marathon madness Remember we told you that a group of us are going to run the 10K in August? Well, a couple of us have gone completely barmy and decided to run the marathon as well. Yep, the York Marathon. The one that’s happening in October. The rest of the team did try to reason with Helen and Rachel, but they’d already made their minds up. No matter that they only started training

properly a week ago. 26 miles? Easy peasy… Seriously though, we have every faith in Helen and Rach and we’d really love it if our readers could show their support too. Check our Facebook and Twitter pages to see a link to their Just Giving pages – just the price of a packet of crisps would make their day! Good luck with the training girls! bum note Now, at the risk of sounding crude* sales Gary’s derriere has had a lot of attention this month.

Did you spot any of April Fools’ gags in last month’s mag? Just so you know, Perm in a Can doesn’t exist, Clifford’s Tower will remain the same and Damien Hirst isn’t pickling eggs for art. And most importantly Betty’s is not being taken over by McDonald’s!

Apart from the wolf whistles he gets when out on his lunch break in Haxby, of course. Gaz had a hot date planned, and wanted to get rid of the fuzz on his back (he tells us that he was hoping to show off the tattoos on his back to the lucky lady in question – we’re sure that’s all it was). Gary doesn’t have the arms of Mr Tickle, so Kelly was nominated to make the area as smooth as a baby’s bottom. This was all well and good – a bit odd for any clients who happened to pop in, but then it is the Your Local Link office so this sort of thing is expected, really. Things started getting really weird, though,

when Gary decided that stopping at the bottom of his back wouldn’t be enough. Poor old Kelly was asked to go far and beyond the call of duty, and shave his posterior as well. We’re not sure whether he has any tattoos there, though – Kelly was trying to squint so that she could pretend it wasn’t happening. The things we do for the team, eh?

Choo choo(se your pencils) The keen-eyed amongst you may have noticed that our front cover is rather void any colour this month. That is because we’ve left the task up to you. Grab your felt tips, colouring pencils and paint brushes and slap a bit of magic onto the train image – if you do you could win a brilliant prize. The North York Moors Railway is this year celebrating 40 years of running stunning journeys through what is undoubtedly the most beautiful place on Earth. Find out more at www.nymr.co.uk.

Cop a load of this Always a highlight of the summer festive season, the Copmanthorpe Carnival returns this July – this year with a Viking theme! The Copmanthorpe Recreation Centre will once again be chock-a-block with music, attractions, games and more family fun than you can shake a stick at. Get the latest news about the carnival at www.copmanthorpe.org.uk/ carnival

You could be in with a chance of experiencing the traditional steam train ride by winning a family ticket. All you have to do is splash some colour on the cover (or download the image from www.yourlocallink.co.uk) and enter our competition. There are three age groups: under-fives (for which there are two family tickets up for grabs), five to ten (also two tickets) and one ticket for ten and above, which includes any grown-ups who fancy a go.

You and your family could be enjoying true VIP treatment at the carnival on 6th July, complete with a posh picnic hamper, free t-shirts and a full day of live music from the area’s top bands and performers. For a chance of winning one of five family VIP tickets all you have to do is answer this simple question:

Discover old York Readers, we do love you. In our hidden art trail feature in the April issue, we asked if anyone knew of any old signs like the Bile Beans one on Lord Mayor’s Walk. The lovely Rae Mould, member of the Association of Voluntary Guides to the City of York, rang us to mention something that she’d spotted. Next time you’re on Minstergate, look out for the lettering near the statue of Minerva. “The house used to belong to John Wolstenholme, who was in the printing profession, back in 1801,” says Rae. “The lettering dates back to then. It probably has been painted over since, but not for a long time.” Rae has been a guide for 25 years, and she says that she has noticed the condition of the lettering change over time. “25 years ago it used to be a shiny gold, but now it’s hard to see it,” she says. Rae adds that the lettering may have all but disappeared within the next couple of years, so make a point of taking a look before it’s too late. If you spot any more similar features around the city, get in touch using the contact details on page five.

Fun fact: Will you be celebrating Oak Apple Day? Never heard of it? It was a formal public holiday that was celebrated on 29th May in the 17th century to mark the restoration of the monarchy. Apparently there are areas of the country where the tradition is upheld, though we’re not sure we want to resurrect it. All you have to do really is wear sprigs of oak leaves or oak apples, but if you forget then your mates are well within their rights to beat you with nettles. Ouch.

you Wishwere

here...?

I’ve been spending a lot of time on TripAdvisor lately. Not that I’m planning a holiday or booking a hotel or anything (I wish) but just because it’s my favourite website in the world, next to awkwardfamilyphotos.com. Some of those reviews are pure comedy, if only for their sheer self importance. Seriously, who writes them? I don’t know about you, but when I get home from holiday the last thing on my mind is getting to a computer to share my views on the hotel with the rest of the world. Unless the chambermaid was an axe murderer or the swimming pool was filled with champagne, I’m happy to leave future guests to make

up their own minds. But looking at TripAdvisor, I seem to be in the minority.

How was your burger? Richard from Staffs, for instance, has penned no less than 164 reviews (at the time of writing – it’s possible by the time this comes out he might have topped the 1000 mark), most of them spectacularly dull. Who really needs to know that the Beefeater Grill in Solihull is ‘an average Beefeater’? What did he expect, to have his meal served by a unicorn? On a recent trip to Manchester, he managed five reviews in one day. I’m guessing he found some time for sightseeing, too. Or perhaps he was

too busy searching for WiFi so he could tell the world that his burger in the Trafford Centre Food Court was ‘just okay’. Online reviews also show what a nation of moaners we are. I once stayed at a hotel in London where a reviewer complained on TripAdvisor that the bathroom was ‘too clean’. Apparently, the fresh smell gave her a headache. Presumably she prefers her plugholes with hair in them, too.

Sharing is scaring I’m not saying we shouldn’t be able to complain. If your new iron was a waste of money, or you’ve just had the holiday from hell, then of course it’s great if you can warn other people not to make the same mistake. But everyone has a different opinion, and

Online reviews have taken a lot of the fun out of life, too. Back in the old days, you’d book a hotel or a restaurant not really knowing what you were going to get. Sometimes you’d uncover a hidden gem, and sometimes you’d end up somewhere that made the Bates Motel look hospitable. But at least you’d have a good story to tell afterwards. But that’s all changed now. Thanks to the wonders of the web, you can thoroughly research every aspect of your trip before you go. You can find out how your hotel rates, and which are the best rooms to book. You can browse restaurant menus online, read reviews of visitor attractions and even print out maps so you can plan your route. Yes, it’s all terrifically organised. But after all that, what’s the point of going? Unless, of course, it’s to write up your review for TripAdvisor…

According to

the best of york

if you took all those reviews seriously you would never eat out, see another movie or buy another electrical product ever again.

Donna...

There’s no better barometer on what’s hot and what’s not than our Donna. Here, she shares her thoughts on what’s in or out in her own unique style!

Hot… Midlife crises Cut off that ponytail, gentlemen, and step away from the sports car. According to a new report, midlife crises happening in our 60s now, not in our 40s. So stand by for a rush of Harley-riding Hells Grannies coming to a street corner near you…

Not… Movie remakes Following in the footsteps of Total Recall, Annie and Dirty Dancing, there are now plans to remake the cult movie Point Break. Why do Hollywood producers have to do this? I can’t imagine there’s a shortage of screenplays out there. Or perhaps it’s just a shortage of imagination…

Horoscopes May 2013

Starsign of the month... Taurus (20th April - 20th May)

here are a few famous faces you share your sign with

by James Christie n For details of private readings phone 07884 107100 or 01423 339770 Email: jcp@magepublishing.co.uk

Everyone is telling you to be patient, but there’s a wicked little voice inside your head telling you to do it now. Whatever it is you want to do, I wish you’d get on with it because then at least the rest of us would know what you were doing. As it is, we’re all sitting on the sidelines and the suspense is getting us down. Of course, it would help enormously if you knew exactly what you wanted – although I think you’re quite sure about what it is you don’t want. You do have some wonderful dreams and ambitions, but in your heart of hearts (short of winning several million pounds on the lottery) you know they are always going to be elusive. Okay, so your common sense tells you you’re never going to own a brand new Ferrari or buy that wonderful ten-bedroom mansion near Malaga, so what you have to do is this: you have to find an alternative set of targets and ambitions that are achievable, and then go at them systematically until they start falling into place. Even if they don’t, at least you can say “I tried my hardest.” And that, believe it or not, may be worth a damn sight more than you think!

(21st May - 20th June)

(21st June - 22nd July)

(23rd July - 23rd August)

(24th August - 22nd September)

Your personal plans and the powers of fate will be on a divergent course throughout the period; some doors close while others open. Not the best time to try igniting old flames, even though there may be a very obvious opportunity for you to do this.

House moves and changes of address are in the wind for some, while others will content themselves with a major spring clean. You’re in the mood for uncluttering your life and finding some space, which suggests you may be declining more invitations than you accept.

Some bright travel opportunities and an awareness that a number of restrictions are now falling by the wayside. You should be feeling free and extremely confident. This mood will enhance your social life and certainly do a lot to improve your love life.

There are legal or bureaucratic energies around you, but nothing dangerous or threatening. Papers and contracts are to be signed, more probably connected with business rather than the home. A good time to sort out old debts.

14

(23rd September - 22nd October) Big decisions loom at this time and your heart will be in conflict with your head. Not a good time to deal with old flames and lost loves, but maybe you have no choice. At least, with some effort, you should come to recognise that there are some good times ahead.

Scorpio (23rd October - 21st November) News of births and pregnancies, and very possibly the birth of some new work routines and career opportunities. Travel aspects link with love affairs and reconnect you with some key players from your past. You’ll be spending money on confidence boosters, and there’s no harm in that.

Sagittarius (22nd November - 21st December) Your own plans go a little awry as you find yourself having to deal with someone else’s problems. It may be a bit inconvenient, but you will be successful in this quest. Possibly a time when you have to deal with problems involving pets.

Capricorn (22nd December - 19th January) If someone comes to you with a good idea, then, unless you’ve got a better one of your own, you’re well advised to follow where someone else is eager to lead. If you do have

a better idea, make sure your voice is heard because other people will be prepared to follow you.

the best of york

Libra

Aquarius (20th January - 18th February) Homecomings, reunions and parties: just three boosts to a burgeoning new social life. Very good work energies, but don’t bite off more than you can chew. Also, monitor health conditions and physical energy levels, and don’t push yourself any harder than you have to.

Pisces (19th February - 20th March) A great month for you. There are some new romantic interests and it’s a time for meeting up with people from your distant past. Money spent on travel is money well spent, as is any cash spent on leisure and pleasure pursuits. You are making a good investment in creating a host of marvellous memories for the future.

Aries (21st March - 19th April) A good money month with entrepreneurial ladies scoring the highest points. Health situations may have some influence over career directions and work routines, but it may well be that a higher spiritual authority is doing you a favour.

If we could refer you to our Marc h issue, we were once of the ignorant view that ukeleles were just little guitars. We’ve been educated now, however, and have learned that they’re actually a lot of fun – so much so, in fact, that the North York Ukelele Group is now offering beginner classes and jam sessions. The group will also be performing at 1940s dance night Sentimental Journey at Haxby Memorial Hall on 8th June, which will feature nostalgic mus ic and a variety of performers. n Call 07931 470150.

NEW! GET INVOLVED

Make a racket Become a

chocolate

connoisseur

This pretty much sounds like our dream role in life, so we’re really excited for the Connoisseur Club taking place bimonthly at York’s Chocolate Story. A rolling programme of demonstrations, workshops and talks will take place throughout the year, with the next cocoa-inspired event – a chocolate cocktail making session, no less – taking place on 4th June from 7pm.

We think we’ve died and gone to heaven. Where everything is made from chocolate, incidentally. The good folk at York’s Chocolate Story are hoping that the events will prove popular enough to run the events on a monthly basis next year. Anyone for tennis? The Heworth Tennis Club on East Parade are offering fitness training sessions for those wanting to get fit and improve their ball skills. The sessions will run on Tuesday evenings from 7-8pm and Saturday mornings from 9.30am-10.30am, and promise to improve your general cardio fitness and speed around the tennis court. If you’re a little more Ann Widdecombe than Anna Kournikova, the club will offer free first time taster sessions, and players of all standards will benefit from a range of drills and games. You don’t have to be a member to take part, just a team player who’s keen to get fit in a small and affordable venue. n Call Erica on 762289.

Sink or swim Supporters of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution are seeking out friendly folk to help raise money for the cause. The small, friendly group get together for fundraising events such as coffee mornings and raffles, and welcome all new recruits to help raise money for the institution. You can meet the group at York Hospital, where they frequently have a table selling handmade knitwear, books, games and puzzles. The next get-together will be a coffee morning on 11th May at Haxby Memorial Hall from 10am-12pm. n For more information phone Sue on 491133 or Anthea on 490225.

Once again the skies over Haxby and Wigginton will be clear of the black insidious forms of the graveyard’s favourite winged visitor. Crows had better clear off to Poppleton, because between 4th-6th May the Scarecrow Festival will return. In previous years residents and visitors alike have been wowed by impressive interpretations of Harry Potter, Monsters Inc. and Wallace and Gromit – all in statuesque, crowshooing form. This year promises to be just as amazing and will raise funds for local worthwhile causes.

Hot Topic Students from The Mount School have cause to celebrate thanks to getting through to the finals of a national debating competition. The ‘Debating Matters’ competition, as organised by the Institute of Ideas, saw the ladies fight off fierce competition at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and make their way through to the national finals, which will take place in London this June. The contestants had also recently qualified for the finals of the Rotary Club ‘Youth Speaks’ public speaking competition, which took place at Hull University in April. The ladies, Elspeth Foster-Lil, Alice Grierson, Holly Gardiner and Victoria Ellis are looking forward to the national finals, which will be held at the University College of London before the final debate at the Royal Society of Medicine. Art attack We were thrilled to hear that our favourite local artist, Tony Brook, has gained notoriety across the pond! A former York resident who now lives in Canada had been receiving Tony’s calendars as Christmas presents, and contacted the artist with a request to purchase five pieces of original artwork. The pieces depict all four bars - Micklegate, Monk Bar, Bootham and Walmgate – and Tony says that the fifth is a particular favourite of his.

“It depicts the Bar Walls with kids sledding in the snow,” says Tony. “I painted it from how I remember that particular section of walls at Christmas time when I was a child myself.” The paintings are now in their new home in Canada. You can see some of Tony’s artwork in our ebook, The Figure Stepped Out: visit www.amazon. co.uk and search for The Figure Stepped Out.

Members of the public felt the love recently as they embraced a local ‘Hug A Hound’ event in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. York St John University welcomed the pups to their campus and delighted in giving them a hug at the event, organised by admissions officer Lisa Whiffin. The event managed to raise £197 in just two hours, raising Lisa’s fundraising total to a fantastic £1,398. Lisa, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2003, organised the event to support her husband Mark. The ‘52-mile man’ is currently training to run two marathons just eight days apart, and Lisa has come up with a wealth of activities to get closer to their £2,000 fundraising goal. “I can’t run with Mark, so I’ve been doing my best to organise fundraising activities,” says Lisa. “Our target is getting closer – I just need to come up with another hair-brained idea to close the deal!”

Building the future If you were worried that every young person these days seems only to be bothered with getting jobs in the media, designer websites and showing off on TV, think again. It seems that York College, the stalwart provider of education on Sim Balk Lane, has been heavily investing in the future with their construction courses. An award ceremony held at the college recently celebrated the successes of students taking part in carpentry, joinery, brickwork, stonemasonry and other ‘hands-on’ courses. Kevin Clancy, Head of Construction at York College, congratulated the students on all their hard work, which will “pay dividends when they become the future professionals within the construction industry.” n Visit www.yorkcollege.ac.uk

Growing success The Bootham Stray Allotments Association are celebrating this year with their grand summer event on 23rd June. The event will showcase the association’s recent achievements in a two-year project to regenerate the plots. City of York Council partnered up with the association in 2011 and helped to secure £52,000 in funding from the Big Lottery Fund. The site, which had suffered from frequent vandalism, has been given a new lease of life in the form of improved drainage and heightened security. n To find out more, visit www.boothamstrayallotments.co.uk

Go West

Just before it opened to the public, our intrepid reporter Howard got inside West Offices, the new City of York Council Customer Centre and Headquarters on Station Rise, and discovered what’s in store. The building, which was originally built to house the city’s first major railway station in 1840, has had a massive makeover and will act as a one-stop-shop for all City of York Council services. Instead of having to be directed to a number of offices and departments across York, residents will be able to get all their questions answered and needs fulfilled under one (very interesting) roof.

Grand designs The approach to the main entrance of West Offices is pretty spectacular.

24

The Victorian building, which once played host to Queen Victoria, has been stunningly refurbished and makes for a very grand entrance. Through the automatic doors and into the foyer the customer (which is how the Council now refer to us) is brought slap-bang up to date with the contrasting modern facilities. We are given the choice of either speaking to a member of staff, or interacting with a computer. The latter involves a touch screen interface that issues a ticket and directs the visitor to a waiting area.

Easy for the smartphone generation to navigate, but I get the impression that members of staff will be called upon more than they might imagine. Once your number has been called (via a futuristic announcement over the loud speakers) you are invited either to one of the ergonomic desks beneath the spacious atrium, or to a private consultation room around the edge of the space. The new and fresh environment is contained on three sides by the original station building, the one-time exterior walls of which are still visible.

West Offices Facilities • All Council departments under one roof. • Level access to all areas of the building. • Toilets & baby changing facilities. • Free Wi-Fi. • A new space for public art. • A café.

Transparency I grabbed a few minutes with Paul Edmondson-Jones, Director of Public Health, who commented favourably on how the new open-plan design of the offices would help the Council to work more efficiently. “It’s very public and everyone is on display, both to customers and to each other. I think that is a very positive thing. It will encourage people to work more closely together and obviously improve communication. All this will eventually benefit residents.” The openness was certainly evident

the best of york

as I wandered around the building, and I learnt that even high-flyers like Kersten England, the Chief Executive, no longer have an office. Council workers must bring their oven gloves to work, as it’s a hot-desk policy. But it isn’t just the council that have moved into the impressive new structure. West Offices will also be home to the Police, NHS Vale of York, the Citizens Advice Bureau and other partners. Plus there are meeting rooms available to hire, including the renovated board room of legendary rail tycoon George Hudson. A visit to West Offices won’t just be a chance to speak to the council, but also a fantastic opportunity to get into a building that has played an important role in the history of the city. It may take a while for many people to get used to certain aspects, especially

the touch screen interface and ticket number announcement, but I think everyone will soon realise the usefulness of having everything in one place. Plus, it looks cool, and there’s a café. Everyone’s a winner.

Need something? Visit the new West Offices on Station Rise (opposite The Cedar Court Grand Hotel) Monday to Friday, 8.30am -5.30pm. Alternatively call 551550 or email ycc@york.gov.uk What do you think? Got an opinion about the new Council headquarters? Happy Birthday,

HaxBy

parish!

You’ll probably know that our little office – also known as Sarah’s outhouse – is situated in Haxby. You’ll also probably know that we love a party. So, the news that our village is celebrating a milestone year as a parish – and more importantly, that there will be lots of celebrating going on – was music to our ears. However, we’re ashamed to say we don’t know as much about our heritage as we should. What is this Haxby 150 thing really all about? Luckily Ian Strong, Secretary of the parochial Church Council and co-organiser of the celebrations, knows much more than we do, and kindly helped to explain. "Although Haxby is a really independent place, for hundreds of years it was part of Strensall Parish and only got its own parish 150 years ago,” says Ian. “It

e of 150, we take As the village’s parish reaches the grand old ag ebrations. cel ing com up the d an y xb Ha of y tor his the a look at

surprised us at St Mary's Church to find that when the deed was done in 1863 nobody seemed to take much notice, in spite of the fact that Haxby people had been asking for this separation for a long time.” The Church Council decided to make amends for the 150th anniversary with a host of events to mark the occasion. “Perhaps the most important message to get across is that this celebration is for everyone in Haxby, not just the church,” Ian adds. “The civil parish that the Town Council is based upon was also created in 1863, and Haxby Town Council is very much involved.”

Fast fact:

The name Haxby originated with the Vikings, and means farmstead or village of man named Hákr.

History corner

Haxby Parish may be 150 years old, but the location has been called home for much longer than that. The village used to be part of the Royal Forest of Galtres and dates back as far as the ninth century, when it was a Viking settlement. By the 13th century, the village was divided between two parishes: Driffield and Strensall. Then, in the 16th century, Haxby belonged completely to Strensall, which remained the case until the 19th century. According to Ian, Haxby folk appear to have had a fair amount of independence despite not having their own parish, though there were some problems. “Until 1328, when the burial ground in Haxby was dedicated, Haxby people had to travel to Strensall to bury their dead,” explains

Ian. “The journey meant crossing the river Foss which was often flooded and sometimes impassable. There is a famous story told of the loss of a body into the Foss, which may have been one of a number of incidents that moved the inhabitants to demand their own burial ground.” Two churches and more petitioning later, and Haxby was declared a separate parish from Strensall on 12th September 1863, or what we’re going to declare from this day forward be known as Haxby Independence Day. Ian adds that despite the villagers seeming to carry on with life as usual, the separation was key for Haxby’s growing and changing community. “It set a benchmark for the development over the years, which has made Haxby what it is today,” says Ian.

By you, for you If you thought the only place you can make a musical request is in a hotel lobby, think again. The York Guildhall Orchestra, one of the leading orchestral ensembles in the north of England, are calling out to their audiences, “any requests?” Well, they are doing it in a slightly more dignified manner, asking those who have attended previous concerts at the York Barbican to suggest future pieces of music. On 16th May the orchestra will present a lively performance including the works suggested by audience members such as Four Sea Interludes from Britten’s Peter Grimes and España by Chabrier. n Enjoy it for yourself at The Barbican by calling 0844 8542757.

Goddard’s, the National Trust property on Tadcaster Road that was once home to chocolate royalty Noel Terry, is a beautiful place to visit. the house until 6th May, displaying stark and vibrant photographs that were taken immediately after the Terry’s factory was closed in 2005. FESTIVAL UPDATE! Who needs Glastonbury when you’ve got the Galtres Festival right on your doorstep? New for 2013 the festival will be taking place at Duncombe Park near Helmsley, in beautiful riverside parklands next to the stately home. But for those who may be put off from the usual festival fare, trudging through mud back to a half collapsed and draughty tent, see here. Glamping – glam camping – will be available during the festival weekend of 23rd-25th August, where guests will be put up in comfortable bell tents and tipis. If roughing it just isn’t for you and your family, glamping at the Galtres Festival might be the solution for a special weekend under the stars.

Loads of places in York will be staying open after closing time, allowing visitors to see their favourite museums in a new (and reduced) light. A highlight that we are particularly looking forward to is a screening of the film Good Bye Lenin in the York Cold War Bunker, preceded by a night-time tour of the bunker itself. n For other night-time fun in York, visit www.culture24.org.uk

Terry’s site set for redevelopment After producing the final York-made Chocolate Orange in 2005, the iconic Terry’s factory on Bishopthorpe Road has been vacant. Finally it seems that repurposing may have arrived, following the news that City of York Council has approved the sale of the site to Henry Boot Developments. The 27 acre site, which once played host to the world-renowned chocolate works, will be redeveloped into flats, offices, retail units and possibly even a hotel. The project, which is set to begin this summer, will provide 200 construction jobs.

Who’s your hero? As part of a new series, we look at who inspires some of our business gurus. Next up, our columnist Sharon Moore from face etc… medispa. The moment I was asked for a contribution towards the ‘Business Heroes’ feature, one name immediately sprang to mind: Julian Richer. As the founder and 100% shareholder of Richer Sounds, the UK’s largest Hi-Fi retailer, Julian richer will be a familiar name to many. His entrepreneurialism is widely admired; having opened his first branch of Richer Sounds in 1978 aged just 19, with no funds and little support, Julian has since grown the venture into one of the UK's most successful retail operations. Richer Sounds even boasts an entry in the Guinness Book of Records as achieving the world's highest sales per square foot of retail space. Which is all pretty impressive stuff, you have to admit. But far more impressive and commendable than all of this – and much lesser known – is that Julian gives the largest percentage of his business’ profits to charity of any company. Richer Sounds has also been judged as the Best British Company to work for by The Sunday Times and received the Best Retailer Award from Which? for the last two consecutive years. In short, Julian Richer is not only a huge financial success, but an exceptionally brilliant employer, a customer-centric retailer and a philanthropic human being. Plus he has made Yorkshire his home of choice. A true business hero in my book! n Check out Sharon’s column on page 43

Sport report We don’t know that much about sport – the closest we get to exercise is the daily boxing over the biscuit tin at elevenses – but luckily we know a bloke who does. He tells us about the hottest news in the world of sport in words we can understand, and makes it funny too! Thank you, Dan Tait – here is his column…

Footy fight They say a week is a long time in football, but who would have thought a year on from York City’s double winning Wembley success they would be down the wrong end of the Football League’s basement division? At the time of writing, York City were locked in a battle with six other teams to survive. The season has been on the whole compulsive viewing but with a lot of swearing in the aftermath (following defeats); or how most women describe an episode of Geordie Shore. In a strange sort of way the relegation dog fight brought everyone together again to rally Nigel Worthington’s men over the finish

34

Pity the fool Just like Your Local Link’s April fun with the news that McDonald’s had bought out Betty’s, one of the best April Fools’ jokes I saw (and fell for) was the announcement from the makers of the popular ‘Football Manager’ game who revealed they were releasing a special edition ‘Football Manager 1888’. This advertised features such as ‘no substitutions, no offside rule and losing players to the army’. As an addict of the current version I was looking forward to playing it. When I say addict, my addiction is nothing compared to a recent radio discussion I heard about the book ‘Football Manager ruined my life’ which led to one guy saying his wife came home from work to find him in his pants, yet with a spruced up suit on top. His excuse? He wanted to look the part for his Football Manager profile photo. Another guy managed all the way to the 2050/51 season where Wayne Rooney was Manchester United manager. Closer to home, a current York City supporter has a computer corner specifically for playing the game, which, following a succession of last minute defeats that resulted in smashing fists against the wall, now resembles a scene from Shawshank Redemption.

That’s not cricket… I recently went to the first game of the new cricket season. Whose idea was it to start in April? It wasn’t the best of starts for newly promoted Yorkshire who got hammered by over an innings by Sussex. At one point they were four wickets down for 18 runs and ‘Extras’ was the top scorer! When Johnny Bairstow and Gary Ballance were in bat together they were having a discussion between the wicket, and I asked my granddad what he thought they were saying. He replied: “Well if you get hundred and I get hundred we are in this game!” Sadly, even if that was the conversation, that didn’t happen and the only highlights were the scoreboard announcing they were selling ‘Chichen soup’ for lunch and then the players going off for ‘bad light’ at half past five.

Where York City have struggled to stay in their division, their rugby league counterparts have started to find their stride with consecutive home wins over Featherstone 24-18 and Dewsbury Rams 29-20. These results pushed the Knights up to sixth place in the standings, which even led to Manager Chris Thorman getting linked to top jobs such as the Castleford Manager.

Pocket rocket Pocklington Rocket Harry Matthews, who I mentioned in my last column, came up short once again in his latest title fight, losing on points to Lee Markham in Grays, Essex. Having watched the fight on EuroSport, there is no doubt that Harry deserved a closer decision than the one he got that night, but his quest for title success goes on. After reuniting with York trainer Glenn Banks, Harry looked in top condition and threw much more punches than his opponent, but perhaps the referee judged it on quality rather than quantity. Once again, Matthews proved himself to be extremely durable as he completed his fifth ten rounder. With his career now at a crossroads, it will be interesting to see how the local fighter responds to his latest setback.

IRISNotes Executive 2. Typing – what a pain in the backside. Having to press buttons to make words appear is dull! Remember the good old days, when words were made by the scribbling of a pen on paper? Well those days are back thanks to the IRISNotes Executive 2. This clever little gadget is made up of sleek looking pen and tiny black sensor. Place the sensor on the top of your notebook page, write your message with the pen and the words will be magically scanned and downloaded to your computer, appearing as typed text. A great way of recording and saving handwritten notes, we had some fun with it, trying to catch it out by illegibly scribbling rude words. Check out our video at www.yourlocallink.co.uk.

Park life

The next time you pull up at Monks Cross or Clifton Moor, pay attention to the car next to you. According to www.StressFreeAirportParking.com, who carried out research on 8000 cars, people who drive Vauxhall Vectras are the worst parkers in Britain – particularly if the car is black. It seems that Audi drivers are also pretty poor at their parallels and surprisingly the smaller the car, the shoddier the parking. Drivers of Land Rovers and other 4X4 vehicles come out on top. We’ve previously been told to steer clear of white van man on the motorway, but it seems it’s his silver friend we should be wary of parking next to, as silver Ford Transits scored second on the worst offenders list.

Empowering Keen to make the change to an electric car, but worried about running out of juice on the opposite side of the city? Fear no more dear eco warriors, as York is set to become the first city in the UK to install a network of pay-as-you-go charging points for electric vehicles. The network, installed by City of York Council, will make it possible for those forward-thinking amongst us to charge their ‘leccy cars at Park and Ride and Council-owned car parks. What’s more, electricity can be paid for via a pay-and-go system, meaning you can just roll up, plug in and not be given a nasty ‘charge’. n Visit www.itravelyork.info Preparing to Départ We’re all looking forward to next year’s Tour de France, particularly as the Grand Départ will be winding its way through our beautiful city. It seems that York is already reaping the benefits of hosting the start of the world’s biggest cycle race, with the recent news that funding has been approved to improve transport access to the city. The Askham Bar Park and Ride is set to be improved, as well as the roundabout where the A59 meets the A1237. There will also be a new Park and Ride developed on the A59 near Poppleton. n Visit www.york.gov.uk/parkandiride

Tony can lay claim to not only the accolade of Ford Apprentice of the Year 2002, but also to having specialised knowledge in repair, maintenance and engine diagnostics. n His high standards and customer safety care are paramount to the business, so if your motor is needing a pamper, call 693618.

CAR MAINTENANCE TIPS

Wheely good tips (sorry!)

Planning a summer road trip in the next couple of months? Follow our advice and keep your motor purring until autumn. • Summer heat affects your tyre pressure. Check your car’s manual to ensure the tires are correctly inflated. If in doubt, ask your garage. • Wash the underside of your car. After a long winter of driving over salted roads, the salt can get caked on the undercarriage and erode the metal. Use a hose or get a professional clean. • Check for leaks and cracks in the pipes around your radiator. If your radiator was to conk out during a hot day on the M1, you’d soon have to call for recovery.

• Prepare for rain. We know, not something you really want to think about as the sun beats down, but summer is notorious for sudden intense rainstorms. Check that your wipers are in a good condition, and top up the wiper fluid.

ASK THE EXPERT

Facefacts Meet our new beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, who is on hand to answer all of your beauty dilemmas! This month, she gives us the lowdown on laser treatment.

Q.

What is a laser and how does it remove hair? A laser is a high-energy beam of light that can transfer its energy through the skin to the pigment contained in the hair shaft, the hair follicle or root with a single specific wavelength of light generated by the laser. This energy heats up the base of the hair follicle, which causes damage to the cells that produce hair growth. If enough damage is done, this will prevent the hair from growing any further. The most effective phase is during what is known as the anagen or ‘active’ phase of hair growth. The anagen phase is when new hairs start to grow.

Enjoy 50% off

Laser Hair Removal packages at Skin Doctor York as an introductory offer for Your Local Link readers!

Q.

Laser vs Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), what’s the difference? A laser is an intensely concentrated beam of light. The energy/wavelength is extremely focused rather than diffused so it is very precise, offering more powerful, accurate results. During an initial consultation the laser is carefully tuned to your individual skin and hair type, ensuring the best possible results on all skin shades and types. IPL is far less effective

than laser hair removal. The energy is produced by a lamp, a little like a light bulb, and produces hundreds of light waves, meaning that it is more diffused and so less powerful. Skin Doctor are one of the first clinics to introduce the Lumenis Duet System to the UK. A huge success in America, the Duet leverages the technology that is globally recognized as the gold standard for laser hair removal. The new duet has two handpieces: one for small or bony areas such as the top lip or around the ankle, and a bigger handpiece to cover larger areas. The Duet requires no messy gels or topical anaesthetic and is suitable for all skin types.

Q.

How many sessions will I need? Most people require between six and eight sessions, four-six weeks apart for permanent hair reduction. Results can vary in different skin types but generally those with fair skin and the dark hair achieve the best results.

Spring’s arrival means the shedding of winter clothing and dull winter skin. Create your own spring awakening by using a body brush to remove dead skin cells. The technique causes a burst in cell renewal, increases circulation and lymph flow and gives you super smooth skin! Kuki recommend mixing the Dermalogica range of Hydro-Active Mineral Salts with two pumps of Dermalogica Stress Relief Treatment Oil. Follow with a generous layer of Body Hydrating Cream to trap in vital moisture, and add an aromatherapeutic, intensely-moisturising boost by blending with Stress Relief Treatment Oil.

NEW Product Launch to Kuki Spa. Introducing the Mii makeup by Gerrard International known for their Jessica nails.

New Products Matrix will expand its popular Biolage brand this month, with the introduction of Biolage Advanced Fiberstrong and Biolage Advanced Keratindose, two prescriptive formulas for weak, fragile hair and over-processed hair. The Intra-Cylane and bamboo formula conditions the cuticle and strengthens weakened hair. Intra-Cylane is a patented molecule that fills gaps in the outer cuticle caused by brushing, thermal styling tools, UV exposure and daily stress. Bamboo is a botanical that regenerates itself faster than other plants or trees, and provides strength and flexibility. Kuki recently ran an event on the Biolage Advanced Fiberstrong for weak and fragile hair for customers to see the difference for themselves. Clients watched the Biolage Advanced Fiberstrong collection being applied and had the opportunity to feel the massive difference from before and after the demonstration. Many thanks to the ladies who attended and to the volunteers on the evening for being superb models!

Inspired by the wants and wishes of thousands of beauty spa and salon devotees, as well as a team of beauty experts, Mii launched in 2011. Taking the variety of the department store to the comfort of your salon, the range is easy to choose, easy to use and easy to understand; to encourage you to create a look that is uniquely, completely, unmistakably you. With skin loving formulas, thirteen tailored brushes as well as a 100% pure mineral line, Mii has set its sights on ensuring that you are filled with the confidence that every makeup decision will be the right one. animal planet: The world is going mad for tee-shirts with close-up photos of animals’ faces emblazoned on them. Think hamsters, bats (particularly the upside-down bat variety as favoured by our Krystal – like the one pictured) and wolves. If you’re more into jewellery, embrace the trend by adorning your neck with a pretty animal-shaped pendant instead. You’ll win some quirky points with this toucan necklace from Accessorize, pictured above. We see a pattern here… The patterned trousers trend was big last summer, and it’s set to make a mark on 2013 too. Make sure that you team your trews with a simple top. Nude heels would complete the outfit perfectly for the office, or gladiator sandals would make for an edgy evening look.

Something more permanent No, we’re not talking about the pretend perm in a can product which you may have fallen for in last month’s issue (sorry if we got you, by the way…) but real perms. Apparently the hairstyle which reached its peak in popularity in the 1980s has rolled back into fashion, though you might not want to go for the bubble perm that your mum or nana might have sported. Opt for a looser curl that will look a lot more natural, and will save you lots of time faffing with your locks in the morning.

We’re with the band: Fan of The Ramones? Love Nirvana? Express your adoration of your favourite rock gods on a tee-shirt – the more retro, the better. These go fantastically well with skinny jeans and boots, and will transform you from geek to chic in an instant. If you’re going for rock, ditch the 1D top (yes Helen Birley, we’re talking to you!)

Did you ever read the phrase ‘Michelin Man chic’ in Vogue magazine? No, neither did we. Pray tell us, then, why puffy nylon coats (you know, the type that Bianca in Eastenders wears – we can’t use the brand name in case they tell us off) have surged in popularity in recent years? There’s a particular sort that look rather a lot like bin bags, and we just can’t fathom why these would ever be thought to look good, unless the buyer was drunk when they bought it.

Zippy, you aren’t really very clever Lads, we know that the weather is getting warmer (everyone cross your fingers). And yes, we did say shorts are hot in last month’s issue. But please – no zip off trousers. They may appeal to your gadgetloving side, but they are hideous, especially when you whip off the bottom halves halfway through fish and chips in Scarborough – no, you don’t look even remotely like one of the Chippendales. Do us a favour and banish them to the back of the wardrobe, or even better – the bin.

bareMinerals READY SPF 20 Foundation We heard amazing things about the bareMinerals products, so we had to try them out for ourselves. Being die-hard fans of liquid foundation, we expected that one in solid form wouldn’t provide good enough coverage. We were proved well and truly wrong. The application takes a bit of practice, but if even our Nic can manage to apply it without looking patchy, then anyone can (regular readers will remember her hilarious attempt at curling her hair – visit YouTube.com and search Locallinkyork to see for yourself). What’s more, the range offers 20 different shades and even offers benefits for your skin, locking in hydration to help keep skin soft and smooth, and it doesn’t all slide off your face by the end of the day. We love. £25 Available at Debenhams on Davygate or Fenwicks on Coppergate. Visit www.bareminerals.co.uk

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Dark Chocolate & Cherry Tinted Lip Balm, SPF 15 We’ve always been a fan of the Palmer’s cocoa butter range in the office, so we were only too happy to test out one of their lip balms. As with their other products, the smell is divine – it was all we could do not to bite a chunk off – and the balm does leave your lips feeling soft and smooth. However, be warned – we loved the scent so much that we ended up slathering on a little too much, and as it’s tinted it can end up making your lips look more gunky than gorgeous. Use sparingly, a little goes a long way! £1.99 Superdrug, Goodramgate www.superdrug.com

Get moving… Are you becoming bored with the daily jog? Fancy trying something different? Getting fit can be fun – heck, with Zumba it’s basically a party. But it’s no fun turning up to a party to find that you’re the only one there. Make a note, then, that Zumba Fitness have a new venue for their Thursday class, which will take place at the Melbourne Centre on Fishergate from 6.45-7.45pm. Don’t worry about your fitness level, either – Zumba is designed so that everyone can groove along at their own pace. It’s easy to follow and a fantastic calorie burner, but most of all it’s a great laugh. The Latin-inspired music and moves will mean that you won’t even realise that you’re working out. It’s a great place to meet new people, too. Join the party! Zumba Fitness also have classes that take place from 6.45-7.45pm on Tuesdays at Burnholme Community College and on Wednesdays at St Oswalds Church Hall. Knowledge saves lives May welcomes the first ever Viral Meningitis Week, a chance to get acquainted with the disease’s symptoms and bust some of the myths surrounding it. Many people still believe that meningitis only affects baby and toddlers, but actually the disease afflicts just as many adults. Best foot forward How do you get to work? If you’re one of the thousands of people in York who drive, catch the bus or hop on a train, consider this; do you really need to? Sure, if you work in London, then yes you do have to. But if like many of us your place of business is within the city, why not get involved with Walk to Work Week, from 13th-17th May? and they’re off… It’s racing season again! York Racecourse’s meetings kick off on 17th May with the Dante festival. We’ve rounded up the latest style for ladies’ day. Be a lady Racing season is the perfect excuse to dress up, and this year racing fashions are not so much defined by trends as they are by classic elegance. Ditch the mini skirts for longer, calf-skimming hemlines. If you’re desperate to be bang on trend, monochrome is effortlessly classy, as is delicate machine-made lace. Sling the dresses and consider wearing separates, i.e. skirts and pretty tops, which can be recycled again for daywear – beautiful and practical. Marvellous!

Have a good hair day How you wear your hair at the races really depends on your headwear. If you want to accommodate a hat or fascinator, try a soft, sleek ponytail with a side parting, which will provide an understated look and show off your accessories. Make sure not a hair is out of place – you can achieve this with John Frieda Frizz Ease Serum, which is a favourite among us fuzzy-haired types in the office!

Doctor,

doctor

Having taken Leeds by storm and become a favourite of soap stars, the Skin Doctor team have ventured further north to bring their expertise to the good people of York.

Aesthetic Therapists Debra Husband, Heather Richardson and Lauren Sankey, with Dr Saleena Zimri and Dr Khan, at the new Skin Doctor clinic.

When you’re having an aesthetic surgical procedure done, it’s vital to have a qualified practitioner who you can trust doing the job – especially after the Royal College of Surgeons recently said that administering Botox should be left to qualified doctors. Luckily for us Yorkies, a doctor-led beauty clinic has arrived in our city. Meet the team from Skin Doctor: your new beauty specialists. Ask the experts Having first launched in Leeds in 2004, the team have now set up a clinic on Blossom Street. Treatments range from facials and non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, such

as mole removal. “You have the best of both worlds,” says Dr Saleena Zimri, “because it’s a combination of a salon and a medical clinic. The back-up of a doctor-led programme for surgical procedures provides real peace of mind.” Expertise is something that is present in abundance at Skin Doctor’s York clinic, with the doctors boasting a combined 30 years of experience in general surgery, general practice and dermatology. What’s more, the Aesthetic Therapists are trained in lasering and offer know-how in problematic skin, so the team have got everything covered.

Pioneering technology The team at Skin Doctor are proud to use the most up-to-date technology, and are the first clinic in the UK to use a brand new laser machine – the Lumenis Duet Laser Hair Removal System – that offers fast, painless and permanent hair removal. “Most laser machines can cause pain, as it’s necessary to go over the same spot for it to work, but this machine dramatically reduces the spot size,” says Saleena. “It only takes 15 minutes to do one leg per treatment, and there’s no need for anaesthetic or gels.”

See for yourself! The official launch will take place on 30th May from 9am-7pm, with free consultations and information on what will be offered at the clinic. Plus, experts from Murad will be on hand to provide free skin scans. “The UV scanner shows up any damage that has been caused to the skin by environmental factors such as pigmentation and broken veins,” explains Saleena, who says that she saw it in action at the Leeds clinic. “I was really surprised by what a difference just using the products and having a couple of facial peels had made to their skin,” says Saleena.

In an attempt to be even more efficient, here at Your Local Link we decided to look into ergonomics. Ergonomics can basically be summed up as sitting properly at work, not straining to see your computer or reaching to use your mouse. As a rule, humans were not designed to spend eight hours each day sitting down, therefore office environments can be detrimental to our health – particularly for back problems and repetitive strain injuries. Having a straight back, a screen at eye level and both feet on the floor are all very good, but we wondered about our chairs.

the River Foss, we got rolling. The Evolution Chair is a clever combination of a Pilates ball and a traditional chair which, according to the box, helps to improve posture, build core strength and reduce back problems. We all had a go on it, bouncing up and down throughout the day, never slouching. As there is no back rest, and the inflatable ball forces you to keep your balance, our spines were straighter and our much-ignored postural muscles were given a work out. The results: energised, happier Your Local Linkers (although this may have been due to all the ball jokes).

Putting down routes York is already known for having a fantastic network of cycling routes, and it seems that won’t be stopping any time soon. North Yorkshire Police and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation are supporting a scheme by City of York Council’s i-Travel initiative to introduce a new cycle route. The new path, which will connect Haxby Road and Wigginton Road along the line of the outer ring road, is intended to improve access between two heavily populated areas of the city. Once the route is completed it will offer residents of Haxby, New Earswick and Huntington far easier foot and cycle access to the Clifton Moor retail park. n Find out more about the proposal at www.itravelyork.info

Junior joggers Marathons, half marathons, fun runs – why is it that adults get to have all the fun? If you know a child who loves running, keep reading. The Jane Tomlinson York Mini and Junior Run is set to blast through the streets of the city on 4th August. Open to children aged from three to 14, the trek will cover either 1.5 km, or for the really superfit, 2km through the heart of the city. The run is taking place on the same day as the grown-up 10K challenge – the one several of our plucky staff will be sweating through. All funds raised will be going to Ward 17, the children’s ward, at York Hospital – which, if you remember our special in the Christmas issue, do some truly incredible things for poorly kids. n Visit www.runforall.com

Back catalogue This glorious magazine is filled with fantastic businesses and tradespersons, all of which we’d gladly have round for tea. But there’s one in particular that we want to get fully behind, because she got behind one of us. Expert osteopath Ranza, of the Fern Osteopathic Practice on Lysander Close, Clifton Moor, got hands on with our Claire after she recently suffered a bit of a fall while out delivering leaflets, injuring her back. Ranza set to the task and Claire was more than impressed with her treatment. “She was fantastic, talking through everything with me first and getting to know my ‘back history’. She gently manipulated my back and pelvis, relieving the pain and even fixing other related problems I didn’t even know I had.” n Visit www.fernosteopaths.com

New members are encouraged to go along, get weighed, enjoy a helpful health talk and then engage in some fun aerobic exercise. What makes this new class different is that the exercise sessions are also open to non-members who are invited to join in the fun. n Call 790922.

We’ve all heard about the positive effects that Pilates can have for people with a bad back, but having someone leading the class who has suffered from chronic back pain themselves helps enormously. Louise Bowden had tried everything from chiropractors to acupuncturists, steroid injections and anti-inflammatory drugs, to deal with the degeneration of her spine. She went to her first Pilates class ten years ago, and six months later she felt like a new person. When her teacher moved to Scotland in 2010, Louise was inspired to be trained by the same instructor and teach

classes herself. If you want to try Pilates out at beginner level, are looking to exercise as a form of rehabilitation or are ready to start at intermediate level, Louise’s classes are for you. You can even try a taster session for free. Sessions take place at Long Marston Village Hall on Mondays from 6.30-7.30pm, at Rufforth Village Institute from 1.452.45pm on Thursdays, and from 7th May at Poppleton Sports Pavilion from 10-11am on Tuesdays. n Visit www.pilatesbylouise.co.uk or call 07773 794301.

Fighting fit Normally in the Health & Beauty section we nag people to get fit and join an exercise group, but now we’re urging people to start their own. Fight Fit are now offering fitness enthusiasts the chance to become an instructor by taking part in a two-day training course. Proper posture How many hours a day do you spend sitting down? Many of us sit for over ten hours a day, which can prove a challenge to keeping our spines straight. Good posture can improve more than just a bad back too – it can also make a difference to headaches, shallow breathing and arthritis. If you can relate to any of these signs, the experts at Live Well Chiropractor on Gillygate can offer a non-invasive, pain free and quick assessment that measures the effect of your posture on your muscles, joints and nerves, and can help to determine whether

To spot poor posture, look for the following signs: 3 Head tilting to one side 3 Head leaning forward when looking from the side 3 A lowered shoulder or hip 3 Uneven wear on shoes 3 A trouser leg that appears shorter than the other you need to take further steps to improve your posture. n Email info@LivewellChiropractic. co.uk or call 620620.

DIY beauty: make your own bun ring We’ve all been there. You wake up, and your hair looks like a bird’s nest. It’s the perfect foundation for a great messy bun (which, in fact, is the only thing you can possibly do with your hair right now to make yourself look presentable enough to be seen out of the house). Only one problem: you don’t have a bun ring. Darn. Oh, that gives me an idea… that sock that needs darning can be transformed into a bun roll and my day will be saved! All you need to do is cut off the toes end (not while your foot is in it, obviously) then roll it into a ring shape. Voila! Pop your barnet in a ponytail, place the homemade bun ring at the end and roll the ring in on itself, making sure your hair covers all of the ring, until you have a bun. Oh – make sure you’re sock doesn’t need washing before you do this… eww.

PET TALK in association with MINSTER VETS

Got a problem with your pet? Tracey Pulleyn of Minster Vets has the answer!

Q. How often should I worm my rabbit? He lives indoors in winter and outside in summer. There is a common parasite that can cause disease in rabbits called E.cuniculi. It is passed from rabbit to rabbit via urine. It can cause damage to the kidneys and to the nervous system so can lead to a head tilt and renal failure. It is easy to treat rabbits for this preventatively using a common rabbit worming preparation that your veterinary practice can advise on. Ideally rabbits need to be treated with this every three to six months.

Q. My 13-year-old dog is now starting to sleep all the time, should I be concerned? Sometimes as pet owners we tend to assume that it is just ‘old age’ causing changes with ageing, but as pets become older they are more susceptible to disease so it would be best to rule out any medical issues that could be causing your dog to slow down. I would advise you ask a vet to take a look at your dog. They would also be able to advise you on supportive treatments, exercise regimes and appropriate feeding for your pet.

Need help? Write to us at the address on page 5, or email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Mark your question ‘Pet talk’.

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and husband. But more importantly he is a man. As a boy he assumed he would grow up to be Eddie Izzard. But at 31, and after washing off the lipstick, he finds himself writing for Your Local Link. These are his (un)manly words.

Making a stand (up) I haven’t always done this. Being a father and also Your Local Link’s resident word thinker-upper are relatively new roles for me. In the past I have been a cinema usher, a Roman history tour guide, a bloke in the background of Emmerdale and a stand-up comedian. I mention this because this month I shall be making my return to the stage. I will be compering the May meeting of the Knock Knock Comedy Club, and although I’m looking forward to what will be an entertaining night of giggles and guffaws, I’m also slightly dreading it.

Hull.

Even the name makes me sweat. There was a reason I stopped doing stand-up. Yes, there was a governmentbacked petition urging me to cease, but being a comedian for several years spawned many anecdotes. Some of

56

which I can look back on fondly, but many bring a shiver to my spine. Hull of a time Hull. Even the name makes me sweat. One particular “career advancing opportunity” took place in a working men’s club on the outskirts of the city. Why I accepted this gig I still don’t know, as it turned out not to be stand-up night but rather a variety show, complete with plate spinners and strippers. So my show, which I had cleverly entitled ‘Why Hull is Rubbish’ did not go down well with the beer swilling, swearing, local clientele. I should have taken the hint when the gig organiser pointed to a jagged hole in the stage and said, “Careful. Live wires down there.” I asked if the hole had been caused recently. He said, “No, about three years ago.” A bit miffed that my jokes about their home town were not being received well, I decided that instead of placating the crowd, I would incense them. I sat in the audience, amongst gruff men who eyed me hungrily, and proceeded to do

impersonations of them, including shouting at the empty stage, “You’re rubbish. Stop confusing us with big words!” Didn’t go down well.

Howard was going to find a photo of himself from his comedy days, but he had to dash off and help his lovely wife to give birth to his baby son, Ezra. So here’s an old photo we found of Howard in a toga instead. Tee hee.

Audience participation One of the offended men clambered onto the stage himself, belching, “I’ll have a go,” and proceeded to fall straight down the hole. Fortunately the aforementioned wires weren’t live, but what I assumed to be a family of rats were. The man screamed as he disappeared up to his waist and proceeded to howl that something was crawling over his legs. That’s when things got awkward. From elsewhere in the pub a group of angry men surged into the room, saw the chap stuck in the stage and proceeded to yell, “Who threw Pete down the (bleeping) hole?” Everyone pointed at me. It was then I realised I had lost my audience. I had to escape through a toilet window. Here’s hoping the York crowd at Knock Knock will be more accepting. Pop down if you can.

Quality time...

The other day I took my daughter out for a walk. We do these things at the weekend; little daddy/daughter adventures that usually culminate in climbing something we shouldn’t. I’m trying to have as much quality time with her as possible, so we set out together out with Ava in her buggy after she informed me that “Ava not walk, fank cho”. I bought her a cake and handed it to her. I took a moment to just look at her beautiful little face, her bright blue eyes and curly strawberry blond hair. I savoured the chance to watch her, to truly appreciate this lovely little creature that I had made and love more than anything in the world. Then Ava noticed me watching and shouted, “Push me, then!” Quality indeed.

EXPERT TUITION

Playground, revisited red rover: “Red rover, red rover…” If you remember hearing that on the playground, followed by a request for you to “come over”, probably meant you were about to get in trouble with the dinner ladies. Red Rover is a game that, like British Bulldog, has been banned by generations of Head Teachers. Two teams form, each linking arms with their team mates. One calls upon an opposing player to “come over,” and that nominated brave must attempt to break the bonds of their enemy by crashing through the linked arms. Failure means having to join the sturdy players, whereas success rewards you with a gallant return to your mates, joined by one of the enemy’s players.

Well read Ever wondered how best to get your child interested in reading? Luckily for you, we’ve got proper bona fide advice from a real life children’s librarian. Follow these tips and you and your little one will be racing through Dickens in no time (well, maybe not – but certainly The Very Hungy Caterpillar). Top Tips: 3 It may be hard on you, but reading the same story again and again helps children to learn new words. 3 Find the children’s section at your local library. Ask for recommendations and let your child take the opportunity to choose their own books. 3 Keep reading to your child even though they can read for themselves. Encourage independent reading but remember children will still love a bedtime story.

3 Be positive. Praise your child for trying hard at their reading. It’s all right to make mistakes. 3 Don’t worry if your child reads newspapers, magazines, comics and the Internet as well as books. Any reading is good, as it introduces new words and interests. 3 Enjoy yourselves and have fun. The most important thing to help a child become a successful reader is to show that reading is valuable and enjoyable.

Fostering

If you have ever considered fostering but worried that you might not be suitable, think again. Foster Care Fortnight is upon us, and between the 13th – 26th May a lot of people will be talking about fostering and the help you can give to children in need of a home. In 2013 it is estimated that 9000 fosterers are needed to deal with the growing number of children in care. Did you know that not only married couples can foster? Single people, as well as gay and lesbian couples, can foster as can people with full-time jobs. You don’t even have to own your own home, or be a parent yourself. n Find out more about fostering, and what services are in our area, at www.fostering.net

The charity has recently celebrated the appointment of new Chief Executive Philippa Crowther, who takes the helm after many years in the private health care sector. Beningbrough Hall, the beautiful 18th century stately home just a few miles north of the city, played a vital role in the Second World War. Pilots and crews of the RAF were stationed at the hall, flying daily and dangerous raids from the nearby airfield. To recognise the sacrifice of those brave men and to celebrate the end of the war, Beningbrough Hall will be turning the sounds of air raid sirens to joyous song and dance. From Sirens to Celebrations will take place over the bank holiday weekend (4th-6th May) and feature re-enactments, drill activities, jive workshops and pre-war vintage cars. Local support

It’s good to talk The theme of Dementia Awareness Week taking place from 19th-25th May focuses on just that. We take a look at places in York that can offer support. Over 800,000 people in the UK have it, and by 2021 it’s predicted that figure will rise to 940,000 – and to 1.7 million by 2050. But what exactly is dementia? Ann-Marie Roche from care provider Home Instead explains. “As a condition, dementia is still misunderstood by wider society. Dementia is an umbrella term that describes a set of symptoms that can include, (but are not limited to), loss of memory, mood changes and problems with communication and reasoning. There are many types of dementia, not just Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia, (which we commonly hear about.)”

Dementia Awareness Week will focus on the importance of talking – and what better way to have a chat than over a coffee? On 22nd May, the folks from the York branch of Alzheimer’s Society will take Parliament Street back to the 1950s with a vintage pop up coffee bar. what’s hot

and what’s not

We’ve got the lowdown on what the well-dressed home is wearing... Oranges and lemons … and pears, cherries, blackcurrants – in fact any kind of fruit is big news in interiors. As we write we’re battling arctic weather conditions, so if the sun still hasn’t put his hat on by the time you’re reading this, then a bit of fruit will help us all to feel a little brighter. Go for a stylised print in bright colours rather than a still life picture to keep it modern.

Retro Apple Print Cushion £25 www.notonthehighstreet.com

White Wash Boat Mirror The Range, Jockey Lane, Monks Cross £17.99

Seaside theme Summer is almost here (allegedly – see our earlier point referring to the sun and his hat) so now is a fantastic time for some pretty seaside accessories. Think prints featuring boats and anchors, or even get some deck chairs if the weather permits us to enjoy sitting outside. If you want to go for the trend in a more subtle way, you can’t go wrong with seafaring stripes in white and either red or blue – try a stripy cushion for an inexpensive option. Driftwood Candle Holder The Range, Jockey Lane, Monks Cross £11.99 Insect coasters. John Lewis £15 www.johnlewis.com

Wildlife prints If the weather won’t play ball, bring the outside in with some cool curtains or wall art that features cute critters. It depends on how daring you are with this trend as to how far you want to go with it – we love butterflies, but we reckon that beetles on a tablecloth might put us off our tea. However, apparently insects are huge at the moment (not literally, come out from behind the settee) so if you’re brave, and not easily dissuaded from eating, go for it. We think we’ll stick to the pretty butterflies, though.

Floating candles We thought that these had made their exit in the 1990s, along with the Spice Girls, scrunchies and Vice Versas. They were all the rage at the time, until we discovered the weird scum that formed on them after about a week and the fact that their dye made the water go a funny colour (we are talking about the candles now, by the way). However, we have discovered to our horror that floating candles are available to purchase once again. Do not fall for it, people; the water will go the same funny colour that it always did.

Pot pourri Why do people still fall for pot pourri? Maybe we’ve just been buying duds for the past 30 years, but it seems that every bag of the stuff we buy smells nice in the shop, then miraculously loses its scent by the time we’ve got it home. Then all you’re left with is a bunch of dead leaves in a bowl, which is taking the wildlife trend a bit far if you ask us. Is there a secret that we don’t know about? Are you supposed to sing to it or something? We’ll stick to the reed diffuser, thanks.

House warming Fancy paying £120 annually in heating bills? No, we didn’t miss out a zero at the end. A clever Yorkshire couple wanting somewhere to retire to have built a Passivhaus, which we’ve decided runs on magic. It’s a lowenergy two storey home that requires just one radiator and two towel rails to keep it warm. The concept has made the journey to the UK from Germany, where it originated in the 1990s, and it works by using a mechanical ventilation system to keep the house between 20-21˚C. It even has windows from floor to ceiling, but only uses ten per cent of the energy most houses do. It reminds us of that friend that everyone has who can eat cream cakes all day without putting on an ounce.

70

Most of us think of our homes as a drain on our finances, be it the rent, the mortgage or our fuel bills. But did you know there are ways to make your house pay? If you’re not particularly house proud, and don’t mind dozens of strangers trampling through your hallway, how about renting out your domicile to film crews? TV and Film companies are always looking for interesting (and also ordinary) homes to film in. Many residents of Bristol made a killing doing this very thing while the BBC show Casualty was being made, making around £900 a day. And that’s Bristol – come on, our houses are much nicer than theirs…

How long does it take you to walk to the centre of town? If you’ve ever sighed at having to make the 15 minute trip from Holgate, or a 25 minute saunter from Tang Hall, then listen up. As part of a City of York Council initiative to utilise the empty space above city-centre shops, you could be living right on St Sampson’s Square. Purchased by investment company The Helmsley Group, the property which houses Thomas the Baker, will soon have the upper stories converted into apartments, allowing people not only instantaneous access to pasties but also the epitome of city centre living. We’ve already bagsied a flat above York’s Chocolate Story. Imagine the smells!

H.A.ppy residents. It seems that the tenants of properties managed by York Housing Association are a satisfied bunch. An independent survey has shown that 88% of tenants are happy with the overall service provided to them. The survey looked at a range of services including overall satisfaction, rent, quality of housing and customer care. Also, 93% of residents said they felt safe in their neighbourhood. n Visit www.yorkha.org.uk

Elementary, dear reader

Dummies’ guide to:

the future

Electrical expert Matt Todd makes it easy to understand the latest technology. This month he takes a look at hot (or cool, rather) upcoming products. Herbert Todd’s have recently been to the annual Euronics trade fair at the NEC in Birmingham, and despite the weather not knowing what it was doing and gloomy reports from the economists, the manufacturers present were all very excited about what the future might bring. It was great to see that although many larger suppliers have suffered low sales in recent years, they have still been spending huge amounts on research and development so that we can look forward to some really cool products this year. Telly addicts And they don’t come much cooler than an 84” Ultra High Definition TV. In the consumer electronics industry size can be everything, but not at the expense of quality. Both Sony and LG have products ready

for sale right now and the clarity of picture is breathtaking. If you can afford the £20K price tags and lack of content then you will certainly have bragging rights down the local! Stay cool… Sticking with the cool theme, Hotpoint are pioneering a new technology in food storage. The system integrated into some of their fridge freezers releases oxygen-rich ions into the food compartment (apparently similar to the system used in the tent Michael Jackson used to enjoy with his monkey!) to make sure food lasts longer and retains its nutritional content. It’s no good for pets though… In general the move towards ever more environmentally friendly, and therefore pocket friendly, products was very evident. Liebherr were showing off a new fridge freezer at

Transform your conservatory with a Guardian Roof The Guardian Warm Roof System is the biggest revelation to hit the home improvement market in the last ten years. You can now change your old conservatory roof for a new Guardian Roof and effectively turn your old conservatory into a new extension that can be used all year round. The complete changeover takes around three to four days with very minimal disruption to your household. The Roof System is designed to replace the existing glass or polycarbonate roof of a conservatory while retaining the original windows, doors, frames and walls. At the same time providing substantial energy cost savings. Fully tested and approved to all thermal and structural standards, the Guardian system is a high performance insulated roof system comprising of a pre-engineered lightweight frame, two layers of rigid insulation board, internal insulated plasterboard, exterior grade plywood, vapour membrane and a choice of external tile finishes.

• High performance insulated warm roof conversion system • Lightweight aluminium frame • Provides energy cost savings • Reduces rain noise and glare • LABC Registered (minimise building control checks & approval process) • Reduced fuel bills for the life of the roof • Thermal, structural and condensation risk tested • A wide range of roof colours and finishes • Comfortable ambient temperature all year • Fast installation utilising existing walls, windows and doors • Fully guaranteed All you need to know The Guardian Conversion System has been designed to provide a high performance thermal and structural solution with zero condensation risk over the life of the roof.

Guardian roof conversion would be exempt if it was at ground level, does not exceed 30m2 floor area, be thermally separated from the building it is attached to, have an independent heating system from the main building and have glazing that meets Part N in the critical zones. However, Building Control approval should always be sought. But, with Guardian systems being LABC certified, this process should proceed without complication. The Guardian Warm Roof Conversion System is fully compliant for use in a conventional situation such as an extension and has been fully approved by LABC for use as a full replacement conservatory roof. With Building Control approval, Guardian high performance insulated roof conversions may allow the removal of the wall between the house and the conservatory, offering the flexibility to extend and enlarge an existing kitchen, living room or bedroom. Cut the spears from the plant when they are no more than around 18 cm in length. Make sure you don’t cut down the ones that are thinner than a pencil – those will keep growing for next season. make everything in your garden lovely with dean’s garden centre

FOCUS ON:

Hardy geraniums

The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down.

The true hardy geraniums or cranesbills come in many shapes and forms, from small delicate alpines like geranium cinereum, vigorous ground covering species like geranium macrorrhizum and tall-growing border varieties such as geranium psilostemon that can reach 1m (3ft) tall. They are hardy herbaceous perennials, often confused with pelagoniums (bedding geranium) which are only half hardy and require protection from frost to overwinter sucessfully.

Varieties: Geranium cinereum is a small low-growing type, growing up to 15cm (six inches). It’s ideally suited to the rock garden or alpine planter, and has small grey-green foliage and a mound forming habit. The most popular variety, ballerina, produces very pale pink flowers with a deep pink or magenta network of veins between late April and June. It is easy to grow given a free-draining sunny postion. Geranium macrorrhizum is a versatile, vigorous, ground covering species that is very shade tolerant but equally at home in full sun. The slightly fleshy apple green foliage gives off a fresh ‘fruity’

aroma when crushed and as a bonus turns a bright crimson red in autumn. The most widely available varieties are ingwersons (lilac flowers) bevans (pink flowers) and album (white flowers), which all produce their flowers over a long period between May and September. As well as being shade tolerant they are happy in most soil types.

on the petals.

Geranium x magnificum is a clump-forming perennial growing to around 70cm (28 inches) tall. With lobed, soft hairy green leaves and beautiful darkveined rich violet flowers up to 5cm (two inches) wide, it flowers prolifically but has a short season in comparison to other geraniums.

Psilostemon is one parent of another interesting variety, Anne Folkard, which has the same magenta and maroon flower but golden foliage and an unusal scrambling habit that allows it to grow up through other plants in a similar way to some herbaceous clematis.

Geranium pratense or Meadow Cranesbill is native to Britain, growing to around 60cm (two feet) it prefers an open sunny position but will tolerate light shade. It is suitable for use in the traditional herbaceous border and also looks superb when planted in between white or pink old fashioned shrub roses. Mrs Kendall-Clarke is an improved variety with clear blue flowers and white veining. Splish Splash has white flowers with variable amounts of blue splashes

Bressingham Flair was bred by renowned plantsman Alan bloom in his gardens at Bressingham, has a more compact habit being approx 60cm tall making it less susceptable to wind damage. It still maintains the bright magenta flowers with the deep maroon centre of the species.

Geranium phaeum is also known as dusky cranesbill or mourning widow. Whilst not the most showy geranium it has unusual dark red/brown reflexed petals (pointing backwards) between May and June. Growing to around 60cm tall, it is tolerant of dry shade. Samobor is a variegated form with green and maroon foliage and the same red-brown flowers, while Lily Lovell has deep blue-purple, almost black flowers.

GROW YOUR OWN with Debbie Pendle from Brunswick Organic Nursery Growing your own fruit and veg is rewarding, good for the planet – and your pocket. Here’s how…

Reap what you sow

Now is the time to plant out early sown crops and to make final preparations for tender crops that can go out towards the end of the month, once the threat of frost has passed. Plants raised from seedlings indoors should be ‘hardened off’ prior to planting; a process of gradual exposure to cold temperatures. An open cold frame is ideal for this as you can cover it with glass or fleece to protect plants at night. Keep an eye on the night time temperatures as a late frost at this stage can cause devastating results on tender crops, which will set you back and add cost.

Root crops It’s not too late to sow root crops such as beetroot, parsnips and carrots. Sowing in late spring will give the soil chance to warm up resulting in quicker germination and faster growth. Rake the soil to break down any clods and form a fine, level seed bed prior to sowing. Rake in a seaweed or fish blood and bone fertiliser (check product for application rate) at least a week before you are ready to sow. Use a garden line pegged down at each end to keep the seed in a straight line. It will not only look more attractive and save space, but will also make it easier to identify weed seedlings when they emerge. Make a shallow drill with the edge of a hoe and water using a watering can so as not to disturb the soil. Sow your seed thinly to reduce the need for thinning later on and cover seeds. Finally, put plant markers at each end of the rows

so you can easily identify where the seed has been sown prior to germination. You might also want to label the rows with the variety and date sown for future reference.

Weeds Be prepared to get the hoe out on a regular basis at this stage! Keep the area weed-free to reduce competition for light, water and nutrients. Emerging seedlings can soon get smothered by fast growing weeds. If time is a limiting factor, consider applying a mulch to stop weeds germinating and retain moisture. Mulch is best applied after planting up or germination has taken place and the plants are growing on. Garden compost, cocoa shell, straw and even cardboard and newspaper are effective and will eventually rot down to improve the soil.

JOBS FOR May 3 Sow tender crops like courgettes,

marrows, beans and sweetcorn 3 Plant outdoor tomatoes in late May 3 Sow salad and annual herbs

Local Suppliers: The Brunswick Shop, Appleton Road, Bishopthorpe, York YO23 2RF

Stop those slugs Defend your young plants from slug attacks as crops at this stage can be destroyed overnight! Beer traps are the traditional method of organic control, but not that convenient to implement. ‘Organic’ slug pellets based on ferric phosphate are another child, pet and wildlife friendly option that break down to iron and phosphate which are soil nutrients.

Top Tip: Sow fast growing crops in small quantities to avoid gluts. Combine early and late season varieties to extend the season.

Perfect Ponds

Graham from Pond Planet is back to offer top tips on making the most of your pond and looking after the fish who call it home. Spring is here and we’re finally enjoying some better weather. Now is the time to get our ponds ready for the summer months.

Appleton Road, Bishopthorpe York YO23 2RF tel 01904 701869

Pumps need a quick once over and filter foams and media should be given a good clean using pond water. Never use tap water or any other chemicals for this job as this will kill any beneficial bacteria built up on the media. Now is also the best time to change your UV bulb. Silt and debris which has built up over the winter period is best removed using a fine net or, for a better result, a pond vacuum works wonders. Pond plants, which should be starting to show signs of new growth, can be tidied up by cutting and removing the old leaves and shoots. Marginal and bog plants can be lifted, divided and replanted using only the vigorous outer portions. Like any other garden plant they will benefit from some fertiliser. This usually comes in the form of a fertiliser stick, tablet or liquid feed. Start to feed your fish sparingly on a low protein food, and make sure to monitor water quality using a test kit. Ammonia, nitrite and PH are the main parameters to keep a regular check on. For advice, call Pond Planet on 01347 811897

Ask Chris...

Got a gardening question? Our resident green-fingered guru CHRIS BROWN can help Here are a few shrubs and perennials that attract butterflies and bees:

Q.

I would like to have more bees and butterflies in my garden. Can you give me some advice on which plants I could use to bring them into my garden? Flowering shrubs that appeal to butterflies offer a bonus that few gardeners would wish to ignore. Many are also sweetly scented. The nectar of their flowers is attractive to butterflies, as well as to a host of other insects including hoverflies and bees. All these industrious creatures help to make the garden a more interesting and lively place.

3 Buddleja Davidii 3 Black Knight 3 Lavender Hidcote or Munstead 3 Hebe Albicans 3 Escallonia Donard Seedling 3 Pyracantha Mohave 3 Syringa (Lilac) Madame Lemoine 3 Thymus Vulgaris (Common Thyme) 3 Allium Purple Sensation 3 Calamintha Nepeta 3 Monarda Squaw 3 Inula Hookeri 3 Sedum Autumn Joy Enjoy the beautiful sight these creatures bring!

Q.

I have a Viburnium bush in my garden and for the last few years in late spring something has been eating holes in the leaves. Can you explain what it is please? The damage is being caused by the Viburnum Beetle, which eats irregular holes out of Viburnum bushes in May and June. Holes are eaten between the many veins and the remaining tissues turn brown. Since the late 1970s this beetle has attacked Viburnums, and laid eggs in canker-like pits in young stems, which lie there over winter then hatch in mid-May. Creamy yellow larvae with extensive black markings then feed on leaves in May and June and grow to about 7mm before going to the soil to pupate, which is about a month after hatching. Adult beetles emerge from the earthen pupal cells in July and August, and also feed on leaves before laying eggs at the tips of year old shoots. These then overwinter and hatch the following spring, and the cycle begins again! Look out for the first signs of damage in May/June then spray thoroughly with a contact insecticide to kill the young larvae. Repeat after a week or so if necessary.

Ever been stung by a nettle? Really hurts, doesn’t it? But, instead of getting angry with the humble weed and declaring war upon it and all of its kind, reach for a dock leaf and calm down. You see, from 14th to 25th May is National Be Nice to Nettles Week, a time when we should all respect the bane of childhood outdoor adventures and remember the vital part they play in our ecosystem. Asparagus season! Hooray! We’ve all been eagerly awaiting the super fresh Yorkshire asparagus from The Balloon Tree Farmshop, which will arrive a little later than usual this year due to the adverse weather conditions. From the beginning of the month, though, we’ll be able to munch on the lovely green stuff until our heart’s content. The sandy soil at The Balloon Tree is particularly well-suited to growing asparagus as it’s a Mediterranean crop, so the quality and taste of the yield is truly scrumptious. If you want someone else to cook your asparagus for you too, check out the delicacies available at the café and the deli. Meanwhile, little ones will be kept occupied with the fantastic play area and a newly renovated animal corner. The asparagus is popular, so please phone in advance to check availability. n Visit www.theballoontree.co.uk or call 01759 373023.

Our Nic and Kelly checked out the ‘choctails’ on offer at York’s Chocolate Story upcoming Connoisseur Club. The next Connoisseurs Club at York’s Chocolate Story will take on a decidedly grown up feel. Visitors will be able to have a go at making the ‘choctails’ that are currently available in the Chocolate Bar café at the attraction, which take inspiration from York brands – the Mint Chocolate Delight tastes like an After Eight, while Chocolate Orange Temptation is just like a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. Kris Carey, Food and Beverage Manager, took us through three cocktails: one shaken, one stirred, and one blended. Be warned, these drinks are strong – we reckon you’ll only need one. Our Nic couldn’t manage more than that, and she’s from Doncaster… Mocha Martini Kelly and Nic decided that this is the perfect hair of the dog. Combining vodka, amaretto and chocolate liqueur with a sweet espresso, it’s smooth and flavoursome.

Rum Choc Ice Dark rum, vanilla ice cream and chocolate liqueur make up this delightful milkshake, blended to perfection. It’s super creamy, and certainly packs a punch. White Chocolate Russian This is the stirred cocktail – stirred 19 times, to be exact, as 20 is “just too many” according to Kris – topped with cream. It’s the Chocolate Bar’s best seller, and we can see why. With vodka, chocolate liqueur and a dash of Kahlua, it’s also available as a long drink with milk. Yum. The Choctails Masterclass Connoisseurs Club takes place on 4th June from 7pm and costs £10. Visit www.yorkschocolatestory.com

A perfect

union

We chat to Helen Turner, one half of local acoustic singer/songwriter duo Union Jill, about the release of the band’s third album, Respectable Rebellion, this month.

The Suffragettes, York’s famous Mad Alice and the women who delivered aeroplanes to the front line in World War Two – these are just some of the topics tackled by Union Jill’s latest musical offering. The duo, made up of Helen Turner and Sharon Winfield, have been performing and recording together since 2006 and are set to launch their latest record on 11th May at the National Centre for Early Music. When we spoke to Helen, she was thoroughly excited. “Clive Gregson, who produced the album, will perform with us, as well as Andy Seward on bass. It will be the first time that we have all played together in public since we recorded the album together, so it’ll be a sort of reunion too,” says Helen. “It’s going to be really special. Also Holly Tamar, a favourite local singer of ours, will support, which is fantastic.”

Re:union It was a chance meeting that let to the formation of Union Jill. Helen, who is also Senior Lecturer in Art at York St John University, and Sharon Winfield, owner of ethical boutique Maude and Tommy, met through mutual friends at Beverly Folk Festival in 2006. “We’d both performed as solo artists previously, but neither of us had got on stage for ages, so we decided to have a go together at another festival we were both going to,” says Helen. “Everyone heard us and said that we sounded pretty good, so we decided to do another few sessions together. Almost immediately we had a ten year plan for fame, fortune and success!” So, seven years in, how far through the plan are they? “We start it again every year! It’s a rather vague and flexible plan...”

Rebel Rebel After listening to Respectable Rebellion in the Your Local Link office we can confirm that it isn’t your usual female singer fare – if you’re looking for an album full of love songs, you’ll be disappointed. Sharon likes to focus on historical stories, whereas Helen is inspired by current topics. “Sometimes I’ll be listening to the radio and something will inspire me, like for instance the fact that Saudi women aren’t allowed to drive. That sort of thing is totally incomprehensible to us in Britain,” says Helen. Don’t let the amount of songs that are focused on women fool you into thinking that the pair are militant feminists, though. “We’re not trying to preach anything, we just write about what we find interesting or inspiring, but inequality seems to be everywhere,” says Helen, who was also moved to write a song for the album about the tragedy of the cockle pickers in Morecambe Bay. “It’s certainly easier to write about something that you feel passionate about,” says Helen. So how does the songwriting process work? “Either one of us will bring an 80% finished song to the table – or one that we think is 80% finished! Then we’ll pick it apart and add harmonies, and it becomes our song. We share the credits for all of our songs, regardless of who first started them.”

Family affair Helen has a family, so how does she manage her time? “It’s a great way to escape, and a wonderful excuse to go out – I have to go because I’m working!” she laughs. “That’s another reason I like being part of a duo; it would be harder to have the impetus to do it on my own. My children are a little too young to fully appreciate the music – they’re aged two and five – but Ruby, the older one, wants to join the band!” laughs Helen. “You never know, we might become a family band one day…”

What’s in a

name? Wondering what’s with the name? Helen explains: “We wanted to sound female, but didn’t want to be ‘girls’ ‘babes’ or ‘witches’, and we aren’t sisters. Plus, we wanted to sound English, as we aren’t really Americana. So instead of Union Jack... it’s Union Jill!”

Helen knows how Ruby feels having dreamed of stardom from a young age. “I think everyone dreams of being a singer, don’t they? I have watched talent shows and wondered why everyone else wants to do what I want to do though!” Helen laughs. “It’s addictive.”

On tour Now that the band have an agent, they have been gigging all over the country – but they’re not deserting their home town. “We perform lots in York and Yorkshire, but you can’t overplay – people only want to hear your songs so many times!” Helen adds that she hopes to entice people out from in front of the TV. “We still need to get out there a bit and show people in York who we are. Saying that though, there is a great folk scene in York and people are really committed to supporting local musicians.”

Cheeky girls Being mischievous ourselves at Your Local Link, we totally identify with the pair’s ‘don’t ask, don’t get’ policy. “We’ve asked to support bands we like just so that we could meet them,” says Helen. “People like Po Girl, and Oysterband – we sent their promoter some chocolates in the shape of oysters and a grovelling postcard. We always figure that the worst they can say is no, so we just play the ‘shy bairns getting out’ card...” It seems to work quite well – Oysterband were happy for them to support (we reckon chocolate gets you pretty much everywhere in this world) and Helen says that one of Sharon’s dreams came true when Ric Sanders from Fairport Convention joined the pair to record an album with them. “There’s no overnight success, though,” says Helen. “We’re still waiting for that sleep.” The album launch takes place at NCEM from 7.30pm on 11th May. iShandy (11th April – 11th May)

New Jersey Nights (2nd-4th May)

Very loosely based on the novel by Laurence Sterne, the new play sees members of a teachers’ Book Club meet to discuss the latest ambitious read in their season of Yorkshire classics, the insurmountable Tristram Shandy. However, this is no ordinary cosy night in with a good book as the evening takes some extraordinary twists and turns.

Angels & Insects (11th April – 4th May) An Amazonian explorer and entomologist, returning home shipwrecked and penniless to Victorian England, is taken in by a wealthy aristocrat. Whilst employed to catalogue his benefactor’s collection of insects, he falls in love with the beautiful and mysterious daughter of the household.

THE MISENTHROPE (21st – 25th May) Poet Alceste is disgusted with French society. Powdered fops gossip in code and be-jewelled coquettes whisper behind fans wherever he looks. In pursuit of honesty, he embarks on a one-man crusade against forked-tongues, frippery and fakery in this adaptation by poet Roger McGough. To book: 623568.

102

Featuring four great singers, perfect harmonies, stylised costumes, a rocking live band and amazing dancers, Jersey Nights delivers all of the Four Seasons hits. To book: 0844 8713024.

The Mousetrap (6th-11th May) The scene is set when a group of people gathered in a country house cut off by the snow discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst. Who can it be?

Priscilla Queen of the Desert (13th-18th May) Priscilla is the heart-warming, uplifting adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship and end up finding more than they had ever dreamed of.

THE GRUFFALO’S CHILD (9th-10th July) ‘The Gruffalo said that no Gruffalo should ever set foot in the deep dark wood...’ Following hot on the heels of The Gruffalo’s sell out tour and his monstrous West End success comes the story of his brilliantly brave daughter. The Gruffalo’s Child follows the young creature on a wild and windy night, as she ignores her father’s warning and ventures out into the snow. The Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist… does he? This magical, musical adaptation of the ever popular children’s book will delight all the family.

Joseph Rowntree Theatre TIP TOP DANCE (9th-11th May) A lively show featuring different forms of dance, from tap to modern and ballet to Irish. se marie, sees a long-divorced couple pretend to still be together for the sake of family wedding. De Niro and Diane Keaton are the afore mentioned estranged couple, with the ranks of their clueless family being made up by Katherine Heigl, Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams as a priest.

Star Trek Into Darkness. We hope that you live long and prosper – certainly long enough to catch the sequel to the rebooted Star Trek franchise. J J Abrams, the man that brought us TV’s Lost, returns to the helm (or should we say captain’s chair) to bring us another tale of Kirk, Spock and the USS Enterprise. This time we’re given a baddy played by posho Benedict Cumberbatch, and are promised a much darker story – as the title suggests. But judging by the trailer they might as well have called it Star Trek Things Will Blow Up.

spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. The trailer looks swish and stylish, as you might expect from the director of Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet.

Epic. In this 3D animated film, a young girl is magically shrunk down to the size of an insect and encounters a race of warrior-like forest dwellers. As you do. A few big names prop up the film by lending their vocal talents, including Colin Farrell, Christoph

Waltz, Steven Tyler and Beyoncé Knowles. Epic, based on William Joyce’s book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs, should be a great film for kids to enjoy, be they six or 60.

The Big Wedding. We remember the days when having Robert De Niro in a film guaranteed action, tough talking and wise guys popping caps. These days the De Niro seal of approval is given only to romcoms. This American remake of the original 2006 French film Mon frère

The Hangover 3. Normally when a film spawns a second sequel, it is not always a great indicator of brilliance but rather one of ‘cashin-abilty’ (that is a word, promise). However, 2009’s The Hangover (and of course, its follow-up) was so funny, we don’t begrudge another dipping of the toe into these comedy waters. Back once again are Bradley Cooper and Zack Galifianakis as friends who constantly keep finding themselves in often awkward situations as a result of over indulgence booze-wise. This time Alan, played by the bearded Galifianakis, finds himself in a mental hospital and requires rescuing by his friends. Cheers!
