WALKING WITH THE WANDERER

Millington from Great Givendale

Time: 3 hours Distance: 5¾ miles

Millington is one of the most popular Wolds walking destinations. This route includes sections of the well-trod Wolds and Minster ways long-distance paths. As described, the walk returns to Great Givendale along a stretch of the outward route. This gives the opportunity to take refreshment at Millington. It is also possible to start and finish at Millington (Direction Point 2) reducing the distance to about five miles.

IS THIS WALK FOR ME?

Although not long, this is a relatively strenuous walk. The full route includes two steep climbs (one if not starting from Great Givendale) and a long haul up a more modest gradient. There is also one steep descent. There are no stiles. Route finding is easy except for spotting the unsigned bridleway gate (Direction Point 6). Cattle may be grazing in some fields. Most paths are in good condition but there is a short overgrown section (Direction Point 5).

DIRECTIONS

1/ From the parking spaces near Great Givendale church find the metal gate leading into the churchyard. Walk to the right of the building exiting through a wooden gate to continue through trees to a track. Turn right downhill. Go through a gate and keep to the right of a green painted building on a grassy path with a stream right. Continue through double gates either side of a bridge but then head steeply uphill with trees left. Here, as the trees end, keep ahead to a gate.

2/ Through the gate go right on a grassy track with a hedge right. Keep ahead on the track at barns. Pass a house to the right to reach a road at a T junction. Go straight ahead (signed Minster Way) following the road downhill to reach a crossroads.

3/ Go straight ahead (signed Millington) downhill (if starting from Millington turn right from the roadside parking beyond the church). As the road starts to bend right, turn left (signed Minster Way) going down the gravelled track. (To visit the Ramblers’ Rest and Gait Inn continue around the right bend into Millington). After a gate, keep ahead to take the boardwalk path indicated by a giant wooden arrow. Pass through a gate and at the end of the boardwalk head half-left (steeply uphill) aiming towards a fence-

GETTING THERE

The full route starts from Great Givendale which is 17 miles from York via the A166. Limited roadside parking is available near the church. Alternatively, the route can be shortened, and Great Givendale omitted, by starting at Millington (Direction Point 3) where there is plentiful roadside parking near the church. There are no feasible public transport options to either start point.

REFRESHMENTS

The Gait Inn in Millington is open daily except Monday but closes at 5pm on Sunday and is closed Thursday lunchtime. The highly recommended Ramblers’ Rest tearoom in the village is open until 4pm every day except Tuesday and Wednesday.

WHAT TO SEE

There are far reaching views at several points on this walk. The deep valley north of Millington (Sylvan Dale) has a typical Wolds flora. It, and the nearby Millington Wood, are both open to walkers for fuller exploration. Both Millington and Great Givendale have attractive churches, the former being Grade 1 listed, that are normally open to visitors.

corner just visible on the brow. At the fence turn right and climb the hillside keeping the fence left to eventually reach a gate at a prominent signpost.

4/ Go through the gate and turn left (Wolds Way) with a hedge and farm left. At a track/path junction go half left (Wolds Way). Follow the right edge of the large field with the valley left, soon starting to drop downhill then curving left with a deep side valley right. Reaching the field-corner go through a gate and descend into the valley following the obvious grassy path half left steeply downhill. At the bottom go left (public footpath sign) following the valley to a gate on the right. This leads to a short narrow path that crosses a bridge over a stream to reach a road.

5/ Cross straight over the road and climb the short bank to a gate. Through the gate, forge your way ahead, following a faint path up a shallow valley to a metal

DISCLAIMER

gate. Go through, ignoring a tempting metal gate right, to head uphill on a clear grassy track. Keep climbing, gradually ascending to a further gate just before which a track joins from the left. Continue through the gate towards farm buildings, after which the track becomes metalled and leads to a road.

6/ Turn left on the road. Now continue on the road for about 1100-metres, after which keep a sharp lookout for an unsigned bridleway on the right, accessed through a wooden gate (there is a prominent dead tree just beyond the gate). Walk down the side of the field with a hedge on the left to reach a gate.

Walks are undertaken at your own risk. Due care must be taken in following the walk, particularly after poor weather. Whilst every care is taken in compiling the description changes may have occurred since publication. Neither the walk author nor Your Local Link can accept any responsibility for errors or omissions.

7/ To return to Great Givendale go through the gate (if returning directly to Millington do not go through the gate but turn left on the grassy track to follow the route from Direction Point 2). Now continue to Great Givendale retracing your outward route, descending steeply downhill to the valley bottom, then crossing the stream, to proceed uphill through the pasture and along the track to the churchyard and parking spaces.

ADVOCACY YORK (OCAY)

This month we are focusing on the incredible local charity OCAY. They work hard to support people aged over 50 in York, providing advocacy and practical support to access services and benefits, making a positive impact on people’s lives. Read on to learn more about their services.

What do OCAY do?

Over the last six months OCAY has been able to assist 308 people to access support across the following areas; benefits, finance, energy, consumer rights, housing, and health— so it’s safe to say they cover pretty much everything!

Some people are experiencing financial hardship, overwhelmed by bureaucratic processes, facing communication barriers, feeling digitally excluded, or are unaware of their legal rights. OCAY ensures both that their voices are heard, and that they are able to access the right information. The support they offer empowers residents to be able to help themselves in the future.

Whether over the phone, in the office or even in your home, the support that OCAY offers is

always personalised.

The reason that OCAY is able to offer those they help with such a personal touch is that a lot of their community outreach is fulfilled by volunteers, by real members of our community who want to make a difference.

As OCAY look to make more of an impact to help even more over 50s in York, they’ll be looking for more people to volunteer their time to help. Whether you’re interested in volunteering yourself or would simply like to learn more about the impact OCAY has in York, read on. We’re sharing the story of the inspirational Olivia Siwoku, an award-winning OCAY volunteer and Uni of York student.

University of York student

Olivia Siwoku recently received a “Student Volunteering and Community Award” for her

wonderful work supporting local charity Older Citizens Advocacy York (OCAY).

The psychology student started volunteering for OCAY in her first year. She wanted something that fitted into her studies and part-time work, and OCAY offered her the opportunity of gaining valuable, flexible experience helping people, particularly those who find it difficult to use computers or complete complex forms.

Olivia explained “When I was nominated, it was totally unexpected. It’s a privilege to receive this award and to help so many people. It’s awful to lose your independence and a lot of my clients are living with dementia or other illnesses”.

Olivia recalls an individual she helped with a blue badge. The individual would go on to make a £100 donation to the charity, because it helped her and her husband — who is disabled and living with dementia— so much.

Olivia says, “Usually people have struggled on for some time, thinking the process is a bit of a minefield and not wanting to mess it up. The free support we offer can be life changing.”

For more information about the work they do, how to be a volunteer and how to access support: Call: 01904 676 200 Email: info@ocay.org.uk

Horoscopes James Christie

STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH: LIBRA

SCORPIO

23RD OCT – 21ST NOV

A charismatic member of the opposite sex will exert a strong influence over the events of this month, and I suspect that in most major decisions you’ll be following your heart rather than your head. Not to detract from any of your own achievements, you’ll be celebrating the victory and triumph of a man close to you –which you should find inspiring. Nice vibes in relationships with children and younger people, and there may well be a welcome reunion or homecoming before the month’s end.

SAGITTARIUS

22ND NOV – 21ST DEC

A powerful month for Sagittarians, and although your zodiac sign is the centaur, this month you’ll be acting much more like the lion – brave, bold, aggressive and determined to achieve goals and ambitions. It’s a very active month… not much time for standing still and daydreaming. Therefore, I would expect there to be some improvement in career prospects (even though it might mean a change in work routines) but alas, there might also be a brisance of tension in certain relationships when other people don’t know how you’re feeling or where you’re coming from…

CAPRICORN

22ND DEC – 19TH JAN

A potentially odd and rather confusing month when priorities seem to change almost on a daily basis. You’ll be very busy on the work scene, and although you’ll enjoy some specific thanks and accolades, this is a time when you find yourself looking at the whole concept of your working life, and wonder whether it’s time for a change – or time to just

LIBRA 23RD SEPT – 22ND OCT

October looks like being one of those months wherein you’ll be concentrating on all the practical aspects of your life. This is not to say that feelings and emotions are not important, but its things like jobs, new cars, new homes, DIY schemes etc. which seem to dominate your diary. This should also be an encouraging month financially, especially for career focused women who have some ambitions to do more, get more, have more and go further than where they are right now. In connection with this, a friend or colleague will be instrumental in either opening a door of opportunity or nudging you in the right direction. Watch for this around the 9th or 10th.

stop. Some strange psychological energies will be at play throughout October: you do not see yourself the way that other people see you, and as their vision of you is better and brighter than your own vision of yourself.

AQUARIUS

2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB

While you can’t always have the best of both worlds, October is a powerful month for financial gain and progress with jobs, businesses and careers. The 10th ,11th , and 12th may turn out to be key dates for signing contracts or finalising business deals while the 23rd , 24th , and 25th sees money that you have been owed finding its way into your bank account. With regard to relationships and romances, there doesn’t seem to be a lot happening here at the moment, so I am going to assume that all is okay and stable in this department of your life – and if it isn’t, then sorry, I got it wrong!

PISCES

19TH FEB – 20TH MAR

A fast-moving month for many Piscesians as old barriers and restrictions get swept away on a tide of new enthusiasm and determination. You make a lot of progress in consolidating recent gains, but more importantly there seems to be the birth here of new goals and targets. Where romance and relationships are concerned, you will feel increasingly secure and comfortable in the company of someone of the opposite sex, but time to take things steadily, one step at a time, in this department of your life.

ARIES 21ST MAR – 19TH APR

I suspect that October might turn out to be quite a tough month with you having to fight hard (a) to make any real progress where jobs and careers are

concerned and (b) to counter any criticisms levelled against you, especially from friends and family. You’re going to have to fight for the right to be you! You need to create a little time and space just for yourself, and although you might have your work cut out there is at least some success in achieving this in the last ten days of the month.

TAURUS 20TH APR – 20TH MAY

Rather a good month for the majority of Taureans with some encouraging news where tests and examinations are concerned (medical or academic) and a new sense of enthusiasm and commitment in relationships – be they old established unions or something relatively new and untested. An exciting month for younger members of the sign who might be starting on the first faltering steps of a career or new job, and there is a positive mood of financial independence –providing you don’t do silly things.

GEMINI 21ST MAY – 20TH JUN

October is very much a “doing” month wherein actions will always speak louder than words. You need to step back, and deal with these issues in some order of descending priority – but that might be easier said than done. Care needs to be taken with health issues and energy levels; you can’t burn the candle at both ends forever without paying a price. Some good news (14th , 15th , 16th) concerning the achievements of younger people within the family circle and a notable increase in social activity from the 23rd of the month onwards.

CANCER 21ST JUN – 22ND JUL

If you’re the “stay at home” kind of Cancerian who gets

their pleasure from stability and security and regular domestic routines, October should be a lovely month for you… But if you’re NOT then October could be boring and frustrating in equal measure. You might be in a hurry to rebuild Rome, but you’re going to have to do it one brick at a time, and those bricks need to be laid on firm foundations (and maybe it’s those foundations that need your attention right now!)

LEO 23RD JUL – 22ND AUG Not

Not the easiest of month’s for Leos. Delays and last-minute changes of plans seem to be the order of the day, and there is some confusion (and hurt) caused by people close to you changing their minds about things at the last minute. However, there is some GOOD news concerning (a) health issues (b) clarification of long term aims and ambitions and (c) the ability to put painful memories of the past behind you… And if you achieve no more than that, you will have achieved an awful lot.

VIRGO 23RD AUG – 22ND SEPT

Romantic outlook is very exciting, especially around the 7th, and there should be room for special celebrations within existing relationships and unions. Anyone involved with “saving the planet” should feel that they’re finally making some progress, and for stay-at-home Virgoes, this may be a period wherein you find some extra secret pleasures like knitting or bread-making. (Downsides could involve unreliable transport, so check timetables if you’re travelling and make sure your car is fully serviced.

Full fibre internet service provider

Quickline Communications has stepped up to provide fast and reliable broadband to thousands of homes and businesses that would otherwise have been left out of the loop.

This is part of the government’s Project Gigabit programme, helping hard-to-reach communities access lightningfast, gigabit-capable broadband. So, if you’ve had enough of a slow and intermittent internet connection, it’s worth getting in touch with Quickline.

This year the East Yorkshire based business has been awarded four Project Gigabit contracts that will see them deliver full fibre internet to almost 170,000 premises across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

In total, 360,000 rural homes and businesses in dire need of improved connectivity, will be served when adding in Quickline’s commercial build.

Among those communities are hundreds of hamlets and villages across North Yorkshire and the York area, all of which will benefit from gigabit-capable connectivity.

Quickline CEO Sean Royce said:

“The award of these contracts underlines our position as the primary Project Gigabit broadband provider in rural Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

“We have now won all four contracts we have bid for, making us the UK’s second largest Project Gigabit regional delivery partner and the only provider to

be awarded a contract serving England’s largest county, Yorkshire, under the programme.”

Positive duty to prevent sexual harassment

Senior Chartered Legal Executive, Alexander Millward, from Bridge Employment Law Ltd, answers your questions on the upcoming positive duty to prevent sexual harassment.

2 senior carers also required, experience essential and diploma in health and social care level 2. We also have two p/t vacancies for day/evening time carers and one vacancy for a senior night carer 2/3 nights per week 10pm - 8am.

Please call Angela for further information on 01904 491300 or email manager@appletreecareyork.co.uk

What is the new obligation?

The new obligation on employers is to take reasonable steps to prevent workers being sexually harassed.

When does the new obligation apply?

At present, the new obligation comes into effect in October 2024.

What do employers need to know about the new obligation?

It is important to note that whilst this is a new duty, it does not create a new stand-alone claim. Therefore, failing to comply does not, in itself, give rise to claims.

However, failing to comply can result in:-

1. the failure to comply being added to sexual harassment claims which can result in an uplift of compensation by up to 25%; and

2. the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) enforcing the duty. This may include conducting investigations and assisting or intervening in disputes.

Sexual harassment is unacceptable and so it is important to make sure that we get this duty right.

Here are some practical steps to help you start getting the duty right, before the obligation comes in:-

1. Make sure that you have a policy in place. Anti-harassment and Equality and Diversity policies are really good starting points.

2. Train your staff on the policies which should also cover what to do when there is a breach so that individuals know A) how to raise an issue when they need to and B) how to deal with a complaint. Oh, and do refresher training at appropriate intervals, once is simply not enough.

3. Treat complaints seriously, properly and thoroughly investigate them but do not have a knee jerk reaction.

4. Make sure that your ethos of non-sexual harassment, is conveyed clearly and reminded to workers prior to work events, which is where the majority of these situations arise. Remember, you can be liable for the actions of your workers.

5. Make sure that any culture of “banter” treads a careful line. It must not be discriminatory or harass people in any way. We see a lot of claims where “banter” is rife and a single comment can push you ‘over the line’.

We can help you get ready for this new obligation. If you would like a free consultation then email us at Alex@bridgeehr.co.uk and ensure that you mention the code: Your Local Link

Remembering York’s Olympians by Lucy Latham LATEST STANDINGS

Of the many things that spring to mind when people think of York, such as its beautiful architecture and its fascinating history, sport is often not one of them.

This is especially true when we think of the Olympics, as the sports that York is more widely recognised for, such as rugby league, cricket and horseracing, don’t take place at the Olympics. Nevertheless, you only have to look back into the history books to learn of the incredible contributions York’s athletes have made both nationally and internationally at the Olympics. There’s no better pace to start than with swimming. The event has been on the Olympic agenda since 1896. Since then, Team GB have won a total of 85 medals. One of York’s proudest Olympic moments came about through the legendary Anita Lonsbrough. The York-born swimmer put our area on the map during the Rome Olympics in 1960 when she shocked the world by bringing home the gold in the prestigious 200-metres breaststroke.

FUN FACT:

In the 2012 London Olympics, athletes from Yorkshire received more medals than the whole of Australia!

An iconic trailblazer for female swimmers, she also became Team GB’s first female flagbearer at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Peter Kendrew is another Yorkborn swimmer who overcame great difficulty to simply win the honour of competing for his country. He competed at the Olympics in 1964. After being disappointed to miss out on a place for the 1960 Games — controversial circumstances at the 1964 trials meant that he initially didn’t make the cut once again— and it was only when more money was raised for the team that they accepted him in the squad.

Even at the Games, Kendrew was the oldest on the Team GB swimming squad, despite only being 24.

Swimming isn’t the only sport that York Olympians have excelled at. Richard Dodds captained the GB hockey squad in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, leading them to Gold. This hadn’t even been his first Olympic medal: the team had won Bronze in the 1984 LA Olympics. Whilst he went to school in Kingston-upon-Thames, his birth in York, means we can safely claim him as one of our own!

TRAVELLING BACK TO THIS YEAR...

This time around, York Olympians have once again succeeded. Sam Dickinson —whose place in the triathlon squad at Paris 2024 meant that no Brownlee sibling would complete for the first time since 2012 — attended St Peters School in York.

When asked about why Yorkshire athletes do so well, he told the BBC: “Apparently, we’re just bred hard up here. It’s tough in the winter, it’s cold. But we just crack on with it, don’t we?’’

Climber Hamish McArthur, who went to Joseph Rowntree school, became the youngest ever member of the GB climbing squad 11 years ago at the age of 12. Now 22, he wants to ‘keep the fun’ in climbing, whilst still doing the nation (and of course us in York) proud.

Although Hamish ultimately finished just out of reach of the medals in 5th place, at 22 we’re sure he'll be back to challenge for gold in 2028.

Historical Dates and information were taken from Van Wilson’s, “It’s How You Play the Game: Olynpic Sports in York.” It was published by York Archaeological Trust in 2012.

The arrival of October properly marks our transition into the much colder and slightly darker Autumn season. We’re here with your annual reminder that it’s time to get ready, for whatever the season throws at it! Although more difficult roads are ahead, it’s nothing you can’t handle with proper preparation.

Last October the weather in York was extremely wet (as the city had an overall average humidity of around 86%!) so we ought to expect more of the same damp, cold and foggy conditions this month. Read on for our top tips to make sure the change in the season doesn’t stop you from getting to where you need to be.

CHECK THE FORECAST

Checking the weather forecast before you travel will, at the very least, lead to less driving frustrations. All drivers naturally drive more slowly in adverse or rainy conditions which leads to larger traffic queues.

IS YOUR VEHICLE AUTUMN READY?

When conditions are rainy and stormy, the number of cars on the road can increase by as much as 150%, as those who usually walk or cycle prioritise staying dry over exercise, while visibility can be as low as 60%. Checking the forecast in good time can help you determine whether it might be worth setting off with extra time, or even delaying a journey if bad weather is forecast.

INSPECT YOUR TYRES

With a higher likelihood that roads are going to be wet or covered in falling leaves, maintaining control of your vehicle becomes even more important. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.66mm, but it's safer to have more, especially in wet conditions. If you live in an area prone to early snow or freezing rain,

GADGETS

consider switching to winter tires a bit earlier this year. Also, don't forget to check your tire pressure regularly, as cooler temperatures can cause it to drop.

KEEP THINGS WELL LIT

As the sun begins to low earlier and earlier in the day, we’re once again going to have to get used to being on the dark a bit more often! What you absolutely need to be sure is working is your lights. Be sure to check all your car’s bulbs are working. The easiest way to do this is to get a friend or family member to walk around the car and keep an eye out as you try the side and taillights, headlamps, brake lights, indicators and fog lamps.

In early September, OFGEM announced that the cap will now go up as high as £1,717 per year, which works out as an increase of another 10%, compared to what we were paying between July and September. This is all taking place at the same time the government are reducing some access to Winter Fuel Allowance for older residents. So, unless we’re well prepared it could turn out to be a very difficult period for hundreds of residents.

PROOF OF THE PUDDING IS IN THE REVIEWS

When it comes to choosing a new bathroom, bedroom or kitchen, you can look at as many nice pictures as you like and do as much research as is humanly possible, but nothing tells you what your interior design experience is actually going to be like, like a review.

Well, the fantastic team at Herbert Todd and Son, certainly have more than a few positive reviews. Below are just some of the many 5 stars they’ve recently received on Trust Pilot. They don’t shout about them, so we thought we should!

One customer said, “Excellent customer service from beginning to end. We just popped in to look at a particular brand of cooker and then also discussed options for a fridge freezer. The team are extremely knowledgeable about the different brands and went out of their way to find dimensions and answer all the questions we had. We ordered a fridge freezer

for our new home, and delivery was coordinated with our move date. Arrived on time. Delivered by two very polite and efficient people. We will be ordering our cooker when ready for it and would definitely recommend this company. There are not many companies that still exist and offer this level of service.”

Nicholas said, “Richard was so patient with me, and I didn't feel pushed into buying but he gave me lots of information. Also the young men who came to fit my oven were very polite and efficient, John and his team are the best.

Wonderful customer service, I would not go anywhere else to buy my appliances.

Very kind helpful and knowledgeable, I appreciate John's help especially. Thanks so much."

The two guys Kev and Sam were fantastic, the service they delivered was outstanding. Two very polite and nice men.”

If you would like an honest, local and informed chat about your home renovation project, whether it be a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, office or media room pop into their store on Monks Cross Drive or call up on 01904 628676.

Sweet Peppers: Worth A Try?

It’s been a tricky year, none more so than in the greenhouse and polytunnels, where more tender crops have been sweltering one day and shivering the next. Dull days mean temperatures under cover often barely exceed those outside. Sunshine not only boosts temperatures under glass or polythene but quickens the ripening process. This is particularly the case for sweet peppers. Of all the protected crops I grow, these are the ones that most need sun and warmth to do really well.

Before saying more, let’s be clear which type of pepper we’re talking about. Sweet peppers, sometimes known as ‘bell’ peppers, are members of the Capsicum annuum family that also includes chillies. Sweet peppers though, lack the concentration of the chemical compound Capsaicin that gives chillies heat. Like chillies, they come in different sizes, shapes and colours. The

shape most people are familiar with is the ‘bell’, the lobed oblong type usually sold in shops. But there are other shapes, including the longer, thinner and often curved type, known as ‘bull horn’. Colour wise it’s largely traffic lights: green, orange, and red, but some are yellow and a few purple or blackish. Incidentally, it’s often assumed green peppers are a specific type or variety. This is mostly not the case. Generally a green pepper is unripe and has a somewhat bitter tang. Nearly all green peppers will eventually ripen to red, yellow or orange, the mature colour depending on the variety. They’ll then taste much sweeter which, of course, is partly why they are known as ‘sweet’ peppers.

When it comes to growing sweet peppers, ripening is the challenge. A greenhouse or some other under cover space is essential. The key to ripeness is starting as early as practicable. I sow the

first seeds in mid-February. The young seedlings are grown on in a heated greenhouse then planted into final cropping positions in an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel from late April. Several other batches are sown over the next six weeks, but any started after late March, especially in a ‘difficult’ year like 2024, will struggle to produce anything but green peppers. The fuss of raising your own seedlings can be avoided by purchasing plants. Wait until late April or early May to do this though. Young plants will sulk and often never fully recover if put in a greenhouse when days are consistently cool and dull. Greenhouse penetrating night frosts can also be fatal.

Another method of increasing the chance of ripe sweet peppers is to opt for newer F1 varieties. The seed will be more expensive but the crop should be sooner and, in all likelihood, more prolific. It can also be worth trying some of the

bull horn types. In my experience, some of these ripen faster than many of the ‘bells’. The bull horn variety Diablo is a favourite, never failing to produce three to six ripe red peppers per-plant if started by mid-March. Also, don’t be too hasty to write plants off as summer fades. Mature sweet peppers are hardier than you might think. They can continue to grow and ripen, albeit slowly, well into the autumn providing moulds and rots don’t get out of hand. I’m usually able to pick ripe sweet peppers from the greenhouse well into November.

Sweet peppers aren’t a crop for impatient gardeners, especially if you want them a ripe red, orange or yellow. But if you like a challenge, have a greenhouse and want to grow something different from tomatoes or cucumbers they’re worth a try.

York Centre for Volunteering Services estimate that in a given year, as many as 20,000 people in York involve themselves in some kind of volunteering— that’s 10% of the city’s population!

And yet, we can sometimes forget to focus on the people that make York what it is. Without the consistent hard work of so many local heroes putting aside the few spare hours they have each week so much of what makes York special would not exist.

At the same time, what we sometimes forget about volunteering is that, in many ways, it can be as life-changing for the volunteers as it is for the city and community.

A report last year by the American Heart Association concluded that “compared to non-volunteers, those who volunteers have less depression, less anxiety, higher self-esteem, higher life satisfaction, greater happiness, and a greater sense of meaning in life.” We think they sound like some attractive sounding benefits!

While we can’t promise any of the above during your first week volunteering, what is for sure is that helping others can really help you too, as it increases your social interactions and introduces you to new worlds you’d never otherwise get to see.

They do so by helping out with practical one-off jobs like changing a lightbulb or with a quick trip to the shops. They also offer isolated older people the chance to receive regular phone calls with a volunteer, and by taking people out on outings so they can socialise and participate in the community.

As a result, a lot of the support York Neighbours are able to offer relies upon the generosity of their volunteers. York Neighbours volunteers do not need to make a regular or minimum time commitment. This means it is possible for already busy people - those working fulltime, in a caring role, with a family, or those who are away a lot - to make a valuable contribution to helping older people stay independent in their own homes. Head to yorkneighbours.org.uk/ or call 01904 891 627 to begin your volunteering journey.

Volunteering doesn’t have to be a giant commitment that will take over your life, even a few hours here and there every week or month will do your community so much good.

Trick-or-Treating Advice to Protect Vulnerable

Older People

RADFIELD HOME CARE YORK

Halloween is fun, but it can be overwhelming and sometimes a scary experience for older relatives. Here are some tips to help protect and support them during trick-or-treating:

1. The ‘No Pumpkin Rule’: If neighbours haven’t put up decorations or have their lights off, it’s best to skip their house and respect their desire for a quiet evening.

2. Visit Earlier: Go trick-or-treating earlier in the evening, while it’s still light, to help reduce anxiety for older neighbours - whether you are planning on knocking on their door or not!

3. Keep the Noise Down: Encourage children to knock gently and speak softly, as loud noises can be distressing for elderly people.

4. Check on Older Neighbours: If you know an older neighbour lives alone, consider checking in on them or helping with Halloween

preparations. Equally, if the residents want to participate, suggest leaving sweets outside or getting involved in a community event.

6. Raise Community Awareness: Spread awareness in your neighbourhood about being considerate of older neighbours during Halloween.

7. Ensure Safe Lighting: Help older neighbours by ensuring their homes are well-lit and free from hazards to prevent any trips or falls if they’re welcoming trick-ortreaters.

By showing respect and compassion, we can make Halloween a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, including our older neighbours.

Poem of the month

TURNIPS AND PUMPKINS

There were lanterns in the grass on All Soul’s Day large as America. Larger than anything we possessed to contain them, they spilled from boxes and baskets like a gargantuan picnic. Even the small ones could carry a human, easily. Not willing to scare me or anyone, you would carve only smiling faces in the turnips we had. I didn’t know this was the earlier custom; farmers digging up winter turnips to make to make lamps for the gods they had buried. Dismissive of the home-grown lore, I wanted foreignness and fear. So when they land, dozens of extraterrestrial ships, I plead. But what to do with all that flesh? These days, recipes for pumpkin soups and pies are a click away but then, we

left a sunrise in the sink. You would dry the seeds though, saying they were good for me. Eventually the birds took them, in the dark.

So you gave the rind big eyes and a wide smile. No complicated carving, just a welcome face. Why the fuss? It was the week of my birthday and they were more vital than fireworks or bonfire. Drama masks that gave us only comedy for the day.

A Local Funeral Director

We also transformed the online presence of a struggling funeral director offering 17 different services. Once we redesigned their website according to Google's latest algorithms, all 17 services started ranking on Google. Today, 10 of these services are in the top 5 search results, 3 are second and 6 are ranked number one.

WHERE TO GO ON A WINTER BREAK

As we enter autumn, thoughts start turning to winter breaks and recently we have been booking everything from winter sunshine to festive city breaks. If you are thinking of getting away this winter here are five breaks to consider.

The Swiss city of Basel is located on the River Rhine. Its location means you can visit 3 countries in one day. Your can enjoy a croissant in France for breakfast, bratwurst for lunch in Germany and end your day with fondue in Switzerland!

Basel’s Christmas markets are scheduled to run from 28th November – 23rd December in 2024 and are easily accessible by air in under 2 hours; alternatively choose to take the train via Paris. For a longer trip Basel is easily combined with the city of Colmar in the Alsace region of France, a 45 minute train journey away. Here you can meander through the picturesque streets and discover six Christmas markets filled with festive stalls, enjoy the Christmas lights or head to the river and enjoy the carols being sung by local children’s choirs in the boats through the city.

Seeking a winter sun break offering local culture, white sandy beaches, amazing food and the option for some adventure? Why not consider Thailand? A trip to Thailand can be as busy or relaxed as you want it to be.

From the hustle & bustle of Bangkok with its temples and night markets to the peaceful island hideaway of Koh Yao Noi, Thailand has something to offer everyone. December daytime average temperatures are in the early 20’s in Northern Thailand and around 31 degrees further south. Choose from luxury resorts including Banyan Tree, Anantara and Six Senses or small traditional boutique properties. Looking to get in to the festive spirit closer to home? We have 2 UK self drive short breaks proving very popular. Windsor Great Park Illuminated Break – limited availability remaining on selected dates in November & December 2024 at the time of going to print.

Experience the splendour of Windsor Great Park Illuminated this Christmas, where enchanting lights, stunning projections, and majestic fountain shows transform the ancient woodland. Watch dancing light displays at Obelisk Lake then warm up with a mulled wine or hot chocolate for a truly festive experience. Also enjoy a 2 night stay and festive 3 course dinner at Gorse Hill Hotel, a charming country mansion in the fold of the Surrey landscape, just 30 minutes from Windsor Great Park.

Or Visit Blenheim Palace at Christmas – very limited availability remaining on selected dates in November & December 2024 at the time of going to print.

Discover festive delights in 2024 at Blenheim Palace! Be enchanted as you walk under twinkling starlight and admire pools of glistening light with the dazzling Illuminated Light Trail. New to 2024, wander through the Palace rooms transformed into Peter Pan's whimsical Neverland. Retire to the Mercure Thame Lambert Hotel where you will be staying on both nights, located less than 40 minutes from Blenheim Palace.

The setting for many festive films including Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone 2 & Elf, New York at Christmas is where many associate with a pre-Christmas short break.

Having experienced the run up to Christmas in the city myself I would say it is my favourite time of year, from ice skating in Bryant Park, the famous Rockefeller Christmas tree and amazing store window displays. I’d recommend taking one of the evening tours to see the Christmas lights across Manhattan & Dyker Heights.

TIME TRAVEL

Micklegate Bar

This month’s Time Travel begins on the 10th of July 1460, on the banks of the river Nene in Northamptonshire, some 152-miles from York.

This is where Richard Plantagenet, the 3rd Duke of York, captured King Henry VI in what is now recognised as one of the most important battles in the Wars of the Roses — a thirty-year period of almost constant conflict between the houses of York and Lancaster— which served as the inspiration for George R.R. Martin’s popular “A Song of Ice and Fire” books.

The Duke of York had spent about a decade seething with anger at King Henry VI for overlooking him when choosing Edward Beaufort, Duke of Somerset for the position of his main advisor.

Back in 1454, the Duke of York had attempted to restore himself to the political position he thought he deserved — by eliminating Somerset, killing him at the Battle of St Albans, taking control of the King, and making himself chief advisor— but the Lancastrian response to his violence was extreme. Richard and his allies were run out of the country and stripped of all rights to their lands and titles.

Left with no choice but to fight, Richard returned, marched on Northampton, crushed the Royal army, and captured King Henry VI. This time around Richard was no longer interested in becoming important to the King, he wanted to replace him.

The Duke of York marched on London, while flying the royal crest, and travelled straight to Parliament with his sword stretched out in front of him. He placed his hand upon the throne — an act that essentially meant he was claiming then throne for himself—then turned back to hear the response of his peers. Expecting a roaring applause, Richard was only met with an awkward silence.

In response to the embarrassment, the duke backtracked slightly. He had the king sign an Act of Accord into law. This meant that his sons, rather the King’s, would go on to inherit the throne after Henry VI’s death.

Richard’s good fortune was not to last. While he played at politics in London, his enemies were amassing.

The duke had no choice but to march north to his stronghold at Sandal Castle to meet them. On 30 December 1460 Richard rode out of the castle and saw his army completely overwhelmed by the Lancastrian horde. He and all his leading allies were either killed or executed.

This finally brings us to Micklegate Bar. My story has taken you from Northampton, to St Albans, and all the way to the Houses of Parliament, but how exactly does the iconic bar wall fit in to the tragedy of the everso ambitious Richard of York?

While he may not have made it back to the capital city of his dukedom alive, his Lancastrian enemies would be the ones to bring the pretender home — in order to play one last joke.

Richard’s decapitated head was displayed on a spike above Micklegate Bar in York with the former duke wearing a paper crown upon his head.

A crown for the king who never was…

Some fascinating and little-known facts about York.

1. WHIPMAWHOPMAGATE — York is home to the shortest street in the whole of England. It lies between Fossgate and The Shambles and is home to just three addresses. Despite its small size, Whipmawhopmagate is certainly large in stature, having been around since at least 1505! Back then it was known as Whitnourwhatnourgate” which translates to “What a Street!”

2. The city walls are the longest found anywhere in England. In sharp contrast to Whipmawhopagate, the bar walls are the biggest around stretching a full 2.1 miles. Unlike the majority of English cities with large city walls, like Edinburgh and Newcastle, when York’s great railway designer G. T. Andrews moved the station to sit in the city centre, he opted to build around the walls rather than destroying them completely.

3. The earliest settlement in York isn’t Roman! There is archaeological evidence, including polished stone axes discovered on the south bank of the river Ouse, that dates back to 8000BC. So, 8,071 years before the Romans established the city of Eboracum that would become York.

4. There’s a pub in York for every day of the year! It’s estimated that there’s at least 365 pubs in York which means that — although we absolutely don’t recommend it!— you could drink in a different spot every day for an entire year without having to repeat your steps!

From his iconic roles like Gandalf, Magneto, James Whale, and Richard III, or his position as one of our most cherished national treasures; who doesn’t love a bit of Sir Ian McKellen?

Make sure not to miss this one.

It’s a modern-day retelling of Shakespeare’s best-loved play, Hamlet Within explores a young man's psyche, as he contemplates avenging his father's death.

Even if you found Hamlet superboring in school, we reckon Sir Ian’s customary charm and charisma should be enough to tempt you to give it a try!

By drawing on expertise from actors and scholars, the film investigates the way our perceptions of Hamlet's character are shaped by history, and questions why the play has such enduring appeal across the world. An interview with:

Ghost Tour Guide NIGEL WALKER

There’s no better way to celebrate the arrival of spooky season here in York than with a ghost tour around the city! After all, York is the most haunted city in Europe! Don’t believe us? Just check out the story to your right!

In York we’re blessed to some of the finest historical and paranormal experts around, all of whom can guide you through the dark alleyways of York’s not-sonice history. This month we sat down, with one of York’s best, Nigel Walker, who runs Dark Tales of York. He’s trained in both the historical and performing arts trades, so he knows his stuff and how to tell it! Read on to learn more about Nigel, as he shares some stories from York’s ghostly past.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I'm from Bradford originally but I've lived in York for eleven years now and love the city.

I love history and ghost stories, and York has plenty of both. How did you become a ghost tour guide?

I've always liked ghost stories and history. I previously worked as an actor at the York Dungeon, on the Ghost Bus, and as a scare actor at the York Maze and Light Water Valley. I also do tours on the city sightseeing bus, so becoming a ghost tour guide was sort of a natural progression.

How long have you been doing it for?

In 2019, I'd been thinking of starting my own ghost walk but the pandemic came along and that could have been it, but to keep myself sane I started doing online tours on Facebook Live. These were popular so when we

were all allowed out I started doing walks for small groups. The rest is history.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I enjoy entertaining people and it's gratifying that some people say that I was the highlight of their visit to York.

What is York’s most haunted building?

That's debatable. The Golden Fleece says it's the most haunted pub, but there are so many haunted places in the city.

The Castle Museum has had many reports of paranormal activity as has the Black Swan Inn.

Which is your favourite ghost story?

Another tough question, but I do like to tell the story of the girl in the plague house and also the children of Bedern.

[During the Plague, a little girl was locked in a house by those who thought she was infectious. The little girl was trapped with no food and no drink, so she eventually perished. She has been seen by many passers-by staring out the window with tears running down her cheeks.

The children of Bedern are a group of about eight orphans who passed away after being mistreated by their cruel workhouse master George Pimm. It is said that the children still haunt the hallowed halls of Bedern Hall searching for Pimm.]

What’s your favourite memory from one of your tours?

During one tour a lamp went out just as I was telling a story, plunging us into darkness at just the right moment— leading to screams from the group!

Do the people on your tours ever get too scared to continue?

Not usually, but on one occasion a young girl got very creeped out and her mum had to take her away.

If they've never tried one before, why should someone go on a ghost tour for the first time?

It helps if they have an interest in the supernatural and a taste for the macabre, but even if they just want to experience an alternative to the standard historical tours and perhaps see a different side to this beautiful old city.

IS YORK REALLY EUROPE’S MOST HAUNTED CITY?

Since it was founded in 71 AD by the Romans, York has had an erratic – and often violent – history.

Micklegate and Bootham Bar, for example, despite their popularity with tourists now, were once the places where the heads of traitors were impaled in the 14th and 15th centuries. The city’s history is filled with other gory details, after all York, was the scene of one of the worst antisemitic attacks in English history, at Clifford’s Tower in 1190, and is the birthplace of Guy Fawkes, the man who very nearly blew up the Houses of Parliament! It is therefore unsurprising that vengeful spirits still roam the city.

In fact, there are supposedly 140 ghosts residing in York, who between them have made up around 500 recorded sightings. It seems as if every street has a resident ghost.

Perhaps one of the most well-known ghost stories in York took place in Treasurer’s House. In 1953, a plumber was installing a new central heating system in its cellar when he suddenly heard a horn blasting. As it got closer, a battalion of ghostly Roman soldiers appeared, descending into the space where the original Roman road used to be.

When he left the cellar, the warden simply said, “By the look of you, you’ve seen the Roman soldiers.” Whilst many academics dismiss the story, many other staff at the house

also recall hearing trumpets coming from below the cellar. Perhaps there really are Roman ghosts haunting the National Trust site…

But houses aren’t the only places that phantoms supposedly inhabit. In many of York’s haunted pubs, ghosts have been spotted by visitors. The most famous of these is Lady Anne Peckett, wife of a former Lord Mayor, who mysteriously rearranges objects and drifts elegantly up and down the staircase. Some stories are more urban legend than fact, such as the story of ‘Mad Alice’ who was hung at York Castle after being declared insane for murdering her abusive husband. Some say her face can be seen in the windows of where she once lived - but you’re more likely to see someone dressed up as her on Halloween.

It is likely we will never know whether these apparitions are real or not. But what we do know is that the International Ghost Research Foundation named York as the most haunted city in Europe, and its gory past certainly makes this seem possible.

If you’re interested in York’s ghostly and gruesome history, there are many opportunities for you to learn more, just be careful when walking at night – you never know when you might spot a ghostly spectre wandering the streets.

WE TRIED: By Sammi Minion

Shadows of York Ghost Walk

“It’s all just muscle memory really” Luke, our brilliantly insightful tour guide, tells me as he reels off story after brilliantly detailed story about York’s rich (and gory) history.

We were invited to attend one of the Shadows of York ghost tours by founder Mackenzie Crompton. Even though our tour was at the very start of September on a shockingly sunny evening — don’t worry, as if you book in for Halloween you can expect much more ominous and atmospheric weather— we were met with an irrepressible air of gothic foreboding as soon as we met our guide at the foot of the iconic St Michael Le Belfrey church, in the shadow of the Minster. As a resident of the York area for pretty much all my life, and an avid reader of history, I went into my Shadows of York experience kind of expecting to know it all.

unbelievably true methods York’s medieval folk used to try cure themselves of the plague (be warned most of them involve a fair amount of urine) or the spooky ghost tales themselves, each was delivered with charm and style.

Even the better-known stories — which I had heard bits of before— like the haunted Golden Fleece pub (apparently home to scores of spectres) or the plague ghost in Minster Yard, never felt more alive than they did through Luke’s booming voice and bottomless knowledge.

His best quality, however, was how he intercut well-known stories, like that of poor Flossy the ghost of 41-Stonegate, with some of his own real (if you believe it)

"There’s something undeniable about York’s connection to the supernatural — that isn’t going anywhere. "

Never have I been so wrong! Through tales of ghostly Roman legions, the shockingly lewd actions of the student monks of St Andrewgate, and dozens more,

experiences with the supernatural. It’s another reminder for everyone, whether you’re a ghost sceptic or believer, that there’s something undeniable about York’s connection to the supernatural — that isn’t going anywhere.

As much as I’d like to go into loads more detail about the tales Luke shared with us, I feel that the best thing I can say is that these fantastically frightening stories deserve to be heard in person in the real places where their ghosts supposedly still reside… Head to www.shadowsofyork. co.uk or call 07967460567 to book your tour in time for Halloween.

AN AFTERNOON TEA AT THE PRINCIPAL HOTEL, YORK.

If you are in the mood for a luxurious Afternoon Tea and feel that maybe queuing for one of the more really busy cafes is not your cup of tea, well read on!

We were lucky enough to be asked to review the offering at this grand, and often overlooked, hotel next to York railway station.

As you enter, you are taken into their glorious garden room by their attentive staff — which shouts luxury and class. The marble floors and high back chairs really add to the amazing décor, reminding me of what Downton Abbey must be like. We were immediately relaxed.

As we arrive, we were welcomed by our wonderful waitress, Grace, who showed us to our table right next to the window. It had a lovely view of their gardens. We were offered a glass of water before looking through their extensive menu. We were able to choose from a wide selection of teas and, if you’re in the mood, they also have some lovely Chocolateinspired cocktails and mocktails. I fancied a chocolate cocktail so opted for the Tangy chocolate orange flavor, a (not so secret) favourite combination of mine.

and adulthood if you’re a fan of the Quality Street tin!

If you have a sweet tooth, York’s Chocolate inspired tea will be just for you. From a big brioche bun filled with hazelnut and caramel, just like the iconic purple wrapped sweet in Quality Street, to the dark mint chocolate brownie, remarkably like an after eight, the cakes are simply a delight.

Since York has so much chocolate-related history I can see where executive chef Aaron Craig’s inspiration came from— The Terrys Chocolate Orange factory located next to the Racecourse, and Nestle on Haxby Road perhaps?

This very talented Chef has created some amazing chocolate flavors that take you back to your childhood days,

Our biggest debate on that afternoon, was whether to eat the desserts first, the selection of beautifully presented finger sandwiches, or the warm caramelized tarts— not a bad problem to have!

This thoughtful and unique chocolate inspired menu really makes this experience stand out and, whether for a couple or a family, it really does faultlessly cater for all.

Ben’s Book Corner

I couldn’t let October slip by without sharing some of the best horror books out there. Although horror isn’t a genre I dive into often, there's something about the spooky season that calls for a chilling read to truly embrace the Halloween spirit. So, here are some horror books that will set the perfect tone for your spooky season:

‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley – This classic is must-read. It tells the tale of a young man whose scientific experiment goes disastrously wrong, creating a monster in the process. How far will the ‘Frankenstein’ go, and what will happen when the world sees this creation? Shelley masterfully shifts perspectives between characters, keeping you engrossed from start to finish.

‘Butter’ by Asako Yuzuki – This novel is packed with undercover journalists, serial killers, and a wealthy circle of people hiding dark secrets. What seems like a typical cooking class harbours a deadly secret—the chef is a killer. An entanglement between the chef and the journalist changes the course of their lives, will they both survive this? This brilliantly crafted book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time, it’s no wonder it’s one of the most talked-about novels of 2024.

‘The Shining’ by Stephen King – Another classic horror novel that needs no introduction. Even if you haven't read the book, you’ve likely heard of the movie. Jack Torrance and his family move into a remote hotel for the winter while he works as a caretaker. But as eerie events unfold and when his son becomes possessed, the family is driven to the brink. What sinister forces are at work in this haunted hotel, and will they all make it out of this place alive? If you have read the book, then the movie is well worth the chilling watch this Halloween season.

‘Ghostly Haunts’ by Michael Morpurgo – This is one of my favourite horror reads, mainly because it’s light and easy to dip in and out of. Morpurgo has compiled a collection of short stories by various authors that will make the hairs on your neck stand on end. From ghosts and ghouls to monsters under the bed, this book is brilliant for adults, or eager young horror fans too. Each story is just the right length to give you a good scare before moving on to the next, making it perfect for picking up and putting down whenever you like.

An interview with: PAOLO DEBERNARDI

This month we sat down with acclaimed local science fiction author Paolo Debernardi to learn more about how, following an appearance on prime time show So You Think You Can Dance, the Italian-born former accountant came to become a writer here in York.

He’s since published a collection of stories called Thrumming Heart and an advice book called How to Better Manage Your Finances, both of which are available to buy from amazon.

Read on to learn a little more about Paolo.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself Paolo?

First of all, my name is Paolo Debernardi and I was born in Italy but I’ve now lived in the UK for 26 years. I’ve lived in Glasgow and Gloucester, but York is my favourite city.

While here, I went to “Go To Dance” [2012 Sky One programme hosted by Kimberley Wyatt] and then finally I managed to get to Britain’s Got Talent in 2016. During that time, I also did some movies as well, so it’s been a very interesting life!

I’ve also been writing as well becuase I like creating stories. I started out by reading Hemingway which really got me inspired. From there I’ve really began to discover my own style, and I liked creating characters.

How would you describe yoiur writing style?

First of all, let me say that I’m no Hemingway and I don’t like to compare myself with other authors, but through him I’ve learned that you can do your own style.

You can see from my stories— you don’t know what’s going on. I tend to give a little information, it’s like a jigsaw, you don’t know what going on until the end.

I spoke to a medium many years ago and she said to me, I’ve actually got a spirit that can inspire me to write. And I think, even though I’m 50-years-old, I’m still a little bit like a kid as well, in

that way I’ve got a little bit more imagination and when you’ve got imagination you can do anything.

Can you tell us more about Thrumming Heart?

I chose the title Thrumming Heart because all of the stories, they make your heart beat faster. I don't want to scare people too much, but I wnat [my readers] to live a little bit on the edge!

I try to create an image and an atmosphere so that when people read my story they are transported to a new environment.

If our readers could learn one thing from either your writing or your own story, what would you like it to be?

That you can be a better version of yourself, no matter where you are right now you can change. You can turn your dreams into reality, one of my dreams was being on Britain’s Got Talent — and I’ve done that. Another of my dreams was to have my writing published — and I’ve done that. Anything is possible in life as long as you’re determined.

You can watch a dramatic reading of one of the chapters of Thrumming Heart on by Paolo's YouTube channel by scanning the QR code below. It was produced for Paolo by the team here at Your Local Link!

A SHORT STORY

SAFE HOUSE

Cars sped past. “What better place for a safe house?” the policewoman had asked. No passers-by or curtain twitchers, just an old cottage on the A64, marooned by traffic.

Now the waiting was ending. Tomorrow she would be in Court. And when the trial was over her new life would begin. Janette Johnson would be no more, replaced by Ruthie Desmond, with passport and flight and a Melbourne address. Janette would be remembered only as the mousey girl in Accounts who was brave – or foolish - enough to cause one of the biggest fraud investigations in a decade. Not even a mysterious fire at her flat could dissuade her. ‘Brave little accountant’ the papers had called her.

She didn’t feel very brave now. Sighing, she went downstairs to make yet another cup of tea. She would have liked to go into the back garden but even between its hedges she wouldn’t be safe. A drone could spot her from above. So she prowled about the house while the kettle boiled, re-examining the treasures she had found: a pencil on the sideboard, a shampoo sachet in the bathroom, a hairpin on the dresser. To her delight she found another, a sliver of mirror behind the clock. It must have been wiped clean of DNA then deliberately left. The Leavings, as she called them, had probably started accidentally when a cleaner failed to clean, then been picked up as a comforting idea. What could she leave that would say something about herself?

Suddenly the front doorbell rang. In terror she froze. “Pizza!” a male

voice called. “Pizza delivery!”

Hardly daring to breathe she remained silent.

“Pepperoni pizza for one,” the voice called again.

For an instant Janette was tempted. She was sick of the microwave meals left for her. Then she told herself not to be foolish.

“Whatever you do, don’t open the door,” her Minder had warned.

“Not till you get my code on your mobile, and know it’s me.”

The doorbell rang again, louder. Still Janette waited silently. Finally she heard footsteps leaving the porch and a motorbike revving. For another five minutes she listened, then crept to the window and peeped between the blinds. There was nothing but traffic. Shaky with fear, she sat on the sofa. Had the man made a genuine mistake or did the Syndicate know she was there? Shivering, she took refuge in sleep.

Dusk was settling in the room when she was woken by her phone buzzing. Urgently Janette grabbed it and saw the call sign. Then she waited as the Minder let herself in.

“How have you been?” the woman asked.

At once the words came spilling out - how the doorbell had rung and rung - how she had hidden in the shadows hardly daring to breathe…

“Hmm,” the policewoman said coolly. “Could be a genuine mistake or a bit of a problem. Not to worry. You’re leaving tonight. Tomorrow you give your evidence. Then you’ll be on your way.”

“Where?” Janette asked.

“To your new life. How do you do - Ruthie?”

An interview with:

Local singer LIV QUIGLEY

Meet Liv. Now on the back of the release of her third single, the 27-year-old is one of York’s rising musical stars.

Her progress as a singer has taken place despite Liv having to overcome struggles with anxiety over performing, and the impact of some really nasty comments from online bullies.

However, thanks to some amazing support from the educational support charity United Response, through Andy Bowen who is one of their educational job coaches, Liv's been able to overcome those issues. With Andy's help, she's began to record her own music in a proper professional recording studio, and has performed her first ever “noisy pub” gigs, at The Pab Bar on Castlegate.

Andy says the biggest development he’s seen in Liv is that “she’s now in control of her own destiny.” This is due to an “immeasurable” growth in her confidence.

Last month Liv released another new single called “Young Dumb and in Love”. We sat down with her to learn a little bit more about her journey and the new song.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself Liv?

I’m Liv Quigley, I’m a singersongwriter from York. I started singing when I was four and really grew up around a lot of music because Mum and Dad would always have music on in the car. So, I had a lot of different influences from Rock and Disney, to 80s music!

What age were you when you decided that this was what you wanted to do with your life?

I was probably about 19 or 20. I had been in college doing animal management and I was in my final year of doing that and I said to my mum “I don’t think I want want to stick to this, I want to make music instead.” So I went to music college.

How did you come to start releasing your own music?

It was when I started working with Andy at United Response. He’s helped me gain my confidence in writing my won songs and putting

them on Spotify. Before that, I felt that I wasn’t any good at writing songs and I used to doubt myself a lot.

I’ve been working with Andy on a 1-1 basis and he’s been helping me record and produce my songs. He’s shown me how to use the recording studio with all the equipment. He’s really shown me that you can follow your own path and find your own way to becoming successful. You don’t need to get a record deal.

What message do you what your music to tell your listeners?

Not long before I wrote “Somebody” [one of Liv’s previous singles] I started getting people being quite unpleasant online, writing stuff going oh, you’d be better if you lost weight. I wanted to write a song that says to people — you don’t need to change who you are. You just need to be yourself.

Can you tell us about your new song “Young Dumb and in Love”?

It’s about a previous relationship I had with someone and that feeling of looking back and thinking “Oh, what an idiot I was to have been with this person.”

Probably a lot of people can relate to it, it’s uplifting and it’s got great catchy feel to it!

You can listen to Liv’s music on her YouTube channel by scanning the QR code here:
