Lights, camera … silliness! It’s been another month chock-a-block with deadlines, highpressure meetings, and telephone conversations in which we shout “Buy! Sell!” Oh yes, we’re all about the business here. Which is why it was quite a distraction when Howard was sent a remote-controlled aeroplane and started whizzing it around over Haxby. This happens a lot. Howard gets sent toys and gadgets to write about for the Gadget Guide, but recently he’s been particularly interested in the area of

technology that Howard professionally refers to as “got a camera in it.” And so the aforementioned aeroplane came complete with a built-in camera to capture stunning views as it soars through the sky. As well as the plane he has also recently driven a remote-controlled buggy, also with a camera, around the Your Local Link offices, as well as making a couple of stop-motion films using a special webcam he was sent. The ups and downs of life as seen by our very own (very) grumpy, (almost) old woman
House calls
Our old house has just gone up for sale. So naturally, I wanted to go and view it.
‘Why?’ my husband asked. ‘We lived in it for three years.’ Well, yes. But the owners had put in a new loft extension, and I wanted to see what they’d done to the kitchen. Come on, we’ve all done it. Look me in the eye and tell me you’ve never stood in a showhome and sworn blind to the salesperson that you’re a genuine buyer, when all you really wanted to do was get some interior design ideas. Our former neighbours used to do it all the time. It was practically a hobby. In the same way other people spend their weekends playing bowls or fishing, they used to spend theirs fantasy house hunting. By the time they did actually decide they wanted to move, no estate agent would entertain them. I’m not quite as bad as that. Apart from wanting to see our former house for old times’ sake (and the kitchen), I’d never waste a vendor’s time viewing

a house I had no intention of buying. I know how soul destroying it is when you’re desperate to sell and you finally think you’ve got a bite. You spend days decluttering, baking bread and grinding coffee beans, only to find your potential buyers have only come round for a snoop. This actually happened to us the last time we sold. We thought it was odd when our ‘buyers’ quizzed us endlessly about our porch extension – who’d built it, whether we’d needed planning permission, etc – until they let slip that they were planning something similar for their own home, and wanted to see what it looked like from the inside. Anyway, thanks to the wonders of the internet, now we don’t have to bother vendors at all. Who was the genius who created Rightmove? Whoever they are, they should get a knighthood

Nothing beats the thrill of taking a look around a brand new, beautifully designed showhome, of course. Although I’ve been cured of my addiction since I recently took a snoop around the back of a fabulous – and fabulously expensive – city centre townhouse, and ended up being trapped by their state of the art security system. I had to be rescued by the estate agent, so of course I had to pretend to be a serious purchaser. Let me tell you, there’s only so long a woman can enthuse about integral wine coolers and giant shower heads without cracking. I seriously thought we might have to come up with a half a million pound mortgage just to escape. That’s why I’m sticking to Rightmove in future. It’s a lot safer – and cheaper.

It’s something we’ve always taken for granted, until a friend who came to visit pointed out that we had more great restaurants in one street than she had in her whole town. Now we’re making a point of exploring them all, instead of just sticking to our old favourites. We’ll be checking out Your Local Link’s Food & Drink pages for some inspiration!

Unless you’re over fifty, in which case protein is worse for you than cigarettes and you should eat fruit and veg instead, says yet another report. Ah, but eating too much fruit can affect your blood sugar level and make you fat, says another. What you really need is to eat more protein…Frankly, all this conflicting health advice is enough to send us all running to the nearest chippy.

Time Travel
Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing. Tucked away behind the imposing facade of the Mansion House is one of York’s most interesting and historically important buildings. Far more than just a venue for craft fairs, The Guildhall is a centuries old testament to the influence that government, the courts, merchants, and, oddly, the Nazis have had over the everyday lives of York people. Let’s get digging, shall we?
This month: THE GUILDHALL Significant scenes The Guildhall has played host to some important events in York's history. In 1493, while on one of his pleasurable jaunts to the city, Richard III dined and was entertained in the hall, staying as he was just next door at the Augustinian Friary (now the Post Office). In 1586 it was the site of the trial of Catholic martyr Margaret Clitherow, who was subsequently found guilty of practicing Catholicism and "pressed to death" on old Ouse Bridge. And, in 1647 at the height of the English Civil War, it was where £200,000 was stored on the way to pay off the cheeky Scots in return for releasing King Charles I.

Fire night In the early hours of 29th April 1942, York suffered an intensive 90 minute bombing raid courtesy of the Luftwaffe. 92 people were left dead and The Guildhall, along with neighbouring church St Martin le Grand, was a flaming wreck. Unfortunately just before the air raid The Guildhall had been undergoing restoration work and was surrounded by wooden scaffolding. As the incendiary bombs hit, this scaffolding caught alight, contributing the loss of The Guildhall’s wooden roof and all the ancient stained glass. Today the roof and the windows are modern recreations. Trust us, they’re lovely.

• Work started on The Guildhall in 1445 with the first Council meeting being held there in 1459. • Jointly built by the City Corporation (the medieval Council) and the Guild of St Christopher and St George. Wholly taken over by the Corporation in 1549. • Built on the site of ‘Common Hall’, a building first referred to in 1256. Common Hall Lane ran next to this building, now enclosed and covered by the current Guildhall. • The building has been used to host Council meetings, as a Court of Law, as a banqueting hall and also as a theatre. • Bombed and almost completely destroyed in 1942 as part of the German ‘Baedeker Raids’. Restored by 1960 and reopened by the Queen Mother.

Ancient footsteps From the opposite bank of the river you may have noticed a small gateway just beneath The Guildhall. This is the entrance to Common Hall Lane, and back before The Guildhall was built on top of it, it was the main route up from the River Ouse to Stonegate. Now enclosed and accessible only via a small set of steps just behind the Mansion House, Common Hall Lane exists as a tantalising glimpse back to how York used to appear before structures were built right up to the water's edge and it was still possible to walk 'down' to the river bank. Common Hall Lane is thought the mark the location of York's first bridge over the Ouse, the one built by the Roman's in a straight line with the main street, the Via Praetoria
(Stonegate). In slightly more recent times it was where the stones for the ever-changing York Minster were brought into the city from boats. Plagued by the river levels and only accessible in good conditions, Common Hall Lane also features one little quirk - a fridge! As it gets extremely cold and draughty down there, the old caretaker of The Guildhall would use a little alcove to keep his supper cool.

Yorkshire has provided the world with some true literary masterpieces. Bram Stoker wrote Dracula in Whitby, and as well as setting some of the book there, he drew upon local Yorkshire folklore (perhaps, in an early draft, Dracula turned himself into a whippet?). Then of course we had the Bronte sisters, Anne, Charlotte and Emily. Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall are all world-renowned classics, whereas in more modern times the title of Yorkshire Word King has been held by playwright, poet and author Alan Bennett. Let’s not forget York’s own Kate Atkinson (who, since her debut novel Behind the Scenes at the Museum, has gone on to massive success) and our very own Donna Hay. So, we’re good at books then.

Micklegate
If the infamous Micklegate pub run is the only way you’ve ever experienced this great street, prepare to be amazed by one of York’s most fascinating thoroughfares.
From Roman to roaming Although Micklegate itself runs right through the middle of what was once the Roman Colonia, (the civilian city) the street itself didn't exist until much later. Most of York's streets either follow the rough line laid down by one of the grand Roman roads, or instead follows a line of desire and necessity. Micklegate is the latter, being the most direct route down the hill from Micklegate Bar to Ouse Bridge, completely cutting through the straight lines of what used to be there from the Colonia. We blame the Vikings. You couldn't tell those guys what to do. Micklegate is literally a great street. That's because 'mickle' comes from the Old Norse meaning great and 'gate' is an old word for street. And the word great doesn't even do the street justice. For almost two thousand years Micklegate has been at the very heart of York... but in very different ways from its cousins on the other side of the River Ouse.

Not that kind of bar... Surely the crowning glory of Micklegate is the mini-fortress at the end of the street. Micklegate Bar, the medieval gateway into York through the city walls, is not only known as the official Royal entrance to the city (Monarchs still have to ask the permission of the mayor to enter the
city there) but also as 'The Traitor's Gate'. From the bar's creation in the 12th century up until 1754, the decapitated heads of traitors were displayed there on spikes. One notable head, which was left there to be picked at by crows, was Richard, Duke of York - father of King Richard III. Still, pretty nice views we imagine. History repeating These days Micklegate has a reputation of being a place to consume intoxicating substances to excess, and certainly the string
of pubs, clubs and fast food joints reinforce this belief. However, that is not necessarily a new phenomenon on Micklegate. As it was (and still is) on the main route into the city proper from the south, in Georgian times lots of coaching houses sprung up along the street, as did pubs, taverns and alehouses to keep the visitors amused. There are also many references to Micklegate being home to certain 'ladies of the night', including one called Margery 'Cherry Lips' Grey, who offended the residents of St Martin's parish so much they had the Mayor exile her. We can't for the life of us think what she did to annoy them so. Loud music maybe?

Born on Micklegate Micklegate has also given the world some great people. In 1646 St Martin-cum-Gregory church on Micklegate played host to the baptism of Henry Gyles. Henry would grow up to be a leading figure in glass painting, with his works still visible in buildings across the county (least of all York Art Gallery). Henry would be happy to know that the church in which he was Christened (and later buried in 1709) would today be known as the York Centre for Stained
Did you know (and for this you might have to be sitting down to hear) that it you park on Micklegate for an hour it will only cost you 60p? We’re pretty sure that 60p would buy you about ten seconds in most York car parks. Glass. Notable also is Joseph Hansom, inventor of the Victorian 'Safety Cab' (better known as the Hansom Cab) and also John Snow. This John Snow, however, is not known for being the bastard son of Lord Stark in Game of Thrones, but rather as "the greatest ever doctor". Dr Snow was a pioneer of anaesthesia and also stopped an outbreak of cholera in London. Well done Micklegate. You can stay.

Festival Fever Festival season is upon us and I can barely contain my excitement. Cue the wellies, flowers and warm cans of beer. Soon it will become socially acceptable to miss a shower, not brush our hair and wear the same socks for two days in a row. We shake off our daily responsibilities and embrace our inner hippies. No
parents, no bedtime! Festivals are great; however from past experience I would warn that a ‘two man tent’ is actually a ‘one man and maybe his bag if you’re lucky’ tent. Showers are mainly communal, toilets can occasionally be holes in the ground and if you like going to bed before 3 am I wish you all the best.
Waterproof tents are also essential and not just for if it rains… (I’ll spare you the details). I’ve had a quick look over the festivals coming up over the summer season and have put together a little guide explaining the pros and cons of various festivals you might consider attending this year.
Galtres Festival 22nd-24th August Celebrating their ten year anniversary this year, Galtres festival is known for keeping everyone in the family happy. Children are more than welcome and are provided with plenty to do. Pride is taken in locally produced food and drink (over 100 beers and ciders to be precise! Cue chant: YORKSHIRE YORKSHIRE YORKSHIRE). There are eight music stages showcasing a wide variety of music all set in the beautiful Duncombe Park. There’s little to complain about with Galtres although they may not showcase a line up quite as impressive as Leeds or Glastonbury.
Global Gathering 25th & 26th July Set in Stratford upon Avon it’s a fair way to travel but certainly worth the journey! Global is an over 18’s only event, showcasing the best artists from the dance/ electronic music scene. Introducing a brand new super arena and bringing you acts such as Chase and Status, The Prodigy and David Guetta, this year’s festival looks set to be a scorcher. I’d say if you like your beauty sleep and a spacious serene campsite – this isn’t the place to catch some Z’s.
Bennicassim 17th – 20th July If one of the main factors that put you off UK festivals is the chance of rain, then Bennicassim is for you. Set on the east coast of Spain between Valencia and Barcelona, there’s plenty of sea, sand and sunshine. The festival showcases a variety of well-known acts from dance to indie and rock n roll. There’s a water park nearby and no shortage of bars, cafés and restaurants to explore during the day. This is more than just a Festival, it’s a holiday too. But don’t forget that holidays are a little different when you don’t have an air conditioned hotel room and private shower! Of course there’s always good old Leeds fest; I just figured you might fancy a change. Anyway, they’re all spaced out so I’d recommend attending all three. That cash he’s flashing could come from a payday loan for all you know. Honestly, AL, you’re better than this. Take on extra shifts if you need the cash that much. It might not be the easy way out, but at least you’ll be able to look yourself in the eye.

Yes, it’s a bit passive aggressive, but it’ll be a laugh.

That’s the ticket
Hush hush... Whisper it quietly, but York City could, unbelievably, get into the play-offs. It’s not just unbelievable considering that a year ago they nearly became the first team in history to escape the non-league, only to fall back at the first attempt (securing safety by winning 1-0 at Dagenham on the final day), but even this season the team were languishing near the relegation zone on the 28th December. What a turnaround it has been for Nigel Worthington’s men. Only four players remain from the Wembley double winning side of 2012 but they have been replaced by a mixture of football league experience (Russell Penn, Keith Lowe and John McCombe) and exciting talent such as the brilliant Nick Pope in goal. All home games, excluding any potential play-off semi-final, are completed with all eyes on the trip to Glanford Park, Scunthorpe United, on 3rd May left to play. Scunny may have ripped their way through the League Two table but may remember Ryan Brobbel’s double as part of a 4-1 drubbing we handed out before Christmas which should serve the team well.

I recently took in some Premier League action during a trip to London (it might take Nigel bit of time to get the Minster men there...) and watched Tottenham against Sunderland. I know people always claim that things at the elite level are so much better in every aspect, but I don’t think this applied to ticketing. A friend and I were told we couldn’t get a ticket unless we were on the Spurs database, or collecting a ticket. So, we moaned for a minute or two about how you should be able to just pay on the turnstile like at good old Bootham Crescent, before buying two tickets via a smartphone whilst stood next to the very guys who said for security reasons we couldn’t buy a ticket. The rule was as pointless as Dappy’s new tattoo.

getting into the swing of things. As mentioned in previous columns, I only see things in F1 these days from the outside (and with the mute button on). Can someone explain to me how a year ago no one could beat Sebastian Vettell yet now Lewis Hamilton is hot favourite to win the title? BBC online said it’s to do with the car. Well, I kind of guessed that much. Why don’t they all drive the same thing? Then surely you would know who the best driver is. If it was all three wheelers, even better. I think that is the only way I would become a fan; either that, or if Dick Dastardly and Muttley joined Mercedes.

stellar signings of Aaron Finch and Kane Williamson, have a number of home games in May, facing Warwickshire (starting 11th May) and arch rivals Lancashire (starting 25th May) in the County Championship. They will also be in one-day action when they take on Northamptonshire (16th May) and Derbyshire (30th May) in the Natwest T20 Blast. All games are at Headingley, Leeds, with the Scarborough fixtures taking place later in the year.
Going the distance Although York City’s promotion remains high on the sporting agenda this month, which would tie in with York City’s regular Wembley appearances, all eyes will be on another Wembley encounter with Saint George Groves taking on the Cobra Carl Froch in the most highly anticipated rematch since Rocky took on Apollo Creed. It is in line to become the biggest boxing match ever staged in the UK, and if it’s half as good as the first fight, we are in for a treat. I just hope this time the ref doesn’t step in if it gets too exciting, or the loser claims a poorly toe in the aftermath.
Blast form the past Many teams up and down the country have masters sides where old pros put on their boots again for tournaments, and York City have been getting in on the act with their own past players side turning out for charity games, organised by Graham Bradbury. Their most recent clash was against a York FA Old Boys XI at Huntington Rovers, North Lane on 6th April. The Minstermen masters played as far back as the 1970s, and their counterparts featured significant past players from York and District football. A packed crowd raised nearly £3500 for the Martin House Children’s Hospice Good Night’s Sleep Appeal and witnessed York City roll back the years in a 7-2 victory. Goal scorers included Iain Dunn, Marc Thompson, Lee Nogan and Mark Ford, and other players included Tony Canham, Steve Bushell, Steve Tutill and Andy McMillan from the early 1990s Wembley era. Also playing were Chris Topping and Dave Fogg, the latter being one of the scorers for York FA Old Boys, who are both aged 63. Congratulations to all involved!

The ability to hear from someone who has already taken you on and been satisfied with your work is a massive confidence boost to new customers while searching for trades people. Speaking of words... Selfie selfishness According to figures released by Confused.com, 7% of drivers have admitted to taking a photograph of themselves with their smartphone while driving. The survey, which quizzed 2000 drivers about their motoring habits, revealed that younger drivers aged 18-21 were the worst offenders, with 9% saying they regularly snap themselves and upload the images to sites like Facebook and Snapchat. Both the Institute of Advanced Motoring and car speed charity Brake have condemned the practice, stating that drivers who are busy taking selfies clearly aren’t paying attention to the road. We’re a bit puzzled by this, as who would want to see someone drive a boring car? Helicopter, now that we’d be interested in.
If you thought the way American police were portrayed in films and TV was a bit exaggerated and overly dramatic, you may be wrong. That is because the Los Angeles Police Department (those who swear "to protect and to serve") have recently kitted themselves out with a new car. Unlike a normal police vehicle though, this particular new car is a
Lamborghini Gallardo which costs around £130,000 and has a top speed pushing 200mph. So if you are planning to commit any crimes in LA soon (as you do) there's a good chance that no matter how fast you run, you will get caught. Oh, and the car has its own Twitter account. No, we're not kidding.

We look at a few common car complaints and how best to tackle them. Leaks: Is there a puddle forming under your parked car, or even white smoke coming from the exhaust? Chances are you have a leak somewhere. Although all leaks should be checked out by a trained mechanic as soon as you notice them, adding a product called K-Seal to your cooling system could help, as well keeping a roll of Kalimex QuikTape handy to seal holes in pipes. Handling: If your car doesn't seem to be handling as smoothly as it once did, then there could be a problem with the tyres or tracking. Tracking needs the immediate attention of your mechanic to fix, but the tyres can be sorted by you. Pull over and inspect them; if you notice any bulges or bumps, or indeed actual damage to the tread, swap it for the spare in the boot straight away and get all tyres pressure checked. Battery: Not many people know, but car batteries only get recharged on long journeys. If you take lots of short trips then you could be depleting the battery which in turn might lead to problems. If you're having trouble starting the car, working the electrics or are suffering from laboured engine running, it might be your battery. Check the connectors are secure and free from rust, and if the problems continue it may be time for a new one.

I am not a minimalist. In fact, I would say I am the exact opposite: I hoard. Big Time. It wasn’t until a recent break that I realised how detrimental this can be. For a week we lived simply with the bare minimum of possessions and it was wonderful. Then I walked back into our home and I could feel my stress levels rising almost instantly. Everywhere I looked there were piles of papers and trinkets with “to do” written all over them. When and how did we end up with so much “stuff”? And do we really need it all? The answer – of course - is no. So this Spring season, I’m going to be aiming for less, not more. If like me you’ve had it with the clutter, follow these steps towards a more serene home.

Look at the planes of your space… … floors: Remove any rugs, piles of books or unnecessary details that clutter your floor space. … walls: have you got millions of frames, mirrors or ornaments on display? Pare it down and choose just a few select pieces. White space is key: use it to emphasise certain elements over others.
Furniture: The fewer pieces the better. What can be removed without sacrificing practicality? With the remaining pieces consider how can their form can be simplified or dressed down. Window Dressing: Flouncy curtains and pelmets are out, simple blinds or drapes that sit inside your architectural openings are in. Storage: If you must hold onto your “stuff” then store as much out of sight as possible. Open shelves are a no-no when it comes to the minimal look. Finishes: Natural materials are king in a minimalist interior. The 20th Century movement was influenced by Japanese design amongst other things, so think coir matting, timber flooring, muted colours, and diffused lighting. Pattern & colour: If you must include pattern somewhere, stick to geometric styles. Floral, chintz, or Paisley is out. For colours, stick to neutral tones: natural colours, white, grey, and any other “monochrome” can all be used in abundance.

Channel 4’s Kevin McCloud obviously has a lot to answer for, as more and more of us are choosing to remodel, extend or even build our own houses from scratch. With so many ‘self-builds’ popping up across the city there is a growing wealth of interesting and inspiration property designs to whet the appetites of those hoping to create their own dream homes. But to keep your project cost effective, be it a small kitchen extension or a giant five bedroomed house, everything has to be meticulously planned and considered. That is where the services of a qualified architect are essential.

“An architect can add far more value to your project than the cost of their fees,” explains Kate. “Architects provide a service that extends well beyond producing a set of drawings. kidspatch Keep your garden well guarded with your very own scarecrow! You will need: 3 Three sturdy sticks of bamboo, measured 2 metres (for the body), 1 metre (for the arms) and 30cm (to hang the legs from) 3 Some old clothes – including an old pair of tights 3 Poster paints 3 String 3 Leaves, or straw Instructions: Make the frame for your scarecrow by tying the 2m and 1m sticks together in a cross shape, with the 1m stick sitting about 15cm from the top of the 2m stick. Then tie the 30cm stick about halfway down the 2m stick. Make sure you tie it tightly, otherwise your scarecrow may end up looking a bit wonky. Make the head by cutting one of the legs from your pair of tights, stuffing it with leaves or straw, then tying the end with string. Paint on a face, then tie it onto the top of your frame. Now it's time to dress your scarecrow. Put an old shirt or jumper on the top crossbar, and trousers on the bottom crossbar. Tie the ends of the sleeves and legs of the trousers with string, then stuff them with leaves or straw. Find a suitable place in your garden for your scarecrow to live, and push the bottom of the 2m stick into the ground.

Animals The birds are back in town! Look out for swallows, martins and swifts as they arrive back in our trees and hedges this month. Also, head to your local woodland and see if you can spot a flycatcher. These birds wait in trees for insects to arrive, then quickly fly upwards to catch their dinner – hence the name, of course! You should also see every gardener's best friend, the humble bumblebee, make an appearance in May. Make sure you have some flowers on show to attract them to your yard! Plants You might spot the odd cornflower – usually blue, but there are other colours in bloom occasionally. The delightfully scented freesias also come into their own this month, as well as delicate forget-me-knots. Slipper orchids offer some exotic drama, and sunflowers provide wonderful height! Also, see if you can spot a blanket of sweet peas – they don't live for very long, but they look particularly beautiful en masse and are well worth seeking out. Hawthorn hedges should start to produce some lovely white blossom this month, too.

Could you please give me some advice about making hanging baskets, as I always struggle to put the plants in the right places?
silver helichrysum, nepeta, million bells and trailing verbena. Now place a narrow band of moss around the basket, about two inches in height, then fill with soil.
My father taught me back in the late 1960s with geraniums, lobelia, marigolds and impatiens, so we didn’t have the choice of plants we have now. Ben Kilvington made our wire baskets at the wireworks in Stonegate and one of our first customers was the Mount Royal Hotel on Blossom Street.
Now starting the next layer, use shorter trailing plants such as bidens, sanvitalia and scaevola, in a square, but not above the trailing plants on the lower level. Then in between them place four bedding begonias to complete that layer. Place moss around the basket, as on the lower layer, and then fill with compost.
Times have moved on since then and now we have a massive choice of colour, long trailing plants and short trailing plants. So when a customer asks us to make a basket in shades of different colours, or all one colour, it is nice to have such a vast collection of plants. We still use sphagnum moss as it holds moisture really well.
The next layer is the very top. At the side use short trailing plants like Felicia, brachyscome, and gold helichrysum. The latter is a very pretty pink flower with dark foliage. Then place begonias in between as in the lower layer. Top the basket up with compost so it is slightly domed, and start with an upright fuchsia in the centre, then place three geraniums in a triangle around it.
We start by placing a piece of moss in the bottom of the basket about the size of a small saucer. Then we place four mixed trailing lobelia in a square at the bottom of the basket, before putting four long trailing plants between them, such as

A new house has been built next to my property and I would like to place a screen between us for privacy. What do you recommend? In addition to conifers, various medium-sized to large broad-leaved trees make a good line of defence against persistent winds, and can screen unattractive views or unsightly objects. Many also have ornamental features. Acer Platanoides, one of the most adaptable and reliable of all trees, the Norway maple develops a round crown. Yellow flower clusters emerge in mid-Spring. The leaves turn a rich yellow, red or orange in autumn. Alternatively there is Fagus Sylvatica, or Common Beech. One of the world’s most beautiful trees, this matures to form a domeshaped crown with smooth grey bark in winter and pale green leaves Here are a few more in spring. Turning that I can recommend shiny in summer for cover: and golden yellow in Quercus Ilex, Eucalyptus autumn, this is a tree Gunnii, Populus ‘Italica’ and for all season. Tilia Cordata.

The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down.
May is the time of year when everything is growing strong, not least the early perennials. Among some of the best are the most elegant of them all: bearded irises, which parade their standards (petals facing upwards) and falls (petals facing downwards) in many different colours, just like they were in a summer fashion show. All bearing a well trimmed beard, they certainly mark the way for the summer.
Varieties There is a huge range of bearded irises to discover, whether the older traditional varieties such as ‘White City’ (1940) take your fancy, or the ultra modern looking space aged types like ‘Mesmerizer’ sound intriguing to you, there is an iris for almost everyone out there. Amongst the earliest bearded iris to flower are the dwarf standard bearded varieties, such as ‘Cherry Gardens’. Poking their heads four-five inches above the soil level as though taking shelter from the late spring winds, these are perfect little gems for the front of a border. Then there are the tall bearded varieties, show-boating their large magnificent heads on stems of around three feet in late May/early June.
Growing tips Growing bearded irises is relatively straightforward. Given a well-drained, sunny border, they will flower year upon year. If you’re not so lucky to have well-drained soil, don’t worry: all is not lost. It just means that you will need to do a bit of work to improve it. This is an easy process, with just a bit of digging and the addition of as much grit sand and horticultural grit as possible, and most irises will grow fine.
Feeding and splitting To improve the amount of flower stems, feed irises twice a year: once in early spring with a feed that is high in potash, and once after flowering, this time with a feed that is low in nitrogen, as high nitrogen feeds may cause the iris to rot. Splitting iris will also help to reinvigorate old clumps, which should be done after flowering; July is usually a good month to do this. Lift the clump and, with a sharp knife, cut out the old rhizomes, which are the ones with little or no growth in the centre and keep the new growth around the edge of the clump. Then replant the new plants so that the top of the rhizome is above the surface of the soil, and trim back the leaves to about six inches in a triangle shape. This should be done every three to four years. By following these growing tips, your irises will be well on their way to first prize in your garden’s summer fashion show.

If you have a pond filter now is the time to change your ultra violet bulb if you haven’t done so this year. They are effective for about six months and it is the bulb that makes the algae clump together so it can be filtered out. Don’t have a filter? You can add a treatment to the pond that will get rid of your green water that doesn’t harm your fish. There are lots of different ones available and you might need to add more every few weeks throughout the summer. Be sure to check the instructions on the one you choose.

A great long term solution to green water is to add marginal plants to the pond as they use up the nutrients that feed the algae. Fast growing varieties that have roots in the pond but leaves that stick out are the best, such as Flag Iris (Iris pseudacorus). As well as staying clearer your pond will look prettier too. Don’t expect results this year though as the plants will take a while to get going.

Blanket weed is the other thing pond keepers hate at this time of year. This is the long, stringy green algae that look like strands of hair. You can remove the worst of this by twirling it round a garden cane, a bit like candy floss, and then sliding it off and onto the compost heap. To stop it coming back you can use an anti-blanket weed treatment. The modern ones are a simple sachet that you drop in the pond each week over the summer to keep it at bay. Growing your own fruit and veg is rewarding, good for the planet – and your pocket. Here’s how…
squash for summer
Courgettes and marrows are closely related and are members of the Cucurbit family along with pumpkin, squash and cucumbers. Marrows are essentially an elongated summer squash and the courgette a smaller variety that has been bred for picking small before the skin has hardened and the seeds inside the fruit have formed. This fast growing vegetable is one of the easiest crops to grow which makes them ideal for novice gardeners and a good choice to grow with children. Choose an open, sunny site, with some protection from wind. Prepare the planting holes by digging out a 60cm (2ft) square that is 36cm (14in) deep, with 1m (3ft) between each hole. Fork through the base of each hole to improve the drainage, and backfill the soil mixed with plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. Try to do this a few weeks before planting to give the soil chance to settle. Sow indoors Sow seeds from early May into 8cm (3in) pots that are 13mm (½ in) deep using organic vegetable compost. Sow the seed on its edge rather than flat to avoid water lodging on it, causing it to rot. Courgettes and marrows are tender vegetables and dislike cold nights. They need propagation heat of 13-15°C (55-60°F) for germination, after which they can be grown on in a warm glasshouse where the night-time

temperature falls no lower than 4.5°C (40°F). Plant outside in prepared ground in early June when the threat of frost has past. Sow outdoors Seeds can be sown directly into previously prepared ground. Sow three seeds per station, 2.5cm (1in) deep, in late May or early June and cover with cloches or plastic to provide extra warmth. Thin the seedlings to let the strongest one grow on and leave the protection on until the plant is growing on well. If you don’t have the time or space for either method, you can buy plants ready for planting out from Brunswick in late May. Pick of the crop! My favourite courgette varieties to grow are Nero Di Milano, a dark green variety; and Gold Rush, a yellow skinned fruit with great flavour. Both of these are very reliable and productive. To encourage the plants to keep producing cut the fruits when they are young, about 15cm in length. If you are unable to harvest your courgettes regularly then select a yellow variety as they are not as vigorous as green types and grow much slower so you have more chance of picking them at their best! For marrows, select a variety such as Tiger Cross which is great for winter storage.

• Plant a wide variety of flowers that will bloom throughout spring, summer and autumn to help butterflies throughout their growth cycle, and to attract a range of species.

• Avoid insecticides and pesticides at all costs, as these can kill butterflies.

• Plant the following to attract butterflies: Buddleia, Verbena Bonariensis, Lavender, Perennial Wallflower, and Marjoram.
Gardens can act as an important natural habitat by offering abundant supplies of nectar. Butterflies will visit any garden, however small, if they can feed from suitable nectar plants and a well thought out garden can attract up to 18 species of butterfly.
• Prolong flowering by deadheading, mulching with organic compost, and watering well to keep the plants healthy. Plants that are wellwatered will produce far more nectar for hungry butterflies.
As well as being a joy to watch and a welcome indication of summer, butterflies are a great boon to any garden thanks to their help with pollination.

A century and a half of care In 2014 the York and District RSPCA Animal Home is celebrating its 150th year of caring for and re-homing animals. To mark this occasion the staff of the home are aiming to raise £150,000 to update the facilities for all the animals in our care.
Our anniversary fundraising efforts will kick off with a free-entry Grand Coffee Morning on 10th May at The Guildhall, beginning at 9.30am and opened by York MP Hugh Bailey. There will be lots of stalls and items of interest including our ever popular 'Everyone's a Winner', as well as a large selection of books, crafts, plants and refreshments. Staff will also be handing out 'chip and snip' vouchers, which allow you to get your pet both nutered and fitted with an identity chip.

My dog has recently had a bout of cystitis - is there anything I can do to help stop this reoccurring?
My puppy has had fleas. I used the spray treatment, can I use anything else?
Plenty of fluids is the most common recommendation for patients suffering from cystitis. Your vets may prescribe antibiotics. Unfortunately cystitis can be an ongoing problem, and you would need to discuss the best methods of preventing recurrence with your vet.
My advice would be that you must follow the directions on the treatment as to when the next dose is due. Overuse of flea products could be very dangerous in some cases, also I would speak to your vet to ensure you are getting the right product for the puppy’s age and weight. If you are still seeing fleas in the house, it may be advisable to ask your vet if they can offer a household spray. I would also recommend you worm your puppy, as the flea and worm lifecycle link. Ask to make a appointment with the nurse to discuss your puppy’s preventative healthcare.
How soon can I get my cat spayed after she has had kittens? Once your cat has finished feeding her kittens, the milk that she has been producing will slowly start to reduce. This process can take from one to two months. She can be spayed once all her milk has gone. Don’t let her out once the kittens have stopped feeding, as she could get pregnant again. If you are unsure phone your vet and ask for an appointment to have her checked.

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and husband. But more importantly, he is a man. As a boy he assumed he would’ve developed some kind of super power by the age of 31, but at 32 he finds himself writing for Your Local Link. These are his (un)manly words.
Empire of the Son This month my son turned one. Although my daughter, first born and heir to my vast wealth (there are some mint Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle action figures from 1992 in my parent's attic), often takes the limelight, recently my wife and I have been amazed by how our little boy's personality has started to shine through. When my daughter reached her first birthday she was a gentle angel who seemed to have been loaned to humanity by the Elves to teach us all how to be "lubberly" and to remind us that geese hate the word boo. My son however, while still retaining titles such as 'The Human Pudding’, and 'Joyball', is a different story altogether. For he was sent by the Elves to keep us all in line and remind us of our mortality. Mini-Hulk He's brutal; there, I said it. Our little boy is not thuggish, and certainly never angry, but he somehow combines the looks and general pleasantness of a Teletubby with the brute force and unpredictability of The Incredible Hulk. He may only be less than two feet tall, but, quite like a neutron star, he is massively dense and powerful. This was more than evident recently when, after

a Godzilla-like thrust of his little foot, he put my wife in hospital with suspected internal injuries. Not a joke. Fortunately after a few nervous hours all was revealed to be well, leaving a Shakespearean disaster averted and my son happily banging a toy drum with a toothbrush. Stick to it Whereas my daughter at age one would silently toddle into a room and shyly smile at the people there, my son makes dramatic, chaotic entrances, usually armed with some sort of stick (where does he find them?), sees me, declares "Dar!" and charges straight for my crotch. Here the mystery stick changes from a curious object into a weapon designed to ensure I have no other children. We could hire him out the army; they'd march him toward enemy lines, and as the enemy were cooing at how damn cute he is, he'd strike, first with the stick then with intestine-endangering kicks. This new-found boisterousness has unfortunately coincided with our daughter's 'three-nage' phrase, resulting in dinnertimes where I am (lovingly)
assaulted by toothbrushes from one side, and loudly told from the other that "I not like dis dinner! I only like hummus!" You should come around sometime, especially if you're Greek.

...and another thing I'm quite busy right now actually As I work most of the month from home you might think that I miss out on the usual day-to-day office events. You are wrong. Working from my home office is very much like working in a proper office, but instead of having meetings with my editor to discuss the magazine's content, I have some high-pressure facetime with my daughter. Our 'meetings' take place throughout the day, in which she comes into my office and checks up on me. "You doing work, daddy?" she asks. "I am, sweetie, " I answer. She then stares at my screen for a while, frowns and says, "Get on wiv it, den." I'm not sure I can take this kind of pressure for much longer. Although I am considering asking her for a pay rise.
Two wheels are better than none I'm not usually one for getting caught up in popular enthusiasm for an event. I still don't really know who or what Mo Farrow is and if you asked me what important contest was taking place this summer, I'd say the continuing legal battle over Richard III's burial place. So I was a little surprised to be genuinely inspired by the coming Tour de France to consider buying a bike. I can't drive, so the idea of getting about in a way that requires neither a good knowledge of pavement etiquette nor a bus pass is appealing. Also, the fact that modern bicycles seem to be made out of space shuttle parts appeals to my love of gadgetry. So if you see me pedalling about York this summer, do say hello. Clean Break?
Not if you have children…. to dictate how the other should parent their child. We each have a right to parent our child or children in the way we deem appropriate, however it is difficult to manage how the other party parents when they are no longer under the same roof. One of the main roles as a mediator is to identify the issues which have resulted in the breakdown in communication and reorganise families to assist both parents, taking into account the needs of their children.
Many years ago when someone said ‘I do’ it was for life. If a couple’s relationship took a turn for the worse, couples would work on their relationship and not just run to their nearest solicitor. This of course left many people trapped in love-less and unhappy marriages and thankfully times have now changed. Separating is not as simple as visiting your local solicitor, issuing divorce proceedings and severing all ties. Whether you are married or not, having children with another person is for life and it is very difficult to cut all ties with that person. Whilst a child is under the age of 18, decisions will need to be made in regards to the child’s upbringing. A parent gaining sole legal ‘custody’ of a child is something of the past. With support from the courts regarding fathers’ rights this means that it is not so easy to achieve a ‘clean break’ from your former partner As both a solicitor and a mediator, I regularly remind clients that when children are involved, whether they like it or not, their paths will continue to cross with their former spouse. Given that once upon a time the parties loved each other and could talk civilly to one another, there is no reason why
this cannot still be the case if managed correctly. At mediation, meetings will be conducted in a controlled environment with the mediator allowing each party to talk and more importantly listen to one another. The mediator will intervene where appropriate and explore different options for both parents to communicate and work together. There are many issues discussed in mediation particularly how the other party chooses to parent their children. In reality neither party has the right
Over the years, the way people parent their children has changed significantly and there has been a rise in separated families. It is important that both parents recognise how important their role is in a child’s life and work together, this does not necessarily mean as ‘man and wife’ or in a relationship together. Both parents have chosen to have a child with one another and their role as a parent is not going to disappear because their relationship has broken down.

Everything’s coming up roses at the Pauline Quirk Academy Opening as recently as last October, the Pauline Quirk Academy in York is already proving itself to be a fantastic school of performing arts. The students, who gather at Huntington School to learn all there is about treading the boards professionally, have enjoyed success after success. Their recent Comedy & Drama showcase went down a storm, along with sketches and comedy pieces that the students wrote themselves. Defying gravity They also recently had a West-End musical masterclass with Wicked cast member Ella Camponi. But it wasn’t just the singers that get to learn from the greats, as next term the pupils will enjoy a circus skills masterclass and even a magic masterclass. There’s absolutely nothing up their sleeves. Despite only having been with the school for a few months, some of the students are really starting to shine. Green group’s Toby has started modelling children’s clothes for Tesco, and Blue group’s Ellla Rose won a part in highprofile BBC drama The Thirteenth Tale. Congratulations to these two and best of luck to other students vying for top roles. For some however, memory loss and forgetfulness can be a sign of something else, something that effects the lives of nearly a million people in the UK. The symptoms of Dementia usually reveal themselves over several years, making them hard to spot and get an accurate diagnosis. If you have been suffering from forgetfulness and changes in mood, and are having difficulty making decisions, it may be time to chat to your GP. Dementia Awareness Week takes place in May this year, making it the perfect reminder to get checked out. However, it is important to remember that not all memory problems are down to dementia; they could also be caused by medication you might be taking, tiredness, stress, and illnesses. Talking to your doctor will help rule out the many causes of dementia-like problems and is the best way to help you on your way to dealing with and managing your memory. As
well as medical help and advice you will be able to get emotional support and encouragement from a variety of services and groups. Whatever the outcome, it's important to know that you're never alone in a fight against dementia.

Having previously used the mousse version of this product, I was keen to try the lotion. The tan smells clean and fresh, none of the usual biscuit scent you associate with some fake tans. The instructions say a 5p sized amount of lotion was enough to cover a small area , but I’d be a bit more generous with it! I applied using a selftanning mitt to ensure an even streak free tan. The consistency was more of a gel than a cream - which was easy to blend. Every girl has suffered the nightmare of standing still waiting for fake tan to dry, luckily this dried super quick. Once I’d showered off the colour guide in the morning, I was left with a lovely, even, golden streak free glow. Perfect. I’d highly recommend it!

This one’s a little more expensive but definitely worth the splash out. It gives off a gorgeous citrusy scent and there’s no need to use a mit you can just rub it in how you would with any other body oils. The application was super speedy and in under five minutes I’d done my whole body. When I woke up in the morning I had an even golden glow that was nothing like some of the more synthetic colours you get from other fake tans. This tan looked like I’d earned it on a two week holiday… 10/10 just make sure you wipe your hands with a baby wipe after application!

Okay so I don’t have a great history with self-tanning products, most attempts usually result in patchy, Tango coloured streaks and some hideous carpet disaster that my landlord will never forgive me for! But even I can get a professional looking summer glow with this stuff! It’s impossible to mess up, the pump action spout means no mess and because it’s a gradual tinted moisturiser you can just slap it on without having to worry about being super careful where you put it, no need to worry about blotchy knees and elbows as it soaks in evenly. Plus there isn’t the inconvenience of having to stand around like a scarecrow waiting for it to dry before you can get dressed, it soaks in in seconds and has a lovely chocolaty holiday smell too. Just remember to wash your hands after applying or you’ll ruin the fab summer tan with bright orange palms.

Hair and Beauty Q&A Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas! This month, she tackles tattoo removal. Tattoos are a wonderful way to express yourself and adorn your body, but every once in a while we’ll make a silly decision, and sometimes that’s an ill-judged tattoo. Maybe your tattoo is hard to cover up for work, or perhaps you’ve fallen out of love with the design. Not to worry – laser removal can help! How many laser tattoo removal treatments will I need? Most amateur tattoos usually require three to five treatment sessions at monthly intervals, and professional tattoos typically require between eight and 12 sessions. Do all tattoos respond to laser treatment? In the majority of cases we are able to remove most tattoos, but no one laser can remove all types of tattoo ink, which is why here at Skin Doctor we use two laser frequencies to ensure optimal results.
How long does laser tattoo treatment take? Most laser tattoo treatment sessions last between ten and 15 minutes depending on the size of the tattoo. How does it work? Tattoo ink particles are too large for the body’s immune system to remove naturally. By passing a very short pulse of high power laser light through the skin, the tattoo ink is broken into smaller particles, which the body is able to remove. Does it hurt? The lasers can cause slight discomfort during treatment, with clients describing the sensation as being similar to being ‘snapped’ with an elastic band. Some areas are more sensitive than others, such as the ankles and shoulder blades. The pain tends to decrease as treatment progresses and the tattoo ink fades. Most patients tolerate the discomfort
of treatment very well, but a local anaesthetic is available if required. Are there any after-effects to laser tattoo removal? Redness and swelling may occur that’s similar to sunburn, and this will settle within a few days. Some patients may blister, which is quite normal and does not indicate potential scarring. Blistering does not require treatment and will usually clear within days. The treated area should not be exposed to strong sunlight between sessions without the use of sunblock (SPF 30). There is normally no lasting damage to the skin, but very occasionally, mild changes in texture may occur.

It's very easy to steer clear of most of the houses and roads and trek along the disused railway before heading up toward Huntington. City Walls. The classic York walk, but always a treat. Not only will you walk around two miles up above the busy streets of the city, you'll also get little treats along the way such as the Richard III and Henry VII Experience museums, a coffee house in Walmgate Bar and some incredible views of York Minster.

Uncovering York’s creative talent
the interview.. Fresh from a recent performance on BBC Radio York, and as their first EP is released, we chat to Peter Greenwood (P) and Max Dalton (M) of York band Hello Operator. How did the band get together?
Is there a good music community in York?
always helpful.
P: We met in school. We all knew of each other but met properly when the band formed.
M: There is. We’re always getting messages from other bands that like our music. It’s great to arrange to play together, which is beneficial for both bands.
M: It was big coverage for us and will hopefully lead to other things. We can’t mention anything now, but there are some really exciting things coming up.
P: There are a few online groups for gigs as well, where if someone pulls out you can see what spots are free.
Where do you see yourselves in five years?
M: It started as a band with eight members. We were about to play a gig when half the band just dropped out! The four of us who remained stayed together, and we’ve been called Hello Operator for about a year and a half now.
P: America.
What is your style and sound?
M: And there are great audiences in York. There’s a lot of support for us out there.
M: Ha, yeah that would be nice. We’d like to have played some big festivals like Leeds in the next five years.
P: We’ve been described as Blues, fuzz and roll. Also Desert rock.
You recently performed on BBC Radio York. How did that come about?
P: And America.
M: Yeah, I think Blues fuzz is pretty accurate.
P: We sent our music off to BBC Introducing, something where normally you can expect a four to six month wait to get a response. They got back to us the next day! They broadcast our song and asked for an interview.
P: Recently we were playing a charity gig at The Basement. All the other acts were acoustic, but we were full-on electric and quite loud. We asked the sound technician how we were afterwards, and he said, “You need to turn everything down.”
M: We were just gobsmacked by it all. P: And the presenter seemed to like us, which is

Keeping our communities safe: have you got what it takes? North Yorkshire and City of York multi-agency MAPPA Strategic Management Board is looking to recruit a new lay adviser to sit on its management board. MAPPA is the means by which local agencies work together to best protect York and North Yorkshire from the serious harm that some offenders may still present after being convicted for offences of a sexual or violent nature, and prevent further harm to victims. MAPPA is overseen by a Board, which includes two voluntary lay advisers who play a critical role in reviewing and monitoring all areas of MAPPA and importantly, an independent view point. The post is a voluntary part-time post and the post holder will be expected to attend at least four meetings of the Strategic Management Board per year with a requirement to attend regional meetings, contribute to local sub groups and undertake familiarisation, training and reading to enable them to understand and contribute to the meetings. The post holder will not have contact with offenders. The post does carry an entitlement to legitimate expenses such as travel and refreshments. Compensation for loss of earnings/childcare expenses may be provided. The post is subject to clearance through the Disclosure and Barring Service.
