Hello-vember!

November is here in full force. Look, there it is, running into the room with a cheeky grin on its face, lobbing a bunch of firecrackers at the dog. Cocky month! You wait till we tell your dad. November is always a bit of an odd month in the Your Local Link office. As we pack away the Halloween decorations, knowing that it will just a few weeks until we replace them with Christmas ones, we gear up to a busy time of year. Across the office you will hear frantic cries of “bonfires!”, “pantos!”, “dark mornings!”, and “Movember!” Tash for cash Yes, the month for chaps to grow a moustache to raise money for prostate cancer charities returns, and which of the Link-Boys* will be sprouting this year? Howard gets off by having a year-round face of fuzz, while Simon needs a smooth face to reduce drag

while whizzing around York delivering the magazine. However, we all think that Distribution Manager (and housewives’ favourite) Gary should grow a whopping great handlebar moustache. Find his little face below, draw one on in biro, then cut out and send to the usual address. The best one will win our collective concern.

We’ve also bolstered our ranks this month, with two new designers joining the team. A big warm welcome to Zoe and Hannah, as well as to Dani, the new office assistant. Together they’ve all contributed to a bonfireburning, time-travelling, opinionpacking, giggle-inducing, info-laden issue which will see you right through till Chrimbo. See you then!

12-13. The way I see it. Donna considers the relationship we have with our phones. 22-23. Krystal’s gems. Krystal is talking about money, money… she’s talkin’ ‘bout money, money. 62-63. Howard. Howard says YES to November. Events: 76-77. Events hotlist. The crème de la crème of this month. 78-86. Events & Gig Diary. Keep up to date with what’s on.

Rachel went to Castle Howard for the launch of Kaboom and learnt that not all marshmallows are suitable for toasting.

While visiting York Explore to see the renovation work, Howard learnt that you don’t have to be drunk and it doesn’t have to be 3am to have fun on the library roof.

And thanks to our special fireworks feature we all learnt that three sparklers held together are as hot as a blowtorch. Wow. Check out more facts, as well as all the bonfire night listings, later in the mag.

As you’ve probably guessed, we’re rather big fans of local artist Tony Brook here in the office. Tony’s paintings of York really capture the beauty and essence of the city, and his calendars and postcards have always been incredibly popular. We’ve got a feeling that the 2015 calendar will be even more popular than usual, though, with its gorgeous representation of the historic Tour de France visiting the city, as well as a painting of Terry’s Chocolate Works as you’ve never seen it before. Tony also now has all of this latest and previous works from his calendars available as Christmas cards, so you can send a little slice of York to friends and family outside of the city this festive season! n Visit www.tonybrookyorkartist.co.uk email tonybrook007@btinternet.com or call 762268. Luckily for you, we’ve got five calendars and a set of postcards to give away! To be in with a chance of winning, answer the following question: Which historic sporting event is depicted in Tony’s 2015 calendar? See below left for entry details.

Time Travel Join us as we journey back in time. No pushing.

This month: the shambles Probably York’s most famous street, The Shambles has been described as Europe’s finest street and has won numerous tourism awards for its beauty and charm. However, the ancient thoroughfare has a far less glamorous past and for centuries has been the home to many of the city’s butchers. Deriving it’s slightly odd name from the ‘shamel’ benches outside butchers’ shops, the street was first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 and probably wouldn’t have won any Google Street View awards back then. What a shambles Interestingly (well, to us) that shambolic name didn't come to be permanently associated with the street until the 1400s as prior to that it was called Haymongergate because of all the hay the butchers had shipped in to feed the soonto-be-slaughtered animals. And slaughter there was in droves, as many of the butchers had their own slaughterhouses behind the shops, causing the blood and gore to run into the main gutter flowing down the centre of the street. The Shambles was one of York's first streets to have a dedicated pavement either side of the road surface, therefore keeping

10

people's feet out of the mess. Want to see evidence of the butchers today? Some of the original hooks still exist, where once hung great hulks of meat.

A great place to meat The Shambles’ association with butchery continued to grow over the years and in 1872 there was a whopping 26 butcher's shops on the street. But by the 1930s only one remained and a time of great change for the area began. Holy Trinity church, which once stood on and dominated King's Square, was demolished, opening up the northern end of The shambles. It was also

deemed that many of the properties around the street were in such a terrible state that they also required demolition. Little Shambles, which today is just a slip of an offshoot from The Shambles onto the market, was largely cleared, as were the slaughterhouses and warehouses behind the street. The area for the modern Newgate Market was created, and restoration work began on many of the older buildings in The Shambles. The York Archaeological Society, who opposed the removal of Holy Trinity, issued a report in 1949 stating that "unless something is done quickly,

the best of york

The before and after images, one from the 1852 map and the photo from a satellite, shows just how much the area has changed. The white boxes in the photo are the roofs of modern market stalls. the same forces of insensibility and inertia will finish the job off properly and the entire Shambles area will be destroyed or converted into some monstrous piece of banality."

The defiant resident One of The Shambles' most famous past occupants was Margaret Clitherow, and telling her tale in November, the month for remembering catholic suppression, is quite apt. Margaret and her husband (who was, appropriately, a butcher) were Catholics at a time when the Queen, Elizabeth I, had outlawed practicing the faith. Margaret lived at Number 10 in the Shambles and would shelter catholic priests in a secret compartment of the house, but in 1586 she was discovered. She refused to renounce her faith

during her trail in the Guildhall and so was pressed to death on Old Ouse Bridge. In 1970 Margaret was canonised to become a saint and so a property on The Shambles was ordained as a shrine to her, each year drawing thousands of pilgrims from around the world. If you actually want to see more than just a portrait of St Margaret Clitherow, get to the Bar Convent on Blossom Street; they've got one of her hands!

Why do people do it? Unless they’re a spy or a surgeon about to be called to perform a life-saving operation, there is absolutely no need for

anyone to be in such constant contact with the rest of the world. I mean, who could possibly be interested in what you’re doing every minute of the day? Especially when the only thing you’re doing is checking your phone. But then I realised how much I use my own phone. I check my emails while I’m eating breakfast and play Candy Crush on the bus travelling to work. Throughout the day, I’m

constantly taking time out to check what’s happening on Facebook and Twitter. And in the evening, I usually have one eye on the TV while my thumbs are busy texting, googling or playing some utterly pointless game. The phone also comes in handy when it comes to those ‘Where have I seen that actor before?’ conversations. It’s great to be so connected, but it can all be a bit overwhelming, too. When do you get time to relax and switch your brain off when you’re constantly bombarding it with so much information? Time was when we’d talk to each other when we were out and about. Now we’re too busy checking out what out cyber friends are doing to make any real ones. I saw a young mum and her daughter on the way home from school the other day. The little girl had come running out of the school gates, full of excitement and desperate to tell her mum all about her day. But her mum was too busy texting to listen to her. She didn’t even make eye contact with her as they walked up the street. I thought of all the things my daughter and I used to chat about coming home from the school run, and it made me realise how much we’re missing out on. So now I’m back to daydreaming on the bus, instead of burying myself in a game. And I pass the time with real people instead of reading status updates. And I’ve started putting my phone away while I’m watching a film. True, I might never know who whatshisface is any more, but at least I can remember the plot.

Donna... Hot

I hope you don’t mind the quick plug, but I’ve got a new book out this month. A Nightingale Christmas Wish is the latest in my series of stories set in an East End hospital in the 1930s (but don’t worry if you haven’t read the previous books, you can still read it on its own. Or you could buy the rest of the series, I don’t mind). It follows the lives of a group of nurses as the country creeps towards the Second World War. It’s by Donna Douglas, it’s published by Arrow, and it makes an ideal stocking filler. Plug over. Thank you.

Quite right that they should point out their rudeness and inconsiderate behaviour. You will begin to see some new pathways that you never realized were there for you. Following those new pathways brings some peace and healing to your heart, and gives your confidence a major boost when you look to the long term future. Health aspects seem to be improving, along with energy levels and the brightness of your smile. News, knowledge, fresh information – all these things are highly relevant around the 9th and the 10th, especially where personal matters are concerned. Where jobs and careers are concerned, someone will approach you with a good idea, which you will need to modify and refine before it can work out successfully. Younger people and their impulsive actions will cause some concern between the 10th and the 20th but any advice you try to give will probably fall upon deaf ears, so you might as well save your breath.

PIscES (19th Feb - 19th March)

(23rd November - 22nd December)

(23rd December - 20th January)

(21st January - 18th February)

Something happens this month which puts everything else into perspective and you’ll find yourself having to look at a host of situations in a new light. Unexpected journeys may have some role to play in connection with parents and the welfare of older people in the family. Stay loose and flexible, keep a suitcase packed and go with the flow.

If your glass is half full while a lover or partner’s glass is half empty, there must inevitably be some different perspectives and priorities working through your life at this time. You need to get out a bit more (forget about Bermuda, Bridlington will do) and a long walk in the country doesn’t exactly cost a fortune, does it?

Although you might find it difficult to accept, your fate and fortune is very much in your own hands at this point in time. If you’re happy with what you’ve got, that’s fine, but if you’re not, only you can change it… and you DO have the power to change it. The challenge is in finding the courage to use that power.

The first week of November sees you overcoming a specific challenge, and you’ll feel healthier and stronger as a result of it. The period between the 8th and the 14th ties in with learning and education, while the 14th to the 21st highlights financial gains and business progress. A rather self satisfied smile finds a resting place on your face by month’s end.

14

November is one of those months for putting a few things to the test – this could be relationships, ideas, new cars, new jobs etc. From Autumnal trends, the indications are that you will be pleased at the outcome. One new energy revolves around the degree of support you’ll be getting from lovers and partners.

taurus (20th April - 21st May) November is never a good month for Taureans. Long dark nights lower the spirits, making you irritable and short tempered. There are some good energies around you when it comes to jobs and careers, but instead of thinking and dreaming and planning, you need to get out there and actually do some “doing”.

GEMINI (22nd May - 21st June) November will see you being taken a bit too much for granted by children and younger people in the family. Some open and candid conversations may be necessary. In your favour, it’s not just you who feels a bit used and abused – a spouse or partner will be feeling exactly the same way as you do.

CANCER (22nd June - 23rd July) Some legal aspects will be relevant this month, and possibly some deep feelings of personal injustice. There is a lightening of the load around the 10th, especially if two people find themselves pulling

together towards common goals. A much more secure and harmonious mood surrounds you during the last week.

the best of york

aries (20th March-19th April)

LEO (24th July - 23rd August) Some personal conflicts caused by pride and a fundamental lack of understanding – this cutting two ways. As much as being the sinned against you are also the sinner! Middle ground and compromises need to be found, but before you can find them, you’ve actually got to go and look for them!

virgo (24th August - 23rd September) A very productive month where careers are concerned with some special meeting or conference taking place on the 13th. Money changes hands, and even if you seem to be spending a lot, you’re getting an awful lot back for your money. Some old emotional issues are kicked into touch with feelings of fresh starts and new beginnings.

LIBRA (24th September - 22nd October) Compromises and sacrifices are called for and by giving something up you gain something so much greater in return. The third week of the month seems to auger particularly well for promotions and gains made on the job scene, while the priority for the last ten days of the month will be to sort out a personal issue which is causing some emotional concern.

full steam ahead After the success of The York Mystery Plays in 2012 and last year’s Blood + Chocolate, York Theatre Royal will once again tackle another large scale piece of theatre involving a community cast, this time in collaboration with the National Railway Museum. Taking place between 26th June-11th July 2015, STEAM will be written by Mike Kenny and Bridget Foreman, and will look at the importance of the railways to York and the city’s residents over the last 200 years. The performance will take place among the collections at the museum, before leading the audience into a 1000 seat auditorium. The aim of the project is to include a cast of 200 members of York’s community working alongside a professional team, and there will also be opportunities for York residents to get involved in stage management, costume making, front of house, publicity and many other areas. Liam Evans-Ford, Community Producer for the project, says that it’s hugely exciting to be launching another community play in the city. “Like our previous productions, STEAM will be suitable for families to get involved in, and we will welcome people who have no previous experience in theatre alongside those who have worked with us before.” n To find out more, sign up at the Theatre Royal’s website at www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk or get in touch with the Box Office on 623568.

treading new boards The lovely folks at Joseph Rowntree Theatre, which has been run by the local community since 2001, are looking to recruit five new volunteer board members. Two of the successful applicants will take up the roles of Bookings Director and Front of House Director, and the other three roles are as trustees of the charity which will cover volunteer co-ordination, fundraising and events, and theatre promotion. There will be two informal sessions in the theatre on Haxby Road where you can find out more, on 8th November and 15th November at 10am. It’s an exciting time for the theatre, with the UK’s largest student drama festival, the Shakespeare Schools Festival, using the venue at its first York partner theatre, and eight new hirers joining the existing 30 who regularly put on shows there. The theatre depends entirely upon a team of more than 150 unpaid volunteers, so if you’d like to get involved in this worthy cause, get in touch! n Visit www.jrtheatre.co.uk/vacancies or call Dan Shrimpton, Chair of Trustees, on 07511 123659.

h brothers at war My son went off the rails as a teenager and ended up leaving home to live in a hostel. After hearing nothing from him for ten years he’s suddenly turned up again and he seems like a changed person. As you can imagine, I’m thrilled. But my other son isn’t so pleased. He says I’m treating his brother as the favourite when he’s done nothing to deserve it. How can I show him I’m just happy I have my family back? Maggie, Clementhorpe Ooh, I’m having a Sunday School flashback here. This is the Prodigal Son all over again. I can understand how your son feels, but to put it another way, he’s had you to himself for ten years and now his brother’s come back and suddenly he has to share your attention. Of course you’re happy to see your long lost son, but be fair with your affections, and make sure your other son realises how much you value his love and loyalty.

h wedding woes My daughter is getting married next month, and her father has decided to attend the wedding. He has had no involvement in our children’s lives, but suddenly he wants to be there and my daughter is all for it. I’m very hurt because I’ve brought her up by myself and it’s been very hard at times. I haven’t spoken to my daughter about it but I’m so upset I feel like not turning up myself. What shall I do? Ann, Bishopthorpe I’ll tell you what you won’t do, Ann, and that’s boycott your daughter’s big day. Seeing your little girl walk down the aisle is a massive moment for any mum, and there’s no way you should miss it. Of course you’re upset about your ex showing his face, but this is your daughter’s day, and if it would make her happy to have him there, I’m afraid you’ll have to grin and bear it. Think of it as a special wedding present for your daughter. And for heaven’s sake, stay off the champagne just in case you’re tempted to settle a few old scores…

h nasty business A good friend of mine has asked to come and stay with us. The trouble is, the last time he stayed my wife and I were startled by his poor bathroom etiquette. Apart from that he’s lovely company, but how do I let him know where he’s going wrong? John, Strensall I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m dying to know what went on in that bathroom. Did he leave the seat up? Fail to flush? Or did he, like a friend of mine, mistake the wardrobe for an ensuite when he was the worse for wear (yes, it was my wardrobe and no, I’ll never wear that housecoat again). By all means, have a man to man chat with him if you feel you must. But be prepared for him to be so mortified he never darkens your door (or your bathroom) again. Personally, I feel a squirt of Mr Muscle and a quick once-round with a toilet brush is a small price to pay for the lovely company of a good friend. PS Please write back and tell me what your friend did in the bathroom.

h wrong direction? I know this might sound mad to you, but I’m a 36 year old woman and I’m obsessed with Harry Styles from One Direction. My 11 year old daughter loves him too, but she’s nowhere near as mad about him as me. I spend a lot of time looking on the internet for news and pictures of him. He’s so gorgeous, I can’t help it. What can I do? Jo, Tang Hall Try growing up. Or go off and play with your loom bands and stop bothering me.

This Month Krystal contemplates tightening the purse strings and saving money at christmas. Christmas is fast approaching. Shout out to the smart ones that bought presents month by month – you did well, I wish I was you! However, I’m not. Month by month I squander away my wages with impulsive shopping and unnecessary luxuries Come week three I’m counting down the days until payday whilst living off pasta and running my car on fumes. Christmas is a scary time for me, I can barely manage to look after

myself, let alone buy friends and family gifts. This year I want to change things up a little bit, for starters I’m writing this in October so I’ve still got three months to spread the cost of Christmas and make sure I’m not in trouble come January. Here’s a breakdown of my master plan, let’s hope it works!

Fancy Wrapping Scrap that, let’s use brown parcel paper from the pound shop and

save some serious dollar by scrapping the pricey stuff. There’s something charmingly vintage about the old school style, especially when finished off with some old ribbon.

Christmas is about other people. So I should probably stop buying daft things for myself. E.g a bright blue sparkly eye shadow that does nothing for my complexion or eye colour. #lessonlearnt

Pre-Buy, Pre-Buy, Pre Buy. There’s no harm in buying presents in phases. Keeping a conscience whilst out and about can mean you get things you genuinely think people would like instead of panic buying something that is too expensive, and not really them, at the last minute.

Plan Ahead It’s all to easy to forget about needing a sparkly new dress for the Christmas season what with all those parties you’ll be attending, I’m going to buy early and take advantage of the Preseason sales. Check out our party dress range in the health and beauty section too!

Trim down your Christmas card list The bain of everyone’s lives at Christmas. Come on let’s be ruthless give it the snip! – Here’s the check list: A) Do you actually like said recipient? B) If not do you have a moral obligation to send them one? (family, distant relative, partners family, employee) C) Have you seen them more than once this past year? D) Do they send you one?

IF YOU ANSWERED NO TO 3 OR MORE STRIKE EM OFF! Anyway I hope you find these helpful and if anyone else has any handy tips for getting through Christmas financially, I would be eternally grateful. Email krystal@yourlocallink.co.uk

Filmed and

not forgotten

During the centenary year of the First World War, the Yorkshire Film Archive are striving to put names to faces. They are asking for your help to identify the many soldiers and civilians who appear in a very special piece of film, captured in York during 1915. We paid a visit to the Archive to find out more.

versions on the Archive's website, www.yorkshirefilmarchive.com.

Faces from the past

Based inside York St John University, the Yorkshire Film Archive is a charity that finds, preserves and provides public access to films that have been made in or around Yorkshire. The ever-growing collection of film spools, tapes and DVDs currently numbers over 17,000, with more being sent in from members of the public every day. People can arrange to view original films dating back over a century and also watch digitised

24

Their current project, Filmed and Not Forgotten, aims to explore some of the old films they possess that were filmed during the First World War, particularly footage of the 5th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment parading through the city during Easter of 1915. A hundred years might have passed since the soldiers marched on their way to France, but the curators at the Yorkshire Film Archive are on the hunt for any information you might have. The footage, which was captured by local filmmaker George Trafford Drayton and which can viewed on

the YFA website, shows ranks of men lined up on St George's Field next to Skeldergate bridge. Now a car park, it is interesting to see how the site was once used, especially with views of the old prison walls around Clifford's Tower. After the camera pans across the hundreds of soldiers gathered there, and the many civilians who had come to watch the parade, the action shifts to Lendal bridge.

Rank and file It is in these shots that we get see to see most of the soldiers marching by. As the film was made to be shown in cinemas so the public could see either themselves or their loved ones on the big screen, faces appear very clearly - and it is here that you could help expand the story. If you know that

your grandfather or great-grandfather was in the regiment, perhaps you might recognise them. The Archive are keen to hear from anyone with a family connection to either the York and Lancaster Regiment, or with the occasion in general. Perhaps your ancestors were there on that day and described it to you, or wrote about it in a diary or letter - anything that builds the story around this piece of film could help.

Take your seats If watching the parade clip on the internet doesn't quite cut it for you, the Yorkshire Film Archive will be hosting a special screening of their First World War footage at the National Centre for Early Music, Walmgate, on 9th November. As part of the Aesthetica Short Film Festival, the Remembrance Sunday screening will be the perfect opportunity to see the films on the big screen, perhaps making it easier to identify familiar faces, both in uniform and not. Fireworks... are they just whizz, crack and bang? We look at their history and find some pretty explosive facts.

The first recorded use of fireworks date back to China in the seventh century. Gunpowder was mixed with other chemicals and shot into the sky during festivals and celebrations and it is from here that we get the tradition of using them during special occasions. It wasn’t until the mid seventeenth century (yes, 1000 years later) that they caught on in Europe, the same century that something pretty remarkable happened. Obviously we can all ‘remember remember the 5th of November’ and how poor Guy Fawkes, son of York

26

and catholic sympathiser, was caught red handed with a load of explosives under the House of Lords in 1605. Since then we have celebrated the failure of the Gunpowder Plot with an annual burning of a Guy Fawkes effigy atop a roaring bonfire (except at St Peters School, where burning ex pupils has never been encouraged). Fireworks were introduced to the celebrations to represent the explosions that didn’t occur on that fateful night.

The B of the Bang

But have you ever wondered how fireworks actually work? Before you go to your local display and start tearing them open using a candle to see, read on. Modern aerial fireworks (the ones that explode in the sky) are composed of several different elements that work in sequence to create that “Ooooo” moment. Here’s how it works:

The firework (which is often ball-shaped) is fired into the sky from a launcher, which is a simple tube with gunpowder inside. This fairly quiet bang also ignites the firework’s fuse.

Stars’ are small pieces of material similar to what is found coated on a hand-held sparkler. As they are thrown outwards by the bursting charge, they are also ignited, burning brightly for a few seconds. It is the stars, by way of different chemicals, that give the firework a distinct colour (or colours).

Once in the air, with everything timed so the firework reaches a certain height, the fuse ignites the bursting charge at the centre of the firework. This is the main explosive that creates the all noise and showers the ‘stars’ out in all directions.

Darwin was right If survival of the fittest is key to evolution, then there is no greater litmus test for who deserves to survive than fireworks. Seriously, go to www.youtube.com and type in ‘firework fails’ to see examples of why, as a species, we might be doomed. Remember, fireworks are essentially very pretty (but very real) bombs. Yes, bombs. n If you are having your own firework display, please check this site out first www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Fireworksafety

The Graduates

With the annual York St John University graduation ceremony taking place once again in the Minster this month, we grabbed a word with a few final year students to get their take on their time at one of York’s universities. “I really like the city life here. I’m from a country background so moving to the city was a big change for me. Now that I’m here I’m certainly never bored! Next year I’ll start looking for a job, hopefully in marketing. I’m hopeful for the future and have really enjoyed doing a business degree here.” Steven Jones, from Derbyshire.

“I’m studying music and film. This is a great university to do that as it has a fantastic film department. York is beautiful and I love the history of the place. Obviously it’s all a lot older than what I’m used to coming from the States. I think it’s a fun place and there is lots to do. Next year I’m moving back to the States and I’m hoping to pursue a music career as a singer.” Iris, from Oregon, USA.

“I think the sport department is really great at this university. The support I’ve received is really high and I love that. I’m from a small town so coming to York was great for the night life and the shops - there’s always a lot to do and I’ve really enjoyed it. I want to travel next year, and perhaps also complete a master’s degree afterwards. Eventually... well, I want to work in charities.” Lauren Wright, from Worcestershire.

“Being a mature student here makes it a big different - no crazy nights out for me. But York is a great city to be in, just for a wander around, to grab a coffee, - and even down a few pints of real ale! The city has great connections to other places as well and I’m always popping over to Leeds. I’m not too sure what my plans are for next year. I’m finishing my degree in physiotherapy and so, because I’ve already got a family in York, I’ll probably be staying to look for work.” Sam Sharman, from Hull.

If you are considering you next move, perhaps York St John University could answer your questions. Visit www.yorksj.ac.uk

Fiends reunited The old gang are back together for this year’s Theatre Royal panto! Although we’re sure you’ve enjoyed the past two York Theatre Royal pantomimes just as much as the (many, many) others, you might have noticed something was missing. The man you love to hate, pantomime villain David Leonard has spent the past two years treading the West End boards as Miss Trunchball in Matilda, but now he’s back to re-join his regular stage-mates for Old Mother Goose. Running from 11th December to 31st January, Old Mother Goose is the latest madcap festive foolishness from Berwick Kaler; as usual supported on stage by regulars Martin Barrass, Suzy Cooper and now David Leonard. When asked about his return to the York pantomime, Leonard said, “I shall bring with me something that Dame Kaler has never heard of… professionalism.” Meanwhile Berwick welcomed his old chum back with, “I only vaguely remember him.” Kaler and Leonard will face off on stage throughout the Christmas period in Old Mother Goose, a tale of good versus evil, about two fairies who battle for supremacy. And your laughs. n To secure your tickets, call 623568.

Mad world

Although I am by no means a rugby league connoisseur, can someone explain to me why City Knights coach Gary Thornton was relieved of his duties just weeks after clinching the Championship One title, and a day before being named as the coach of the year? While you’re at it, can you tell me why when I watch Sky Sports 5 there is a little annoying reminder to ‘Activate Sky Sports 5’? Another baffling one is the on-going saga relating to Yorkshire’s captain Andrew Gale, who seems to have incurred an extra ban on top of the one that cruelly prevented him lifting the County

Championship trophy, even though he sat out two fixtures as part of his ban. Of course Gale rightly sat out two games, but to stop him raising the silverware that he worked hard for all season was nothing short of disgraceful. Much as I like Joe Root, I think I went to Headingley more than he did last season due to his England exploits where ironically he played in a fixture where Jimmy Anderson was accused of a few verbals and physicals. Funnily enough the ECB took a lighter stance than they did with Gale. Oh well, let’s just hope Yorkshire have back to back success next season that will allow Gale to fully immerse himself in glory.

Farewell, Nigel

Onto football now and unfortunately for Nigel Worthington his time with York City has come to an end as the former Northern Ireland manager resigned after a 3-1 defeat at Newport County. Having steered the Minstermen to safety in 2013, an incredible unbeaten run last season brought with it a playoff spot, but this campaign just wasn’t getting going and Worthington decided to cut ties with the club. Having had the pleasure of interviewing Nigel back in August, it seems a great shame that this hasn’t worked out as his vision and passion were clear to see. Sadly recent fixtures had entertainment value on a par with Taylor Swift’s latest album, but with the loan signings of strikers Ryan Brunt and Italy U19 International Diego de Girolamo to add firepower, perhaps there is light at the end of tunnel for Russ Wilcox, the new man in charge.

Different kind of club Sir Alex Ferguson has been back in the limelight, not with regards to football, but golf, as the Europe Captain Paul McGinley got the former Red Devils boss to do an inspirational speech ahead of their 10-6 victory over the USA in the Ryder Cup. I’m not sure if the rumours are true that US Captain Tom Watson enlisted the help of David Moyes in response. FREE Courtesy Car Subject to T&C’s

Now THAT’S cricket As the nights begin to draw in, I wanted to make mention of a local cricket story to warm our hearts and cast our minds back to those beautiful sunny Saturdays of the summer. Sheriff Hutton Bridge and their second 11 have just completed back to back promotions in the York and District Senior Cricket League, losing just one game out of a possible 44 over the past two seasons. They will now embark on a new season at their highest ever level and although the challenge will be tough, it will be one that Sherriff Hutton Bridge will relish. No matter what level any game is played at, to achieve such success is excellent and testament to the team spirit and practice the lads have put in. The club, that has produced Yorkshire and England U19 starlet Matthew

Fisher, appears to be going from strength to strength. Captain of the team Danny Kiernan will want to see his side make it three promotions in a row as the club resume their training in early December.

iFit Active Fitness Band.

Piper.

You can keep your fancy Apple Watches and Galaxy Gears – we want a wrist-based piece of kit that is simple to use. We were sent an Active Fitness Band from iFit, a hi-tech pedometer and distance tracker designed to go wherever your run, walk, or cycle takes you. The tiny gadget fits into either a watch strap or a waistband clip and counts your steps, how far you’ve travelled, and also calculates your calorie use and intake. The bright LED screen is very easy to navigate and on the wrist its looks sleek and is quite the conversation starter. Unfortunately its only served to highlight just how unfit we all are. And we thought the regular jaunts to the biscuit barrel were keeping us healthy!

These days a wailing burglar alarm just doesn’t cut it when securing your home. Thanks to your WiFi network you can keep an eye on all your stuff, even when sunning yourself in Rio. Piper is a special security system that, by way on a built-in camera (Howard’s favourite thing for any gadget to have) and motion sensor, will contact you via the internet if it detects an intruder. It can also connect to other automated gadgets in your home to switch on lights (burglars hate those) and also issue an ear piercing scream. We have all the latest news from things that go vroom!

Watch out

With the recent announcement of the Apple Watch, a smartwatch that connects wirelessly to your phone to display texts, emails, and calls, the Department for Transport has issued warnings to drivers. Concerned that smartwatches like the Apple Watch could further distract motorists, the DfT has issued a statement saying that the new technology is being treated just like a mobile phone, and people who cause accidents as a result of using it while driving could face up to two years in prison. And no, there isn’t an app to get you out of there.

Paper no more You might have heard on the news recently that from January 2015 all new driving licenses and renewals will not include a paper counterpart element. That means that only the photocard will be issued, which will apparently lead to less hassle for both motorists and the government. However, some people have been wondering how it will affect them, especially if they still have the old style paper-only license. The good news is that things will only have to change when you update or renew your license, at which point just a photocard will be issued. So get practicing that winning smile.

A FLYING BIKE! We all hate being stuck in traffic jams. If you’ve ever dreamt of pressing a button on your dashboard and suddenly lifting up to soar over the other vehicles, quit dreaming; that time is now. The Pal-V One Helicycle is a two-seat hybrid car which, after a quick transformation, turns into a helicopter that can fly at an altitude of 4000 feet. Not only is that pretty impressive, but while in

36

road mode it can achieve a speed of 112mph. If you would like to own one (and we have plans to order one for every staff member) you’ll need a driving license and a Sports Pilot Certificate. Oh, and £230,000. Right, so 25 staff members at Your Local Link, times £230,000… Erm, we might have to start charging for the mag from next month…

• Keep your course. Strong winds can blow your car off course, so keep both hands on the wheel and feel for pressure pushing you either way. • Keep ‘em peeled. If the wind is strong enough to affect your car, think about other vehicles. Stay attentive to other motorists just in case they haven’t heeded the first point as well as you. • Keep clear. Winds will invariably blow debris onto the road, particularly twigs and branches from trees. Steer clear of objects in your path, even if they appear small and light. • Keep stocked up. Just like driving in harsh wintery weather, make sure you have a fully charged mobile phone with you, as well as warm weatherproof clothing – just in case you get stranded.

Go slow

Nowadays, rushing out of the door with a piece of toast in your mouth while also trying desperately to check your emails is an all too common occurrence. However, luckily there’s an antidote to the fast pace of modern life, and it comes with bubbles and hot water. And thanks to the folks at Watermark, we can enjoy a little luxury at the same time. The stunning Aveo free-standing bathtub by Villeroy & Boch is available from Watermark Bathrooms, along with

Ask the expert

Design De-mystified by Becs #4

Realising your ideas The final part of this mini-series is all about getting your ideas off the page and into reality. By now you should know your space inside-out, and have a clear vision of what you would like to achieve. Now it’s time to consider the icing on the cake, the decorative elements that really bring a space to life. For this, it’s useful to think in layers: start with surface finishes, then fixtures, gradually working your way out to furniture and accessories. In the industry this is known as FF&E, or Furniture, Fittings & Equipment.

Surface finishes Think in 3D and consider the following: Floors: What floor covering are you going for – does it need to be washable, or fit in with the period or style of the property? Walls: Wallcoverings – wallpaper, tongue & groove boards, painted, or exposed brick or stone. Will you have a feature wall? Windows: Do they need some maintenance, if you live on a main road would they benefit from frosted film? How would you dress them? Ceilings: Is a straight plaster finish all that is required? You

44

could opt for a patterned paint finish if it’s a child’s bedroom, or drapes if you’re going for the four-poster bed look. Dropped ceilings with lighting recesses aren’t just the preserve of hotels. Whatever finish you choose, just make sure it has sufficient fireresistant properties.

Architectural details

These can add bucket loads of character to a seemingly plain space, just make sure you don’t over-egg the pudding. Think about ceiling roses, cornices, wall recesses, storage elements, fire surrounds and the hearth.

Light fittings

Lighting really can make or break a scheme so it’s worth putting in some real thought. Where possible, try and test out the lamps you are proposing first to ensure you like the effect. A friend recently had some recessed lighting fitted by a builder, only for it to look fluorescent and office-like when switched on – it never gets used now! Think about dimmer switches, main light vs side lights. Standard lamps, bedside lamps, even fairy lights. Recessed lighting, spot lights, LED or energy efficient bulbs. Visible bulbs or hidden? Shades or no lampshades…

This is the last in a long line of considerations, but we often (mistakenly perhaps) want to start here first. By following the correct order you will have avoided spending your budget on superfluous items. Again think in 3D for this one: • Floors: Rugs, pouffes & floor cushions • Walls: Artwork, vinyl graphics, accessories & frames • Mantlepiece: a great place to style your trinkets • Lighting: do you have any key pieces that would benefit from a dedicated light source? A lot of this is common sense, but with busy lives and time at a premium we often neglect to dedicate thinking time to our home. But don’t forget, it is your haven and deserves some serious consideration too!

your home & garden

Accessories

Furniture

This is a big consideration and if you are buying new it’s likely to be a large portion of your budget, so not something to be decided on with haste! If you are looking to incorporate existing items, you can refresh them to fit in with the new scheme using throws, cushions, re-upholstering etc.

without the price tag Richard James can offer truly affordable decadence. When it comes to planning your kitchen, bedroom or home office, the words ‘bespoke’, ‘handmade’ and ‘individually designed’ bring to mind gorgeous, luxurious spaces – and a price tag to match. Just contemplating what the cost would be for a personalised kitchen is enough to send most of us heading straight to the nearest chain store for a one size fits all number, regardless of the fact that, usually, one size doesn’t in fact fit all, and you’re left with a large hole in your purse and a kitchen that doesn’t meet your needs. However, that genuinely isn’t the case with Richard James, a family-run carpentry business based in Flaxton, just north of York. Not only can Richard Patterson, the owner of the business, and his team beat the prices

of the chain stores, they can work around your individual requirements, budget and living space to create a space you will adore for years to come. We should know – our Sales Executive Mim has used their services herself. As you can probably guess, Mim was pretty impressed. “The kitchen furniture has been designed around me and my family, not my kitchen,” says Mim. “Richard Patterson personally came to give me a quote for my new kitchen the day I enquired, and I had my plans the very next day. He even advised me on different layouts which would allow for more cupboard space, and the customer service was nothing short of excellent – I was kept assured that things were running smoothly

throughout. I’m so chuffed with my new kitchen and unbelievably, it was £1500 less than the quote I got from B&Q!”

Take a look at the gallery on the website and prepare to be stunned – the work that the team create is seriously gorgeous.

Richard, a carpenter with 25 years of experience in making handmade and bespoke furniture both nationally and internationally, deals personally with all of his customers, and everything that he and his team make is carefully made using traditional methods and high quality materials at the workshop in Flaxton. He personally ensures that the highest level of quality and care is taken throughout each and every project, no matter how big or small. Whether you want a single piece of furniture or a fully fitted out kitchen, Richard and the team pride themselves on ensuring it meets and surpasses your desires.

We get the low-down from electrical expert Matt Todd of Herbert Todd & Son. I am very pleased to be able to say that Herbert Todd & Son have managed to make it to the finalist stage of the prestigious York Business Awards. This is the first time we have been nominated, and though filling out application forms is not one of my favourite pursuits it allowed me to reflect on all that we have accomplished over the last year. Changes we make are all for the single purpose of making the customer experience better, because without new and returning customers there would be no Herbert Todd and son! So what have we been up to? The internet now plays a huge role in most of our lives, whether it be the kids digging away on Minecraft (don’t ask!) or hours lost to Twitbook. Internet shopping has made it easier than ever to research, browse and buy from the comfort of our own homes, but in the electrical industry the majority of sales are still made face to face. We have made sure our website is easy to use and full of facts and figures to assist customers researching our products, but

Advertisers Announcement

Safe as houses At Keepsafe Window and Door Repairs, they treat the big and small jobs just the same. In fact, some big jobs can be tackled with a small, easy fix. Here’s what they can offer to keep your home in top notch condition.

Double glazing

Windows

The seals used in some types of double glazing can break down after a while, and this can mean that condensation forms between the sheets of glass. This can cause several problems – not only does it look unsightly, but it can also reduce the window’s energy efficiency. But there’s not necessarily any need to replace the whole set – at Keepsafe we can replace individual panes of glass, which reduces the cost hugely. We can provide a comprehensive range of replacement units, including square leaded, diamond leaded, Georgian bar and coloured lead, as well as energy efficient Pilkington K Glass and Saint Gobain Planitherm glass.

uPVC windows are generally long lasting, but after a while they can start to look old and tired. However, that doesn’t mean that you necessarily need to replace the whole thing. We keep a huge range of replacement parts in stock, and by swapping parts like handles, brackets, locks and hinges, the look of your whole window can be lifted. As part of the service, we will also check that the window is still sound in terms of security and safety.

Doors The great thing about uPVC doors is that they have become ever more secure in recent years, but if you have an older version and are worried about how safe it is, you don’t necessarily have to replace the

whole thing. We can install a brand new, and more efficient, lock to your existing door, and replace any thin or damaged panels to make sure it works as well as the new versions. Not only that, but we also offer this repair and modernising service on sliding patio doors, so you can rest safe in the knowledge that every point of entry to your home is protected.

Ask Chris...

Got a gardening question?

Chris Brown from Brown’s Nurseries can help sun’s rays. However, this does not mean they can survive without any light at all – all green leaved plants need light to photosynthesize. Some, however, are more tolerant of lower light levels than others, and it is these that are most successful when planted in shade. Here are a few shrubs that do well in the shade: Crinodendron, Euonymus, Daphine Hyranga, Skimmia, Aucuba, Osmantus Tricolour, Sarcocca Confusa, Rhododendrons, Azalea, and Symphoricarpos. And as for perennials that do well. There is:

Q.

Can you recommend some shrubs and perennials that will tolerate shade?

You may be surprised at the range of shrubs suitable for growing in the shade. Many are woodlanders in the wild, preferring to grow where they are not directly exposed to the

Epimedium, Euphorbia “Robbiae” Cyclamen, Hederifolium, Dicentra “Formosa” , Actaea “Rubra”, Corydalis “Flexuosa”, Sanguinaria “Plena”. You could also plant bulbs in the same area such as crocus, bluebells, snow drops, Erythronium “Trout Lilly” and also a wide range of dwarf daffodils which will brighten a dark area.

Putting down roots With autumn now here I would like to see more trees planted, as some of our tress are under threat from diseases, storms and insects. I believe that all plants, no matter how small, are important. But, I confess, trees are to me the most inspirational. This is partly due to their size, but more importantly the sense of continuity and permanence that they bring to a garden. To plant a tree, particularly a potentially large or long-lived one, is to express a belief in the future. They also provide a framework and backbone to the garden, to tie in other plants. Large tress can offer shade to other plants and to people, and right now deciduous trees give you beautiful autumnal colours. Rich orange, browns, yellows, and reds. They offer a variety of shapes and sizes, which should give you protection from the elephants… tee hee… elements, pollution, noise and prying eyes. Most importantly they provide food for wildlife and shelter to build nests. I dug a sapling oak from a hedgerow on our farm in Wigginton in 1973, when I was 18 years old. The Lord Mayor of York had it planted on the green near the squash courts in Wigginton Village, and that same tree is about 30 feet high now and a joy for everyone to see. So go on, plant a tree to remember.

taking on trees Every garden, no matter what the size, should have a tree. As well as the aesthetic value of their bark, flowers, foliage and fruits, they also perform other important roles such as screening unsightly buildings and objects, providing shade, reducing noise levels, acting as a wind break, providing habitat for wildlife, and cleaning up airborne pollution.

Size matters Trees are available for even the smallest courtyard or patio garden. Dwarf varieties and rootstocks of many friut trees including cherries, peaches, pears and nectarines are availble and lend themselves ideally to growing in large pots. Also, many varieites of ornamental plants are grafted on to stems that go on to produce small trees growing up to 2.4m-3m (8-10ft). Examples of these include Photinia, Euounymus, Prunus, Cotoneaster and Salix. These too are ideal for growing in pots.

Tree tops Some of the best trees for the average size modern suburban garden include: Amelanchier canadensis ballerina (Snowy Mespilus). This is a small tree with an upright habit eventually reaching 3-4m (10-12ft). The new foliage emerges bronze and at the same time a profusion of small white flowers are produced. The foliage fades to green over the summer turning again into fiery shades of red and orange in autumn.

Prunus x subhirtilla autumnalis rosea (Pink Autumn Cherry). A small spreading tree reaching 3-4m (10-12ft) high and wide. As the name suggests, it starts to produce its small pale pink, single flowers in late October and continues throughout the winter and early spring. Prunus ‘Snow Showers’ (Weeping Cherry). This small tree has a very narrow weeping habit with an eventual size of no more than 1.8m

(6ft) high and 1m (3ft) wide. The weeping branches are completely smothered in single white flowers from the end of March into April. Again, it has the added bonus of good autumn foliage colour. Pyrus calleryana chanticleer (Ornamental Pear). An incredibly underated medium sized tree with an narrow pyramidal habit eventually reaching 6-8m (18-24ft). It produces large quantities of very hardy frost-

Astek Garden design & build resistant creamy white flowers in April, making it much more reliable than some of the earlier flowering cherries. Malus ‘Gorgeous’ (Ornamental Crab Apple). A compact tree living upto its name, often grafted onto a semi-dwarfing rootstock that gives an eventual height of around 4-6m (12-18ft). Sweetly scented apple blossom pink flowers are produced in abundance during late April and May, followed by glossy red and yellow crab apples that persist on the tree well into November. They can also be picked and used to make jelly. Sorbus ‘Autumn Spire’. This small tree has a narrow upright habit eventually reaching 4-5m (12-15ft). Clusters of creamy white flowers are produced in May, which are followed by golden yellow berries by late August. It really comes into its own during late

September and October when it produces some of the best autumn foliage colour of any small tree; fiery reds and purples which really help to show off the bright golden berries.

GROW YOUR OWN with Debbie Pendle from Brunswick Organic Nursery

Ask debs @ brunswick nursery

Q.

Slugs have completely eaten my greens. What can I do? I guess that by greens you mean brassicas or cabbages and their family relatives kale, broccoli and sprouts! You have my sympathy as they are indeed a problematic group of plants when it comes to pests. The key here is to be vigilant and check your plants on a regular basis. By doing this you can act quickly when problems arise, whereas left unchecked you will lose your crop completely. Start by making your garden less welcoming! Keep your plot tidy, the grass cut short and avoid using bricks as bed edges as this will leave them more exposed to natural predators. Slugs are more of a problem on wet sites and clay soils; improve drainage by adding organic matter and keep weed free. Water accurately and only when necessary, and if possible water crops in the morning to allow the soil surface to dry out quickly. Use organic slug pellets to keep them off new plants while they get established. This also may be the work of the yellow and black caterpillars of the cabbage white butterfly. They are voracious feeders on brassicas and can, if left unchecked, totally defoliate your plants. Squash eggs and caterpillars as they are found and grow crops under fine mesh netting to prevent the butterflies laying their eggs. The netting will also keep the pigeons off if they happen to be a problem in your area.

Q.

Are raised beds better than planting direct into soil? Having ‘permanent’ beds divided with pathways is definitely good practice as you can avoid walking on them by cultivating from the edges, which will help with compaction problems and the spread of soil borne diseases. It is also less wasteful regarding soil treatments such as manure, compost, fertilisers and watering as you can target more specifically the growing space. You should certainly consider building beds to raise the soil level by 15cm to increase the root

depth on shallow soil and improve drainage on heavy soil so it warms up quicker in spring. Raised beds are highly productive as deeper beds enable you to grow plants closer together, which is a definite advantage if space is an issue. Disabled gardeners and people who suffer from back problems would also find a raised bed system easier to work with. Raised beds should be no wider than 120cm so you can reach the centre easily from either side. Major paths between beds should be wide enough to accommodate a wheelbarrow. Got a problem with your pet? Tracey Pulleyn of Minster Vets answers your pet questions

Q.

My rabbit lives indoors. Do I need to get her vacinated?

Vaccination is a very important tool to help prevent the spread of disease and the devastating effects on the individual animal. However, many people are not aware that they can vaccinate rabbits. There are two main diseases that rabbits are susceptible to which we can vaccinate against. The first is myxomatosis, the second being viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD). Both of these diseases are usually fatal, and in the case of VHD often with no warning, and there is no cure for these viruses. Myxomatosis is is spread by fleas or midges biting the rabbit or by coming in contact with another infected rabbit. Due to the involvement of biting insects, you need not even be close to an area of infected wild rabbits. Although your rabbit lives indoors, and is probably at a lower risk, it is still at some risk of the disease from midges entering the house from outside, or fleas being brought in on another household pet, or animal entering the garden. Vaccination of rabbits is recommended on an annual basis.

Q.

How can I stop my French Bull Dog snapping at everybody, mainly children? Canine aggression is something that needs to be taken very seriously given the potentially very serious effects of a dog bite. Firstly contact your veterinary practice to make an appointment with your vet for them to examine your dog to ensure that there is not medical or physical reason for the dog to be acting in this way. Your vet then will be able to advise you of a professionally trained behaviourist. Costs of behaviour therapy often incorporate visits to the house to examine the dog in its own environment and detailed discussions about the problem. It is important to remember that canine aggression is not going to resolve in one visit and can often take months, or longer, to rectify. However in some cases, unfortunately, the dog will never recover from the aggression and further discussion with the behaviourist and the vet may be required about the practicalities, risks and concerns about living with a dog with these issues.

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.

r e b m e v Yes-

November is probably my favourite month. Sure, it doesn’t have the autumnal visual pop of October, or the festive razzmatazz of December, but I’ve always loved this time of year nevertheless.

prepared for 5th November (unlike, say, 25th December which requires annual preparation) which means that, despite the apparent whinges at loud bangs all night and the fact that just anyone can buy gunpowder-fuelled rockets (I mean, seriously?), I rather quite like it. You don’t even have to go to the bother of attending an organised event; just switch off your lights and peer out of an upstairs window. No presents to buy and give, and no tree to decorate either.

I was describing what a year ‘felt’ like to my wife the other day, and how I thought time progressed a little bit like a slow moving rollercoaster. July and August are like cresting a summit before steadily descending down into September and October. November is the bit at the bottom that makes your tummy feel funny as you start to climb up again into December. Surely that makes sense to everyone? Regardless of my weird way of perceiving the passing year, I’m really looking forward to battening down the hatches and cuddling up with the family all month. November always feels like a break month; a gap between festivities and celebrations. In October there’s both mine and my daughter’s birthday, as well as the dreaded party-causing, door-knock-creating Halloween. And of course in December there’s that holiday period at the end of the month that seems quite popular. Because of this, November feels a bit like a month off.

Options It is for this reason that Bonfire Night is the perfect occasion for November, because it just sort of happens, doesn’t it? I for one have never actively

There should be more festivals like Bonfire Night. Perhaps we could start an ‘opt-in’ system where, if you really want to get in the Christmas spirit, you travel to Lapland to stay in specially designed ‘Christmas Camps’ and are attended to by elves and trained reindeer. The rest of us who decided not to bother can stay home and just get on with life without distractions. Maybe there’s a Big Brother type TV show which shows how all the Christmas people are getting on in Lapland. It’ll be just like looking out of a window on 5th November, I suppose... but you also get to vote on who’s been naughty or nice. Whatever you’re doing this month, be it narrowly avoiding blowing yourself up, or snuggling up by the warmth of a roaring fire, have a good one and savour the time off.

SWIMMING LESSONS

Cull Month

Ever thought a cull of your Facebook friends might be a good idea? November is a great month to do it. If you’re using your festive gap to buy a few early Christmas presents (and surely November is as early as you can buy Christmas presents, right?) having fewer friends will mean having to buy fewer presents. It also means you won’t have to write tired and forced messages on the walls of distantly-known, distantly-located friends such as “Have a gr8 xmas”, which basically translates as “We’re not really a part of each other’s lives, are we? If it wasn’t for the convenience of the internet...”

do you want to host an international student?

If Bonfire Night just isn’t your thing, and even steal-watching the neighbour’s fireworks doesn’t cut it, activate your imagination. While watching a display of fireworks, be it big or small, just imagine that every bang and crackle in the sky is actually an attempt to shoot down an invading (and invisible) alien space ship. You’ll soon be cheering your neighbour on to set the fireworks off quicker, and to aim better, lest the aliens land and start to steal our cereals. They come from a planet lacking in breakfast foods, you see. Tragic really...

Bright World Guardianships takes care of international students in UK boarding schools. We are looking for families to host our students for some weekends and half terms. This can be a very rewarding role and provides families with a valuable extra income.

We are committed to safeguarding international children and our host families play a vital role in this as well as giving students a home from home in the UK.

Understanding advocacy

Sometimes we need someone on our side to help us to get what we need. But if we don’t have family members or friends around to assist us, it can be tough knowing who to turn to. Thankfully, the good folks at OCAY (Older Citizens Advocacy York), an independent, registered charity that offers a free advocacy service for all York residents over the age of 50, are here to help. Advocacy simply means supporting people to say what they want to say to the people or organisations that they want to say it to. It is all about representing the client’s views and wishes, not those of the Advocate, and it enables people to take control of their own lives. n If you think you might benefit from a trained, volunteer Advocate’s services, pop into the office at 52, Townend Street, York (between 10am-3pm MondayThursday, 10am-2pm Friday), email info@ocay.co.uk or call 676200.

Do you feel the odd twinge in your back? Does your neck ever give you bother? It could be down to your office set up. Check out our dos and don’ts to make sure your work space is working for you. Do: • Sit back in your seat. This allows your chair to help support your back. • Check your chair is at the right height. Your wrists should rest comfortably on your desk, and your elbows should be at right angles. Your feet should also touch the floor, but if they don’t then use a footrest to prop them up. • Angle your chair forward a little so that your knees are slightly lower than your hips. This is a good position for your spine. • Keep your monitor at arm’s length. The top of the screen should be at eye level, so that your neck is kept straight when you look at your screen. If it’s too low, use a screen raiser to correct the height.

Don’t: • Sit in the same spot for too long – try to move around every half an hour, even if it’s only to make a coffee or walk to the photocopier.

• Use the stairs. Keeping active is a great way to strengthen your back and also relieve tension.

• Sandwich the phone between your neck and shoulder. If you need to talk and type at the same time, use a headset. Cradling the phone in this way can cause pain not only in the neck and shoulder, but also in the arms and hands.

• Get out of the office at lunchtime. A 20 minute walk every day will do wonders for your back, as well as help to prevent heart disease and lower stress levels.

• Stretch for your mouse – keep it close to your keyboard. Stretching like this can cause tension in your shoulder.

68

• Slouch! Your mum was right all along. Slumping or sitting cross-legged puts unnecessary strain on your spine and pelvis, as they’re in an unbalanced position. • Keep your handbag or briefcase under your desk – unless there’s plenty of room. You should have enough space for your feet to sit in their natural resting position. • Cover your desk with papers. Keeping everything in a tray will ensure that your mouse and keyboard don’t end up in a strange position, which could put strain on your back, neck and shoulders.

Fail to plan...

If you have set the date for your own big day... congratulations. Right, now that pleasantries are set aside, there’s so much to do! Your summer wedding might seem like a lifetime away, but getting a head start will guarantee the day will be everything you’ve hoped for. Villa Farm, Wigginton Road, should be your next port of call on 15th-16th November, as their jam-packed wedding fair will feature everything you need to feel truly inspired. With special focus on Dark Moon Marquees, this will be the fair that you will tell your future kids about. n Call 487129.

Guess who’s back? The team at Ludwicks, the gentlemen’s hairdressing salon based on Burton Stone Lane, are thrilled to welcome veteran hairdresser Mark Hagues back into the ranks. Mark is a popular choice amongst clients thanks to his ten years of experience in men’s hairdressing, which will bring the total number of years’ experience of the four-piece team up to 75. That’s the same amount of years as it’s been since The Wizard of Oz was first screened… Wow. What’s even more astounding is that John has 35 years of experience all by himself! Joanna isn’t too far behind with 20 years, and Ania has a decade under her belt. Impressive. Ludwicks offer men’s hairdressing for all ages, there’s no appointment necessary and free on street parking is available. n Call 656506.

WINTER HAIR CARE

As Winter descends upon us it’s time to start looking after our locks, we’ve gone to the trouble of trying out as many products as we can to give you the low-down on how best to get those tresses on top form ready for the Christmas party season.

Lee Stafford repair oil

It smells lovely when you put it on and your hair still smells of it the next day. It can make your hair feel a little greasy the morning after you've washed it, but after styling it no longer looks or feels greasy. It also makes your hair look and feel healthier and will stand the test of time due to only needing a small amount of product per application. - Tested by Hannah.

RRP £10.99

Re-juvenate mask Nanokeratin system.

After years of bleaching my hair the ends have become very dry and brittle. Re-juvinate is a thick moisturiser with a clean fragrant smell. After my first application my hair felt less like straw and more like cotton. After the 2nd application my hair had become smooth and silky. I have had lots of comments about the condition of my hair and how nice it’s looking. Although the Rejuvunate is quite costly I will be asking santa for the shampoo and conditioner. Tested by Claire.

RRP £57.29

72 10

Lee Stafford Oily roots, dry ends shampoo

Firstly I absolutely LOVE the pretty pink packaging (as a designer I like his font choice and logo too) and, as with all Lee's haircare products, they smell YUMMY! This product is specifically designed to treat the common problem of oily roots and dry ends - which describes my hair type perfectly since I dip dyed the ends! This shampoo does exactly what it says on the bottle - breathes life back into lank, lifeless, oily hair whilst also helping to detoxify it! My hair has definitely felt cleaner for longer and it smells amazing.-Tested by Rachel.

RRP £8.99

Tanorganics Oil Arganic

Not only can you use the oil arganic on your hair, you can also use it on nails, and skin, This is one of the most versatile products I’ve had the pleasure to come accross! great for smothing down frizz and providing ends with a bit of on the go nourishment, I also used it on my nails, great all rounder! Tested by Krystal.

RRP £24.99

Revlon Hydra elixir.

I used the revlon Elixir in two ways, I applied it when wet before drying, which provided me with a healthy glossy finish and when my ends started to look a bit dry I’d smooth it on too. A great luxurious product that gives a salon finish and smells like you’ve been to the salon too. Top marks. Tested by Krystal.

RRP £10.99

Pretty as a picture

Now that the festive party season is almost upon us, here in the office most of us are pondering how we’re going to get glam for those soirees (apart from Howard, who is probably just going to wear his Jedi costume again). Luckily, we’ve found the perfect way to make ourselves feel super gorgeous thanks to the team at Sculpture Hair and Beauty. The salon on Lowther Street, which was taken under new management in July, is offering early evening pamper parties that will help to prepare us for big Christmas nights out, as well as tailor made pamper packages (we’re putting that firmly on our Christmas list). There are also princess parties available for little ones, and late night opening on Thursdays and Fridays so that you can squeeze a treatment into that busy festive schedule. The team offer a comprehensive range of hair, beauty and massage treatments, as well as wedding prep and Wella products, so give them a call to see how they can help you feel fabulous! n Call 634967.

Hair and Beauty Q&A

ASK THE EXPERT Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas!

This month, she reveals all about Dermapen treatments. Lost weight or had a baby recently? Left with unsightly stretchmarks? Then Dermapen is for you. The new latest technology in micro needling delivers high speed needling allowing increased microscopic skin puncturing compared to that of a handheld device such as a dermaroller. This allows for improved results and less pain. What is Dermapen Therapy? Genuine Dermapen therapy is an advanced motorised micro-medical skin-needling procedure. The use of the needles stimulates the skin to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely, which can result in brighter, healthier, smoother and youngerlooking skin. Is Dermapen treatment safe? It’s an absolutely safe and precise procedure when performed by a trained therapist. The Genuine Therapy works by puncturing the outermost layers of your skin, creating

74

tiny pin prick like injuries. These microscopic wounds help to stimulate new collagen deposition, which continues to work until indented scars and deep lines are filled. What are the benefits of the Dermapen? Improved experience with reduced pain, better results and faster treatment times the new dermapen is a much more advanced treatment compared to the old needling techniques. The results from Dermapen treatment can be amazing, especially when working on old scars or stretchmarks, as well as generally rejuvenating and revitalising the appearance of the skin. The healing time is rapid and the treatment is relatively painless, as there is no removal of healthy skin during the procedure. It’s suitable for all skin types, and does not result in any skin sensitivity to UV light. When will I see the results? Wounds can close in as little as one hour, but the visible signs of rejuvenation may not be seen for

another six to eight weeks. However, the results can continue to improve for up to a year after treatment. Does DermaPEN therapy hurt? Your therapist will apply local anaesthetic to the affected area, and allow half an hour for this to numb it. After that, the procedure itself takes between 20 and 30 minutes and is virtually painless. What happens after Dermapen treatment? A soothing cream will be applied, which should be regularly applied for the following couple of days. The treated area may look red or slightly swollen for the first 24 hours, and may look a little like mild sunburn; however this is normal and not painful, and nothing to worry about. How many Dermapen sessions will I need? The first treatment usually yields significant results, but your practitioner may recommend between three and five treatments for optimum, long lasting effects.

You may be suffering with Scrooge Syndrome – but don’t worry; we have the cure! Head for a festive afternoon tea with carols at Cedar Court Grand. The hotel is also thrilled to welcome renowned chef Craig Atchinson to the team. So up-market

We’re pretty proud of our markets here in York, and it seems that as of 10th November we’ll have another reason to be smug. That’s because the newly refurbished Shambles Market will open then, having returned to its home between Parliament Street and The Shambles. The £1.6million makeover has introduced new canopies to increase daylight levels, better weatherproofing to keep us all out of the rain, new look stall and kiosks, and extensive York Stone paving repairs. There will even be WiFi throughout the market and posh lighting. We can’t wait to see it! The market will be open daily from 9am-5pm every day of the year except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Christmas cracker! We love the festive spirit here at Your Local Link, but we reckon the folks at family-run Beechwood Close Hotel may have beaten even us in the Christmassy-feeling stakes! The restaurant is offering a whole host of festive fare throughout December, with Christmas Disco Nights on Friday and Saturday evenings which include a three course Christmas meal, plus an evening of revelry. Local businesses are already flocking to book their Christmas parties at the venue, with a range of tasty, homemade food served alongside a generous portion of welcoming hospitality; and there’s also a Christmas lunch and evening menu on offer in the restaurant throughout December. If you’d like to eat out on the big day itself, the staff at Beechwood Close will be happy to offer you a whopping (and delicious) six course lunch menu. Boxing Day is covered, too, with a yummy carvery. n Email info@beechwood-close.co.uk or call 658378.

As the city prepares for the usual darkness of those autumn nights to be blasted away by a wash of colour, we speak to one of the lead artists involved in this year’s Illuminating York. Who are you and what do you do? My name is Alex Tennyson. I’m a technologist and artist and I’ve been a member of art group Seeper since very early on and I have also recently formed my own collective, Typeone.

Taking centre stage at The Eye of York, Hidden Worlds will be a light show like no other, shedding light on the story of York scientist John Snow. We spoke to Alex Tennyson to find out more.

How did Seeper come about and what does it do? Seeper was founded by Evan Grant almost 20 years ago. It's an arts and technology studio that creates things for events and permanent installations. Our clients range from brands to public institutions, performers and entertainers. Seeper isn't

interested in purely screen based experiences - which are so often forgettable - so our work uses technology in real-world settings to engage the senses and, we hope, to create memories for our audience. Why John Snow as inspiration for Hidden Worlds? John Snow’s legacy has so much relevance right now. The study of epidemiology continues to save more and more lives every day. On a more personal level, as code based artists, the world of bacteria, cell division, patterns, cause and effect etc means something

in a different sense as these organic phenomena are so often inspiration for the computer based work that we create. What can people expect from Hidden Worlds? People can expect to be entertained. We really want hidden worlds to be exciting and fun. What is next for Seeper? Among other things, Seeper is busy creating special effects for a massive visitor attraction opening next Summer.

We are also working with schools on a project bringing interactive audiovisual experiences to engage and develop kids with learning difficulties. If you hadn’t taken the career path you have, what would you have done? My dad is a Physicist and I think deep down I have a bit of a longing to explore the world the way he does, so I would probably answer... mad professor!

See Hidden Worlds for yourself at the Crown Court by Cliffords Tower, 29th October-1st November. Visit www.illuminatingyork.org
