Welcometo

York!

This is a great time of year to visit our gorgeous city, least of all because this is where the first ever Easter egg was invented. It’s true... in 1798 a local woman called Esther Burnay decorated an ostrich egg and threw it at the Archbishop of York. The tradition soon caught on (the decorating bit, thankfully for the clergy of York not the throwing part) until it was decided to make the eggs out of chocolate following the Great Ostrich Draught of 1853. Incidentally, York is also where the first April Fool joke was cracked.

But seriously there are some great things happening this month. If you are here at the beginning of April then it really is important to get you, your family, your friends and any strangers you might meet, to Monk Bar and Mickelgate Bar from the 5th. Both ancient gateways in the medieval walls have recently been kitted out with new displays and exhibitions telling the stories of Kings Richard III and Henry VII. Considering the new museums have been created by the bods of the Jorvik Viking Centre, you know you’re in for a historical treat.

If you’re here at the end of the month, then don’t worry, you haven’t missed thing. You might notice that a few more people are wandering around with silly grins on their faces; this is because of the York Chocolate Festival. Taking place between 18th and 21st April, the festival will celebrate all that is great about York’s connection to choccy... with quite a bit of sampling along the way. For quality control, obviously. Whatever you do, keep us in your back pocket, and enjoy!

n The comprehensive guide to what’s on in York

Grand Opera House To book: 0844 8713024.

York Barbican To Book: 0844 8542757

Agatha Christie's Black Coffee (31st March-5th April)

Peter Pan (6th April)

In the first play ever written by Agatha Christie we are introduced to a character who went on to become the most famous detective of all time, Hercule Poirot, and the only fictional character ever to receive a full-page obituary in the New York Times.

Tonight's the Night (28th April-3rd May)

The smash hit West End musical comedy inspired by the songs of Rod Stewart, is the all-singing, all-dancing feel good show which went on to play sold-out theatres across the UK.

Annie (20th-24th May)

York Stage Musicals return with their brand new production of this classic Broadway musical. The show is guaranteed to be filled with the company's usual high energy cast, unique sets, live band and high octane choreography.

Tinker Bell, the Lost Children, Tiger Lily, Nana the dog, mermaids, pirates, Smee and, of course, the deadly Captain Hook. Starring comedy legend Bobby Davro as Smee and Dani Harmer as Wendy.

Joseph Rowntree Theatre To book: 623568

Aspects of love (31st March-5th April)

York Musical Theatre Company presents Andrew Lloyd Webber’s tale of love and loss across three generations of a family, set against the background of the cobbled streets of Paris to the mountains of the Pyrenees.

13 The Musical (16th-19th April)

Theatre Royal To book: 623568.

The world of Evan Goldman, a slightly confused pre-teen, turns upside down when his parents get a divorce and he's forced to move from busy New York to ‘the lamest place in the world’, Appleton Indiana.

The Play That Goes Wrong (8th-12th April)

The Gonodoliers (26th April)

This brilliant laugh-out-loud comedy performed by Mischief Theatre Company has enjoyed two successful runs in the West End. It was the sell-out smash hit of the Edinburgh Festival with sensational reviews and numerous awards.

Join the Jorvik Gilbert & Sullivan Company for an evening in the Venetian lagoon as they perform The Gondoliers as a concert performance.

Under Milk Wood (22nd-26th April)

Based on the book Anna and The King of Siam, the show follows the journey of an English teacher as she faces numerous obstacles in her quest to modernise the country of Siam and help The King’s children learn English.

An unforgettable journey into the roots of language and the soul of Wales. This new production marks the centenary of Dylan Thomas' birth in 1914 and the 60th anniversary of the play's British première. 18
