Et tu, York So here we are, back in the midst of summer, in dear old July. as we all know (just nod, nobody will judge you) July was named for Julius caesar, a man so sure of himself that he bested all his foes on the battlefield and was proclaimed roman Emperor for life. July is a bit like that; storming in with hot weather, surprise attack rain showers, and long sunny days that seem to last an age. But, just like Julius who was viciously stabbed to death by his so-called chums, it won’t last forever. Best make the most of it now, eh? To ensure you feel like an Emperor all month long be sure to keep this issue of what’s on in your back pocket or bag. armed with us (just as Julius caesar was armed with his legions) you’ll conquer the greatest enemy to ever beset a family during the summer months... boredom. Flick through these pages, find events, concerts, festivals and shows that arouse your excitement, and you will have come, you will have seen, and you will have ruddy-well conquered! highlights to have piqued our centurion’s interest include the York Stamp & coin Fair, The dungeon’s new Jack the ripper show (more knives - be warned), the reopening of York maze, and all the mad summer fun to be had piglets adventure Farm park. The die is cast... you’re going to have a great month!

A ripping yarn

meet the man himself at Jack The ripper on Tour is it possible Jack the ripper left london and came to York to escape capture and stop his true identity being revealed? if you get to the York dungeon, 25th July-5th September, you will meet some of the locals in this new show, who all have their own story to tell about a man they think they might be Jack. who was he? where did he go? will he strike again? let’s just hope that he doesn’t strike during your terrifying and laughter-packed visit, as a crazed Victorian murderer is the last thing you need during the school holidays... n Visit www.thedungeons.com/york/en 6

WEST SIDE STORY (30th July-1st August)

IN FOG AND FALLING SNOW (26th June-11th July)

Winner of ten Academy Awards and two Tony Awards, Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story is one of the alltime great American musicals, with explosive dancing and some of the most electrifying music ever written for the stage, including Maria,Tonight and Somewhere. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is transported to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs; the American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heartwrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time.

EAST IS EAST (3rd-8th August)

Following its sensational West End run as part of the Trafalgar Transformed season, one of the best British comedies will delight you this summer. Pakistani chip shop owner George Khan - ‘Genghis’ to his kids - is determined to give his children a strict Muslim upbringing in 1970s Salford. Household tension reaches breaking point as their long-suffering English mother, Ella, gets caught in the cross fire with her loyalties divided between her marriage and the free will of her children. Award-winning actress Pauline McLynn (Father Ted, Shameless and EastEnders) stars as Ella

Mid 1840s York: The British nation sets a course to dominate the world, driven by the sweat of the people and the power of steam. Told by a cast of over 200, audiences will move through the National Railway Museum’s collections and end up in a new purpose built theatre. Experience an amazing story brought vividly to life by the people of York.

THE RAILWAY CHILDREN (31st July – 5th September)

THE MAVERICKS (14th September)

From their earliest shows as a garage band playing the punk clubs on Miami Beach, The Mavericks have had a skill for getting people to groove. Drawing on a mix of classic country, cow-punk and standards, Malo and company left South Florida, bringing their rhythmic fervour and Latin machismo, along with Malo’s lush baritone, to the world.

The gripping theatrical exploration of terror that’s been thrilling audiences of all ages for more than 25 years, returns home to the Stephen Joseph Theatre where it all began. Since that debut it has enthralled over seven million people worldwide with its unique blend of suspense, drama and bold stagecraft.

Confusions (9th July-26th September)

From a devoted and isolated mother, to her unfaithful travelling salesman husband, through a solicitous waiter to well-heeled diners and an utterly shambolic garden fete, human frailty is laid bare as one hilarious situation after another unfolds.
