April Fools Welcome to another jam-packed issue of your favourite magazine that costs you nothing but a quick bend down to pick it up from the doormat. Good price that. While you might be gearing up to gorge yourself on chocolate (both for Easter and also the York Chocolate Festival this month) we’ve been too busy creating one of our best mags ever. And, to be honest, we’re all a bit surprised we managed it at all.

As you know, last month our Accountant Helen fell off her scooter and broke her wrist. Since then we’ve been eagerly watching her progress, first as the cast was removed, then as she started to get some movement back in her hand. The ups and downs of life as seen by our very own (very) grumpy, (almost) old woman

Go g,o

We recently got a new gadget. It’s called an Apple TV, and our future son-in-law talked us into getting it. Apparently it was supposed to improve our lives no end.

gadget

After two weeks in the house, we hadn’t noticed any significant changes. The Apple TV didn’t switch on the dishwasher, take the bins out or sort the recycling, which are the things that would enhance our domestic harmony most. It didn’t replace the cracked bath panel, either.

its many uses. ‘You can watch loads of extra TV channels,’ he said.

I don’t particularly want to see a blurry selfie of my sister and me downing Mojitos in 37 inch HD.

As far as I could see, all it did was give us another remote control to lose down the back of the sofa (and this one was really tiny – I nearly mistook it for a licquorice allsort and ate it the other day).

We currently have about 4000 channels on our TV. Even allowing for the 3500 that are dedicated entirely to showing reruns of Friends and Last Of The Summer Wine, that’s still more TV than any normal human being can watch without their eyeballs melting.

Our future son-in-law tried to explain

The son-in-law tried again. ‘You can

Yes, but why? We already have a facility for playing music. In our house we refer to it as the stereogram, which causes much hilarity in anyone under 40. And as for viewing my photos – that may be fine for people to show off their excellent images of sunsets, but I don’t particularly want to see a blurry selfie of my sister and me downing Mojitos in 37 inch HD. The son-in-law spent another half an hour explaining how useful and lifechanging the Apple TV was. Strangely, he didn’t mention stirring one’s tea with the remote, which was about the best use I’d found for it. Finally, he gave up. ‘Well, I think it’s brilliant,’ he said. ‘I’ve been wanting one for ages.’ And now he’s got one. Which was probably what he’d planned all along. The Apple TV is now relocated to London, where the future son-inlaw is probably at this very moment synching it to all his other gadgets so he can stream movies through the plughole while he’s in the shower, or something. As for us, now we’ve sold our pointless gadget, we can buy a new bath panel. Result.

synch it to your phone and your iPod,’ he said. ‘That means you can play your music through it and view your photos on your TV screen.’

Donna... Hot

My winter wardrobe. Is it spring yet? Yes, I know the bulbs are blooming and the clocks are about to go forward, but my wardrobe is still in the depths of winter. And you can bet as soon as I decide to brave it and pack away the jumpers and boots, we’ll be plunged into a freak April ice age. I’m going to play it safe until at least July. So if you see someone sweltering down Coney Street in a parka, that’ll be me.

Not

Pointless loops on clothes. Does anyone know what those long loops of ribbon you find inside the shoulders of jumpers and tops are for, exactly? They’re always snaking their way out of my neckline at unfortunate moments. If I cut them out, I worry I’m accidentally going to cause the sleeves to fall off, or the whole garment to unravel. If someone could enlighten me as to their purpose, I might be more inclined to put up with them.

Starsign of the month... Aries

(21st March - 19th April)

here are a few famous faces you share your sign with

April gets off to a flying start with special celebrations and exciting travel aspects that tie in with some long standing ambitions. Romantic relationships seem to be secure and harmonious (especially well established unions) but for them to remain so, it’s important not to drag up old negative problems from the past. Also, if you are tempted to break a promise, even a very small promise, you’re strongly advised not to do so. This could be seen as something much more significant by a lover/partner or other third party. On the work scene this would not be a good month to go in search of promotion or any kind of extra career responsibility. Instead take your time and build securely on existing foundations, consolidating rather than expanding. If colleagues and workmates think they know better, let them get on with it, and as sure as night follows day, someone will come a cropper. You won’t have to say “I told you so” to make your point and there is some dignity in silence. Towards the end of the month, say from the 23rd onwards, some compromises and sacrifices you have made in the past now start bearing fruit and bringing some rewards, which just goes to show that patience, even if it has been forced upon, is a virtue.

CANCER

LEO (23rd July - 23rd August)

(20th April - 20th May)

(21st May - 20th June)

(21st June - 22nd July)

April is always a restless month in the House of Taurus and this year is no exception, even though an itch will be scratched by some travel opportunities that tie in nicely with business aspects or career ambitions. Perhaps an opportune month for romance, but also a very dangerous one if you bite off more than you can chew.

Excellent money month with specific advantages falling in your favour on the 6th and the 17th. Doors which have been closed now start creaking open and there is a process of change in place which really works well. Overseas links are strong and family relationships are enhanced. Pregnancies, births and christenings!

Some emotional disappointment during the first week is counterbalanced by some financial gains between the 7th and the 14th. The 15th through to the 22nd is important for communications on all levels and the receipt of privileged (secret?) information. Family affairs dominate the last week of the month.

If someone is promising you fabulous things, take their words with a pinch of salt and measure them by their actions. It’s a good month for all property aspects, especially if you’re selling for profit. You need to be critical in your judgement around the 22nd and don’t put any money on the table until someone meets you half way.

14

(24th August - 22nd September) No quick decisions and no knee jerk reactions if things do not immediately fall into place. Travel aspects are quite strong between the 15th and 21st and there is a need to consolidate your strengths during the last week when other people will be looking to you to take the lead.

LIBRA (23rd September- 22nd October) An emotionally rewarding month on two different levels. You’ll be feeling very satisfied with the conduct of a romantic relationship (especially a relatively new one) and you will also find yourself in a strong position to help other people sort out some of their emotional problems and dramas.

scorpio (23rd October - 21st November) You’ll go against some of the advice you are being given at this time and will be behaving very impulsively. I say “bravo” because this is precisely the energy that needs to be released to get you to where you want to be. There are some very strong money vibes during the last two weeks!

sagittarius (22nd November - 21st December) You need to let things go and find new targets and ambitions; looking backwards when you should

be looking forwards is not very productive. Thoughtful decisions will be made carefully between the 1st and the 11th and then changed and modified between the 13th and 17th. Don’t be afraid to change!

the best of york

VIRGO

Capricorn (22nd December - 19th January) If you’re not sure where to go or what to do, follow the leadership or advice provided by a lover/ partner or very close friend. Young Capricorn ladies can look forward to new relationships with mature males who know what they want… and more importantly, who also know what their ladies want!

aquarius (20th January - 18th February) A dangerous time for Aquarians who are looking for romance and who will pay any price to find it… alas, they might find that the price is a little too high! Do not keep all your eggs in the same basket. If in doubt, concentrate on careers and business aspects, where success is more likely.

PIscES (19th February - 20th March) If you are looking for change, then you’re going to find it. If, however, you find yourself resisting change, this might be an up-hill month filled with challenges and obstructions. Sooner or later you’ll wake up to the idea that a few changes could be very much to your advantage.

Incredibly, it’s been 40 years since Ebor Morris, York's premier and internationally admired Morris Dancing troupe, first performed way back in 1974. Time Travel

Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing.

Truly one of York's hidden gems, the Cemetery (the one, appropriately, on Cemetery Road) has been the final resting place for many York people since it opened in 1837. However, due to a closure that lasted nearly 20 years and led to the site becoming overgrown and run down, the cemetery is often overlooked. Thankfully these days the site is once again a working cemetery, an event venue and a treasure trove of historical titbits.

York Cemetery

Factoids • The Cemetery was opened in 1837 following the closure of the city-centre church graveyards. • The neo-classical chapel is a Grade II* listed building and was designed by the same man that created the Assembly Rooms, James Pigott Pritchett (who was buried in the cemetery). • Railway tycoon George Leeman (of, among other things, Leeman Road-fame) is buried here, as are several members of the chocolate dynasty Terry family.

There might have been 123,000 people buried at York Cemetery... but who was first? After a bit of searching it is possible to find the grave of Charlotte Hall, daughter of Thomas Fishburn Hall, who died in 1837 aged 25. As the inscription on her headstone says, she was "the first transplanted into this garden of death." Charlotte was buried by what was then the very edge of the new cemetery, which seems like an odd choice considering her family had the pick of the entire site. However in 1837 there would have been no trees and no surrounding buildings, meaning the grave plot would have had a clear view over the city and the Minster. She was joined in the same grave by her mother in 1847 and by her father in 1860.

At the centre of the cemetery, standing at a point from which many of the paths and grassy walks radiate, is the chapel. Modelled after the temple of Erectheus in Athens, James Pigott Pritchett designed it to be the most desirable place in the cemetery for the richest of York’s Victorian citizens to inter their loved ones. However, it was so expensive to be buried in the catacombs below the chapel that only 17 people were ever laid to rest down there.

18

• The cemetery was closed in 1966 and everything of value was striped and sold. The buildings and monuments become overgrown and were perpetually targeted by vandals. • In 1984 the roof of the chapel collapsed, prompting the formation of The York Cemetery Trust. The Trust took over the site in 1987 and restoration work began. • People are once again being buried at the cemetery which, according to the detailed records kept on site, now contains more than 123,000 burials.

Discover your roots

Although the majority of the cemetery is crammed with headstones and monuments of all shapes and sizes, you might be forgiven for thinking there are wide open areas yet to see burials. However these open areas, such as the one in the photo, are referred to as 'public graves', meaning there are often dozens of people buried there. As burial was often very expensive, the poorest people would not have been able to afford private plots. Therefore the Cemetery Company would open a large grave and charge a small fee to place deceased in them. Although the largest public grave could accommodate up to 50 bodies, they were quickly filled after just two weeks - such was the level of illness and disease during the Victorian era.

The cemetery records have kept details of everyone who has ever been buried there, stretching back to 1837. The Friends of York Cemetery offer a one-on-one service whereby, with their help, you can search the database of names and burials to discover your ancestors and also find their graves. You can pop in to see them at the cemetery every Friday, or visit www.yorkcemetery.org.uk/ genealogy

While the forthcoming feature film Bill is being filmed in York Minster, we chat to Executive Producer and Head of Investments of Screen Yorkshire, Hugo Heppell. “York is an extraordinary place,” says Hugo. “It is one of the most visited places in the country – and the most beautiful city – but doesn't show up in film or TV all that much. I'm trying to change that.”

One might say that Hugo, who decides what film and TV production company Screen Yorkshire spends its hard earned money on, is biased. “I'm from York originally. In fact I was born in Fulford Maternity Hospital...

which I now think is the designer outlet. Although Screen Yorkshire head office is based in Leeds, I'm always interested in projects that take place in York.”

Paying the Bill Currently in production is one such project. Bill tells the story of William Shakespeare in a way that you might not have ever heard. The comedy, which is being filmed all over York

Screen Yorkshire is also currently working on the screen adaptation of the acclaimed novel Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. “That's a very exciting project,” says Hugo, “and as production times are much quicker for TV, it will be aired this year in the Autumn. It'll be nice to see it as it will be filmed almost entirely in and around York.” York's leading role With a Yorkie at the helm of Screen Yorkshire, can we expect a lot more films and TV programmes being filmed here? Hugo hopes so: “It's surprising that cities like Manchester are a lot more famous – or rather appear more in films – than the likes of York. It's all about building up a head of steam to get people aware of and talking about the project. Fortunately TV is much quicker.”

film makers and investing money in promising local productions... again and again York is considered to be our jewel in the crown, our most valuable asset. So much can be filmed there. It strikes me every time I visit the city and get off of the train to see the walls and the Minster in the background. I get a really special and inspiring feeling from it.” So what's next? “Lots of exciting things are in the pipeline – some of which will focus on York as a backdrop. we take a look at the life of one of York’s most famous sons

spotlighton:

TempestAnderson

This month we look at one of York’s great unsung Victorian heroes; photographer, volcanochaser and adventurer Tempest Anderson. Unfortunately he was unavailable for an interview.

Who? Name: Tempest Anderson 6, Born: 7th December 184 York Red Sea Died: 26th August 1913, ly Known for: Taking ear the g photos of York, travellin and world, climbing mountains studying volcanoes.

24

Lifelong adventure Surely the winner of the coolest first name in history contest, Tempest Anderson was born in Stonegate in 1846. His interesting name actually comes from the Tempest family who were very important in West Yorkshire at the time and who were friends of his father, a noted local doctor. Tempest attended St. Peter's School, but unlike the school's other famous pupil, he decided not to pursue a career in gunpowder plotting, instead opting to go to University College in London and learning all about the human eye. He returned to York soon after graduating and began working for his father's medical practice and also at York County Hospital - today the big apartment building by Sainsbury's.

Tempest was also the first person in the city to own a telephone, which means he could have answered it legitimately with: “Hello, this is York.”

Geology rocks But it was his love of the natural world that made Tempest famous. He began taking adventurous excursions to exotic and remote

From 1883 onwards all of Tempest’s adventures involved visiting and studying volcanoes. It was said that he kept two bags permanently packed in his bedroom (one with warm weather clothes, the other with cold weather clothes) so he could dash off at a moment’s notice when there was news of an eruption. He climbed Mounts Vesuvius, Etna and Stromboli in Italy before trekking up dangerous peaks on Iceland, in Mexico and also in the West Indies. It was on the island of Martinique in the summer of 1902 that Tempest witnessed the dramatic and devastating effects of the massive eruption of Mont Pelée. Explosive shots Tempest took some incredible photographs of the eruption of Mont Pelée and he soon became known as one of the leading amateur photographers of York. He even invented and built a special revolving lens for his cameras, something that Kodak couldn't produce themselves for many years. A great deal of the old photographs that document York during 19th and early 20th centuries were taken by Tempest and he soon become a leading figure within

the city – especially at his beloved Yorkshire Philosophical Society, of which he was President at the time of his death.

places; walking tours of the Alps, meeting the Native American tribes of the USA and even travelling as far as Hawaii. During these trips his interest in geology grew, especially where volcanoes were concerned.

His last trip abroad was in 1913 when Tempest journeyed to Indonesia to photograph the eruption of volcano Krakatoa on Java. He became very sick of heat apoplexy and a fever on his voyage home and unfortunately never made it back to York. Tempest died on board the ship and was buried at Suez in Egypt. Coco and the Butterfields started out in 2011 as a folk trio. As time has gone on they became more of a colourful and energetic act performing their own mix of pop, folk and hip hop. In 2012 they won the title of the UK’s best unsigned act. You don’t want to miss out on these guys.

This month, Krystal tells us why she’s choosing poached eggs over chocolate ones...

openunifreshers So last month I began a degree in English Literature with the Open University and it was my Fresher’s week! I bet you can imagine it now, meeting new friends, going out and getting drunk, playing ridiculous games and living off pot noodles. Well, it turned out a little differently than expected. Open Uni is

something you do at home on your own. So far, I have mastered the art of making banana pancakes, had two afternoon naps, walked the dogs and created a whole clan of imaginary friends who are just absolutely crazy. She says: “A team of highly qualified assessors will work with you and your apprentice to ensure you both have great quality training and support. We’ll undertake regular reviews to ensure your apprentice is on track and you the employer are fully informed.”

“We have business development advisers who will work with you to establish exactly what your business’s needs are, and take the headache out of things like funding, which can be a bit puzzling at first.” York College’s Business Development Unit (BDU) is just what your business needs to take the hard work out of finding, and recruiting, an apprentice. work done. I’m currently studying Cleopatra and let me tell you, my heart bleeds for the woman. From a personal point of view the poor girl’s getting judged for her appearance and made out to be a bit of a tart. Like they say, the people who win the battles get to write the history, and I’ve had enough of those bloody Romans making poor Cleeclee out to be a psychopathic huntress. Maybe she was a lovely lady whose wit and charm intimated fully grown men… just throwing it out there.

With temptation round every corner sometimes will power alone isn’t enough to cut it, once everyone’s done with demolishing the Easter eggs for breakfast, it’s then time to face the large Easter Sunday dinner with all the trimmings. Try saying no to a Yorkshire pudding, still high off the sugar in the chocolate you consumed for breakfast – impossible! At the end of it all we’ll go home and get a bit peckish around 7pm but luckily there’s some sausage rolls on the side, oh and a bottle of wine in the fridge too. Come Monday morning it’s all just a distant memory with the reminder of what we’ve done appearing in the form of numbers on those dreaded scales. So anyway, have a lovely April; if you want me I’ll be hibernating under a bed of salad until May comes.

Easter is upon us, and the onslaught of chocolate Easter eggs and pancakes have been coming from all directions. Now I’m currently a member of a diet club, trying to lose the weight I put on over Christmas (the last three Christmasses to be precise). And I’d like to know whose idea it was to celebrate Easter with chocolate, because this guy/gal has got some answering to do. Pretty inconsiderate of them to not think about us poor dieters who face the daily challenges of fast food, high sugar drinks and chocolate already out there without a whole day being dedicated to it. I want answers and please can I get an Easter rehabilitation programme across

World in motion

How would you spend it?

I thought April Fools had come early when someone recently told me that he thought England could win the World Cup. Then again, he also said he thought First York buses had competitive prices. I don’t know what has swayed a few optimistic opinions regarding the England team finally breaking the hoodoo going back to 1966 – which, let’s face it, had we not been at home, or we'd had goal-line technology, we wouldn’t have won anyway.

I also don’t buy into the theory that the England team will be a happier camp with players like Wayne Rooney getting a bumper new contract. Surely money is of little significance to someone who earns a reported £300,000 per week. I don’t even know what I would do with a contract that size. I would probably get Sky 3D so I could watch Man United’s demise in better quality, and pick up Rooney’s wig. Not sure the ornaments would be secure given Danny Welbeck’s shooting.

I certainly can’t get carried away with a 1-0 friendly win over Denmark, which was the ideal opportunity to try out some fringe players for Roy Hodgson; yet, youngsters Ashley Cole and Steven Gerrard still pulled on the three lions shirt. Then again, it was probably good for Ashley Cole to have a break from doing bench work. On the plus side, I don’t know why everyone is worrying about the group stage. Italy have to rely on the unreliable Mario Balotelli, and Uruguay only drew their second leg qualifying play-off against Jordan 0-0 – and she has let herself go since she and Peter Andre went their separate ways.

Dan’s Book

History repeating Loyal York City supporters will be interested to hear of a specially organised friendly between York City Past Players and York FA Old Boys. The game is in aid of the Good Night’s Sleep appeal for Martin House Children’s Hospice. The game is taking place at Huntington Sports Club (home of Huntington Rovers) on 6th April with an 11am kick-off. Familiar faces like Marco Gabbiadini, Tony Canham, Andy McMillan, Jon McCarthy and Gary Ford will all be lining up for the York City past players, and with only a £3 entry fee (free for kids), plus a raffle and music, it promises to be a great event.

Dreams of League One Who knows, by the time the World Cup comes around, York City could be in a different division. Don’t get me wrong, after the 2-0 defeat at Bury on 28th December that looked inevitable, but credit to Nigel Worthington who has done a sterling job getting the Minster Men much more solid at the back and able to find different ways to win. Catch City’s promotion quest with home games against Accrington Stanley (“who are they?”) on 12th April, Bury on 18th April and the last home fixture of the season against Newport County on 26th April.

In the ring While the whole of the UK awaits the massive grudge match between Carl Froch and George Groves, local professionals Harry Matthews and Graham Fearn represented the city in a recent small hall show at Doncaster Dome. Fearn came up against the slick, counter punching southpaw Robbie Barrett. In an evenly-matched contest, there was little to choose between the two fighters. Fearn's experience allowed him to not take any punishment, looking at the end like he had been for a jog rather than a fight, but the referee’s scorecard of 40-36 was uncomfortable reading for Fearn who felt like he had at least shared some of the rounds. As for ‘Pocklington Rocket’ Harry Matthews, his career has apparently somewhat stalled after a bright start that led to nine straight wins. However, the bigger picture shows injuries and changes in management, and being matched with some real

quality operators (such as Chris Eubank Jr) probably doesn’t do justice for his talents. Against home favourite Luke Crawford, a natural Super-Middle Weight, continued to land impressive shots, from all angles including a couple of stunning uppercuts, though Crawford, roared on by the sell-out crowd, kept landing big shots of his own. The final bell rang at the end of the sixth as Matthews rose his hands aloft in claim of victory, but the referee edged Crawford the winner by only one point (58-57). Now Harry Matthews has a losing record of 12-13-2, but the performance was hailed by trainer and manager Glenn Banks and he will be looking for Matthews to rise again.

Ask the Web Wizard PART 2

The internet can be a scary place so we put some commonly asked questions to our Website Designer Dave. This month we asked...

“Aren’twebsitesreally expensiveandcomplicated?” Simply put, no. First let's look about the issue of cost. Usually a web designer will charge you for the amount of time it takes to build your site. Therefore, if you want an extremely complicated all-singing all-dancing website with animations and other things that may take a lot of time to create, it will cost more. However, I've found that most businesses don't need something like that at all. Look at the Google homepage: it's clean, neat, minimalist and doesn't bombard the visitor with information. In my experience, simple websites work best for businesses. So you won't be paying an arm and a leg certainly not with Your Local Link Web Design services. It is important to remember though that whatever is spent is a one-off payment that will quickly be made back from the extra business you will generate. A website is there forever, working for you in the background and will also add value to any other advertising you do - such as in print publications - as customers will have a place to go to find out

We have all the latest news from things that go vroom!

It could be said they’ve come on a bit Porsche: a car maker synonymous with speed, high technology and luxury. But, according to the recent unveiling at a German car museum, the company’s first ever experiment with motoring prowess was a little more... well... ‘streamlined’. Built in 1898, the Egger-Lohner electric vehicle C.2 Phaeton model (P1) - which isn’t as catchy a name as the 911 - was designed by Ferdinand Porsch himself and

You must be Kwidding We all hate being stuck in traffic jams, especially when we can't see what the cause of the jam is in the first place. Well, thanks to car maker Renault, that annoyance could soon be a thing of the past. Unveiled at a car show in India, the Renault Kwid is the first concept car to feature its own autonomous drone. That

means a little helicopter takes off from the roof of the car and points a built-in camera at the road ahead, allowing the driver to see the cause of the problem and to pick the best route to take. We assume that this cutting-edge technology won't be cheap, and will set you back quite a few Kwid. Tee hee.

Tell me about it, stud Last month we reported that supercar maker McLaren will soon be doing away with the humble windscreen wiper in favour of more futurist option. But now we’re cock-a-hoop to discover that soon

featured an electric motor, four wheels... and not much else. It could achieve a top speed of 21 mph and go for around 49 miles before needing to recharge. Time travellers should head for Vienna, Austria, around 1898 to see the car (can we call it that?) in all its glory, or head to StuttgartZuffenhausen, Germany, to see it in the museum today.

tyre chains, those awkward things you strap to your wheels in thick snow, will also soon be consigned to the history books - in a very James Bond way. That is because tyre makers Nokian have created a wheel that deploys metal studs á la James Bond’s snow car in The Living Daylights. At the mere push of a button the tyres go from road-worthy to snowworthy without having to add extra chains or equipment. Handy if you’re being chased by Alpine police. All we need now is a car that can deploy skies.

Beat the April Showers

If the rain lashes down this month we have some tips to keep you safe on those wet roads. • Leave lots of space between you and other cars - even pedestrians on the pavement. • Drive slowly through puddles and standing water. Keep going once you have started and make sure you have a clear run. • If you can’t see where you are going to come out of the water, such as when approaching flooding on a bend, think twice about driving into it at all. • If driving through a very deep puddle never take your foot off the accelerator, as this could allow water to travel up the exhaust. • Once you’re out of the water, dry your brakes. The best way to do this is to lightly apply the brake as you drive along for a few seconds - but check nobody is close behind you.

Bespoke brilliance Whether you’re looking to give your bedroom a facelift or you want to make the most of the space in your kitchen, Luke and the team offer great value expertise you can count on. There are so many reasons that we love Counter Interiors of York that it's genuinely difficult to know where to start. What's our favourite part? Maybe it's the fact that they're the only outlet in York and the surrounding areas to offer the frankly stunning new Masterclass Kitchen range. Perhaps it's the incredible computer aided 3D design (used on Channel Four's Grand Designs) that lets you view your kitchen before any work has even begun. Or, maybe it's that Luke can beat quotes from certain large DIY chains, that you might expect would be cheaper than a bespoke kitchen fitter. Who knows? Choose the masters Having been adapting and fitting beautiful furniture across the city since 2000, you might expect that

NUMBER CRUNCHING: Masterclass Kitchens offer a whopping 14,000 cabinets, 200 handles, 300 doors to choose from – and a 10 year warranty.

the team would have lost enthusiasm for their work, but Luke is as excited about being York's only branch of Masterclass Kitchens as a child on Christmas morning; and with good reason. “There are hundreds of different furniture combinations, so customers aren't restricted at all,” enthuses Luke. “They're absolutely

top quality, German style kitchens, but without the price tag. Also, because they're made in Britain, buying from them means we can support the British economy, which is fantastic.” Budget friendly You might assume that a bespoke option would be out of your budget,

but you'd be wrong. Because Luke and the team use suppliers that offer genuine value for money without compromising on quality, they can work within your budget and find solutions to suit you. Also, they do the work in-house, meaning that they can control the costs more easily. For instance, their granite worktops are manufactured in a factory that's part of their business group, so the team can offer very competitive prices.

Style, durability, value – three words associated with the workmanship of York's own James Sanderson, and perhaps that's why the TV cameras came calling. You may have spotted James, owner of Eco Flooring UK, showcasing his talents on Channel 4's Restoration Nightmare. He transformed the bathroom flooring areas at Rise Hall, a dilapidated Grade II house in East Yorkshire. Instead of using new wood, James rescued the existing flooring and made it into something beautiful – so beautiful, in fact, that it ended up being used throughout most of the house. James is a specialist in restoring historical flooring, having also reclaimed materials at Ampleforth Manor in York, amongst other properties across the UK. Design De-mystified by Becs.

sakuras,akura

Spring is one of my favourite times to be a York resident. You just can’t beat a crisp clear day with the sun shining and the daffodils nodding along the city walls. My favourite of all the spring flowers is cherry blossom (“Sakura” in Japanese) and for the last few years I’ve been seeking out the perfect way to bring this gorgeous bloom indoors, all year round. To my simultaneous delight and disappointment, I have discovered de Gournay hand-painted wall coverings. The Plum Blossom design from their Japanese Collection, (www.degournay. com) would be beyond-perfect for my scheme but at upwards of £365 per panel my husband would not thank me for splashing out on such an extravagance. So, being the resourceful type, I thought I’d create my own version of these gorgeous hand-finished murals. There are more ways than one to skin the proverbial cat and I’m determined to find them.

Method 1: Wall decal.

A decal is a design prepared on special paper for transfer on to another surface. In short, it’s a big sticker. Not my favourite option as you don’t get the colour variation found in painted murals, but often a very costeffective way to introduce some interest to your walls. Branch with blossom and birds wall sticker. From £19.19 + shipping www.vinylimpression.co.uk

42

Method 2: Photographicmural. These are from Surface View and whilst I’m showing just two, there are actually THOUSANDS of images and options available. I love that they are customisable in wall size, image scale, and surface

finish. This means that if you don’t want to cover an entire wall, you could just commission a small piece, paste it onto your wall and frame it like a picture. Murals from £55/sq m depending on your chosen surface finish. To cover an “average” wall size would cost around £390 www.surfaceview.co.uk Above Left: Blossom & Sky Mural by Nic Miller Right:The Flowers of Prunus Kanzan by Clive Nichols.

your home & garden

Method3:Stencils.

If you’re anything like me this word sends shivers down your spine. Anyone else reminded of the “Changing Rooms” era when Linda Barker and her team reigned supreme? Shudder. Time to put those prejudices to one side, though, as stencils could offer just the right amount of guidance combined with flexibility to achieve the “hand-painted” look. The added bonus? These can be used again and again, unlike a sticker or mural. Stencil Cherry Blossoms, by Cutting Edge stencils on Bonanza market. From around £30 + international shipping www.bonanzamarket.co.uk Even if cherry blossoms aren’t your thing, I hope you’re feeling inspired. A designer price tag doesn’t mean you can’t achieve your desired look on a budget!

A personal “P.S.”

Garden lighting Electrical expert Matt Todd gives us the lowdown. Spring is a great time to get into the garden and have a good clear up before your plants begin to flourish, and it’s also the best time to consider how some garden lighting might liven things up. If you want to lay some cables in the ground without disturbing your planting too much then now is the time to do it. Gardens look amazing when lit up at night, and modern LED light fittings are virtually maintenance free so you can get creative and add an extra dimension to your borders. There are plenty of options to consider. Up-lighters or floodlights will draw attention to a favourite tree or other focal point in your garden. Socialising or eating areas need some ambient lighting so that you can see your dinner! Lights can be placed on the outside of buildings or other walled areas, into the ground or hung from overhead cables. When installing, make sure you use an RCD (residual current device) to protect all outside wiring. Best practice would dictate laying cables in a trench of perhaps two spade depths to eliminate potential problems later on, but if you can’t physically protect the cable from enthusiastic spade work then low voltage cables are safe to lay on the surface. Enjoy this springtime in your garden and feel free to contact us for advice on bringing it to life with light! For advice on all things electrical, visit www.htodd.co.uk or call 628676.

The grass really is greener

Now that spring has well and truly arrived, the familiar grumble of lawn mowers starts up every Sunday across the city. We're not talking about the machines grumbling, though, but the human mowers who are operating them. However, this month we expect to hear lots of whooping instead, as York grass cutters discover Lawns for Lifestyles. The team provide a natural looking, zero maintenance alternative to natural grass, and a high standard of installation. Now all you need to do is choose the style – 'centre court' or 'just cut'? n Visit www.lawnsforlifestyles.co.uk or call 488868.

Five handy tips to make those jobs around the home that little bit easier

Difficulty screwing through wood? Simply have a bar of soap on hand (ours is hanging from the work bench) and roll the screw along it. The soap will act like a lubricant, allowing the screw to penetrate the wood easily. Smells nice too.

Sir Mixalot

See clearly

1

Tired of rifling through your deep toolbox for one little screw or washer that you need? Simply put all your odds and ends into one clear (yet tough) plastic bag to make it easy to spot which bit you need. On a side note, kids; this also works for Lego.

Givescratchestheboot

2

46

Are you also scratching the boot of your car on the rough inside surface of your garage door? Get a few lengths of foam insulation and glue it to the raised parts of the metal door, those that the boot tends to rest upon when open. Sorted.

Need to give some paint a thorough stirring? Save your elbow grease with a power drill and a whisk from the kitchen. Combining the two and giving the paint a powerful stir for a minute or so will ensure the colour is as bright as possible.

It sucks

Vacuum cleaner can’t reach those high spots or ceiling windows? Don’t faff about standing on a chair, simply get yourself a long cardboard tube and tape it to the end of the vacuum’s nozzle. Hey presto - instant suction extender.

She bakes, she makes, she decorates…frankly there’s nothing our very own Rachel doesn’t know. Every month she’ll be passing on some of her favourite money and time saving tips… Beware, vampires Want a strong garlicky flavour? Add it towards the end of cooking and it’ll pack more punch. Add when you start cooking for a more subtle flavour. Take a tumble If you’re fed up of your bin smelling yucky, pop a tumble dryer sheet at the bottom before placing the bag inside to help to eliminate the odours a little. Sparkle and shine Dishwasher tablets can sometimes leave your dishes looking dull. Add half a lemon to your dishwasher to give your crockery a sparkle and a fresh scent.

Chop, chop Your chopping board will last much longer if you regularly coat it with vegetable oil. From toast to post Let’s face it – toast racks are rarely used for toast. If you’ve got one languishing at the back of a cupboard, repurpose it as an unusual holder for your post. Thaw, son of Odin! Need to defrost your freezer? Don’t hack at the ice like some crazy caveman, simply remove all your food into freezer bags, place a tray of boiling water into the freezer and let science do all the work for you.

Though this will do little to comfort those who have been hit by flooding, the torrential downpours have lifted the levels of reservoirs to “high or exceptionally high,” according to a spokeswoman for Thames Water. And closer to home, Yorkshire Water tweeted: “With reservoir levels at 97% full, it’s highly unlikely that our customers will experience any water restrictions this year.” Who else is thinking water fight at Museum Gardens? We’re warning you though: our water pistols are huge. And no, that is not a euphemism.

We'll be heading to the Harrogate Spring Flower Show, 24th-27th April, at The Great Yorkshire Showground with this discounted ticket offer….will you? There we'll be treated to the very best of spring, including show gardens, activities, demonstrations and, of course, the finest grub this county has to offer. What's more, book before the 15th April and receive £2.50 off your ticket prices! n Call 01482 308822.

Did you know... ...that you shouldn't put cooking fat out for wild birds? The RSPB has warned against leaving the remains of the roast out for our feathered friends because the fat remains soft when cool, meaning that it can smear onto birds' feathers which affects their water-proofing and insulating qualities. Also, the salt that many of us sprinkle onto the chicken skin is toxic to birds, and the meat juices in the fat often quickly goes rancid. If you want to make homemade fat balls, the advice is to only use pure fats such as lard and suet.

Foliage or flowers? Which is your favourite? Vanessa Cook from Stillingfleet Lodge Garden and Nursery will explain why she thinks foliage is the king of the garden on 15th April at Askham Bryan College Gardening Club. The talk begins at 7.30pm and takes place in the Conference Hall at the college. n Visit www.abcgardeningclub.org.uk or call 795059.

Tel: 07702 126380 Now that spring has arrived, your garden will be bursting with more life than ever. Take a few moments to see which of these you can spot in your back yard! Animals Pipistrelle bats will emerge from hibernation this month, and you’ll be able to spot them around dusk when they come out from their roosts to feed for a couple of hours. Pipistrelles are tiny – and we mean tiny! Their wingspan is between 200-235mm, and they only weigh between three and eight grams. You might even spot some baby Pipistrelles in August when they first leave their roosts. Also look out for Large Red Damselflies, which look a little like dragonflies but with a red abdomen, around water. Plants The many different varieties of camellias come into their own this month, offering a wonderful variety of pink, red and white blooms. Something a little more unusual, though no less pretty, is the Meconopsis Lingholm, or the blue poppy, a tall growing variety with gorgeous sky blue petals. Look out also for Cowslip, native to the Yorkshire Dales, which features a delicate apricot scent. It used to be used to make wine, but as the plant has been declining in numbers in recent years we recommend not picking it!

Ask Chris...

Got a gardening question?

Chris Brown from Brown’s Nurseries can help

I would like to grow a wisteria on my house wall. Could you give me some advice on growing and pruning it?

My lawn is covered in moss – what can I do to alleviate the problem?

Wisterias are deciduous, woody-stemmed, twining climbers, usually vigorous, grown for their beautiful flowers in pendant racemes in late spring and early summer. Flowers are on lateral spurs on ripened wood. Most are fully hardy, but flower best in a warm, sunny, sheltered site. Wisterias may take seven years or more to begin flowering, and plants on nitrogen-rich soils may produce excessive vegetative growth at the expense of flowers. Wisterias can be trained against walls and fences in a variety of shapes. Espalier form is one of the best suited to display the flowers. Pruning

Ferrous sulphate, the chemical that is found in most weed and moss killer products, is one of the chemicals that kills moss. You should apply ferrous sulphate between March and April, once the lawn has started to grow.

should be done in mid-winter and again in summer, about two months after flowering. Once established, the aim of pruning is to control extension growth and to encourage the production of lateral flowering spurs. The current season’s shoots are cut back in two

stages to within two or three buds of their base. These will bear the coming season’s flowers. It is also advisable to feed with a high potash plant food in mid-summer, as this will help in the production of next season’s flowers.

If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.

Apply ferrous sulphate between seven to 14 days prior to raking, preferably when conditions are damp as this will improve penetration into the moss. A light topping with the mower beforehand will also help penetration. Because ferrous sulphate acidifies the soil, you must use it uniformly over the whole lawn. The moss will turn dark brown over the next five to seven days, after which you should rake out the moss on a dry day, normally between April and early May when the grass is noticeably growing. Also, scarifying a lawn with a springbok rake will take out all the moss and dead grass from the base of the lawn. This will also let air around the base of the grass. It is advisable not to use grass cuttings that have had weed and moss killer applied in your compost, as this will poison it.

make everything in your garden lovely with dean’s garden centre

FOCUS ON:

R h o d o d e n d r o n s

The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down. popular are ‘Fred Peste’, ‘Golden Torch’ and ‘Percy Wiseman’.

For anyone who gardens on acid soil, Rhododendrons are some of the most prized ornamental shrubs. Trusses of bell-shaped flowers in a wide variety of bold colours give year round form and texture to the garden. They range in size from giant tree-sized forms that reach 30 metres in their native habitat, to tiny low-growing alpine varieties. Care: Rhododendrons require moisture retentive but well drained acidic soil, with plenty of organic matter and a pH of between five and six. If you are not sure of your pH, testing kits are available – a good investment, as they can prevent you spending £10-£20 on a plant that won’t thrive in your soil.

Even if you’re not blessed with acidic soil, there are still a couple of ways to grow Rhododendrons and other acid loving plants like Pieris and Gaultheria in your garden. The first and most simple way is to use pots and containers filled with special ericaceous compost. This is a peat based compost that contains no lime and has a pH of around 5.5. The only drawback to pots is if you live in a hard water area and water with tap water, lime builds

The second way to deal with bud drop is by building a raised bed; railway sleepers are ideal. The bed is then filled using lime free ericaceous compost.

up in the compost, making the plants yellow and sickly with a lack of vigour (chlorotic). However, this can be got around by either collecting and using rain water, or applying a specific fertiliser that feeds the plant and counteracts the lime. Bud Drop: Another problem growing Rhododendrons in pots is bud drop. Should compost in the pot dry out, the stress will cause the buds to not develop correctly and fall prematurely. However, many new hybrids of Rhododendron yakushimanum have been bred that are ideal for containers. They come in a wide range of colours, and some of the most

Flowering: Rhododendrons usually start flowering in February, with Rhododendron praecox being one of the first. It requires a sheltered site as the rosy purple flowers are slightly susceptible to damaging frosts, but the real show starts in late April and builds to a stunning climax of colour in early June though some varieties, notably ‘Polar Bear’ flower, during July and early August. Rhododendrons can be planted all year round, provided that the soil is not frozen or water logged, but the optimum time is September when the ground is still warm but moist. Spring planting can be equally effective but requires very regular watering throughout the summer months to ensure successful establishment. A good thick organic mulch on the soil surface after planting helps conserve moisture.

GROW YOUR OWN with Debbie Pendle from Brunswick Organic Nursery

Growing your own fruit and veg is rewarding, good for the planet – and your pocket. Here’s how…

Freshly picked garden peas are a delicious summer treat, and the attractive climbing plants boast pretty flowers ranging from white to dark crimson. They can be sown in autumn or late winter with some form of frost protection to provide early crops, or outdoors from spring onwards for crops during the summer months. Peas do not require rich soil and are not difficult to grow, but do need some care and attention.

but if sowing in late June/July choose a first early variety, which will mature quicker.

Alternatively, you can sow pea seeds into individual pots and plant outside when they are a few inches tall. The pots need to be reasonably deep, as peas dislike root disturbance. Plants raised under cover are less susceptible to slug and snail damage, which can be a big problem at the seedling stage.

Animal

of

Bees aren’t just great for your garden, they’re essential for the survival of the planet. Without bees, our crops would fail and we’d run out of food pretty quickly – it’s been estimated that bees are responsible for pollinating up to a third of all fruit and vegetables. Bees have declined in numbers recently, but there’s lots that you can do in your back yard to help out!

Bee water-conscious Bees can't use bird baths and ponds to drink, as they are usually too deep. You can help bees to have a bath and a drink by lining the edges of a shallow plate with flat rocks, and filling halfway with water. This way, the bees will have an island to land on and won't drown. We know, the thought of bees having a bath is absolutely too cute.

Bee-friendly plants Bees are particularly attracted to blue, yellow and purple flowers, and they also prefer flowers with only one row of petals, as these contain more pollen than flowers with more than one row. Bees also love strong-smelling herbs and flowers, and plants that are close together so that they don't have to fly too far! Try some of the following in your garden to attract bees. Lavender, Thyme, Mint, Dahlia, Foxglove, Geranium, Sunflower

Bee welcoming

There’s no better way to make those bees feel at home than to provide them with one! You will need: 3 A small wooden box with one side left open 3 Brightly coloured organic paint 3 Nesting tubes (available from garden centres) What to do: Paint your box using organic paint that won’t harm the bees. Preferably, use yellow, blue or purple paint, as these colours attract bees. Then, fill the box with nesting tubes. The tubes should be standing upright so that the bees can crawl into them, and you should pack them in tightly so that they don’t fall out when you move the box. Hang the box in your garden with the tubes facing the front, and ensure there is some freshly dug soil nearby that bees can use to build their nest. Don’t have the time to make your own bee house? Get one ready made – this one from Amnesty International costs £16 and will benefit a good cause.

Bee organic

Chemicals can benefit your garden by getting rid of pests, but unfortunately they can also be harmful to wildlife that we want in our gardens. Chemicals can be poisonous to bees, so try to avoid using them in your garden – natural pesticides such as ladybirds can often do the same job just as well.

It includes annual vaccinations, flea and worm treatments – costs that aren’t always considered by owners when buying or rescuing a pet. Did you know that very few insurance companies will help cover costs of preventative health care, and that microchipping will soon be compulsory for all dogs? Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and husband. But more importantly, he is a man. As a boy he assumed The Planet of the Apes was a Bible story, but at 32 he finds himself writing for Your Local Link. These are his (un)manly words.

Mum’s the word

some sort of gift box containing a gag and superglue? And what about my son? He’s just 10 months old and has several varied interests that include shakily standing and laughing at the vacuum cleaner. It’s a tough one and maybe he’ll be let off the gift-getting business. After all, he does give my wife at least two presents every day. Maybe on Mother’s Day I’ll teach him to gift wrap his pooey nappies.

Prior to 2010 Mother’s Day was a simple affair and went something like this: The Saturday before Mothering Sunday my wife would ask what I had sent to my mother. I would then panic, scream “Is it Mother’s Day?!?” and curse the Royal Mail for not delivering on a Sunday (seriously, it’s just lazy). I then feel guilty for the next 12 hours before, on Sunday morning, I call my mum and ask if she has received her card.

“What?” I convincingly declare (theatre degree kicking in), “it hasn’t arrived? Curse you, Royal Mail!” I then go on to describe just how lovely this imaginary card was, and how I had reached into the depths of my soul to compose a suitable poem inside. Foolproof. Child labour

laws, are too young to work and earn their own money to get my wife a present. So now my wife, the mother of my two children, is sort of like my mum too. That is weird.

That all changed when I had children. Not only was I now expected to both forget about and then lie to my own mother, I now had to act on behalf of the kiddies who, according to several

I’m going to be better this year though. As I write this it is the beginning of March; I’ve got three more weeks to sort the mother issue out. My own mum will get the

loveliest, cheapest card Londis has to offer, but wifey needs a bit of thought as the presents need to at least seem like they came from the children. Clear and present danger My daughter is three, therefore she likes talking and breaking things. What could she “get” her mother? Maybe

Whatever I end up getting on their behalf, I’m sure it will be wrong. Whenever I have to buy my wife a present for any occasion I seem to end up convincing myself that she would actually like a Nerf gun, or that remote controlled tank with a built-in camera, or a new mobile phone cover... for my phone. It’s selfish, I know. But hey, admitting that is the first step to recov... Lego are making a Ghostbusters set! My wife needs it! There, Mother’s Day is sorted. Phew.

I am old.

Kirsty Higgins

I saw my parents the other day and they told me how my school, the one I attended until leaving the bright and dazzling lights of Doncaster for university in York, has been demolished. After a quick search on the internet I did indeed get confirmation that my school had been completely knocked down. Where once there was an imposing Art Deco building, now there is only a playing field. It made me feel like my grandparents, who I remember constantly referring to buildings that no longer existed. No doubt at some point in the future we'll drive past that site and I'll say, “There used to be a school here, “ and my kids will tut and whisper something about me being an old fogey. I am old.

Imagine that!

The other night I saw the biggest fox I have ever seen. You might think that I must have been out in the wild to see this red furry monster. No, I was on Holgate Road at 9pm going to get chocolate for my wife (happens a lot). It was massive, about the size of A MEDIUM DOG! I chased it for a bit, trying to get a snap of it on my phone, but it alluded me, dashing into the allotments. It was slightly concerning to see such a big wild animal wandering about as bold as brass and I’m worried that one day York will be overrun by huge foxes because we were too concerned with pigeons and rats and other vermin. So, as the weather improves, keep an eye out

ASK THE EXPERT

Family matters

Pre Nuptial Agreements: are they necessary? The most expensive aspect of a divorce is dealing with the finances of the marriage. This can cause considerable stress, cost and time for both parties. The current law gives the courts a wide discretion to make a variety of orders based on ‘financial needs’, resulting in a degree of uncertainty. How can I protect my assets when getting married? You can draft a Pre Nuptial Agreement (PNA). PNA’s clearly set out the couple’s desires, promoting communication and enabling them to establish rules. The legal costs of negotiating PNAs are far less than the costs of negotiating a divorce settlement. Are PNAs legally binding? At present PNA’s are not strictly legally binding in England and Wales, but past cases have established that the court can give decisive weight to

a PNA in divorce proceedings, and parties can ask the court to reflect the terms of the agreement reached. The law may change in the near future following the current law in America, where PNA’s are legally binding. The Law Commission recently announced proposals to introduce 'Qualifying Nuptial Agreements': enforceable contracts which would enable couples to make arrangements concerning the financial consequences of divorce or dissolution. There are certain formalities that the Law Commission argues should be complied with in order for the terms of a PNA to be enforceable: a) The agreement must be contractually valid; b) The agreement must be made as a deed and must contain a statement by both parties that

he or she understands that the agreement is a qualifying nuptial agreement; c) The agreement must not be made less than 28 days before the wedding; d) Both parties to the agreement must have received disclosure of material information about the other party's financial situation at the time of making the agreement; e) Both parties must have received legal advice at the time of making the agreement. Furthermore, parties will not be able to exclude the court in making orders regarding parties' 'financial needs'. This mean that any terms concerning the provision of childcare, housing, income or any other aspect which constitutes a 'financial need'

will remain subject to the scrutiny of the court. What types of issues are included in a Pre Nuptial Agreement? I would recommend that PNA’s include the following: • A schedule of all assets, liabilities and incomes of the parties; • Agreement as to what should happen to premarital property and property acquired during the marriage in the event of divorce; • Agreement on how premarital debts will be paid; • Discussion on who shall occupy and own the matrimonial home and any secondary properties; • Agreement as to whether any spousal maintenance payments should be made.

Furry friends The Keep Your Pet team, who connect volunteers with pet owners who need temporary help with pet care due to illness, have helped 20 pet owners during their first year – and the team hope that the scheme will continue to grow in year two. To kick things off, the first Annual Sponsored Dog Walk will take place on the Knavesmire on 27th April, so get your leads at the ready! Email keepyourpet@ ageukyork.org.uk for an entry form. The team are also still looking for volunteers of all ages in York and Selby, both to care for animals and help to publicise the scheme. Smile!

(You will, after reading this...) For most of us, dentures become a necessary part of life at some point. Nowadays, false teeth need no longer look so false, and can fit so well that they almost feel like the real thing. Dental Technician Carrie Whitton, of Whitton Dentures, is on a mission to make denture provision even better in York by offering home visits, as well a clear, easy to use service.

“The best results are gained when a patient is relaxed and their individual needs are listened to,” says Carrie, “and being treated in your own home means that you are in a familiar, relaxed space and won't feel rushed.” Carrie also takes the time to communicate well so that each patient's expectations are met in full. Call for a no obligation consultation today.

Carrie, who operates Whitton Dentures, says there are sound reasons behind her decision.

We're delivering the newsletter from the good folks at York Against Cancer with this issue, but we felt that the utterly fantastic work that the team and their supporters do deserved an extra mention. In the newsletter, you can read about the inspiring changes one man made to his life, and the fundraising runs he's taking on. You'll also meet researchers from York University whose studies will change our understanding of cancer, as well as YAC's Family Support Worker who helps people through difficult times. The Education Committee also explain the changes to the packs that are put together for primary schools, and new Chairman Steve Leveson is welcomed. The team also reveal their planned website relaunch this spring.

The team explain IPL

What is IPL hair removal? Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology provides fast, non-invasive hair removal for most skin types and hair colours. This can be used to treat most areas of the body in both women and men, including the face. In the vast majority of cases a series of treatments will permanently reduce the unwanted hair from the target area. However, some hair will continue to grow albeit much finer and more slowly! If I want smooth legs for summer, when should I start treatment? Because of the length of time to reduce the hair, you would need to start treatment now. We recommend around six to nine sessions to remove most visible hair depending on

68

your skin and hair type. The number of hair removal sessions depends on various factors, including where the hair is, how thick it is and also your particular skin type and hair colour. The gap between sessions is usually four weeks. How do I know if it is best for me? If you decide you want to find out more, the next step is to come in for a consultation. This is your opportunity to meet one of our trained IPL beauty therapists, check your skin and hair type and create a treatment programme tailored specifically to your needs. n Pop into the spa on Huntington Road, visit www.kukispa.com or call 659007.

Every month, we scour the beauty world for the best products so you don’t have to. This month, we’re getting our skin ready for spring VitaminEFaceScrub VaselineSpray&Go moisturiser

We love any time saving devices, particularly ones that help us to get ready more quickly in the morning, so we were intrigued to test the spray on moisturiser from Vaseline, which claims to absorb in seconds so you can get on with putting your clothes on (unless you’re a naturist, of course). It’s easy to apply and does absorb more quickly than regular moisturiser, though we found that it took slightly longer than the ‘seconds’ claimed by the packaging. We loved the fresh scent, and found that a little goes rather a long way, so it’s pretty good value for money. Plus, spraying on your moisturiser is fun. H £4.99 Tesco, Clifton Moor www.tesco.com

We were a little dubious about whether this scrub really would scrub, as it contains oatmeal which we thought might be a little too soft to get rid of dead skin. How wrong we were. Despite working in a kind, gentle way, this scrub does just what it says on the tin without harming your skin at all. Our skin was left feeling soft and smooth, and essentially incredibly clean. Plus, the

scrub smells good enough to eat. No longer will we subject our face to scratchy scrubs! Long live oatmeal! H £2.99 Superdrug, Market Street www.superdrug.com

If anyone knows about hardworking hands, it’s our Gini (she runs a farm as well as this magazine – yeah, don’t know how she manages it either). So, she was thrilled to try out this cream, and it didn’t disappoint. “It’s not the prettiest packaging, but it’s a wonder cream for winter hands!” says Gini, who adds that her partner Mick loved the cream too. “Mick’s hands split and crack, and are like sandpaper in the winter, but this has stopped all that. It’s completely nongreasy and fabulous. And a little goes a very long way – you literally only need about a pea size blob. It’s old-fashioned, but terrific.” It’s rather marvellous value for money, too... H £5.99 Thompsons Country Store, Murton Tel: 488388

Lip stain Spring beauty is all about fresh, pretty looks, and sometimes lipstick can be a bit too strong for this, especially for the daytime. ASK THE EXPERT

Haairnd Beauty Q&A

Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas! This month, she reveals all about Dermaroller treatments. As well as being used to effectively combat fine lines and wrinkles, Dermaroller skin treatment can help people treat acne scars, reduce the effects of sun damage, remove stretch marks and improve the appearance of cellulite, hyper-pigmentation and enlarged pores. But what is it? What is Genuine Dermaroller? Genuine Dermaroller™ Therapy™ provides advanced micro-medical skin-needling, a procedure that stimulates the skin to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely, creating smoother, brighter, healthier, younger-looking skin. Is Dermaroller treatment safe? Skin needling is a safe and precise procedure. The Genuine Dermaroller Therapy works by puncturing the outermost layers of your skin to create tiny pin prick injuries. These microscopic wounds will stimulate new collagen deposition until indented scars and deep lines are filled.

What are the benefits of the Dermaroller? The Dermaroller can achieve amazing results, noticeably improving the appearance of old scars or sun damaged skin, as well as revitalising and rejuvenating your appearance. As it is not necessary to remove the healthy skin with skin needling, the Dermaroller procedure offers a rapid healing time and is relatively painless. Unlike some skin therapies, there is minimal downtime and as no skin is being removed there are no risks with UV or discolouration. When will I see the results? Although the skin heals within an hour, visible signs of skin rejuvenation are seen after just six to eight weeks following the procedure.

Dermaroller procedure takes 20-30 minutes and is comfortable. What happens after Dermaroller treatment? Following treatment, a soothing cream is applied. You should continue to apply this cream for the next couple of days. For the first 24 hours the affected area will look red with an appearance very similar to mild sunburn. This is normal and generally goes by the morning. How many Dermaroller sessions will I need? Significant results are often seen after the first treatment. Your practitioner may recommend between three and five treatments for optimum and long-lasting effects.

Does Dermaroller therapy hurt? Local anaesthetic is applied to the affected area in order to numb it and the anaesthetic is then allowed to work over the course of 30 minutes. The actual

h In a jam I’m furious with my husband. While doing some spring cleaning, he threw out an antique jam spoon given to me by my grandmother. He is very sorry, but I’m not sure I can forgive him for this. It’s not the first time he’s thrown out something of value to me. How can I make him change his ways after 27 years of marriage? KN, Strensall When you said you were furious with your husband, I assumed you’d caught him with his pants down with the next door neighbour at least. But a jam spoon? Good lord, woman, if that’s all you have to complain about after 27 years of marriage then I reckon you’re doing pretty well. All right, so he chucked out your spoon. But if it was that meaningful to you, what was it doing stuffed in the back of a drawer in the first place? As for not forgiving him, what’s a dodgy piece of cutlery compared to over a quarter a century of loving someone? No one uses jam spoons outside Downton Abbey, anyway. In my experience, men respond best to clear, brief instructions. So if you want to keep your keepsakes safe, I suggest you put them in a box marked with the words ‘Do Not Throw Out’.

76

h Phone a friend? When is too late to phone someone? Last night at ten o’clock I called a woman I’d been on a date with, and she didn’t seem too pleased to hear from me. I thought she’d find it romantic that I rang just to hear her voice. Do you have any advice on this? JW, Acomb I must admit, if my phone rings after ten at night, I always assume it’s because someone has died/split up with their partner/needs bailing out of jail. And even then, I’d rather they waited until the morning to call me. But in your case, I don’t think it’s got anything to do with the late hour. How do I put this, JW? If you were the man of this woman’s dreams, then you could ring at midnight and she would be thrilled to hear from you. But after one date, calling at ten o’clock just to hear her voice is like calling to say you’re sitting outside her house with a pair of handcuffs and a chainsaw (ie, a bit creepy). My advice? Send a text next time.

It’s got to the point where I don’t look forward to meeting her. She still seems really keen to keep up our friendship. Should I just be blunt and tell her I don’t want to see her any more? I’m at a loss as to why she likes you so much, when you don’t seem at all concerned about her feelings. All right, so you’re not as close as you once were. But is that really any reason to dump her? Or are you so incredibly popular that there’s no space for anyone less than a BFF in your life? Having a friend isn’t like having a boyfriend: you don’t have to move on if it’s not working. If this friendship is really finished, it will fizzle out without you having to be brutal about it.

h What’s in a name? I hate my name. No one can spell it, I was bullied over it at school, and my life has been a misery because of it. I’m 48 – is it too late to change it? RT, Clementhorpe You do realise the whole of York is now trying to work out your name, don’t you? Personally, my money’s on Rumpelstiltskin. Seriously, it’s not too late to change your name if it bothers you that much. But I reckon after 48 years, it’s time to stand up, own it and be proud. And never, ever try to order a coffee from Starbucks. PS It is Rumpelstiltskin, isn’t it?

up close and personal

As they put the finishing touches to their comedy feature film Transatlantic Smash, we chat to York-based filmmakers Steve Shooter, Spencer Vale and Peter Marshall. Hello. Who are you and what is your project? Thanks for having us. We are a ragtag bunch comprising Spencer Vale and Peter Marshall (of comedy band Peter Marshall and The Lomos) and Producer Steve Shooter (of Fixated Productions). Our project is a film called Transatlantic Smash and it's a 'found-footage' musical comedy documentary. Yes, that is a thing apparently. Have you ever made a film before? Pete and Spencer have made video diaries about their band and a documentary about a comedy festival. We have also been involved with a couple of films made by the wonderful EBORACUM pictures. Pete has helped to produce behind the scenes films while Spencer was

“It’sabeautifuclityandthere seemstobearealfilmmakn ig communtie yvovln ig.” involved with production on their last film, Fighter Pilot. What made you want to make the film? Spencer had written a novel which we thought would make a great basis for a screenplay. Our ethos is always one of collaboration, and although

there are only three of us, we have a tendency to gather numbers along the way. We love working with creative York people on any projects we have going. We knew with a little help from our friends that we might just be able to pull it off. How have you found film making in York? Transatlantic Smash is very York centric... albeit a fictional version of the York we all know and love. We’ve worked with a shoestring budget but luckily a lot of people and local venues have been very accommodating and helpful. It’s a

beautiful city and there seems to be a real film-making community evolving. What are your eventual hopes for the project? Hollywood. Or failing that, Cannes. But we’d settle for a screening with a receptive audience, to be honest. It's been a huge learning curve, and hopefully it’ll be a springboard for future films. We are also looking at potentially entering into some film festivals and will also be producing a DVD. How can people find out more? Two Kings are better than one…

Get set for the Richard III & Henry VII Experiences The JORVIK Group, which includes the Viking Centre, Barley Hall and DIG, has taken over the space within Monk Bar that used to house the Richard III Museum. From 5th April a new museum, The Richard III Experience, will open at Monk Bar. What’s even better is that the contents of the Micklegate Bar Museum will also be replaced and updated to create The Henry VII Experience! Now the two Bar museums will be perfectly linked and make for fascinating stops on a walk of the city walls. These two new attractions will illustrate the story of medieval York fantastically well, giving visitors an idea of what it would have been like to live in the city through the War of the Roses, living first under the white rose of Richard, then the red rose of Henry Tudor.

As well as completely refurbishing the bar and dining area, the couple have revamped the menu (warm salad of belly pork with chorizo, anyone?) and the pub is already becoming a hot topic of conversation in

the area. And kids eat free, so it's friendly on your pocket as well as your tastebuds! They're celebrating their launch by giving away a yummy prize to one lucky reader – see our competition pages to find out more! n Visit www.tlcwhiteswan.com or call 01653 618286.

It might be easy to underestimate The Bay Horse at Murton. The quality restaurant offers free kids meals, as well as a weekly quiz every Wednesday – just what you want in a local. But what really makes this place stand out is the food, with adventurous daily specials and a chef who is happy to create special orders that aren't on the menu. Our Gini was so impressed after her visit that it was a full fortnight before she stopped talking incessantly about the “to die for” salmon and prawn risotto that was created especially for her. We still catch her looking out of the window with a wistful look in her eye. Right, there's only one thing for it – we're off on an office outing to The Bay Horse! n Call 488286.

Find yourself living for the weekend? The folks at The Drovers Arms Country Pub at Skipwith are on a mission to change that. Their mid-week offers are sure to make every day less 'everyday'. Believe it or not, you might even find yourself looking forward to Monday (we know, shock horror!) when you'll be able to enjoy 20% off your food bill all day long. Then on Tuesday there's homemade curry and a drink for just £9.95; two steaks plus a bottle of house wine for £25 on Wednesday; and a free supper (yes, we did say free!) every Thursday for quiz goers. At this rate, the weekends are going to seem pretty boring...

Like Gran used to make...

Keep hunger at Bay

Roll on

Northallerton Farmers’ Market; Town Hall, 23rd April, 8.30am-2pm.

In our humble opinion, there's nothing that beats quality, home cooked, traditional food at Easter – and that's exactly what you'll get from Beechwood Close on Shipton Road. Based just 15 minutes walk from the city centre, the restaurant and hotel staff pride themselves on their good old-fashioned family favourites, with even better value available from the Early Bird Menu between 5.307.30pm daily. And with the voucher in this issue, kids will eat free!

York Farmers’ Market; Parliament Street; last Friday of every month.

Brewing

for the community York city centre is known for being a place to relax, unwind and sip a coffee on nearly every street corner. But did you know that it isn't just the centre of York where you can enjoy the finest cup of Joe? Away from the hustle and bustle of Coney Street, the Leeman Road area isn’t the first place you'd think to travel to when the lunch-time hunger sets in. But thanks to the newly opened Barnabas Café on Salisbury Terrace, you soon will. A charity, the Barnabas Café was set up to enhance the local area and give the community a central focal point. They source their coffee beans from a local roaster (which we think sounds like a great job) and serve the best of British teas and cakes. The whole café is run by dedicated volunteers and the upstairs Barnabas Centre holds a venue for events and performances. n Find out more at www.facebook.com/barnabascafe

Piece of cake With programmes like the Great British Bake Off inspiring more and more of us to dig out the mixing bowl, ensuring our baked goodies are presented beautifully is becoming a national obsession. And luckily for us Yorkies, the rather marvellous new cake décor emporium Iced Yorkshire offers both supplies and classes galore! Join Berwick Kaler for bubbly – and cake, of course – as he officially opens the business at the Grand Opening on 26th April from 11am-4pm. Iced Yorkshire is based on Stockton Lane next to Deans Garden Centre. n Visit www.icedyorkshire.com or call 07769 597628.
