FEaTuRE: SHOPPING GUIDE Page 32

The band greenday once sang “wake me up when September ends”,which is a shame, as they would’ve missed all the awesome things happening this month. and if you’re wondering why a successful american rock band would care about what’s going on here, it’s because greenday are humans, and York is the centre of human civilisation. Look at a map of the Britain and you’ll find good ol’ Eboracum in the middle. Zoom out a bit and you’ll see that Britain is in the middle of the map, with the rest of the world pivoting around us. Therefore what happens in York is of great concern to people across the planet... and you get to find out first thanks to this copy of what’s on. Be warned though: loudly declaring in the middle of the street “i’ve got the latest copy of what’s on!” could prove hazardous. we’re not saying that you will instantly be set upon by confused tourists, bored families, and business people here for a conference with a few hours to kill, all clawing at these pages find out what they can do... but that might happen. it happened once to us, when an overlyenthusiastic tall Norwegian lady dressed as a Viking jumped on us to find out what time Jorvik opened. we’d be lying if we said the experience was wholly unpleasant. also be careful how you handle this issue. it is so jampacked with incredible events, concerts, gigs, theatre shows, attractions and fairs, that if you drop it, or turn the pages too quickly, if might just explode. we’ve been as careful as we can, and even used thinner ink this month, to make sure it all fits in. Still, as soon as you see how fun your September in York could be, you might lose the plot and try to eat the magazine, hoping that your stomach will some how assimilate the information herein quicker than your eyes could. Steady on, and have a great September.

Joseph Rowntree Theatre Visit www.jrtheatre.co.uk THE SORCERER (17th-19th September) Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company present the classic play. Love levels all ranks, or so we are told, but in a 1915 village sometimes a little assistance is required. Enter a sorcerer with a love potion and soon that world is turned on its head.

CATS (30th October) York Light Youth present the acclaimed Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Cats tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as “the Jellicle choice” and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.

LA TRAVIATA (7th October) The Russian State Ballet is world-renowned for producing the very best and most striking operas and ballets – it’s just a shame that Moscow is a little bit more than a taxi ride away. Fortunately the company are currently enjoying a UK-wide tour, and they – and a very special guest performer – are coming to York on 7th October. Joining the company for a performance of Verdi’s La Traviata at the York Barbican will be Bolshoi Opera soloist Irina Bozenko, ensuring that this haunting tragedy will transport you to another world. A masterpiece in its own right, it contains some of Verdi’s most beautiful and memorable music.

To book, call 0844 8542757. Jethro Tull The Rock Opera (12th September) Ian Anderson celebrates the life and times of the English Agricultural inventor, Jethro Tull. The show tell the story of the original Jethro Tull’s life, reimagined as if in the near future and illustrated with Anderson’s best-known songs from the rock band Jethro Tull’s repertoire. THE MAVERICKS (14th September) From their earliest shows as a garage band playing the punk clubs on Miami Beach, The Mavericks have had a skill for getting people to groove. Drawing on a mix of classic country, cow-punk and standards, Malo and company left South Florida, bringing their rhythmic fervour and Latin machismo, along with Malo’s lush baritone, to the world.

(Until 26th September) From a devoted and isolated mother, to her unfaithful travelling salesman husband, through a solicitous waiter to well-heeled diners and an utterly shambolic garden fete, human frailty is laid bare as one hilarious situation after another unfolds.

HERO’S WELCOME (3rd October-2nd September) The Stephen Joseph Theatre Company present Alan Ayckborn’s tale of homecoming. Seventeen years ago, Murray fled the neighbourhood under somewhat of a cloud and certain local folk have long memories, not least Alice, the mayor, whom he left standing at the altar. Indeed few of his friends, once the welcome flags have stopped waving and the town band has ceased playing, seem particularly happy to see him back.
