Big hugs!

How are you? Are you fine? We’re great, thanks for asking! Brilliant in fact. Stupendous, even! No, it’s okay, we haven’t just collectively necked 300 espressos, nor have we been popping diet pills that we bought online from Malaysia... we’re just so full of springtime beans. April might be synonymous with downpours of rain, and although we’ve all been carrying our brolly since Christmas, nothing can dampen our spirits and excitement for the coming seasons. Because... it’s about to get slightly warmer! Woohoo! Surely April is the month when you find yourself shifting to the thinner coat, or – glory be to such days – not even leaving the house with one on at all! Can you even remember what that was like? Us neither. It seems like the rest of the city has also realised that the sunnier time of year is approaching and has started

40

to unfurl from winter slumber. Piglets Adventure Farm Park is reopening with new attractions in time for Easter, while our go-to organic farm shop, The Balloon Tree, has enlarged their play facilities for kids. And, you know, hopefully also for grown-ups who don’t know any better. April will also welcome the York Health & Healing Festival, which is great way to get yourself prepped for the summer. Feeling down? Go to the festival, get revitalised, read every single issue of Your Local Link that drops through your letter box, and you’ll have a smile on your face until September. When the summer will die. Erm, we mean... when the summer will carry on until March of next year, because that’s something that can and will happen. La la la, happy happy happy! Go April!!! SARAH

What we’ve learnt this issue … The Mystery Machine

THERE IS ART EVERYWHERE Sure, you can look at the world and say to yourself, “Wow, it’s all so beautiful, man. Look at that butterfly!” While we would agree with you that butterflies are pretty cool, man, we were actually talking about the abundance of striking art that will adorn the city this month. York Open Studios turns our dear old home town into a walk-through gallery where peoples’ homes become the studios, as local artists reveal all. Every kind of art will be on display, and every part of the city will be involved. As well as getting a map and taking a wander about, why not get involved yourself? Draw a picture, tape it to your living room window, then stand it in your front garden pointing at it.  Visit www.yorkopenstudios.co.uk

In 2012 we enjoyed a fantastic production of the York Mystery Plays, staged within the ruins of St Mary's Abbey. Thing is, as good as it was, a ruined cathedral just isn't as impressive as, say, a still-standing cathedral which is also, say, the largest Gothic structure north of the Alps. Fortunately York possesses such a building, and fortunately again it will be hosting this summer's megaproduction of said Mystery Plays. From 26th May until 30th June York Minster will be the setting of the theatrical extravaganza which tells the story of The Bible, including the 'It' couple of their time, Adam and Eve, and a lowly carpenter/Roman-annoyer named Jesus.  Tickets? Call 623568.

For our Treasure Hunt feature this month, we take a trip along the river for the first part in a series of long walks by York’s waterways. As we reported in the March issue, we were unable to research the walk back then as the river was still too high. However, we’re happy to report that we ventured out recently down New Walk AND DIDN’T DIE! Feels good to have bits of the city back after the floods, and there were even hordes of council workers with pressure washers hosing off the mud and silt. But if you’re still mad about the flooding, we say lets fight back. Grab a bucket and drop it into the river. Then take it home and pour it down your drain. If we all did that the river would shrink, and so therefore we’d be flooding it with dryness. Take that, you huge, wet, never-ending swine!

and life in general

AS SeeN By rACHel rAGG

WHAT IS THE POINT OF MEN? I find myself asking this question at least every, ooh, three seconds. Anyone who has ever been married (or, indeed, has ever met a male) will understand why. They take up space. They have loud voices. They are fussy about children’s wet feet, and don’t notice their own large footprints on the carpet. They ask you if you saw “that article in the newspaper”, as if you had time to sit around reading the newspaper - when in fact the only time you ever get to see one is when you are lining the guinea pigs’ cage with it. They take root on the computer, un-glueing themselves only to watch news programmes, on which they deliver their own inimitable commentary.

They hog the TV remote, fall asleep, then claim “I was watching that” when you try to change channel.

screens (rather like big males, really). They kick every passing lamp-post (what is that all about?)

commune and knit lentils while overthinking the meaning of a four-word text message.

They forget entire conversations (“yes, I have told you at least two thousand times that I am going out tonight so you are looking after the children”), not to mention birthdays and Christmas presents.

In short: we females should all just go off and live in a nice man-free

ACTUAlly Not surprisingly, I’m not the only

They can’t even be trusted with a shopping list, as some kind of weird hunter-gather instinct kicks in, and they buy at least four of everything on it, all with the same use-by date. Small males aren’t much better. They shout. They get you to time them on a stopwatch while they try to beat their own record for running around in pointless circles. They forget to get dressed and glue themselves to

I fear, though, that they were wasting their research budget. It does not take scientific reasearch to work out why men are worth keeping after all. This morning I forgot to set the alarm for Child 2’s orchestra rehearsal. And so we had to go to school in the car. Only the windscreen was frozen. I do not need a man to scrape ice off a windscreen, I thought. Not when I have a perfectly good CD case to use. But then the car simply refused to move from its comfy white bed. Definitely a job for an AA man. While I’m at it, the decorators who transformed my house and made it sellable was a man. Only a man would be insane enough to balance ladders on stairs to paint an attic ceiling 500 feet up. And the man who set fire to the neighbours’ garden fence while very

efficiently burning up my garden rubbish was a man. The North Yorkshire firemen who came to put said fire out were also, um, men. The postman who recently slithered through ice to bring my Boden summer dresses is a man. The one who will return them to Boden when I look in the mirror and see a short, middle-aged frump staring back at me, rather than a lissome six-foot Boden model, will undoubtedly be a man. And, of course, the man who rescued me when my car broke down outside the Royal York hotel last month was a man. As was the man who didn’t fine me for illegally parking outside Plaskitt and Plaskitt on Micklegate and let me off with a smile and a wave (it was just before Valentine’s Day, so he must have been feeling kind). As was the man who removed the monster spider from the bathroom and let it abseil to safety outside.

one who has wondered about this. Researchers from the University of East Anglia went to the bother of studying beetles to try to work out the point of men. Their conclusion was that the male tendency to compete to find a mate leads to a healthier population and a better gene pool. Ergo men are useful after all.

ARIES

21st march - 19th april

L to R: Rusell Crowe, Emma Watson, Robert Downey Jr., Vivienne Westwood

A restless mood pervades the House of Aries throughout pretty much all of the month. You’re likely to feel hemmed in and claustrophobic, especially around the 5th, 6th and 7th when something gets delayed or postponed. Other peoples’ inability to make decisions is also something that rubs you up the wrong way, and this is a scenario which is relevant both in the home and in your place of work. Some travel aspects around the 16th-17th may give your spirits a bit of a lift, but only if you’ve got

the goodwill and co-operation of partners and close friends. Romantic aspects can get a bit tense at various times, but it will be to your advantage to avoid full scale arguments and contentious conversations. This is easier for me to suggest than it might be for you to do – but do your best. Overall, finances are sound but you’ll be frustrated by the way in which a lover or spouse seems to overspend without applying any kind of restraint.

22ND JUN - 22ND JUL

There is a gypsy in the Taurus soul that feels the need to move on and make waves with the coming of the spring. Travel opportunities will be actively pursued as you go in search of a change of scene and scenery. You’re likely to be impulsive with money, but if this prevents you from walking into Tesco and shouting “go to Asda” maybe it saves your bacon.

Quite a bright and positive month in which you’re likely to be quite impulsive. If other people criticise, you’ll just ignore them – which is the right thing to do. There is a lot of social activity, especially in the second half of the month, and you’ll enjoy climbing into your glad rags when you commit yourself to a bit of social climbing and networking.

A 'bitty' month, filled with repercussions from choices and decisions made earlier this year. There will be the implementation of some new domestic routines, and a fair bit of involvement with bureaucracy and red tape, probably around the 17th, 18th, 19th. Not a lot of co-operation from lovers and partners, who have their hands full with issues of their own.

Quite a lot of pressure to contend with over pretty much the whole of the month. This comes from work issues as well as domestic situations. Not always enough hours in the day, and you need to be mindful of health aspects and energy levels. A necessary journey around the 22nd will be to your financial advantage, so don’t put it off!

LIBRA 23rd SEP - 23RD OCT A very pragmatic attitude is required when you deal with some practical problems that not only involve you directly, but also other people close to you. A very busy month on the work scene, during which some targets will be hit, while others won’t. Don’t try to achieve everything at once. Define priorities, then proceed one step at a time.

SCORPIO 24TH OCT - 22ND NOV

A rather exciting month as you become increasingly aware of new options and opportunities. One particular member of the opposite sex will be making interesting overtures, and this could turn out to be quite a sexy and romantic few weeks, especially the period between the 10th and the 27th. Of course, you do have to say yes!

SAGITTARIUS 23RD NOV - 21ST DEC

On a superficial level this will be the usually busy month dealing with banks, building societies, work routines, domestic commitments and sexual priorities. Beneath the surface, however, there is a sense of unease, and one key question

seems to be forcing itself into your mind. Just who are you living your life for? Yourself or other people?

twood

couple of years; you may have done more than you thought you were capable of doing, but there are still itches which need to be scratched. A lack of direction seems to be a stumbling block at this time and there’ll not be much help or advice from other people. Be patient.

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 20TH JAN

A much more pleasant and predictable month than some you have known so far this year. Key emotional relationships chunter along nicely without crisis, and you’ll feel pretty well in control when it comes to career pathways and job situations. A good time for getting some fresh air and for finding a few new projects.

AQUARIUS 21st jan - 18th feb

On more than one occasion there will be a collision of conflicting ideas. Do you do something right now, or wait till a bit later? Do you tell someone what you really think, or what you think they want to hear? If someone upsets you (and they will) do you take them to task, or let things go? If you think about it carefully, you know exactly what you’ve got to do.

PISCES 19th feb - 20th mar This will not necessarily be a calm month, but it is a month wherein you’ll feel a lot more in control of what you’re doing and what’s going on around you. Social outlook is quite bright and you can look forward to a few liquid evenings with good friends. Travel aspects are sticky, so think twice before committing yourself to holidays. Plans may have to be changed.

It’ll go swimmingly… Looking for a pastime that will get you fit, see you having tonnes of fun with friends old and new, and that won’t cost the earth (and the oceans)? New Earswick Swimming Club, one of the oldest swimming clubs in York being founded in 1967, is on the lookout for new members. They provide swimming lessons for children aged from four, as well as coaching for youngsters who wish to progress to a competitive level, while the Master Section caters for mature swimmers. A New Earswick Swimming Club membership means that families benefit from eight hours of recreational swimming each week from as little as £3.50!  To find out more call 626815 or visit www.newearswicksc.co.uk

Women of York! Warm up those joints, flex that grip, and polish those shoes with the tiny little spikes on them... Heworth Golf Club Ladies Section needs you! The fun-loving team are looking to bolster their ranks this spring with lots of new players. The members-owned not-for-profit club plays at the course on Munchastergate and would love to hear from female golfing enthusiasts old and young, expert and green. Swing along to the club's Open Day on 10th April, between either 10am and 12 noon, or from 2pm until 4pm.  To discover more. Call 07486 080278.

Move, breathe and smile

If you have mobility issues or just haven’t exercised in a good long while, you may have some trepidation about getting moving again. Fortunately yoga teacher Marilyn Dean now offers the very special Very Gentle Yoga class at York Yoga Studio every Wednesday morning in Acomb. Running from 6th April until 15th June, the special class is designed to suit anyone who lacks confidence to exercise for any reason. Everyone is welcome, and the only prerequisite is you have an open mind and a sense of humour!  To find out more, visit www.gentleyogayorkshire.co.uk

HELPING VOICES TO BE HEARD OCAY, the Older Citizens Advocacy York, need your help. Right now the organisation is calling out for dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to act in a number of different roles, to help older people in our city. They need fundraisers to help with events, advocates to listen to and help older people get their voices heard, community pals to assist with getting OCAY's message out there, and trustees to work behind the scenes on strategy and planning.  If you think you could help and would like to know more, call them today on 676200.

Keeping afloat

The RNLI Lifeboats do incredible work along our coastline to save lives and keep us all safe. But now it’s time for you to help keep them afloat, as the charity is looking for items to sell to help raise funds for all that vital work. Right now they desperately need the likes of jigsaws, soft toys, knitting wool, buttons, and any unwanted gifts (come on, those weird Christmas presents are still sitting in your wardrobe, aren’t they?).  To donate something or for more information about getting involved with the charity yourself, call 491133.

You can’t help but to make all the girls fall in love. Maybe she just wanted to send you pictures of kittens? You wouldn’t have known, with all that jumping to conclusions you’ve been

doing. Anyway give her the number, andlet her say what she wants to say. If she does want a date you could maybe tell a little white lie and pretend you’re already romantically involved with someone else, or just be honest and say I’m sorry I’m not looking for a relationship right now… You’ll figure it out.

HOLIDAY ROMANCE A while ago, my husband and I went on holiday to Skegness, where we met a friendly bartender named Glenn. We became friends with Glenn and he was sad to hear we were leaving so joined us in celebratory drinks. Throughout the night, my husband and Glenn got quite “close”. Eventually and embarrassingly, my husband tried to kiss Glenn. It concluded in chaos and many harsh comments were made. Now, years later Glenn has moved into FAMILY FEUD Daphne, my family point blank refuse to wash the dishes after I’ve tirelessly laboured over dinner for them. They seem to think the sink magically washes plates. Do I just leave them to pile up? ANNOYED MUM, SOUTHBANK

the house next to us! Do we confront the issue (and him) before it gets out of hand? WORRIED WIFE, FULFORD Ah, this one sounds a bit awkward, poor Glen, and poor you. I reckon you should probably just head on over there and say hi, apologise about that funny night and explain that there’s no hard (or romantic) feelings. Alternatively drag your husband round by his ear and force him to apologise… these things do happen. (and check your husband’s phone to see if he knows any other bartenders called Glen).

However it’s not too late to change that. Explain to your family that you’re tired of doing all the work over dinner time and that from now on it is their responsibility to do the dishes. Try hiding the dirty plates left over in various rooms around the house until the stench is unbearable, or get paper plates….. just a thought…

Yes. You should definitely leave them to pile up. How else will your family learn if you just keep on doing the dishes for them day in day out. I get the feeling you may have made a rod for your own back.

CAT ALLERGY My girlfriend has an over-the-top obsession with her new cat – Jerry – and I’m fine with this. However, I feel my cat allergies may get in the way of this relationship. Every time I see this cat, I come out with a swollen face, enflamed throat and huge rashes. Do I tell her that we must get rid of Jerry for my health and our relationship? Or do I suffer endlessly? PLAYGROUND TROUBLE My excitable five year old has had a squabble with his best friend at school, which resulted in both boys being punished. I was happy to let the boys sort it out between themselves but the other boy’s mum has taken offence. She persists to spread gossip around the other mums, shining a bad light on myself and my family. Do I confront her

Kate, mums will be mums. But there is no reason for this lady to go around chatting trash about you to the other mums. Have it out with her on the playground, pull her hair, and make a scene. Or play her at her own game and spread a malicious rumour about her slipping E numbers into the other kids’ drinks. A more sensible suggestion might be to take the high ground, ignore her nasty rumours, and keep your head held high.

DECIDING ON THE BREXIT REFERENDUM BAND: The View WHERE: Fibbers WHEN: 11th April 2016 INFO:

HAD THE SAME JEANS BookI’VE or The View are back and FON... w o N tmas their fifth studio Chris inapproaching t g I’m going for one song and Fitalbum. one song only : Same Jeans.

The date is set, On June 23 Britain will decide whether to stay with Europe or back the Brexit. I am torn, completely and utterly unsure. Like any decision there’s pros and cons to both sides. The media have done well to decipher both sides of the story, but the key decision lies with what factors are most important for each individual. The European Union consists of 28 countries, and as far as organisations go, it sits in between the federal system of the United States and the loose co-operation of the United Nations – a bit of a middle grounder.

The EU was a post war organisation set up between states as a super alliance. It democratically controls many things including employment rights and immigration. Ok enough with the jargon. I’m not going to try and persuade you either way, I’m definitely not going to pretend that I know enough about it yet to decide on my vote. However I am going to divulge with you how I’m going to go about making the big, massive, huge decision. First I’m going to decide what is truly important to me, the key aspects that I think will affect me directly

(indirectly everything has an impact, but if I think like this then I’ll never ever make a decision). I’m then going to look at these topics in depth, for quite some time. I might write a few notes in my journal with illustrations. I’ll probably ask my mum and dad because their opinions are important to me; see what they’re thinking and their reasoning behind it. I’m going to keep my newly formed opinion to myself for a few days and see if it sticks, and then I’m going to forget all about it until mid-june and re boot the research.

One thing I am certainly sure about is that we should all care; this decision will affect us all in one way or another. So I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage you to decide what’s important, how you might be affected

Out & about

It’s seems like it was ages ago that I was nattering about the lads (Hello Operator) and all the great things they were doing and how excited I was ( I still am) But it’s all going great now and I’m kind of happy to report that I am officially a tour widow. The lads are currently embarking on a UK tour supporting Frankie and the Heartstrings. It’s dead cool, they razz around in a van seeing interesting parts of the UK, and Pete left with a towel, a pillow and suitcase and warned me he would be back in a week and a half’s time. Day one mostly consisted of moping and eating pizza with best friend and fellow tour widow, Charlie, while we spoke of diet plans and all the squats we are going to do while the boys are away. Day two we eventually

managed to stick to salad and do a half-hearted jog and about 10 squats. Day three followed accordingly. Day four we gave up and drove to Newcastle to see them, a tiny bit skinnier. I’m dead proud of the boys and everything they have achieved. Like seriously, their song was on Hollyoaks the other day. So cool. Now for another round of squats...

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT STeP 1

Although in recent months the River Ouse has been the bane of many of our lives, we thought we’d give it a bit of love this month with a treasure hunt along its banks. Grab your brolly and a sturdy pair of shoes (it might still be muddy, after all!). Start by the king’s Head pub on king’s Staith and begin by walking away from ouse Bridge.

STeP 2 you’ve entered Tower Gardens. keep walking... • When were the gardens laid out in their current arrangement? • Passing Under Skeldergate Bridge, which local residents might have been unconcerned by the recent flooding? • Why might the next bridge along be sad?

STeP 3

• King Street once had another name. What was it? • What ‘quay’ is visible across the water? • What kind of religious people are remembered by a terrace in the area?

Crossing the bridge, keep the river on your right and continue walking. • When was the current bridge built? • Which Villas?

• There is a very appropriately named gate along here. What’s it called?

STeP 4 keep walking, baby. • Find Pikeing Well. In what year was it built? • As you near the Millennium Bridge, you might find yourself on the wrong side of the ‘tracks’. Find the tracks. • Before you cross the bridge, how many miles to Fulford?

STeP 5 Cross the Millennium Bridge • Stop half way across. Why might looking to the left help you tell the time (50 years ago!)? • Look to the right. What can you see of York’s (thankfully small) industrial past?

• Again through the fence, can you spot a bit of Trojan influence? • Heading back towards Skeldergate Bridge, what Close is named after an old gateway in this area? • And just before you reach the bridge, how many miles would it be to walk to Selby? Fancy it?

There, a big chunk of the river walk completed... but that’s not all of it, is it? Come back next month and we’ll be picking up from where we left off. That is, if the damn thing hasn’t flooded us again.

Local

SPORT REPORT with Dan Tait Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence. Do you ever get a sense of de ja vu supporting York City? It seems that every year around this time I write about getting behind the Minstermen in their quest for survival (bar one impressive late run to the play-offs under Nigel Worthington after an abysmal first-half of the season). So it’s that time again when the proverbial over-sized lady clears her throat, although this time it’s going to be the toughest challenge

yet to prevent a return to the abyss (also known as the non-league) after a four year absence. As a supporter you pinpoint certain fixtures in the football calendar as “Must-win”, and one of those was recently at Dagenham and Redbridge. The side rooted to the bottom of the football league; a team whose ground could pass as someone’s back garden, and without a home win all season….that is until York City came to town and succumbed to a 1-0 defeat. So when you cannot pick up even a solitary point there you either have severe problems, or have reached a turning point.

Knowledge of the rear

Fans have voiced their concern about the lack of experience in the back four. We really need an experienced head in there, someone who has played numerous football league games. A bit like John McCombe and Keith Lowe; the centre back partnership that we had during that aforementioned play-off run, who total 630 football league appearances between them yet were both released earlier in the campaign. The energy of youth has been the tactic of choice for manager Jackie McNamara, though reports he had scouted Haxby Under 12s recently has proved unfounded. Jokes aside, four massive home games in April will go a long way to help secure York City’s fate, or great escape (delete as appropriate), with matches against all promotion chasing sides; Leyton Orient (Saturday 2nd April), Wycombe Wanderers (Saturday 9th), Portsmouth (Tuesday 19th), and final home game of the campaign, Bristol Rovers (Saturday 30th).

Every year there seems to be some calls for improving different sports, from video replays in football to adding a windmill on the final hole at the Open, but now red and yellow cards are to be introduced in….cricket! Ideas put forward have included a 10 over sin bin, yet I didn’t realise cricket had a discipline problem. If you ask me, the yellow cards should be saved for those people at Scarborough festival, who seemingly decide to stand up and do the Macarena, all in the batsman’s eye line and wonder why play has stopped.

www.powerheating.co.uk

Onto Boxing now, and is anyone else getting bored of every slightly hyped bout being picked for pay-per-view? As if it wasn’t enough we paid for the Tyson Fury Wladamir Klitschko bore fest, see David Haye blame an ailing toe injury for another turgid viewing with the same opponent, while ‘fight of the century’ Pacquiou Mayweather was as well received as a Noble Peace Prize for Katie Hopkins would be. That’s not to mention Audley Harrison’s best impression of the lion from Wizard of Oz costing £15, we now have had Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg serve up a fight with excitement on a par with an omnibus repeat of Eastenders. Many people point to the fact Quigg broke his jaw in Round Four, though I yawned so much I thought I had acquired the same injury. Finally, tennis star Maria Sharapova has been found guilty of using performance enhancing drugs leading her sponsors Nike to pull the plug on their current deal after announcing they are distancing themselves from the Russian player. Despite the distance they will no doubt still hear her when she next hits a backhand when the ban ends.

We check out a gadget currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.com iMMerSiT. Bit of a whacky one, this. Immersit turns your sofa or favourite living room chair into a vibrating, rumbling, rocking cinema and game seat. Connecting to your TV or games console, it will make the piece of furniture vibrate and lift when something dramatic happens on screen. Explosions, space ships, earthquakes, dinosaurs… prepare for them all to make you feel sick, right at home! Ah, the future is weird.

Hassle-free buying

Selling your car? Easy, isn’t it? Just upload a pic to your favourite online auction site and wait for the offers to come rolling it. However, buying a car these days can be pretty stressful, and if you don’t know all that much about motors, you’re essentially handing over a load of cash to a stranger and trusting that they’re telling you the truth. One modern phenomenon that is quickly catching on across the UK is that of the Car-Buying Agent; companies that search for, inspect, and buy used cars for you. These agencies will even negotiate a cheaper price on your behalf, so even with their fee added on top of the overall cost, you could end up paying less than haggling yourself. It sounds intriguing, but as it is a simple case of emailing the company with what you want, how much you’re prepared to pay, then sitting back and waiting for them to deliver the car to you, buying a vehicle is essentially the same as ordering your weekly shop. What a world we live in.

If we were to tell you that Britain prefers whites, you might get a bit uncomfortable that your favourite free mag was tackling the race issue, and in the motoring section of all places! Well calm down, because the colour in question is actually do with newly registered cars, and how, for the third year running, white is at the top. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, white cars account for 21.4% of all newly registered vehicles, making it the top choice for the entire country (with the exception of the south-east where black is favoured – weirdos). The data has revealed that silver, once daubed on the body of a third of all new cars a decade ago, is dropping in popularity quickly, surpassed by bolder tones and brighter colours. But as white cars tend to show dirt to a greater extent than darker colours, does this mean that the roads will appear grimier? Or is this the start of a massive resurgence for the car cleaning industry? Quick, buy a bucket and sponge and advertise your services in these pages – you’re set to make a mint!

What a blinder!

Matt of Herbert Todd & Sons gives us the low down about renting home appliances.

TV OR NOT TV? When is the right time to buy a new TV? Well, unless yours has just slipped this mortal coil the answer will depend on your attitude to having the latest up-to-date model as much as it will depend on your budget. I am writing about this now because April is a key month in the TV retail calendar, because it’s the month that most of the leading brands will be looking to launch some of their shiny new models. This creates quite a buzz in the showrooms, as we sell off the last of the 2015 stock to make space for the new models. So it’s not a bad time to snap up a bargain if you are not too concerned about technology that is up to 12 months old!

As we get an increasing amount of sunshine each day, your thoughts might already be turning toward a nice new set of blinds. No matter what kind of windows you have, or your taste in styles, we know of a company who can help... and they won't charge you an emperor's ransom. Direct Factory Blinds are a well-established Yorkshire company who continue to go from strength to strength thanks to their expert craftsmanship and friendly customer service. Regardless of what kind of blind you need, they can make it bespoke to you and your property, and fit it without mess or fuss – all at incredibly low prices. For example, three quality vertical blinds can be installed for just £90! Not only that, but all their blinds are guaranteed for five years and they'll even give you a free, no-obligation quote.  Call 08081 558256.

Having seen many of the new products already I can tell you there is much to look forward to this year. Here’s a few things to look out for: HDR, or high dynamic range, promises a huge leap forward in contrast which will make a big difference, particularly when watching in bright lighting conditions. We are also promised another leap forward in colour creation with 10-bit panels, helping to give us the most life-like pictures yet. Add to this gaming without the need for a console and the advances in Smart TV to make catch-up TV easier than ever, and we are hopefully looking at a busy year on the shop floor! Our clearance sale to make way for the new lines starts on the 1st of April, but if you are reading this you can come in straight away and get the sale prices just mention Your Local Link! Choisya

Introduced from Mexico in the early 1800’s, and named after the Swiss botanist Jaques Denis Choisy, this aromatic, evergreen shrub is popular with gardeners thanks to its highly fragrant and abundant flowers.

More commonly known as ‘Mexican Orange Blossom’ or ‘Mock Orange’ due to the resemblance of the flowers to that of the normal orange plant both in shape and scent. As the name suggests the plant is native to southern North America from Arizona and south through to Mexico. Choisya produces leathery, glossy green foliage and star shaped white flowers from late spring to summer. As mentioned the flowers are highly fragrant but the foliage when crushed gives off a distinctive aroma similar to that of Basil. They are an easy to grow, low maintenance shrub making them ideal for both the novice and experienced gardener.

Throughout the year Choisya do not require a lot of pruning but to encourage a second flush of flowers in the autumn, deadhead flowers as soon as they start to drop their petals and cut back around half of the stems by about 12" once the flowers have faded. If you have any frost damaged stems these can be pruned back to where there is new growth but should only be done in the spring time.

Choisya should ideally be planted in early spring. Dig a hole as deep as the container the plant is in and twice the width and plant in firmly adding a handful of bonemeal to the compost as you fill it in. Once planted water the plant thoroughly. And most importantly, enjoy them!

Nature's paintbrush

Some popular varieties of Choisya are C. ternata which produces yellowgreen, glossy leaves and a profusion of white flowers in April. If you want to give a splash of intense colour to your garden, C. ternata ‘Sundance’ has bright yellow foliage which will stand out in any garden to give a dramatic, colourful statement with showy white flowers from around May to June. Choisya dewitteana ‘Aztec Pearl’ produces narrow, glossy light green foliage with pink flower buds that open to white in the spring.

These shrubs generally prefer sun or part shade in well drained soils and can reach heights of anywhere between 1m (3ft 3") to 3m (9ft 9") dependent on the variety. They produce a rounded habit and are very hardy. In the right conditions Choisya can reach their full size, but elsewhere they will benefit if sheltered from cold winds as this can damage the foliage and restrict the growth of the plant. They can also be grown in containers and moved under cover in the winter months for protection.

Q.

Could you give me some advice on growing roses, please? They always grow very poorly in my garden.

A.

Roses are quite easy to grow and are remarkably tolerant. To achieve good results it is only necessary to get a few basic points right. Roses respond well to some extra care and attention by being more floriferous and healthy. Select a site with at least four hours of sunshine each day and where the roots will not be in competition with the roots of other plants. The exception to this rule are ramblers which grow well near trees. Roses will grow in a wide range of soil, but they do appreciate good soil preparation. The addition of well-rotted manure, garden compost, or soil improver before planting will help ensure strong growth. The best way to have healthy roses is to choose disease-resistant varieties. Most English roses introduced over the last ten years have been bred for high disease resistance. However, some might still need our help. We always recommend feeding newly planted and established roses twice a year; at the beginning of the growing season in March to

April, and again in mid-Summer after the first flush of flowers. Use an organic-based rose fertiliser. In the UK (and other places with relatively mild winters) January and February are the best months to prune. On all plants remove very weak, old, woody, dead, and diseased stems. English roses, and other repeat-flowering shrub roses, should be cut-down by between a half and two thirds, but only thinned a little. Roses are one of my favourite flowering plants. They light up any dull day!

Q.

over the last few years i have grown lilies in my garden, but they always get eaten before they reach maturity. Can you help please?

A.

The most common beetle that attacks lilies is a bright red lily beetle, very conspicuous and up to 8mm long. Their larvae is reddish-yellow, hump-backed, and covered with a black slime. They feed on the leaves, stems, and

seed pods of lilies, and also attack fritillaries, nomocharis and polygonatum "solomon's seal". From April onwards both adults and larvae feed voraciously and cause considerable damage when conditions favour them. Adult beetles overwinter in the soil and move up into lilies and other plants from late march onwards. Over several months each female lays 200-300 eggs on leaves and stems. Larvae hatch about ten days after the eggs are laid and feed for about a month before going to the soil to spin silken cocoons in which they pupate. There is normally only one adult generation each year, but overwintering adults continue to emerge from the soil up to June, so that eggs, adults, larvae and pupae may all be present throughout late spring and summer. Keep a clear watch on susceptible plants from April onwards and remove and destroy any beetles, eggs or larvae that appear. If necessary apply a contact insecticide as soon as they are seen in the spring, and repeat the treatment later if infestations persist.

Fresh rhubarb has had a bit of a revival in recent years. What was something of a minority fruit (okay, so it’s strictly a vegetable, but to me anything that can be eaten with custard is a fruit) is now enjoying renewed popularity. Long, pale pink stalks, topped with yellow leaves, are now a regular feature of supermarket aisles, especially in late winter and spring when it is in season.

It is possible to force your own rhubarb by excluding daylight. Covering with an old upturned dustbin is an easy option. This will give pink stems and yellow leaves but, as it doesn’t really provide much additional heat, the stalks won’t be ready any sooner than those grown in the open. It also exhausts the clump so there will be fewer stalks for the rest of the season or following years.

You can’t easily grow rhubarb outside in the garden like that for sale in the shops. Grown in daylight rhubarb will have deep green leaves and red or red/green stalks. It will also take well into the spring to crop often, if the spring is cool, giving no stalks worth picking until well into April.

If you want early rhubarb then it’s best to grow an early cropping type. Many people assume rhubarb is rhubarb, and are surprised that there are different varieties. In fact hundreds of different ones have been developed, although few are now available for sale in garden centres or grown commercially.

eArly riSer For me the outstanding variety is Timperley Early mainly because, as its name indicates, it is always the earliest to crop. Although I’ve other rhubarb types, this is the one that can be relied on to produce stalks in March without any encouragement other than a manure mulch in late winter. The early stalks are long and red and usually of a good thickness. Later in the spring some do tend to go a little green. At this point I tend to

start picking some of my other varieties, especially the strong growing but much later cropping Victoria. If you’ve inherited rhubarb that is ready early in spring, chances are that it’s a Timperley Early. If you haven’t got any rhubarb and would like to give it a try this is the one to go for. Young plants are fairly easily obtainable at garden centres. You can plant at any time of year, but spring is best as plants for sale should have strong new leaves so you can check whether they are a good buy.

diVided we STANd Rhubarb can also be propagated by dividing old clumps. Indeed, most established clumps benefit from division every four to five years as this tends to give them new vigour. The time for this is midwinter when plants are dormant. Dig up an entire clump (the technical terms is ‘crown’), then chop into several pieces with a sharp spade. Each piece should have at least one good bud or growing point at the top. Plant each piece firmly several feet from its neighbours. Be kind in the spring and don’t pull any stalks to help the new plants establish.

Our first day apart My first day back at Your Local Link was incredibly bitter sweet. The dreaded day had finally arrived. Shay, my one and a half year old, was about to embark on his first day at the childminders. We walked slowly up to the door, and I anticipated tears with a huge ball of dread in my stomach. I felt incredibly guilty leaving my little boy at the childminders, and selfishly hoped he might miss me

a little bit too. I’m happy to report that there wasn’t a single tear shed. He simply gave me a smile and waltzed off to play with the other children. (The settling in sessions worked a treat!) The Your Local Link staff are a supportive bunch, so I got through my nausea-inducing first day much easier than I expected. Throughout the day I was sent pictures of Shay doing different activities which was so reassuring and lovely, but part of me felt a little bit envious: I wanted to do all that with him. I was so used to spending every second of the day with him, and making every decision. As time has gone on I’ve felt far less guilty about leaving Shay; he’s learnt so many new activities and developed into such a confident young man. So my advice is this: Yes, it’s really hard letting go, but having freedom and talking to adults for a change is quite nice. My little one has come on in leaps and bounds; to be honest it was easier than I thought it was going to be.

Good to know St John Ambulance’s latest campaign, ‘Nursery Rhymes Inc, teaches parents life-saving skills. The video starring nursery rhyme characters teaches parents how to do CPR on a baby who is unconscious and not breathing. It’s hopefully something none of us will ever need, but definitely important to know. Research by St John Ambulance showed that only one in four parents in Yorkshire and Humber would know how to correctly administer baby CPR.  To watch the Nursery Rhymes Inc video and to book on a course, visit: www.sja.org.uk/ NurseryRhymesInc

Parents will be pleased to know that York has been chosen as one of eight pilot areas to try out the new increased 30 hours free childcare funding. Parents of three to four year olds currently qualify for 15 hours childcare, 38 weeks a year. £13 million has been invested by the government to allow the chosen councils to double to amount of hours paid to nurseries from 15 to 30. Vanessa Warn, owner of Little Green Rascal’s Organic Day Nursery, advised parents to make the most of this fab opportunity: “Book those extra sessions now for September. I’ve found recently that getting a nappy on my little boy can be a race against time. After the wriggling, screaming and crawling in the opposite direction of the nappy changing facility is over, there’s a very small window of time to get said fresh nappy on before the not-soglorious golden arch of wee appears once more. The joys of changing my little cherub is a work out in itself (think of calories burnt!) but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Take care of your canine's canines Has your pet’s breath been stopping you from snuggling up to him on the sofa at night? This bad odour could be an indicator of some serious health risks. Just like us, our pets also need regular check-ups by a dentist to help keep tooth and gum disease at bay. Did you know that 80% of cats and dogs may have some form of dental disease? The good news is that a large majority of these dental problems are treatable and could be prevented. But as our pets can't really tell us what the problem might be, its up to us to spot the signs. Is your pet... • Reluctant to eat or play? • Favouring one side of their mouth when chewing?

• Dropping food from the mouth when eating? • Pawing at their mouth? • Suffering with bad breath and overly salivating? If so, a dental examination by your vet is essential. A thorough look at the animal's mouth will be made and any essential treatments carried out. The vet will also give your pet's teeth a good clean! So to catch potential harmful conditions and diseases early, watch for the signs. For further information about animal dental health, or any questions you might have, call and make an appointment with one of our nurses for a free consultation. For the past 18 years Stagecoach York theatre school has gone from strength to strength and was even recognised as the best out of the 600 world-wide Stagecoach schools. Now they are expanding once again, this time to make it even easier for four to 18 year old kids to the north of the city to strut their stuff. A new weekly class will be held at Joseph Rowntree School on Thursday evenings, perfectly complimenting the classes at Archbishop Holgate’s School on Saturday mornings and afternoons, and those at Scarcroft School on Fridays. Stagecoach provides an outlet to perform and also gives youngsters the freedom to embrace their creativity and express themselves as they learn new skills, all at a school rated 'Outstanding' that also trains young people for professional tours. ASK THE EXPERT

hAiR & bEAUTY Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, talks about how to get rid of those unwanted hairs.

If your minds are already turning to the summer and that bikini you've had your eye on since December, perhaps its also time to think about unwanted hair. No longer a painful plethora of plucking, we hear from Skin Doctor about their painless and remarkable hair removal treatments. Put the tweezers away and ditch the razor, because laser treatment is the perfect solution for woman looking to permanently and painlessly remove that unwanted hair. Our bespoke and professional treatments work well on all skin types and colours and are highly effective on the face, legs, arms, underarms, chest, back, and bikini area. But it isn't just women who might be self-conscious about those embarrassing stray hairs either. Laser Hair Removal works just as well for men, and an increasing number of chaps are booking session to rid themselves once and for all of that ghastly hairy back.

SiNG A dUeT Skin Doctor are proud to announce that they are now offering the brand new Lumenis Duet Hair Removal System, which has only just arrived in the UK after taking America by storm. The treatments are exceptionally fast, painless, and – of course – permanent, and are also offered at a very affordable price. Treatments start from just £45 and are carried out right here in our city-centre clinic on Blossom Street. Lumenis' High Speed LightSheer Duet recently featured on ABC's Good Morning America Health TV show, and has been hailed as the new gold standard for Laser Hair Removal. The hairremoving laser is swept over the specific area of skin, gradually destroying the hair follicles while leaving the skin undamaged. A typical treatment

session takes around ten minutes and all you will feel is a mild, warm sensation of pins and needles. Some patients see the results instantly, while others might have to wait a short while depending on their hair growth cycle. ...GoNe ToMorrow The number of treatments you need all depends on your type of hair and how well your body responds. But one thing is sure; in no time at all the sun will be shining and you'll be set to strut your stuff beneath it with a new-found confidence. If you're taking a trip out of the city to bask in the glory of a Yorkshire springtime, be sure to weight your anchor in Thorton le Clay. Nestled in the pretty village is your new home from home, The White Swan; a family-owned pub with a lot to brag about. Serving fresh home-cooked food every day, sourced from the finest of local produce, The White Swan offers a very warm welcome and the perfect cosy spot to while away a few hours. New chefs Trajan Drew and Alex Temperton have created an exciting array of dishes, specialising in steaks and seafood, as well as putting together a mouth-wateringly good Sunday lunch. As well as the grub, happy patrons

‘Tis the season... … to visit The Mended Drum in Huby. With a name endorsed by the late, great fantasy author himself, Terry Pratchett, The Mended Drum has been going from strength to strength since opening in the quaint north-York village in 2011. However, if you couldn't care less for the origins of the pub's name and consider yourself an ale connoisseur, how about this. York CAMRA, those beer aficionados, have declared The Mended Drum to be their town and country pub of the season for Spring 2016! There are seven craft ales to choose from, which are constantly changing to refresh and invigorate your palate (as well as your beer goggles). Food is served at the Drum Thursday to Sunday, with Thursday night hosting Steak Night – two eight ounce steaks for 15 quid, anyone?  To find out more, call 01347 810264.

SPoTliGHT oN... THe wiNdMill If you've ever wondered why you get covered in flour and shot some suspicious looks while enjoying a pint in the windmill, it's probably because that's Holgate Windmill and they tend not to encourage drinking. Instead, you should try The Windmill on Blossom Street. Following a major redevelopment programme costing more than £200,000, The Windmill is back in business and boasts even more reasons for you, your family, and your friends to drop in for a bit of comfortable refreshment. Situated on the corner of Blossom Street by Micklegate Bar, and but a stone's throw from the train station, The Windmill is one of York's largest and most family (and dog!) friendly public houses.

GRUB IN 'TMILL If hunger blows in (that's a windmill pun, by the way) then you could do a lot worse than visit the pub to sample the delights of their extensive menus. Pub classics are prepared to perfection, including a range of delicious burgers, steaks and pies, as well as a mouth-wateringly good desert menu. They also do a damn fine Sunday roast; one to make your gran proud.

As well as filling the bellies of the populace of York, The Windmill also excels as a live music venue. Local and national bands often take to the pub's stage, and as there is plenty of room in there, you can get up and dance the night away without worrying you're about to spill anyone's drink or step on that dog's feet. Check to see what's on by visiting their website below. So for a versatile pub that will see you happy, fulfilled, and entertained at all times of the day, seven days a week, hang your hat at The Windmill.  Visit www.windmill-inn-pub.co.uk
