welcome to

York Normally in this introduction we welcome one and all to this edition of What’s On, and to the city of York as a whole. However, February might not have been the best of time to come to our fair city as – and we regret having to say this – the world is ending. It’s those troublesome Vikings you see; still causing bother in York after all these years. The streets will be filled with the sounds of ferocious roars and battle cries as Ragnarok, the fall of the Viking Gods and the end of the known world, begins

on 22nd February (which is, coincidentally, the first day of the 30th JORVIK Viking Festival). Let’s just hope those naughty Norsemen clean up after themselves. But February isn’t just about the apocalypse (thank goodness) and there are plenty of other incredible events to enjoy. York Dungeon are celebrating Valentine’s Day in their own unique style with the addition of the beautiful – and plague infected – Polly the kissing booth host, while any budding young train engineers should head straight for

the National Railway Museum for their half term event Train for the Tracks. Meanwhile there are concerts galore from BMS York, the York Guildhall Orchestra and the Benyounes Quartet, so anybody looking for a romantic and inspiring evening is surely in luck in this city. But whatever you get up to this month, have fun… and keep an eye out for any mad-eyed bearded Vikings. You have been warned!

grand opera house the magic of motown

The Magic of Motown

Theatre Royal To book: 623568.

Ghost Town

(12th-19th February) A young woman lies unconscious on the tide line. Joe stands over her watching, panicking. He is hiding a secret so dark he will do anything to make sure she won’t tell. Ghost Town is a new play about lost friendship, memory and what it means to be courageous, written by Nick Darke Award winner Jessica Fisher.

BRASSED OFF

(14th February-1st March) It’s 1992 and Grimley Colliery faces the threat of closure and the future of the brass band seems uncertain. With the miners torn between redundancy packages and the picket lines, bandleader Danny’s hopes of winning the national brass band competition seem like a distant dream. But the arrival of flugelhornplaying Gloria brings hope, romance and controversy to the Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse.

Hot Mikado

(4th-15th March) Hot Mikado takes the classic Gilbert and Sullivan tale and updates it to the 1940s style. Don’t miss this West End and Broadway Olivier Award nominated musical experience from York Light Opera. Young Nanki-Poo, the Mikado’s son masquerading as a Second Trumpet player, arrives in the town of Titipu looking for the beautiful Yum-Yum.

Grand Opera House To book: 0844 8713024.

Featuring two terrific hours of some of the greatest songs ever written, including That’ll Be The Day, Oh Boy and Peggy Sue.

(8th March) This all-star 2014 spectacular features more No1 hits than ever before, starring the music of the Temptations, Supremes, Four Tops, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie and more and marks the official arrival of Motown style, sophistication and musical brilliance to these shores.

Joseph Rowntree Theatre To book: 623568

Phantom of the Opera (26th February-1st March) An exciting new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s West End and Broadway hit, performed by York Stage Musicals. The famous score, including Music of the Night, All I Ask of You, Think of Me and Phantom of the Opera, is accompanied throughout by a live orchestra.

SHOUT! The Mod Musical (12th-15th March) It’s time to return to the 1960s with the juke-box musical SHOUT!, performed by York Stage Musicals. With crazy costumes and groovy hair styles, SHOUT! charts not only the music of the decade but also the changes in the lives of women.
