Welcome!
Here in the Your Local Link office, we’ve been preparing for Bonfire Night with gusto. Mostly, our preparations have involved nagging Rach to bake loads of parkin and practising our apple bobbing technique. Here’s a word of warning to any office visitors, though – Mim takes apple bobbing incredibly seriously, and it’s basically impossible to beat her (ask Kelly – she ended up in tears the last time she tried). She practises all year round. Seriously – her record is 30 apples in a minute. Beat that.* But apple bobbing isn’t the only competitive sport being played by Linkers. In a bid to explain away our teeth-aching addiction to sweets,

we have devised a competition based around bonfire toffee. Competitors must keep their piece of sugar laden goodness in their mouth without chewing for as long as possible. Or at least, that’s how we used to play – now the ‘game’ just involves scoffing lots of toffee, as well as the leftover sweets from Halloween. Oh, who are we trying to kid. There were no leftover sweets. *Please don’t try so hard to beat that score that you do yourself an injury. We don’t want any hospital visits on our hands.

Meet Katie! Our lovely freelance
writer Katie is a rather talented soul. Not only has she recently been part of a Yahoo writing team that won an award for their content, but she also wins The Your Local LinkBest Colleague of the Year award whenever she brings in Krispy Kreme doughnuts (which happen to be her favourite food). One thing you probably won’t guess about Katie, though, is that she is weirdly into Meatloaf. Yeah, that way. We don’t get it either.

november is the month to…
Practice your carol singing
Buy a card, make
a difference
It’s that time of year again, to dig out the Christmas card list and get scribbling so that your friends and family receive their cards in plenty of time for the festive season. Have you thought about where you’re going to get your cards from this year? Sure, you could pick some up from the newsagents on the way home from work, but wouldn’t you rather take the opportunity to give an extra gift? Plenty of local charities offer their own Christmas cards, giving you the chance to say hello to an old friend and help a worthwhile cause into the bargain. Some local charities close to our hearts who create gorgeous cards include St Leonard’s Hospice (cards can be ordered online at www.stleonardshospice.org. uk or bought from their shops) and York Against Cancer (again, order online at www.yorkagainstcancer.org.uk or buy in store).
Speaking of Christmas cards, we reckon there’s nothing like a good old fashioned carol singalong to get you in the festive spirit. The Scrooges amongst you might moan that we’re getting excited about Christmas too early, but there’s a good reason – half of the tickets for York’s 56th annual Community Carol Concert have already been sold, so you’d better get a wiggle on if you haven’t already bought yours! The concert returns to the Barbican on 15th December at 2.30pm, with some new faces on stage who will
perform your favourite festive carols and music. Millegro, Shepherd Group Concert Brass Band, and the joint choirs of Headlands Primary School and Yearsley Grove Primary School are joined by Steve Cassidy, as well as Clouds harp quartet and top York soprano Rebecca Newman. And, of course, you will also star as part of the audience choir if you collect your free carol sheet – you’ll even be led by Musical Conductor John Warburton! n Visit www.yorkbarbican.co.uk or call 0844 8542757.
Sandburn Hall history of a local family Sandburn Hall is situated on the outskirts of York, just off the A64. Comprising of an18hole Championship Golf Course, Tykes Restaurant and wedding/function facilities, Sandburn Hall is a family business founded by local York businessman Mike Hogg in 2003. The construction of Sandburn Hall began with the re-development of the old farm barn, now known as Tykes restaurant. The original brickwork, beams and some old farm chains can still be seen throughout the restaurant. The family room in Tykes displays some of the ‘Sanderson’ family pictures. This is the family name of Mike’s mother, and has long history in York, with many family members being Freemen of the City.

The barns were extended to include the Grand Function Hall and Golf Club House. Mike Hogg originally trained as a joiner, and he had a dream to construct a building which showcased the best of the long-established trade. The Grand Function Hall, now popular for weddings, celebrations and corporate functions, is a spectacular example, as the roof has been constructed using a dried green oak frame work with oak pegging. You will not see a modern nut or bolt holding this construction together! The Grand Hall caters for up to 150 guests for a sit down meal and up to 200 guests for evening receptions, and to add to its delight it overlooks the stunning golf course and lakes through arched framed windows, giving customers an impressive view. After three years of development Sandburn Hall’s 18-hole Championship Golf Course and Driving Range opened for the summer of 2005. The golf club now boasts some of the best golf facilities in the area! The newest addition to Sandburn Hall came just last year when an additional two storey extension was finished, providing the new Sanderson Room and Settle Bar, aptly named after Mike’s great granddad – William Settle-Sanderson. The Sanderson Room is proving to be popular for local celebrations and conferencing, catering for approx 60 people. In the last eight years things definitely have changed lots for Sandburn Hall but what’s next? Watch this space!

Enjoy some Smarties We don’t need much of an excuse to dig into some chocolate, so when we discovered that Smarties had been voted York’s favourite sweet brand we seized the opportunity to ‘celebrate’ (also known as stuffing our faces). The sweets came out top of a poll of over 5000 people by the team at York’s Chocolate Story. In second and third place respectively were Fruit Pastilles and Jelly Tots, so in the interests of being fair we purchased several packs of all three. After getting lots of work done in a very short space of time, we all felt quite sick. Maybe five packs each was too much…
Give Guy some love Like most Yorkies, we’ve got a rather large soft spot for Guy Fawkes. Sure, he may have tried to blow up James I, but was he really that bad? Well, maybe he was… but we still love him. Here’s why. • He’s got a really, really cool name. How many kids in 1570 were christened ‘Guy’? • He was described by Oswald Tesimond, a former school friend, as “pleasant of approach and cheerful of manner, opposed to quarrels and strife ... loyal to his friends”. He sounds lovely!
• He was part of the inspiration for V for Vendetta, which is a pretty awesome film. • And last but not least, he was born and educated in York! He’s one of us, bless him. Even if he technically was a terrorist…

The ups and downs of life as seen by our very own (very) grumpy, (almost) old woman
don’t forget the potatoes Ah, the festive season. Time for Berwick Kaler, dusting off last year’s bottle of advocaat and regrettable Christmas parties. Time for red cups in Starbucks, mulled wine in Betty’s, and Christmas shopping in Coney Street. And time, most of all, for making lists. I love making lists all year round, but especially as Christmas approaches. Nothing pleases me more than putting my festive to-do list down on paper. Unless it’s ticking things off my festive todo list, that is. In fact, I have even been known to add a job I’ve completed to my list, just so I can have the pleasure of ticking it off. Last year, I tried joining the 21st century and putting my list on a phone app, but somehow pressing the delete button isn’t nearly so satisfying as putting a big thick line through it. List love Festive list making starts in November, and reaches its peak sometime around Christmas Eve (by which time, the list is bizarrely three times longer than when I started).
12
First there’s the food shopping list. Because after doing Christmas dinner for more than 20 years, there is still the outside chance I may have a complete festive meltdown and forget to buy the turkey. Actually, that did almost happen in what’s now referred to as The Year Mum Forgot The Potatoes. I have to tell you, a Christmas dinner with Smash instant mash is really not the same. Then there’s the gift list. Everyone has their own page in my notebook, and I jot down whenever I spot something I think they might like. Although I’m not quite sure why, since by Christmas Eve I’ve given up and bought everyone comedy festive socks. My husband can’t understand my obsession. He has no respect for The List and reckons he manages quite well without one. But then he forgets dental appointments and comes home from the supermarket with six different types of ham, a novelty corkscrew and no toilet roll.
My husband reckons I set myself up for disappointment and failure with my lists, and he’s probably right. No matter how organised I think I am, come Christmas Eve my purse will still be overflowing with scraps of paper saying things like ‘Buy stamps’, ‘Suit from dry cleaners’, or the single enigmatic question – ‘Spanx?’ (I never did work out why there was a question mark). But at least thanks to my lists, everyone stands a chance of getting a Christmas present this year, and there will be more than six types of ham and a novelty corkscrew on the festive table. And who knows? Perhaps this year I might even remember the potatoes…
Calling all would-be writers!

Keep it in the family In a bid to get everyone more organised, I tried to get the family to sign up to an online Christmas calendar/to-do list we could all access from our computers and phones. But my husband ignored it and my daughter kept adding random things for her own amusement. Let me tell you, there are only so many times you can see ‘Buy Tena Ladies’ added to your Christmas to-do list before you snap.
How would you like to learn to write a novel in a day? More to the point, how would you like to spend a day with top-selling author Donna Douglas (that’s me, by the way) at the spectacular Grange Hotel? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then please join me for Writestars one day workshop ‘Write A Novel In A Day’ on 16th November. I’ll be offering lots of advice to kickstart your writing project, from developing your plot to creating memorable characters and sharpening up your dialogue. There’ll be lots of exercises to get you thinking, and I hope we can have some fun. Oh, and there’s lunch, too. And tea. Because we writers need lots of tea. To find out more, visit www.writerstars.co.uk or look out for the ad in this month’s Your Local Link. I hope to see you there!

Horoscopes November 2013 Starsign of the month... Scorpio (23rd October - 21st November)
here are a few famous faces you share your sign with
by James Christie n For details of private readings phone 07884 107100 or 01423 339770 Email: jcp@magepublishing.co.uk
Scorpios are some of the deepest and most volatile people within the zodiac spectrum, and as such this promises to be a very eventful month with some very high highs and a few very low lows. There is some change in the wind where jobs and careers are concerned, and in this department you seem to be more or less in control. A key decision gets made around the 23rd/24th/25th that sets something in motion. Christmas plans will be affected by this decision, and you’ll not be 100% popular with everyone. Where you are not so in control is emotional and sexual situations. Your head does battle with your heart and you’ll be hard pressed to see the woods for the trees. There is some confusion with regard to what is a practical possibility and what is just a dangerous dream. Having said that, you will be determined (and quite rightly so) to ignore any words of advice that you receive, either from your friendly neighbourhood astrologer or your best and closest friend, if the advice goes against the grain of what your instinct and intuition is telling you. It’s also a fruitful month for those seeking to enhance their psychic ability and to develop their spirituality.

(22nd November - 21st December)
(22nd December - 19th January)
(20th January - 18th February)
(19th February - 20th March)
This promises to be a bit of a tough month for many Sagittarians; you seem to take two steps forwards and then three steps backwards. If some old lessons have not been learned, some old problems are probably going to resurface – and more so in domestics and emotions rather than jobs or careers.
A good month for DIY and home improvement schemes, and for those involved with the sale or purchase of property. Finances are quite strong, and getting even better when a partner puts more into the kitty. There is pleasure in finding something you thought you had lost.
You’ll be looking for – and finding – a bit more personal space and a greater sense of freedom. Travel opportunities tempt and titillate, and you’ll be given some insight into how the other half live. This doesn’t cause anything like envy, but it certainly gets you thinking along the lines of what’s good for the goose…
Do not be in any kind of rush. All things have their season, and this is when some well sown seeds start shooting up with great promise – but they do it in their own time! It is difficult to be passive when every fibre of your being demands action, and yet this is a time in which patience brings profound reward.
14
(21st March - 19th April) Still some bits and pieces to be sorted out on the job scene but overall you acquire a much clearer idea of where you are going long term, a major step in the right direction. Some favourable travel plans in the wind, with a boost to both your love life and your social life.
TAURUS (20th April - 20th May) Some decisions concerning health and health care – not a month to take up dangerous sports! Good advice and guidance from either a partner or a very close and trusted friend, which you should follow! An interesting reunion towards the month’s end heals an argument.
GEMINI (21st May - 20th June) You’ll be in a very impulsive mood, and while others may be alarmed, it will help you break free from old restraints. There are some very exciting romantic aspects piling up at this time, but while they are exciting, they’re also a bit dangerous!
CANCER (21st June - 22nd July) Despite some hassle with a fire sign between 1st and 7th this promises to be a good month for relationships and affairs of
the heart. Care should be taken, however, not to over-extend yourself on the work scene by saying yes to someone when really you should be saying no.

ARIES
LEO (23rd July - 23rd August) A very good money month, especially for single career-minded females. Gentlemen of the sign need to take the long view and avoid get-rich-quick schemes. All Leos need to be a little health conscious at this time, so keep taking the pills and don’t miss medical appointments.
VIRGO (24th August - 22nd September) Travel aspects are good, but check details and visas for passports. Some legal matters require your attention. An important association is formed in the last ten days of the month with someone who can open lots of doors for you.
LIBRA (23rd September- 22nd October) This may be a good time to play your cards close to your chest and keep your nose clean of other peoples’ problems. There is some challenge of an emotional nature to be sorted out between 20th and 27th when someone from your past turns up unexpectedly.

Well done
Grand designs Green-fingered goddess Sharon Beadnell certainly has a lot to shout about after winning the best small garden award at the York Housing Association Annual Garden Awards. Gardening guru Sharon first took up the hobby in 2000 and has since won five awards for her colourful arrangements. Sharon, whose garden on Trinity Lane has become an unofficial tourist spot for York, was thrilled with her award. “I’ve noticed that more tourists have been photographing my garden which is fantastic – tending it gives me so much pleasure and it’s wonderful that others are able to enjoy the fruits of my labour too,” she says. The awards also proved fruitful for John Roberts, whose hanging baskets earned him first prize for the third year running. Well done Sharon and John!

Making it look easy… Massive congratulations are due to Linkers Helen and Rachel, who, after months of training, exercising and talking about chafing, have successfully completed the first Yorkshire Marathon. Helen finished in 6 hours 22 mins, and Rach crossed the line in 4 hours 46 mins. Everyone in the office is really proud of the duo and all the hard work they’ve put in over the past six months. It’s incredible to think that it was only April when they started training, before which the pair of them would get out of breath when making a round of tea (only joking – they never made
the tea). We wish them all the best for their future endeavours. Mount Everest, anyone?
Children in need Hats off to City of York Council, which has been chosen to develop childcare across England thanks to the team’s expertise in the field. The council’s childcare service will now be part of a two-year government trial to help other regions develop their childcare hubs. • York was chosen thanks to our ‘Shared Foundation Partnerships’, a series of childcare networks across the city made up of schools, childminders, private nurseries and playgroups. The partnerships are working to ensure quality education for two to five-year-olds, supporting families and childcare providers. • Robert Wilkinson Primary School in Strensall will also be getting involved with the trial, working to engage local childminders with the Shared Foundation Partnership. n To find out more about the foundation, visit www.york.gov.uk and choose the Childcare section.

Staff at Cedar Court Grand Hotel and Spa were popping open the champers recently after one of their number earned an award. The hotel’s wedding co-ordinator, Evie Skaith, was awarded Most Outstanding Customer Service offered by a Wedding Co-ordinator at the North of England Wedding Awards, held at the National Railway Museum. The awards were organised by The Wedding Guide magazine and served to recognise outstanding customer service. The five-star hotel fought off stiff competition from hundreds of companies after being shortlisted into the final 18 categories. And that’s not the only accolade The Grand has received - turn to the Food and Drink section to find out more... Well done Evie!
Coffee saves lives Were you there? If so, well done and thank you. That’s the message from the organisers of the two Macmillan Coffee Mornings held at the end of September in Haxby and Wigginton. It seems that Haxby Memorial Hall and the recently refurbished Old School in Wigginton were both bursting at the seams with people eager to sample the delicious homemade cakes on offer and taste the freshly brewed coffee. By the end of the morning, when all were full and tongues had been firmly wagged in both buildings, almost £4000 had been raised for the cancer care charity. Congratulations to all involved.

2014 will see the Grand Départ of the Tour de France set off from the north of England for the first time ever – and in true Yorkshire style we’re going to be the first to host a 100-day cultural festival to celebrate! As the preparations get underway, our Nic chats to Gill Cooper, Head of Arts and Culture at City of York Council, and Councillor Sonja Crisp.
Don’t replace it
On 6th July 2014, over three billion pairs of eyes will turn to York. That’s when the Grand Départ of the Tour de France, the biggest annual sporting event in the world, will wind its way right through our city centre. It will bring an estimated £100million worth of economic activity across
Yorkshire and around 180,000 additional people to York. And as if co-ordinating the largest sporting event of the year wasn’t enough, Yorkshire will be the first ever location to host a 100 day cultural festival in the lead up to the big day. So, lots to do then?

think it is really going to pay us great dividends.”
Gill adds that she is ready to win the sceptics over. “I think part of the challenge is that there are probably people who are saying ‘In this time of trouble, why are we doing this? How much is it going to cost?’ People might be sceptical now, but by 6th July they’re going to be fantastically proud that we’ve mounted this event, and of the legacy it will leave.”
And the legacy won’t just mean attracting more visitors and events to the city – City of York Council and the organisational team are committed to ensuring that York residents feel the benefit, too. “One of the reasons that we pitched for having the Tour de France in the first place was to ensure that we got more people in York cycling,” says Gill. “We already have a fantastic bike rescue scheme, and a great initiative that Sonja launched where donated bikes are made roadworthy, but we can go further. We have it within our power as a city to make sure that kids have the opportunity to cycle in a safe environment.”
Leaving a legacy That legacy is already beginning to take shape, as Sonja explains. “The fact that it’s been announced in York has meant that we’ve already had international eyes turning to us and wanting to do business – this is happening already and we haven’t even had the event,” says Sonja. “Once everyone has seen how beautiful Yorkshire is from the aerial shots – and I know I’m biased, but particularly how beautiful York is – I

Up to the challenge Sonja admits that it will be hard work. “One of the challenges is that we are a festival city, and we can’t let the quality of our other festivals diminish. Everyone is going to be stretched, but with the Tour de France there’s the enthusiasm there from everybody. We really want to make this work for the city: it’s our time to be on the world stage. We have to make the Tour de France that comes through the city the ‘York’ leg of the Tour, so that it has an individual feel.”
Gill adds that several events have come to York as a direct result of the Tour. “Both the Skyride in September and the National Circuit Championships back in July never would have happened if the Tour wasn’t coming to us, and more of that will happen once we’ve hosted the Tour. We’ll also have a load of people who will want to cycle the tour route, which will have an impact on our cultural tourism.”

See how many of these you can guess correctly! 1. How many kilometres does the whole race cover? 2. How many hours of TV coverage on the Tour are broadcast annually? 3. When did the Tour last visit Britain? 4. Who was the first Briton to win a stage of the race?
A Grand Day Out [cont.] What was your first bike? Remember your first bike? Gill does. It was a red 20 Raleigh that she had from the age of eight until she went to university – and which she then donated to an order of monks in Scotland. “There’s probably a monk

riding around somewhere on it now,” she laughs. “I think everyone has a story about their first bike. But wouldn’t it be lovely if your first bike became someone else’s first bike?” And, Sonja says, the legacy even goes beyond cycling. “It’s not just a cycling
legacy – it’s almost like the York 800 legacy. Out of the cultural aspect of this, in animating the route and getting volunteers and communities involved, I believe that we will get more ideas for festivals, as we did with York 800.”
5. On average spectators travel 130km to see a stage of Le Tour – true or false?

Sonja adds that York is particularly blessed in the cultural department. “We have a city that seems to live, breathe and breed culture, so I think we’re streets ahead of most places with anything we start like this,” says Sonja.
Valiant volunteers And alongside the creative types, Sonja sings the praises of the city’s volunteers, who she says will be vital to the Tour. “We have a real volunteering mentality here. People really want to get involved with everything, so we’re never short of volunteers who all get a lot out of it, too. You can see the smile on their faces when they’re involved with it. It has to be a two-way thing, or it just doesn’t work.”

Bunting at the ready So, how can we get involved? Well if you’ve got an idea, the message from the council is if it fits, go for it – and a Royal Jubilee feel is actively encouraged. “We’re hoping people will plant lots of yellow flowers in their gardens so that we’ll have a riot of yellow. And of course we want yellow bunting!” laughs Gill. “We just want everyone to get involved as much as possible.” Both Sonja and Gill are excited to see what York’s creative community has to offer. “In terms of the cultural festival, having done York 800 last year we know how superb York’s creative people are at getting behind things that work for the city,” says Gill. “We’ve already had a huge amount of interest.”
For Sonja, she’s most looking forward to watching people’s faces during the event. “I’m a people watcher, and I can’t wait for the build up to the event and the joy on people’s faces when the day is there. I’ve seen it before with other events we’ve had, and it’s great to see the joy on the faces of the people involved, that they’ve been a part of something so big. Their pride makes me proud of the city. I must have one of the best jobs in the world with this portfolio.” n To find out more about the event, visit letour.yorkshire.com

Hooch heist
culture column
Gin & Dry, a bittersweet tale of a group of residents at a nursing home who fight the system to get their booze back for Christmas, is just one of the many fantastic films playing at this month’s Aesthetica Short Film Festival. Our Nic chats to Producer Michael J McMahon.
What is your favourite moment in the film? I have two. The booze heist is good fun, seeing elderly people get together and go after what they want. I think it’s just great writing by Oscar – the Writer/Director – and I also adore the ending, which I can’t say anything about without spoiling it. The film’s
message about respecting the elderly absolutely resonates with me. My grandparents are very important to me and have been a big influence throughout my life. Straight after reading the script I knew we’d make the film.
We have now HURRY started running our
Gin and Dry is still being shown at various film festivals around the world since being made in 2010 – did you ever expect it would achieve such success? Not really, we just wanted to give it a chance and it’s done fantastically well. Since Picturehouse Cinemas placed it in front of big feature films on the
run up to Christmas, it’s just gone from strength to strength. Oscar, Matt (fellow Producer) and I were also lucky enough to travel to Austin, Texas where Gin & Dry had been selected for their short film programme, and people were queuing down the street to see it! At first we thought they were there to see somebody else’s film.

How did your extras, who were from nursing homes themselves, react to the film? They loved it; in fact, some did so well that their parts grew into little cameos and a couple of them were so good they even made the poster. We were very happy to have Age Concern (now Age UK) involved; without their help I doubt we would have obtained the extra layer of depth. How did you get into working in film? I started off as a runner many years ago, and made my own short films and video projects in my spare time, whilst professionally I climbed the ranks at film and TV companies. Eventually I was able to set up my own company, Capture. Within my company, I produce and direct projects for clients such as commercials, online content and animation. It’s been great fun as I have much more command over my time.
You have had a varied career, turning your hand to editorial, production and direction. Do you think it is important to be flexible in the film world? I have found it very advantageous. It helps to build your knowledge of the craft and I find it only improves my film-making creatively and technically. Incidentally, having studied the careers of some of my favourite film-makers like Ridley Scott, Sidney Lumet, Marin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, all have worked in different roles.
the best of york
What is it about the film that you think appeals to audiences? I think Oscar has written a very bittersweet piece which is ultimately honest about the situation people like this are in. Why should people in their twilight years not be entitled to have some fun? At the same time, it can be a lonely time for some of these people and this is what I think Oscar has captured really well.
What is a typical day / week like for a film producer? I find it’s a balance. At Capture we have two sides to our business; The money making side, and the film division side. Doing things like commercials, visual effects and online content obviously pays the wages, and each project is also a chance to practice some form of film-making. In turn, we are also free to slot in the development of our film projects during quieter times. I’d estimate the working week breaks down to 70% corporate and 30% film projects. n Aesthetica Short Film Festival takes place from 7th-10th November. Music Corner
This month, Krystal shares her tips on dealing with bullies, and explains teenagers’ abilities to defy the cold...
Teenagers’ super human abilities to defy the cold…
are actually non-existent.
the lowdown: Band name: Paper Aeroplanes Genre: Folk-Pop Song to look out for: Little Letters. It’s got a really pretty upbeat sound, despite the dark lyrics. This gorgeous duo formed in 2009, despite playing together since 2005 and their experience shows in the great quality of music they showcase. If I had to describe them I’d say that they’re my ‘cup-ofcoffee-on-a-Sunday-morning’ kind of music. Catch them at Fibbers on 10th November.
“It’s November and winter is now officially in full swing, so how are all the young party goers still wearing little black dresses and polo tops?” I hear you cry. Well, believe it or not, there isn’t really a special teenage thermostat that gives us the ability to be oblivious to the cold. In actual fact, we are freezing. But, like the majestic peacock searching for a mate, would the young ladies and gentlemen risk loss of attention for a bit of body warmth? Probably not. So for now, it’s very much a case of grin and bear it.
The phenomenon of the Beer Jacket Alternatively, some people might opt for a less orthodox way of keeping warm, also known as the Beer Jacket. To get your own Beer Jacket,
you basically just need to pre-drink (the art of consuming alcohol before hitting the town in an attempt to save money) and ye shall feel no cold.
Now, by no means do I recommend the excessive consumption of alcohol. But, scientifically, it is proven to make you feel warmer – temporarily, and falsely at that. In fact, it could be pretty dangerous. Drinking alcohol causes a slight paralysis of the nerves and a temporary sensation of warmth due to heat leaving the body, hence the phrase Beer Jacket. Now you know… Are you going out in that? Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been guilty of seriously under-dressing in the
colder months. When Mum kindly suggests I might be a bit cold in what I’m wearing, I defensively state “No Mum, I don’t feel the cold, it doesn’t bother me, WILL YOU JUST LET ME LIVE MY LIFE!” and storm out of the house. Of course, this occurs ten minutes after sneaking the heating on full blast and shivering violently of course. Sorry Mum! Now, however, I understand that there’s no need to be uncomfortable, so I go out in my flat pumps, tights, jacket, hat, scarf – heck, let’s put some gloves on too. I heard there’s a cloak room in Fibbers and I’m going to damn well use it.

From the 18th – 22nd November it’s Anti-Bullying Week. Dealing with bullies can be a difficult experience, but despite the fact you might feel like you’re the only person in the world who this is happening to, you’re not alone! A study conducted in 2010 reported that at the age of 14, 47% of children reported being bullied at some point and I know from personal experience that it can be pretty tough at school.
Don’t give the bully any attention, because I know from past experience that most bullies are simply attention seekers trying to get everyone to look at them. Be brave, don’t speak to them and walk away. This is sometimes harder to do than losing your temper, but chances are they’ll get bored if they don’t get a reaction.
Fear not! I’ve put together a few of my own personal tips to try and help you through.
I know it sounds hard to do when you’re worried, but remember that bullies are only taking out their own insecurities on someone else. And, just in case no one told you, you’re perfect just the way you are, whoever you are. Don’t let anybody else tell you otherwise!
Tell an adult you can trust. My mum used to say a problem shared is a problem halved, and she wasn’t wrong. If you tell someone – it could be a teacher or your parents – then they might be able to resolve the problem for you without the bully knowing who told them.

In the ring
Local sport: Dean the machine!
entered the ring with nervous energy, but soon got down to business as the fight began at a frenetic pace with both boxers engaging in a toe-to-toe scrap. The second round saw a similar pattern emerging with both men continuing to produce a war, well appreciated by the partisan Yorkshire crowd. Both Croft and Zaszlos had successful spells at different points in the round, but going into the second half of the fight in this four rounder, it was Croft who began to assert authority, propelled by his incredible engine.
Two months ago, did a special feature on the city’s latest boxing protégé, Dean Croft, and I was lucky enough to be present at his debut at Barnsley’s Metrodome in late September. Facing unbeaten local favourite Jason Zaszlos, Croft
Croft began to produce impressive combinations, whilst having enough nouse and the skill set to slip shots from his tired opponent. In the fourth and final round, Croft could sense victory in sight and produced what is arguably his best work, unleashing punishing shots that continued to swing the fight in his favour. However,
At this point we were supposed to know who the undisputed British Heavyweight Champion was after the hugely anticipated David Haye – Tyson Fury clash. Unfortunately Haye had to pull out due to a nasty looking eye injury with the bout rescheduled for February. I had to laugh when I saw someone tweet that on his first outing since the call off, Haye had arrived back from the corner shop unscathed; apparently it was the first spar he had been in and not been cut.
30
as an away fighter, boxing politics often take precedent over a referee’s decision, so it was with baited breath that the points card was announced… “39-37; the winner from... York, Dean Croft”. It was a deserved victory for the man from York, who told me that he has things he thinks he can do better on, such as his accuracy and timing of shots, but thoughts soon switched to building on this win and who he can face next. He was keen to thank all those who had supported him,
his sponsors, DKM Builders and his friends who travelled from York. With Graham Fearn back on the road and Harry Matthews looking to resurrect his career at Super Middleweight, Dean Croft is adding his name into the mix. At 28 years old, and with a limited amateur career and offers to continue fighting as an away fighter, it will be a tough road for the pro raised in Haxby. However no one can ever take away the feeling of his arm being raised in his first professional fight.
World cup woes World Cups are something that I used to barely be able to sleep before, yet after England qualifying for the most elite football competition I think I am more excited about Sky showing another rerun of the first series of An Idiot Abroad. I don’t know whether it is because I think there is more chance of the next series of ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’ actually including a full cast list of people I have heard of than of us winning; the fact no European team ever wins tournaments in South America; or that our keeper, Joe Hart, has suddenly become inconsistent since he did those shampoo commercials (my dad points out that Hart used to be ‘Head and Shoulders’ above the rest). Whatever it is, I am sure that World Cup fever will grab me between now and Brazil 2014 and perhaps this time with the hype died down, we may actually have success – or at least be able to take penalties.
City life As for York City, things have picked up significantly since my last column where entertainment value was about on a par with the new Miley Cyrus album, but the 4-2 victory over Portsmouth certainly raised the spirits in a game that could have easily been 10-2. When you look at the whole year, the Minstermen are still in a good position when you consider the non-league years, and now back in football league – they have at least stayed up longer than the York wheel! Nigel Worthington’s men have home fixtures this month against Plymouth Argyle on 16th November, and then Rochdale on 30th, where they will look to continue their steady rise up the table.

1923. They had little experience in managing a business, however, they did have Walt’s dream of creating happiness through entertaining experiences, and Roy’s business background. That combination of talents was the foundation of Disney’s management style. It included elements of creativity, innovation, risk-taking and finding employees who would help make the company’s dreams a reality.
Disney Institute, the training arm of Disney, is coming to The Royal York Hotel & Events Centre on 13th November, to deliver ‘Disney’s Approach to Creating a Culture of Service Excellence’ programme, tailormade with topical and relevant UK business examples. First Class Training Academy will host Disney Institute and will be inviting customer-facing teams and managers to learn from worldclass specialists in customer service and management techniques. This unique program focuses on repeat business, customer service and brand loyalty, and is designed to make businesses stand out from the crowd despite the recession. Delegates will learn from the best with an intensive focus on ‘Disney's Approach to Brand Loyalty’, ‘Disney's Approach to Quality Service’ and ‘Disney's Approach to Creativity and Innovation’ policies, and practices that have kept them at the top of their game for over 85 years. Clients will gain insights to anticipate and exceed customer expectations and
improve consistency by establishing excellent quality standards. The programme offers achievable, adaptable tools for delegates to take back to their organisations to make long-term improvements. Disney Institute Facilitators are highly entertaining, and their events fun and interactive. Perfect combination Walt Disney and his brother Roy founded their animation studio in

This month we fly in the face of convention, laugh at electricity and pull silly faces at plug sockets. That’s because we’re taking a look at some hot new gadgets that don’t require batteries. You can build a boat, a car, a walking machine... heck, there are a tonne of ways to enjoy this clever mechanical gadget. If you’re going whole hog on this ‘no battery’ thing, then how on earth are you going to tell the time? You can’t use your phone and most other clocks are powered by batteries. Fortunately the horologists* at Time Out Watches on Spurriergate can help, supplying you with an Automatic Watch from Bering. Not only are the timepieces water resistant and made from shock-proof steel, they will even wind themselves as you move. Just moving your arm about during the day will power your watch, keeping you abreast of the correct time. If you’re worried you don’t move about much, we recommend waving at passing aircraft whenever possible. £399. Gadget rating 9/10. Available from Time Out Watches, Spurriergate. Mum’s not
Remember Krystal’s column last month? She has been learning to drive recently and whenever possible getting lessons from her mum. But, thanks to a survey carried out by Admiral Insurance (Stand up, salute; “Admiral Insurance”) it has finally been confirmed that parents don’t make good driving instructors. Obviously. Half of all the teen learner drivers quizzed said that they were overly cautious or couldn’t concentrate due to being worried about being shouted at by mum or dad. Also, half of the parent-instructors stated that they too were worried about passing on their bad habits. Our solution? Get a properly qualified instructor to teach you, kids. And remember that being good at the video game Grand Theft Auto doesn’t mean you’ll be a good driver. Howard.

“OoH, there's one...”

Last month we featured Britain's most expensive parking spot; a £300,000 patch of tarmac in London. This month we're taking a look at Britain's smallest parking space; nine inches of unrestricted parking in Burry Port, Wales. As you can see in the picture, a gap of just nine inches has been left between two sets of double yellow lines, making it a perfectly legal parking space. Locals have been having a bit of fun at Burry Port Council's expense by leaving toy cars in the spot. Ha, those guys... We however think that it must be a move by the Welsh assembly to encourage citizens to use pogo sticks.
lendal bridge
update
So, after a couple of months of restricted access, how is the Lendal Bridge closure going for you? Figures released by City of York Council revealed that during the first week of the bridge being closed to motorists during 10.30am-5pm, more than 1000 each day people crossed the bridge anyway, either because they ignored the warnings or were unaware of the closure. If that continues, the Council estimate they could be making £420,000 in fines each week! During the first week that an amnesty on fines was created to allow drivers time to get used to the closures. That amnesty is no longer in place, so if you need to travel over Lendal Bridge during the day make sure you know an alternative route. n For advice, visit www.york.gov.uk

Snow problem
It’s that time of year again when the threat of snow lingers all around and every last one of us prepares to panic as infrastructure, transport and good moods fail. So how do other countries deal with the cold weather? Sweden The Scandinavian country is much better prepared for the chill thAn we are, with most of their snow precautions being mandatory. As soon as the first snows fall motorists must by law fit winter tyres on their cars, local councils are legally obliged to keep roads clear and shop owners are responsible for keeping the pavement in front of their premises hazard free. Due to these measures, nothing stops, schools remain open and buses actually run. We know, buses running during the snow! Canada The snowiest country in the world knows a thing or two about dealing with sub-zero temperatures. During winter drivers know they must take different routes to allow snowploughs through, giant ice-melters are dispatched to runways and millions of snow shovels are made ready for public use. Speaking of which, the average life of a Canadian snow shovel is just two and half years. Compare that to the one Howard’s dad has had in his garage since 1979 and its obvious our colonial cousins do a bit more shovelling.

Into the Woods Ideally at this
time of year we’d like to be holed up in a log cabin somewhere, but failing that the woodland trend is a great way to get your home in touch with nature. Whether you opt for a striking stag wall ornament or cute squirrel bookends, woodland interiors are big news right now and it’s bound to make you feel that bit cosier. We’re particularly in love with this antler chandelier from Next. Check out the little birds! Cute!

As the nights get longer, we end up spending more and more of our time in artificial light. Sitting under fluorescent lamps puts a strain on our delicate little eyes. Sob. That’s why we’re kitting our living rooms out with some soft lighting instead. With a couple of side lamps and some pillar candles on the coffee table, we’re already feeling much better, not to mention cosier. Low lighting is great for helping the body to wind down ready for sleep, too.
Pick a pot or two
Something about the colder weather makes us want homemade food. No longer will a pasta pot from the fridge do for our tea – no, we want fresh ingredients lovingly prepared in our own kitchen. Despite the fact that we can’t cook… Well, we can go some way to feeding this craving for comfort food by displaying our ingredients in a homely way; think jam jars, cake tins and spaghetti pots. And we won’t tell your guests that the wholesome looking chutney in that jar wasn’t in fact made by your own fair hands if you don’t. However, if you do fancy jammin’, this kit from Flax and Twine will ensure your preserves look pretty.

Hot Stove Stuff Who doesn’t love the look of a roaring fire. A fire provides the focus of a living room so you’ll want yours to look great. Consider a stove - these can be wood-burning or multi-fuel. They are clean burning and extremely efficient (some over 80%) and available in sizes and styles to suit most rooms and living spaces. Even if you have no chimney - a chimney system can be built for you. Gas stoves have the same styling as wood-burners but with all the convenience of gas. The log effects are fabulous and some even have remote controls, allowing you to adjust the flame and heat output from your chair. There are versions that work on a pre-cast flue, a balanced flue or even L.P.G. Don’t forget the option of electric either. An electric stove requires no flue or chimney and can be positioned anywhere there is a 13

amp socket. And that’s just stoves! For nearly 30 years Focus Fireplaces and Stoves have been the regions expert fire and fireplace provider. Gas fires remain as popular as ever due to the stylish and highly efficient models now available. Snug as a bug
Now that the weather can only be described as chilly at best (and downright nose-numbingly icy at worst), our top priority is getting a cosy place to snuggle up on an evening. And frankly, nothing other than a big squishy sofa seems to do the trick. There’s something rather comforting about watching snow fall or hearing wind whistle while you’re tucked up on a soft settee under some heavy knitted blankets inside, don’t you think? Head to our feature to find some gorgeous, snug home accessories.
What’s Not...
Bye bye baby It’s very nice that you’ve still got your daughter’s first painting up on the fridge, really it is. But now that she’s finished university, do you think perhaps it’s time to put it away? Also, you don’t need to feel guilty for wanting to redecorate her room. We’re sure that your guests will appreciate some tasteful bedding much more than the Hannah Montana bedspread. Especially after Miley Cyrus’ performance lately… Walls without borders Why did we ever think it was a good idea to divide our walls into two? Wallpaper borders thankfully fell from grace around the mid noughties, and blimey aren’t we glad. If you’ve still got a border lurking somewhere in your house, do yourself a favour and rip it down. You’ll feel much better afterwards, we promise.

radiate advice As you’re chucking away the soggy pumpkins and taking down the fake cobwebs, remember that 1st November is also Radiator Awareness Day. Did you know that by keeping your radiators in tip-top condition you can actually help lower your fuel bills? Here are our top tips:
Would one keep the noise down?
Bleeding ‘eck! Air can get trapped inside your radiators, stopping the hot water from filling all the metal pipes and resulting in a colder, more wasteful heating system. Use a bleed key on a regular basis to let the air escape. Dust in the wind. A build up of dirt and dust behind the radiator can prevent the heat from escaping into your home and also cause allergy and respiratory problems for your family. Always make sure to vacuum around and behind the radiator. Reflections on life. Where possible fit radiator heat reflectors. These are thin plates that slide behind your radiators and reflect the heat normally lost through the wall upwards into the room.

If you've seen the Channel 4 programme Grand Designs recently, you might have noticed that they featured a house from the greatest city on Earth; York. Presenter and property guru Kevin McCloud (who Nic interviewed last year – they're like BFFs now) visited the York home of Martin and Kae Walker who over the past few years have been building their dream eco-house in Poppleton. The futuristic home features triple-glazed windows, solar panels on the roof and a unique water harvesting system. Designed by Martin and Kae, the idea behind the build was to make a house that could pay for itself as much as possible and many of the contacts the Walkers made to create the building were made at their local primary school gates as they dropped off the kids. You see, if you want something done, come to York.
New rad on the block. Above all, ensure that your radiators are not blocked behind furniture or beds. It’s always a good idea to make sure the radiator can ‘see’ the room it is warning, otherwise you’ll have a lovely warm cabinet and cold house. n For more information on keeping your home toasty this winter, talk to some of the nice energy specialists featured in these pages.
Do you have wealthy neighbours? How about having one that owns half the country and will be king one day? You can, if you can clobber together two million pounds. That is because the house next door to Prince Charles' royal retreat in the Cotswolds has gone up for sale for £1.95 million. The two houses share a fence, so on warm Sunday mornings when Charlie is mowing the lawn and Camilla is sunning herself while reading the latest Jackie Collins, you could have a chat and ask to borrow a cup of sugar. Or Cornwall. Yeah, ask to borrow Cornwall. See what he says.
Chill out Has a hard day at the office made you need an ice cool beer super quick? Simple – wrap a wet piece of kitchen roll around the bottle and place it in the freezer. It will be ice cold in no more than 15 minutes.
Play ball Save yourself a few pennies on drying sheets for the tumble dryer. Roll a sheet of aluminium foil in a ball and pop it in the dryer – it will eliminate static cling and do the same job for half the price.
Super soft Talking of frozen things, how many spoons have you ruined being over zealous with rock-hard ice cream? Be a Uri Geller rival no more – wrap your ice cream tub in an airtight freezer bag and it will be super soft next time you decide to take the plunge.
Tasty talons You’ve just completed your perfect manicure and the taxi’s turned up early. What’s a girl to do? Grab a bottle of cooking spray on your way out and spray over your nails to quickly set and dry your look. Gorgeous!
Perfect fit Ladies, be a modern day Cinderella with this handy tip to keep those blisters at bay. To ‘wear in’ a new pair of shoes, pop on a pair of thick socks and slip the shoes on, before blasting them with a hairdryer. They’ll mould to your feet in five minutes and save you a fortune on plasters.

f you are lucky enough to have storage heaters in your home and already enjoy the savings that off-peak electricity brings, then you too could save by simply updating your heaters to newer, more efficient versions. Savings could also be made by servicing your existing heaters to ensure they are working at their best. In truth, whatever system you have, unless it is brand new then you could save by changing your heaters or boiler. However, this saving needs to be weighed up against the cost of that capital outlay. We adore the look of plantation shutters – they evoke a feeling of class and sophistication, and add something special to our homes. But while they’re known as plantation shutters due to being widely used by homes in the deep south of America during the 18th and 19th centuries, we actually have the ancient Greeks to thank for their creation. Back in ancient Greece, buildings generally weren’t pleasant places – you either had to deal with the elements coming through any openings, or bear the stifling heat of an enclosed space. The clever old Greeks invented shutters to deal with the problem, and were able to control the light and climate inside their homes. We may need to thank them for the invention, but nowadays we have Shutterly Beautiful to thank for the gorgeous modern options which are available to adorn our homes. Want to make your garden into a winter wonderland? Make your own gingerbread house bird box!
Our feathered friends will need somewhere to keep warm during the winter months, and what better abode than a gorgeous gingerbread house? Obviously an actual gingerbread house might be slightly impractical, so you’ll need to make yours out of wood. Here is a basic guide on how to create a home that your beaked buddies will love. Step one: cut out your wood into these shapes,
You will need:
ensuring that the sides are the right size to fit together:
3 Wood, at least 15mm thick (not metal or plastic, as this will make your box too warm) 3 A jigsaw (the cutting kind, not the puzzle!) 3 Nails 3 Brass or plastic hinge 3 Wood paint in a range of colours – the main ones to aim for are orange, white, green and red.
52
Pentagon x2 – these will create the front and back. Rectangle x5 – these will create the roof, sides and bottom. The width of the rectangles should match the width of each side of the pentagon. In the rectangle which will make the bottom, drill a few holes to allow any rainwater to easily drain out. Square/smaller rectangle x1 – this is for the front panel. Ensure that it is 100mm high to attract robins, who prefer open fronted bird boxes.
Step two: Now it’s time to get creative. Cover the front, sides and bottom in orange paint and try a
contrasting colour for the roof – white could be good for a snowy effect. When dry, add the details such as doors and windows, and perhaps draw a Christmas tree or snowman on the sides.
Step three: When your masterpiece looks pretty enough, put it together. Attach the hinge to one of the roof pieces, and nail all of the bits together – apart from the hinged piece, which you will need to use to open the box. Put up your birdhouse using galvanised wire or screws, and try to site it somewhere that has some coverage, as robins prefer this.

Shed
Did you know that your favourite magazine spends some time in a shed before it lands on your doormat? Our distribution duo, Jon and Gary, spend rather a lot of time in that shed – and it got us to thinking about other awesome outhouses. Get sheducated!
gardening
Get your shed in the game Sheds aren't only great for keeping the rain off your mower – they can also be put to a multitude of uses. Roald Dahl famously wrote all his classic books in his garden shed, and after a noisy day in the Your Local Link office, Nic and Howard can see why. Putting up a shed at the end of the garden makes for the perfect escape from the family if you want some quiet time. A desk and an extension cord fed from the house can turn any shed into a brilliant office.
Shed of the year Each year, thousands of shed-oholics compete for the coveted title of Shed of the Year. Unique designs, clever constructions and bizarre uses are all welcome with prizes awarded for innovative thinking. The winner of the 2013 competition was Welshman Alex Holland’s boat roofed shed, which not only featured an upturned boat for a roof, also had a solar panels to generate electricity and a crown. Because he could, we suppose. n Fancy entering your shed in 2014? Visit www.readersheds.co.uk
If you're arty then perhaps the shed could become your new studio; a place to get away from it all and lose yourself in your creative endeavours. And chaps, if all those tools you got for Christmas are still sitting in the shed unused, why not sell them all, buy a big TV and transform the old hut into a man cave?
Shed fact: York’s own Britpop rockers Shed Seven named themselves after an actual shed. On a return train journey to York station they spotted a building by the side of the tracks marked as ‘Shed 7’... the rest is rock history. Its a good job they didn’t see the sign for the toilets first.

In good company
As well as Roald Dahl, there have been lots of other creative people for whom their shed was like a second home. Writer George Bernard Shaw completed most of his work in his shed. It was built on a turntable so he could move it as the sun moved through the sky. Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters created the early sounds for the album Dark Side of the Moon in his garden shed. Virginia Woolfe wrote most of her work in her potting shed in Sussex. It’s also where she penned her suicide note. Dylan Thomas wrote in his shed at his home in Wales... perched on the edge of a cliff!

As winter finally sets in, there is still plenty to see in that old back yard. Animals There are lots of new bird species to watch out for this month, as flocks return to Britain from colder northern regions. You may see more geese and ducks, as well as redwings, bramblings and fieldfares. If you have a bird bath then make sure it is clean and filled up with fresh water because, as the frosts begin, they’ll be looking for places to have a drink. Plants As most of the leaves will have fallen by the end of the month, it might be worth considering building up a pile somewhere in the garden; hibernating animals will thank you for it. Apart from that, keep an eye out for flowering ivy as it is truly beautiful. Your lawn will probably need one final cut this month, but remember not to trim it too short as that too will make for handy winter homes for wildlife.

FOCUS ON:
autumn berries
The botanical boffins at Dean’s Garden Centre give us the low-down.
Autumn is the season of “mist and mellow fruitfulness,” wrote john Keats in 1820, and ornamental berries have a large part to play in the autumn garden. Often overlooked in favour of bright fiery foliage colour, the fruits and berries can be equally colourful, and usually have a much longer season, often persisting well into the winter months. As well as providing a burst of colour in the garden, they also serve an ecological purpose as a ready source of food for birds, small mammals and invertebrates in the garden.

Dead man’s fingers
Some of the earliest berries to ripen are those on the mountain ash trees (Sorbus). These usually start to turn during mid-August, in a huge range of colours including bright red to orange, pink, yellow and white. They are a particular favourite of blackbirds and thrushes, with the red and orange varieties being eaten first. ‘Autumn Spire’ is a relatively new,
A plant with unusual fruits is Decaisnea fargesii, otherwise known as ‘Dead Man’s Fingers’. These broad bean-like pods are the size of a man’s finger and bright steely blue in colour, with a soft, squidgy texture. The plant itself is deciduous, with a broad open habit reaching around 3m (10ft) in height. Although quite easy to grow, the new
small-to-medium-sized variety, ideal for small gardens with its narrow habit, and the brilliant red foliage contrasts well with the abundant golden yellow berries.
growth requires some protection from any late spring frosts.
Crab apples As well as making tasty jelly, crab apples (Malus) are very decorative and often persist on the tree until the New Year. ‘Golden Hornet’ and ‘Gorgeous’ are particularly attractive varieties; Golden Hornet has a narrow upright habit and produces large crops of golden yellow fruit, while Gorgeous lives up to its name with abundant crops of glossy red and creamy yellow fruits – not forgetting the copious display of apple blossom they produced in the spring. When the apples do eventually fall, they provide a welcome boost for small mammals and invertebrates.

Firethorn
Cotoneasters
A reliable old favourite is Pyracantha or firethorn. This easy to grow, thorny, vigorous evergreen shrub produces an unbeatable show of red, orange or yellow berries. It can be grown freestanding at the back of a border, but is usually trained out against a wall or fence where the full effect of the berries can be appreciated. The large thorns also make it useful as an intruder-proof barrier. The best varieties to grow are the Saphyr series (Saphyr Orange, Saphyr Red and Saphyr Yellow) as they are resistant to the disease pyracantha scab, that has become widespread over the last ten years.
The Cotoneasters are also old favourites. These range in size from the compact, low growing C. congestus nana, that reaches more than 20cm (8”) tall, to the vigorous C. cornubia and C. exburiensis, that eventually form small trees. Probably the most familiar is the herringbone Cotoneaster, C. horizontalis. This deciduous shrub has a variable habit: if planted at the front of a border it has a horizontal low growing habit, but if planted at the foot of a wall will grow vertically with a spreading fan-shaped habit. Its impressive show of red autumn leaf colour and berries last well into December, making it an excellent multipurpose plant.

Stop the rot! A disease that a lot of gardeners are challenged with is the dreaded ‘onion white rot’ which is especially bad news for garlic crops and almost as bad for onions. This soil-borne fungal disease attacks the roots of several members of the onion family, killing the plant. Research suggests that the disease remains viable in the soil for 18 years, and once you have it there is nothing gardeners can do to get rid of it. reduce the risk Avoid introducing the disease to your plot by not accepting bare-root transplants unless you are sure they have been grown in clean, sterile compost, and only use certified disease-free onion and garlic sets. Growing in raised beds will also help to reduce the spread, as will the washing of tools and boots that are covered in soil from other gardens. Adopt a very strict composting regime when it comes to onion waste and dispose of it in your kitchen bin. Growing advice Some sources will advise not growing onions and garlic for the next decade or so, but that is not a serious option for most of us. Here are a few tips to help limit the effects of the disease: • Plant at wide spacings – 18cm (7”) apart in each direction • Adopt a five year crop rotation • Plant early and harvest early as the spores spread more quickly in temperatures above 10˚C (50˚F)

Ask Chris...
Got a gardening question?
Chris Brown from Brown’s Nurseries can help Q.
I am looking for a tree to plant in my garden. It’s a small area, so I would like it to flower and have fruit. Many trees produce attractive fruits in autumn, but few carry them through into winter, when they are of most ornamental use to gardeners. Birds also appreciate fruits during the winter months. Malus Red Sentinel is one of the best fruiting crab apples for the smaller garden; it develops a compact, rounded crown, and white flowers are borne in spring. In autumn, the clusters of glossy skinned, cherry-like apples mature to a bright red, lasting well into winter. There are also several Rowan trees that are popular for different coloured berries; one of the most popular of all Rowans is Joseph Rock, which has a characteristic vase-shaped crown that spreads with age. Its rich green, regularly divided leaves colour brilliantly in autumn, when the yellow berries that hang in drooping bunches ripen.
Q.
My lawn has patches of yellowing grass and also bare patches. Lately, birds have been digging pieces of lawn up, too. What can I do? This sounds like an attack of chafer grubs. They are soft-bodied, white, c-Shaped larvae, up to 40mm long with well-developed brown heads and three pairs of thoracic legs. They feed on roots, corns, tubers and stems of fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants – and they also attack lawns. When lawns are attacked by larvae, withered brown areas appear during dry weather and chafer larvae can usually be found by lifting affected turf in early autumn and spring. The turf may also be ripped up by foxes, badgers, crows, magpies, starlings and blackbirds when they feed on the grubs. Female chafer grubs lay eggs in soil near plants during early summer, and larvae hatch a few weeks later. Infested lawns benefit from heavy rolling in late spring to kill pupae and emerging adults, and adequate watering and feeding to encourage growth of the grass. When severe damage is caused, re-seeding in spring may be necessary. Alternatively, biological control with the nematode Steinernema Carpocapsae is possible on light soils but only when they are moist and warm, with a minimum soil temperature of 14˚C.
Q.
Can you recommend some nice roses for a pergola and also for arches? It is important to choose varieties of at least medium vigour as they will have to reach not only over the arch but also to the left and the right on the adjoining arches. The most suitable varieties for pergolas that have rather lax growth, and are therefore easier to train, are: n Adelaide D’Orleans n Francis E Lester n Iceberg CLG n Malvern Hills For arches, always consider the height of the arch when selecting roses. Very vigorous arches will overwhelm the structure, so as with pergolas, they need to be reasonably lax-growing. All repeat flowering English climbing and rambling roses are suitable, especially: n A Shropshire Lad n Crown Princess Margareta n The Pilgrim n Super Dorothy

your garden
Hear Santa coming If you are doing those last few jobs around the garden before winter takes its icy hold, heed this. Did you know that gardening can be bad for your hearing? Lawn mowers, leaf blowers and hedge trimmers all produce a heck of a racket and produce sounds in excess of 100 decibels. As the safe limit for human ears is around 85 decibels all that work in the yard can be pretty dangerous, causing tinnitus and even more serious conditions. So if you are particularly keen to hear all those carol singers this Christmas, make sure you wear ear defenders while out greening your fingers.
Easy as ABC This month, the Askham Bryan Gardening Club will satisfy all green-fingered gurus once again with an illustrated talk by Vicky Fox entitled ‘A Passion for Heucheras’. Taking place on 19th November from 7.30pm at the conference hall at Askham Bryan College, the session will delve into the world of the native American perennial, a firm favourite of Vicky’s – she and husband Richard have held The National Collection of Heucheras at their Planagogo Nursery in Cheshire since 2009. New members, as always, are warmly welcomed by Askham Bryan Gardening Club. n Call 707208.

Feed the
birds...
The famous song in Mary Poppins implored us to feed our feathered friends, and now is the perfect time of year to start. Here are our tips on making a cheap (but very cheerful) bird feeder.
We’ve read enough Beatrix Potter books to know that animals love nothing more than snuggling up during the colder months. Here’s how you can help give all creatures great and small a place to live this winter.
What you need: An empty (and clean) plastic drinks bottle – any size; two pencils; string; sticky tape; paint and craft supplies; bird feed and nuts; and a pair of scissors. How to: Get an adult to help you cut a circular hole in the side of the plastic bottle. The hole shouldn't be too big, yet large enough for a birdie to comfortably reach in.
Get messy. A tidy garden isn’t great for nature as there are no places for them to hide away. Try leaving a big pile of dead leaves in a quiet corner or behind the shed – hedgehogs and other mammals will thank you.
Next, using the scissors once more, pierce the base of the bottle with a few very small holes to let any rain water drain away. Now make four more holes, two below the circular hole you cut earlier, and two more on the other side of the bottle. Insert the two pencils into these new holes and cross them in the middle to create an 'X' pattern. Secure the pencils with the sticky tape, and hey presto: the birds have somewhere to stand! Now comes the really fun part. Use your paints and craft supplies to decorate the feeder however you like. Glitter stuck on with PVA glue looks great on the transparent bottle.
Home for the winter
An ice-breaker. If you have a pond, try to ensure the water does not freeze over. Toxins can build up in ponds that have frozen, making it a dangerous place for fish and frogs who may be hibernating at the bottom.
Unscrew the lid of the bottle, insert one end of the string and then close it again. Then fill it with the bird feed and nuts to just below the circular opening. Use the string to hang the feeder somewhere you'll be able to see it all winter... and have fun!
Bird is the word. Have a go at making the bird feeder we mentioned earlier but also try to build your own bird house. These are really simple things to make out of wood and there are loads of how-to guides online – as well as a very special one in our Gardening Guide! n For more advice on helping wildlife this winter, visit www.rspca.org.uk To find out how to make your own ‘gingerbread’ bird house, head to the Gardening Guide!

okay to live outside during the winter months?
My advice to owners would be to provide a safe, secure bolt hole for your dog to retreat to when the fireworks start. This could be under the stairs, bed or kitchen table, or wherever your dog feels comfortable. Don’t shut doors in the house, especially if you have to go out, as your dog may cause trauma to themselves trying to get through those doors to their preferred bolt holes.
Most rabbits are happy to be kept outside over winter, although in severe weather you might need to bring him indoors for some shelter. Make sure there is plenty of room for them to manoeuvre and the cage provides adequate shelter. Raise the cage off the floor to prevent damp getting into the bedding. Guinea pigs, however, should be brought into a garage or shed to provide shelter in the winter months.
Try to remember to take your dog out for a walk before dusk, as fireworks are less likely to be set off then. Closing the windows, shutting the curtains and putting the TV or radio on will help to block out some of the noise. The use of Adaptil may also be useful. This product mimics the comforting hormones the mother releases whilst she is lactating, and you can purchase it from your local vets.

Time to ditch the tank tops and the old divorce laws! The current family law procedures have remained unchanged since 1973. People now live very differently to the era when divorce legislation was first introduced, in an age when T. Rex and Alvin Stardust topped the charts! Family law should reflect how people live their lives now.
What is mediation?
Not all divorces require the need for lengthy court proceedings, and separating couples should consider modern alternative dispute resolution methods. One alternative method is mediation. Many people are not aware that whilst legal aid is not available for divorce it is available for mediation.
Whilst it may seem daunting to speak face to face with your ex-partner whilst emotions are running high, the mediator is there to help keep the parties focused, concentrating on what really matters.
Family mediation assists couples dealing with separation or divorce in a non-judgemental or confrontational way. The mediator remains completely impartial; they are independent and unable to provide legal advice to either party, although they can provide legal information.
What happens at mediation? Both parties separately attend an initial meeting to discuss what they hope to achieve from mediation. Once it has been established that both parties are happy to proceed with mediation, regular meetings take place until an agreement has been reached. The mediation process is normally around three to five meetings and the duration of each meeting is usually one and a half hours.
30 Minute Consultation
What are the advantages to attending mediation? • Mediation eases the pain of family breakdown as it reduces tension and hostility; • Parties are helped to make informed decisions; • It keeps a communication channel open and helps build on a future relationship, which is especially useful where children are involved; • It is less expensive than negotiating through solicitors and attending court; • It helps children by showing parents working together to resolve issues in a non confrontational way; • It allows the parties to retain control over the outcome (and not a Judge) whilst working at a pace that suits both parties. How much will it cost me? I am a Solicitor, Partner and Head of Family Law. I am also a member of Resolution and a Qualified Mediator. I charge £100 plus VAT per person per hour. I offer the first meeting free of charge and I will explain the benefits so that you can decide if mediation is beneficial to you. I also offer evening appointments and Saturday appointments upon request.

Fortunately these days I don’t have to say things out loud and just do the words for money (these words, in fact. And these) which makes working from home very doable. The other day, as I was sitting in my study at home, wearing only my pants and enjoying the silence (in the office Dave the Designer likes listening to dance music. He doesn’t even dance to it!)I got thinking about how we’ll all work in the future. Remote control Writing is easily done remotely thanks to the internet. I write a piece of brilliant editorial and then email it to Nic back in the office. Nic then replies with a string of expletives and
Will our shopping be delivered like the mail by a hovering robot that also trims your hedges while discussing your PPI claim? All hail I look at my children and wonder what they will do for jobs in their future. Although I’m quite sure that my three year old daughter will be some kind of tyrannical dictator, will she be able to conquer nations, subjugate people and generally be a bossy boots from the comfort of her own home?
a list of corrections I have to make. Job done. Poorly. But what about other jobs? Could Brenda the Asda checkout lady ever do her job from home? I occasionally like to freak Krystal out by talking about how in the future
there won’t be any shops as we will get all our stuff delivered by Amazon or make it ourselves with 3D printers. But what jobs will there actually be in 100 years? Will Brenda be replaced by Bren-Bot 3000, or will all checkouts be those self-service ones?
One thing is for certain though; that until they can build a procrastinating android with a penchant for coffee and Star Wars Lego, you can guarantee that I’ll be right here in my home office, sitting in my pants and hiding from my daughter. I’m living the dream. So can you.

Time travel
with Howard Join me on a stroll through history. No pushing. This month I’m using my time machine (Photoshop) to transport you back to King’s Square around 1910. As you can see, in what today is an open area for performances, portrait artists and ice cream carts, once stood a ruddy great church. The Church of Holy Trinity was demolished in the 1930s and it’s because of this building that there are so many tombstones dotted about making up the pavement. It’s nice to think that where once people gathered to hear sermons about sin and burning in Hell, we can now see dancers and fire eaters. I like the present better.
And another thing...
… don't worry about unemployment. If I've frightened you with thoughts of one day being replaced by a robot, fret not. It seems that new kinds of jobs are being created all the time. Just the other week I heard about the Yorkshire Museum taking on a Wikimedian; a person whose job it is to upload things to Wikipedia. Just that. Don't be surprised if soon you see job adverts that say 'Tweeter Wanted' or even just 'Do Internet'. Anyway, I'm off to update the Your Local Link Facebook page. Then sit silently for eight hours.

Care in the cold If you’re 65 or over, don’t forget to get your flu jab this winter! Call your doctor to arrange an appointment.
Snow can offer lots of fun, but for elderly people it can mean being confined to their homes and struggling to stay warm. Read on for some tips on how we can all help our elderly neighbours this winter, and for some tips on coping in the cold on a budget.
Everybody needs good neighbours • Make the effort to get to know all of the elderly or disabled people on your street. Explain that you’d be happy to pick up any shopping or medicine for them if they can’t get out, and leave your phone number. • Consider getting together with your other neighbours to make sure that everybody who might need extra help is visited at least once or twice a day. • Even if your neighbour seems to have everything sorted, the icy weather can keep them indoors and they could feel lonely. A cup of tea and a chat can make all the difference. Look after the pennies… Staying warm doesn’t have to cost the Earth.
How cold is too cold? According to NHS guidelines, your main living room should be between 18-21˚C, and the rest of your house should be at a minimum of 16˚C.
• The cold weather payment scheme starts on 1st November, and if entitled you’ll get £25 for each week of very cold weather between 1st November and 31st March. Payments are made automatically, but if you want further information call 0845 6060265. The Winter Fuel Payment offers between £100 and £300 for people who were born on or before 5th
15 minutes drive from York to Selby
January 1952. Call 08459 151515 for an application form. • If you have an older tank, wrap it up with a British Standard cylinder jacket, which cost around £5 and can reduce heat loss by around 70%. • Draught excluder strips or expanding foam fillers can fill in the gaps around windows and door frames, and stop heat escaping. • Stock up on cardigans, blankets and cosy slippers. Also, look for shoes with a good grip for icy weather, and consider getting a serviced electric blanket and extra bedding. • Make sure you have plenty of hot meals and drinks throughout the day. Check our feature in your home section for tips on making your radiator more efficient! Help from the Alzheimer’s Society The lovely folks at the York and Selby branch of the Alzheimer’s Society are able to offer support and information for people with dementia and their carers. With activities, sports and reading groups, there are plenty of ways to get social that can also offer health benefits. n Call 658106.

Ivy Lodge, a long established retirement home in Haxby, has been synonymous with high quality care for the elderly for a number of years. However, now the staff have something new to celebrate, as the recent refurbishment of the former Edwardian farmhouse has gone down so well that residents have compared their home to a certain top London hotel. “We wanted to move away from the stereotypical image of what people think a care home looks like,” says Charles Heifferich, owner of Ivy Lodge. Charles adds that they’ve aimed to create an oasis of calm through the use of soft mink, stone and blue hues, as well as Shackletons chairs. “Shackletons provided us with furniture that is perfectly designed and adjusted to suit the needs and requirements of all of our residents, but not at the expense of design or comfort. One resident actually said they feel like they’re in The Ritz which is a huge compliment,” says Charles. n Visit www.ivylodgeretirementhome.co.uk or call 760629.

It’s not only King James I who should be thankful that Guy Fawkes was caught red-handed. Without him we wouldn’t have a lovely celebration to blast away the autumn night blues.
Here is a round-up of what’s occurring ‘round your way. the poppleton centre bonfire
Dunnington Bonfire & Fireworks
kaboom!
Kick off the season of fires and fireworks with Dunnington Bonfire. Now a mainstay of this time of year in York, 2nd November will promise an amazing display of pyrotechnic precision at the field on Eastfield Lane, and first-class entertainment is provided by musical maestros The Mojos. Also enjoy the beer tent, oodles of tasty food and a special prize draw to win an iPad. Tickets are available in advance from the Costcutter Supermarket in the village, or on the gate.
Great acts, great food and greater fireworks are promised for 3rd November at Rawcliffe Country Park. This year’s fully choreographed display of fireworks, lasers and lighting, synchronised to a specially commissioned music track, will all be viewed whilst wearing 3D glasses to create a unique kaleidoscope effect. The dazzling new dimension has been introduced as part of the firework display’s science fiction theme, inspired by the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who.

It’s taking place on 5th November between 4.30-10.30pm at York Maze on the B1228 near Elvington.
If you’ve got little ones, the special viewing area for families with children under the age of five will be a surefire hit at Poppleton’s fireworks display, kicking off on 5th November at 7.15pm after the bonfire is lit at 7pm. And for the grown ups, the mulled wine is sure to get everyone into the festive spirit! Everyone can enjoy the hotdogs and hog roast, and the band will keep everyone entertained until 9pm. Having fireworks display?
If you’re taking the plunge by having fireworks at home, we’ve gathered some tips to make sure you stay safe. Know the code – make sure your fireworks are safe by only purchasing ones with the BS 7114 code marked clearly on the box. Handle with caution – follow the instructions, light all fireworks at arm’s length and stand well back. Never return to a lit firework and do not throw them. Keep fireworks away from children in a closed box – do not keep them in your pocket. Take care with bonfires – keep them away from fences and sheds. Maintain the flame with firelighters, not petrol, and never ask children to add wood to the fire. Check for wildlife before lighting the fire.
Safety with sparklers – use gloves to handle sparklers and always keep a bucket of water close by to extinguish them. Children should be supervised and sparklers should not be given to those under the age of five. Learn the law – fireworks can be purchased by those over the age of 18 between 15th October and 10th November. It is illegal to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, with the exception of Bonfire Night, when this is extended to 12am. Laws apply for other festive holidays. n To find out more about staying safe this Bonfire Night, visit www.fireworksafety.co.uk

The Ice Factor is back this month at Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland in the Designer Outlet, and if you’re anything like us you’ll look like Bambi when on ice skates! We found some of our top tips to keep you safe in the rink. Dress to impress the best clothing for ice skating should be flexible and not too warm. Avoid jeans and anything that will take a while to dry. Consider thick leggings or thermal trousers, a t-shirt, jacket, gloves and a hat. Get comfortable use the rubber mats outside the rink to get your balance and try walking. Make sure your skates are tied tightly but comfortably. You could even try squats to prep your legs for the exercise! Step onto the ice use the wall to guide your way round the first time. Bend your knees slightly and lean forward. Relax your body and avoid ‘toe picking’, keeping your blades level with the ice. Lean forward with your weak foot and push off
Never been to York’s CHOCOLATE Story? Or maybe you’ve got a friend coming to visit who you want to impress? with your strong foot to build up your speed and confidence. Learn to fall it’s inevitable, so bend your knees, break your fall with your arm and make sure your fists are clenched. Get up by placing one foot between your hands and pushing up like a sprint runner getting into position. Stop! Once you’ve built your speed up and got into a comfortable glide, it’s important to know how to slow down. Bend your knees slightly inward to slow down, then push one foot outward, applying pressure to ‘dig up’ the ice. Et voila! Torville and Dean will have nothing on you.

Being a Funeral Director isn’t an everyday job position, but it’s one that Martin Rowley has wanted to move into for a long time. Having been a Chaplain and led services for around 400 funerals over the course of eight years, Martin was familiar with the business. Now, after years of working in the corporate world, he is providing the service he has always wanted to. “I wanted to create a safe haven where people can feel comfortable,” says Martin. And, after visiting the premises ourselves, we can confirm that Martin has certainly done that. “We like to talk to people about their loved one,” says Martin. “It’s important that we are able to
One aspect that makes Rowley & Sons different is that they are the only funeral directors in York to offer a package that takes care of all the necessities at a flat cost. “Our package includes a good quality oak veneer coffin,” says Martin. “I think coffins can sometimes be used as a tool to create profit, but that’s not something that we want to do.” Martin says that his job is incredibly worthwhile. “I think in order to be able to do this job you have to be a genuine people person, compassionate, a good listener and prepared to go the extra mile. I really feel as though I was born to do this.” And judging by the amount of thank you cards he has received, his customers think so too. n Rowley & Sons offer a 24/7, comprehensive and genuinely caring service. Fizzy fun! Sure, you could go out and buy your friend another bath set, but why not make your annual pampering present a little different this year? Bath bombs are easier to make than you might imagine – the basic ingredients are corn starch, mineral salts, citric acid and baking soda, plus your favourite essential oils and perhaps a drop or two of food colouring. To make your bombs extra special, consider using a mould to create pretty shapes such as hearts or flowers. Heaven scent Got a friend who doesn’t own a bath, but still want to make her some pampering goodies? Try your hand at perfumed powder. All you’ll need is some unscented talcum powder, a container with a lid and a small amount of perfume. Put the three together and shake for a few minutes, then check the smell and voila! For extra cuteness, find an old glass container in a charity shop to present it in.
Next stop,
Hollywood! Do you have a mini Marlon Brando in the making? Are they ready to move on from living room performances for Nana and Granddad? Luckily for them a new stage school has opened in York. The Pauline Quirke Academy has given youngsters between the ages of four and 18 a chance to shine since 2007, offering training in comedy, drama, musical theatre and film. Your little one could get the chance to see their work displayed at a local cinema, or even at the Empire Cinema at Leicester Square. Plus, students get the chance to perform at the prestigious Her Majesty’s Theatre, home of Phantom of the Opera. The York Academy is held at Huntington School under the guidance of Principal James Aconley, who is an established singer, actor, teacher and director in his own right. n For a free taster session or to find out more, visit www.pqacademy.com or call 0845 673 2022.

Tartan army Och, aye! Tartan is back with a vengeance. We think the trend looks best in pleated mini skirt form, like the gorgeous one pictured from New Look. It’s that time of year again, when blokes attempt (with varying degrees of success) to grow a moustache in aid of a worthy cause: raising funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer and mental health. Hot baths Not just a great way to keep warm without sticking the central heating on, hot baths are also wonderful for your beauty regime. The steam opens our pores and allows for a deep cleanse, and because we’ve gone into the trouble of running a bath we reckon we tend to spend longer pampering ourselves. Time to get the face masks out and exfoliating gloves on!
This is this month to step away from: Hooded shirts We’re very confused by this trend. Shirts which inexplicably has a hood attached to it. Why? Gents, please don’t ever wear one of these monstrosities.
Fake tan Sadly it’s time to put the fake tan away. Rain and fake tan don’t make a good combo – unless you want to look like you’ve got some kind of crazy skin disease.

ASK THE EXPERT
Hair and Beauty Q&A
Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas!
Q. I have age spots, can I get rid of them? One very common sign of aging is the age spot. Age spots are also known by many as sun spots, liver spots, lentigos, or lentigines. Age spots are flat, tan, brown, or black in color and appear on areas of the skin that have been exposed to sun. As we age, sun spots appear on the backs of our hands, our forearms, our neck, chest, and face. The pigment-producing cells in the skin are activated to produce more pigment by ultraviolet rays. While these spots are not cancerous, most of us find them unsightly.
Q. What is melasma and are there any effective treatments?
Melasma is a skin condition that is characterised by irregular patches of pigmentation on the face. The tan or brown patches often occur symmetrically on the cheeks, upper lip, forehead or nose. It is the symmetry of the melasma that distinguishes it from other pigmented skin conditions. In patches of melasma, melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) increase in number, and each of these melanocytes produces more melanin. An increase in melanin leads to the tan or brown discoloration found in melasma. We have had huge success in treating melasma with the following treatments: 3 Microdermabrasion 3 Chemical peels 3 Laser treatments
78
Age spots can be easily removed using a variety of different treatments including laser treatments and peels. Most people find they only require one or two laser treatments and they’re gone!
Q. What is Hydradermabrasion? Hydradermabrasion, also known as the ‘jet peel’, is a unique dermabrasion system that combines oxygen and water in a super fast jet for exfoliation, hydration and oxygenation of skin. This means no crystals are used which can sometimes feel scratchy on the skin. The treatment is ideal for those looking to freshen up and revitalise their skin, improve scars and blemishes and overall texture. A glycolic or hyaulronic acid mask can be applied at the end to help boost the skin further.
Offering a variety of Murad products, and with treatments ranging from facials and non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. n Visit www.skindoctorclinics.co.uk or call 633833.
Can you stomach this? Are you happy with your body? According to research carried out by Fitness First, the part of our bodies that we Britons are most keen to shape up is our tums. A whopping 35% of the men and women quizzed by the gym chain said they would love to have stomachs like famous models David Gandy and Elle MacPherson (the prior being the chaps, the latter being the ladies – we assume). After belly-busting, apparently we’d all like to improve our legs and then our arms. Listen up York – here at Your Local Link we spend a great deal of time watching, talking to and generally getting amongst you all. We think you’re gorgeous and perfect just how you are. Sorted.

For the majority of us, chowing down on nuts, fish, dairy products and eggs is an everyday occurrence. But for suffers of anaphylaxis, a condition in which the sufferer is massively allergic to certain things, these simple ingredients could be life-threatening. If you know someone with anaphylaxis and would like to know more about the condition and what you could do to help, here are some of the signs of a coming allergic reaction to watch out for:
Many sufferers of anaphylaxis will carry an adrenaline injector with them which, if used in time, will help alleviate the symptoms. If you or your child has been advised by your doctor to carry adrenaline, make sure the injector is close at hand all day every day – without exception. If someone with you has an anaphylactic reaction, help them as best you can to administer their medicine then call 999 immediately. Visit www.anaphylaxis.org.uk

By our Krystal! Macadamia Healing Oil Spray I used the healing oil spray after I’d blow-dried and styled my hair, and it immediately made my hair feel silky smooth and look shiny. It smelt great for the next two days, too. The great thing about this product is that it comes in a spray, so the oil is evenly distributed. It didn’t make my hair feel greasy at all. And although it is supposed to work especially well on fine hair, it worked brilliantly on my fairly thick hair too. Dead impressed! www.macadamiahair.co.uk 08448 403040

Philip Kingsley – Elasticizer
£15
This is absolutely brilliant! I left this product on my wet hair for 20 minutes and then used shampoo and conditioner as usual. My hair feels more resilient and bouncier, and the Elasticizer even seems to have restored some of my natural curl! What’s strange about this product is it doesn’t have a smell at all. However, it being completely scentless means it doesn’t clash with your shampoo and conditioner. I’ll definitely be using this again! www.philipkingsley.co.uk 0207 2377100

Heavenly Nails and Beauty Ever wish you didn’t have to spend so long shaving? Now you can wave your razor goodbye, thanks to the lasering service from Heavenly Nails and Beauty. How does it work? The machine uses Pulsar Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology to offer effective, virtually pain-free, permanent hair reduction. The Pulsar system uses an applicator to apply flashes of light to the skin, and the light is then absorbed by the melanin, or pigment, in the hair. The heat that is generated in the hair follicle then destroys it, and leaves it incapable of ever producing a new hair. Which means smooth skin for you! What is it used for? The Pulsar system is flexible enough to be used on large areas like the back and shoulders, as well as smaller areas like the face. And it’s not just effective in hair
reduction – the Pulsar system is also fantastic for use on rosacea, thread veins, acne and a range of other skin conditions. Book now! Marcelle will be welcoming people into her home on the first Monday and Tuesday of every month to help legs across York become fuzz-free – places fill up fast, so book in while you can! Of course, Marcelle will still be available to come to your home to preen you to perfection, providing a full range of nail and beauty treatments including tanning, waxing, facials and reflexology. n Visit www.heavenlynailsandbeauty. co.uk or call 07710 669945.

What’s on your face?
ross the globe are set the task of ac s ap ch ere wh nth mo the , Movember is upon us again er charities. If you are taking nc Ca te sta Pro for y ne mo g sin growing a moustache and rai late your upper lip properly. pu po to w ho on s tip h tas top r part this year, here are ou
>Healthy body, healthy tash > Moisturise. Not the most manly of activities, but by moisturising your mug the hair follicles will be stimulated to grow. This means more beard, faster. > Increase testosterone. The 'Man Hormone' testosterone is responsible for facial hair growth. To safely increase your levels try eating foods with lots of vitamins and minerals like leafy greens, eggs, liver, nuts and fish. Barbecue them for that added masculine feel.
All men grow facial hair at different rates. While some can sprout fine manes in a matter of days, others will struggle to get more than fluffy fuzz. If you are one of those chaps who long for a full and manly face of bristles, these tips could help you to blossom.
> Preen and pamper. Keep your tash clean and healthy – this will prevent hair loss, split ends (it happens guys) and thinning, therefore keeping your lip full and handsome. Use shampoo and conditioners on the area and gently massage in. Also remember to comb it each day. God, it’s great being a man!
Style your face But which style should you choose? With centuries of popularity behind it, the humble moustache has been styled in hundreds of ways, each more intricate and significant than the next. Here are a few of our faves, with a description of what kind of gent they would suit. The Painter’s Brush. A thick tash that covers the entirety of the upper lip, made popular by Tom Selleck in Magnum P.I. This suits guys who don’t care about styling too much and who just need a tash. Right now. The Horseshoe. This is when the moustache extends down and around the mouth, but does not meet up over the chin. Popular with American country singers and wrestlers, as seen in the picture of Hulk Hogan. A bold statement, the tash has the tendency to make the wearer look sad. Aww. The Pencil. Thin and neat, this tash is tightly trimmed and kept very straight. It suits the suave lounge-lizard, and was extremely popular with the likes of Vincent Price and Cary Grant. A lot of effort to maintain, The Pencil has a Great Gatsby feel but can also make the wearer seem a bit evil.

>Tashes throughout history If you thought the British Empire was built on clever military planning and successful trade routes, think again. It was our incredible moustaches that helped turn the map empire-pink. Here are other famous hirsute gents that shaped the world in which we live today. Be inspired. The Celts. Those blue-bottomed warriors that lived in Britain prior to the Roman conquest loved a healthy tash. In fact it was a sign of true virility for a Celtic man to pluck out all his beard hairs (ouch) and let his moustache grow long until it covered his mouth. It must've made eating soup tricky. Charlie Chaplin. The silent movie actor's signature little moustache stood out well in the black and white films of the early 20th century. Many say that Adolph Hitler took his facial hair inspiration from Chaplin, but we're sure that the iconic comedian could take a prat-fall better than the evil dictator. Salvador Dali. You might think his artwork was a bit bonkers (elephants
with really long legs, melting clocks draped over everything...) but you have to admit that his facial hair is amazing. Like a bull's horns, Dali’s tash is aggressive and manly and makes us want to immediately get one ourselves. Then melt some clocks.

The lovely folks at Middlethorpe Hall have a fantastic offer this month buy one Decléor Spa Day, get a second half price See the advert for more details.
She’s been good lately, so we packed our Kelly off to sample the delights of Middlethorpe Hall & Spa. She’s been smiling ever since. Here’s why… Set amongst beautiful grounds near to the race course on Bishopthorpe Road, Middlethorpe Hall remains one of York’s quintessential country manors – and has done since it was built in 1699. The perfect example of ‘William and Mary’ architecture, and styled after the fashion of Sir Christopher Wren, Middlethorpe Hall has always been the very first word in luxury; a tradition that continues today. Now a lavish hotel, restaurant and spa, Middlethorpe Hall boasts a relaxing atmosphere and staff who are welcoming and attentive to your personal needs. This personal attention can be experienced in abundance in the hotel’s spa that incorporates a gym, pool, steam room, sauna and whirlpool bath. What’s more, the spa’s experienced therapists offer a wide range of beauty treatments using organic products such as Decléor and Neom hand cream. All this is open to both residents and non-residents. The relaxing surroundings of the spa were certainly a stark contrast to the stressful hustle and bustle of the Your Local Link sales office, but Kelly’s joyful mood when she left Middlethorpe was further enhanced by the sight of

her nails. Kelly enjoyed a full Shellac and polish treatment which left her talons looking sophisticated and stylish. You can also enjoy this, and a massive range of colours and styles, for £39. With all this going on in a close and private-feeling space, it comes as no surprise that Middlethorpe Hall this year won both the Hotel of the Year and Restaurant of the Year awards at the Visit York Tourism Awards. Find out for yourself by booking your visit today. Trust us, Kelly has never been nicer. n Call 641241.

If you love her column… …let Donna teach you how to write. Not satisfied with merely being a best-selling author and writing for York’s best magazine, Donna Hay (AKA Donna Douglas, author of the Nightingale Girls series) has also now turned her pen-wielding hand to teaching workshops. On 16th November at The Grange Hotel, Clifton, Donna will be leading her practical, interactive workshop that offers writers the tools they need to kick-start a half-written novel that might have been gathering dust in a drawer for years. It will also give complete novices the confidence and inspiration they need to sit down and actually begin their first book. The course, organised by WriteStars, the writer-support company, is set in the hotel's beautiful Georgian library, with coffee, tea and a sandwich lunch served in the adjoining Drawing Room. n To book your place call 020 30787825.

Richard III (19th-30th November) York Theatre Royal and Nottingham Playhouse present this production which explores the parallels between the devious Richard, who is full of paranoia, humour and irresistible charm, and our modern world of political monsters.

AN EVENING OF BURLESQUE (30th November) Sashaying Royal Academy-trained burlesque bombshells slip into exotic character as smoothly as they slip out of the most exotic couture costumes ever to grace the stage. Prepare for evocative Arabian Nights, fabulous fan dancing fantasies and foxy 1940s sirens. It’s the slickest, wickedly wittiest, most delightfully choreographed cabaret spectacular of the year.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (13th December-5th January) New Pantomime Productions returns with the classic tale of Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs. This beloved family pantomime is certain to bring fun, thrills and festive cheer to all ages. Emmerdale star Adele Silva stars as The Wicked Queen, with Hollyoaks’ Marcus Patrick as the Huntsman.

Christmas – the sequel By the time you’ve organised the family visits, figured out when you’re going to fit in all of the festive drinks with friends and somehow managed to also do the Christmas shopping, it can be a struggle to find the time to fit in work, never mind an office party. Luckily, the folks at the National Railway Museum have a solution. Their ‘Christmas in January’ package is just £29.99 per person, which includes an arrival drink, a sumptuous all-you-can-eat buffet and DJ entertainment, so you can enjoy a post-Christmas party at a time that’s convenient for your company. What’s more, if you confirm your booking before 15th November the party organiser will receive a complimentary ticket. So, that’s one thing ticked off the Christmas to do list! n Call the NRM Christmas Co-ordinator on 686223 or email christmas@nrm.org.uk
Are you afraid of
the dark? Winter nesting If you are looking for the perfect retreat to withdraw to this winter, look no further than Crockey Hill. There you will find Swallow Hall Golf Club, and nestled within the beautiful grounds is the Swallow’s Nest Restaurant. Enjoy a complimentary blend of excellent quality, locally sourced (and wonderfully warm) food as well as fine wines, served in a pleasant, relaxing atmosphere. Should you be booking your work or family Christmas party then the Swallow’s Nest Restaurant would be perfect as they will be rocking away through to New Year’s Eve. On 14th December the restaurant will host a Christmas Dinner and Dance, so go along, enjoy a four-course festive feed and boogie afterwards at the disco. n Call 449240.
It’s Christmaaaaas!
As well as offering a free treat for Link readers (see below) York’s CHOCOLATE Story will also show you how to appreciate chocolate in a new light on 2nd November at the Tasting in the Dark event, taking place from 7pm as part of the Illuminating York festival. Apparently, it’s been documented that visual cues have an effect on how we perceive food, so the darkness will help visitors learn how to taste like a professional, picking up on flavours as diverse as citrus, vanilla and smoke!
Sorry to be so shouty, and you’re probably still cleaning away your Halloween pumpkins, but now is the time to get planning your Christmas party. We know of the perfect place to get in the festive mood that doesn’t involve a return flight to the North Pole. The staff of Oxo’s Restaurant on The Mount are set to welcome your party for an evening of fun, frolics and locally-sourced food. Their Christmas party menu features classic staples such as traditional roast turkey, parsnip soup and Christmas pudding, as well tasty alternatives like pan fried salmon and mushroom risotto – all to be enjoyed in the lavish surroundings. n To book your seasonal soiree today, call 619444.

Christmas may not be until next month, but there’s no excuse not to be prepared! Put your baking skills to the test with this beautiful Christmas cake recipe.
Pass the
brandy… 3 ¼ tsp vanilla essence 3 ¼ tsp salt 3 ½ tsp mixed spice 3 ½ tsp ground cinnamon 3 1tbsp marmalade 3 1 tbsp lemon juice 3 1-2 tbsp warm apricot jam 3 2 tbsp black treacle 3 100g chopped mixed peel 3 150g halved glacé cherries
3 7 free-range eggs (4 beaten, 3 whites)
3 100g chopped blanched almonds 3 200 g butter 3 200g brown sugar 3 200g marzipan 3 225g plain flour 3 600g icing sugar 3 800g mixed dried fruits 3 Brandy
Pre-heat the oven to 150°C/300°F/ Gas 2. Grease a 20cm round cake tin and line with baking parchment. Sieve the flour, salt, mixed spice and cinnamon into a bowl.
tablespoons of brandy. Wrap in foil and store in an airtight container, hole side up. You may want to add brandy to the cake once a week up until Christmas.
Cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl and then mix in the sugar, treacle, marmalade and vanilla essence.
When Christmas comes, decorate by dusting your hands and work surface with icing sugar and knead the marzipan until soft. Roll out the marzipan to fit the top of the cake and roll out the rest in strips for the cake’s sides.
Mix the whole eggs into the mixture at intervals. Fold in the flour mixture and then mix in the dried fruit, mixed peel, cherries and almonds. Pour the mixture into the tin and create a hollow centre. Bake for three hours and test with a skewer, baking for up to an extra hour if not ready. Leave to cool. Once cool, pierce holes in the cake and pour over three to four
106
Brush all over with apricot jam and place the marzipan on the cake’s top and sides. Cover the cake with a towel for one day. For the icing, whisk the egg whites, adding sugar at intervals to form soft peaks. Add the lemon juice. Ice the cake and decorate.
New kids on the choc
Being familiar with setting up a business from our Gini and Tracy’s spare bedroom, we have a soft spot for the guys at Guppy’s Chocolates. Having converted their garage into a mini chocolate factory in September 2010, Fran and Peter Guppy had to move to larger premises at the start of 2013 due to sheer demand. Now based at Clifton Moor, and with all chocolates handmade and packaged on the premises, the couple offer a deliciously decadent array of chocolates. Options include Yorkshire Honey truffles, chocolate bars with a hint of lavender and salted caramel chocolate shards. With Christmas fast approaching, we recommend heading to their shop at 5 Audax Close, Clifton Moor for some superb stocking fillers for the chocoholic in your life – and maybe even a treat for yourself! n Visit www.guppyschocolates.co.uk

Before we know it, it’ll be New Year’s Eve – so you better start planning the Christmas party. They offer a superb locally sourced, freshly cooked Christmas menu as well as the chance to dance the night away with their resident disco. With a choice of courses and meals to suit all pallets, the welcoming staff at Lady Ann’s are happy to meet your personal requirements for a fun filled festive event. n Call 611570.

A Grand year
Sometimes we just don’t have enough space in the Well Done section for these guys! Not content with one of their staff winning Wedding Co-ordinator of the Year, Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa have also been applauded by the Yorkshire Life Food & Drink Awards, winning Hotel of the Year. The judges were incredibly impressed, with Chair Annie Stirk calling The Grand a “classy venue.” And, as if those accolades weren’t enough, VisitEngland ‘Highly Commended’ The Grand at its national awards ceremony earlier this year. A very well done to all involved! n Visit www.cedarcourtgrand.co.uk or call 380038.

We suggest having one primary identity with two additional colour ways. Having different logos for each independent sector could become confusing and doesn’t allow for any colour variation within that sector. By having one primary logo and a total of three colour ways, we can ensure that we use the option way that best sits with the Independent’s brand colour.
