PAULA

Be prepared! It may be the motto of the erstwhile Scouts, but 'be prepared' is a very appropriate slogan for this time of year. As the summer winds down and the new school term beckons, have you got your kids ready for everything September might throw at them? Although you might have already raided the stationers and school uniform outfitters, did you know that this very copy of Your Local Link comes with several child-friendly modes? Included as always are two free staples which, when carefully removed, can be used to bind your child's first piece of homework, therefore impressing their new teacher and getting the term off to a great start. Skies above Buts that's not all. Once they've consumed every wonderful word across all the many well laid-out features, each page can be pulled out,

But it isn't all about showing off. When pulled free of the rest of the mag, the glossy front and back pages will, once a bit or origami magi has been applied, make a wonderful rain hat, making your kid weatherproof as summer chaotically transitions into autumn. All that, and you paid nowt for it. Beat that W H Smith! Be sure also that your child reads the Time Travel and Gillygate features to bone up on their history, the Health & Beauty section to inspire their new-term fitness routine, and also the Gadget Guide so they can dream of a future where robots go to school in their place. Ahhh...

“Hello, I’m Brian,” came a thunderous rumble along with a firm handshake as we met. Blessed, 77, was full of both life and beard as he perched on a portable generator at the maze to chat to us. “Did you know I’ve got a silent room at the University of York named after me? Imagine that, a silent room!” Brian Blessed, who is known for memorable roles in films like Flash Gordon, Star Wars and Hamlet, as well as his mountain-topping exploits as an adventurer, was at York Maze to see from above his likeness recreated (along with Geoff Boycott and Jeremy Clarkson’s) in a 1000 foot corn field. As we sat and waited for his helicopter to arrive, Brian spoke about his Yorkshire roots.

“I welcome any opportunity to be back in Yorkshire. I was born in Mexborough, you know? My father was a coal miner. He was a highly intelligent man and also played cricket for Yorkshire. Quite a heroic figure. Yorkshire was full of great sporting people in those days, the war years.”

A wild ride Trying to ask Brian Blessed a question is a tricky business, as he continues speaking, seemingly at random. “I don’t know many actors,” he says, “and I don’t have many actor friends. Most of the people I know are explorers. But the one actor I do know is Kenneth Branagh, who lives five minutes away from me. We go for

long walks together. But anyway, he was being interviewed the other day and the reporter asked him about our friendship. And Ken says, “Brian Blessed is the quietest man I know.”” At which point a helicopter came to land in the field next to us. Brian leant over and shouted into the recording device, “That’s a helicopter you can hear! It’s going to take me up into the sky so I can see my face in a maze!”

face off As the sound of the rotors die down, we get a chance to squeeze in a question. We ask if he thought they were joking when they said his face was being made into a maze. Brian barks a laugh. “To hear that was surreal and wonderful and comical. When I look at pictures of it I think I look like the green giant of the fields and forests… quite sensational! The whole project is larger than life. It’s earthy and filled with Yorkshire spirit. So people can come here and

dance around Brian Blessed’s face. It’s gigantic and will bring some great happiness.” Jumping back into the past, Brian says, “I was a secondary school boy and I got a scholarship to go to drama school, which was unheard of in those days. I owe Yorkshire a great debt of gratitude for teaching me theatre. So I’m always very happy to come back here to say thank you. I’m very Yorkshire and bullish… “I don’t think we beat the drum for Yorkshire enough,” he says. “We’re fabulous, with all our great literature and our landscapes. It’s astonishing what Yorkshire possesses. It does my heart and soul good to be here.” A wave comes from the pilot. “Ha! Right I have to go and get in a helicopter now. Thank you my dear!” And off he barrels to take flight. We’re pretty certain he doesn’t need the helicopter.

Massive savings throughout our range.

The ups and downs of life as seen by our very own (very) grumpy, (almost) old woman

My daughter tried to show me the wonders of Powerpoint on my computer the other day. It didn’t go well. Not as badly as the day she taught me Photoshop, which literally ended in tears, but bad enough. ‘I just don’t understand why you can’t do something so simple,’ she said. Well, of course it was simple to her,

12

because she grew up with it. She made her first school project on Powerpoint at an age when I was still getting to grips with a fountain pen. But is it any wonder we get confused at times? We middle-aged people have lived through a technological revolution. I still remember being stunned by the concept of the fax machine. I still am, if I’m honest. How does that noise turn into words and pictures hundreds of miles away? My husband has tried to explain the technology behind it but I still regard a fax machine with the same amazement and disbelief that a native of the Amazon rainforest might look

at a teabag, or Sting. And then there’s the video recorder, another marvel of technology. No more racing home from work so you don’t miss a vital episode of Corrie. You could actually tape it. Until someone else accidentally taped over it, that is. No one under 21 with all their hard drives could ever understand the crushing disappointment of finding your mum’s taped Bergerac over Saturday Superstore. And as for the mobile phone... for someone who grew up getting excited about Dial A Disc and the Speaking Clock, this was truly magical. Back in the old days, I remember

being impressed that I could play Snake on my new Nokia. Come to think of it, I was impressed that I even owned a new Nokia. Now I can read emails, take photos, google facts, make lists, check my diary and watch endless videos of cats playing Jenga. Thanks to a fancy new app, I can even set the TV to record while I’m on the train (although I still refer to it as ‘videoing’, because I’m old school). Computers these days are unrecognisable. Hands up who remembers the Sinclair Spectrum? Oh, the thrill of hooking it up to your cassette recorder and portable TV, switching it on and waiting for

But then technology hurtled on and along came the Amstrad. These were the Macbooks of their day. If Macbooks came with one glaring orange on black font and weighed about the same as a family car, that is. All right, so it only printed on a continuous roll of paper with holes down the sides. But for someone used to pecking at a typewriter with a bottle of Tippex on hand, the idea of being able to change text on a screen was little short of a miracle. And can you believe all these things have happened in the past 30 years or so? When you think about it, technology has moved so fast it’s a wonder we fiftysomethings can even keep up. So don’t mock us for our lack of knowledge. Because we are the children of the revolution, the pioneers of the brave new world you kids enjoy today. We have adapted and survived. Unlike you, we have learned patience and lived through disappointment. And we still remember what to do with a bottle of Tippex, too.

According to

it to load. And waiting. And waiting. I wonder how today’s generation would cope with staring at a blank screen for hours at a time, only to see the words ‘Tape Loading Error’ appear. Ah, those were the days.

Donna... Hot

The weather. So why are the shops so depressingly full of coats, jumpers and boots? It’s still summer, people (well, just about, anyway)! Autumn and winter last long enough, without retailers making it worse. And the ironic thing is, come February we won’t be able to move for swimsuits and sarongs.

Not

Passwords. Don’t you just hate them? You seem to need one for everything these days. You can’t use the same one, you’re not allowed to write them down and you have to change them regularly. How am I supposed to hold all these words in my head? The simple answer is – I don’t. Never mind it being for my own security – the only one who can’t get into my account is me.

Horoscopes September 2014 Starsign of the month... Virgo (24th August - 22nd September)

here are a few famous faces you share your sign with

by James Christie n For details of private readings phone 07884 107100 or 01423 339770 Email: jcp@magepublishing.co.uk

A strong month for consolidating recent gains and advantages. New work routines may have caused some self doubt and uncertainty, but you now master the situation with growing degrees of self confidence and enthusiasm. Financial gains made over the broad sweep of the summer now seem to be appreciated for what they are, and you’ll spend a fair amount of September making some long term future plans, based on current and projected cash flow. Family affairs creep up the ladder of priority from the 15th onwards and there are two specific problems you will find yourself having to deal with. One involves an older female who insists on involving herself in your affairs, and giving dictatorial advice, that is neither wanted nor appreciated. You may have quite a task keeping this female at arm’s length, but for everyone’s sake, do your best. The other problem concerns a friend in need, and inevitably you will be drawn into their affairs as Cupid, go-between, match-maker, counsellor or whatever.

(22nd November - 21st December)

(22nd December - 19th January)

Much of what was relevant in August rolls over in September, but now the emphasis definitely seems to be on emotional relationship and all romantic affairs of the heart. You’re with someone who has a lot to offer, but who demands an awful lot in return, and as the old saying goes, “if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!”

While some relationships burn themselves out, especially if they are new associations that have not been built on firm foundations, other relationships settle down into nicely glowing embers and a great deal of progress will be made in securing new foundations for your long term emotional future. So, a very important month for romantic unions!

Some tension during the first few days of the month, but this situation easing towards the end of the first week as increasingly someone comes round to your way of thinking. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they agree with you, only that they don’t want to fight with you. This is a thought worth keeping in mind before you celebrate pyric victories.

The advent of September enables you to breathe a small sigh of relief. You’re not out of the financial tunnel just yet, but things are improving, albeit slowly and degree by degree. There may be some disruption to domestic routines caused by extensive DIY schemes or tradesmen tramping through your home on some ambitious rebuilding project.

14

(20th January - 18th February) You will choose not to make a stand on a matter of pride and principle. Someone else may think they’ve got the better of you – but you know exactly what you’re doing and why, which gives you the moral advantage! Some care and attention needs to be focused on health situations.

PIscES (19th Feb - 20th March) A difficult week for fishes who insist on swimming against the tide. If you can go with the flow, there are some financial gains to be made on or around the 4th. A semi-legal situation is resolved in your favour around the 11th and there are career openings on the 13th. Medical tests and out-patient appointments on either the 10th or 20th.

aries (21st March-19th April) September is an unsettling month when you find yourself having second thoughts about a recent acquisition – could be a girl friend, a husband, or a new car. But hang on in there and give yourself a bit more time to get accustomed to something which is new, but not yet tested. Put it to the test, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

taurus (20th April - 20th May) You will feel justifiably pleased with yourself when you hit a few important targets and goals. This leads to improving finances in the

mid-term and a greater degree of respect and admiration from colleagues and family who will be impressed by your achievements. Relationships prosper throughout September with high points on the 8th and the 19th.

the best of york

aquarius

GEMINI (21st May - 20th June) “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is a well known saying, but on the other hand if it is broken and it can’t be fixed, then do not be afraid to replace it with something new. This philosophy applies to jobs, cars, cookers, crumbling walls – and in some cases, crumbling relationships. Only you can decide if something needs fixing!

CANCER (21 June - 22nd July) Where careers are concerned, as one door closes so another door opens. The 6th and the 17th seem to be important dates for all business related affairs, while the latter part of the month sees you being more concerned about emotional affairs. Cancerians embarking on new relationships should walk before they run.

LEO (23th July - 23rd August) Without wishing to be sexist, gentlemen of the sign have a far better time of things than the ladies when it comes to jobs, careers and all aspects of business. On the other hand, the ladies of the sign seem to bloom within the aura of safe emotional situations and the prospect of new additions to the family.

Your community needs you A couple of months ago we interviewed Chris Marsden, local radio personality and the driving force behind the new Vale Radio. The great news is that Vale Radio is opening up limited spots for local businesses, organisations and individuals to become 'Community Partners', allowing you to have vital and worthwhile work in the community carried out in your name.

Making a difference Vale Radio isn't just about entertainment, as Chris and the team of exBBC broadcasters aim to get out and around the Vale of York area to offer workshops as varied as computer use for older people and media broadcasting training for youngsters. There will also be tons of local information, from surgery opening times and bus schedules, to news and event listings - all tailored to the specific area the listener is in. Being a Community Partner of Vale Radio means that your business or group will be associated by the local community with a helpful, relevant and professional service which, judging by Chris's dedication and enthusiasm, will make a big difference to a lot of people's lives. The back wall of the stage was and is the stone wall of a medieval mint that occupied the hospital site in the intervening centuries. Elizabeth unfortunately died just a year after the theatre opened.

In good hands Places please... The first performance venue on the site of the Theatre Royal was built in 1744 by Elizabeth Keregan, wife of Thomas Keregan, a leading local actor who had died a few years earlier. The 'New Theatre', as it was then called, occupied the site where once the medieval hospital of St Leonard's had stood; a massive structure, part of which still exists in the theatre today

18

It wasn't until 1767 that the fortunes of the theatre really took off, in the hands of Tate Wilkinson. Wilkinson was renowned for being one of England's greatest actors and theatre managers and he established a touring circuit around Yorkshire to rival anything in the south. He also obtained the Royal patent in 1769, paying ÂŁ500 (thousands of pounds today), allowing the name to be

changed to the Theatre Royal. But theatre meant something different in those days, with audiences enjoying variety-style shows with songs, ballets and even dancing bears!

Facelift Following Wilkinson's death the theatre was managed by a slew of people who all seemed to make changes to the fabric of the building. Gas lighting was installed in the 1820s, replacing the dangerously hot tallow candles used previously, and a new frontage was built to face onto the newly created St Leonard's Place. The theatre was enlarged in this period, and as there was no seating in the stalls (then called the 'the pit'), every performance could cram in as

many as 1400 people, as compared with today's more civilised 860. The gothic facade which is so very familiar today wasn't added until 1880. The carved stone busts include Elizabeth I and characters from Shakespeare, including Hamlet and Cleopatra.

Development In an effort to compete against the growing popularity of the cinema, repertory theatre began in 1930 with ten-week programmes of shows over the summer. It was at this time that ownership of the theatre was taken over by a small group of shareholders who formed the York Citizens' Theatre Trust - the same organisation that owns the Theatre Royal today.

the best of york

In 1967 the iconic concrete cafe bar and foyer were added to the north side of the theatre, improving access to the auditorium. Everything was modernised, the dressing rooms were refurbished and the stage itself was redecorated. It was at this stage that the Victorian arcading at the front of the theatre was opened up, creating the fanciest bus shelter in Yorkshire. But that will soon change...

The future York Theatre Royal is set to close for several months in 2015. Once reopened (in time for the 2015/16 Panto - so calm down...) the way people interact with the theatre space will have been drastically altered. The aforementioned exterior arcade will

have been glassed in and knocked through to create a new box office and cafe bar, the seating of the stalls will have been raised to offer a better view, and the stage itself will have been flattened. All this will add to another chapter in one of York's most vibrant buildings. n Visit www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk

h Home sweet home

h House rules

My husband and I, both in our seventies, live in a house with a large garden. I want to downsize to a bungalow, but my husband won’t hear of it. Admittedly we’re both fit at the moment but I’m worried one day the house will be too much for us and we won’t be able to drive to the shops. How can I show him he’s being impractical? Jean

My son and his fiancée have moved in with us while they save for their own place. Until we all started living together I didn’t realise how selfish this girl is. She does nothing to support my son, and puts her own needs first. Not only that, she does nothing around the house, even when I asked for help. The friction is unbearable. My husband doesn’t want to get involved and my son currently ignores me. How can I get through the next year without causing a major upset? Claire, Haxby

It sounds as if you’ve already embraced the idea of old age, but your husband is still clinging to his lost youth. And quite right too, in my opinion. Crikey, Jean, there are people who buy a Ferrari in their seventies, and you’re worried you might not be able to handle the family Fiat. I’m sure you’re being very sensible, but it sounds as if your family home represents more to your husband than just bricks and mortar. It also holds the memory of the man he used to be. So just enjoy it while you can. I daresay he’ll see the sense in the move one day, but why get old before your time?

22

Hang on, wait – your son ignores you? He treats your house like the Haxby Hilton, and he doesn’t even have the grace to speak to you? Sorry, Claire, but it sounds as if you’ve brought your son up to be utterly selfish and thoughtless – and now he’s found his ideal match. Rather than wondering how to bite your tongue, you should be giving this self-centred pair a few home truths. For heaven’s sake, you’re only asking the girl to run round with the Dyson, not take your washing down to the Ouse and beat it clean with rocks. Keep your temper, stick to what you want and don’t let it get personal. And get your husband to back you up, too – he’s involved whether he likes it or not. Of course your son and his missus won’t like it – but it’s better to be upfront now than go berserk and strangle her with a J-cloth later.

h Truth or dare? I’ve been asked to supply a reference for a colleague. She’s very efficient at her job, but she’s also a nasty piece of work who makes life very difficult for everyone around her. We’re a close knit group and she didn’t fit in. I’m glad she’s found a new place, but I do I have to tell the truth about her? KF, Rawcliffe. Yes, you do have to tell the truth. And the truth is, she is very good at her job. End of story. If she’d embezzled the company or set fire to the CEO’s car then you might have to mention it. But she didn’t. All she did was not manage to fit in with your ‘close knit group’. And for all you know, that might have been because you’re a cliquey bunch of bitches. Just saying. In any case, just stick to the facts in your reference. If you start getting personal the only one who’ll come out of it looking bad is you.

h Baby blues My friend has asked me to be godfather to his baby son. But the other godfather is way better off than me, and I’m worried I’m not going to be able to afford to buy him expensive presents in the years to come. Should I say no? PD, Clifton Ok, I’m not a religious person, but I’m pretty sure none of the promises you’ll be taking at the baptism involve iPads or skiing holidays. I’m also sure your mate is well aware of your financial situation and didn’t ask you as a way of lining his son’s pockets in the future. Frankly, I reckon if you remembered to send a birthday card every year you’d probably be the top five per cent of godparents in this country. Your friend asked you for a reason, so just say thanks and be honoured.

FocUS ON:

Gillygate

It might not possess the night-time infamy of Micklegate, or the fame and glamour of Stonegate, but Gillygate is tucked away in a very special corner of the city; one that you’ll be hearing more about in the coming years. The history of this major street has been defined by where it isn’t; namely, inside the city walls. For many years not considered a part of the city, Gillygate (the name coming from the now-demolished St. Giles' Church) marks the site of a road that encircled the city walls, meeting up with what is now Lord Mayor's Walk. But as York inevitably spread beyond the confines of the medieval walls, streets like Gillygate became key in housing travellers and providing the city with new shops and inns... but it almost wasn't to be.

Gilly-fate

The buildings along Gillygate have always been a tightly clustered set of shops and houses. Although being outside of the city walls these days provides easy access for cars and pedestrians, during the English Civil War it was a different story. It seems that Oliver Cromwell wasn't keen to sit in quaint cafes or peruse trendy boutiques, as he ordered most of Gillygate's buildings to be destroyed by cannon fire so he could get a better shot at the walls and the Royalist's hiding behind them!

Also, as recently as the 1970s, Gillygate was threatened with total demolition after plans for the inner ring road were drawn up to plough straight through it. Fortunately this

never happened as it would've made sipping a coffee in Cafe No. 8 a dangerous affair.

Krystal’s gems //MUSIC CORNER//

This Month Krystal mostly brags about her boyfriends band but there’s an underl ying theme of hard work, commitment and not being af raid to follow your dreams .

Band: Lonely The Brave Where: Fibbers (New Venue) When: Wednesday 3rd September Song to listen out for: Trick of the Light Bio: Last year the five piece rock band from Cambridge took over the festival scene playing Leads/Reading, Download and Hard Rock Calling. This year they’ve just signed an international record deal with Columbia Records… I’d recommend getting in there and seeing them now before they take over the world. Musically think somewhere between The Courteeners and Fall Out Boy and you’re on the right lines.

You may have noticed that Your Local Link have picked up on some pretty hot musical talent over the past few months. The band I’m talking about in particular go by the name of Hello Operator. Now the reason I might have been dropping their name all over this mag like it’s a hot potato is because I am, in fact, dating the lead guitarist. Yes, I said it, the

secret’s out of the bag. He’s called Pete and he is wonderful. Now you know. Anyway I’m not here to bore you about how in love I am. I want to talk about ambitions and dreams. Pete and I are both lucky because we found our passions early on - mine’s writing, his is music. When Pete first told me that it was the musical way or no way for him, I sniggered at

him. Mostly because I thought he was being unrealistic. When we asked the boys in an interview back in May where they wanted to be in the next five years, Leeds Festival was the long term goal… Only three Months down the line Hello Operator have just finished playing at Galtres, Leeds & Reading Festival and the future has never looked so dazzlingly bright. I just

got off the phone to Pete where he’s hiding behind a wall outside a press conference having just met a shed load of interviewers and photographers from various different media outlets in what he could only describe as a surreal experience. The thing is I’m starting to feel a little ashamed of my initial negativity. Sure, the band created amazing music that got stuck in my head for days; I couldn’t go to a single gig without staring in awe. But I had a terrible preconceived idea in my head that to succeed you had to know someone or catch a lucky break or enter the X-Factor. Never once did I think you could break into the music industry out of sheer talent

and hard work. So to Max, Eddy, Robin and Pete I am so proud of you all, and thank you for proving me wrong, you’re turning me into the dreamer and doer I always wanted to be.

If you’d like to see Hello Operator play and are wondering what on earth you will wear - Check out the Fashion Focus piece in the Health & Beauty section. We’ve already got it covered for you! Hello Operators EP Blood Stained Bill is out now and available to download from iTunes.

[Binoculars] York is well served by

the railways, being a hub of both passenger and cargo trains. But no matter where you place yourself at the railway station the chances are you’ll need a bit of help to spot those all important registry numbers on the side of a train. A decent pair of binoculars will see you right, with some sets being equipped with night vision! Imagine that, not even the fall of darkness can stop you now.

[Flask]

You may never be more than 50 paces from a Starbucks or Costa while in York, but what about those exciting excursions out onto the moors to spot steam engines? A good quality flask will keep essential tea and coffee warm for hours as you huddle up on a rail bridge in the middle of nowhere. And also, thanks to science, it will keep your iced tea cold in summer. Double win.

[Camera] Used more by rail enthusiasts and

photographers than die-hard trainspotters, but a pocket camera by your side is a great way to record what choo-choos you spot. Also, if you’re out with a bunch of like-minded friends for the day, a camera will be a great way to capture your shenanigans and embarrass people on Facebook. “This is when Colin thought a D99 was a D90. Look at his face!”

[Confidence]

Not something you have to allocate pocket space too, but essential none the less. There are those who may label you as a geek or a nerd, but to those people we say pah! Remember, trainspotting is your hobby, not theirs, and naysayers are just jealous of you. If you want to be surrounded by like-minded people then get down to the National Railway Museum (we’ll assume you know where it is) to witness the exhibition dedicated to railway heroes like you.

Sport report with DAN TAIT

Common people Two years on from the majestic London Olympic Games that are said to have inspired a generation, we have just had the smaller version with the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Although not on the same grand scale of London 2012, the games still produced some moments of brilliance and had people glued to the coverage. That was despite Usain Bolt rather comically being accused of saying that the games were a bit “s**t”. Show some respect Usain; when in Scotland you should always pronounce it with an ‘e’ on the end... He wasn’t the only one on a bit of a downer during the games. Greg Rutherford, Olympic Gold medallist from 2012 (and the only one I haven’t seen do an

30

advert since) complained that the athletes' village was too noisy, and tweeted it was “great until the ignorant athletes made more noise than a herd of elephants startled in a china shop.” Is it just me who didn’t realise that bulls had been taken out of these shops? Which idiot is putting elephants in their place? I have to confess I missed the closing ceremony but enjoyed reading the tweets later on. One bloke said: “I'm not saying this is bad, but I accidentally recorded an episode of Doc Martin once and I'm contemplating watching it.” Another guy mentioned: “Costume change for Kylie; next time, she’s coming on dressed as a deep-fried Mars Bar, just to stick it to Lady Gaga.”

The beautiful game Football now, and is anyone else uncomfortable with Luis Suarez appealing his ban for biting? I think I would be happier to let my wife go on a date with Jamie O’Hara. I just don’t understand what basis he is appealing on. It’s not like he bit someone in the corridor at Lord’s cricket ground and thus there is no sufficient evidence; there were teeth marks! Maybe he thought it was acceptable because he had watched the box set of Hannibal before the game? Not that football has a particularly good record when it comes to a moral compass; next we will be having Ryan Giggs as man of the year. In September, York City have only two home fixtures with old rivals Luton Town coming to the Crescent on Tuesday 16th before Southend United arrive on Saturday 20th. One thing that is certainly missing this season is the presence of club historian David Batters, who sadly passed away this summer. I was privileged to have known Dave for the past 14 years, and he was a regular reader of this column. Raised in Huntington but living in Haxby for the last 50 years, Dave was York, and more

importantly York City, through and through. His passion and knowledge for the football club was second to none, but he was also a real gentleman and Bootham Crescent is not the same without him.

Whilst Dave would have loved nothing more than York City to gain promotion, their rugby counterparts might just do that this season with only London Skolars to play (Sunday 7th September). At the time of writing they have won a record eight consecutive matches and lead Oldham by only six points (Oldham have one game in hand) in a dramatic end of season battle. Hopefully by my next column they will be securely placed for next season’s Championship.

Local sports news It was 1981 when York City’s manager Nigel Worthington first started playing in the English Football League when he was on the books at Notts County, but as he tells Your Local Link in an exclusive interview, the buzz of the new season is the same every campaign. The former Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds player has managed in the top flight of English football with Norwich City, and led his country Northern Ireland, but speaking ahead of this new season he says it’s like the first day back to school. “I'm full of nerves and trepidation, but that’s the great

thing about football!” says Nigel. Now some 18 months into the job, Worthington spoke about the many changes he has made, such as reducing the squad from 31 to 21 to add better quality within the group. When asked about the club's aspirations for the season, he says that they are looking to try pick up where they left off. “We have had a really good pre-season, the players have worked really hard and there is a good spirit in the group,” says Nigel. business JMD Associates celebrates 15 years A lot can happen in 15 years. Back in 1999, the Euro currency was established, the world was panicking about the Millennium Bug and the Scottish parliament was officially opened. And, of course, JMD Associates (UK) was launched. While the Millennium Bug turned out to be nothing, JMD has proved to be quite the opposite, with 200 Estate Planning Practitioners around the country including here in York, and a team that is still expanding today. Part of the secret to the success of the business is that it has one head office covering the whole country, plus locally-based

Estate Planners who meet customers in their own homes, meaning that the team can keep costs to a minimum while still maintaining exceptional customer service. There are hundreds of happy customers in York alone, and nationwide the company has become one of the largest and most successful independent will writers in the country. n Visit www.jmdwillwriters.com or call 0800 583 1415.

We have all the latest news from things that go vroom!

Pop to the shops in this

Red means... erm, pass?

Britain has a great legacy of growing really fast in cars, setting land speed records in 1983 (650mph) and in 1997 (763mph). Now it seem that the same team is returning, led by veteran driver Richard Noble, to smash the 1000mph mark with the new Bloodhound SSC. The supersonic car, which will be piloted by Andy Green, weighs more than seven tonnes and is hoped to break 1000mph in 2016. A replica model of the car is currently touring the UK, and at 13 metres in length is pretty hard to miss. We were wondering how they got it in a parking space?

Surely it would be an absolutely ridiculous idea to have traffic lights as decoration by a busy road, wouldn’t it? Well that’s exactly what has been done by a set of crossroads in Chongqing City, China. A metal pole has been artfully adorned with twenty sets of traffic lights which blink randomly. It has left drivers extremely confused, with one motorist saying, "When you look at one light it's red but the one next to it is green. No-one knows where or when to go because they just seem to change randomly.” The authorities responded with, “They are just for decoration because the junction looked bare. They look very pretty at night but drivers should just ignore them.” And now we're off to paint a life-sized picture of a runway next to Robin Hood Airport.

n Follow the team’s progress at www.bloodhoundssc.com

Adele of a journey Love her or hate her, we bet singer-songwriter Adele has never caused you to abandon your car while on the motorway. However, according to the Highways Agency, one dim motorist did just that while listening to one of Adele’s albums. Apparently, after seeing the words FIRE appear across his dashboard, the poor chap panicked,

36

pulled over onto the hard shoulder and jumped out of the car, fearing it was about to burst into flames. Turns out his dashboard was actually letting him know what song he was currently listening to, Adele’s ‘Set Fire to the Rain’. Good job he wasn’t listening to ‘Explode’ by the Cardigans - he might have crashed!

Car safety Tips

Planning a long car trip? Here are some tips to avoid falling asleep at the wheel. • Get a good night’s sleep before you hit the road to be alert for the drive. • Avoid driving alone for long distances. A friend who remains awake for the journey can take a turn behind the wheel and help identify if you’re getting tired. • Take a break every 100 miles or two hours. • Find a safe place to take a 15 to 20 minute nap if you think you might fall asleep. • Avoid medications that cause drowsiness. • Avoid driving at times when you would normally be asleep. • The equivalent of two cups of coffee can increase alertness for several hours, so get brewing! Bespoke interiors, surprising prices When our Sales Executive Mim was on the hunt for a new kitchen she thought she might have to sacrifice quality for cost. But, after speaking to Richard James Handmade, she found that wasn’t a worry. Whenever we're looking for a new kitchen, bedroom or home office suite and furniture, we want as little stress and hassle as possible, and we assume you're the same. That is the reason many people rush out to the giant chain stores and buy modular, "one-size-fits-all" suites that cost an arm and a leg and that don't always fit our homes - or our lifestyles - very well. That is why Richard James Handmade do things differently. Be it a bespoke kitchen, fitted perfectly to you and your home, or an individual item of furniture, everything they create is carefully made using traditional methods at the workshop in Flaxton, just north of York. But although you're getting the finest craftsmanship from Richard James Handmande, the

chances are you won't be paying the highest prices. Mim puts it best herself: "Efficiency has been key with Richard James Handmade. Owner Richard Patterson personally came to quote for my new kitchen the same day I enquired, and I had my plans the next. He even advised me on different layouts which would allow for more cupboard space. He gave great customer service which assured me the work was being done to the highest quality. Oh, and his quote was more than £1500 cheaper than a non-bespoke kitchen from B&Q!" They don't use middlemen at Richard James Handmade. From your first call, right the way through to having your furniture fitted, you’ll deal

with company owner Richard, who apart from Mim saying is a lovely chap, has 25 years of experience producing handmade furniture right around the globe. Richard will ensure that the highest level of quality and care is taken throughout. Mim was surprised just how much she saved by opting for the personally designed, bespoke kitchen. So if you are looking for a kitchen, bedroom or office suite that is built around you and your needs, visit www.richardjameshandmade.co.uk

Sleepy sanctuary

For most of us, our bedroom is a haven; the space that's reserved just for us to enjoy some relaxation after a busy day. The trouble is, the décor doesn't always match up. Luckily, father and son team Steve and Jodie Calladene are here to offer a comprehensive fitting and redecoration service so that you can get the bedroom of your dreams. The pair allow you to browse their extensive range of modern and traditional styles in the comfort of your own home, then create a computer generated design for your particular space and leave you to decide in your own time. And because Steve and Jodie are able to offer a truly comprehensive service – that means redecoration, plastering, and even electrics – there's no need to wait for other tradespeople, so the job can get done much more quickly. What's more, as the duo have no showroom there are no big overheads, so they can pass the savings onto their customer – that's you. n Email calladenes@hotmail.co.uk or call 01653 697620.

The Raw Ingredients fittings, door and window openings etc. A tape measure and graph paper are sufficient to begin with but if you have money to spare you could purchase a laser measuring device (or DISTO) for increased accuracy. If you live in an old house like me, don’t be surprised to find that your dimensions don’t quite add up – the walls may not all be straight! You could translate your findings into a set of working drawings: plans, sections, and elevations to create a useful reference for future work and any conversations with contractors you may use. There are plenty of online tools and apps to help you do this including Google Sketchup, Autodesk Homestyler, Magic Plan, and Floorplanner.com. Last month I began my mini-series on the process of design. We started by establishing a clear brief with you as the client. You’ve asked yourself some searching questions about your needs and the purpose of the project; now it is time to look at the “raw ingredients” of your space. By gathering information you can assess objectively what qualities and limitations your room has, and capitalise on the good bits whilst keeping your expectations realistic. Begin by taking photos of the room in question to

help you see the room objectively and perhaps even draw your attention to features you didn’t know were there. Don’t limit your angle to eye level: make sure you take in the ceiling and floor too. Once you have done that, begin by looking at the following elements: Shape & Proportions: Take some detailed dimensions of the room, not forgetting ceiling heights, positions of sockets, light

Structure: How is your house constructed? Is it brick / stone / timber? Think in 3D and consider your floors, walls and ceilings. Is your floor sound and level? Are your internal walls timber stud or brick-built? Do you have any issues with plaster or rising damp? Is the plaster smooth enough to paint or will it need papering? Are your openings (doors & windows) in the right place for what you want to achieve? What condition are your ceilings in? By looking at these elements in detail you should avoid surprises in the future.

Grander Designs This month we hear from Kate MacNeil from M.A.C. Architects, as she offers us her professional insights into loft conversions. Loft and attic conversions are one of the cheapest, easiest and most efficient methods of renovating your house. They can create much needed additional living space, such as an additional living room, play room, home office, bedroom and even an en-suite bathroom. These dusty unused areas of the home can be quickly transformed into light and airy living spaces while also increasing the value of your home. If you are planning to convert your loft space it is essential to get the correct designs at the beginning of the project. I would suggest you have an initial design consultation with an architect, who will help you explore all possibilities for the design and layout of your loft conversion as well as advising you on whether planning

permission will be required. Arrested development Planning consent may or may not be required when converting your loft or attic into another room. Thankfully because of the new Permitted Development Rights a large number of attic conversions can be undertaken without planning permission. However, building regulations will be required. Generally loft conversions are cheaper than building a full extension - however this does depend on the size, shape and layout of the house and the type of roof you have. The primary considerations for a loft conversion need to focus on how the space will connect with the rest of the house, maximising daylight, and ensuring that the design will maximise

value for money. Consideration of the balance and use of the new space is also important, so that the project doesn’t end up as a compromise, but becomes an integral part of the home. Breath easy Natural daylight and natural ventilation is essential to create comfortable living accommodation and, speaking more practically, the layout must consider available headroom and the position of a new staircase. Often dormer windows will be required to provide additional headroom to attic spaces, as they project vertically from the plane of the sloping roof.

which turns a roof light into an instant balcony, making the most of the roof space without compromising on the size of living space. Whatever you’d like to do with all that wasted space above you head, be sure to plan every inch of the project and seek the professional advice of an architect – it’ll save you money further down the line. n Kate McNeill is an RIBA Architect, Director at M.A.C. We get the low-down from electrical expert Matt Todd of Herbert Todd & Son, about the perils of buying large electrical appliances on-line.

Painting Decorating & Property Maintenance

With websites like Amazon ever expanding their product range to include larger and larger items like washing machines and dish washers, I thought it might be useful to highlight a few problems that we’ve heard about from our customers who have bought from big, solely on-line, companies. Although large electrical items might be sold as having free delivery, it’s always worth remembering that this might mean the delivery driver has been told to drop off the item on the curbside by your house and, for insurance reasons, isn’t permitted to help you get it inside - no matter how heavy it is. There’s often no installation service either, and those that do offer it charge between £30-50 per item. All our products, no matter their size, are delivered free of charge by helpful guys who will even take your old appliance away for you. We believe that buying new household electrical goods should be as easy as possible, and physically getting the item into your home and set up shouldn’t have to be your concern. And, if you ever have a problem, all you have to do is pick up the phone and call us - none of this silly emailing automated assistants rubbish! n Visit www.htodd.co.uk and call 628676.

Be it from candles, oil lanterns or open flames, nothing brings light and warmth to a garden at night better than good old fire. A few large candles massed together in the centre of a table makes for great outside dinning, while tea light holders dotted about will add depth, highlight paths, and draw attention to specific areas.

If you want to enjoy all that hard work you put into your garden during the summer right the way through to next spring, then perhaps opt for something more permanent. Fixed lights do away with the need to ‘set-up’ the garden whenever you want to be in it at night and can also act as a deterrent to would-be burglars.

We love this Foras Mira Outdoor Burner from John Lewis. In brushed stainless steel, and utilising oil to create a bright flame, a couple of these will soon brighten up those dark nights.

This gorgeous weatherproof option from Barnitts is zinc plated, elegantly curved and can also be fitted with a motion detector.

Solar powered lights can be dotted about your garden and left to charge up during the sunny hours. Then, once the sun goes down, they spring to life. This simple solar light is not only great at lighting paths, lawns and flower beds, it is also pretty friendly to your bank account as well. Ask Chris...

Got a gardening question?

Chris Brown from Brown’s Nurseries can help

Q.

Q.

Could you please give me some advice on pruning clematis, as I am confused by the different types of clematis there are. There are three different types of clematis. Some flower well if pruned lightly or not at all, while others bloom more effectively when cut back hard, each with different pruning requirements. Group One Clematis, including C. Montana and C. Armandii, are vigorous plants that flower in late spring on the previous year’s growth. Group Two Clematis, such as C. Corona and C. Henryi, flower in early summer, also on the previous year’s growth. Group Three Clematis include the small-flowered Viticella and Texensis types such as C. Gravetye Beauty and some large-flowered types including C. Perle D’azur and C. Jackmanii. Pruning Group One: Plants in this group need little or no pruning once established, except to remove dead or damaged stems, or to keep them in check. After flowering give them a light trim if necessary. Prune the leggy new season’s growth, cutting above a pair of healthy buds - but do not cut back hard. Pruning Group Two: Prune this group in early spring when the buds are in growth and are

What are perennials and what do you think they would bring to my garden?

clearly visible. Work from the top of the clematis, pruning each stem back to the first pair of healthy buds or shoots. Remove dead, diseased or damaged wood; it will be brown and dry. The pruned stems will produce new growth and then flowers in early summer. Pruning Group Three: Left unpruned, these clematis form flowers at the top of the plant, leaving bare, straggly stems at the bottom. In late winter, before the buds break, remove the tangle of shoots from their support and cut back all the stems hard to within 30 cm off the ground. This encourages strong new shoots and flowers to form along their length.

Perennials are one of the largest plant groups, offering seasonal colour, fragrance, form and texture. With a wealth of plants to suit every size and style of garden, they are traditionally grown in herbaceous borders using a wall or hedge as a backdrop. But since most gardens are not large enough for long borders solely devoted to perennials, they are grown in mixed borders together with shrubs, annuals, biennials, and bulbs that extend the season of interest. Although some perennials are evergreen, most die back in autumn and emerge again in spring. While this can leave borders bare in winter, the seed heads and dried stems of some perennials, including rudbeckias, echinops, and sedums, provide a beautiful display when others have disappeared. Perennials are non-woody plants that live for two or more years and, when mature, produce flowers annually. The term often includes grasses and ferns and most garden centres and nurseries stock a large selection of perennials, so ask for good advice when choosing your plants.

Make nature welcome!

We're all for supporting great local causes, especially when they help the environment and inspire us to create new things. That's why we're rather excited about visiting the RSPB York's specially designed garden at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show from 12th-14th September! Their eco-friendly garden design has been created especially to give local wildlife a loving home, and includes a mini pond that's been made out of a recycled hand held grain hopper from the time when seeds were sown by hand; and the garden furniture and some plants have been lent by members of the group. The garden shows off loads of different ways that you can help your local wildlife – and even a few that will feed the gardener! So, if you'd like some ideas on building a home for wildlife in your back yard, head along. n For details on the show, visit www.flowershow.org.uk and to find out more about RSPB York, visit www.rspb.org.uk

Birds of a feather... They've been rather busy bees over at the RSPB. Not only have they designed a rather marvellous wildlife-friendly garden, but they've also organised an illustrated talk entitled 'Island of Birds (Skomer, Wales)' that will take place at Temple Hall at York St. John University on 9th September from 7.30pm. John Lintin Smith will lead the event, which welcomes both members and non-members alike. n Visit www.yorkrspb.org.uk

spring flowering bulbs whole basket under ground, then they will grow happily and you can lift the whole thing later to move them. This also gives a greater impact when planting bulbs in clumps. Fun times

After the heat of the summer months has started to cool and the long lazy evenings are becoming shorter (some of the extremely organised amongst us may even be planning Christmas shopping), the last thing on anybody’s mind will be spring colour in the garden. However, now is exactly the right time to start planning your tubs, beds and borders. Bulbs can make a beautiful addition to any garden, either in an existing border or planted in strategically

placed tubs. Many people don’t bother with bulbs because they think they are a nuisance and hard work, but bulbs will give years of pleasure without needing more than minimal maintenance. Some bulbs may need lifting seasonally, or you may just prefer to not have them in the garden whilst they are dying down. Plant a number of bulbs into an aquatic basket (which has slits all around the sides and the bottom) and plunge the

Bulbs are also fun for children to grow, with some giving quite quick results. For example Colchicum can be grown without compost. Simply place your bulb on a saucer on the windowsill and watch it grow and flower. An old favourite for children is the Hyacinth which again doesn’t need compost. Fill the bottom of a hyacinth glass with water and place the bulb in the top. As it grows the roots will come out and find the water. Crocus are another bulb with quick results, and three varieties will flower in autumn; Crocus Kotschyanus Zonatus, Crocus Sativus and Crocus Speciosus.

The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down. Seasons greetings It’s not just your garden you could be planning; bulbs are a great gift idea for friends and family. They come ready wrapped in boxes or bags so you don’t even have to do that. Amaryllis bulbs make good Christmas gifts and can last for years. A popular present to give at Christmas is a planted bowl of Hyacinths. Narcissus can also be in flower before Christmas, but it isn’t just a case of planting them very early, as you have to make sure that you have purchased the correct bulbs. There are varieties that have been specially ‘prepared’ for early indoor flowering. Hyacinth ‘Pink Pearl’ and Hyacinth ‘Delft Blue’ are well known, and Narcissus ‘Paperwhite’ are also prepared for early flowering.

Pop down to your local garden centre today and take a look at the amazing range that could be flowering in your garden next spring.

GROW YOUR OWN with Debbie Pendle from Brunswick Organic Nursery

Ask debs @ brunswick nursery Sprouts, kale, parsnips, leeks and swede all have a long harvest period and stand well in winter. As a novice gardener your efforts may be best rewarded with reliable crops such as potatoes, beetroot, leeks, courgettes and beans.

Q.

I have just been allocated an allotment and I am trying to plan what crops to grow and where to grow them. Please could you give me some tips and advice? A. Start by making a list of all the vegetables you would like to grow. It makes sense to base this on what you like to eat, but there are other things you should also consider like how much space there is and the type of soil you have. Be realistic about how much time is available for maintenance and harvesting. Growing crops that can be harvested at different times of year spread the workload;

Rotating crops every year breaks the cycle of soil born diseases and allows equal soil treatments over a given period of time. Plan your crop rotation by dividing the growing space up into four plots of equal size. From your list, group the vegetables together in families and allocate each group to a plot; 1) Peas & Beans 2) Potato & Carrot 3) Onions 4) Cabbages (any extras like salads, annual herbs or spinach can be grown where there is spare ground). Improve the soil by digging it over and adding compost or farm yard manure, which will get you off to a good start next spring. Keep records of what you planted in each plot, soil preparations undertaken and your successes and failures as you find it useful to refer back to in years to come. I often read that a crop requires well drained but moisture retentive soil. What does this mean and how do I achieve it? A. Vegetables consist of 90% water and require a constant supply if they are to grow well. The soil acts as a reservoir and the water holding capacity of soil depends on the type of soil you have. When you water your plants a large percentage will either run of the surface for drain through the soil. Once drainage has taken place, moisture is held in films around the soil particles and the pore space in between is replaced with air. It is at this stage that water becomes available for the plant to use. Heavier clay soils can quickly become waterlogged and are slow to drain due to their small particle size so water becomes unavailable to the plant. The larger particles in sandy soils allow water to be more easily extracted, but their free draining nature makes them dry out much quicker. What we would all like is a loam soil, which consists of different sized soil particles creating a variety of pore sizes allowing both good drainage and water retention. But we have to work with the soil we have! Regular additions of bulky organic matter such as farmyard manure, leaf mould or compost creates an open soil structure which improves the drainage of clay soils by allowing in more air. In sandy soils the organic matter particles act as a sponge and hold onto water which can then be taken up by the plants. As the organic matter decomposes it has the added benefit of providing a slow release fertiliser.

The

botanist

We might have recently celebrated 45 years since first landing on the Moon, but one Japanese artist has been conducting his own space mission; one with a more floral feel than Apollo 11. Tokyo’s Azuma Makato travelled to the Nevada desert to launch a bouquet of flowers and a 50 year old bonsai tree into the upper atmosphere by way of helium-filled balloons. Reaching incredible heights of 28,000 metres and captured by the balloons’ onboard cameras, Makato said of the mission, “I wanted to see the movement and beauty of plants and flowers suspended in space.” Fair enough. And just so you can sleep tonight, both the bouquet and bonsai were safety returned to earth via a parachute.

Popular with gardeners across the country, the humble buddleia (Buddleja davidii) is increasingly becoming a nuisance, especially on the railways. Although it sprouts gorgeous little flowers, often lilac, blue or white, buddleia is now classed as an invasive species by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Apparently the plant, which originally came from China, is thriving in derelict urban areas and along train tracks, growing inside walls, crumbling brickwork and damaging overhead wires. DEFRA's advice to gardeners? Remove the plant's seed heads after flowering to limit the spread.

The return of liquorice

A nostalgic sweet treat, and one synonymous with Yorkshire town Pontefract, liquorice could soon be returning to our green and fertile lands for the first time in a century. Pontefract farmer Rob Copley has started growing the plant, the roots of which are used to make the traditional black and stamped Pontefract Cakes, and hopes that others will do the same. Currently all of the UK’s liquorice is imported from places like Turkey, even though it is a relatively easy plant to cultivate. We wish Rob the very best of luck and look forward to one day soon feasting on ‘proper’ Yorkshire liquorice.

Gotaproblem withyourpet? Tracey Pulleyn of Minster Vets answers your pet questions Upon choosing a puppy I always recommend you to take a few towels to the puppy’s home and rub them on the puppy’s parents. Doing this will cover the towels with the scent of the parents and puppies so bringing the towels home before the puppy arrives will allow your dogs to smell the new arrival and accept it more. You will also smell of the puppies from your visits. The more regularly they smell this the more likely they are to accept it as a regular scent.

Q.

I’m thinking of getting a new puppy. What is the best way to introduce it to my two older dogs?

The padding of tiny paws in the house can cause great excitement, however it can also cause terrible heartache. Your two adult dogs will have been your focus of attention for a while now and they will take some adjusting to you diverting some of your time to a new face.

When bringing the puppy home it is a good idea to allow your dogs to meet a new face outside rather than in your home, so a meet and greet in the garden may work well. However, do remember that if your puppy is not vaccinated then it is not recommended to put them down on public areas where other dogs venture as this could lead to spread of disease.

Perfect Ponds

Conrad from Bradshaws Direct offers tips and advice on how to look after your pond and fish.

Woof & Blow Groomers

Pretty soon the summer will be over and the pond keeper’s thoughts should turn to the season to come. Autumn is still a time to enjoy your pond but there are a few things you should do to make sure that it is in good shape for the winter and for next year. When the leaves start to fall they can get into your pond and sink to the bottom. There they will turn into a layer of brown, smelly sludge that can look unpleasant but will also serve to add to the algae problems you’ll face next spring and summer. The best solution is to make sure that the leaves don’t even get into your pond. If you have a raised pond then you should be safe but look out for overhanging trees and cut those back. For the rest of us a net that covers the pond is the easiest way to stop them. Put your net out early enough to catch them all and keep checking it because the centre can often droop into the water and leaves will gather there, turn soggy and go through the net. If you don’t cover your pond then do your best to get the leaves out, using a net while they are still floating. If it is too late for that then the sludge and leaves can be removed with a pond vacuum before they do any damage. Take a look at your pond plants and cut off any dying leaves and stems and watch out for more as autumn passes. These, if left, will add to the sludge layer so they are better on the compost heap.

e n r u t c o N

A great thing about having my own column is looking back to see what changes have occurred with my family. Obviously with two young children these changes come thick and fast, and it was only a few months ago that I wrote about how my daughter had entered the ‘threenager’ stage, a time of... well, hell. However, as the year ticks on I’m happy to report that she is possibly leaving that crazy, loud and downright scary developmental phase, evidenced by her bedtime routine.

we watch films, she asks me questions about what is inside her head... sometimes all the way into the wee hours of the night, sometimes only until half past seven.

Until recently we had to put our daughter to bed, meaning we would be in bed with her, singing, cuddling and basically calming her down until slumber took hold. This was often quite difficult and sometimes the process would last for hours. But now we’ve taken a new tack; she sleeps when she’s tired.

By doing this we’ve taken a lot of the pressure out of the evening and eliminated the question of will she/won’t she sleep. Now she sleeps when she wants to sleep, and I’ve already recognised a more natural pattern develop in which our daughter is happier and less frustrated during the day. After all, nobody is forcing her to do anything and she is being allowed to choose when to go to sleep and what to do prior to that. Like a grown up.

Night owls The notion of our daughter, who is now pushing four, having a bedtime has gone out of the window, and as my wife gently gets our 17 month old son off to snoozeland (an altogether simpler task), me and the girlie just hang out. We read books,

62

“She sleeps when she’s tired.”

Freedom! The more we parent, the more we realise that freedom is the key to happiness. Set-in-stone structures and rigid ideas like a bedtime aren’t

always going to be the most effective way forward because children are inherently chaotic and silly and random. Fighting against that is like trying to hold back the tide and will only lead to resentment and the child feeling like they are being controlled. Nobody likes that. And, with so much more time spent together, it’s been great to hear more classic one-liners from her. After I revealed that there was in fact a brain in her head, she proceeded to pick her nose, show me what she had excavated, and say: “Yes, this is brain. I do thinking with it. You take it.” Ah, special moments...

...and another thing

Come and join

the fun…

Buy an umbrella As you might have already read about in this month’s Time Travel article, I spent a bit of time at the York Theatre Royal and learnt about all the forthcoming changes to the building. The most striking will obviously be the glazing-up of the stone arcades on St Leonard’s Place, creating a gorgeous and roomy box office and cafe. But what about the bus users? For years people waiting for their bus outside the theatre have sheltered from the rain under those vaulted arcades, but come Christmas 2015 you’ll have to press your face up to the glass to hide from a downpour. My advice? Go in and order a coffee - who wants to ride a bus anyway?

Pirate talk September 19th is, of course, International Talk Like a Pirate Day, in which the whole world (seriously, all seven billion of us) adopt a piratical accent and garb. Having done this for the past few years, I was hoping to mix things up a little this month by playing fast and loose with the term ‘pirate’. On the 19th I shall dress normally, speak as I always do, but clip a name-tag to my lapel that states: ‘Just illegally downloaded the new One Direction album.’ Obviously I wouldn’t have, and not just because it’s illegal.

It’s cheesy, but it’s true – children really are the future. That’s why it’s vitally important that we all help the current generation of youngsters to grow into the best adults they can be. And whether it’s starting a youth club or even taking a child under your wing through fostering or adoption, there are lots of ways you can help here in York.

Become a foster carer In the UK, over 62,000 children live with 52,500 foster families. how rewarding it can be emotionally. There is also the opportunity to develop your skills and earn more as a Foster Carer through training. Foster Carers can earn up to £25,000 per year before paying tax.. There are many different types of fostering, including short and long term, part time, respite, mother and baby placements, and specialist fostering.

The Fostering Network have helpfully cleared up a few things...

3 There is no legal minimum age to become a foster carer.

3 Single people can foster as well as married or cohabiting couples.

3 Foster carers do not need to own their own home.

3 There is also no official upper age limit on being a foster carer.

3 There are many gay and lesbian foster carers.

3 People don’t have to be parents to foster.

Sarah Burt Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors

Changes to Child Maintenance How will it affect you?

As of the 30th June 2014 the Child Support Agency (CSA) was replaced by the Child Maintenance Service (CMS) and parents can no longer apply to the CSA to calculate what maintenance they should pay or receive. The CSA have already begun closing cases from the 30th June and 6 months notice will be provided. In the event that you are currently receiving payments through the CSA, your payments will not be affected for at least a year or two. Any cases that are not receiving maintenance payments will be closed from January 2015. After all of these cases have been closed they will begin to work on cases that are already in receipt of payments. It is unlikely that the changes will affect you before 2016 if you are already in receipt of or are paying maintenance through the CSA. The CSA predict it will be 2018 before all cases are closed completely and transferred to the CMS. Any new applications will have to be made through the Child Maintenance Service.

How will the changes affect the payments I make or receive? To use the Child Maintenance Service, there is a fee payable of £20. The CMS will then check the income of the parent not making the application through Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). A written breakdown of the calculation and schedule of payments will then be provided to you and, in addition, information and guidance will be provided to you to arrange the payments directly between you and the other party. In addition to this service, every year the CMS will review the other parents’ income through HMRC and advise on any adjustments necessary. It is possible to instruct the CSM to collect the payments for you but additional charges will be applied. The paying parent will have to pay 20% of the maintenance amount on top of the payments, and the person in receipt of the payments will receive 4% less. This is to encourage parents to discuss and arrange payments directly between them.

Any parent that refuses to make payments resulting in it becoming necessary to go to court, will have additional charges applied on top of the maintenance arrears payable. This is aimed at hopefully deterring people from trying to avoid making payments. Why is the system changing? The old CSA was not fit for purpose and they spent £503 million in one year to transfer £1.1 billion in maintenance. The new system will encourage parents to discuss matters between themselves amicably and collect and make the payments between themselves. Jilly, one of the experienced cleaners at Bluebird Care.

Put down the Marigolds* The team at Bluebird Care understand that everyone's care needs are different, which is why they are expanding to offer new services – and help even more of us to stay in our own homes. As well as practical care, the team now also offer personalised, quality domestic cleaning. The new members are highly trained, consistent, and trusted, and have been security checked. Cleaning services include ironing, vacumming, dusting, and even shopping and pet care, and can be tailored entirely to your needs – you can choose to have as little as one hour's worth of cleaning, if that's all you require. Nicola Walden, Director of Bluebird Care, says it's all down to popular demand. “Many of our customers were requesting domestic work, and feedback has been positive,” says Nicola. “Our customers particularly like that they have the same person at regular times each week.” n Call 691992. *Other rubber glove brands are available.

Coming up.... Health and beauty

Hair and Beauty Q&A Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor talks about Lipomed

And stretch... When you're 80 years old, do you want to be able to reach the tin of beans on the bottom shelf? We're speaking theoretically, of course – by the time you reach 80, we'll probably have miniature hovercraft robots that can fetch tins for us (and you might not even like beans). However, ensuring that we're fit and happy well into our golden years is something that most of us desire, robots or no robots. Being healthy, both physically and mentally, will enable us to do more of the things we love and make the most of our retirement. And believe it or not, it's not just the gym bunnies who can keep their bodies in top form.

70

Research suggests that yoga can offer both physical and mental wellbeing, enabling us to feel relaxed and contented, calm, fit, flexible and strong. It can help to reduce stress, as well as develop strong bones and muscle tone, as well as stamina and balance, and even maintain our memory - in fact, it seems to be an all round 'fix-all'. And because it's fun, inexpensive, and can be done in a group or alone, yoga is something that we can all commit to. It's never too early or too late to start your journey with yoga. Whether you're a business executive who needs a way to de-stress and

P78

improve your mood, or a retiree who wants to maintain your sharp focus, yoga can be picked up at any point in your life. Of course, the earlier you start, the more rewards you'll reap. That's where the team at York Yoga Studio come in. Whether you've practised before or you're a complete beginner, the instructors will welcome you warmly to the

Nowadays, one of the biggest plus points about visiting Kuki is the fact that there's such a large car park on site – and no need to get stressed wading through the crowds after you've just treated yourself to a relaxing pampering session! However, of course, back when the Sessions family lived at the property, the grounds looked a little different. Just outside the patio doors to the rear of the building, there once stood a grass tennis court, a lawn and a rockery; and on the York side of the house, there used to be an apple orchard. The north side was once home to a large vegetable garden, and animals such as

chickens, ducks, geese and even pigs used to live out here. The family evidently loved the grounds as much as the space indoors, as we can see in the photo of what looks to be a marvellous party! There are also a few bits of graffiti that can still be seen on the exterior walls. On each corner of the house, there is a date in the bricks; these dates signify the birthdays of the Sessions family. n Visit www.kukispa.com or call 659007. series Look out for the next in the e! in our October issu

Thank you, St Leonard's

When we've been offered care and support during a tough time, we naturally want to thank the people who've been there for us. That's why Rhys Moore from Ernie Jeffrey and Rhys Plastering asked us to include another special mention for the incredible staff at St Leonard's Hospice, who looked after his mum so well two years ago. As it would have been his mum's birthday this month, Rhys called up to ask if we could again publicly mark the occasion by thanking the staff, as he did in last year's September issue. “The staff really took care of the whole family – I couldn't fault them at all,” says Rhys. Rhys adds that the peaceful atmosphere really helped. “They really took the pressure off us,” says Rhys. “They made things so much easier, and I can't thank them enough.” n See Ernie Jeffrey & Rhys Plastering's advert above.

Blighted by back pain, Your Local Link Editor Gini sought a more gentle approach to her treatment. She found it at Gentle Chiropractic. After a serious horse riding accident some years ago, Gini has suffered from an ongoing sciatic nerve problem that can become quite debilitating. "Because of that I've had loads of chiropractic sessions," says Gini, "and I always found them to be successful. But recently I have been put off from going after having some not so pleasant experiences with rough chiropractors." So she booked an appointment at Gentle Chiropractic on Tadcaster Road. "The name certainly helped, as a gentle session was just what I was after... and I wasn't disappointed!" Gentle Chiropractic use a mixture of muscle and skeletal work in a manner that is just what it says on the tin; gentle. They can correct joint function and alignment of the spine, pelvis and peripheral joints, therefore minimising any nerve irritation. "I felt the effects straight away, as it was much easier to walk

Hair and Beauty Q&A Introducing 3D Lipomed! The brand new medical grade version of the popular 3D Lipo treatments, offering a new and improved update of this powerful technology What is it? 3D-lipo is probably one of the most advanced machines of its type and offers a powerful new dimension in non surgical fat removal, treatment of cellulite and skin tightening for both face and body. Lipo is a procedure that helps to get rid of fat in the body. 3D Lipomed is a powerful and revolutionary new approach to liposuction which does not involve surgery. 3D Lipomed reduces body fat by destroying fat cells instead of merely breaking them up and releasing them into the body.

What is the difference between 3D liposuction and standard liposuction? Unlike traditional liposuction, the 3D procedure is entirely non-invasive. We use various strategies – including ultrasound, radio frequency and cryolipolysis – to reduce fat without ever going beneath the skin. Furthermore, where standard liposuction requires a lot of vigorous exercise to metabolise the fat cells after the procedure, the 3D treatment gives outstanding results without any exercise at all. How does it work? A full 3D liposuction treatment involves: • Cavitation (which uses ultrasonic waves to break down fat cells) Cavitation is the latest non-invasive body contouring treatment for localised fat and deep cellulite.

ASK THE EXPERT Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas!

• Cryolipolysis (which freezes fat cells without affecting other body cells) Using the unique combination of electro and cryo therapy 20-40% of the fat cells in the treated area die in a natural way and dissolve over time. • Radio frequency (which serves to tighten the skin). • Dermology (vacuum skin rolling to reduce cellulite). These treatments are available individually or as part of a larger fat-

We chat to artist Jo Walton, the creative power behind Rogues Atelier art studios. Who are you and what do you do? I'm Jo Walton and I'm an artist. My work crosses between painting, printmaking, textiles and upholstery. I created and manage Rogues Atelier art studios on Fossgate, where three other artists create their work. And from there I run print-making and upholstery workshops. How did you get started? I started upholstering in my twenties when I worked on yachts in Greece and the south of France. I later qualified in traditional and modern upholstery at Jacob Kramer College in Leeds, and then did a degree in fine art in Bradford. I founded Space 109, the community arts centre on Walmgate, and one of my main responsibilities was delivering art projects to the Walmgate children, which was great fun. That led to me meeting a lot of people, which in turn led to art commissions, including oil portraits of the council's Janet Looker and Brian Watson. I’ve also run a lot

of art workshops for York Art Gallery. I can’t wait for it to open up again. What are you currently working on? I’m currently working on a rust print on silk, using bits of an old bicycle! What inspired it? This is a commissioned piece. The person who commissioned it was inspired by my current exhibition in the Fossgate Social Café on Fossgate. Are you inspired by living in York? I chose to live in York because it’s so beautiful. My name Walton means ‘from a walled town’ so I feel I belong here. There’s a huge creative community living here, and I think we inspire each other. What advice would you give to someone wanting to do as you do? So much to say on this one! Being an artist is a lifestyle not an occupation. Stick to the plan – it takes a long time to get somewhere in the art world. My time as a community artist was very beneficial as I had to learn

YORK DENTURE LABORATORY

82

how to do many different artistic practices, and it introduced me to a lot of people. Also, be prepared to volunteer as it gets you where you want to be and you will gain great experience.

If you weren't an artist what would you be? I would have to be creative in some way or another… I would probably have gone into fabric design and dressmaking. I might still do that!

How can people find out more about you? They can take a look at my website www.whatjodidnext.com or email me at whatjodidnext@rocketmail.com Or just give me a call, on 07960 329286.

Courtly cuisine Food is inextricably linked with mood – it's no wonder the two words rhyme. Sometimes we crave a simple dish; other times, nothing less than gourmet will do. Thankfully, the folks at Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa understand this, and alongside the Ruinart Terrace and Whiskey Lounge, the hotel is home to not one, but two excellent restaurants, each offering something different. Hudson's is modelled after the railway king that it's named

In retrospect...

Fish and chip shops; they're all the same, aren't they? You queue up, order your fish supper, chuck on some salt and vinegar, then leave. If only chippies were a bit more... atmospheric. We love a good excuse to go out for a slap up meal, and luckily for us the Lord Collingwood in Upper Poppleton have got a brand new chef! Gill and Ray from the pub are happy to welcome Adam Howarth to the ranks – especially seeing as his reputation seems to precede him! Word is already spreading about how delicious his food is, and Thursday steak night is so popular that booking is essential! We can see why as well – there's a choice of two succulent steaks or a veggie option, complete with trimmings and a bottle of wine for two, for just £26. The three course Sunday lunch is also proving to be a favourite, and the team are currently putting together their autumn / winter menus. Our mouths are watering already... n Visit www.thelordcollingwood.co.uk or call 337537.
