summer’s here! welcome to York in the first proper month of summer. we do summer very well here in York and always manage to schedule our biggest outdoor events on sunny days. Think about it; did you see a drop of rain last year during our city’s leg of the Tour de France? No, because we knew it wouldn’t rain that day and planned accordingly. other towns and cities often wonder how we’ve become so good at knowing when it will and will not rain, but the real secret is that we’ve just had more summers than most other places. Back when our neighbouring rival cities were nothing but dirty villages (not mentioning any names... cough... Leeds...cough) we were already an important city, filled with clever people staring at the clouds and saying (in Latin), “Yes, good day for the races, i think.” which is why you’re guaranteed a great (and dry) time out in York this month, and there is plenty to do outside. how about a bit of nature at askham Bryan college’s countryside day, or even the many openair events planned as part of the Festival of ideas? Trust us, those will be two very rain-free gatherings. whatever you’re looking to get up to in dear old York this month, keep us handy, as contained in these few silky smooth pages is everything going on in and around the city that you could ever want to know about. if you hear of an event taking place that isn’t inside the what’s on, it’s probably because it doesn’t exist, and you’re being taken for a fool by a mischievous imp or fairy. it happens, trust us.
