no fooling you Welcome dear friends! Whether you’ve come all the way from China, or just popped into town from Tang Hall, you’re going to have a great month. Yes, it is April, and yes it is traditional to spring a few pranks and spin a few yarns on the first day... but we’re not going to rise to it. We know, right. That’s called growth. Besides, what on earth is there to make up when York has so much going on, and so many bizarrely interesting events taking place? Fancy a show? The Grand Opera House is hosting the musical sensation Hairspray in the first week, to cast your imaginations back to the swinging sixties. And then later in the month you can don your flap cap and tweed jacket and head for the Ryedale Game & Country Fair. No? Okay, what about trains, then? The National Railway Museum is holding a special event this Easter holidays, exploring why choo choos are so darn exciting for kids. And everyone else, we assume. For another trip back into the past, head to the Racecourse for the Festival of Vintage, where you’ll find stalls, shops, music and entertainment from a by-gone era. And for an even bigger journey through time, the Royal Armouries in Leeds are holding their annual jousting tournament. We just hope you packed your best lance. And finally, those hoping to visit outer space, you can catch a lift on a real rocket ship, departing from the top of York Minster ever hour, for a round-trip to the moon.*

But why would you want to? It’s Hairspray! The Broadway musical Hairspray follows the plight of loveable teen-dreamer Tracy Turnblad, who is a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart. Performed by York Stage Musicals at The Grand Opera House, 27th-28th & 30th March-4thApril, the show follows Tracy as she becomes the unexpected star of local TV dance program, The Corny Collins Show, much to the frustration of the TV station’s villainous producer. With an original soundtrack of swingingsixties tunes, such as Good Morning Baltimore, Welcome to the Sixties, and You Can’t Stop The Beat, Hairspray will be sure to have audiences mashpotato-ing all the way home. n To book, call 0844 8713024. 6
