter. Head back to the very quiet road, and follow the path back round which takes you back to the beach. At high tide, follow the headland back to the car park, or walk along the beach. Location: Grid ref. SN355105; OS 1:50,000 Sheet No. 159. Llansteffan is easily reached from Carmarthen via the B4312. Bus 227 operates daily from Carmarthen.

PEMBROKESHIRE Bosherton Lakes (Bosherton Lily Ponds) About: In early summer, these 3 flooded limestone valleys, now part of the National Trust’s Stackpole site, are full of water lilies. If you miss the water lilies, you may still catch a glimpse of an otter or some of the other rich wildlife that can be spotted here all year. Walking: From Bosherton, follow the path left to the lake and over Bosherton Causeway, crossing the western arm of the lakes. Continue to the limestone bluff, (you can detour on your left to the Fishpond Camp, a 3,000yr old coastal fort) and keep following the path, crossing the central arm, then continue to the right. Cross the grassy bridge and continue towards the sea. You can follow the ponds back to Bosherton, head to the beach at Broadhaven, or explore Mere Pool Valley. Location: Grid ref: SR966948; OS 1:50,000 Sheet No. 158. Take the B4319 from Pembroke to Bosherton. The Coastal Cruiser bus service 387/388 Pembroke Dock to Stackpole, serves Bosherton

company Celtic Sustainables. We were delighted when they very generously supplied a range of Earthborn clay based paints and their considerable expertise and advice. We found Earthborn Paints to be of superior quality and very easy to work with and we would have no hesitation in recommending them for anyone else undertaking a project of their own. “ ‘When we approached Celtic Sustainables for help they did not hesitate to offer all the paint needed to redecorate the room and have even spent time helping us with the work and advising us on care of the building,’ said Ann Stokoe, Guildhall Manager. ‘Their positive response is very much appreciated and has enabled us to fit the work in between client bookings to keep the disruption to a minimum.’ Glyn Hyett, Director of Celtic Sustainables, said: ‘It ihas been a pleasure to be involved in the redecoration of this grand community space. With historic solid wall buildings it is vital to keep the walls breathable so that the walls dry out and a healthy indoor space

is maintained. Earthborn claypaints are perfect for that purpose.’ Earthborn Claypaint is a unique eco paint with a luxurious, ultra-matt finish for walls and ceilings. The beautiful range of traditional and contemporary colours are soothing and inspiring. Health and environmental benefits are unbeatable, too - Claypaint is virtually free of VOCs and other harmful emissions, odour free, totally oil free and highly breathable - perfect for traditional buildings. The Menter team chose Humpty Dumpty Eggshell for the skirting boards, Yum Yum and Posset Claypaint for the walls and an eggshell white paint for the 7 large windows in the hall. The colour scheme is light and uplifting and brings the hall to life; perfect for all the shows and weddings that take place in the Hall. The Grade 2 listed building in the centre of Cardigan town was reopened in 2008 after a £2.5 million restoration. After nine years of weddings, concerts, dances and public meetings, the Great Hall interior was in need of a facelift. The Guildhall is Grade II* listed and has been at the centre of the town’s community since it was opened in 1860. The building was renovated under the Townscape Heritage Initiative, which funded the regeneration of many of the town’s historic buildings between 2002 and 2007. Celtic Sustainables, who supply natural and eco-friendly decorating and building renovation products from their base in Parc Teifi, Cardigan, donated the paint and their expertise. Julian Beynon-Lewis, Managing Director of local, not for profit community company, Menter Aberteifi, who manages the Guildhall said.... “After eight years of heavy use the Great Hall was in need of redecoration. It’s important when working on an iconic heritage building like the 157 year old Cardigan Guildhall to use sympathetic materials so we approached local

GLOW WITH CHOCOLATE Now you need no excuse to eat chocolate as apparently Cocoa hydrates the skin, making it firmer and more supple. Dark chocolate contains high levels of antioxidants, flavonols. It’s suggested that eating chocolate that’s at least 70 percent cacao, a couple of squares a day, should be enough to improve skin luminosity. Happy days! LOOKING WIDER Leanne Bird of BirdSol, looks at the importance and benefits of an integrated approach to pain and injury management. Are you feeling aches and pains in the neck, shoulders, back, hips or knees, or maybe suffering from tension headaches, niggles, repeated injuries or stress? Then to improve your chance of recovery or maintaining as much functionality as possible, an integrated approach to treatment or support might be just what you are looking for. When a part of our body starts showing signs of stress the usual course of action is to either ignore it and hope it goes away, or focus on trying to cover up or treat the source of the pain. However, often the place where pain is surfacing isn’t necessarily where the issue lies, or is only part of the story. An integrated approach looks beyond the referred issue and can include an overall look at the body, mind and lifestyle. This approach can help support recovery, reduce impacts or form part of pain management. For example, chronic knee pain can be linked to issues with the postural imbalances or other issues in the hip, back, shoulders and/or feet. In order to help to resolve the issue you could try a long term plan including a period of massages, along with training sessions of strengthening and flexibility, to try to release tension and rebalance and strengthen the body, and pain management. This could reduce or eliminate

@Bird_Sol_

the need for painkillers through resolving the issue, improving it or preventing the issue worsening. There may also be lifestyle factors at home, work or hobbies - even something as simple as the way you carry your bag or the footwear you are using - contributing to the issue. Alternatively the issues could be related to weight and an additional weight management program may be suitable. Another example is how stress can be linked to your neck or shoulder pain or headache in the back of your head. Stress may be causing the tension, or you could be providing a negative feedback loop by having a poor posture, releasing stress hormones into the body (cortisol) and decreasing testosterone . Just relieving the muscles is not enough in the medium to long term and the issue often returns. With an integrated approach, the direct source of pain, posture, desk set-up and stress-resilience can be considered in the form of massage, lifestyle educa-

tion, postural education, yoga and meditation and exercise to provide more long term relief or minimise the issue as much as possible. Stress can also impact how our body processes food and nutrients, as well as your taste and appetite, and therefore may be linked to issues with weight management or digestive complaints. Integrated approaches can also be used for re-injury prevention, weight loss/gain, management of arthritis, cardio-vascular heart disease, type II diabetes, MS among other issues and conditions. To find out what may be the best approach for you, you may need someone who can look at the whole picture. As a Fitness and Wellbeing Coach and Consultant I use my knowledge of personal training, yoga and sports massage to provide a unique insight and integrated treatment plan for my clients, where they can eliminate a variety of issues by undertaking an integrated program. BLOOMING GLORIOUS! With the weather warming up and the garden really getting going, there are a million and one jobs to be doing around the garden before settling down with a cup of tea (or a glass of Pimms) and really enjoying your outdoor haven.

Summer’s here, and the question is not so much ‘what to do’ as ‘what to do first’ to keep on top of the garden and ensure you have some time to enjoy relaxing outside too. Here’s our guide to some of the major jobs that need to be done. CUT THE GRASS - Some insist on regimented stripes, while others take a more ‘free form’ approach. However you do it, cutting the grass regularly is an inevitable part of the summer. Spread the clippings in shallow layers on your compost heap, or spread them at the base of hedges to prevent weeds growing. PEST CONTROL - If you are enjoying the warmer weather, you can guarantee that the garden pests will be out in force. Blackfly and aphids thrive in warm weather. GREENHOUSE CHIC - Don’t forget that it’s possible for your greenhouse to get too warm. You can paint special shade paint on the panes, and if the forecast is for high temperatures, try hosing the floor in

will be ready for pruning by June. As bedding and repeat flowering perennials get going, keep on top of dead-heading to prolong flowering. SUPPORT TALL PLANTS - Your plants and flowers will make the most of the warmer temperatures to do what they do best – grow. Make sure you keep an eye on taller plants, or those that have a tendency to flop, and stake them to avoid damage. ADD INSTANT COLOUR - The summer is time to celebrate colour and vibrancy and planting out summer bedding and positioning hanging baskets will bring an instant holiday vibe to your garden, making everything cheerful! A LICK OF PAINT - With drier weather comes the opportunity to give a bit of TLC to any exterior woodwork, benches, picnic tables etc. Take the opportunity to add a coat of paint or wood preservative. REAP THE BENEFITS - Those of you who were organised enough to get planting early will be able to start harvesting the first crops – early potatoes, lettuces and radishes will start to become available from your plot. Above all – enjoy your garden over the next few months!

SHEDS The outdoor grown-up den, somewhere to retreat, hide, indulge in hobbies, create, or just have some peace in your own company. Love them or hate them, most of us have them!

n The word ‘shed’ has the same origin as ‘shade’. In Anglo–Saxon times a ‘scead’ was a place of rest in a shady place. n Believe it or not there are about 12 million sheds in Britain, yes thats right 12 million. My father has 6 of them! n 1/3 of men think having a shed has a positive effect on their relationship! n Authors Rudyard Kipling, Agatha Christie and Roald Dahl all wrote in their sheds. Dahl famously banned children from entering his shed by telling them

that ferocious wolves lived inside! Not forgetting Dylan Thomas of course. n In 1995, a 15–year–old boy was arrested for trying to build a nuclear reactor in his parents’ shed. He wanted to earn his Boy Scout Merit Badge and thought that was the best way to do it! n The garden shed was voted into the Millennium Dome’s national identity display as one of the top symbols of Britishness. n 1 in 5 Brits admit to spending time in their shed to escape their partners, with 21% of people

DELI DELIGHTS PATISSERIE WORKSHOP Mandy Wilcox of Deli Delights has been in the food business for over a decade – full of passion for what she does, it’s a natural step for her to share her passion and her knowledge in a series of carefully thought out workshops. We went along to her Patisserie workshop to learn and create sally sellwood

Meeting with the other attendees in the Guildhall kitchen on a sunny Saturday afternoon, we were offered tea or coffee and quickly donned aprons to get down to business. With a packed programme ahead of us: goodies to create including mint chocolate tarts, peach frangipane, crème patisserie and fresh tarts and freshly squeezed lime cheesecake, Mandy was reassuringly calm and confident as she explained her approach to gluten free pastry and baking. Many professionals talk about needing to have a ‘knack’ for pastry. Mandy makes it far less daunting. For those used to making pastry with flour with gluten, the gluten free version is different, and produces a slightly different end product. Under Mandy’s guidance, it was easy for us all to make pastry and line a series of tins and pastry cases. With the pastry made and tins lined, we created our individual lime cheesecakes. An easy recipe, Mandy nevertheless offered a wealth of advice and ideas to make a very special dessert out of what are essentially ‘store cupboard’ (and fridge) ingredients – no gelatine required! At the end of the workshops, once our cheesecakes had chilled and set in the fridge, she shared a great chocolate trick to make a white and milk lattice to sit on top of our cheesecakes – instant ‘wow’ factor, and so easy to achieve with a little guidance and knowhow which Mandy provided. Back to the pastry, and in succession, we learnt all about crème patisserie, essentially ‘real’ custard, and made our own batches from fresh, raw ingredients – eggs, sugar, gluten free flour, milk. With the crème patisserie set aside and cooling, we knocked up delicious frangipane filling for the peach frangipane tarts which then went into our pastry cases topped off with peach slices and flaked almonds to bake, before we turned our attention to the mint chocolate tarts. Once again, the art of a

promised treats to take home and enjoy – and with the techniques, recipe sheets and confidence to recreate them time and again. With a base of our freshly made and now cooled crème patisserie, we were let loose to decorate with a variety of fruits – apricots, blackberries, strawberries and redcurrants. Mandy shared the secrets of how the professionals get their tarts looking so tempting, revealing a great glaze, and urged us to finish our tarts with a flourish of mint. Painting with fruit and vegetables isn’t something we normally do. Most weekends we are out exploring, but today I decided to see what the children would make of painting with something other than brushes. My son detests getting paint on his hands so I wasn’t quite sure how well this would work. We used shallots, carrots, apples and potatoes. I cut the fruit and veg in half and put blobs of paint on a couple of plates so they could
