as we've always considered ourselves to be quite roman here at what's on, with regular toga parties held in the office and because once we had a wall built by a builder called adrian (close enough), we're treating this month like the actual start of 2016 and giving it our full attention. clearly the rest of York has done the same.

madness has crept in. if you thought a visit to York would be nothing but history lessons and guided walks around “haunted” locations (note the inverted commas? ghost walk burn!!!), you would be wrong, our dear friends. it's march, at last! did you know (and please don't check this as we get most of our 'facts' from scribbles on toilet doors) that the roman yearly calendar didn't start until march. To them, January and February was just a time to lounge around indoors, tutting at the cold weather – well, rome's version of cold weather – and sending their slaves out for boiled dormice to eat. Sounds wonderful.
