n SEPTEMBER 2012
WELCOME TO YORK!
Summer may not have been as kind as we’d have liked, but who cares – the festival season is in full swing and we can’t wait to get involved with the fantastic events that York has to offer this month! Have a look through our guide to ensure that you uncover the best bits of York during your stay.
Who doesn’t love food? The Festival of Food and Drink is sure to dish up some delicious treats, and there’ll be lots of fascinating events – we’re particularly excited about the ‘eat-along’ talk where local expert Andrew ‘Bones’ Jones will explain what sort of things people used to eat in days gone by – with food provided. See you there – we’ll be the ones first at the nibbles! Are you a bike nut (see what we did there)? Even if you aren’t, you’ll be able to enjoy the Festival of Cycling –
there’ll be have-a-go sessions for all abilities, as well as guided tours – what better way to see York?
If you’re more of the bookworm type, you’ll be dazzled by the York National Book Fair, which will see the biggest event yet in the fair’s 38 year history. There’ll be a huge range of rare and hard-to-find books on every topic you can think of. Are you a green-fingered guru? Head to Beningbrough Hall’s plant fair and take a special souvenir home with you from the estate. No matter what your interest, there’ll probably be a festival for you to enjoy – and if not a festival, then an equally exciting event, exhibition, show or tour – to make your stay in the city fantastic. Head to our events section to find out more!

e r t a e h T THEATRE ROYAL MIRIAM MARGOLYES IN DICKENS' WOMEN (4 SEPTEMBER) As part of this year’s celebrations for the bicentenary of Charles Dickens, Miriam Margolyes reprises her acclaimed Olivier Award-nominated production. Audiences have the unique opportunity to witness the extraordinary passion and talent of Miriam Margolyes as she portrays over 23 of Dickens’ best-loved characters, from doe-eyed young heroines to brow-beating old harridans. To book: 623568 THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER (14-29 SEPTEMBER) Pilot Theatre bring this searing text of class and the criminal justice system to the stage. This stunning new production, set in Britain's Olympic Year 2012, exposes the beating heart of a nation, still broken and still divided across class lines. We follow one runner, alone with his thoughts, becoming part of his journey as his steady running rhythm transports him over a harsh, frost bitten earth. To book: 623568 RAPUNZEL (27 SEPTEMBER – 13 OCTOBER) Tutti Frutti celebrates its 21st birthday with York Theatre Royal by commissioning a fabulous new playful production of Rapunzel; a story about a girl who is taken away from what she knows and 26
protected from all the things that she loves. Told in an inventive, visual and physical style with live music and magical design, Rapunzel is a delightful new production for children about the curiosity and joys of growing up, risk taking and discovering who you are. To book: 623568 BOUNCERS (5-8 SEPTEMBER) Lads are on the pull, girls are on the razzle and the beer and alco-pops are flowing free. There’s slow dancing, snogging, chips and late-night kebabs – and the bouncers see it all. Set in Hollywood in the waning days of the silent screen era, it focuses on romantic lead Don Lockwood, his sidekick Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, and Lockwood's leading lady Lina Lamont, whose less-than-dulcet vocal tones make her an unlikely candidate for stardom in talking pictures.
