Courses for Autumn & Winter 2017
LEARN EXPERIENCE
DISCOVER For more information or to book a course visit: www.yortime.org.uk
Welcome! Welcome to the new Autumn/ Winter brochure packed full of courses for September onwards. We are bringing you lots of new courses alongside some well established and popular ones. We have reorganised the brochure a little this time around, improving the layout and adding some new sections. Most of the courses that could be described as “ learning for pleasure”, are in the first half of the brochure with those more “skill based”, including those useful for work, organised toward the end. We have a big section in the brochure for those looking to improve their English and maths, and also a section for those wishing to learn and understand the digital world. We really hope that you are able to join us for one of our courses. We love to hear from you and your experiences with us. We find social media is a great way to enable you to give us feedback and for us to respond. If you have enjoyed your course then send us a message or share a photo and let us know. You can find us at the following sites.

Santa’s Socks Community Crafts project
Sew Knit Crochet Up-Cycle Felt Stitch
What it is! York Learning’s autumn Community Crafts project is fast becoming an annual event! Santa’s Socks is now in its third year! Our learners & members of the local Community sew, craft, appliqué, knit and crochet Christmas stockings that, once completed, will be filled with sweets and distributed through York Food banks, IDAS (the Independent Domestic Abuse Service) and other local York Homeless charities. Last year, we collected & filled over 700 stockings!
How can I get involved? Make a stocking – either on your own, or as part of a group. Each stocking should be no more than 35cm long and 20cm wide if possible. Lots of templates are available on the internet, we don’t mind which you use – as long as your stocking matches our dimensions. Send in some of your photos both during and after making and we’ll pop them on twitter and Facebook to inspire others.
Join
Completed stockings need to be dropped off at the York Learning desk at West Offices, Station Rise, York YO1 6GA or at your local York Library by the 24th November.

Family learning Works! Family Learning workshops and courses are for adults who want to support their children’s learning and develop their own skills too. You’ll make friends, gain confidence and work towards qualifications. But most importantly, you’ll have fun!
We did a session learning about phonics which I’ve never really understood or thought was important. My little boy is at the age of learning these. After the session I went home and showed him my work and sat and helped him. He seemed more interested and willing to try, knowing that I was doing it too. (How Children Learn to Read and Write)
Doing my maths course has given me confidence to attempt homework with my children which before I wouldn’t entertain it.

r u o t u o b a n io t a m r o Further inf s e ic v r e s d n a s e s r cou Cost of our courses All of our courses are individually priced to take account of a number of factors including course hours, the maximum attendance or the need to use specialist facilities or venues. For many of the courses you will see three prices. The first is the full price which most people will pay, the second is for those who are claiming the state pension and are unwaged and the third for those individuals who are claiming Universal Credit. Please note that you will be required to produce evidence that you are entitled to a reduced fee within 1 week of signing up for the course. If you fail to do this we may cancel your place on the course.
Can I spread the cost of the course fee? Our easy payment methods to help you spread the cost are available on all courses over £100. This is done via direct debit and is generally 4 payments spread over 4 months. On occasion we are able to set up payment schedules over a longer period of time but this cannot extend beyond the end date of a course. Please note: Once a direct debit is set up you must not cancel it unless you have been in contact with us first and we have confirmed that it is alright to do so. If you cancel without our permission you will immediately be invoiced for the full amount. It is important to understand that direct debit is not a method of paying for part of the course, just a way of spreading the full cost of the course over a number of months.
62
Can I get any help with the cost of a course? We understand that for some people the cost of an adult learning class can be a barrier to attendance. In some circumstances we might be able to help with assistance towards the cost of the course, travel to the course, books, materials and childcare. You should note that this support is limited and is not available on all courses. Please ring 01904 554277 to find out if you might be eligible for support.
Examination fees All exam and registration fees are included in the cost of a course unless stated otherwise. However if you complete a course and then are unsuccessful in the final exam we may ask you to pay an additional fee to resit the exam.
Refunds A full refund will be given under the following circumstances: • The course time or dates change following you signing up and it is no longer convenient for you to attend. • The course closes because there are insufficient numbers on the course. • You signed up over the phone or via our online booking system and change your mind within 14 days of the booking. Please note this does not apply if the course starts within the 14 day period or if the course has already started when you book. In all other circumstances we only offer a refund
Remember – more detailed course information about York Learning courses is available online at www.yortime.org.uk
in exceptional circumstances. Once a course has started we cannot offer any refunds. This is because the course fee contributes to funding that makes the course viable. All refunds offered in exceptional circumstances will be subject to a ÂŁ15 administration fee.
Supporting you to sign up for the right course It is important to us that you find a course that is suitable for you. If you are unsure whether a course is suitable then please contact us and we can either advise you over the phone or arrange for a one to one appointment. Where there are several different levels of a course it is best to contact us to discuss which level would suit you. Some of our courses including English and maths and some computer courses require you to take an assessment prior to starting the course. This is to ensure you are on the correct course.
Support to enable you to attend a class If you think you might need support to attend a class then please get in touch with us before signing up. This is particularly important if you have specific disabilities that might require us to make specific adjustments or if you have a learning difficulty which might affect your ability to complete some of the programme. If you are in any doubt then please contact us on 01904 554277.
Booking a place on a York Learning course Some of our courses fill up very quickly. This is because our policy is to offer current students, who have attended for the previous term, priority booking. We also offer 24 hour advance priority booking to learners who sign up for the newsletter, (see page 3 for details).
01904 552806
Equal opportunities York Learning welcomes learners from all backgrounds and is committed to providing the best possible experience for everyone. We aim to make sure you can learn in a safe, comfortable and non-threatening environment that is free from discrimination. Our goal is to support everyone to achieve their potential and to enjoy their programme. We will not tolerate behaviour that deliberately discriminates, intimidates or disrupts other learners and will take appropriate action to ensure this does not occur.
Compliments, feedback and complaints We love to hear from our learners about how they have found their experience with us. You can do this in a variety of ways including directly via social media, by contacting us via email or by visiting our website. On most courses you will be invited to provide feedback via an end of course questionnaire and we find this feedback very useful. From time to time we get things wrong and this leads to a complaint. We aim to resolve all complaints quickly and with the minimum of stress and upset. It helps if complaints are brought to our attention immediately so that we are able to quickly resolve them. However we recognise that occasionally the nature of a complaint requires a more formal process. If this is the case you will be guided to our complaints procedure which can be found on our website.
