Grand days out Ah, August once again... This is the one month of the year when parents across our fair city really have to up their game quite a bit. With the school holidays in full swing, and with the wee sprogs staring up at you with doey-eyed hope, you really need to find something for them to do. Fortunately we are here for you once again, bringing happiness and fun to a doormat normally reserved for bills and angry letters from your neighbours demanding you fix their smashed greenhouse (just us?). Apart from all the usual local news, info and silliness, we have of course got a bustling events section which lists everything that’s worth getting involved with this month.

And grand days out are something we excel at. The Your Local Link office (just like the rest of Yorkshire) were out in force to cheer on the riders of the Grand Depart, with most of us catching the very start of the amazing day at the racecourse. Our writer Howard caught the cycling action from a friend’s front garden off Clifton Green, and as the peloton zoomed passed his view through the garden hedge offered Howard the most exciting nine seconds of his life. Oh well, he’s looking forward to a better seat next year. It is coming back again next year, isn’t it? Thankfully your view of this month’s mag is much better. Turn the page and enjoy your August!

Musical theatre tickets

We were all a little worried when we heard about our new ghost competition, with Gini concerned about where we'd put the ghost until someone won it. Then we realised the competition was for tickets to see Pick Me Up Theatre's new production of Ghost The Musical and we all started singing The Righteous Brothers. That's right, the hit film from 1990 is now a hit West End and Broadway musical and you can see it for yourself at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, 8th-16th August. Visit www.pickmeuptheatre.com We have two pairs of tickets to give away for the Monday 11th performance, so for your chance of winning a pair of tickets to the show, all you have to do is answer this question: In which year was Ghost released in cinemas? Time Travel

Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. This month: grays court

Tucked away behind The Treasurers House, in the shadow of that big church in the centre of town, lies a hidden gem of history. Grays Court is a country house in the middle of a city and is considered to be the oldest continually occupied house in England, with parts dating back to 1080. Now a boutique hotel, Grays Court has a colourful past. Treasure chest Although they might not have been very nice to York’s 11th century citizens, we have the Normans to thank for the existence of Grays Court. Originally created by the first Norman Archbishop of York as a home for York Minster’s Treasurers, the building was built on top of Roman remains and directly off the

Via Decumana, the northern Roman road out of the city (now Chapter House Street). In 1860 the owner of the house, William Gray, undertook his own archaeological dig in his garden directly next to the city walls. He found part of a stone building, some 4th century Roman coins, glassware and stamped tiles. He also found a carved stone sculpture of a man which today can be seen in the Yorkshire Museum. The stone pillars downstairs in the Lower Gallery, which help to support the gorgeous 90ft Long Gallery, are thought to be reused Roman columns. Turfed out Following Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries, Grays Court was

"surrendered" to the Crown and the Treasurers were kicked out. The house was then gifted by Henry's son, Edward VI, to Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset. Just two years later the building came to Sir Thomas Fairfax, the man who was leader of the Roundhead Army during the Civil War prior to Oliver Cromwell, and who played a prominent role in the Siege of York. Probably because the Royalists in the city wouldn't let him go back to his house.

Honour demands In 1674, after Fairfax had sold the house to George Aislable, a duel took place in the grounds. Aislable and combatant Jonathan Jennings were fighting over a woman, Miss Mallorie, whom both men fancied. Instead of an arm wrestle or a thumb war, it was pistols at dawn; the start being heralded by the ringing of the Minster bells. Jennings clipped Aislable in the arm, possibly severing an artery, as the man later died in the Long Gallery. Grays Court then fell to his son, John, who was MP for

Ripon and also later Chancellor of the Exchequer. An infamous politician, John served a prison sentence in the Tower of London for fraud surrounding the South Sea trade fiasco in 1720. Big names Grays Court has seen its fair share of famous visitors. King James I dined there one evening, knighting some local nobles in the Long Gallery, and also James II stayed there in 1679. William Wilberforce, MP for Hull and leader of the anti-slavery movement, stayed there often during the early 19th century, and - this is the biggie - ITV's Heartbeat was filmed there in the 1990s. Wow! Difficult to wrap In 1878 the owner of the house, Edwin Gray, was also the Lord Mayor of York. As he (and therefore all his

forbears) had owned the city walls onto which Grays Court backs, he decided to gift the 300 metre stretch of fortifications to the city of York. That is why to this very day Gray Court retains the only private entrance to the walls anywhere along the entire two mile length. Thanks to this donation (and to the great people like William Etty who fought to keep the walls being completely demolished in the 1800s) we can now enjoy a lovely walk with stunning views. Anything but Gray. Today Grays Court is a boutique hotel and restaurant that is also open to non-residents. Pop along, order afternoon tea, and soak up the history. Visit www.grayscourtyork.com

The ups and downs of life as seen by our very own (very) grumpy, (almost) old woman

It all started, as these things often do, with a nude man and a pencil. My friend Debbie somehow persuaded me that taking an evening class in Life Drawing would be a better way of spending a Friday night than curled up on the sofa with a Chinese takeaway and a good box set. And for some reason, I believed her. Even though our previous attempt at a Street Dancing class was more travesty than Diversity (I have no co-ordination, and Debbie looks dire in a tracksuit). Anyhow, to cut a long story short, the Life Drawing didn’t go too well. It

12

Class act

might have gone better if we hadn’t started giggling like schoolgirls the minute the model got his kit off. And then Debbie broke her pencil while shading in a certain part of his anatomy, and that set us off again. In the end, we agreed with the tutor that maybe the art world wasn’t ready for our particular talents. But it made me realise one thing. Not just that I would never be another Tracy Emin, but that I loved evening classes. These days, I’m a sucker for self improvement. The excitement starts as soon as the September

programme lands on the mat (have you had yours yet?). From massage to first aid to finding my family tree – you name it, I’ve tried it. I’ve learned a lot, and made some good friends.

But it hasn’t all been a success, I must admit. For instance, I left Yoga before the first session was over. When I say ‘left’, I was asked to leave. Snorting with laughter at the words ‘Downward Facing Dog’ is disruptive to the rest of the class, apparently. The Cardcraft For Christmas was another debacle. I won’t go into details, but suffice it to say my friends all got cards from M & S that year,

and I couldn’t look at a glue gun for weeks. Mainly because my eyelids were stuck together. As a seasoned self improver, I’ve come up with a few tips on evening classes, if you’re thinking of signing up… Take a friend with you. This can help when motivation starts to flag, usually somewhere around week four or – if you’re my friend Debbie – about ten minutes after you’ve taken your coat off. You have to make sure you’ve picked the right friend, though. It’s very hard to concentrate on your French conversation with someone

continually whispering in your ear that you’re missing two for one mojitos night in the Slug & Lettuce. Befriendly–butnottoofriendly. Evening classes are a great way to make new friends. But beware making eye contact with the bloke in the anorak, especially if he tells you he’s only there because his therapist/ probation officer thinks will help his anger issues.

“I couldn’t look at a glue gun for weeks” If you do want to meet a man, choose your class carefully. If you’re looking for a millionaire playboy, you won’t find him in Basic Bike Maintenance. Cooking For One may seem like the ideal place to meet singles, but only if you want to spend the next three terms listening to him sobbing about his divorce. Seriously, though, if you choose the right class it can lead to a lifelong passion. My friend Anna started a successful business making and selling greeting cards after taking an evening course. Now, if only I could find a way to cash in on my talent as a card-making massage therapist, I’d be laughing…

Horoscopes August 2014

Starsign of the month... Leo

(23rd July - 23rd August)

here are a few famous faces you share your sign with

by James Christie n For details of private readings phone 07884 107100 or 01423 339770 Email: jcp@magepublishing.co.uk

This may turn out to be a month of fights and arguments, especially if you insist on sticking your nose into someone else’s business. The first week in particular should see you having to deal with several very tricky situations at the same time, and like it or not, you’ll be placed in the position of having to take sides in someone else’s quarrel. Things calm down around the 9th, but by the 11th or 12th everything is up in the air again. As mentioned last month, a younger male seems to be instrumental in causing a few problems that everyone could do without. An older female has a very calming influence and she should be successful in pouring oil over troubled waters, but not until after the 20th, by which time a few things will have been done that cannot easily be undone, and a few things will have been said that can never be unsaid.

(24th August - 22nd September)

(23rd September- 22nd October)

(23rd October - 21st November)

(22nd November - 21st December)

A romantic month, especially for females and gentlemen who are in touch the feminine side of their nature. Friendships and partnerships tend to dominate, and there is a powerful emotional energy that does a lot to heal a few old wounds. Finances become stronger when single people join forces and share the bills.

August is a month for thinning down – yes, maybe your waistline, but also your financial commitments. There is a process of getting rid of the old to make way for the new, and this energy affects everything it comes into contact with. You’ll start appreciating what you’ve got rather than chasing after what you haven’t!

The bright vibes of July tend to come crashing down in August when too many people are intent on running your life for you. Rise above it, do your own thing – even if it means upsetting someone who can’t have it all their own way. There is excitement in relationships, some of it quite turbulent, some of it hedonistic.

There is a little head of steam causing a subliminal degree of resentment when other people can’t or won’t see your point of view. Trouble is, they can actually see it, but they just don’t agree with it – and they’re not inclined to back down. You can fight on principle, but maybe you should question whether or not it’s worth it.

14

(22nd December - 19th January) Possibly quite a rough start to the month but as it progresses you find a state of equilibrium. Some nice travel aspects around the 26th 27th and 28th with some money being spent on leisure and pleasure… which presumes you’ve got a bit to spend! Early August tensions ease off as a lover or partner becomes a lot more relaxed and co-operative.

aquarius (20th January - 18th February) A number of worries that gave you a hard time in July now seem to be passing, and even if you don’t approve of everything that is happening around you, you can at least take a philosophical view and go with the flow. This eases family tensions and makes some of your work routines significantly more productive and enjoyable.

PIscES (19th February - 20th March) Anything to do with property is well aspected throughout August. Certainly, money spent on the home is a good investment – the only trouble is you’d rather be spending it on something else and your financial reserves just won’t stretch that far. The impulsive among you will go out a buy a new car or book an expensive holiday.

aries (21st March-19th April) New toys for some, new loves for a few, and new feelings of self

confidence for just about everyone. A lot to show off, a lot to feel happy about, and a lot to get you through the shortening days. Homecomings and reunions are relevant throughout the month. Finances are sound, but there should still be friction with a partner re. priorities.

the best of york

Capricorn

taurus (20th April - 20th May) You’ll be under pressure to get something finished before the end of the summer. Concentrate on this challenge because it will lead to stronger finances. An argument with a partner over financial priorities looks likely, and you’ll be inclined to stick to your guns even though this may cause further friction down the line.

GEMINI (21st May - 20th June) Everyone tells you what to do, but not how to do it, and you’ll not be able to do right for wrong. This leads to some heavy moods between the 8th and the 22nd, but with things perking up around the 23rd when either an obstacle is removed from your pathway or you find an ingenious way around it.

CANCER (21 June - 22nd July) Cancerian females find themselves getting involved with feminine groups of like-minded ladies. Younger Cancerians seem to be on the move, either on holidays or projects that take them away from home. Cancerian gentlemen have a good financial month, but they’ll be keeping secrets and playing their cards close to their chest.

h Birthday blues

h First date nerves

I know what my boyfriend is getting me for my birthday and I’m really disappointed. I hoped he’d get me a Pandora bracelet, but I’ve since secretly found out he’s bought me an iPad Air. I know they’re expensive, but it’s not what I wanted. Should I drop some heavy hints between now and my birthday? Or should I just feign happiness on the day? Julie, Heslington

I’m a 40 year old, recently single man. My question is, how does one behave on a first date? It’s so long since I’ve been out on a date with a woman, I have no idea what to do. Any advice? TW, Dringhouses

He got you an iPad. You wanted a bracelet. And you are ‘really disappointed’? Oh, puh-lease. You don’t even know what disappointment is until you have a boyfriend who buys you an extension lead for your birthday (all right, I did need one, but all the same...) When you open your present, you shouldn’t need to feign happiness. Be thrilled that someone has bothered to buy you anything. And one last plea: please don’t use your beautiful new iPad to write to me ever again.

18

You’re probably asking the wrong person, since the last first date I had was so long ago it involved a brandy and Babycham in the Cat’s Whiskers. But for what it’s worth here are a few dating do’s and don’ts… Do dress to impress. No woman in her right mind would want to go out with a man wearing a vest saying ‘Sun’s Out, Guns Out’, or any other slogan boasting about a part of his anatomy. If in doubt, just pick something clean. Do listen. You don’t have to be interesting, just be interested. But not to the point where you seem like a creepy stalker. Don’t moan. You hate your job. Your ex is giving you grief. Your life might be terrible, but here’s the thing – NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR ABOUT IT. It’s a first date, not an audition for Jeremy Kyle. Do relax. The best that could happen is that you make it to a second date. The worst is that you’ll end up with a funny story to tell your mates. Either way, you win. Good luck!

h Football crazy My husband runs a kids’ football club and our 12 year old son is their star player. He’s also a keen musician and recently asked me if he could give up the football for drama and dance lessons instead. My husband was furious when he found out and really let rip at our boy. He’s still playing football and my husband thinks the situation is resolved, but I’m not happy. JG, Haxby Neither is your son, I imagine. For crying out loud, what is your husband’s problem? The boy’s asked if he can try dancing, not heroin. Surely his dad can’t be this upset just because he’s about to lose his prize midfielder? If you ask me, I reckon your husband’s got some serious issues here. But if he carries on acting like Alex Ferguson on steroids, then he risks ruining their relationship forever. Rather than getting upset that his son will never be Steven Gerrard, he should be proud that he has the strength of character to try something new.

h Beer goggles I drank very heavily for a couple of unhappy years but now I’ve turned my life around. I don’t drink, I eat healthily and I exercise all the time. But unfortunately, my new lifestyle has ruined my looks. I used to be fighting men off but now they hardly look at me. What can I do? I’m 30. MN, Acomb. I’m no expert, but I don’t think eating salad and doing aerobics could turn you into a 30 year old Dot Cotton. Has it occurred to you that those men were probably after you because you were a drunk party girl? Now you’ve got some self respect back, it stands to reason some men aren’t going to be interested. Fortunately, that’s not the kind of man you’d want anyway. Good for you for turning your life around. Now concentrate on finding a man who appreciates the new you.

world cup withdrawls

it takes two

Anyone else getting withdrawal symptoms now that the World Cup has now come to an end? The four year wait has now begun. What a tournament it was, and for me, the best since the first one I watched back in 1994. In fact it started pretty similarly; horrifically bad TV when Jennifer Lopez strutted her stuff in the opening ceremony, despite no one turning her mic on; almost as embarrassing as Diana Ross back in USA’94 blasting a penalty wide. Thankfully, football saved the day with some fantastic matches, bad Brazilian defending and memorable goals. All this, whilst England once again proved to be well off the pace though like people said in the build-up – no European team was ever going to win it in South America!

The football fix is soon back upon us with the Premier League, and, more importantly, League Two begins again. York City will be bidding to go one better than last season, and have a sustained automatic promotion push to try get into League One. Nigel Worthington’s first full season in charge took a while to get going, and wins pre-Christmas were hard to come by. He will no doubt be looking to avoid a repeat with August home games, including the triple header against Doncaster Rovers (League Cup game, 12th August), Northampton (16th August) and Cambridge (19th August). Finally, Wycombe arrive at Bootham Crescent on 30th August.

once bitten Despite the fantastic spectacle of the World Cup, many people are still talking about Luis Suarez, a man who stayed in the queue for teeth while God was handing out brains. If I had a pound for every person who said he just fancied an Italian, I would be, well, £5 richer; but someone did point out that putting meat in front of an Italian player’s name does make for interesting meal ideas. Whether it’s a Lamb Buffon, Pork Ballotelli or indeed; a Chicken Chiellini.

spokespeople Since my last column York has all been about the Tour de France, and it’s funny to think that even with all that build-up, if I had sneezed I would have missed it. My favourite bit had to be the local police giving high fives to the crowd – no wonder Lance Armstrong got away with it for so long! When I got home, I sat back and looked forward to seeing my wave on TV, only for ITV to go for an advert. It’s all well and good that those cyclists can cover 22 miles in a day but I couldn’t help but think having those old style bikes with a basket and bell on the front for every competitor would have made it more interesting.

that’s cricket

August sees the cricket season go into its final stages with Yorkshire looking to have a strong end to the season. Yorkshire will take on Sussex in the County Championship from 15th-18th August, with other fixtures in the month including the London One-Day Cup with games versus Worcestershire at Leeds (7th August), Essex (at Scarborough on 11th August) and Derbyshire two days later (at Scarborough, 13th August).

radio gaga The team at York Hospital Radio, the charity radio station that has recently celebrated its 50th birthday, are on the lookout for new volunteers. They particularly need people for their sports team, ‘Sports Backup’; a team vital to the station delivering sports programmes. Whilst the new football season gets underway, a member of the Sports Backup team typically records live feeds from other reporters around the UK to give the York Hospital listeners updates from all different sports across the country. An interest in sport, and particularly football, is an advantage but not

essential. York Hospital Radio need as many people behind the mic as they do on the front line, and all they are really after is a bit of commitment on a Saturday afternoon and the ability and enthusiasm to work as part of a team. Full training is provided to all new members. Anyone interested in fulfilling this rewarding role, or indeed other areas at York Hospital Radio, should contact Phil Bewers via his email (phil. bewers@yorkhospitalradio.com) or visit www.yorkhospitalradio.co.uk for more details.

Happy

YorkshireDay

The first day of August is, of course, better known round these parts as Yorkshire Day. To celebrate, here are some facts and figures which go a long way to prove that Yorkshire is the best county of them all.

Scarborough is the country’s oldest seaside resort and during the nineteenth century possessed Europe’s largest hotel.

24

• Yorkshire is the largest county in England at 2.9 million acres.

• Yorkshire has a third of the total area of National Parks in the country, those being the North • There are more acres of York Moors, most of the land in Yorkshire than Yorkshire Dales and part there are letters in a bible. of the Peak District. • York's St Peter's School is • 17% of Yorkshire is the third oldest school in designated as 'Green the western world. belt' land, compared to • York Minster is Northern Europe's largest gothic cathedral and possesses the largest medieval stained glass window in the world. • Ripon is England's oldest city, having gained a royal charter in 886AD.

the national average of 13%.

North Yorkshire’s coastline boasts 200 metre high cliffs by Bouldy - the highest anywhere on the East Coast.

• Brompton, just outside Scarborough, hosted the first ever human flight in a heavier-than-air craft.

• Sheffield FC is the oldest association football club in the world, having been founded in 1857.

• Doncaster’s St Leger is the oldest and longest horse race in the world.

• Mother Shipton's Cave in Knaresborough is the oldest registered visitor attraction in Britain, opening in 1630.

• The West Yorkshire Playhouse stages more productions each year than any other theatre outside of London. • Tourism in Yorkshire is worth £7 billion, a greater amount than that of Denmark and Ireland. • 216 million people visit Yorkshire each year roughly the same number of people who go to all of the worldwide Disney resort theme parks.

• In the Dales you’ll find England’s largest single drop waterfall, Hardraw Force, and also Britain’s highest pub, the Tan Hill Inn, at 1,732ft above sea level. • The population of Yorkshire, 5.3 million people, is equal to that of Norway and greater than half of all the countries on the planet.

• ASDA, Morrisons and Marks and Spencer all started life in Yorkshire.

A Yorkshire crop

Will you be celebrating Yorkshire Day on 1st August with a traditional Yorkshire pud? If so, why not pop another Yorkshire delicacy on the side of your plate... rhubarb. Yorkshire is the UK’s main producer of rhubarb, in the triangle of land between Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield. But, due to some unseasonably bad summers over the past few years, rhubarb production is at an all-time low. No longer just the go-to ingredient in rubbish school dinners, rhubarb saw a renaissance over the past decade as TV chefs flocked to the Yorkshire veg’s camp because of the health benefits it offers. Our advice: get to the supermarket now and stock up. We’ll be round for some tarts soon.

York Theatre Royal awarded almost £2.9million The team at York Theatre Royal are delighted to have received £2,850,000 towards their £4.1million Redevelopment Project from Arts Council England. The award is the most significant investment since the 1967 foyer extension, and will see the theatre close for eight months in March 2015. The foyer space will be increased, the auditorium reconfigured and refurbished, and the whole building will be made more accessible. It's a double celebration for the theatre, which has also recently received confirmation of its continued status as a National Portfolio Organisation. This means that the team will receive an annual grant from Arts Council England to support their work over the next three years. n Visit www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk

Taking care One of York's leading care providers is happy to announce that following continued success and investment they are moving to bigger and better premises. Heritage Healthcare provides home care to more than 60 clients in and around York, offering the very best in personal, tailored care. However, that number is set to increase dramatically as the company expands, takes on more staff and relocates to new, self-contained offices on Green Lane, Rawcliffe. Manager of the new York office, Sarah Dowell, said of the move: “The new premises suit our business needs much better, particularly as the York business grows. As well as being self-contained we have control over our own operation, including phone systems, broadband and services, which is important as we take on more staff and clients.” Heritage Healthcare's growth is not only limited to offices however, as over the next year the company hopes to double its workforce. The creation of 25 new jobs within the healthcare sector is certainly a great boost for York's economy, and will help ensure that more clients in the city and the surrounding villages will further benefit from the high quality domiciliary care and healthcare services Heritage Healthcare provides. n If you would be interested in filling one of these new vacancies, visit www.heritagehealthcare.co.uk

What's right for you? As the new academic year dawns, that is a question you might be asking yourself as you consider your higher education choices. Hopefully all will go well on 14th August when A Level results are published, but what if things don't go to plan? Having a back-up plan prepared in the event that your grades aren't what you - and your first choice university - were expecting. Researching subjects related to the one you were hoping to study, as well has having an idea about where you'd like to spend the next three years, is a great way to get a foot-up during the clearing process. Thankfully we know of place that might be able to help... and it's only a stone's throw away. On 16th August York St John University will host an Open Day, allowing potential students to see what all the fuss is about. Meet the staff, find out about the many varied degree courses on offer, chat to current students and check out the facilities (which may or may not involve a trip to the Union bar). Regardless of what happens on results day, studying at York St John could be the best choice to make. n To book your place onto the Open Day, visit www.yorksj.ac.uk/opendays

Each of the lucky 170 guests in attendance will be walking away with a free hamper filled with items from great Yorkshire businesses... which is where you come in. For this special feature we take a peek behind the scenes of one of York’s best loved, and most important, charities.

way back when

Beginning life way back in 1987, the aim of York Against Cancer has always been the same; to improve the level of care given to cancer patients, raise funds and awareness of cancer, and to pioneer research into cancer cures. Started by two surgeons, Steve Leveson and John Craven, who, along with research scientist Colin Garner, believed that facilities for cancer patients in York, as well as the level of support they received, could be better. Jack Birch, local businessman and ex-Lord Mayor, was appointed as the first chairman. Since then York Against Cancer have worked alongside York Hospital and the University of York to establish the Cancer Care Centre at the Hospital and to set up the Jack Birch Unit of Molecular Carcinogenesis at the University.

did you

know...? A key focus of York Against Cancer's research is bladder cancer which is a particular problem in some parts of Yorkshire because of our industrial legacy. York Against Cancer go into primary schools across York to talk to the children about sun awareness. They also give every receptionaged child a free sunhat. Scientists still don’t know what causes most cancers.

leading the

charge We grab just five minutes with Julie Russell, General Manager of York Against Cancer. “Donating isn’t just about money,” says Julie while speaking about what the charity really needs to survive. “Time is what is important. Not everyone has any money to spare, but most of us have a bit of time. That’s what we really need - people’s time to get involved and make a difference. That is what raises the money after all.” Julie, who has been with the charity for nine years, never actually had any designs to manage it. “I started out as an accountant, working on the books. It wasn’t until about six years ago that the position of General Manager became available - so I went for it. I consider myself extremely fortunate that I got the job as I

inclusive...

When talking of the charity’s most vital resource, the volunteers, Julie says that everyone is welcome to get involved. “Young and old, man, woman and child; all are welcome. I see it as the more different kinds of people are involved and giving us their precious time, the more the message of the charity is getting out there into different groups. We genuinely do want to hear from everyone and anybody to see what they can do to help.” really do have the best of both worlds here. I not only get to be involved in the decision making process for York Against Cancer, but I also get to meet and work with our team of volunteers and all the patients we help. I get to see the bigger picture; it’s very rewarding.”

“After all, she stresses, “cancer is not selective; it doesn’t discriminate. Cancer can effect anyone in any walk of life, so to fight it we have to do the same. The more people we have volunteering, the stronger we are against it.”

did you know...? A change in lifestyle, including exercise and diet, could prevent over 30% of cancers.

Two thirds of us will never contract the disease, and of those who do, 75% will beat it!

On the buses Care... with a sea view

For the past eight years York Against Cancer has provided more than just vital care, support and research in the battle against the disease. As York isn't able to offer radiotherapy treatments to cancer patients, the charity operates a week-daily bus service from the city to Leeds. This enables cancer sufferers to receive the treatment they need without having to worry about how they are getting there. York Against Cancer employs two part-time drivers who have the honour of ferrying people each day over to Leeds. These two stalwart chaps take all the hassle out of getting to St James University Hospital, aided in no small part by the charity's minibus. But, after nine years of loyal service, and thousands of miles clocked, the bus is on its last legs (or rather wheels).

Wheely good cause York Against Cancer needs your help. To keep the vital daily trips to Leeds going - something that is an actual lifeline to many - they need to raise £150,000 as soon as they can. The

Caring for people with cancer doesn’t just mean administering treatment - sometimes the best way to help is to offer a change of scenery and a break. York Against Cancer excels in this, and can offer cancer patients and their families from York a few nights away by the sea in their own private apartment.

money will not only go toward buying a brand spanking new minibus, but also to maintaining it and keeping it going for years to come. This is where you come in. York Against Cancer are appealing to local businesses to come up with some fun fundraising ideas to go toward saving the minibus service. August is a great time to raise some cash at work, as a whole host of outdoor pursuits become possible. Sponsored bike rides, walk-to-work weeks, and

(and this will definitely appeal to most people) a sponsored 'lob wet sponges at the boss' day. Sounds fun! n Got an idea and want to help? Call 764466.

Able to accommodate seven people, the flat overlooking Whitby harbour has some gorgeous views out to sea and toward the romantic abbey ruins. What is great is that anyone can apply to stay there for a few nights with their family, regardless of where in their treatment they are - and it’s all paid for by York Against Cancer. n If you, or someone you know, might like to get away from the stresses of cancer treatment for a few nights, call 764466. hear from the troops

We chat to one of those hard working volunteers, Diana Ridley, about how and why she gives up her time for the charity. the lead up to Christmas, we pack thousands of Christmas cards. The charity also has an annual street collection which requires a large number of volunteers to help. We have some excellent bakers amongst us, so the cake stalls at events such as St. Crux Day are always popular.

What have been your favourite and most memorable times with York Against Cancer?

What got you involved with York Against Cancer?

What sort of things do you do for the charity?

TIMEFOR A Following both my late husband and I being diagnosed with cancer I decided I wanted to put something back into society. I already knew of the work of York Against Cancer through friends in the community where I live, so that was the charity I decided to approach.

I help in the office doing whatever is required such as pricing goods and cards. I also work shifts at the gift shop in York Hospital on a rota basis. We attend stalls and events organised by others in support of York Against Cancer selling items or raffle tickets. And, every year in

The most memorable times are when targets to achieve projects come to fruition, and working at the hospital unit is great because that is where we hear so many marvellous comments.

Would you recommend volunteering? I would most definitely recommend volunteering!

know...? The research funded by York Against Cancer takes place in the Jack Birch Unit – a custom built laboratory at the University of York. The most common cancer for men is lung cancer, followed by prostate cancer, while for woman it is breast cancer, followed by large bowel cancer. Not to scare you, but... our bodies make between 200 and 1000 pre-cancerous cells every day, but fortunately our immune system removes them.

Upcoming events and ways to get involved with York Against Cancer

11th October

York Rocks Against Cancer, Grand Opera House.

9th August Run or Dye, Castle Howard

This is a 5k run with a difference! Every so often along the course the joggers are pelted with colourful dyes and paints, keeping this fun run extremely interesting... and colourful. York Against Cancer are involved with this event, taking place just up the road at Castle Howard, but not in a way you’d expect. They are looking for volunteers with strong throwing arms (and a desire to chuck paint at strangers) to man the dye stations, where the runners will be given a splash of colour. Sounds like a great way to spend an August afternoon! n Call 764466.

27th September Street Collections, York.

A rocking evening awaits once again, as the charity presents one of the best nights out of the year. Returning to compere the musical feast is friend of the mag Tony Audenshaw (Bob from Emmerdale) as well as his rock group including other Emmerdale cast members. Also appearing are The Grand Old Uke of York, Unit 8, Beth McCarthy (from the BBC’s The Voice) and local rock outfit Guilty Pleasures. n Book your tickets today by calling 0844 8713024.

This day is by far the easiest way to get involved with York Against Cancer. They are looking for friendly types to take up a bucket and get out onto the streets to collect shoppers’ spare change. If you’re worried about being stuck out there all day, don’t; each of the collection volunteers do just an hour at a time. Practise your smiles and get your bucket shaking skills in order! n Call 764466.

Car Maintenance Tips We have all the latest news from things that go vroom!

Making sure your most precious cargo is safe in the car

One Jag Prescott

“She always found it very difficult to get out of my low slung sports car. And the boot was so small she could only fit two hat boxes in!” Apparently the reason for selling one of the cars is that “I’ve decided to do my bit for the environment.” John, 1998 is calling... it says you’re too late.

Yorkshire politician, and former Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott was infamous in the 1990s for owning two Jaguar cars, while seeming to champion the working class cause. Now it seems that Prescott has had a change of heart as he is selling one of his jags. “Pauline is delighted,” Prescott said of his wife’s thoughts on the sale. 004 RC 0912 24/07/2012 17:11 Page 4

• The law states that all children travelling in the front or rear seat of any car or van must use the correct child car seat until they are either 135cm tall or 12 years old (whichever one comes first). After this they must use an adult seat belt. • New legislation means that if your child is under 15 months they must sit in a rear-facing car seat as forward-facing seat straps can put too much pressure on a child’s body in a crash. • When buying a new car seat always take your child along with you to check that it fits them correctly and that they are comfortable in it. n Get more child seat safety info from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) at www.childcarseats.org.uk

Samsung, LG, Hyundai, Daewoo, Gangnan Style - just a few things that make South Korea a pretty awesome place (compared to, say, any other Koreas there might be). But it seems that attitudes toward gender, and in particular the parking abilities of certain genders, aren’t that advanced in the Asian country. Apparently there are now ‘Women Only’ parking spaces in car parks with more than 30 spaces, and these have pink lines, signs asking men to stay clear, and are

We can fix it!

Technology expert Matt Todd gives us the lowdown equipment. We have specially accredited service contracts from leading brands in the technology world, and know our way around most of the gizmos and gadgets in your home.

Yes, I was saying that title like the mice in Bagpuss, and for good cause. Although most modern technology is pretty tough and resilient, from time to time things can go wrong. But before you toss that faulty new TV in the garbage and prepare for an evening of angry tweeting to the manufacturer, let us have a look at it. We have a dedicated workshop on-site, where we carry out under-guarantee and out-ofguarantee repairs to televisions, recorders and hifi

It's important never to tackle a repair on your own if you don't have any proper training. Not only are our repair boys equipped with advanced diagnostic and repair equipment, they also know how to do things safely - after all, we're talking about electrical items here. If you have something that is broken and in need of repair, there are two ways of getting it sorted with us. Either bring the item in to us and we'll inspect it, giving you quote for repair work, or let us come to you (if the item is too heavy) and if we need to take it away to fix, we'll even source a loan product for you. Whatever you want to do, pick up the phone and chat to us. n Call 628676

Rolling out Since the invention of carpets our homes have been that little bit more comfortable. Pity people in bygone eras who, at the height of some ghastly, central-heating free winter, would have to climb out of bed and drop their toes onto an icy stone floor. It is one of the reasons why we love Style Flooring, York's carpet wonderland in Heworth. Another reason is that right now they are offering smaller roll-end cuts of carpet at amazingly discounted prices - some as low as £5! Roll-ends are perfect for carpeting awkward little spaces - and even for using as mats in high-traffic areas of your home. n For great quality cuts at even greater prices, call 289266.

Design De-mystified by Becs #1.

Where do I start?

If you know me at all (and I hope you do by now) you’ll know that I love design that is accessible and fun for everyone. I am on a constant mission to dispel the myths and mystique of this funny world and help anyone become their own personal design expert.

You are your own client. You must take the time to think about your needs, your end goal, and what you want out of your project. With that in mind I’m starting a mini-series here, aimed at breaking down the design process for you. These guidelines – though simplified –apply to commercial or residential markets, and large or small scale projects (including yours!). I am a firm believer that there are no right or wrong answers, just opinions. Plenty of logical steps will help you make the right design decisions for you,

44

the question “where do I start?” must be “Me”. You are your own client. You must therefore take the time to think clearly about your needs, your end goal, and what you want out of your project. In this age of instant fixes it can be tempting to launch into selecting paint colours straight away, but without taking time over this stage you can easily lose direction. To help you examine and understand your needs, ask yourself some of these questions: End-Game: Are you refurbishing for yourself, or simply sprucing up to sell on? If you are concerned with selling and making a profit your decisions will need to be more objective.

regardless of current trends or what the neighbours may think. So, here we get to the title of this column “where do I start?” Well, the first step in any design process must

be to establish a clear brief. To do this we need to understand two things. Firstly: the client’s needs. Secondly: the space we are working with. It follows then that the first answer to

Number of Users: How many end users will your space have? Is it a hideaway just for you, or will the whole family be using it regularly? Remember more users means more opinions, preferences and ideas! Number of Uses: Will the space be single-use or multipurpose? (e.g. office doubling as a

Traffic: Is it a high traffic area? Spaces such as Hallways inevitably get more wear and tear and will require harder-wearing finishes. Moisture: Will you have to consider moisture levels? Bathrooms and kitchens require a different category of finishes and fixtures to “dry” spaces. Make sure you do your research. And finally (probably the least fun part):

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Change of Use: Are you altering the purpose of a space? (e.g. bedroom into a bathroom or vice versa) Stripping out will need to be factored in, affecting the overall project programme.

Budget: Do you have a budget in mind? In the commercial world, agreeing fees and a project budget comes before any design decisions are made, so take a leaf out of the professional’s book and keep impulse buys to a minimum!

your home & garden

guest bedroom). What will the main function be?

These questions are by no means exhaustive, but should help you understand your own needs and goals for your project. Coming up: part 2 of establishing your brief: Understanding your space.

Grander Designs

This month we hear from Kate MacNeil from M.A.C. Architects, as she offers us her Beginners’ Guide to House Extensions According to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) people are staying in their homes much longer, and despite the growth in new housing fewer houses are being bought and sold. Therefore to improve, modernise and facilitate our ever-changing lifestyles an increasing amount of people are choosing to extend and develop their existing property rather than moving home. When extending, it makes sense that the design and layout is a cost effective investment – and therefore careful consideration should be given to even the smallest of extensions. Planning consent may or may not be required and now - under Permitted Development Rights - a large number of extensions can be built without any planning permission at all. Big plans It is worth confirming with the Local Authority whether or not a planning application is required, which they will do for a small fee. If you have employed an

architect they will also be able to advise you on the matter, and of course limitations obviously apply if your house is in a Conservation Area or in a National Park! Generally, though, a detached home can be extended up to four metres with a single storey extension, or three metres if you have a semi-detached or terraced house. If the proposed extension will be within two metres of a boundary with your neighbours, then the height of the eaves must be a maximum of three metres. Other important things to consider are that new extensions (with the exception of conservatories) must be built of materials similar in appearance to the main house. Rooflights or dormers can be added to improve and increase your attic space, but these must not face the highway. While permitted developments are beneficial to your home (and it’s value) there’s a lot to consider before starting work. A simple rooflight/window combination system provided a cost effective solution to providing light into the kitchen. The builder re-used existing brickwork which was taken down and reused for the new extension.

Consultations Prior to undertaking any works, no matter how small and unnoticeable they might seem, it is important to consult your architect or the local authority to ensure your works will comply with regulations. There is some great advice available if you look on the City of York Council website's Planning Portal (go to www.york.gov. uk/info and click on the 'Planning and building control' section). Building Regulations will be required regardless of Planning Permission, and it is worth consulting your architect on whether or not Party Wall Act Notices are required to be served on your neighbours. If you are thinking of extending, renovating or building a new home and could do with some advice, it is certainly worth consulting a qualified architect - in the long run it will actually save you money.

Space: The Final Frontier

If you have a small bathroom, don't fret. Thanks to our friends at Watermark Bathroom and Plumbing Supplies we have some tips on making a small bathroom seem that little bit bigger. Small bathroom spaces can be transformed with care. Choosing the right materials, fixtures, and fittings is key, as is thoughtful space planning and a considered emphasis on scale. First, establish a focal point. Keep colours, patterns, and materials simple while not overloading with details. Do introduce one element that is bold or intricate, such as an elaborate mirror. The colour palette in a small space should be simple, using one main colour in a variety of shades. While you shouldn't be afraid to try dark hues, consider painting your bathroom a light, neutral colour. Include clever storage. Use wall-hung varieties rather than ones that sit on the floor to create an airier feeling in small spaces. Replacing a shower curtain with sliding glass doors will also help. Opt for frameless shower doors, clear glass will maximize visual space. n Visit www.watermarkplumbing.co.uk or call 420340.

Over your head According to the rather lovely folks at The Flat Roof Company, quality service + quality products = happy customers; and they should know. After 25 years in business the team have expanded nationwide, but their core values are the same now as they were back in the 1980s. The only thing that has changed is the quality of materials. Some people assume that flat roofs leak, but new technology means that this is a thing of the past. The team at The Flat Roof Company use Tuffdek, a tough, reinforced polyester laminate, which is laid insitu right onto your roof, forming a completely jointless, laminated membrane. The end result is that your roof is completely encapsulated when finished, so there are no joints for any leaks to squeeze through. In fact, the team is so confident of this, they offer a 25year insurance backed guarantee. n Visit www.flatroof.co.uk or call 01937 530788.

Ask Chris...

Got a gardening question?

Chris Brown from Brown’s Nurseries can help

Q.

What is your favourite flowering plant and why?

There is nothing better than a nice rose, so Rosa 'New Dawn' would be my choice. It's a hardy climbing rose that likes good, moist, fertile and well-drained soil, that will grow in the sun or part-shade. It is grown for its excellent repeat flowering pale pink and fragrant roses from summer to autumn. This was the first rose to receive a patent, so they knew they had bred a very good flower. One of its most outstanding assets is the repeat-flowering capability. The pretty, pearlypink flowers are produced in large clusters for really long periods. They smell good too, with a strong, sweet fragrance, as well as having a good disease resistance. It has shiny, mid-green leaves that nearly always look in tip-top condition, and has a habit of gently arching. Its use is not restriced to being trained up pillars, posts, walls and over low roofs, as it can be grown as a hedge or pruned to form a free-standing shrub. If you are training this climber up pillars, try to avoid getting purely vertical growth as this can lead to flowers growing at the top only. It is recommended that the shoots be trained around the support in a spiral formation,

Q.

I have a brown insect with a white sticky substance around it on the stems of my Acer. Can you tell me what it is?

I have had a lot of people come to the nursery with the same problem this year. Because it was a mild winter there are a lot of insects around this summer, and the one you have sounds like the scale insect. There are many varieties of this insect, most of which live on the backs of leaves. Some, however, live on the branches of trees and suck sap from the trunk. This sounds like the horse-chestnut scale, which also lives on magnolias, maples and some other ornamental plants including bay laurel. Infestations are most obvious in summer when the female of the species is mature and tend to gather on trees in sunny spots. Little obvious damage is done, despite the presence of conspicuous colonies. The eggs hatch in June/July and the nymphs feed on leaves until autumn when they move onto the branches and trunks of trees to spend the winter.

encouraging the roses to be produced along the stem. A climbing rose is made up of the long main stems which you train up and along the structure, and the short side shoots coming off the main stems which produced the flowers. As the main stems become crowded you remove the weakest, oldest ones, cutting them to about 30cm above the ground. The side shoots are to be reduced back to about 7cm. The best time to do this in late winter or early spring.

Scale insects are relatively immobile pests but may occasionally be blown around by the wind or transported by birds. All newly arrived plants to your garden or home should be thoroughly examined, and should be treated, if necessary, before being established in the garden, greenhouse or home. Chemical treatments are the most effective when applied, so use a systemic insecticide when you first spot them, and then again two weeks later.

make everything in your garden lovely with dean’s garden centre

The summer of colour The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down.

There is nothing quite as spectacular as the vivid colour display given by an herbaceous perennial border in the summertime. Every conceivable colour in a tangled blend of tall spikes, huge blooms, feathery sprays and dainty nodding heads, can be intermingled at once, leaving the effect of splashes on a painter’s palette. Herbaceous perennials are described by definition, as plants that die down to nothing over the winter months, then send up new shoots and foliage each spring. This is true of most of them but there are exceptions. Euphorbia, Hellebore, Heuchera and Tiarella are some examples that do not disappear completely; also some genus are less hardy and are not likely to survive a severe winter. Massive choice With only a modest amount of work, herbaceous perennials will be a delightful addition to your garden, whether it is in the form of a purely herbaceous border or interspersed throughout your existing planting. The beauty of an herbaceous border is that you can provide everything from a tall backdrop such as Digitalis (Foxglove) at heights up to six feet right down to a path edge of six inches with Geranium ‘Ballerina’, with every gap filled in between.

There are thousands of perennials to choose from, but some have to be mentioned, such as a traditional cottage garden plant, the Lupin. It gives a great variety of colours with taller varieties sporting thick spires of pea-like flowers up to four feet, whilst dwarf varieties such as the ‘Gallery’ series offers denser, compact foliage with flowers of only a couple of feet. Another old favourite is Alcea (Hollyhock), again useful as a tall back drop plant; it is often better treated as a biennial. A beautiful mid-season perennial with unique, huge bowl shaped flower, of up to six or seven inches across is Paeonia (Peony). They can have single, double or semi-double large flowers on tall stems, from white, yellow, pink and red. The variety ‘Bowl of Beauty’ is a stunning pink cup of outer petals filled with a creamy-white fluffy centre. Surprises in store Aquilegia (Columbine) is one of the earliest to flower with lots of colours and heights to choose from. The often two-toned, dainty flowers seed extremely easily making them very good value (and a nice surprise as you never know where they will pop up until next spring).

No herbaceous border is complete without Delphiniums. The towering spikes of sky blue, purple, white or pink flowers will need staking to protect them from snapping in the wind but it is well worth the effort. If you cut back the flower stalk after flowering in June/July you may get another flush in autumn. Also slug pellets are advisable as they are a slug’s favourite dish! A close second on a slug’s menu would be Hosta (Plantain Lily) although they do flower; they are acquired for their astounding range of foliage they supply. Although the herbaceous border dies down, there are seed heads that can be left on until winter that still offer structure and interest such as Alchillea and Sedum. At the end of the season simply cut down the old flower stalks, leaving a small amount of leaf coverage to fall over the crown for protection over the winter months.

GROW YOUR OWN with Debbie Pendle from Brunswick Organic Nursery

Growing your own fruit and veg is rewarding, good for the planet – and your pocket. Here’s how…

Ready, steady.. go! August is a busy month in the gardening calendar – with harvesting and maintaining crops, as well as carving some time out for planning your autumn sowings, it can be tricky to fit everything in! However, with a little preparation, it is possible to get everything done, and spend time with your family and go on holiday. Preparation is key With so many crops ready to be harvested this month, it’s important to keep on top of things and ensure that they are picked at their best, so that you make the most of them. Courgettes Check plants every day and pick the produce when small and tender. Runner, climbing and French beans Pick regularly to encourage the plants to keep producing. Keep plants watered well, pinch out the growing tips when they reach the top of their supports. This will help to produce lateral shoots. Spray with water to help pods to set. Outdoor tomatoes Remove growing tips once the plant has produced five trusses, and feed weekly. Water regularly to avoid blossom end rot, and remove the leaves around the trusses to help the fruit to ripen. Dealing with your harvest Stock up on

sugar, vinegar, glass jars and freezer bags so that you can preserve, pickle and freeze your crops at their freshest. Start sowing We mentioned earlier that it’s time to plan your autumn crop. A little time invested now will mean that you can reap the rewards throughout the season! Here are some of our favourite autumn salads and vegetables: Lettuce - look out for varieties that have been bred for autumn / winter use. Other lovely leaves that are perfect for autumn include lamb’s lettuce, rocket and radicchio. Spring cabbage, and brassicas like radish, turnip and kohlrabi, can be grated to make coleslaw or added to stews, and will be a welcome addition to your kitchen. For extra greens, sow some spinach and chard for a supply throughout the colder months.

Green manure is a ground cover crop that is grown specifically for digging into the soil. Unlike farmyard manure and compost, this soil improver can be produced directly on the plot in the exact quantities required and costs the price of a packet of seeds.

JOBS FOR august 3 Keep weeding and hoeing to

reduce weed competition 3 Sow a green manure to improve soil and cover bare soil 3 Prune plum trees and other stone

fruit after harvest 3 Check regularly for pest and

disease problems

A load of old crock

Do you, like millions of other gardeners, place broken pieces of terracotta pots or 'crocks' into the bottom of patio pot plants? The practice, which is supposed to aid with draining and stop the plants becoming waterlogged, has been passed down for generations and is now commonplace. But, according to an experiment carried out by magazine Which? Gardening, crocks could be doing more harm than good. In the test Which? claims to have discovered that the broken pieces of pottery made no difference to plant drainage, and in some cases caused root damage. Obviously such a claim would make our GreatGardening-Granddads turn in their graves - but what do you think?

Gotaproblem withyourpet? Tracey Pulleyn of Minster Vets answers your pet questions Ticks are becoming an increasing problem in the UK with the warm damp weather we are currently experiencing. Ticks lay in wait in long grass and thick vegetation, waiting for a host to walk past. Once attached the mouthpart will pierce through the skin of your pet to feed on their blood. Ticks can cause anaemia if there is a severe infestation, but the most serious risks that are associated with ticks are the diseases they transmit, such as Lyme disease. Regular tick treatment for pets travelling abroad is very important as they are at a higher risk. It is very important that ticks are removed in the appropriate manner, as causing them stress by smothering them with Vaseline or surgical spirit - or burning them - can cause them to regurgitate possibly infectious fluid back into the pet's bloodstream.

Q. What is the best way to remove a tick? I would recommend that you make an appointment to see your vet to remove a tick as it is very common to accidentally leave the head in the skin. This can leave a route for infection to get into the blood.

Applying products to the tick can cause irritation to the area around the tick as this could become inflamed and irritated. Your vet will be able to recommend an appropriate product that will repel ticks from your pet.

Bee helpful Bees are vital to our survival. We've written here in the past about how bees pollinate some of our most important and popular crops (including chocolate and coffee, so pay attention, eh?), and that is why The Bumblebee Conversation Trust is urging you to help. The charity, which helps to keep our stripy little friends going, is asking keen-eyed Britons to count how many bees they see while out walking this summer. The goal is to see just how well bees are doing right now - and it's a fun thing for you and the kids to do this month while out adventuring. Visit www.bumblebeeconservation.org P.S. We all know there's only one bee in Britain - the first letter. Tee hee!

Perfect Ponds

Conrad from Bradshaws Direct offers tips and advice on how to look after your pond and fish.

The holiday season is finally here and everyone is thinking of setting off on their annual trip to recharge and relax. If that includes you then spare a thought for your pond and its residents before you go. The most important question should be, “who will feed my fish?” Asking a neighbour is what many people will do, and this can work well if next door have a pond and they know how to care for fish. Often well-meaning neighbours will overfeed fish, saying “they still looked hungry”. A sudden, big increase in the amount of food that goes into the pond can lead to illness and even death. MEASURE FOR MEASURE My advice is to find a measure that holds a day’s worth of food, like a yoghurt pot or cut down plastic milk bottle, and put that with the food. Tell your volunteer to only feed one pot of food each day and no more - that way you’ll come back to happy fish AND stay friends with next door! If all that sounds like too much trouble, or if you want your prize Koi to be fed three meals a day, you should consider investing in an automatic feeder. Starting at around £30 these sit next to the pond (or hang over it) and have a timer mechanism that will feed the fish the amount you want at the time you want. Things to consider are the size of the hopper that holds the food, as it must be big enough to last the time you’ll be away. Also consider the number of times a day you want to feed, as some models only feed a dozen times or more. Enjoy your pond! n For advice call Bradshaws on 01904 698801

Keeping

busy Joining a sports club or team is a fantastic way for your child of any age to get lots of exercise and make close friends. Teams will tend to practise a couple of times each week in the evening, and possibly even in the mornings at the weekends. Although there are lots of football, netball, rugby and cricket teams to sign up for, how about choosing a sport that your child might never have tried; something not normally taught in school? Martial arts such as karate and tae-kwon-do are great physical workouts while helping to build your child’s confidence, and what about joining a running team, or a cycling club for youngsters? Whatever sports and games they decide to play after school, always make sure that they enjoy doing it first and foremost.

Whether they’ve been at school, nursery or with a childminder, here are a few ideas to keep your children happy and fulfilled after hours.

Also great physically, performance arts activities include drama clubs and classes, music tuition, and also dancing. Joining one of York's part-time stage schools could be great for children that have shown an interest not just in performing, but also working as part of a team and making friends. Apart from short classes and courses in the dramatic arts, stage schools usually work toward term-end shows and plays, allowing your children to experience a worthwhile and gratifying process. Learning a musical instrument from an early age can give a child a love of music and something

they'll enjoy doing for the rest of their lives. However, some instruments can be very difficult to master and require lots of practice and patience. Dancing is much freer and can be tonnes of fun even for children still in nappies. Be it ballet, tap or street, there'll be something to suit your child's interests.

Come and join

the fun…

Being a part of a club, group or society can be a superb way for your child to explore whatever it is they are interested in. Groups like the Scouts and the Brownies offer lots of different activities and courses, most of which will be outside-centric, but also vital like First Aid training. Other groups to join could include those based around your local community. There are nature groups that organise walks and treks as well litter-picks, board game and modelling

Open up the world for your child with our Montessori nurseries. Outstanding care and education to inspire and guide each individual child.

clubs to keep little fingers busy, and also volunteer groups that do charity work. After school time can also be a great opportunity to learn things not covered by the school's curriculum. Sign Language classes can be both useful and lots of fun, as can learning another language altogether.

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and husband. But more importantly he is a man. As a boy he assumed that by now he would have at least one bionic limb, but at 32 he finds himself writing for Your Local Link. These are his (un)manly words.

Surprise, surprise I am not good at birthdays. I've written before about my terrible attempts at gift giving, especially where my wife is concerned. And so, as her birthday approached I started to get that old familiar sick feeling in my stomach; a combination of panic and outright fear. Last year she asked me to book the day off work for her birthday so we could spend the day together as a family. I did, but decided to keep it as a surprise, telling her instead that I was going into work - right up until 8.30am. It was not a good surprise, as before I finally revealed that I wasn't leaving, she'd become so sad, angry and disappointed at me that I actually think she wanted me to go in the end.

Life's a beach This year I've been better and only kept a secret that wouldn't cause her to scream at me. Together with friends I had planned a surprise day out to the beach, revealing to her only as we were "cutting through" the railway station that we were in fact going to Scarborough. She was pleased, especially because it was a gorgeous sunny day (but mainly because her best friend was in tow, meaning she would have to spend less time talking to me about

64

how Scarborough was once Roman and how the castle was shelled during World War One). It was a lovely day and we all enjoyed it very much. The children loved the beach and splashing in the pleasantly warm sea, my wife was happy soaking up the sun and chatting to her friend, and me... well, I saw a jellyfish, so a good day all round.

Lesson learnt The experience has taught me something about how to surprise someone you love. Basically, making your wife think she is about to spend her birthday alone, cleaning up a new-born's poo, while loathing her husband for being forgetful and selfish - only then at the last minute to reveal that she is fact sending the day with the object of her hatred - is not a good surprise. Not telling her about something good that is happening, then letting it happen, is. I'll learn one day. Now to start planning her Christmas present. I'm thinking of telling her that we're being evicted on Christmas Day and have nowhere to live. And then, in the morning... SURPRISE! Foolproof.

...and another thing An open letter to the man I gawped at on the beach Dear large man in tiny trunks, nity to say what a lovely day it was First of all may I take this opportu my path. The sun was shining in Scarborough when you crossed the ice creams were the kind that down, the water was warm, and gh actually my favourite, even thou come out of a machine which is sion deci your ect resp I h muc how say I’m ashamed of that. May I also t adul an on of trunks I have ever seen to strip down to the tiniest pair the also was h whic with your gut, male; an interesting juxtaposition sight of you splashing around in the that say to ted wan just largest. I lunch and certainly didn’t bring my the shallows did not put me off . Basically mate, thanks for the to mind passages from Moby Dick memories.

Imagine that! Make History Checking out the new 1914 exhibition at the Castle Museum recently has got me thinking about how 2014, and also this decade, will be remembered. I realised that most of the decades of the 20th century had a theme - something that can be used to sum up the time. For example, the 60s were swinging, the 70s were funky, the 80s were electronic, the 90s were grungy and the (I refuse to say “noughties”) previous decade was dominated by the rise of the internet. How will our current decade be remembered? That is why I think we should all start wearing hats made out of balloons, that why in a hundred years all the exhibitions about this point in history will be really random. Imagine that!

Shake, rattle and write Learning basics, like reading and writing, can often be a struggle for children. But, thanks to a new initiative being rolled out by Busy Bees Nursery in Rawcliffe, learning to write will be just as much fun as dancing! The programme, named Shake and Write, aims to provide children with the physical skills and confidence they need to produce flowing handwriting while moving to different pieces of music and rhythms. This way, children remember the various moves and strokes needed to write letters just like they would remember a dance move. n If you think your child would enjoy learning in this way, give Busy Bees a call on 674762.

Why Family Mediation is like the Tour De France... helps you have certainty about where you are going. You might come to mediation already having a sense of what you want and need and that is ok. As every Tour cyclist knows, it is important to be flexible and respond to circumstances as they happen. Sticking rigidly to a strategy that isn’t working doesn’t ensure victory, and neither will being unwilling to be flexible in mediation. Remember, mediation is about your family, not just you.

has to do with Family Mediation? We recognise that there are quite a few similarities between a successful Tour De France and Family Mediation.

The weekend of the 5-6th July 2014 saw Yorkshire go crazy for The Tour De France, is the biggest sporting event in the world. Since 1903 it has tested its participants physical and mental endurance.

Each team has a strategy, a game plan to outwit the other riders and ensure victory. Knowing what you want

You may be wondering what all this

Family mediation can be emotionally draining. Throughout the process, it may be that one person is coping while the other is not. Tempting though it may be to take advantage of the other person, family mediation works because it’s about being fair to yourselves and each other. Agreements arising from situations where one party has felt emotionally

vulnerable and un-resourceful are unlikely to be successful in the long term, and won’t help you feel good. Just like riding a bike up a steep hill, family mediation can be tough at times and you have to keep pedaling to move forward. During the Tour, the riders have their team mates and their support vehicles to keep them moving forward. In family mediation, it is the role of the mediator to ensure that things remain balanced when emotions run high. Mediators ensure that you stay focused on the future, looking at what you can do to make things easier for you and your family. Sometimes compromises have to be made if you want your family to win. call us today to find out how mediation can help you 01904 624185

Support at home Independence is something that we all value and cherish, and it's fair to say that the vast majority of us hope to remain as self-reliant as possible for as long as we can. However, those of us who have recently been discharged from hospital, or are disabled or elderly, can find that we need a little help every now and again. If you're in this situation, there's no need to stay over in a strange environment to receive assistance while you recover. Be Independent, the new community equipment and response service from City of York Council, will allow residents across the city to live with comfort and security at home. The 24 hour warden call and telecare service provides personal help and reassurance in times of emergency, and the team will also offer expert advice and the loan of special equipment to help maintain your independence. Whether you require care yourself or you know someone who could benefit, get in touch.

Turning back the years These gorgeous photos of the lovely Lorraine Stevenson prove that age really is but a number! Lorraine, who works as a home help, was the lucky winner of the Ten Years Younger competition that Face Etc... Medispa ran back in March. The mother of four was treated to £1000 worth of advanced beauty treatments at the award winning Coppergate clinic, as well as a hair style makeover worth £200 from Sarah Cotton at York's BANG salon, and makeup by professional makeup artist Katie Daley. Lorraine’s fabulous new look was then captured in some stunning professional images during a photoshoot in the city with Andrea Denniss of Pink Lily Photography. Lorraine says that she was thrilled to learn that she had won. “I accept the fact that I am 48 years old, but inside I didn’t feel it. Unfortunately the mirror told a different story. Kuki uncovered Visitors to Kuki Spa enjoy the sense of being in an old country mansion when they visit, thanks to the oak panelled walls and stunning original features. In this series, we delve into the story of the almost century-old building. Today, the treatment rooms are relaxing havens where the team work their magic, with clients enjoying everything from massages to cosmetic procedures. However, back when the building was being used as a home by the Sessions family, these rooms were inhabited by family members – you'll notice the oak panelling and hot and cold water basins in these former bedrooms. One The treatment rooms were once the bedrooms of the Sessions family. of the treatment rooms is a little different, though – Room Five has no oak panelling on the walls, as it used to be the maid's quarter.

Mobile

The space that serves as the backwash room today was once the servant's area, and it still features the original bell board above the door. There used to be a bell in each room where the family could ring for service, ensuring that everything ran like clockwork. Though the bells are no longer present, the service is much the same today, with clients treated like royalty just as the family would have been during the Downton Abbey-esque era of the Sessions. Visit www.kukispa.com or call 659007. Look out for the next in the series in our September issue, when we'll look at the Sessions family – and the Kuki family today!

Howfitareyou?

If "well fit!" is what you just answered, you've probably been attending Helen Howard-Mawer's HHow Fit classes. If you are sick of gimmicky diet clubs, counting points and generally feeling guilty for eyeing up that Smartie, you should talk to Helen. Her classes will help you to lose those extra pounds, get as fit and as healthy as a Tour de France cyclist, and - most importantly - have fun and make some new friends. What's more, your first class will be completely free!

High street haute couture Take a detour from the usual busy shopping haunts of Parliament Street onto the quieter stretch of Goodramgate, and you'll find what visitors have dubbed the “friendliest womenswear retailer in York”, and a “secret destination for clothes”. Perhaps it's the helpful, consultative customer service manner; the comfy couch for tired husbands that comes complete with beers and magazines; or even the friendly ghost that is said to reside in the store's Tudor building. Whatever the reason, fashionistas are returning to Kenzi again and again, as much for the friendly, relaxed atmosphere fostered by the owners, local couple Liz and Kevin Moyles, as for the stunning, unusual garments.

72

“Our vision when we set up was to bridge the gap between the high street and established designers,” says Liz. “ We want to offer truly affordable luxury.” If you're looking for fashion forward pieces, Kenzi is the place to go. Since the store opened, Liz has championed several new brands which have later been seen on celebrities. And, there really is something for everyone. “Our customers range from teenagers to octogenarians,” says Liz. “ We sold the same dress to a 27-year-old as we sold to an 83-yearold. Our clothes can be made to look totally different depending on which accessories you use, and their versatility really adds to their value.” n Visit www.kenziuk.com or call 849010.

Helen is a fully qualified fitness instructor with more than 13 years experience in the industry, helping to get thousands of people healthier, happier and feeling better about themselves. In York she offers either a weight loss class packed with nutritional and dietary advice, or a fitness class filled with fat-burning exercises for all ages. Or, if you're really keen for a big change, try both classes in tandem and you'll soon be as strong as a very gorgeous ox and making your ex's jaw drop. n To book yourself in with Helen email helen.hm@btinternet.com or call 790922.

Talk to the Face...etc If you are considering cosmetic surgery then you'll know what an important and serious decision it is. If you feel like your choice is being confused as you are constantly bombarded by advertising of so-called wonder solutions, this could be the event for you. On 11th September Face Etc... Medispa on Coppergate is hosting a cosmetic surgery open evening featuring expert Consultant Cosmetic Surgeon Nicholas Rhodes. Free to everyone, the evening will include an informative presentation about your surgical choices by Nicholas, before attendees will have the chance to speak privately to him in mini-consultations. If you are interested to know more and discuss your personal areas of concern and requirements, the relaxed, informal event will be perfect - and completely without any obligation. All are welcome on the night, regardless of what procedure and treatment you are interested in, however places are limited. To secure your chance to chat with a professional surgeon in Face Etc's gorgeous spa (and a enjoy a complimentary glass of wine), book yourself in by calling 675222.

Hair and Beauty Q&A Option one: Genuine Dermaroller/ Microneedling Micro-fine needles are used to perforate the top layers of the skin, encouraging blood to rise to the surface and start natural regeneration. The skin produces new collagen and elastin layers, which improves the texture of the skin and helps to make the stretch marks disappear. Though we often associate them with pregnant women, stretch marks can affect both genders and can be caused by a variety of reasons, such as weight gain or loss, puberty or HRT. However they are caused, stretch marks can affect confidence and leave both men and women feeling self-conscious about their bodies. However, there is a range of ways to improve the appearance of stretch marks and rejuvenate the skin. And not only can these treatments work wonders for stretch marks, but some can also help to reduce cellulite, as well as improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Option two: TCA Peel This deep, exfoliating peel removes the top layer of skin to reveal the new skin underneath, helping to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. For best results, I recommend a course of between two and four peels. Option three: Dr Murad Cellulite and Stretch Mark Treatment This treatment takes just 45 minutes, and it can help to lift, tone and firm up a number of areas including the bust, thighs, tummy and upper arms.

ASK THE EXPERT Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas! This month, she tackles stretch marks. Option four: Skin Tightening Laser Deep heating uses infra-red to firm up any loose skin, enabling you to achieve a contoured and more youthful appearance. Option five: Pixel Laser A precision laser makes thousands of microscopic perforations, stimulating new collagen to grow which improves the texture and tone of your skin. This treatment can also help to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, age spots and sun damage. If you would like to know more about any of these treatments, please feel free to call the clinic and one of our team will be happy to help!

Who are you and what do you do? Hello, I’m Chris Marsden and I am the Chairperson and breakfast show host of Vale Radio, a brand new local radio station for the community of the Vale of York. I’m responsible for waking up the Vale each morning from 7am with great songs and local information. What is your background? I have been in broadcasting since 1992 and I really love it. What inspired you to want to be a broadcaster? I wanted to entertain people, make them smile, make them feel good about themselves. I always listened to my local radio

What was it about Hospital Radio that you loved so much? I loved meeting the people on the wards, the listener, who is THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON you need to be connecting with. Radio is very one on one. I would sometimes visit the wards and utilise the befriending service where patients didn’t have any visitors, so we used to pop in to chat. What are you currently working on? Vale Radio/The Vale Online is a community based radio station serving the city of York and surrounding towns, villages and rural communities on a real local scale. It will attend as many local places as possible, publicising as many events as possible in the area, and help to support local businesses and commerce through our community partnership scheme. It will give charities, groups and clubs a voice. The website will host a what’s on page, a business directory, useful things like local opening times,

events listings, local news and sport. There will also be local village correspondents writing articles of interest for your area or village. What was it like setting up your company in York? To tell the truth, it was very easy, as the support from the community has been truly amazing, not just from an investment angle, but also from donations of equipment, time, effort and voluntary staff too. The Vale of York is a very creative area, welcoming all walks of life into the fold. From culture festivals to arts, gardening clubs to big swing bands…there is something for everyone! If you weren’t on the radio, what would you be doing? I would be a health care support worker working for Social Services. It was my second career path choice when I went to see the careers advisor! How can people find out more and get involved? Just visit www.thevaleonline.com and all the information is there right in front of you. Alternatively, please feel free to call 01904 765900. We are based within Haxby Memorial Hall in Haxby, so just knock on the door and you’ll be welcomed in!

Simply the BEST Yorkshire dine pudding recipe in the world for

Market Days

to

Harrogate Farmers’ Market Cambridge Street; second Thursday of every month, 9am-3pm.

(according to Rach)... Ingredients 3 4oz (110gms) Plain flour 3 4 free range eggs (really yellow yolks give the Yorkshires their golden colour)

It wouldn’t be Yorkshire Day without a Yorkshire pudding recipe….this is the best we have found by far. By James Martins’ grandmother….doesn’t get more Yorkshire than that. It is the recipe that Rachel, our resident fab cook uses. Gini also swears by it as her attempts pre James Martin were only suitable for the rockery. It is fool proof every time. Double the ingredients to make plenty to freeze or halve them for 2 people.

3 10oz full fat milk (300ml) 3 Salt & pepper 3 Beef dripping or goose fat

method

• Cover and place in the fridge to chill for at least one hour, but preferably overnight. • Preheat the oven to 220C/450F/Gas 7. Divide the dripping or lard between two 12-hole muffin tins or Yorkshire tins and place the tins in the oven for ten minutes until smoking hot. • Carefully pour the batter into the tins, filling the tins one third full.

• Place the flour into a bowl and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

• Place the tins into the oven and cook the Yorkshire puddings for 20 minutes - do not open the oven door during this time. • After 20 minutes, open the door to allow any steam to escape and turn the temperature down to 190C/375F/ Gas 5. Continue to cook until the Yorkshire puddings are goldenbrown and crisp.

If opulence and luxury are in order for you this month, we can think of no better place than the Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa. The five-star hotel on Station Rise excels at making people feel pampered, not just from the stunning surroundings,

but also because of the exquisite food. See for yourself as the Cedar Court Grand welcomes race-goers during the Ebor Festival, 20th-23rd August, for a pre-race brunch with a glass of champagne. You can also look forward to 28th August when the hotel will host their next Ladies Lunch, complete with wine, two course delicious lunch, and a talk from Gemma Carlisle, Personal Stylist at Stell & Dot Accessories. n Visit www.cedarcourtgrand.co.uk

A lordly opening As we reported last issue, York's culinary diversity is now a lot more colourful, thanks to the opening of Cosmo Restaurant on Bridge Street. The Lord Mayor of York was on hand to do the honours, even getting to grips with a traditional Japanese teppanyaki grill, part of the Pan-Asian restaurant's choice of over 150 dishes. All palettes will be catered for at Cosmo, with the menu reading more like a taste-trek around the world with dishes coming

Perfect summer afternoon? If you are searching for that ideal location in which to spend a lazy summer's day, look no further. Now in the hands of Phil Upton, an experienced gourmet chef, and his wife Vicky ,you can be sure that any time spent in the Woodman Inn will be time well spent indeed.
