Computing for Work ................................. 10

Welcome to our new Autumn 2020 brochure, packed full of exciting courses, which for this term will mostly be delivered online. The last few months have been challenging, different and difficult for all of us and we hope you are well and have kept safe. Over this period, we offered a variety of free online courses which we hope you took advantage of to help keep your bodies and minds active. Our autumn offer continues with a wide range of exciting courses to stimulate your interest and keep to our good standards as recognised by Ofsted. Our learners have enthusiastically and overwhelmingly confirmed that our online provision has been very good during these difficult months.

Counselling ............................................... 13

As the country is now facing uncertain times in terms of employment, we thought we would change the brochure order around to start with the skills section. These courses will boost your work skills and employment prospects. Employers are looking for people with good communication skills, who can manage calculations and mental maths and actively engage with modern computers, and therefore have the skills to learn new systems. You will also find information here about courses offered by other providers across the city. We hope you find something to enjoy whilst learning new skills and look forward to welcoming you to one of our courses. Our creativity & leisure programmes start on page 21.

We love to hear from you about your experiences... Find us online and tag your posts #yorklearning for a chance to be featured on our website.

Managing Stress for Me and My Family

Not sure about using

?

The online course has enabled me to focus on Italian more than I would have done alone. Zoom works well and it’s great to see my friends and interact with everyone. I like the screen sharing, too. Jacopo is very good at sending links to material we use/have used on line and he also sends us additional material for interest.

Keeping in touch with fellow sewers, sharing our makes/info on Google Classroom, Demos from Kate, online fashion show using photos etc. Thank you for all the effort you are making to help us stay in touch.

It’s been FABULOUS. Nice to see and chat with other people who I have met previously, encouraging me to continue painting, giving me ideas, encouraging in general, just been great.

I really enjoyed the Dancerise. Jean is fantastic. She takes it at a pace I can follow and it is most enjoyable although the legs feel a bit stiff today!

Courses for

Art & Creativity Art, Craft, Dressmaking, Photography, Creative Writing, Cookery

We have moved onto Zoom and are continuing to deliver a broad, diverse range of courses throughout the autumn.

We have a brand new range of opportunities, such as sculpting hares (in air drying clay), art-creating wellbeing and sashiko embroidery, running alongside our traditional favourites including painting & drawing, pattern cutting & creative watercolours. Your favourite courses have been revamped. Many are shorter and most have the advantage of online gallery resources to support you between sessions, giving greater opportunities to share and discuss your work.

It’s important for us to foster and develop our creative community. Our Online classes have received rave reviews. They have not only enabled us to continue practicing our skills, but they’ve also allowed us to partake in the wider benefits of learning, such as being part of a support network of like-minded people and the chance to keep a regular weekly routine.

What can you make out of old clothes, scraps of fabric or household items? Earlier this year we challenged learners to create something new from their own denim clothes, and they sent us their skirts, flower pots, bags, hats, and soft toys. Now, we challenge you to make soft toys (or other re-makes if you like?) from your old clothes or household items. Be creative! Send us your photos at york.learning@york.gov.uk, or use @ yorklearning on twitter or instagram, and we’ll pick a winner who will recieve a Gift Token. You can also join us for our short textiles parent and child workshops. Each workshop runs for 2 sessions of 2 hours, so that there is time to work between sessions. We’re unable to run our usual Santa’s Socks project this year, but you can donate to the same charities by going to: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/KateUnsworth2. This divides the money raised between both York Foodbanks and IDAS. 25

Further information about our courses and services Cost of our courses All of our courses are individually priced due to several factors: • varying course hours; • the numbers that can attend; • and/or specialist facilities or venues. For many of the courses you will see 3 prices: • first is the full price that most people will pay • second is for those who are in receipt of State Pension. • third is for those claiming certain benefits including Universal Credit, although this is not an automatic justification for a reduced fee due to the nature of how it is calculated. Please ring 01904 554277 for clarification and support or go to yorklearning.org.uk/policies and look at the fee policies under booking a course. You are required to show evidence of a reduced fee entitlement within two weeks of enrolment. If you fail to do this we may cancel your place.

Can I spread the cost of the course fee?

It is important to understand that direct debit is not a method of paying for part of the course – just a way of spreading the full cost of the course over a number of months.

Can I get any help with course costs? We understand that for some people the cost of an adult learning class can be a barrier to attendance. At times we might be able to help with course costs including travel, books, materials or if appropriate, childcare. Please ring 01904 554277 to see if you’re eligible for support.

Examination fees All exam and registration fees are included in the cost of a course unless stated otherwise. However, if you complete a course and are unsuccessful in your final exam we will ask you to pay an additional fee to re-sit the exam.

Refunds

A full refund will be given under the following circumstances: • The course time or date changes after you’ve signed up and you can no longer attend. • The course closes because there are insufficient numbers on the Please note that once a direct debit is started course. you cannot cancel it without confirming with us • You signed up over the phone or via our that this is ok.
