Hello...
Can you believe we’re a whole month into 2014 already? It is a little difficult to believe in the Your Local Link office, namely because we still have some Christmas decorations hanging from our walls. To be fair, we’ve been a bit too busy to take them down. First Matt revealed that he’s hoping to join the Police Specials and was therefore working to lose some Christmas weight. He’s cutting calories and knocking back suspicious looking shakes. We’re all a little concerned for him, especially when his hunger drove him to eye up one of Gini’s cows.

Meanwhile Krystal took a couple of days off to enjoy a trip to London. Being the supportive and friendly colleagues that we are, we decided it was only fitting to wrap her car in cling film while she was away; 75 metres of it to be exact. Once finished we also gave her a new number plate. Can anyone guess which legendary recording artist Krystal really dislikes? Needless to say she was not pleased. This month the magazine is bursting at the seams with great news, features, listings and competitions. Surely nobody will be able to miss the JORVIK Viking Festival – after all, we really wouldn’t want to annoy the lads on the front cover. We also go behind the scenes at the Viking Centre AND The Grand Opera House.

This Valentine’s Day why not show that special person just how much you love them by writing them a poem? But wait, before you turn the page, assumming you can’t write something heart-felt, hold on – the Your Local Link Love Doctor is here to help.*
byanyothername… You may have heard the expression “Say it with flowers”, but flowers wilt and are pretty expensive. Words, however, are free and last forever. Although writing a romantic poem might be more difficult than popping to the petrol station for a bunch of roses, it’s sure to send your partner straight to Cloud Nine.
Look to your love
Look to the greats
For example, Designer Dave says his girlfriend reminds him of “a fine whisky: strong, smooth, and gives me a headache.” Oh Dave. Meanwhile Krystal says that the thing she loves about her boyfriend is that “he orders a Chicken Mayo sandwich from McDonalds – without the mayo!” What about you, what do you love?
William Shakespeare might’ve compared his love to a summer’s day (in the romantically entitled Sonnet 18), but what about local lad W H Auden’s Lullaby (“Lay Your Sleeping head, my love, Human on my faithless arm”)? When trying to find inspiration look pretty widely: we’ve included a few links to some great romantic poems at www.yourlocallink.co.uk
The perfect Valentine’s poem won’t just be about love itself, but more importantly about the person. Apart from funny feelings in your tummy, how does your partner make you feel? Once you know, write it down. It might sound stupid but it’ll be a start.
*We mean Howard. And to be clear, he does not have a PhD in romance.

Here is our attempt to write something romantic about the one person that we truly love: you. That’s right, this poem is just for you dear reader. They come in their millions to visit this city, But we know a person that is ten times as pretty. York might have the Minster and a beautiful castle, But our true love is far less hassle. You hold us tenderly in your hands, Flicking through our pages, making plans. We want to say thank you every month, For scooping us from the doormat, ignoring other bumf. Many might read us, but we wanted to say, That it’s you that we truly love… okay?

The ups and downs of life as seen by our very own (very) grumpy, (almost) old woman
Murder on the
dance floor
I love dancing. When I say I love it, I mean I love sitting on the sofa on a Saturday night in the run-up to Christmas, glass of wine in one hand and Kettle Chips in the other, criticising the acts on Strictly. ‘He’s lost his frame!’ My husband and I will say knowledgably to each other. ‘Her legs aren’t straight enough for Latin…he’s not got the Paso shaping…’ And so we go on, even though we have no idea what we’re talking about, and wouldn’t know a Reverse Fleckerl if we fell over one.
But recently we decided to give dancing a try for real. We thought it might be nice to find a hobby we could do together, and apparently shopping in Sainsbury’s doesn’t count. At first we signed up for salsa. I can’t say I was keen – it took two gins before I was ready to
face the music, as it were.
It wasn’t a success, mainly due to my inability to tell my left from my right in times of stress (which may also be the reason I’ve never learnt to drive). While everyone else seemed to be finding their inner Ola Jordan, I was ricocheting off strangers like a human pinball. My husband wasn’t doing much better. In the end we were hustled off into a corner where we could receive ‘in-depth tuition’ – ie, where we couldn’t do any more damage. I decided there and then that no amount of gin was ever going to get me back to that class. Not surprisingly, it took us a while to venture back on to the dance floor. I might never have gone back, if I hadn’t spotted a special offer for Ceroc classes. I’d never heard of Ceroc before, but it sounded like fun and the website promised
There are Ceroc classes in York every Thursday at Askham Bryan College. For more details, visit www.cerocyorkshire.com.

And do you know what? They were right. Ceroc is like a cross between jive and Latin. Some of the moves the experts can do wouldn’t look out of place on Strictly, but the beginners’ moves are dead easy to master, even if you have a goldfish memory for steps. I started to have salsa flashbacks the moment I walked in, thinking everyone would be experts and I would end up tripping over my own feet again. But everyone was so friendly and especially kind to beginners. No one laughed at our clumsy footwork, no one got cross when we forgot the steps, and no one bundled us off to the corner so we wouldn’t get in the ‘real’ dancers’ way. By the end of the 45 minute class we felt like real dancers ourselves. By the second week, I didn’t even need the gin. I still don’t know my left from my right, but thanks to Ceroc, I can manage more than an embarrassed shuffle on the dance floor. Just don’t ask me to attempt a Reverse Fleckerl…
According to

that by the end of the first lesson we would be able to dance through a whole song. Which is frankly more than I’ve ever managed in my life.

After the York area Freemasons recently donated more than £28,000 to local charities, we take a look at the organisation about which many people still know so very little.
The Freemasons is one of the world’s oldest charitable organisations and has more than 250,000 members in England and Wales alone. The tradition of masonic lodges grew out of medieval times when stone masons would group together to protect themselves and ensure high professional standards were maintained. These days you don’t need to be a master stone carver to join one of the many ‘Lodges’ within the organisation, 11 of which presented cheques totalling £28,737 to local charities. The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Jullie Gunell, and the Provincial Grand Master Jeffrey Gillyon were guests of honour at the charity dinner, as were the representatives of the many charities that benefitted. One of those was the Cancer Care Centre at York Hospital.
The Sanctuary We grab five minutes with Michelle Kirkman of the Cancer Care Centre who was pleased as punch with the Mason’s donation (and who is our Distribution Manager, Jon’s, wife). “The Freemasons’ are amazing,” says Michelle, who works as Administrator at the centre is specially designed for patients and the family of those battling cancer. “The donation will really help the centre out and we are all very grateful for it. It will really help at the moment as we begin to train up more volunteers to work within the centre, especially as Bereavement Support Workers.” The centre is currently beginning a series of training courses to create a skilled group of volunteers to work with people who have lost friends and family members to cancer. “This place is a real sanctuary for many

people,” explains Michelle, “and I hear every day how the people who come here refer to it as a haven. Thanks to the Freemasons, as well as other charities and organisations
that have donated in the past, we can keep going.” n Find out more about the Cancer Care centre by calling 721166.

Globe trotters It isn’t just York that benefits. In November the Freemasons’ Grand Charity approved an emergency grant of £50,000 to the British Red Cross to provide immediate disaster relief across the region affected by the Philippines Typhoon, supplying much needed hygiene kits to thousands of families.

Freemasons have always been deeply involved in charity from the organisation’s earliest days. “The Masons,” explains James, “have been connected with caring for orphans, the sick and the elderly for centuries.” They make significant donations to major disaster relief funds and they have donated to every natural crisis since 1982. In that time the Freemasons have donated over £100 million. “Although we are by no means purely a charitable organisation,” says James, “our belief in helping those less fortunate than ourselves means we do put a lot of time and effort into raising money, giving our time to charitable causes and having a great deal of fun whilst doing so.”
What makes the Freemasons unique is that they do not undertake any external fundraising. All money donated to good causes is raised from the pockets of the members themselves. In the past charities such as local hospices and The Yorkshire Air Ambulance, as well as countless smaller good causes, have benefited from the Mason’s generosity.
Secret handshake not required So far from being a group of cloakwearing, secret-keeping mysterious strangers, The Freemasons seem to do some really great work in our community. And there’s a bunch of other stuff they do as well. But we’re not allowed to tell you about that. Tee hee… n Find out more about the Freemasons in the York area by visiting www.pgl-york.org.uk

Just prior to The Grand Opera House throwing open their doors to special public tours, we take a sneak peek back stage to see what is in store.
In 1868 a huge Corn Exchange was built on Cumberland Street close to the river to allow merchants easy access to business. In 1902 that building was converted into a stately theatre and performance hall which we know today as the Grand Opera House. Not only is the history of this prominent building fascinating, but the theatre itself is made up of wandering corridors, hidden orchestra pits and

dizzyingly high seating arrangements – all of which can now be explored on the new back-stage tours. Treading the boards If the only impression you've previously had of the Grand Opera House has been the view of the stage from your seat, then that is all about to change. Led by a member of the theatre's front-of-house team and also by one of the technical team, the
back-stage tours will show the Opera House in a different light – and also in no light at all.
A brief history of a
The stage, the orchestra pit, the exclusive boxes – all are covered on the hour long tour and at a time when the theatre is 'dark', meaning there'll be no shrieking dames or bustling school parties to disturb you.
1902 – Converted from the Victorian Corn Exchange. First performance was the pantomime Little Red Riding Hood.
One thing is very clear from the tours, which are beginning to be offered from February, and that is that the Grand Opera House was very much designed to be an alternative to the long establish Theatre Royal on St Leonard's Place. Whereas the theatre goers there would sit in silence to see the latest plays and fashions, the

1903 – Renamed as The Opera House and Empire Theatre so as to attract smokers. Smoking was forbidden in higher-class theatres (such as the Theatre Royal) but permitted in music hall-type venues. 1916 – Known simply as the Empire Theatre. Charlie Chaplin, Gracie Fields and Laurel & Hardy all performed there. 1958 – Stage and stall seating removed and replaced with a rollerskating floor. 1989 – After a renovation which saw the stage and stalls rebuilt the theatre reopened as the Grand Opera House with a performance of Macbeth.

Opera House's patrons could enjoy a far more relaxed atmosphere. Smoking was permitted in the building (as it was in all Music Halls) and there was even a separate entrance for the “riff-raff” to plough through into the stalls without disturbing those in the expensive box seats.
Apart from having a clear view of the original hand-painted frieze at the very top of the stage wall, tour-goers can explore the seating way up there. Built in the continental style (meaning there's no central aisle), the Dress Circle features modesty boards between the tiers of seating, meaning ladies didn't have to worry about people peering up their dresses. Which is something we're constantly worried about... View from the box. More about being seen then seeing the stage. All in the details While on the tour things will be pointed out to you that you may never have noticed while attending the latest pantomime. Visitors will be led down below the stage into the dark orchestra pit. Incredibly the small cramped space can accommodate 40 musicians and their instruments during a big show. From the lowest depths,

Howard the
Viking
As he was getting a little too excited about the 30th JORVIK Viking Festival, we gave Howard a packed lunch, some bus money, and then sent him off to the Viking Centre on Coppergate. He’s their problem now. down there beneath the streets of Coppergate, amongst the smells and sights of the recreated ancient city, was an opportunity not to be missed. Plus, I got to dress up as well!
Chain-male I met with Stuart Perry, Interactive Team Leader at the Viking Centre, to show me what kind of kit the average Viking warrior would be adorned with. It is the kind of outfits that the Interactive team – those fearsome looking people in armour who carry swords and axes and greet the visitors – dress in every day. The Jorvik Viking Centre has always been a special place for me. Countless trips during my childhood, both with school and with family, has meant that just one whiff of that pungent subterranean Viking village sends me right back into short
trousers, complete with snotty nose. During such exciting visits my dad would recount the tale about how he “personally saved all the Viking artefacts” himself, by sending freezer trucks from the ASDA where he was manager in the 1980s, to help preserve the finds. Seriously, he never shut up about that. And so, getting the opportunity to get
Obviously it was pretty chilly in Viking York, especially at this time of year, so two thick woollen tunics were helpfully yanked down over my head by Stuart. A heavy pair of woollen trousers were also slipped on and my feet were
wrapped in rather comfortable leather shoes, fastened by wooden toggles. But as the mean streets of Jorvik could be pretty dangerous, particularly with those pesky English hanging around causing trouble, Stuart pulled out the chainmail.

If you think your winter jacket is heavy, you’ve obviously never worn armour. The chunky links of metal pressed down on my shoulders and back quite a bit, but – and due in no small part to the woollen tunics – it was surprisingly comfortable.
the best of york
Also, I felt pretty indestructible jiggling away in the chainmail as Stuart adorned my hip with both an axe and a fine Viking sword.
Streets ahead Wondering around in the recreated village itself was quite an experience, especially without the suspended motorised cars going by, packed with gawping, giggling school children. Walking around at the same level that the Vikings would have actually lived was amazing and it was great to see up close a few of the animatronic characters (especially the famous chap sitting on the loo!). Moving around in the full costume was, after a while, something of a chore. I certainly feel for the Interactive Team members trudging about all day in it, herding tourists and school parties.
Meet the chief We talk to Stuart Perry, Interactive Team Leader at the Viking Centre What do you do? I’m part of JORVIK's crack squad of Viking Interactives. I go under the Nordic name of Fastulf, which means stern wolf. What is an average day like for you? Depends on the day really, but usually I come in to work, don my Viking garb and then do my best to further people's knowledge of this very important and interesting period of history.
AIR GUNS! Spring and CO2 Rifles and Pistols
What can people expect from this year’s JORVIK Viking Festival? Every year the festival seems to grow; this year's collection of events is truly mind-boggling and focuses on the Myths and Legends of the Viking period. So, for the 30th Festival you can expect fun, facts and feasting for all the family. What event are you most looking forward to? The Myths and Legends Combat Arena; five days of action packed sagas featuring all the fighting you can swing a sword at! One in particular will feature Thor fighting an Ice Giant... what more could you want?! Did you enjoy dressing Howard up? Yes, but a Viking warrior should really be able to dress himself!

YORK’S GOLDEN HALF MILE Local author Van Wilson, together with the York Archaeological Trust, has recently published a book about Coney Street. York’s Golden Half Mile: The Story of Coney Street is available from www. yorkarchaeology.co.uk or most good booksellers in the city priced £9.99.
This month: Coney Street. Coney Street, known today as York’s city centre shopping mecca, was known in the 12th century as Cuningstrete – Old Danish for ‘King’s Street’. The street has always been an important part of York and in Roman times it was the site of a road that ran between the walls of the legionary fortress and the River Ouse. Surprisingly, WH Smith, Boots and River Island weren’t started by the Romans – they all came much later. It’s a fascinating street with tonnes of history and human stories – let’s get digging!
//Fac toids//
Coney Street
• The first mention of the street was in a document from 1150.
• Lendal (to the north of Coney Street) was once called Old Coney Street, and Spurriergate (to the south) was known as Little Coney Street. • Coney Street is one of the few roads in York to retain the AngloSaxon ‘street’ instead of taking the Viking ‘gate’. So it could easily have been called Coneygate, which to us sounds like a scandal involving ice-cream cones. • The two churches on the street, St Martin’s and St. Michael’s, were both mentioned in the Doomsday Book. • As early as 1308 the street was described as York’s principal street for business. We’re surprised Starbucks left it so long to set up a franchise there.
Unleash the Temporal Camera! Using a mixture of conventional photography and magic (Photoshop) we can take a picture of a modern place and peer back to see what once occupied the same site. This section of Coney Street will be familiar to the fashion conscious as it shows to current site of Next, River Island and Monsoon. The black and white building we can see here is The
George Hotel, a famous hostelry that existed from around 1600 until demolition in 1888. Ann and Charlotte Bronte stayed here in 1849 on their way to Scarborough where Ann subsequently died. The whole lot was eventually cleared and the first incarnation of the department store Leak & Thorpe was built.

Stop the press! Coney Street has long been associated with printing, with the first copies of Tristram Shandy believed to have been produced there. But it is the relationship with newspapers that has really left a lasting impression. The Yorkshire Evening Press was established on Coney Street in 1882 and there it remained, in the buildings now occupied by City Screen and Pitcher and Piano, until moving to Walmgate in 1989. Pop down to City Screen’s Basement Bar for a gig and you can still see those white tiled walls pictured here in the 1960s.
Then and Now Here we have St Martin’s Church, the black and white photo having been taken around 1900 and the colour shot in the present day. Bit of a difference, isn’t there? If you are looking for someone to thank for the reduction in the size of the interior church space and the creation of the memorial garden in what once was the nave, look to the Nazis. St Martin’s, along with dozens of other York buildings including The Guildhall, was bombed on 29th April 1942 as part of the Baedeker Raids which targeted picturesque English cities. The restoration work was not completed until 1968, but as you can see form the pictures, the 18th century clock survived the bombing. The little admiral on top of the clock looks to the skies as if to say, “Nice try, Adolf.”

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and husband. But more importantly he is a man. As a boy he assumed he would grow up to be whisked away on an adventure by a wizard and a gang of dwarves, but at 32 he finds himself writing for Your Local Link. These are his (un)manly words.
Face value
Forgive me if I’m preaching to the choir here, but having children is an enormously amazing experience. Usually in this column I let loose a monthly rant about how at home I’m picked on, beaten up and generally used as a climbing frame/method of transportation by my daughter. This month however, is different - and it’s all thanks to the image above. Normally the readers of these humble words (hello mum and dad) are welcomed onto the page by my smiling, chubby-cheeked face which was captured in the conventional manner with a camera. This month you may have noticed I look a bit different, as this is in fact an artist’s impression of me. The artist was my three year old daughter.
Dats you, dat is Although it may only be a few wonky lines on a chalk wall in our dining room (or rather the Mosley-Chalk wall) it represents how our lovely little girl is growing and beginning to express herself in other ways than just
28
the classic ‘toddler scribble’; example, from a year ago, above. Not only am I thrilled to see her screw her face up in concentration and draw something that actually looks like something, but it’s a real honour to have been selected as the subject of her latest project. “Dats you,” she said while showing me the drawing. “Dats your hairy bee-yurd. I don’t got a bee-yurd, I got a chin.” It’s heart-warming to see this and to know it’s all been worth that effort. You get your children crayons, then
paints, then pencils and pens. You sit with them for hours on end, getting splattered with finger paints, getting jabbed by pencils, and desperately scrubbing black felt tip out of your mother-in-law’s carpet before she notices. You nod and smile and patiently encourage every scribble, every smudge, and every nine-sided circle they joyously create. And then, after hundreds of hours of this, WHAM! your face is on the wall and there’s a three foot artist awaiting your critique. Sign of the times Incredibly my Turin Shroud-like appearance on the dining room chalk wall wasn’t the only creative milestone this month. After our daughter drew a picture of a snowman (“He a snowman. And he got boobies.”), my wife asked her if she’d like to sign her artwork. And by-golly-crikey, she did! Trust me when I say that says Ava; the crossed V is basically an upside down A. Bless her.
But, just I was beginning to conclude that my daughter must be some sort of artistic wonder child, the universe decided to teach me a lesson. Ava declared: “You go away now daddy. I gonna paint myself.” So I left the room, expecting to return and discover another, smaller face next to mine on the wall. But no, she’d literally painted herself. Every inch of herself. The bathroom that evening looked as if someone had had a paintball fight.

And another thing... it’s just another day
My wife and I don’t do Valentine’s Day. The most we’ll do is, at around 10pm that night, suddenly say, “Oh, it’s Valentine’s Day. Yeah, love ya and stuff.” This year will be a little different though as I’m planning to surprise my wife with a ‘Balance-tines Day’. That morning I’m going to padlock roller skates to her feet and sit back and watch as she spends all day slipping around, trying to keep her balance. It’ll be hilarious. I’m such a catch.
Imagine that! Droning on
Inspired by the recent news that Amazon are planning to deliver packages via remote control helicopters, I’ve been thinking about the future use of these drones. I’ve decided to start my own company using tiny helicopters as hedge trimmers. You call me up, tell me about your unruly bushes, and I send out one of my robot flying drones to you. The spinning rotors will have razor-sharp blades attached to them, allowing the thing to trim your hedges without even landing. I’m fairly certain that nothing will ever go wrong with this plan. Imagine that!

City are red,

violets are blue... in February, and supporters will be able to cheer them on in home games against Cheltenham (8th Feb) and high fliers Southend (22nd). This will most likely include the chance to see new players John McCombe, Shaquille McDonald and Russell Penn, whom supporters were delighted put ‘Penn to paper’ during the January transfer window.
February: the month of love, and there’s nothing more I would love than for York City to storm up the League Two table and get amongst the promotion chasing pack. Given the poor start to the season, they may have left it too late; but after three consecutive wins in early January, it looks like Nigel Worthington is finally getting the team to gel. If the Minster Men are to keep moving in the right direction they will need a strong month
The start of York City’s mini revival came when they saw in the New Year with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Morecambe which couldn’t have come at a better time. Some people in the Main Stand in front of me were celebrating like we had won the Champions League. I guess it could be worse, we could support a team like Manchester United whose supporters really can’t take losing, yet despite erratic league form are still in Europe’s premier competition. Weirdly, the ‘Champions League’ in February becomes a knockout cup, not a league, featuring the likes of teams such as Chelsea and Real Madrid, who aren’t actually champions in their own countries.
As if jibes from former players and football pundits weren’t bad enough, Manchester United have come under fire from a cheeky Yorkshire pizza restaurant recently. The Castello Pizzeria, based in Scarborough, poked fun at David Moyes and his bad fortune with the lastest addition to their menu. The Manchester United calzone (a type of folded pizza) promises ‘a cosmopolitan blend of high-class ingredients’, just like the United squad, that ‘folds under the slightest pressure’. The calzone costs £5.50, which the menu states is ‘0.005% of Ashley Young’s weekly wages.’

Dan’s Book
Stick to boxing I have heard of sports stars going from hero to zero but I think former Heavyweight Boxing Champion Evander Holyfield takes some beating, and I don’t mean in the ring. Of course that proved difficult for many (including Mike Tyson who decided that because he wasn’t going to knock him out, he would gnaw on his ear instead). That multi-million bust up played a part in Holyfield earning a reported $150million over the course of his illustrious career. A career that can’t have stooped any lower than coming behind Jim Davidson in a popularity contest, or 'Celebrity Big Brother' as it's also known; a programme the relevance of which matches that of a Spice Girls reunion tour. Surely he could have done something more meaningful in his retirement? Take George Foreman; his grill is so famous my mum thinks that’s what he is best known for.
Down under Thank god for Andy Murray. A man who, off the court, sounds as exciting as William Hague, but at the time of writing was making inroads at the Australian Open despite unbearably hot conditions. In fact, things were so hot out in Melbourne that Canadian tennis player Frank Dancevic claimed he saw the cartoon character Snoopy on court before fainting in the extreme heat. Not that I am a big tennis fan, or even Murray fan for that matter, but I just wanted to see some sort of Brit win in Australia after the debacle of the Ashes. While Andy Murray was easing into the Aussie Open Second Round, our cricketers were playing a Prime Ministers XI in Canberra. They said that win was the confidence boost they needed. I didn’t actually see the team they were playing but had images of Alistair Cook trying to bat his way back into form off the fast bowling of David Cameron and off-spin of Tony Blair. However, that didn’t really work either, as he scored just one run before being given out.

The museum hopes to decipher the diaries in order to find out more about the writer – believed to be Wass Reader – and the Palestine Campaign he fought in. The diaries will be displayed as part of the '1914: When the world changed forever' exhibition. n If you think you can help, email Katie.brown@ymt.org.uk or call 650363.

Smartphone APPS
We’ve scoured cyberspace to bring you the best gizmos on the market, from the ingenious to the downright bizarre. The mind boggles... Lumen Smart Bulb:
Neurosky Mindflex:
How many smartphone apps does it take to change a light bulb? Just one, especially if you buy the Lumen Smart Bulb. Standard light bulbs are soooo last year, and quite frankly we don’t even want to switch one on unless we can do so from our phones and choose the colour of the light. This amazing (and admittedly expensive) bulb is controlled from an app which allows you to change the colour and also control the brightness and set a timer. Having a party? No worries; just set the bulb to vibrant greens and blues. Romantic Valentine’s dinner? Sure, reds and soft pinks should enhance the smooching mood. Gadget rating 8/10 £49.99 (for one bulb!) Available from www.firebox.com
If you’ve ever dreamed of being a Jedi and using the power of your mind to move objects, here’s all your Christmases and birthdays rolled into one. The Neurosky Mindflex is a revolutionary game that uses your humble brainwaves to navigate a small ball around an obstacle course. Simply place the included headset on your bonce and concentrate on the wee ball. The sensors will read the intensity of your brain’s activity and control a tiny fan in the gaming area which will levitate the ball. Okay, so not as good as Master Yoda but this will be a sure-fire hit at parties. Gadget rating 9/10 £39.95 Available from www.red5.co.uk
tried& tested
Mini Turbo Drone: We don’t have the greatest track record when it comes to remote control helicopters after the last one we tested got tangled in Nic’s hair. Although that incident remains as one of Howard’s happiest memories, we were slightly wary when the Mini Turbo Drone arrived. A tiny quadcopter (the type with four rotor blades) this measures just 12 centimetres across and is as light as a feather. Controlling the drone takes a bit of practice (it ended up in the neighbour’s gutter at one point) but once mastered it is tonnes of fun. Charging the two included batteries takes about half an hour, giving you a combined play time of around 15 minutes. We’re happy to announce that Nic’s hair was untouched, although Sarah did crash it into Dave several times, possibly on purpose. Gadget rating 9/10 £34.99 Available from www.paramountzone.com
Photo Grid Collage Maker. Turn your photo collection into pretty collages and grids with this free app. UK Postage Calculator. An essential app for eBay sellers and anyone wanting to know just how much their parcel will cost to post. Ancestry. Build, update, and show off your family tree with this user-friendly app. It makes finding and learning more about your heritage fun. Satellite AR. This app will show what satellites are currently above you in the sky by simply pointing your phone’s camera upwards. Tentacle Wars. An intriguing name leads to a fascinating single-player game of strategy and science.

We have all the latest news from things that go vroom!
Where we’re going we don’t need roads
Building bridges
It has recently been announced that motorists in York will soon have a brand new bridge to cruise over, after plans to develop part of the city have been approved. The ‘teardrop’ area of York (between Leeman Road and Boroughbridge Road and encased by the railways) has long been home to train sheds and derelict buildings, but in the coming years will be redeveloped into homes, shops and offices – all accessed by a new bridge over the tracks from Holgate Road. Keep an eye on these pages for continuing news of the work taking place, and we’ll be sure to let Distribution Manager Jon know about all those new houses he’ll need to deliver to.
Cars are getting increasingly futuristic these days. We’ve previously reported on self-driving cars, motion controlled radios and electric motors – which are all well and good but where the heck are the flying cars? The film Back to the Future 2 promised us flying cars by 2015, so with just ten months to go we’re not holding out much hope. But fortunately the Southern China Aviation Industry Group have just applied for a patent on a flying car that uses two giant spinning rotors fitted to the underside of the vehicle. Although the plans look a little sketchy (we all remember drawing something similar when we were children –
remember: red stripes make things go faster) we’re excited that one day soon we might actually be able to fly straight over the river without worrying about a fine for crossing Lendal Bridge.
Wheels within wheels If you work, do you get to the office by car? If so, you’re one of 16.7 million people in the UK (six out of ten) who rely on their brum-brums to get to work. According to a special report conducted by the RAC called The Car and The Commute, outside of London people struggle to find appropriate and cost-effective public transport and so are forced to drive to
work. But because the cost of driving is increasing beyond the rate of inflation, some commuters are spending up to a third of their disposable income on their cars, travelling on average ten miles a day. In fact, those living out in rural areas are travelling more miles, spending more money and yet are earning less.
What about you? Are you stuck behind the wheel throughno choice of your own? Let us know via facebook.com/locallinkyork and twitter.com/locallinkyork

As winter thaws and the first few signs of spring make their appearance, we lift the bonnet of our cars and check all is well. • Check your fluids. Oil and brake fluid are a must to check, but also top up the windscreen washer solution – you’ve probably used a lot of it during the past few months. • Check your battery. Make sure it still works fine and check that the connectors are free of rust and corrosion. • Check your exhaust. Look around and under the exhaust for any signs of rust or damage to the metal that secures it to the car. • Check your tires. Winter salt and road grit can take their toll, so check the tread, air pressure and general condition. • Check your wipers. How have they held up after the winter blasting? Any signs of wear should be fixed with a fresh new set. • Check in for A tune up. For ultimate peace of mind book your pride and joy into a garage for a full service. If you need a mechanic then peruse the ads in these pages. Each and every one of them is amazing. Praise indeed…

Car Maintenance Tips
She bakes, she makes, she decorates…frankly there’s nothing our very own Rachel doesn’t know. Every month she’ll be passing on some of her favourite money and time saving tips… What a card: Got a casserole dish or pan with caked on food that won't budge, no matter how long you soak it? Take an old plastic store card and use it to chisel it off. Just make sure you don't use your bank card... Fresh as a daisy: Fed up of buying fabric freshener? Make your own. All you'll need is a spray bottle, water, one teaspoon of baking soda and around 12 drops of your favourite essential oil. Mix the ingredients together in your bottle and away you go! From brew to shoe: Got smelly shoes? Pop a dry tea bag or two inside to absorb the odour. Just make sure you don’t use them to make a cuppa with afterwards... yuck!
40
Ice, ice baby: Is your sarnie looking sad by the time you arrive at work? Make your own ice pack to keep it fresh. Take a zip lock sandwich bag, and fill it to around a third of the way up with washing up liquid. Remove any air and seal, then pop it in the freezer. To make sure children don't mistake it for a treat, you might want to add some food colouring, too. And voila! A homemade ice pack for next to nothing. G'day, stains: Run out of stain remover for your clothes? If you've got some eucalyptus oil knocking about, you might be in luck. Dab one or two drops of the oil onto the stain, then leave it for ten minutes. Wash your clothing as usual and leave to air dry.
We don’t mean to label you, but… Be it a massive mailout to a million of your customers, or a couple of sticky labels for your spice rack, Sessions UK are the people you need to speak to. They specialise in the design, manufacture and supply of machinery that prints and affixes labels. It’s an industry they know extremely well, having evolved from Sessions of York, which kept the city well labelled for almost 200 years. Their machines have already been shipped out around the world and the company continues to grow. So whatever your need or project, Sessions UK can help – and they’ll even ‘stick around’ with some excellent support and repair services. n Call 61613.

Want to save up to £200?
Are you thinking of selling your home? The team at YO2 Properties, the local independent estate agent in the YO2 area of York, need you! Since May, the small, but incredibly dedicated, team have sold over 85% of the properties they've listed, achieving an average sale price of 97.4% of the asking price and taking on average only 30 days to sell each property (STC). So, thanks to this amazing success, they're urgently looking for some more properties to sell. For a free, no obligation valuation of your property, get in touch – there are discounted rates available!
Our gas and electricity bills may continue to rise, but thanks to a little help from City of York Council, we may be able to save a few pennies – in fact, up to £200! The council has partnered with energy switching expert’s iChoosr to make it simple for residents to consider switching their energy tariffs. Anyone who pays a household energy bill can register for free; all you'll need is a copy of your most recent energy bill and a spare few minutes. When registration closes on 17th February, iChoosr will invite energy companies to offer their best prices to everyone in the scheme. There's no obligation to accept any offers, or any charges if you don't switch – all it will cost you is your time. n Visit www.york.gov.uk/ switchingenergy or call 551550.

A survey carried out by property experts Rightmove has identified our neighbours in Harrogate as the happiest in the country. The report, which questioned 40,000 people across the UK about how happy they were about where they lived, found that the residents of the spa town were happiest of all. Oh, and in case you were wondering where we came on the survey… well, we were the 54th happiest out of the 110 towns and cities questioned. We knew we didn’t just want a dormer bungalow and were keen to see quite how much space we could get out of a potential new upper floor. Paul Roberts of ADDS explains: “Our brief was to modernise an existing 1930s bungalow and increase the size of the existing bedrooms in the roof space whilst at the same time increasing the insulation values and giving the dated design a fresh look. Plans were drawn up showing the new layout and elevations and we produced a computer generated 3D visual to give them a more realistic
taste of the finished result.

Designs on the future The project design was handled by York architect firm ADDS. With the latest technology at their disposal, the experienced team of designers have the ability to carry out detailed site surveys and produce accurate computer generated working drawings – which is just what they did at Andy and Zena’s house.
From the existing dated bungalow with two small bedrooms in the roof we have now given Andy and Zena a new ensuite master bedroom, a family bathroom and two further double bedrooms, all within the new roof space.” n Find out more about ADDS and their innovative approach to architectural design at www.addsyork.co.uk Tel: 762691 Bricks and mortar Newbegin Building and Glazing is the York based company that completed the construction of the house refurbishments. Q.
The back of my garden is very damp and surrounded by trees. Could you give me some advice on what to plant in this area? Of all non-flowering perennials, ferns are easily the most garden-worthy, offering an exciting variety of shapes and heights, for use as specimen plants or in bold groupings. Most of the flowering ferns are of medium to large size and will thrive when given humus-rich soil, moisture and shade. Asplenium scolopendrium (“Hart’s tongue fern”). The strap-shaped, wavy-margined shiny fronds of this curiously attractive evergreen fern gradually form a bold clump. It is also ideal for the front of a shady border. Dryopteris wallichiana (“Wallich’s wood fern”). The erect fronds of this lovely fern form a big, semi-evergreen shuttlecock and have dark scaly stalks. Its fronds grow taller if rich soil and shelter are provided, Dryopteris erythrosora (“Japanese red shield fern”). One of the most colourful of hardy ferns, its coppery-red young fronds in spring and summer contrast with the shiny, dark green overwintering mature fronds.
Polystichum Munitum (“Sword fern”). Once it is established, this luxuriant fern can transform an otherwise dull corner or border. The laddered, evergreen fronds will form a large, handsome evergreen clump. Athyrium filix-mas (“Painted fern”). Finely divided, herbaceous, light-green to silver fronds form a graceful shuttlecock with a red-brown central stalk. This is a beautiful fern and good for waterside sites.
Q.
Now that spring is just around the corner, can you give me some advice on growing potatoes? First, you should prepare the ground by digging in some well-rotted farmyard manure. This should be done around February-March time as this will give the tubers food for the growing season ahead. There are three different varieties of potatos; earlies, second earlies, and main crop, so choosing what time of year you would like your potatoes to be ready is important. Earlies mature 12 weeks after planting, second earlies approximately 16 weeks from planting and main crop up to 20 weeks from planting. Buy your set potatoes in February-April and sprout them in a dry, frost-free place until they produce green buds on the tuber – this will help the potato grow faster when planting out later. Prepare your allotment by lightly digging in fertilizer before planting. After that, start planting by making a small trench in which you place your potato tubers about 12 inches apart in a row. Cover them by making a small ridge of soil over the tubers. The distance between the rows should be about 30 inches apart. Look for the information on the potato packet as this will tell you about how the potatoes can be used i.e. mashing, chips, boiling or salad.

Allot of possibilities As the days get longer and the first buds of spring appear through the thawing ground, have you ever considered how nice it would be to grow your own food? Unfortunately your back yard is concrete all the way down to the Roman levels, so what can you do? According to the National Allotment Society waiting lists for your own patch of allotment have gotten shorter across the country. n Spring is the perfect time to get growing, so if you’ve ever dreamt of having your own private patch of nature, call City of York Council on 553433.
Oh I would plant
one thousand trees… Fans of trees rest easy, because you now have 1000 more to look at. That is because a stalwart team of conservation volunteers have planted a whole load of new trees at Three Hagges Jubilee Wood at Escrick Park Estate. The 22 acre site, which has been dedicated to the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by the owner Rosalind Forbes Adam, is intended to attract lots of unique and interesting species of animals and has been created with the help of Forestry Commission and the Woodland Trust. n The next step is to plant a further 9000 trees, so if you would like to help with that, call 728252.
York has taken another step to becoming a nature lover’s dream city, after Rawcliffe Meadows was declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England. This means that the land, which is a vital habitat for the endangered tansy beetle as well as other species, will in the future be protected against harmful development. The status will also mean that further funding could be made available for the 25 acre site. n The area is cared for by the Friends of Rawcliffe Meadow, and to find out more about them – such as how to get involved – visit www. rawcliffemeadows.wordpress.com
Daf-Pharoah-dil How many Ancient Egyptians does it take to change a bulb? As everyone’s favourite spring flower begins to populate the grassy banks of the city walls, here’s a factoid for you to impress your partner/children/dog with. Ramses II (aka “The Great”) was buried in his sarcophagus with daffodil bulbs placed onto his eyes as they were a symbol of rebirth and renewal. And here’s another; if you think daffodils are purely a spring flower, think again. In most years the first crops come from the Scilly Isles… in November! Thank that lovely warm Gulf Stream for the early flowering.

Tansy that
your garden
As the worst of winter begins to pass, here’s what you can be getting on with in your garden. Animals. February is a great month to put up nesting boxes for birds so as to attract them to your garden. Opposite a window of your house makes it easy to see them coming and going, but be sure to point the bird house to the north or north-east to make sure they don’t overheat on a sunny day. Also, if you get up early enough you might hear robins, thrushes and blackbirds singing their dawn spring chorus. Plants. If you are planting this month, be sure to place some native British plants amongst the more exotic varieties. This will ensure that native species of insects and other animals are attracted to them to use for breeding. A nice wide range of different kinds of plants and flowers is a good idea, especially if you want a bright and vibrant garden in the future.

heathers
The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down. Almost all species of heather require acidic soil conditions to thrive. Therefore, before you can decide which heathers to grow you need to know the pH of your soil. The degree of alkalinity or acidity of your soil is measured on a scale of 0 to 14 known as the pH scale. Soils vary from very acid with a pH scale of 3.5 to very alkaline with a pH just over 8. Ericaceous plants require significant quantities of iron, which in soils with a pH above 6.5 is rendered virtually insoluble and iron deficiency sets in, causing the plant to yellow and then die. To discover your soil pH, buy a soil testing kit. These are inexpensive and available at most Garden Centres. Investing in one could save you money in the long run if your soil is unsuitable. The species chosen will depend on whether the soil is
alkaline or acid. If you are fortunate and your soil is acid, you can grow any heather cultivars.
Getting started If your pH is higher than 6.5, the ideal method is to restrict your choice to Erica carnea, Erica x darleyensis, Erica vagans. Other species may be grown by adopting one of the methods below: • Normally the best method is to create a raised bed about 60cm (24”) deep on top of your existing soil. Edge the bed with peat blocks or allow the bed to drop to normal soil level. In which case, plant lime tolerant plants around the edge, such as Erica carnea. • The next approach is watering twice a year with an iron compound which remains soluble

in the presence of calcium. Such a compound is called chelated iron or sequestered iron, and is sometimes sold under the trade name Sequestrene. Heavy soils will still need conditioning by the addition of humus such as sphagnum moss peat or fine bark. • The third approach is to dig flowers of sulphur into the bed, which has the effect of tying up calcium, allowing the iron, which is already in the soil, to become more soluble. In clay soils use 4oz per square metre (square yard) for every one pH drop required and add peat or fine bark to improve the condition of the soil. In sandy soils, reduce the rate to 1oz per square metre (square yard).
Year-round beauty It is possible to have flowering heathers 12 months of the year. Starting in November Erica carnea and Erica x darleyensis varieties will go on flowering until April. These are followed by Daboecia varieties flowering from April until September and finally Calluna varieties starting in July and going on until November. Many of the Calluna varieties have stunning coloured new foliage in spring. Good examples include Spring Torch, Spring Cream and Robert Chapman.

GROW YOUR OWN with Debbie Pendle from Brunswick Organic Nursery
Growing your own fruit and veg is rewarding, good for the planet – and your pocket. Here’s how…
cabbage patch kids
The vibrant colours of Red Drumhead and January King or the blistered texture of the savoys are also most welcome in the winter garden, when even a thick covering of snow does little to faze these hardy plants. Cabbages are grouped according to their season of harvest: spring cabbage, summer cabbage, autumn cabbage and winter cabbage, which also includes the savoys and red cabbage. With a never-ending choice of cabbage varieties on offer, it makes sense to sow a few seeds from each group to give continuity of cropping throughout the year.
Spring cabbage is sown from late July to late August, so it makes a great follow on crop from early potatoes. It can be sown directly into your main vegetable plot after the potatoes have been lifted. Sow seeds thinly into prepared drills 35cm apart, and then thin out seedlings to the required spacing, 30-38cm for hearted spring cabbage, or 10cm for spring greens. Planting cabbage Cabbages need a sunny site and firm soil, so where possible prepare the ground in autumn, adding well rotted manure. If necessary, apply a dressing of lime three weeks before planting to raise the pH to above seven. Firm the soil by shuffling along the surface on your heels, and then rake flat and set up a garden line with rows 60cm (24in) apart.
Sowing cabbage Late summer and autumn cabbages can be sown outdoors in March or April. Traditionally, cabbages are sown in a seedbed and transplanted later. Prepare the seed bed by digging over the soil The cabbage family is and raking to achieve a fine crumb attractive to a wide range of structure. Sow the seed thinly in pest and diseases. Prevent shallow drills 30cm (12in) apart and cabbage white butterflies keep damp if conditions are dry. If laying eggs on your crop by only a few plants are required, you covering the cabbages with could sow into seed trays and pot fine netting. It will also keep into 9cm pots when big enough to the pigeons from feasting on handle. Winter cabbage is exactly your young plants. the same technique, sowing seed in April or May.
60
Using a trowel, prepare the planting holes 45cm (18in) apart and add organic fertiliser and work well in. Transplant the young plants to their final growing position, setting the lowest leaves at ground level. Water in well to settle the soil around the roots, and check the plants are secure. Never let the plants dry out, as cabbages need plenty of water. Give the crop a nitrogen boost later in the season.

Every month we’ll be bringing you some top tips on making your garden a haven for wildlife.
Animal of the month... birds! Looking after our feathered friends will be great for your garden, as they'll get rid of the pests for you in an eco-friendly way. Plus, watching a family of birds grow up will be a great way to teach your children about the great outdoors.
Home tweet home Now is the time to start thinking about setting up a birdhouse for your feathered friends. If you install one in the spring, you could have a family of birds living with you by the summer. There are plenty of birdhouses available to buy, but if you're handy with a saw it's a great project to try yourself. Here are a few points to remember: • Don't include perches on your birdhouse – they can make it easier for predators to gain access. • Train your pets (especially cats) to stay away from your birdhouse – spraying them with water when they go near it may do the trick.
62
• Check that the opening to your birdhouse is the appropriate size and shape for the type of birds that you'd like to attract. Robins prefer an oblong opening, whereas blue tits opt for a round hole, for example. • Don't paint the interior of your birdhouse, and avoid using lead-based paints on the exterior as this can poison birds. • Every time a family of birds vacates your birdhouse, give it a clean with a solution of nine parts water and one part bleach, then rinse again with clear water. Store the house in your shed for the winter if you can.
Food, gloriousfood These tasty treats will attract a range of birds. Peanuts great spotted woodpecker Fat balls blue tit and great tit Nyger seed siskin and goldfinch Sunflower heart bullfinch Millet sparrows and collared doves
Bath time! A bird bath is a great addition to any garden. Not only will it provide a vital source of drinking water for birds during the winter, but it will also help them to cool down during the summer. Birds also need to preen themselves in order to stay healthy, and a bath is really helpful to help keep their feathers in top condition. Your local garden centre should have a few to choose from.

Got a problem with your pet? Tracey Pulleyn of Minster Vets has the answer! Q. I’m looking into breeding my dog. Do I need to make any preparations to help keep her healthy? You should always ensure that your bitch is in the best condition possible for breeding and that she has no breeding related issues that could be passed on to her pups. Seek veterinary advice for more clarification on this before deciding to breed your dog.
Q. Is there any products I can use to help stop my puppy chewing? There are a few toys you can purchase as teething chews, with Kong being a good range to look at. A top tip would be to store them in the fridge before you give them so they are nice and cool on the puppie’s gums. Always try to distract your puppy from chewing on your hands as this soon turns into a mouthing habit. Although it’s not too bad when they are puppies, it is not ideal for a fully grown dog to be mouthing as this can be seen to be aggressive.
If the bitch is deemed to be suitable for breeding then you will need to ensure her flea, worming and vaccinations are up to date. Once pregnant, nutrition also needs to be taken into account towards the end of the pregnancy; this is to ensure she is in top condition to look after her pups. At Minster Vets we provide free nurse clinics and would happily discuss and help you plan all of the above to ensure your bitch and puppies get the best possible care.

No, we're not talking about a mini version of the band that played that 'Firestarter' song, but rather what your child will feel like after a little help from the team at Kip McGrath. The qualified teachers offer expert tuition in maths and English for youngsters aged between four and 16, which can not only make a huge difference to your child's grades, but also to their confidence. The focus is on making learning fun and engaging and helping students to reach their full potential, so your child will actually enjoy the extra tuition! There are also free, no obligation assessments available, which are designed to test your child's maths and English skills so that an appropriate programme can be created to suit their level. So, whether your child needs to catch up and keep ahead, or a little extra help with revision for SATs or GCSEs, the team at Kip McGrath can help. n Visit www.kipmcgrath.co.uk or call 797947.

tried& tested VitaBella Spa Treatment in a Box
This is ideal for a special treat. The fabric face mask comes in a tablet form, with a hydrating treatment complex that you pour onto it to make it expand before smoothing it onto your face. Apart from being fun to use, it really does work thanks to the gorgeous ingredients – aloe vera, argan oil, wheat germ oil and hibiscus seed proteins – and hyaluronic acid, a natural moisturiser that can hold 1000 times its weight in water. Our skin felt soft and smooth, and the pot of anti-ageing face cream keeps the effects lasting for up to a week. We also loved the fact that there was no messy clay getting stuck in our hair! l £20 VitaBella www.myvitabella.co.uk
Every month, we scour the beauty world for the best products so you don’t have to. It’s a tough job, but, y’know...
Jan Marini Antioxidant Recover-E Face Cream
We found this cream is especially good for really dry skin, and can be used as rarely as once a week to provide deep moisturising – a little goes a very long way! We adored the scent, and also found that it's really great around the eye area. The cream includes anti-inflammatory agents and antioxidants, fantastic during the colder months. l £40 Effortless Skin www.effortlessskin.com
Those of us with eczema found that this lotion worked significantly better than the majority of prescription creams we'd tried – especially on our hands, where our skin was transformed from a cracked bright red, to soft, smooth and evenly toned after only four to five days. The cream soothed irritation and even made our nails feel stronger. We're impressed with the price, too – especially as it comes with a 60-day money back guarantee! l £12.24 Forever Living www.forevershopnow.com

Aloe Moisturising Lotion
Care Aqueous Emollient Cream
This has to be our favourite multitasking product of the month – perhaps ever. The cream is a twoin-one emollient and soap substitute that is a true all rounder. Use it on your face then rinse off for a cleanser that will leave your skin feeling ultra clean but also super soft; use it all over in the bath or shower; use it to remove make-up; leave it on dry skin to provide it with a moisture boost... we’re pretty sure we’ll find some more uses for it, too. It’s also fantastic if you have eczema. We love this – especially as it’s so cheap! RRP £2.99 Available at independent pharmacies and www.pharmacy2u.co.uk

Breakfast of
champions
What did you have for breakfast? This year Farmhouse Breakfast Week will take place from 26th January to 1st February, during which the whole nation will be encouraged to eat a hearty, healthy breakfast each day. But if like many of us in the Your Local Link office your breakfast merely consists of a hot cup of coffee, we have news for you. According to research carried out by a University in Maryland, the ideal time to have cup of coffee is 10.30am, not first thing in morning as many of us do. It seems that the hormone cortisol, the brain chemical responsible for alertness, naturally peaks when you first wake up meaning the caffeine in your latte isn’t having much effect at all. By waiting until around 10.30am, so say the Maryland neuroscientists, the coffee will give you a boost as your natural cortisol levels begin to dip. So the next time your colleagues greet you to work with “Shall we stick the kettle on?” tell them to give it an hour or so. n Find out more about healthy breakfasts at www.shakeupyourwakeup.com

h Should I speak to him? Every morning I see a gorgeous looking man on the bus. I can’t stop staring at him. He’s glanced my way a few times and now he’s started to smile at me when he gets off at his stop. Should I speak to him? I don’t want to look too desperate. PM, Dringhouses. Maybe you could get your friend to tell his friend how you feel? Or you could find out his name and write it on your pencil case. Because you are twelve, aren’t you? Seriously, PM, this is not the behaviour of a grown woman. Next time he smiles at you, try saying hello. I know it sounds drastic, but it might just work. As long as you avoid sitting on his knee, inviting him to meet your parents or lying in wait outside his workplace, I doubt if you’ll seem too desperate. I would play down the endless staring, though. His smile may be a sign of encouragement, but you could also be one lovesick grin away from a restraining order. Believe me, I know. It still hurts that I’m not allowed within a hundred yards of Michael Buble.
h Caught in the middle
I’ve just started a new relationship, but my daughters won’t behave in front of my new girlfriend. Last week we all went to Pizza Express and they refused to talk to or even look at her. They had some crayons with them and drew my girlfriend with buck teeth, hairy armpits and a whale-like body. She was very offended. I have a feeling my ex migh t have put them up to it. How can I sort this out? JC, Acomb
From
£15
Your daughters’ behaviour is unacceptable – unless, of course, you are dating a very fat, hairy woman with bad teeth, in which case they ’re spot on. You need to step up and be firm. Don’t get your ex involved because this is about you and your relationship with your daughters . Yes, there will be tears and tantrums, but if you are consistent, firm and fair your little girls will hopefully grow into the sort of young women who one day will have boyfriends of their own who migh t take them on a date to a restaurant with the children from his first marriage. Karma, as they say, is a bitch.

ASK THE EXPERT
Hair and Beauty Q&A
BEFORE after
Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas! BEFORE
after
Q. I have hollows underneath my eyes – is there anything that I can do to correct this? You’ve probably heard about operations to remove under-eye bags, which have been common for years. However, many people have the opposite problem when trough-like hollows develop where the cheekbone meets the eye. These are called tear troughs, and they are caused by a combination of a loss of facial volume and tissue elasticity, a mild reduction in bone volume and a general descent of the skin. This can also cause dark circles under the eyes, and can make you look as though you’ve not slept in weeks, even if you’re well rested. One option is surgery: blepharoplasty, or a lower eyelid lift. However, this is not always appropriate. For a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure, tear trough filling is ideal as it offers a reduced risk of complications and minimal recovery time. The treatment consists of micro-injections of hyaluronic acid dermal filler, a natural substance that is present in all living things. The area is then massaged to ensure that the gel is distributed evenly, and the results are instant and last between six and 12 months.
Q. My husband is losing his hair, and he’s quite embarrassed about it. Are there any treatments that actually work? Hair transplants can sometimes be costly and painful, but there is a less expensive alternative available that can promote hair growth. JetPeel Hair Therapy involves blasting the head with an oxygen and hair treatment solution to promote blood circulation, stimulate hair follicles and supplement nutrition for hair reproduction. Each treatment lasts about 30 minutes. It’s particularly good for male pattern baldness, or men or women who feel that their hair is thinning.
Q. I have a problem with my ruddy complexion. What can I do? You may be suffering from rosacea. The symptoms include redness and visible blood vessels, usually in the facial area, and can also include flushing. The good news is that these symptoms can be successfully treated through vascular laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments. The treatments work by aiming narrow beams of light at the visible blood vessels in the skin, which produces heat that causes the veins to shrink so that they are no longer visible. There is minimal damage to surrounding tissue, and there’s even evidence to suggest that the light helps to remodel your skin matrix so that your vessels are supported better.
Offering a wide variety of Murad products, and with treatments ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. n Visit www.skindoctorclinics.co.uk or call 633833.

What NOT to do
on Valentine’s Day Other magazines and websites might be crammed full of romantic Valentine’s advice this month, but Your Local Link is taking a different angle. Here’s our list of things you definitely should not do on a first date. • Don’t go to a restaurant that doesn’t have cutlery. Finger food like shellfish, sushi, spare ribs and pizza are out. Nobody needs to awkwardly tell their date that they’ve got barbeque sauce smeared over their chin. • Don’t go to the cinema. “Hello, nice to meet you. You look nice. Shall we see this film? Okay. Shall we sit alarmingly close to each other in the dark in silence for two hours? Great. Think this will be an effective and romantic way to get to know one another?” No, it won’t.
• Your life is not an award-winning screenplay. Don’t assume you can recreate the film Before Sunset by taking your date on a romantic stroll around the city for several hours at night-time. Even the wittiest of us will run out of things to talk about after a while.
• Sports are not romantic. The hustle and bustle of the York City Stadium as the Minster Men tackle Castleford FC is not a good first date. Neither is a pub where the words ‘LIVE SKY SPORTS HERE’ appear by the door. • Going shopping is not a date… screamed every man that has ever lived. • Don’t pretend to be someone else. Remember girls and boys, being yourself is always the best bet. Don’t try to impress your date by being someone you really aren’t. So keep it simple, fun and informal.

There may be some concern for an older person’s ill-health at this time and at the opposite end of the scale, the welfare of children will be much on your mind. Anything to do with education should be relevant, including training schemes, courses for professional qualifications, and even driving lessons. All these things act as a distraction at a time when you need to be focusing on your own desires and dreams. Another distraction has to do with your health… there are no major illnesses that I can foresee but there may be a recurring problem with joints and limbs, and whatever we’re talking about here isn’t just a bit of rheumatism. Knees, ankles and elbows seem to be your Achilles heel at the moment, so mind how you go.

(19th February - 20th March)
(21st March - 19th April)
(20th April - 20th May)
(21st May - 20th June)
A very good month for new jobs and business ventures. . The 3rd, 4th and 5th either see something valuable being placed into your hands – or you are given the knowledge that it is on its way. The latter part of the month brings you much closer to a special someone on a romantic level.
While a number of doors remained closed to you, there is one that is gradually opening: follow the lead offered by a lover or partner, and try to put your emotional wealth before your financial needs.
Astrologically this should be a great month for you with all kinds of nice things falling into place. I say should, because my gut feeling says you’re going to have to get out there looking for the lucky breaks, rather than waiting for them to drop into your lap.
Quite a busy and productive month but watch out for some tiredness clouding your judgement around the last week or ten days. The 6th – 9th augers well for new jobs and work routines, and the 14th – 22nd is a great time for romance, especially for mature single males.

CANCER (21st June - 22nd July) Not a lot of cash around at the moment, but you do have some good ideas, so don’t be afraid of trying new things. There is some tension in the wind around the 20th – 25th possibly caused by younger members of the family and arguments with partners.
LEO (23rd July - 23rd August) A busy time on the social scene with new friends being made along with reunions with old ones. A member of the opposite sex could upset your equilibrium with their jealousy and possessiveness, or maybe they have a point in thinking that you don’t have as much time for them as you do for some of your pals?
VIRGO (24th August - 22nd September) February seems to be a very pragmatic sort of month in which you’ll choose to concentrate on the practical aspects of life. The 5th 6th and 7th look good for unexpected financial gains, but I suspect there may be a lot of cash going out later in the month to finance some major purchase.
LIBRA (23rd September- 22nd October) A strange and moody month with more than one mystery needing to be solved. In response to conflicting advice, trust your own judgement: be careful if signing important
contracts and documents. Negative past memories get in the way of clear thinking, but there is some clarity cutting through on or around the 20th.
scorpio (23rd October - 21st November) Apart from a moody period between the 7th and 15th this is quite a good month for making a lot of progress where both jobs and relationships are concerned. There are special anniversaries being celebrated or created on or around the 20th and there may be news of a pregnancy or birth.
sagittarius (22nd November - 21st December) Rather a heart-warming month in all family affairs and a time in which relationships, both new ones and established ones, seem to flourish. Bit of red tape and bureaucracy to be sorted out midmonth and some unexpected travel opportunities during the last six or seven days.
Capricorn (22nd December - 19th January) Where money is concerned you’ll be robbing Peter to pay Paul, and as such, the whole aspect of banks and banking will come under review. One old account closed, one new account opened. Some travel aspects around the 6th – 10th may cause some frustration, but ultimately should be rewarding.

Krystal’s gems //MUSIC CORNER// //Miles kane// Playing at: York Barbican Date:17th March 2014 Genre: Indie Rock Song to look out for: Better than that. Miles is maybe better or less well known for being the former frontman of The Rascals as well as being part of the duo that is The Last Shadow Puppets with Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys). 2010 was a big Year for his solo career releasing the hit ‘Inhaler’ whilst supporting bands such as The Courteeners and Beady Eye. His success continued into 2013 where he released the album Don’t Forget Who You Are. Having seen Miles once before live, I cannot recommend him enough, he brings onto stage an infectious enthusiasm and is the ultimate crowd pleaser… I’ll see you there.

This month, Krystal tells us why being single on Valentine’s Day isn’t so bad...
(NOT SO)
Happy valentine’s day... off the school bus with balloons, cards and presents Valentine’s Day is just not my jam, so to speak. Due galore, I didn’t correct anyone as they gasped at my to the fact that I was born on the 15th of February, apparent popularity with the boys… my birthday always seems to be a day that gets pushed aside because of it. Granted Pushing all that aside, why do we If you love I’m a little bitter due to the fact I’ve even have Valentine’s Day? Is it only ever received two Valentine’s merely a commercial holiday to someone you Day cards; one off my mum and one sales of chocolate, bubble bath should tell them boost when I was eight years old (also and wine? If you love someone you potentially from my mum. Thanks every day, should tell them every day, not just mum! I love you too). The best on 14th February. When is the Singles not just on Valentine’s Day I ever had was when Appreciation Day? When you’re not 14th February. my birthday fell on the Saturday and in a relationship (and I’m speaking so all my lovely friends brought my from my own brand new experience presents and cards in to school on the Friday. As I got here) it suddenly seems like there are public displays
of affection everywhere around you. Every film you watch has a romance in it and every song talks about love. Come on, even in my own house there’s at least half a dozen mugs with love hearts on them! But there’s more to life than love, and if you’re single right now, don’t panic; it’s a great time to get to know yourself again and enjoy your own company. I’m sure it’ll be worth it Oh and let’s not forget the ‘I’m-morein-love-than-you-are competition’ that will be all over social networking sites. Everyone’s status will be “Look what I got on Valentine’s Day, everyone! Look how in love I am!” All those pictures of chocolates, rose petals, and expensive bottles of champagne basically translate into “my boyfriend loves me £42 more than yours does, blah blah blah.”
Being single around Valentine’s Day isn’t half as bad as I once thought it would be. I bought those stupid heels, I wore them, and no-one told me I looked daft. It was a very empowering moment for me. Make sure you get your empowering moment too this month.

Film Guide
The Book Thief Based on the incredibly popular and moving book by Markus Zusak, this film, set in World War Two Germany, follows Liesel from the age of nine when she is taken to live with a foster family. The film, like the book, is told from the perspective of Death, a character that visits Liesel 104
several times throughout her life when people close to her pass on. It sounds depressing, we know, but there are moments of humour and the story is truly gripping. Still, we recommend an episode of My Little Pony afterwards.

Jackson and Michael Keaton, which encouraged Howard to stop rocking in the corner with his hands over his ears since we told him about the remake of the 1980s classic. In case you're too young to remember the original, here's the story: multinational conglomerate OmniCorp are in the business of making robot drones for the military, and when cop Alex Murphy is critically injured they controversially transform him into part man, part robot as part of their plan to bring their drones to the home front. They're envisioning billions of dollars for their shareholders, but they don't count on the fact that there's a man inside the machine who is hell bent on pursuing justice. Expect dazzling special effects and plenty of fighting. And robots.
The LEGO Movie This is the one we've all been waiting for. With an all star cast (Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman and Will Ferrell will do very nicely for us, thanks) The LEGO Movie is the perfect date film if you're looking for something a little different. An ordinary LEGO minifigure is

Labor Day Despite having married someone with the surname Rock'n'roll, Kate Winslet tends to choose the films that she appears in wisely, so we've got a good feeling about this one. In her latest film she plays Adele, a single mum who is shopping with her teenage son when she encounters a man in distress who is bleeding badly. Against her better judgement, Adele takes the man to their home to offer him assistance. However, he turns out to be an escaped convict. Adele and her son learn the man's story, and as the police search narrows their options become more and more limited. Luckily for Kate, we don't think she had to film any freezing water scenes for hours on end this time.

Good view, great food
If you’re looking for a restaurant that offers the very finest York has to offer – in both tastes and surroundings – look no further than Bennett’s Bistro in High Petergate in the shadow of the Minster. Although the restaurant only opened in October last year, it has already secured a huge and enthusiastic following of foodies. After just two months of business Bennett’s had become the second highest rated York restaurant on the Trip Advisor website.
Here’swhatsomeoftheirhappycustomerssaid: This was one of the best meals that I’ve had in York for a long time. The service was excellent. We will be back!
Visit www.york.gov.uk for details on local
markets.
“After visiting the Minster we decided to find somewhere to eat and it was purely by chance that we chose Bennett’s. It is opposite the Minster in what is a fantastic location to sit and people watch while eating some amazing food. Service is very good and welcoming and the prices are reasonable. They have got it spot on, so go before everyone else discovers this little gem!” “We are regulars to York and this place is a hidden treasure. The staff are lovely and very welcoming. The food is great, the restaurant is very clean, and everything is very good value. All that and it has an amazing view....faultless. We will definitely be back.”

Home from home If you’re a regular of The Lord Collingwood pub in Upper Poppleton, and you’d heard they were having a refurbishment… relax. You’ll be relieved to know that the 300 year old hostelry has retained the original oak beams and roaring open fireplace, as well as the friendly staff and real ales by the barrel-load. The menu, which was already laden with wholesome, tasty, and home-cooked food, has been revised to include new taste sensations and a few old classics. You’ll also be wiping your brow with relief to hear that owners Gill and Ray are continuing to offer their ever popular Sunday lunches, with a choice of three roast meats. A comfy pub, idyllic surroundings, and cask ales freely flowing… what more could you ask for? n Visit www.thelordcollingwood.co.uk and call 337537.

If only there was a fairy godmother who could come along and take all of the hard work off your hands so that you could enjoy your own party... Well, in true Cinderella fashion, the caterers at Meet the Chef will work closely with you to plan your event, providing that extra bit of sparkle for your guests and giving you the time you deserve on the night to chat with your friends! Afternoon tea just got better There are lots of reasons why we’re drawn to Middlethorpe Hall and Spa on Bishopthorpe Road. First, the country house that dates from 1699 not only the Visit York restaurant of the year, but also the Hotel of the Ywear as well. Secondly, their spa experience is the stuff of dreams and it’s right on our doorstep. But it seems there is another reason why we must now urge you all to go there; the Piper Heidsieck Sublime Chocolate Afternoon Tea. If the thought of wasting away the afternoon sipping fine champagne and nibbling on delicious finger sandwiches is appealing, imagine how better it would be with the addition of chocolate and orange scones served with clotted cream, and a tasting plate of chocolate pastries and cakes. All this, along with the sumptuous surroundings of the hall, can be yours for just £29.90 per person. We’re all off now. Sorry if your magazine was late. n Call 641241.
