Góðan dag! It’s a big viking-sized hello to you all this month, as February is the time of year when york really comes into its own. we’re a city well known for our bloody past, but many people have told us that they have been surprised how quiet and pleasant the york of today is, in stark contrast to what they had read in history books. That all changes in February. That is because the city, from 14th-22nd, will play host to the 31st Jorvik viking Festival; a time of year when the axes are sharpened, the chainmail is dusted off, and the beards are grown to extreme lengths! Get your longships at the ready, because you’ll be invading a city filled with Nordic craziness, from battle demonstrations and weapon making, to viking cuisine, songs, marches, talks, films, and theatre shows. we’ll be there to down a tankard of mead with you! but if the raucous vikings are all just a tad too barbaric for you, may we suggest an alternative? accompanied by a large live Orchestra, verdi’s masterpiece and best-loved opera, rigoletto, will be brought to life by The russian State ballet and Opera House at the york barbican on the 15th. There is also the Snowdrop Spectacular at burton agnes Hall, just outside of the city, for you to view the beautiful carpet of snowdrops this month. Surely more relaxing than chucking spears at one another.
