although we often joke about how York is where all holidays and traditions started (you know, like when we revealed that the Easter bunny was actually Judi dench’s dad), in November we can do so without our tongues in our cheeks. That is because guy Fawkes, he of gunpowder plot infamy, was a local lad. raised on the mean streets of 16th century York, guido (as he was actually called) was born here, went to school here, and presumably got pretty miffed off with the king here.

if you’ve come to our fair city to celebrate 5th November in style, to attend one of the many local bonfires and firework displays, mind how you go. Like like guy’s attempts to blow up the houses of parliament, we like to do things big; big fires, big parties, and even bigger bangs. if you were planning on getting any sleep before 11pm, 3rd-6th November, you might have to try one of the other cities in the area. or France. it’s lovely this time of... ha, sorry couldn’t finish that sentence without shaking from laughter.

but once the bonfire ashes have been cleared, and the last catherine wheel has spun, what will you do? certainly don’t go home, as there is almost an entire month of fun to be had here in York. The aesthetica Short Film Festival will provide some interesting viewing, while the Living North christmas Fayre will inspire your own festive preparations. Speaking of which, we’ll be well and truly gearing up for christmas this month, and the city will absolutely sparkle with decorations, early morning frost, and the rubbed-off body glitter of visiting geordie hen parties. whatever you’re up to, keep us handy, and have great month!

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC (7th November) The world’s favourite ABBA and Bee Gees concert show is coming to town with an all-new, sequinspangled production. The international smash-hit show’s all-star cast has entertained the world with lycra-tight harmonies and superb musicianship for longer than ABBA did during the 70s and 80s!

The Importance of Being Earnest (17th-21st November) Oscar Wilde’s much loved and brilliantly witty masterpiece is known to elegantly lampoon the hypocrisies of a Victorian society. Rosalind Ayres, Nigel Havers, Martin Jarvis, Christine Kavanagh and Siân Phillips star.

Find out what happens when Jack takes their old cow to market and ends up selling her for five beans. Starring panto legend and former Emmerdale star Stuart Wade 32

as Dame Tilly Trot, X-Factor’s Jade Ellis as Fairy Peapod, and Scooch’s Russ Spencer and Caroline Barnes as Jack and Jill.

Crazy Creatures

Poles Apart (16th-21st November) The Theatre Royal is an oasis of artistic calm, equality and sensitivity, but when the scaffolders from hell descend upon the thespians, the masks slip and the curtain comes down. Phil, Fat Glen and Polish Jan, are on task and finish as they deliver a breathless rant on life, art and sausage sarnies in a desperate effort to mend the leaking roof.

(13th December) Calling all young people, family, and friends – get to the centre for a family friendly concert. The performance brings to life two children’s stories ‘The Duck With No Luck’ and ‘A Cat Called Scratch’

Hansel and Gretel (10th-27th December) It is dinner time and as usual the children push around the food on their plate, complain, and act rudely. So tonight instead of dinner, Mother tells the story of Hansel and Gretel. As the story evolves of two hungry children abandoned in the forest by their parents, and their capture by a wicked witch, the family embraces their roles and find a Happily Ever After ending.
