burgers. As Dave argues, it will save her having to cook on Christmas Day. Good luck, Dave.
As the Your Local Link office gets geared up for Christmas, we’re reaching festive fever pitch. The creative office have been listening to Christmas songs since October, and Dave is so super organised that he got all of his presents sorted before Bonfire Night. Granted, he bought them all from the reduced section of the Co-op in Haxby, but it’s the thought that counts, right? We’re sure his lovely lady will love a box of cut price turkey
The rest of us are still struggling with our gift buying. Nathan got so wound up when trying to buy gifts online one lunchtime that he actually kicked our office Christmas tree. It was only a gentle nudge, but because we hadn’t been able to choose just one theme this year the tree was bedecked with three times the usual amount of decorations. The end result was Nathan (and Ellen and Laura) falling victim to what shall now and forever be referred to as the Great Falling Tree Disaster of 2013. It took Mim and Kelly 15 minutes to rescue them from the mountain of baubles. Laura is still picking bits of glitter out of her hair.

However, despite all of the bauble bother and present palaver, we’re really looking forward to Christmas this year. That is due in no small part to our special feature on the incredible staff, volunteers and fundraisers at York Hospital Children’s Ward and Special Care Baby Unit. The work that those amazing people do year round is nothing short of breathtaking, and they all deserve a medal, if only for reminding us of the true meaning of Christmas. Alongside the special children’s feature – which includes lots of fun for little ones – we’ve got local news, reviews, offers and events for you to enjoy, covering everything from beauty to gardening. As ever, we hope you find the magazine useful!

Another year dawns; another succession of the same old months in the same old order. Fortunately we know a way to brighten up your year and give each month a pleasantly local flavour. Local artist Tony Brook, who illustrated our short story anthology ‘The Figure Stepped Out…’, is back once again with a stunning new calendar. Tony has depicted York throughout the year in 12 new paintings, picking out some well-known (and not so well-known) locations. Visit www.tonybrookyorkartist.co.uk The great news is that we have one of Tony’s calendars to give away. All you have to do is answer this simple question: What is the name of our short story anthology that Tony illustrated? Send your answer (along with your name, address and daytime contact number) on a postcard marked ‘Calendar Competition’ to the address on page six, or via email to info@yourlocallink.co.uk The competition ends on 20th December, so don’t delay. Terms and conditions apply. Good luck.

It’s that time of year again; boards will be trodden, thighs will be slapped and cheeky innuendoes will be made. Yes, panto season is upon us once again and one show that will be sure to draw a crowd is Dick Whittington at York Barbican. From 20th-30th December Alex Winters from CBeebies, Richard and Judy’s daughter Chloe Madeley and Coronation Street’s Danny Young will act out the classic tale of York-lad Dick and his trek to London. The ups and downs of life as seen by our very own (very) grumpy, (almost) old woman
festive family flip out It’s 7pm on Christmas Day 2012, and I’m hiding in the downstairs toilet with a bottle of Baileys and my husband’s new Jeremy Clarkson book. It’s not my idea of festive entertainment, but I’m afraid if I join the rest of the family for the Dr Who Christmas special, I’ll finally explode and do some serious damage with my novelty nutcrackers.
Too many cooks In our house, the first argument generally breaks out during the cooking of Christmas dinner. It’s lovely when everyone pitches in to help. But what I can’t bear are the relatives who wander into the kitchen and stand behind you watching your every move, like John Torode on Masterchef.
Like thousands of women up and down the country, I have a bad case of the Festive Family Blues.
My sister is the worst. She brings her own meat thermometer and insists on checking the turkey every ten minutes. One of these days I’m sorely tempted to tell her where she can stick it. And it won’t be in my turkey, I can tell you.
It seems like such a good idea, spending time with the family at Christmas. ‘Come round to ours,’ you say merrily, imagining yourself laughing over a game of charades or walking through the snow in your co-ordinated woollies like the M & S ads. But life isn’t like that. Given the heady mix of being stuck indoors in an overheated house, with too much to eat and way too much to drink with people who generally get on your nerves, is it any wonder most of us have come to blows before the Queen’s Speech?
And you can absolutely guarantee that just as you place dinner on the table, someone will say, ‘Did I mention, I’m now vegan/on a strict diet that only involves eating foods beginning with the letter J?’ Well no, you didn’t. If you had, I might not have wasted my time wrestling a turkey the size of Guernsey.

According to
Donna...
Murder by Monopoly After dinner, the fun and games start. Well, the games, anyway. Whoever said Christmas is a time for families has never spent three hours playing Monopoly with my brother-in-law. Seriously, I don’t mind being bankrupt, by what I can’t stand is a lecture on Where I Went Wrong. Sometimes it’s all I can do to stop myself shoving the Scotty dog up his nose. Families can get very competitive at Christmas time. Every year, my friend Sarah’s sister coaches her four children to perform a musical number for their delighted grandparents. “They’re like the Von Trapps,” Sarah says. “They even had matching costumes last year. Meanwhile, my three year old’s party piece is putting his Chuggington underpants on his head.” Old rivalries emerge, fuelled by wine. Every year you tell yourself never again. But it’s like childbirth, you forget the pain and the next year you’re telling everyone to come round again. But this year when I retreat into the toilet, I’ll be taking the Shiraz and that Monopoly board with me…
There’s no better barometer on what’s hot and what’s not than our Donna. Here, she shares her thoughts on what’s in or out in her own unique style!
Hot
Christmas food brochures. The more extravagant, the better. Even though the idea of cranberry and orange marinated salmon or Armagnac soaked plums would freak my family out (they’re still reeling from the Christmas I bought a different type of packet stuffing), I still enjoy a bit of culinary daydreaming. And one day I might well serve up a duck stuffed inside a chicken inside a turkey inside a goose, just to see their faces.
Not
January Sales. They used to start in January, but now they happen in the middle of December. Great if you’re lucky enough to pick up a pre-Christmas bargain. But really annoying if you’ve been organised and done your Christmas shopping in November.

Horoscopes December 2013 Starsign of the month... Sagittarius
(22nd November - 21st December)
here are a few famous faces you share your sign with
by James Christie n For details of private readings phone 07884 107100 or 01423 339770 Email: jcp@magepublishing.co.uk
You will try very hard to be positive and cheerful, and by and large, you should succeed. Beneath the surface, however, there are niggles of anxiety and discontent. Your common sense tells you that you’ve got nothing to worry about, but you’ll fret and worry just the same. Parents are going to be concerned for their kids while grown up children will be concerned for the welfare of one or more elderly relatives. Lovers may find that their partner is just a little subdued and uncommunicative. You will want to know why and what’s wrong, not allowing for the fact that sometimes we all need our quiet moments of reflection. Career-minded members of the sign will resign themselves to the festive season, but will probably be glad when it’s all over and they can get back to the office. Spiritually-inclined Sagittarians will get really cheesed off with the commercial aspects of Christmas, and will seek some space away from supermarkets, end of the season sales and the inevitable TV repeats. Don’t misunderstand me, December is not going to be a bad month. It’s just that a whole load of Sagittarians are going to be aware of the fact that it could be a whole lot better!

ARIES
(22nd December - 19th January)
(20th January - 18th February)
(19th February - 20th March)
(21st March - 19th April)
This is one of those periods where you’re going to have to work hard at being happy! You’re simply not in the mood for wild parties and Christmas celebrations, and although other people will be trying hard to be cheerful and supportive, the bottom line is you’re not going to be easy to please.
December should be quite a good money month for you and you’ll do what you usually do to make Christmas a success – but there is a muted feel to this year’s celebrations and you may end up feeling a bit isolated. There’ll be some laughter and good cheer, but lots of memories coming to the surface of Christmases left behind.
December and Christmas of this year are going to be extremely successful. Travel aspects are strong, as are romantic opportunities for the unattached. You’ll be pleased with where you’ve been in 2013 and even more pleased with where you think you’re going in 2014.
An awkward month where jobs and careers are concerned. You are far from 100% happy and no one around you has any answers. You’ll be glad to get to Christmas, not so much for the festive cheer but more because it gives you chance to get your neck off the chopping block.
14
(20th April - 20th May) Some legal flavour to the beginning of the month and possibly some problems concerning a motor vehicle. No Ferrarris for Christmas but maybe someone will buy you a new battery for the old banger parked in your drive. A rather different Christmas ahead, and all the better for it.
GEMINI (21st May - 20th June) Gentlemen may get much of their own way at this time and over the Christmas period, but fellas, be warned – there’s a high price to pay in the New Year! Ladies in love should play a patient waiting game without rocking boats. The rewards are worth waiting for.
CANCER (21st June - 22nd July) Someone offers gifts and presents, but are they gifts or bribes? And does it really matter? Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, accept what is on offer, and have a quiet and possibly quite sexy Christmas. If someone wants a favour back for a favour given, they can wait until the New Year.
LEO (23rd July - 23rd August) Finances are quite strong so this could be quite a lavish Christmas with a lot of fiscal over indulgence.
AIR GUNS! Spring and CO2 Rifles and Pistols
If Christmas cheer can be measured as a commodity, then you should definitely be getting your money’s worth. Be warned, though, that not everyone will want to do things your way.

TAURUS
VIRGO (24th August - 22nd September) A relatively tranquil month with no major crises or dramas. Quite an easy time on the work scene, giving you chance to regroup and re-evaluate targets and ambitions. Probably a very domestic Christmas with the accent firmly on family and festive celebrations.
LIBRA (23rd September- 22nd October) This will possibly be one of the best months of your year! Awards and promotions in connection with education and careers put you in a party mood. There are some important reunions and no shortage of romantic opportunities. Christmas is a time to let your hair down and celebrate.
scorpio (23rd October - 21st November) On the one hand some longstanding anxieties and worries are laid to rest, but they will be replaced by a feeling of nostalgia for days and times gone by. There are some good money vibes between 14th and 21st – but it looks like being a Christmas of duty over desire.

Thespians at the Flying Ducks Youth Theatre have cause to celebrate – the local Sainsbury’s in Haxby have announced they’ve chosen the group as their Charity of the Year. Members Tom O’Brien and Heather Richmond decided to pitch themselves to the supermarket with performances from their upcoming production of Grease. Staff at the store were so impressed with the pair, who will be playing lovesick duo Danny and Sandy, that they decided to work with the group in preparation for the performance next year. Sainsbury’s will now work to raise funds for the theatre and increase awareness of youth musical theatre in the area. Grease will come to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre from 10th to 12th April – so it’s probably time to start digging out those leather jackets. n For show tickets, contact Michael on 768963.

take a risk? Will you
A Christmas message from Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York. I am someone who is willing to take a risk. Maybe you have seen pictures of me camping in a tent in York Minster, and going without food for eight days; jumping out of an aircraft to raise money for the families of soldiers injured in Afghanistan; and cutting up my clerical collar on the Andrew Marr Show in solidarity with those brutalised by their own government in Zimbabwe. That is not to say that taking risks isn’t sometimes scary. But I know that in seeking to be a voice for the voiceless and in caring for others, the God of love, who came to us in Jesus Christ, will be with me. The promise of Jesus Christ to be with me forever, giving me confidence to step out in absolute trust that God will be glorified in me by life or by death. This has been a tough year for many of us in York. Money has been tight, jobs are scarce, and food banks have been busy. In the midst of this
it feels difficult to take a chance on something new or different. We want to play it safe because we do not want to be let down yet again by the reckless decisions of others. Yet in this humongous uncertainty I have been inspired by the way the people of York are willing to reach out to others in their time of need. Did you know that York Minster has collected over half a tonne of food for the Middlesbrough Foodbank, and that nearly a third of those who have been helped by my online Christian giving charity Acts435, have later gone on to donate to someone else’s need? Amazing! The Christmas risk The story of that first Christmas, when God came to us in Jesus of Nazareth, is full of risks. Mary was a young woman who was engaged to Joseph who was from the line of King David. But before they were married she learnt that she was going to have

How does she explain to her fiancé and family that actually this child will be God’s Son? Joseph, being a good man, does not want to embarrass Mary in front of everyone, so he decides to call off the wedding quietly. How do you cope with the village gossip, knowing that each day people are pointing their fingers and muttering? Joseph has a dream and the angel tells him that the baby Mary will have is from the Holy Spirit. “So go ahead marry her; and when the baby is born, call him Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.” Joseph takes a risk and marries Mary and the baby Jesus is born. The shepherds were shocked by the appearance of a heavenly host of angels, but they left their sheep and ventured into their local town following the angels’ instructions. The three wise men set off on a journey with no clear destination, but they have hope and trust. But, the greatest risk of all was taken by God in Jesus coming among us as a baby, to live as one of us.
Leap of faith Well, Mary and Joseph faced their fears, took the risk, and said yes to God. And life on earth was never the same again.

a baby by God’s Holy Spirit.
I think that the life of faith has always involved taking a risk. I encountered Christ at the age of ten, when I decided I was going to give my life to Jesus Christ – and I have never looked back since! And it seems that the more we are prepared to take risks and trust to God, the more we realise that he is working in our lives. I wonder if you are willing to take a risk on God this Christmas? Are you ready to get to know God better, to love and serve your neighbours better? You could make a start by going to your local church for one of the services, or look into how you might help someone in need by donating to a Foodbank or to www.acts435.org.uk. There are also some fantastic celebrations at York Minster and all are welcome to join in. Take a risk in letting God into your life, you’ll never look back! I will be preaching at the Minster on Christmas Day at 10am. Why not join me there?

Book of Ages
The Yorkshire Museum puts a 600 year old manuscript on display, one that details York’s relationship with Richard III. We chat to Natalie McCaul, Curator of Archaeology, about what our ancestors really thought about the king. “This is an actual proper object,” enthuses Natalie, leaning over the book’s case in the museum, “one that is a tangible link to our past.” Clearly Natalie is extremely excited to have the book, on loan from City of York Archives, on display – especially during the year-long events of Richard III: Rumour & Reality. “The book,” she explains, “is essentially the minutes of council meetings starting from 1476 which documents York’s reaction to the king and everything they had to do to prepare for his visits.”
It was almost like the pub gossip of the day.
York is unique in having fantastically well preserved documents that detail everyday life in the city, dating back all the way into the medieval period. As Natalie says, it is a “grass-roots version of York’s history; a story told not by kings and lords, but by normal people living their lives.” The truth is in here The book is currently open at the pages that detail what the city had to

do when Richard first visited after being proclaimed King of England in 1483. “Although the perceived impression is that everyone in York loved Richard, the book gives us a glimpse into all the effort that had to be made and the fact that not everybody was happy about it.” It seems that the city council received just two days’ notice about what the king wanted from York during his visit. “It wasn’t just about impressing Richard,” says Natalie, “but also about Richard impressing his friends and entourage that were accompanying him. He was proud of York and wanted to show it off now that he was king.” Politics The open pages, that are quite hard to make out although they were written in English, detail the common grumbles and complaints of the councillors of the day, as well as records of court cases including one where someone was accused of saying rude things about Richard. “It was almost like the pub
The book will be open at these pages until the New Year, from which point it will be turned to the pages that detail Richard’s death in battle. “The ‘death page’ as we call it shows what York’s reaction was to the news that ‘their’ king had been killed. The famous quote abut Richard having been “piteously slain, much to the heaviness of this city” was actually very clever and political. After all, they really didn’t want to annoy the new King by saying how much they adored Richard and how they thought his killing was unjust. They had the city’s best interests at heart.” “The book really is an incredible document,” continues Natalie, “as it allows people to actually see the pivotal events in York’s history and what effect they had on the people. York does things like this very well, and the book is a part of the most comprehensive historical records in the country. It’s something to be really proud of.” n See the book for yourself at the Yorkshire Museum, or for more information visit www.richardiii-ipup.org.uk

The early bird Those of you looking for a Christmas concert with something other than Jingle Bells and Silent Night to sing along to, are in luck. From 6th-15th December York will come alive with alternative festive fervour as we welcome the return of the York Early Music Christmas Festival. Effortlessly blending traditional with modern, the festival promises a sparkling programme of seasonal music that will embrace English medieval carols and the brilliance of the baroque. Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and husband. But more importantly he is a man. As a boy he assumed he would grow up to be the guy that changes Rudolph’s nose bulb, but at 32 he finds himself writing for Your Local Link. These are his (un)manly words.
Host of Christmas Future of the extra time spent together, pretty decorations and Toffee Nut Lattes from Starbucks. We don’t want to mess it up for them.
Ah, 'tis the season... As a child Christmas for me was very much about the presents I was getting. In fact individual festive periods are remembered not for what we did as a family or for who visited for Christmas lunch, but rather as 'The Year I Got My Amiga 500' or 'Ghostbuster's Proton Pack Year'. Now that I'm the adult (honest) I'm very much interested in giving my own children a different experience and creating new traditions. For a start, we call the holiday season Yule, of which Christmas Day is just one part, as is the Solstice. Even though my daughter is only three we've always given new pyjamas and books as gifts to one another on this night, as well as other new traditions throughout the period. What we've done is de-emphasise the importance of getting presents on Christmas morning and focus on the joy of giving them instead.
24
Their Christmas will also differ from mine as we don’t watch any TV. Alongside memories of my presents I can also strongly recall what was
Making memories There's a sense of great responsibility with this; after all, our children will probably remember every Christmas they experience for years to come. What my wife and I plan for them now will affect how they feel about this time of year in the future (assuming Christmas still exists after the robot uprising). We still very much believe that Christmas is magical time of year, if only because
Instead of remembering what my dad said when he opened the present I’d got him, I remember Harrison Ford in a plane. on the telly at that time; things like Christmas specials of sitcoms, the Queen’s speech and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (which was on every year from 1990 to 1998). Again, these memories distracted me from the actual goings-on of the day, so instead of remembering what my dad said when he opened the present
I'd got him, I remember Harrison Ford in a plane saying to Sean Connery, “Fly, yes. Land, no.” D.I.Y(ule). I suppose as much as possible we try for a home-made Christmas. This means getting the wee sprogs involved with dressing the tree, decorating the house and making gifts. Well, my crafty wife makes all the gifts as she’s the talented one. I suppose I could write the Christmas cards but knowing my typographical and social skills I’d misspell everyone’s names and write “We’ve not spoken all year. What does that say about our relationship? Still, Merry blah blah etc…” Hopefully, by keeping things simple, stretching them out over several days, and taking the emphasis away from the getting and more onto the giving, the kids will always look back fondly at their childhood Chrismasses. Or, y'know, hate us for it.

And another thing...
We'll trade you Father's Day As I said, I still very much believe that Christmas is a magical time of year... that is, if you're not a dad. We dads tend to get lumped into the category of 'they’re not bothered, so we'll get them socks', usually by our own mothers. My own dear mum often utters “It's just a bit of silliness” when giving me a Christmas gift, as if to excuse what is really quite a poor effort on her part. Socks, ties (seriously, who enjoys getting a tie as a present?) and shower gift sets are fairly conventional and I'm sick of it. Listen, us dads have been chatting (on our secret internet forum) and have decided to trade Father's Day for a better Christmas. So there you go, better presents please. Mum.
Time Travel with Howard
Join me on a stroll through history. No pushing. This month my time camera is pointing at another lost church of York; St Crux on Pavement. The church, with its Italianate tower, sat at the bottom of The Shambles and was built in 1697. Francis Drake once described it as “a handsome new steeple of brick coined with stone” but by the Victorian period it was considered unsightly and was demolished in 1887. All that remains today is the church’s hall, appropriately called St Crux Parish Hall, which contains some of the monuments of the old church. I rather like it and think it would’ve have been nice to pop out of M&S and look up and see that. Stupid Victorians.

A very
good year
So another sporting year comes to a close. 2013 was the year that Luis Suarez took a bite out of an opponent, Lance Armstrong was revealed to tell more lies than Jay from the Inbetweeners, Andy Murray finally won Wimbledon and Sir Alex Ferguson retired. The Alex Ferguson book has certainly ruffled a few feathers with his choice comments about various well respected footballers including Steven Gerrard which incurred the wrath of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who questioned the merits of releasing a book of this sort in the public domain. “What goes on in the dressing room, stays in the dressing room,” was seemingly the message, yet Rodgers must have forgotten about that Channel Five reality TV show Liverpool did two years ago, with full access to the Anfield dressing room. Personally, I don’t think I can buy a book that’s imaginatively called ‘My Autobiography’! I mean, I would have expected it off the likes of Katie Price, but not someone who has been a football manager for 30 years. ‘Fergie Time’ or even ‘Hairdryers and me’ would have been much better choices.

Former York City players from the last seven decades turned out at a dinner at Pike Hills Golf Club on 7th November to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the presentation of the Bill Fenton Memorial Clubman Trophy. Former winners of the award, Gordon Staniforth, John MacPhail, Chris Topping, Dale Banton, Derek Hood and Scott Kerr, attended. The group applauded Phil Burrows, the first recipient in 1974, who presented Bill’s widow, Margo, with a bouquet of flowers displayed in York City team colours. Guest speaker for the evening was John Helm, the former Yorkshire TV football commentator and broadcaster, who told humorous stories to entertain a packed audience of former City stars and supporters. My personal favourite was his tale of following the England football team in New Zealand on a friendly tour, where a hungry Paul Gascoigne arrived for breakfast to be told he couldn’t have bacon. An irate Gazza replied “What? No bacon? I thought this was the land of sheep!” Over the last four years the past players have helped to raise over £10,000 for various local charities through their annual dinner and charity football matches. Dale Banton presented a cheque for £250 to BBC Radio York sports reporter Sharon Shortle in support of the Good Night’s Sleep Appeal for Martin House Hospice.

Minstermen magic Local highlights this year were certainly York City avoiding the unwanted piece of history of being the first team to get promoted to the football league and be relegated the following season. Luckily, Nigel Worthington came in and steered the ship to safety, and now his new look side is trying to get the Minstermen established in League Two. It is a work in progress but with the likes of Josh Carson, Wes Fletcher and Ryan Brobbel starting in recent games, optimism is slowly creeping back. Unfortunately for supporters, the Oxford United home game on 21st December is the only league fixture in the festive period to be played at Bootham Crescent, but I am sure City fans will be out in force for the 2nd Round FA Cup clash against Crawley Town, should they get through the 1st Round replay against Bristol Rovers. the heart-breaking loss to Vyacheslav Senchenko, with Fearn losing to Scott Jenkins who belongs to Hatton’s promotions.
In other local sports news, York boxer Graham Fearn came face to face with Ricky Hatton. Not for a fight, but a special media promotions event at Jaipur Spice on Haxby Road. Fearn actually fought on the undercard of Ricky Hatton’s last fight,
Now retired, Ricky Hatton attended this event with over 200 people chanting his name before a special auction of boxing memorabilia, buffet lunch and a speech – or rather, a comedy act – from Hatton himself. He told fantastic tales of his fights, his weight issues outside the ring and depression, as well as about his blossoming career as a promoter. Fearn said “Ricky is one of my heroes and I was lucky enough to speak to him at this event. He was a truly down to earth person. The chanting as he arrived reminded me of the atmosphere’s at his weigh ins. A true magical moment.”

We have all the latest news from things that go vroom!
Shhh.. she's going!
Parents, have you ever used your car as a means to get baby off to sleep? It's no surprise that the gentle sway of a car ride can send a young tot quickly off to snooze land, but according to research carried out by Mothercare, parents who do this drive on average one and a half times the distance from Land's End to John O'Groats each year! So it seems that hundreds of pounds worth of petrol is spent just getting junior to sleep. Our solution (one both your wallet and the environment will be grateful for) is to stick them in front of a driving game on your Playstation and bounce them on your knee. Nothing wrong with that, surely?
The Green Man fibs
You might have noticed that it’s got a tad chilly around here lately. Although the worst of the winter weather can often fall in January, its worth remembering that in December 2010 there were massive snow storms that brought Britain to a grinding halt. Just in case the same happens this year, we’ve compiled a list of handy survival items to keep in your car. Have you got them all? Ice scraper and de-icer. Torch in the glove box preferably something that doesn’t require batteries like a wind-up one. Jump-start cables. Spare warm clothes and blankets in case you’re left stranded. Provisions. If you’re planning a long journey, take a flask of warm drink or soup.
Wave goodbye to fiddly knobs
Gather a mob, grab your pitch forks and march on your local council office – we’re being duped! It seems that for thousands of pedestrian crossings across the land, pressing the button does nothing at all and is merely there to give the impression of control. Some crossings operate what is called a Split Cycle Offset Optimisation Technique (obviously) which involves the system monitoring the number of cars at a crossing itself before deciding when to activate the green man. Apparently this is a more efficient way of controlling both car and pedestrian traffic, but leaves us feeling a little betrayed. What’s next? Will it emerge that the alarm button in most lifts just makes the piped music louder? Say it ain’t so...
If you’ve ever been frustrated by how awkward it can be to do something as simple as adjust your car’s air conditioning, you’re not alone. The clever (and, let’s face it, incredibly rich) bods at Google have just patented a new motion control system for cars. With it you’ll be able to wave your hands about in mid-air to switch on the radio, swipe your hands near the windscreen to activate the wipers and flick your arm to adjust your chair. Sounds great, but just be careful when waving to the neighbour or trying to swat an annoying fly – you might end up laying flat on your back going 70mph with the stereo blaring and your hazards blinking. It’s a comedy sketch that writes itself.

what’s hot what’s not
What’s Hot... Kitsch Christmas Christmas just isn’t Christmas without a few naff decorations – we reckon if your tree looks totally classy, you’re doing Christmas wrong. Sure, beautiful decorations are all well and good, but you need at least one bad taste bauble. If you can’t bring yourself to buy truly tacky stuff, go for kitsch (which we would describe as ‘pretty tack’). The Gisella range at Mollie and Fred is just the ticket – it features robot snowmen and santa in a spaceship, as well as the impossibly cute owl, pictured. ♥ DIY décor ♥ No matter how gorgeous that set of antique glass baubles is, you can be certain that the decorations that you will enjoy most on your tree are the ones that your children or young relatives have made – or the ones that you made when you were little. Take the time to make a fairy for the top of your tree with a little person and feel instantly Christmassy, guaranteed. Check out our Little Stars section for some ideas!
Go for garlands Let’s face it – tinsel has had its day. No longer do we want to be picking bits of silver plastic off the furniture until the New Year. But there’s no need to stray too far from tradition, as garlands are still very much in. If you’re strapped for time or you’d like to keep your decorations until next year, there are some fantastic artificial garlands available – the one pictured from Dotcomgiftshop features lights too, so you can make your holly and ivy twinkle! There are some fantastic local suppliers of garlands too – check out the Your Garden section. £12.95, Dotcomgiftshop, www.dotcomgiftshop.com

Dummies’ guide to:
the future
Matt Todd offers further advice on the best methods of heating your home. Following last month’s short piece on heating we have been contacted by several customers, some old and some new, asking what type of heater is right for them. With so many options out there, how do you know? Whether it’s a traditional system of boiler (electric, gas, oil, bio fuel) and radiators, or perhaps storage heaters, under-floor heating or electric radiators, there are many alternatives to consider. They all do the same basic job of warming your room up but what might be right for one person could be totally wrong for
another. This month we will delve a little deeper into the different types of electric heating available and the pros and cons of each. Portable heating Starting at the budget end fan heaters are cheap to buy and are great for warming your toes, but can create cold draughts. Convector heaters
are another great, cheap, portable heater, and an easy way to top up the heat in a room. Oil-filled radiators are a little more expensive and slower to give off heat, but they do start to become more economic for heating whole rooms and for longer periods. Each of these three options is available as 2kW standard, and whilst
by definition if you have a 2kW heater on for an hour you will use 2kWh of electricity and so spend around 20p (depending on your tariff), there will be differences. The oil filled radiator will stay warm for a time after the power is turned off. The fan will quickly, almost instantly, direct heat where you want it, and the convector

Fixed room heating The examples I use here are for portable heating, but the same can be said for fixed room heating; there are differences in heat-up times, heat distribution and capital outlay as well as running costs. The best way to save money on your fuel bills is to turn your heating down – but to keep you warm, you might then need to invest in a heated onesie or throw to keep you toasty warm for around 2p a night! However, whilst you are warm, your pipes may freeze and burst, so is this the right way to go? I'd say not, but to make large savings extreme action is sometimes required! Analyse your usage So, the most important thing is to find the right type of heating for you, the way you live and the way you use your property. When looking at the options, if you have a room that is only used for a few hours a day or even a week, then storage heating may not be the best way to go as you could be heating a room unnecessarily. Whilst you can set heaters back to maintain a low heat and turn them up when required, there can be better ways to do it. If, however, you have
an economy seven meter and like to have a regular ambient temperature throughout the day, with the option to 'boost' at a given time, look no further – storage heaters are your best option.
your home
fits somewhere in between so is perfect for relatively quickly heating a room.
Get clear information Remember, any company selling you heaters or installing them in your home should be able to demonstrate they are the right product for you. It is possible that when figures are used in advertising – be it KWh, Fahrenheit or most importantly, pound notes – they can be misleading. A trustworthy business will be only too happy to explain everything clearly and to show you exactly what you’re buying. Electric radiators can be efficient, but without a comprehensive analysis of use and detailed heater specification, the area can be a minefield. Don’t be afraid to ask for comparisons between the different heater types available both in terms of the costs to buy and run them. Herbert Todd stock a huge range of heating products, from modern electric radiators to portable fan heaters. If you would like free and impartial advice please do not hesitate to get in touch. Leave a light on During the festive season, it’s even more important to protect our homes as some of us store gifts for loved ones ready for Christmas. We asked the North Yorkshire Police for some tips on deterring thieves.
Pull the wool over your floor Wool has been a much-loved material for thousands of years, but it seems that recently the nation’s adoration of the fluffy stuff has dwindled somewhat. Cue the Campaign for Wool – a nationwide marketing campaign initiated by HRH Prince Charles to rekindle our love. The folks at Style Flooring in Heworth are big fans, and they’ve pledged their allegiance to the cause. It’s not hard to see why; wool is a natural fibre that offers great heat and sound insulating properties, is fire retardant, nonallergenic, doesn’t promote the growth of bacteria or mites and is great for the environment as it’s totally renewable. n If you’d like to find out more pop in to the showroom on East Parade in Heworth, call 289266 or visit www.styleflooringofyork.co.uk

A dark, empty house is an easy target for burglars. You can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of burglary by:
3 Using outside lighting to keep your garden or driveway well lit
3 Using a timer switch to turn lights or a radio on inside the house when you’re going to be out for a while
3 Hiding your valuables
3 Locking your doors and windows
3 Leaving a light on inside the house when you go out or to bed
To report a crime or incident, or provide information, dial the non-emergency number: 101. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111. For further advice, visit www.northyorkshire.police.uk/ crimeprevention
Think it won’t happen to you? So did our Nic… “I live on a fairly quiet street, and with the crime rates in York being so low I fell into a false sense of security,” says Nic, who was burgled a few weeks ago after she forgot to lock her front door before going to bed. “I assumed that I’d locked the door when I arrived home from work, but when I woke on the Saturday morning the front door was wide open and my housemate’s bike and tin of money, with around £60 in it, was gone. The policewoman explained that many burglaries occur due to unlocked doors – I didn’t think anyone would be so bold as to try the front doors on a terraced street, but apparently it’s quite common.” Nic explains that aside from being upset about the loss of possessions, she was unnerved about the fact that someone had been in her house while she was asleep upstairs. “I was lucky really, as they could have taken much more, but all of this could have been prevented if only I’d checked the door before going to bed. Now, I’ve made it a firm part of my routine!”
As temperatures plummet and Jack Frost starts getting comfortable, it’s time to get set for the big chill. Here are a few helpful hints to prepare your home for the worst winter has to offer.
Guttering. Clear out any trapped leaves and check for leaks and cracks. As snow can gather in guttering and become quite heavy, check the fixings to make sure they are all secure. Roof. While you’re up the ladder, check your roof for loose or broken tiles and slates. Also make sure that the TV aerial is properly affixed – wouldn’t want a Christmas Day gale to cut the Queen’s speech short. Heating. Get a professional engineer to service your boiler and central heating, checking all pipework is fully insulated to prevent leaks and cracks.

Drains. Clean out fallen leaves from the grills of your drains and thoroughly clean patios and decking before frozen dirt and grime make them slippery. Safety. Check, clean and replace the batteries of all your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Fireplace. Setting your fire ablaze this Christmas? Make sure the chimney and flue is swept clean and free of debris… for Santa to climb down, obviously.

gardening Tend your garden, live forever Well, maybe not forever. New research carried out by Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, suggests that gardening, as well as other DIY activities, could help prolong your life. The study found that although rigorous exercise helps prevent heart disease, doing something gentle and regular – such as gardening – has almost
identical benefits. Thousands of people were studied over 12 years, and those who partook in daily horticultural activities were on average healthier, had a lower risk of heart disease and lived longer. So York, pick up that spade and get into the back yard! Eternal youth awaits you. And so does the compost heap.
A line of bees If you thought that the folks at chocolate giant Nestlé, whose factory occupies the old Rowntree’s site on Haxby Road, are only interested in feeding the nation their favourite sweeties, think again. It seems they are also pretty concerned about our insect neighbours as well, as new wildlife meadows are being set up across the country by the company for butterflies, bees and moths. One such meadow has been established at the York site, to act as a safe haven for endangered species that pollinate some of the world’s most important food. Including chocolate, we assume. So pretty soon residents in The Groves should see an influx of fluttering beasties making a bee-line for Nestlé.

Gnome sweet gnome The residents of Brittleby, a quiet little village in Lincolnshire, have for years been puzzled by the mysterious appearance of dozens of gnomes in their gardens. Starting in 2003 several gnomes appeared in gardens throughout the village, without any explanation. From then on the little visitors popped up every few months; at bus shelters, the village pond and by roads. The prankster has now been named as Peter Leighton, who sadly died recently of cancer, but not before asking his son to tell everyone the truth at his funeral. Apparently the villagers found it all very amusing and on the day of Peter’s funeral a single gnome appeared on his doorstep.

December is a very special month for nature lovers. See if you can spot these festive favourites. In the garden. As the month rolls on expect to see one or two elves making an appearance. They tend to hide in the bushes at the end of the garden, or peer over the wall to the back alley. Although generally friendly creatures, under no circumstances should one ever approach an elf – they are usually on official business from Santa and hate to be disturbed. After all, you wouldn't want your child to end up on the naughty list because you were overly inquisitive.

In the sky. It isn't just Christmas Eve when reindeer can be spotted whizzing by over head, as all of Santa's trusty team need a spot of practice before the big night. Sightings often occur in northern skies, usually around 10pm and can be identified by their distinct sonic boom and sound of jingle bells. Despite what you may have heard, magical reindeer aren't all that bothered about eating hay and much prefer a full English breakfast. Try leaving some sausages or black pudding on the bird table to attract them.

The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down. and draughts, though Poinsettia do need bright light, so bear this in mind when choosing where to locate your plant. Keep them at a minimum temperature of 16°C (61°F).
Whether you are given a houseplant as a gift this Christmas, or you just want to spruce up your home ready for visitors, you’ll need to know how to take care of them well if you want them to survive. Here are some tips on the best care of some of the most popular Christmas plants.
Poinsettia A firm festive favourite thanks to their brightly coloured pink, red and cream bracts, and sometimes variegated cream and green foliage, Poinsettia are often grown indoors over the Christmas period. You should keep your plant away from strong sun
Overwatering can damage Poinsettia, so only water your plant when the compost has started to dry out. Also, because any exposure to low temperatures can be harmful for your plant, protect it on the journey home from the garden centre by making sure it’s wrapped with paper around the top of the foliage. Plastic bags are also a good idea to make sure that the whole plant is protected.
Cyclamen Although they look delicate, they are actually quite tough. The showy, brightly coloured flowers come in white, vivid red, pink, purple, and bicolor. Much of the charm comes
from their intricately veined, heartshape leaves that are often marbled with silver. Cyclamens will continue to bloom happily for two to three months after Christmas. As each flower fades, remove the entire flower stalk from where it attaches to the tuber by giving it a sharp tug. New flowers will emerge from one of the many buds waiting just below the foliage. Keep your plant evenly moist in a cool north window or where

the sunlight is not too strong. Day temperatures of 16°C to 20°C (60°F to 68°F) and nights at 11°C to 13°C (50° to 55°F) are ideal. Also avoid getting any water on the tubers themselves, as this can cause rot.
Azalea Originating in China and Nepal, the Azalea is available in a range of pinks, reds, whites and bi-colored flowers. They are ideal for cool rooms in the house preferring temperatures between 10° and 17°C, and do well on light north or east facing windowsills. Azaleas should never be allowed to dry out, as this will cause any unopened flower buds to fall prematurely. Water plentifully, keeping compost moist at all times. Mist spraying will increase humidity, but care should be taken to avoid spraying the open flowers where possible.
The plant will benefit from being placed in a shady position outdoors between June and September and then returned to the house before the first frosts.
Hyacinth bowl arrangement These usually contain between three and five Hyacinth bulbs that have been specially prepared to make them produce their sweetly scented brightly coloured flowers over the Christmas period. They are best kept in a cool location to prolong their flowering period. Care should be taken not to overwater the bulbs as quite often the pots that contain the arrangement do not have any drainage holes. When the plants have finished flowering, they can be planted out in the garden as normal hyacinth bulbs.

With Christmas fast approaching now’s the time at Brunswick when jobs on the land are put on hold and our multi-talented gardening groups are found huddled around tables in the polytunnels, preparing pine cones, berries and the essential greenery used in the production of our holly wreaths. For the rest of you hardy gardeners, there are still jobs that can be done now in preparation for the new growing year ahead, although you will most likely have to work around the weather.

Be a little helper
Here’s a worrying statistic: one in four British roofs are unsuitable for landing magical sleighs on. We know, pretty alarming, especially at this time of year. To help Santa out, make sure there is ample parking in your garden by clearing a spot on the lawn or making sure your backyard is free of furniture. That way he’ll be able to land the sleigh and use his magical key to get into your house through the back door. Parents: if your garden needs a tidy this month use this reason to get the kids working.
Gut your gutters If our pre-winter maintenance tips in the property section have spurred you to check your guttering, before you shimmy up a ladder you might want to give these guys a call. GRP Technical Services are the guttering experts, employing sophisticated technology such as wireless cameras to clear blocked gutters and drainpipes. Their methods are so effective that a single experienced technician could complete the job without ever leaving the ground, saving the hassle of using ladders and hiring expensive scaffolding. Remember, prevention is better than cure – especially at this time of year. And you really wouldn’t want Santa slipping on all those dead leaves, would you? n Call 788934.

Ask Chris...
Got a gardening question?
Chris Brown from Brown’s Nurseries can help
Q.
I normally grow roses without problems, but why have some of the stems on my bushes turned brown? The most likely cause of rose stems turning brown and dying back is one of the many fungal infections described as a canker and diebacks. If the stems are not growing vigorously or have been damaged in any way they are more prone to dieback fungi and you should ensure that you are looking after your roses as well as you possibly can. I would also advise you to avoid using too much high nitrogen fertilizer or organic matter as this may promote soft growth which is more readily attacked by fungi. As far as the existing damage is concerned you should prune all affected areas as soon as possible, taking the stem back to a healthy tissue. Hopefully this, combined with a slight change in your feeding and maintenance regime, should mean your roses look better.
Q.
Can you suggest some plants for my garden, as it is quite shady? Shade is cited as the most common problems for gardeners, but it can actually be an advantage depending on the density of the shade and the soil type. There is a considerable difference between moist dappled shade under a birch tree and the dry shaded area under a conifer. Here are some suggestions for shady areas: Corydalis Flexuosa. A popular plant with dainty tubular flowers with delicate ferny foliage.
Q.
I’ve seen hedgehogs in my garden. Is it possible to give them a place to hibernate? This is the time of year when hedgehogs select their winter quarters, so try to provide them with a choice. The perfect hibernation heap is both warm and dry and must remain undisturbed. Places such as the back of borders, the gap between the compost bin in the garden fence, or the no-man’s land behind the garden shed would probably be ideal. If you decide to build a hedgehog house, you must ensure it is well ventilated. For a natural looking heap use a stack of logs and a thick layer of leaves. Just make sure everyone knows this isn’t a bonfire waiting to be burned! When they emerge from hibernation they have a voracious appetite for slugs, so it’s worth encouraging them into your garden.
Actaea Alba. Also known as Doll’s Eyes or White Baneberry. Geranium Phaeum Album. This produces masses of hanging white flowers above dense, soft green leaves. It is an excellent plant for dry shade under trees. Epimedium Davidii. This gorgeous lowgrowing perennial produces delicate lemon yellow flowers from mid-spring to summer. Hydrangea Petiolaris. Although this climbing hydrangea is widely grown its many attributes are rarely appreciated. Peeling bark, rich green leaves and creamy flowerheads make it a climbing treasure. Aucuba Japonica. ‘Crotonifolia’ aucubas are great plants for shade. Many are grown for their colourful bright red fruits.

Make your own non-melting snowman! You thought that pumpkins were only for October? Think again!
You will need: 3 Pumpkins of various sizes (e.g. two large ones for the body, one small one for the head) 3 Acrylic paint (white, black and orange) 3 Unwanted plastic lid (for the hat) 3 Googly eyes 3 Strong glue 3 Scrap fabric (for the scarf)
Before you begin, ask an adult to cut off the stalks of each pumpkin. Next, give each of the pumpkins one coat of the white acrylic paint. Leave them to dry for about a day. They will form the body of the snowman.

When the pumpkins are dry, use the black and orange paint to add a mouth and a nose. Then, use the glue to stick on the googly eyes. After you have left the paint to dry and the glue to set, it’s time to give the snowman his hat. Place the plastic lid on top of the snowman’s head, and remember to use glue if you live somewhere with particularly windy weather conditions – you don’t want the snowman to lose his hat! Lastly, place the snowman’s head on top of his body. If the pumpkins are large, get an adult to help you lift the pumpkins on top of each other. Then, tie the scrap piece of fabric around the snowman’s neck as a scarf. Finally, find somewhere suitable to put your finished pumpkin snowman!

Tracey Pulleyn of Minster Vets has the answer! Q. I have a few chickens in my back garden. Do they need any extra food or vitamins over winter? Backyard chickens should be fed mainly on commercial pellets which contain all the nutrients they require. The best way to provide this is via a hanging feeder which will keep the feed dry and clean, and minimise the risk of attracting vermin. During winter it is important to keep feeders and drinkers clean so that bacteria doesn’t build up. It is illegal to feed kitchen scraps to chickens; however, it is fine to hang up fresh greens or cabbage for them to peck at. This will give them something to do and provide them with a treat. If you choose to feed a corn treat to your hens, they should have no more than an eggcup full each per day, as they will soon opt for the tastier treats rather than the balanced diet. Supplements are available to add to the water which

would provide extra vitamins, but these are usually only necessary when moulting.
Q. Do you still need to use flea and tick treatments over the colder months? I would definitely recommend using a flea/tick product all year round. Due to the use of central heating in our houses the flea lifecycle is no longer stopped. Ticks are less likely to remain active during the winter months due to the cold. Speak to your vet and ask what product they would advise you to use. It is also recommended to use a household spray to protect the environment.

But festive family fun isn’t the only reason that we put this supplement together. As our regular readers will know, every December we include a special feature on the fantastic care provided by the incredible staff at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and the Children’s Ward at York Hospital. The Nurses, Doctors, Play Team and support staff work tirelessly all year round to provide superb care to babies, children and teenagers, but at this time of year they make an extra special effort to make Christmas on the wards as enjoyable and stressfree as possible, and we think they deserve a special mention.
Children’s Ward Up to 25 children are looked after by the Children’s Ward at any one time, with babies, toddlers, children and teenagers all catered for with excellent care and fantastic facilities such as a school room, play room and dedicated teenager room. The Play Team provide lots of fun activities to keep children entertained, and they’ve even got Santa on speed dial, so the big man himself will make an appearance at the Children’s Ward and SCBU this Christmas.
Read on to find out more from Harriet Hawkins about what it’s like to volunteer in SCBU; and Ann Elliot reveals why she has been working there for over 30 years. Plus, we find out about the fundraising stars at Huntington School and how you can help to decorate the hospital this year by using your knitting needles. None of this would be possible without the support of our wonderful advertisers, who have funded this feature – to each and every one of you, we’d like to say a big thank you. And of course, we need to thank the wonderful staff at the hospital who helped so much with the feature – we couldn’t have done it without you.
To all the staff and children at both SCBU and the Children’s Ward, merry Christmas! Merry Christmas to the Special Care Baby Unit Merry Christmas to the Childrens ward.
from
SCBU The purpose-built Special Care Baby Unit cares for up to 15 ill and premature babies throughout the year. Mums and Dads can visit whenever they like, and the nursing and support staff – and volunteers such as Harriet Hawkins, opposite– work hard to create a calm, caring atmosphere for babies and parents. And they’re not the only ones helping out; physiotherapists, social workers, pharmacists, a chaplain and staff from eye and ear departments all contribute to the babies’ welfare. Of course, this all costs rather a lot of money, and the generous donations from York residents have always been appreciated by the team.

Time well spent
We chat to Ann Elliot, Ward Sister of York Hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit.
We catch up with 24 year old SCBU volunteer Harriet Hawkins.
the grandparents, siblings and other family members, all of whom need reassuring and comforting.
What is a Ward Sister and what does she do? As Ward Sister I must ensure that the ward is running effectively and that all staff know what they are doing. I’m essentially the manager of the ward. How did you start? I worked in the Neo Natal ward in Leeds and really loved it. I came to York to work with babies and their families as I found it very rewarding. I’m still here 32 years later! What do you enjoy the most about your job? Garden I likeAstek working with the families. It’s design & build important to remember that it isn’t just the parents that are affected by a baby being ill or premature; it’s
Is Christmas a difficult time of year at the ward? It can be. Obviously people want to take their babies home with them at this time of year but unfortunately many can’t, so we need to make sure that everyone visiting is as comfortable as possible. One member of staff makes cheerful little stockings which we fill with gifts for those coming on Christmas Day. The ward never closes so it’s just another day for us. Isthereanythingimportanthappening at the ward at the moment? We’re just about to buy two new ventilator machines, the money for which has been raised by the Special Care Support Group. We’re always in need of more money to help keep the SCBU afloat and we’re extremely grateful when people and organisations donate.

What made you want to volunteer for SCBU? My interest in volunteering in a hospital was fuelled by my ambition to become a midwife, and I hoped that some experience in SCBU would give me an insight into healthcare. What are the best bits about volunteering for SCBU? The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming and always make me feel like a valued member of the team. I come away knowing that I have made a difference, even if it is just being a friendly face for parents when they come in, or ensuring that the phones and doorbells are always answered. Which aspects are more difficult, and how do you cope with them? I sometimes feel a little helpless, particularly when the staff are very busy! I try to remember that it is not my duty to provide ‘hands on’ support and that my contribution is still important. In these instances I try to ensure that I do as much as I can to ‘free up’ the nursing staff from basic tasks so that they are able to continue with their professional work.
What qualities do you think people need to have in order to volunteer? I think that you need to be committed, friendly and have good people skills. How can volunteering help the volunteers? It can give volunteers a sense of fulfilment, pride and enjoyment, whilst also providing them with some experience and insight into a particular area of health care that they may be interested in. If you are interested in volunteering at York Hospital, take a look at the opportunities available over the page.

A warm welcome
Wanttobecome a volunteer?
ThestaffatWard17arethrilledaboutthenewNurses’station,which is coming soon thanks to generous donations from the public.
If you’ve been inspired by Harriet’s story on the previous page and you’d like to help out too, York Hospital will be recruiting for new volunteers in January. Here are a few of the positions that will be available:
Clinic Liaison Volunteer
The aesthetic of the whole of the Children’s Ward is set to be transformed thanks to a revamp of the Nurses’ stations on Ward 17 and Ward 18. The stations will be made into more child-friendly zones, featuring a dip in the middle that will allow children to communicate with the Nurses. The work will cost a total of £18,000, which has been funded by the York Teaching Hospital Charity, York Children’s Fun Run, the Friends of York Hospitals and The Purey Cust Trust. Youngsters taking part in the Jane Tomlinson York Mini and Junior Run in August also did their bit, raising a whopping £2000 for the cause.
Modern design
Kat Hetherington, Art and Design Development Manager at York Hospital, says that incorporating suitable designs and visual distractions is incredibly important in all areas of the hospital, but even more so in areas for younger patients. “We are all affected by our environment, and it stands to reason that this is more prevalent when we are unwell,”
24ct
Cleaning
says Kat. “The colourful circles on the walls will become an easily recognisable theme to children as they visit different areas of the hospital. This repetition will assuage some of the associated apprehension that children experience in hospitals related to fear of unfamiliar surroundings.”
Chosen by you
The design has been chosen by patients and staff, as Hannah Coughlan, Deputy Sister, explains. “It was tricky, because we needed to find a design that will be appealing to young children while also not seeming too babyish for teenagers.” Kat adds that the bubble theme has already been installed in one of the rooms within the Emergency department at the hospital. “The colourful shapes mirror those that will be installed around the ward 17 and 18 Nurses’ station. In this instance there has been the addition of matching coloured butterflies applied to the ceiling, so that as patients are lying down, they can still see the vibrant and distracting shapes.”
Some of the duties involve informing patients about clinic procedures, keeping family and friends of patients up to date with how the patient is progressing through clinic if necessary, and liaising with nursing staff.
Volunteer Visitor This role includes offering company to patients who have no-one to talk with during visiting times, as well as logging any issues from inpatients and accompanying vulnerable patients to specific appointments.
Dining Companion This position focuses on encouraging patients to eat and drink, as well as assisting them in cutting food and opening packets, and helping to maintain patients’ dignity.

Fantastic fundraisers
The Kni t
Lots of marvellous people have raised funds for the Children’sWard and SCBU, butwereckonedtheseyoungstersfrom Huntington School deserved a special mention.
Christm as
It seems that they’re teaching them well at Huntington School. A group of International Baccalaureate students from Huntington School Sixth Form have raised a whopping £1040 for Ward 17. Katie Hemingway, Lydia Bates, Heather Munro, Ellie Johnson, Laura Mackell, Sarah Graves and Matthew Bradbury raised the cash between February 2011 and June 2013 by organising a range of events at the school, including a Halloween cake sale and a huge dance festival.
Are you handy with a pair of knitting needles? The Arts team at York Hospital need you! Staff and members of the public are clacking their needles together in aid of making the hospital a more festive place to be this Christmastime, by creating strips of knitting that will form links of giant woollen streamers. If you’ve never tried knitting before, this is a great chance to learn!
Katie Hemingway says that the group wanted to support a local charity, and the Children’s Ward seemed like the perfect choice. “We thought it would be great to choose the Children's Ward where we would be able to visit to see how the money we have raised has helped them. Also, as we were all at school together we thought it was suitable to support a charity which specifically helps children. Initially we thought we would be able to raise a few hundred pounds, so now we are so happy to have raised over £1,000 for the Children's Ward. We’d like to thank everyone who helped us to beat our goal and raise this great amount of money which we know will benefit a lot of children whilst they are in hospital.”
If you’d like to whip up a link to send to the hospital, use red, green or gold yarn – or a combination of these colours – and make sure it measures between 17cms and 20cms long and 2.5cms and 3cms wide. Any kind of stitch can be used, but please leave a 20cm end of wool after you’ve cast off. Don’t assemble your piece of the chain – just send the flat, rectangular piece of knitting.
Cath Southon, Sister on the Children’s Ward, says the money was very gratefully received. “We are always so grateful for the support our Children’s Ward receives and we would like to say a big thank you to the group for their fantastic fundraising efforts. They have raised a huge amount of money which will greatly benefit all the children who visit our ward.”

Return to the Children’s Ward
“W
orking late, doctor?” James froze in his tracks. He hadn’t expected the nurse to be there. “Mmm,” he said, nervously smiling at the older woman. “Just some last minute paperwork.” The nurse nodded, her glasses sparkling in the dim night lighting of the Children’s Ward. “Rightio. Merry Christmas,” she said as she turned back to her paperwork on the nurse’s station. James strode on, treading carefully so as not to wake the few sleeping patients that remained on the ward before entering the play area. The open space was dark, just as it had been on Christmas Eve 20 years ago. He walked up to the Christmas tree. The lights were off; the nurses must have unplugged it. “Right, where’s that socket?” he uttered. After all, he wanted to make it just as it was when he was here as a child.
you mean,” she said. “But doctor, if you’ve seen him once before I don’t think he’d appear the same way again. Do you?” James stood and dusted off his long white coat. “Perhaps not,” he said sadly. “Merry Christmas anyway.” “And to you”, she said, holding out her hand. James shook it awkwardly. She had a very firm grip for a little girl. With one last look to the dark tree, James wandered back along the corridor. “That was quick,” said the nurse, noticing him arrive. “All finished?” “Yes,” said James. “I think I am.” He turned to go home. “Oh, before I go… the little girl in the red gown; what’s her name?” “Girl?” asked the nurse, puzzled. “Yeah. Red gown, blond hair, bright blue eyes. Just spoke to her.” “Sorry doctor,” she said, checking her notes. “There are no female patients on the ward tonight. They’ve all gone home for Christmas Day.” James frowned. “But I…” His heart skipped a beat. He turned and sprinted back down the corridor, feeling a mixture of hope and shock. He reached the play area. It was lighter now, brighter. Lights danced along the branches of the tree. Beneath it dozens of presents rested peacefully, as if they’d always been there. James stood back, mouth agape. He looked around for the little girl in red, but of course she… whoever it truly was… had vanished. James smiled. “Busy tonight indeed.”
As a patient. But before James had a chance to plug in the lights, he heard a sound. Startled, he dashed across the play area and hid behind one of the large toy boxes. It was the same place he’d hidden all those years ago, when he had seen… “Hello doctor.” The voice right beside him caused James to jump and bang his head on a chair. Turning he saw that he was not alone in his hiding place. A little girl, wrapped in a red dressing gown, peered up at him with large blue eyes. She smiled. “Are you hiding too?” James, still on all fours, whispered, “Erm, yes. What are you doing out of bed?” The girl shrugged her little shoulders. “I’m very busy tonight.” She lifted a finger to her lips and pointed back out into the play area. James watched as a man in a blue boiler suit entered the room. His heart leapt. Was this the same janitor he had met all those years ago? The one who had transformed into someone else, someone magical? James noticed the little girl watch the man also, as he emptied the bins. She was here to learn the truth, just like he once had. But the man finished his chores, turned his trolley around and left. No presents were left under the tree and no blue boiler suit had turned red in the pale moonlight. James sighed. “Were you expecting someone, doctor?” asked the little girl. “Oh,” said James. “It’s just that a long time ago I saw… someone very important. At least I think I did.” The girl nodded and stood up. “I think I know who

Craft-mas Not all Christmas decorationsrequireatrip to a boring shop. Some you can make yourself and have a Santa’s sack full of fun doing so. Wreath the benefits. Don’t get this year’s Christmas wreath from the shops – get it from nature. Take a nice long walk in the woods or park and collect bendy twigs, sprays of leaves pine cones, holly and ivy. Start by making a base with the twigs, wrapping them together into a hoop. Next get a grown-up to help you build up layers of foliage and leaves, attaching the pine cones to the twig base with wire or ribbon. Once done fix to your front door with a nice big red bow. Too excited
to sleep?
Never fear, Your Local Link is here with hints and tips for getting off to snoozeland on Christmas Eve. After all, if you’re not asleep how will Santa sneak down your chimney?
Fairs fairy. Every tree needs a fairy to sit on top (and guard the presents). You can make your own with just a traditional clothes peg some fabric and wire. Draw a happy face onto the top of the peg, wrap the fabric around the clip part to make a dress and cut paper into wing shapes and glue onto the back. Decorate with glitter, paint or even wrapping paper, then simply peg her onto the top of the tree.
Clean dreams. Before bedtime have a nice relaxing bath or shower. This will help you unwind from all the excitement and be ultra-comfortable in bed. Be jammy. Make sure your pyjamas are clean and comfortable. You don’t want twisted bed clothes bugging you until 3am! Thank the cows. Have a nice warm glass of milk or cocoa before bed as this will also help relax you. Don’t have anything with too much sugar in it – you’ll get hyper.
Reindeer cheap If you want to make the windows in your house seem all festive and attractive to certain magical present givers, try this. Simply cut out some Christmassy shapes like reindeers, snowmen and trees from white paper and use a gluestick to fasten to the inside of the glass. Add a few falling snowflakes and it will be sure to draw a huge crowd of carol singers.
C A
A to Zzzzz. Once in bed, read. A good book or comic will both distract you from exciting thoughts of what is beneath the Christmas tree and will also tire out your eyes. Santa who? Once the light is off and you’re trying to get to sleep, think about something that happened earlier in the year at school or with friends. Try not to think about the next morning or the big fellow about to land his sleigh on your roof.

it’s panto season... oh yes it is! Letitsnow
Winteriscoming...
This year will mark Phil Randall’s 25th pantomime performance. We chat to the Dame who will star in the Grand Opera House’s productionofSnowWhiteandthe Seven Dwarfs
The CBeebies star talks about presenting children’sTV, a love of the stage and his favourite sandwich.
What do you think of York? I know that this is a cliché, but York is honestly my favourite place to be at Christmas time. If you have to be away from home, York is the best place to be. This is my sixth panto up here, and I love it. It’s so Christmassy. How do you cope with the quick rehearsal turnaround? I never learn my lines until the first dress rehearsal. I once learned all of my lines before we started rehearsal when I was playing an ugly sister, then when we started rehearsing the director decided to swap mine and the other sister’s lines around. Unlearning lines is worse than not learning them at all!

What are the most memorable moments from your career? I worked with Aidan, who plays Muddles in this Nov 2013 AW.pdf year’s showSTP too,LocalLink in Snow White once before. 1 As we walked onstage ready to do the kitchen
scene the cloth for the kitchen hadn’t come down, so we still had the woods set. I said, “Muddles, I think we’ll have a barbecue today,” and Aidan looked at me as if I’d landed from the moon, because he hadn’t seen that the set hadn’t changed. Eventually he realised what had happened, and I said, “That’s why you’re called Muddles, dear. Because you’re thick.” Then, the cloth eventually came down, but it got stuck halfway. I love it when things go wrong, and you get the whole audience laughing. They’re the best moments. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs will run at the Grand Opera House York from 13th – 21st December. Visit www.atgtickets.com/venues/ grand-opera-house-york or call 0844 8472322. 18/11/2013 12:51
Which do you prefer: stage or screen? I like both. Until Cbeebies I’d done no presenting work, so I was just used to the stage, so it’s really nice to do panto. Panto is just about having fun, it’s barely acting! What I like about the panto is that you get that instant feedback. People say “You must be fed up of children,” but they don’t click that actually us presenters live in the CBeebies house where there are no kids. Dick Whittington is the one panto I’ve never seen and I don’t really know, so I’m really looking forward to doing it because it’ll be a completely new experience. What’s your dream role? Ham and egg is my favourite roll. Actually, seriously it would involve some kind of antipasti, like olives, parma ham – I do love a New York Deli roll. In terms of panto, though, this sounds like a cop-out, but I’ve actually enjoyed all of the roles I’ve performed, because you just have such a good time. Last time I was in panto I played Buttons in Cinderella, and I really enjoyed that. I liked that I got the laughs but also that I didn’t get the girl, because you get sympathy from the audience. How do you cope with being recognised? Kids and parents think they know me, so what makes me really smile is someone just saying hi to me in

passing. Then they’ll quickly come back and say “I’m sorry. I don’t actually know you. You’re the bloke from CBeebies.” They must have had all sorts going on in their brain thinking that I’d be wondering which one of my mates I’ve forgotten. One time I’d taken my sister to see U2 at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. This massive hand grabbed my shoulder, and I turned around and this huge bald man said “’Scuse me bud, you see more of my wife than I do!” and I said “What?” and he said “You’re that bloke off CBeebies!” and he did a friendly punch that nearly knocked me over. Alex will star as Dick Whittington at York Barbican from 20th – 30th December. Visit www.yorkbarbican.co.uk or call 0844 854 2757.
What can the audience expect this year? Expect the unexpected! We’ve tweaked the story a bit, so that we’ve got two genies – the Jean Genie and Genie of the Bling. Originally it was going to be Genie of the Ring, but when I was drafting up the synopsis I made a typo and accidentally wrote ‘bling’. I’d never heard of that word until a few weeks ago, but it’s perfect! One of my favourite scenes is Tea With the Twankeys, which involves lots of panto farce – Martin and I sit on tall stools while the rest of the people on stage are sat on the floor around a low table, and lots of the comedy comes from us trying to serve tea, in a very awkward manner! What’s it like writing your 35th panto for a York audience? It’s lovely, because we’re just a little pantomime but we get people from all over the world coming to see us – there’s a couple who visit from Hawaii every year. They have no connection to York, but they fell in love with the place and with our show. It’s also really great to see youngsters move up through the ranks. For instance, Harry Hughes started with us in the chorus at the age of nine, and has since been to drama school and will star as the Jean Genie this year. He’s really likeable and the audience love
him, and that’s half the battle with succeeding in panto. What makes you stay in York? I love local theatre. We’re always full, and we have 850 people every night who recognise us and we’ve earned their respect. They’re a discerning lot, the Yorkshire audience. They won’t take any old rubbish. We’re not trying to be the Palladium, but we work hard – we have 14 sets and 90 odd costumes. I think the set, costume and script, as well as the audience, are the stars. Aladdin and the Twankeys runs at York Theatre Royal from 12th December – 1st February. Visit www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk or call 623568.

If you thought children's football was all about jumpers for goal posts, scruffy t-shirts and odd socks, think again. Thanks to the kind sponsorship of telecom experts LTS, the Hamilton Panthers Under Eight Football Team are now strutting their stylish stuff like a right load of bobby dazzlers. That's because their new kit, funded by the sponsorship and the team's own fundraising efforts, makes them look like a team not to be beaten. Their coach (and also LTS's Admin Assistant) Luke Stockhill says, “The kids look so smart. It gives them more confidence when they are playing to know that they look well turned out.” n Visit www.lts.co.uk

Stress can be an everyday part of our lives, and it can seem that there’s no getting away from it. However, the key is to learn to deal with it more effectively. York School of Philosophy will offer a ten-week course in everyday living that aims to do just that. You’ll discover new ways to deal with stress and emotions, calm an overactive mind and overcome limiting habits and thoughts. You’ll also explore practices to help improve your concentration, work more efficiently and enjoy stronger relationships with the people around you. The course is open to everyone – all you need is an open and enquiring mind. The course begins on 22nd January from 7.15-9.30pm at St Bede’s Pastoral Centre near Micklegate Bar. n Call 643586 or visit www.philosophyinpractice.co.uk

We knit you a Merry Christmas We all know that the greatest Christmas gifts are those that have been handmade. If you are planning to make something special for someone special this month then get along to Fletcher’s Fabrics on Auster Road, Clifton Moor. Although known for providing a massive range quality soft furnishing and dress patterns and fabrics for the past 50 years, they now also stock wool and knitting items. Popular brands like King Cole are available, as well as all the tools and kit you’ll need to get cracking on that reindeer jumper for Uncle Steve. Visit www.fletchersfabrics.co.uk or call 692984.
Community pride If you’re looking to get involved in some volunteering this Christmas, we know a local group who do plenty for the local community while also aiming to have lots of fun along the way – so much so, that you’re sure to want to carry on throughout the New Year and 2014! York Lions make up part of a worldwide network that aims to meet the needs of local communities. The motto is simply ‘We serve’, and the volunteers do so in a range of ways – by assisting disabled people, mentoring pupils and providing hospital equipment. It’s not all about good deeds though – the Lions reward themselves (and quite rightly too!) with regular social events. And, with fellow groups in 204 other countries worldwide, the chance for contact with people in other countries – and even visits abroad – makes the group an attractive one to join. York Lions are currently recruiting, so get in touch!

Making waves
Learning to swim is a great hobby for children; not only does it keep them active, but it provides them with a valuable life skill. At Stuart Bell Swim School, it’s heaps of fun, too – and at the moment, it’s also even better value than usual, with a £15 discount on the usual cost of £88 for a term of 15 weeks! Stuart has been teaching for 23 years, and he and his dedicated staff use their experience to ensure that children have lots of fun while learning in a safe environment. There’s a maximum of eight children in classes for beginners or weak swimmers, with two staff in the pool per class; and when your little one has mastered the basics they can work towards badges of up to 5000m. Classes will run from 4th January-18th April at Archbishop Holgate School on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and now in Strensall on Fridays. They’ll be rivalling Ian Thorpe in no time.

Think you have to look like a supermodel to do yoga? Think again. The experts at York Yoga Studio offer yoga for you, whatever your shape or size.
Find your style “Athletic types love Ashtanga, which places emphasis on strength and power, but gentle and restorative yoga classes are perfect for those who really need to relax, tame tension and learn to ease stress,” says Laurie Prime, owner of York Yoga Studio. “Meanwhile, Hatha yoga gives the best of both worlds, with lots of stretching and strength building balanced with relaxation and meditation.”
The typical image of a yoga practitioner is a young, tall, lean, lithe woman – and frankly, this can make it seem as though it’s not a type of exercise that is accessible to everyone. However, nothing can be further from the truth. Whether you’re a teenager or a grandma, large or small, male or female, the experts at York Yoga Studio are on a mission to show you that there’s a type of yoga to suit you.
76
Laurie adds that a good studio provides lots of different props to make all the postures accessible, so that you can get the full benefits of the poses without compromise. “A good studio offers a wide variety of yoga and other mind body practices, too, so that everyone can find the style of practice that is perfect for them. Here at York Yoga Studio we offer the lot!”
Pace yourself York Yoga Studio offer a wide range of classes, including sessions devised especially for children, and mother and baby yoga. Plus, some classes are divided into ability levels, so you can challenge yourself at your own pace amongst a group of people who are at a similar level to you. If you’d like to begin your yoga journey, the experienced teachers and therapists at York Yoga Studio will be only too happy to show you the ropes (or rather, the mat!).

Beau-ho-ho Is your calendar for this month awash with Christmas party dates for friends, family and work? All that party-hopping is going to make you busier than Santa on Christmas Eve, so it’s nice to know there is a place you can go to get your look sorted for all those social engagements. The team at Beau Beauty Salon, situated in Fitness First, Clifton Moor, offer a wide range of beauty treatments to make you sparkle. The experts at Beau Beauty can give your skin the rejuvenation it deserves with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). This non-invasive procedure can improve the overall tone and texture of your skin and reduce the visible signs of aging. IPL works by delivering bursts of light which are absorbed by the melanin in your hair, destroying the follicle from the root and causing the unwanted hair to fall out, thus preventing future growth. New IPL technology means that it now works for people of any skin or hair colour, too. Plus, at the Advanced Skin Clinic the team can offer anti-wrinkle treatments, fillers, microdermabrasion and semi-permanent makeup, as well as eyelash extensions and acrylic nails. Meanwhile, if you’re ready to relax after all of the preparing for Christmas Day, the therapists can ease your stresses with a full range of facials and body treatments. So, whatever you want this Christmas, the team at Beau Beauty have got it covered – and you’ll look so good that you won’t need any mistletoe. n Call 693453.

Christmas jumpers can be a contentious issue, but we find it hard not to smile when we see reindeers and snowflakes emblazoned on the chests of grown ups. Christmas is the one time of the year when we can all be a little more childlike (unless you work in the Your Local Link office, where we need no excuse) and so we think it’s basically your duty to be a bit silly. Plus, if you’re Krystal, you can make Christmas jumpers look incredibly chic by teaming them with a flared mini skirt, thick tartan tights and boots. We all wish we were Krystal.
This is this month to step away from: Mrs Santa isn’t sexy Sorry girls, but seeing you dressed in too-short Mrs Santa outfits kind of ruins our childhood a bit. Mrs Santa would definitely put you on the naughty list if she saw you in that. Have some respect for the mother of Christmas.
Cold Christmas Girls and boys, remember to wrap up warm this month. As Krystal explained in her column last month, the cloakroom of the pub is there for a reason – take full advantage of it!

Festive
feathers
The Great Gatsby trend is still going strong, and perhaps the most glamorous way to adopt it is with a few feathers. As it’s Christmas, you’re well within your rights to go all out – look for a dress with a feather skirt and fitted bodice, and you’ll be the belle of the office Christmas party. If you’d rather go for something a little more subtle, opt for a luxurious accessory like a clutch bag, or get a couple of feathers put in your hair for an eyecatching up do. Feather bandeau dress with jewelled bodice, £38.50, ASOS, www.asos.com
Snowy sparkle
You’ve probably guessed from our previous Hotlists that we’re fans of glitter. So you can imagine how into glitter we are when Christmas rolls around – our rule is to multiply the usual glitter coverage by ten. At Christmas at least a bit of glitter is pretty much compulsory for any office party outfit. We’re particularly enamoured with this eyeshadow from Maybelline, pictured. Maybelline Expert Wear Mono Eye Shadow, £4.09, Boots, Coney Street, 653657, www.boots.com
Studio London Smokey Eye kit We were pretty staggered by the value of this nifty little kit! It comes with a primer, applicator, eyeliner and five shadows. The colours of the shadows are beautiful – we were particularly enamoured with the shimmering ‘burnished metals’ – and they have a gorgeous texture, so they blend beautifully. Plus, there are easy to follow instructions that show you how to create the perfect smoky eye. We’re thinking that this kit is going to become a permanent staple in our going out routine! £6 Superdrug www.superdrug.com
ROCKITS Vintage Gold nail kit
£9.99
We’ve been dying to try nail caviar, so when we were offered a nail kit that featured not only that but also glitter, we jumped at the chance! The kit also includes a gold polish, and gold crown studs and stars, so you can make your nails really sparkle for Christmas! We found that two coats of the polish gave the best results, and we really loved the range of gems. However, the kit doesn’t come with an applicator, so make sure you have a pair of tweezers handy – you might also need a small dish for the glitter. All in all, though, we think it’s pretty good value for such a fun result! £9.99 Nail Rock (also available at Topshop and ASOS) www.nailrock.com

Krystal’s gems This month, Krystal shares her tips on surviving your first ever office Christmas party and celebrates buying her first car.
You WILL get through your first office Christmas party It’s that time of year again where plans for the staff Christmas do are well and truly underway. The last minute ditch attempt to lose a stone and a half in three weeks begins, and you might debate buying a new bottle of fake tan, because the one from last year has gone green. And nightmares about the ‘ice and heels’ combo come in nauseating waves every other night. Fear not! Last year I tackled my first ever staff party, and you guys can sail through yours too with these easy steps:
Stilettos – don’t! Just don’t... Ask yourself: do you want to spend January on crutches? If the answer is a no, then it’s a big no to the six inchers also. I wore high heels at last year’s Christmas do and I fell over twice, then relied on my poor boyfriend to help me around all evening and spent most of the night sat down. But hey, my shoes looked great!
Don’t bring out your bank card... Because you could end up spending a lot more money than you intended to. The Christmas spirit could tempt you to offer everyone you work with a drink, which is a lovely gesture, but if you
80
end up spending January eating value beans on toast because of your bar tab it might just not be worth it. Plus, didn’t you want to buy those reindeer socks in the January sale? Get your Christmas generosity out of the way before the staff do by doing more tea rounds, or even bringing some handmade gifts into the office, if you’re scared of feeling like a Scrooge.
Get your Christmas generosity out of the way before the staff do by doing more tea rounds Dance like nobody’s watching... Because if you can’t dance how you want to at Christmas, then when can you? This one ties in with the stiletto advice – you can’t dance all crazy with six inch heels on; well, I can’t. And if anyone wants to bring up your moves in January, you can simply state – ‘darling, that was so 2013. Keep up!’
Get your glitter on... Here at the Your Local Link office we’re pretty big on glitter all year round, but if you’re not one for sparkle and shine 24/7 then give it a go this Christmas. There’s nothing more festive than those red Dorothy shoes you’ve had in your wardrobe for six months.
I have bought a car. Hurrah! For some strange reason I had presumed that after I passed my driving test, a car and various other associated obstacles that come with it would fall into place. Little did I know there’s no such thing as the car fairy. A nifty little Fiat 500 didn’t appear on my drive overnight; and no, insurance isn’t £20 pounds a month. So if you are a new driver and you’re looking for a car to buy, I feel your pain. After three solid days of surfing the world of Auto Trader, Gum Tree and eBay I finally found a little car that was in my price range that hadn’t done over 150,000 miles, and that “started first time every morning” (people tell me this is a good thing? Cars aren’t just expected to start every morning, this is an achievement. Something to be noted down – Yep check it out guys, this one works! Every single day!) However, when I called up about the little car, it had been sold the previous day. That’s the other thing about cars – they sell like hot cakes. Hot cakes shot from a catapult. Luckily I eventually found a gorgeous little motor though, and this month I’ll be officially let loose on the streets of York. If you see any cars with a green P on the back, be nice!
