Still, fret not, as there is loads to do to take your mind off that weirdness. Yes, join a ghost walk if you wish (there’s loads to choose from), then pop along to the likes of York’s Chocolate Story, The York Dungeon, and the Jorvik Viking Centre for thrills and scares. But don’t forget that we’ve been dealing with things that go bump in the night for nigh on 2000 years now, and so to brighten our moods we created the world famous Illuminating York – taking place up until Halloween – as a celebration of light and local artistic talent.

And of course, no trip to York in October, the month of • GIG GUIDE Halloween, would be complete without some ghostly Page 34 4 goings on. You might have heard that we are the most York Railway haunted city in Europe (which we assume to be the • THEATRE Station Pages 36 - 37 most haunted continent on the planet, surely), but did you know that Halloween was actually invented here. • FOOD & DRINK 5 It’s true, in 1975 in fact, as a way to get kids interested Page 42 - 47 in creepy goings-on, and therefore lend a hand to our tourist industry. If you’re over 40 and can remember celebrating Halloween prior to 1975, it is probably 6 because a ghost implanted that memory in your head. DD AA Shocking, we know. CC BB RO AD

Ah, October... by far the best time to wander around our fair, ancient, and beautiful city. You might be here to sample the delights of our major attractions (largest Gothic cathedral north of the Alps, and largest railway 0 museum in the world, anyone?) but don’t overlook just 0 how pretty York gets in the autumn. A stroll along the 2 river, or through any of our many parks, will present a feast for the eyes and nose. And the best thing about falling leaves, ripening conkers, and busily scurrying 3 squirrels, is that its all free.
