Enjoy a If you’ve been wondering what to do with the kids during the school summer holiday, we have just one word for you: York. Seriously, we heartily recommend you either rent a house in the city centre for the whole of August, or pitch a tent outside the Minster, as you’ll never want to leave once you see what’s going on. If you thought the incredible start to the Tour de France was all we had up our sleeves, think again. All that is great about Yorkshire is being uniquely celebrated at the world famous York Maze. The largest maize maze in the world, this year visitors have the rare

August opportunity to get lost while wandering around giant versions of Geoff Boycott, Jeremy Clarkson and Brian Blessed’s faces. Where else can you do that without first being shrunk by a mad professor? From your base in York you’ll be able to keep the kids totally enthralled with trips out to some great local attractions. At Allerthorpe Lakeland Park you can cruise the serene lakes on your own private boat (while dodging the kids’ attempts to soak you) and at Lightwater Valley Theme Park you and the family can scream away those lazy August afternoons.
The North York Moors Railway offers a far calmer retreat, and while you soak up the gorgeous passing scenery of the moors, the kids can soak up a fun-filled story or two about pirates, fairies and even Harry Potter. Whatever you get up to, have fun, be sure to slop on some sun cream, and cool down with a nice refreshing Yorkshire pudding.

Film
guide Guardians of the Galaxy In the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. If you asked Howard if he was excited about this film, he would nod manically and start to dribble. The latest comic book-to-movie effort from Marvel, this action/sci-fi/ comedy blockbuster features quite a few famous faces (and voices) including John C. Reilly, Chris Pratt, Benicio Del Toro and Glen Close.
The Nut Job In this animated comedy, Surly the Squirrel has finally gone too far with his latest caper leading to the animal community’s 32
winter food store being destroyed. Now exiled, Surly and his rat buddy’s collective nightmare ends when they discover a nut store to raid. Big names including Will Arnett, Brendan Fraser, Liam Neeson and Katherine Heigl lend their vocal prowess.
The Inbetweeners 2 Your favourite teenage mis-fits, Jay, Neil, Simon, and Will reunite in Australia for a holiday. Channel 4’s TV sitcom The Inbetweeners was massively successful and went on to spawn a movie of its own. For the sequel we’re assuming a similar level of toilet humour will be present, and if the trailer is anything to go by (where a rude word is shouted to group of Australian Aborigines), we’re right.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For Another sequel this month, albeit one with a tad more style and violence than The Inbetweeners. Just like its predecessor, A Dame to Kill For will be mix of interwoven stories telling the gruff tales of the citizens of Sin City, where the town’s most hard-boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants. Actors included Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Eva Green and Christopher Lloyd.

events Hotlist Lightwater Valley You are lucky people - you live in the best city in the world and have one of the greatest theme parks right in your doorstep. If you were hoping for a chilled-out relaxing summer, forget it as the kids will love to spend all their holidays screaming and shouting on Lightwater Valley’s awesome rides, just outside of Ripon. n Visit www.lightwatervalley.co.uk
Allerthorpe Lakeland Park If you’re wanting your day out with the family to be a little more relaxed (but not too relaxed) get yourself to Allerthorpe Lakeland Park. Spend a day cruising the huge lakes on a boat before making landfall in the play area. If you’re more of a landlubber, then perhaps petting the farm animals would be preferable, or maybe even digging about in the 34
giant sandpit? Whatever happens, you and the kids can enjoy a picnic in the lovely grounds (while most probably drying off). n Visit www.allerthorpelakeland park.co.uk
Easingwold Maze Just 12 miles north of the city you’ll find a great place to get lost. In the ten acres of Easingwold Maze you can search for clues and test your sense of direction. Other attractions include go karts, a giant inflatable slide, an inflatable fun run,
a climbing haystack, outdoor games and an animal pen for petting and feeding the animals. Take along a picnic, relax in the picnic area, and lap up all the ice cream you want. Sounds like a good day out - we’ll see you there. n Visit www.easingwoldmaize.co.uk

York’s Chocolate Story
York Maze
This summer get set for an entertaining and informative guided tour through the history of York’s most famous chocolate-making families and their finest creations. Running throughout the month will be all manner of fun and games (not to mention a bit of chocolate tasting - for quality control purposes, obviously) as well as a new exhibition commemorating the centenary of World War One, showcasing previously unseen artefacts and letters, which provide a fascinating and unique perspective on the conflict.
By ‘ech, tha must have been living under a rock if tha doesn’t know this year’s York Maze has been made into the faces of three of Yorkshire’s most famous sons. Geoff Boycott, Jeremy Clarkson and Brian Blessed are currently residing in a corn field near Elvington - albeit giant likenesses. As ever visitors can wander around the maze and get themselves truly lost (you can tell Jeremy Clarkson what you really think of him), before sampling the further delights of the maze. How about the Cobstacle course, bale mountain, and Kernel Kernal’s House of Cornfusion?
