n July 2014
A wheely good month We can’t be sure how you arrived in our fair city, but we’re certain of one thing; you’ll probably be leaving on a bike. July is cycle-crazy here in the capital of the North, as on 6th July the second stage of the Grand Depart will belt through our winding and beautiful streets. You can watch it all begin at York Racecourse, or indeed catch a glimpse of the peloton as the cyclists dash through the city centre. The weekend of the 6th July will be chock-a-block with cycling-themed events of all shapes and sizes. We’re especially looking forward to Pop in for ious some delic e a homem d s e k a c
The Grand Departy Concert on the 4th at Huntington Stadium, and not just because of the clever name. Performing will be Union J, Russell Watson, Rough Copy and a host of local talent. But if you’re looking for something a little more ‘classically York’, then there is nothing more traditional than the centuries-old York Mystery Plays. On the 13th and 20th of the month you can follow the procession of wagons around the city, as they stop at various locations and perform the ancient works. If you see the plays from the start you get to meet God!
Does any other city offer that? No. So whatever you’re up to this month, may we heartily welcome you to our city and hope you have a corker of a time. By the way, despite what we said, if you live in China, please don’t try to go home on a bike. It will take ages.

How To Train Your Dragon 2
Film
guide How to Train Your Dragon 2. It's been five years since Hiccup and Toothless successfully united dragons and Vikings on the island of Berk. When one of their adventures leads to the discovery of a secret ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the centre of a battle to protect the peace. We really loved the first How to Train Your Dragon, so hopefully kids of all ages will relish this sequel.
Transformers: Age of Extinction.
Robots! Explosions! Special effects! Inconsequential collateral damage! Yes, it's another Transformers film, and yes... we can't believe it either. This time round a car mechanic and his daughter make a discovery that brings down the Autobots (goodies) and Decepticons (baddies), and also a paranoid government official, onto them. We can't wait. Oh... actually we can.
24
Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. In his directorial debut,
Mike Myers (Austin Powers, Shrek) documents the astounding career of Hollywood insider Shep Gordon, who fell into music management by chance after moving to LA straight out of college and befriending Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. This documentary should be of special interest to all music fans.
Guardians of the Galaxy. In
the far reaches of space, an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan. If you asked Howard if he was excited about this film, he would nod manically and start to dribble. The latest comic book-tomovie effort from Marvel, this action/sci-fi/ comedy blockbuster features quite a few famous faces (and voices) including John C. Reilly, Chris Pratt, Benicio Del Toro and Glen Close.

There be dragons! This month the river will once again be home to monstrous beasts (and that’s just the rowers!) as The York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge returns. On 13th July our fair waterways will be taken over by 36 teams battling it out between Scarborough Railway Bridge and Lendal Bridge. The drums will beat, the paddles will splash, and the crowds will gather to on cheer on their favourites. A great day out for all, the teams are formed from local businesses, clubs and groups, and are aiming to lay their rather soggy hands on the Challenge Trophy and other prestigious awards. There will be a cup for the fastest charity team, the fastest armed services team, and of course the ever popular best dressed team trophy. Last year York City Rowing Club in their boat ‘Ouse the Daddy?’ waded away with the top prize… but who will be victor this year? 28
The York Dragon Boat Challenge has been held every year since 2003 and has seen hundreds of locals take up a paddle for charity. During that time the event has helped to raise well over £720,000 for many worthwhile charities and organisations. This year the nominated charity is The Jack Raine Foundation who do great work in the fight against child abuse. The races start from 10am, with the Grand Finale taking place at 3.30pm. Le Grand
Départ In
recent years we've been able to show the world just why Britain is so Great with our fantastic sporting events – the Olympics, of course, and our own Andy Murray winning at Wimbledon. But for Yorkshire folk, perhaps the most exciting sporting event of our lifetimes is about to arrive on our doorstep. Le Tour de France is the biggest single day sporting event in the world, with over three billion people set to watch Le Grand Départ as it races through Yorkshire and an estimated 180,000 extra visitors making their way to our city. As if that wasn't exciting enough, Yorkshire will also be the first host to put on a 100 day festival in the lead up to the big weekend. This guide will show you how you can get involved in this historic event, and how the legacy of Le Grand Départ will impact York residents and businesses for years to come.
Hub of the community In true Grand Départ-y spirit, there will be four official Spectator Hubs across the city where residents and visitors can soak up the atmosphere of this historic event and see the action on a big screen. Located at York Racecourse, Monk Stray, York Designer Outlet and Rowntree Park, the Hubs will all feature a
wealth of fun family-friendly activities, thrilling entertainment and delicious catering options from early in the morning until early evening. The Monk Stray Hub will feature a cycle stunt show and a stage for live entertainment from popular acts such as the Military Wives Choir. Visitors can also have a go at decorating bikes, and cycle retailers will be on hand to offer servicing and repairs. Meanwhile, York Designer Outlet will be home to vintage stalls and a fairground, and entertainment at Rowntree Park will include music, the screening of a family film in the afternoon and a range of community and charity stalls. The Spectator Hubs are free, and apart from York Racecourse no tickets are required (all tickets for the York Racecourse Hub have been snapped up). Cycle parking is available at all sites.

Lefevre suggested the concept of the Tour as a way of boosting sales. Long distance cycle races had apparently been used before to sell more newspapers, but this was the first time that anyone had suggested a race of this length. The first Tour was held between 1st-19th July 1903, and L'Auto's circulation skyrocketed from 25,000 to 65,000. Le Velo went out of business in 1904.

It's over 100 years since the first Tour de France took place, but the story of how it came to be is just as intriguing today as it was then. In 1903, France was divided over the Dreyfus Affair. Alfred Dreyfus was a soldier who had been convicted, then exonerated, of selling military secrets to the Germans. Things were very heated, with strong opinions expressed by both sides of the argument. One person involved in a demonstration at the Parisian Auteuil horse race course in 1899, was Comte Jules-Albert de Dion, who owned De DionBouton car works – and who thought Dreyfus was guilty. De Dion was arrested after striking the President of France on the head with a walking stick, and was also fined 100 francs. This story was snapped up by the editor of Le Velo, Pierre Giffard, who was on the opposite side to de Dion, and believed that Dreyfus was innocent. His report of the arrest upset de Dion – so much so, that de Dion launched a rival sports paper called L'Auto. However, the publication wasn't quite the success that its owners had hoped for. It was during a crisis meeting that chief cycling journalist Geo 34
Did you know... l Cyclists burn about 6,000 calories per day during the Tour. That’s the equivalent of 76 hard boiled eggs, 300 Brussels sprouts or 42 bananas. l The average speed of cyclists in the Tour is around 25mph. l Annually, there are 4,700 hours of television coverage dedicated to the Tour. l Though the annual Tour celebrated its 100th running last year, this year will be 111 years since it began. The Tour was stopped during the World Wars, and was almost shut down after only the second year due to corruption and cheating from the cyclists taking part. l The reason that the ‘King of the Mountain’ jersey features red polka dots, is that the original sponsor, Chocolat Poulain, sold a product with the same spots on its packaging. l And why is the lead jersey yellow? Inspiration was drawn from the yellow pages of L’Auto, the magazine that started up the Tour.

All the world’s a stage...
The Tour de France can be a bit baffling if you’ve never seen it before. With the Grand Départ making many of us excited about the Tour for the first time, here’s a quick guide to the different stages of the race. Put simply, the winner of the Tour is the rider who can complete the course in the shortest time. However, each stage offers up its own challenges. There are usually 21 stages, which fall into the following categories: Prologue Technically not a full stage, the prologue consists of a short individual time trial, of 10km or less. It will determine who will be the race leader the following day. Flat You may be forgiven for getting confused about the ‘flat’ stages, as the roads that the cyclists ride on can feature rather
steep inclines. This stage is usually around 200km in length, and you’ll see the riders remaining part of the peloton for most of it. Individual time trial Around 50km in length, each rider is tested against the clock during this stage. Riders each begin the stage at two minute intervals, beginning with the last placed rider. Team time trial As above, but with riders racing as a team. The clock stops when team member number five from each team crosses the finish line. Mountain The climbs in the mountains can be nothing short of terrifying, with riders required to climb 2000m from sea level. Each climb is rated according to difficulty, ranging from four to one, or ‘hors’ – this is the most challenging. Holding on tight to the handlebars during the descent is an absolute must!
Jersey lore A breakdown of what the colours of those jerseys actually mean. Yellow: You probably know this one already. The rider with the lowest cumulative time for the distance completed so far wears this jersey. Whoever holds it at the end is crowned winner. Green: The wearer of this jersey is the best sprinter and time trialist.
Polka dot: Known as the ‘King of the Mountains’, this jersey is worn by the best climber. White: The best young rider (no older than 25 during the year of the race).

Joining a local cycling club is a great motivator. As well as being able to try new routes that you might not have thought of, you’ll make new friends along the way, and be able to get all of the advice and tips you need! Here are some great York-based groups who welcome new members.
>> Breeze Network York
The free rides with this group, which is part of the national Breeze programme, have been set up to encourage more women to get in the saddle. The rides are on local, accessible routes and are in small and friendly groups, which make them particularly good for beginners. Plus, the rides usually begin at a bike shop, so there will be help at hand should you need to pump your tyres or a safety check. l Register at www.breezebikerides.com or call 0161 274 2117. Selected rides are also put up in the Guided Rides at www.itravelyork.info
>> York Bike Belles
Another group on a mission to get more women cycling, York Bike Belles work in partnership with City of York Council and Sustrans, and offer bike loan schemes, rides focusing on safety, and maintenance workshops complete with cheese and wine. There is also a weekly social for members. l Join the women on Facebook (www.facebook.com/yorkbikebelles) and Twitter (@YorkBikeBelles) or visit www.itravelyork.info 38
>> York Rouleurs
If committing to a particular set cycling routine has put you off from joining a club before, perhaps York Rouleurs is for you. The focus of this new club is on flexibility – riders are able to just turn up if and when they can, with absolutely no pressure placed on them. Rides are confirmed on Twitter in advance (@yorkrouleurs) and usually take place on Sundays at 9am, lasting approximately 30 miles. Afterwards, members then meet for coffee and cake.
>> University of York Cycling Club
Not only open to students, the University of York Cycling Club welcomes members of the public, and people of all abilities and disciplines are able to join. The club has three separate sections dedicated to road cycling, mountain biking and leisure riding, with other pursuits such as time trials, cross country and hill climbing also practised. Membership includes access to facilities such as a 1km cycling circuit, and bikes on loan. l Visit www.uycc.co.uk

>> Guided cycle rides
City of York Council also offer free guided rides around the city. There's no need to book, simply turn up on the day and enjoy the ride! The rides cover a range of themes, including exploring the history of the city and riding for health. There are also inclusive cycle rides available for novices, older people and people living with a disability or long term medical condition. The rides are shorter and at a slower pace than the other rides available, and a limited number of specially-adapted bikes are available to book on request. l To find out more about these rides, visit www.york.gov.uk and search for 'Inclusive Cycle Rides Programme' or 'Guided Bike Rides Programmes' for a downloadable schedule.

The official Yorkshire Festival song, The Big Wide, is an empowering, uplifting and catchy track – and you can download it for free at http://festival. yorkshire.com/join-in-and-downloads, then make it your own! The composers, Hope and Social, will be adding arrangements for choirs and brass bands to the festival website, and they’d love to see the song performed across the county in as many different musical styles as possible.

We take a closer look at some of the people involved with the York leg of the Tour.
CYCling champions Earlier this year, we asked for a couple of volunteers to be our CYCling champions to share their passion for and help promote cycling in the council. Tim and Dawn were awarded this special honour! They share their personal cycling stories with us. qualified Technical Ride Leader with CTC and help out with delivering mountain bike activities to young people.
community leisure officer for children & young people What sort of cycling do you like to do? I live in a rural area with no shortage of tracks, trails and country roads to explore. I live ten minutes from Dalby Forest and have been riding there since before it was a trail centre. When did you get your first bike? I got my first mountain bike when I was 15. It was a horrible thing compared to what is available today but I lived on it for years! How has your cycling progressed over the years? I’m now a

How often do you ride? I try to get out for a day’s riding at least once a month with my friend and one time CYC Play Team colleague Simon Haddock. We usually ride in the Dales or North Yorks Moors but have been out to the Lakes and Peak District last year. How do you get other people involved in cycling? Last year I started looking at the possibility of setting up an informal CYC mountain bike group. I applied for some money from the staff lottery to set up some coaching sessions at Dalby Forest for people who want to improve their riding, or just to have a go.
tenancy enforcement officer How long have you cycled for? I started cycling to work when I joined CYC about four years ago. I bought a bike from the Bike Rescue and used it to cycle to work. The more I cycled, the more I enjoyed it and then I bought a bike through the Cycle to Work Scheme. Since then I have increased the amount I cycle going out for long rides at weekends. Do you go for rides with friends, family or by yourself? All of the above. Through my cycling to work, my partner now cycles to
work and when friends come to visit we often go out for a ride. I know quite a few good cycle routes around York of differing lengths that feature ideal locations for little lunch stops or refreshment breaks. What does the Tour de France coming to York mean to you? I am getting married at the end of May and the Tour de France in York has inspired my partner and I to take up a cycling challenge. We will be watching some of the cycling in Yorkshire and then we are cycling from London to Paris at the end of July, which means we will be in Paris for the end of the Tour. We are raising money for the British Heart Foundation and asking people to sponsor us as a wedding gift. I am pretty sure that if I hadn’t come to work for CYC we wouldn’t be considering such a challenge!

Tour de Force Two women in particular have been incredibly instrumental in championing Yorkshire as a cycling destination. Councillor Sonja Crisp, City of York Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, has worked closely with other local authorities in Yorkshire to ensure the York stage of the Grand Depart is the best it can possibly be. As a vocal champion of our city, Cllr Crisp is thrilled at the residents' support. “The enthusiasm and excitement already in the city about this huge event is becoming more visible every day,” says Sonja. “The council is working alongside residents, businesses, communities and partners in York so that they feel informed and able to experience the race, and, importantly, make the most out of the opportunities it will bring.” Sonja adds that the city is likely to benefit hugely. “York has already benefited from incredible positive global media attention since the race was announced and we intend to build on this in the run up to, during and after the race alongside partners, to increase York's profile as a place in which

people want to live, work, visit and invest." Kersten England, Chief Executive of City of York Council, has been instrumental in setting up Cycle Yorkshire, an initiative that focuses on using the momentum of the Tour visit to create a regionwide legacy for all generations and abilities. “With the start of Stage 2 of the 2014 Le Grand Depart rolling out from York on 6 July, there has never been a better time to start cycling in and around York,” says Kersten. “It’s also great to see a project like York Bike Belles starting, which will help to remind people that cycling is an inclusive activity that everyone can get involved with.” Kersten adds that she is pleased
with the effort that has already been made to include the younger generation in cycling. “The first Tour de France education pack is a great free resource that we’ve developed with Sustrans to get children across Yorkshire – and beyond – involved with the Tour de France as an event, but also cycling – for sport, or just for fun.
