LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG

Some new opportunities are being presented to you this month which could change the direction of your life. Frankly, you’d be a fool not to take them! Yes, this might mean sacrificing some of the old to make way for the new, but at the end of the day, it should be very worthwhile. Having said that, avoid reckless gambles but do not be afraid of taking calculated risks – and this is equally applicable to both the professional and emotional aspects of your life.

VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT

“Money makes the world go round with a clinking clanking sound” and that’s a sound you’ll be hearing loud and clear throughout August, which may well turn out to be the best money month you’ve had all year! There will be the payment of monies that are owed to you, and one

STARSIGN OF THE MONTH

cannot discount the possibility of plain old luck money, but primarily it’s down to what you earn, create and generate for yourself. So, maybe not such an active month where relationships are concerned. Your attention is on your job!

LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT

My old granny used to say “I want never gets” but I have found this to be untrue. If you want something enough, you will get it, albeit in some cases, sometime down the line. August is a month for redefining targets and also for receiving something (someone?) you’ve been working to get for a very long time. People who might have been critical of your methods will now have to concede that you were right and they were wrong. Don’t gloat, but do enjoy being vindicated.

SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV

This might turn out to be a difficult month in many respects, for while you are doing your best to sort out

your own problems, other people are putting you under pressure to sort out theirs as well. This could be equally applicable in both your domestic and professional life. The only way to avoid getting stressed out by all of this is to take one step backwards, concentrate solely on your own issues and agendas, and make it clear that this is your line in the sand.

SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV - 21ST DEC

There is an attraction towards all things new which gathers strength over the next few weeks. This could be new jobs, new domestic routines, new cars, fridges and freezers, new relationships or if nothing else, new depths of understanding in existing relationships. Along with this, there is the gradual emergence of a subtle shift in your sense of identity: who you were today is not who you were yesterday and nor is it who you will be tomorrow. Enjoy this gentle transition, and learn from it.

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN

On more than one occasion this month you will find yourself in the role of go-between or peacemaker. You have good work to do here. This is also a month for gaining new self-knowledge and recognising that you are stronger than you thought you were. Some tension on the work scene involving 3rd parties, and here maybe you need to take a step back and let other people sort out the mess. Old faces go, and new faces take their place.

AQUARIUS 2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB

Even if you had half a ton of TNT that still might not be enough to break down the barriers and obstructions you are having to deal with right now, so, sit back, pour yourself a drink, put your feet up, tell the world to sod off… and wait for the seasons and situations to change. In other words, don't force the door open, rather wait for the right time to cross the threshold. And just remember this… as one

HOROSCOPES

door closes there is always another which opens.

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

This is one of those months in which actions speak louder than words, so don’t be backward in coming forwards and taking the lead role in some of life’s little dramas. Tell people what you think and tell them how you feel, and if they don’t like it, that’s got to be their problem, not yours. There will be a marked degree of impatience throughout the month, but this is a good thing because I think you’ve been far too patient for far too long. So full speed ahead… and charge!

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR

A flurry of activity at the beginning of the month! At least one journey which should be as educational as it is vacational, some sort of family reunion within the first 7 or 10 days, and a distinct buzz of opportunity where all things romantic and emotional are concerned. On the downside, some link with insurance companies and you might have to fight for what is rightfully yours, and there may be some concern regarding a family member’s ongoing ill-health.

TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY

A lovely month for relationships between mothers and children and possibly some news of a pregnancy or birth. Workwise there is a sense of growth and optimism as some long-term plans come closer to

fruition. This is also the right time to put some new plans and ideas into action. Family reunions are probable during the first ten days and travel aspects are well starred for the second half of the month. Ignoring the junk mail and the bills, August is also an important month for correspondence.

GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN

A marvellous month for young singles, especially the females, who are looking for some new adventures and some improvement in their love lives. Not such a good month for misogynistic males who fail to realise the fact that they are now living in a woman’s world. Legal papers, contracts and documents are being signed around the 16th/17th and if you’re wondering what to do, go with your gut instincts and you won’t go far wrong.

CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL

An interesting month for Cancerian males, who, much to their own surprise, find themselves on the receiving end of some of life’s sweet riches. A good month for the ladies as well, providing they are prepared to follow a degree of male leadership. If not, there will be problems, because the bottom line here is that you follow the man or you lose the man. In divisions or loyalties between children and partners, bite the bullet and put the partnership first.

WALKING WITH THE WANDERER

Walk information

Melbourne and the Pocklington Canal

Starting from Melbourne this walk takes tracks and quiet lanes before following the Pocklington Canal. There is an option to shorten the walk to less than three miles.

Is This Walk For Me?

This easy walk traverses the flat countryside around Melbourne. Nearly half of it follows the Pocklington Canal on the largely grassy towpath. Much of the remainder is on tarmac lanes where, apart from one short stretch of about 150 metres on a busy section, there’s virtually no traffic. The rest of the walk is on paths and farm tracks. There are no stiles to cross. While the route should not be overly muddy at any time of year, sections, can be flooded in winter.

Getting There

Melbourne is just over 12 miles from York via the A1079 and B1228, then keeping ahead to the village at Rossmoor Garage. There is ample roadside parking in Melbourne near the Melbourne Arms pub. Unfortunately, there is no viable public transport option for this walk. It is also possible to begin the walk from Thornton where there is roadside parking.

Refreshments

The only option is the Melbourne Arms in Melbourne. The pub currently seems to be open from 5pm daily and at lunchtime from Friday to Sunday.

What To See

The partly navigable Pocklington Canal is rich in wildlife. Sections of it, and some of the surrounding lowland meadows, are part of the Lower Derwent National Nature Reserve. The meadow areas contain a rich flora and in winter are frequented by various migrant birds. There are interpretation boards along the canal that give information on various features including bridges and locks. The straggly village of Melbourne has a few interesting buildings as does Thornton.

Melbourne and the Pocklington Canal

Directions

1. With the pub behind you go right along the main street, continuing to pass the village hall on the left and the school to the right. Just beyond a road sign and seat at the junction with Kidd Lane to the left take a track to the right (footpath sign) between gardens. Follow the track to a bridge over the canal.

2. Cross the bridge ignoring the towpath alongside the canal to keep straight ahead on a grassy path into the field walking towards, then beside, with a line of bushes to the right. Climb a bank and go over a wooden footbridge. Follow the path over the corner of a grassy field to continue with the boundary to the right. Pass through a kissing gate then walk left for ten metres to the field corner. Turn right for 50 metres then turn left on a track over a field. Stay on this track as it curves, soon with a fence to the left then a grassy/treed area to the right, to eventually arrive at a narrow tarmac lane.

3. Ignore the footpath opposite and turn right on the lane which is a dead end and so carries little traffic. Now remain on the lane until it is joined by a wider road from the left

Time: 2 1/2 hours

Distance: 5 1/2 Miles

on the edge of Thornton village. Keep ahead here on the main street to reach a small green by the church.

4. Ignore the road right by the church continuing ahead for about a kilometre on the quiet road. (For the short walk turn right at the church (Church Road) following it to the canal bridge just beyond Thornton Lock (Direction Point 7) at which turn right to continue on the main walk).

5. Just after a pylon on the right turn off the road onto an even quieter road (Sand Lane). Continue on this road for about 350 metres to a T-junction. Turn left proceeding with care along this busier road for about 150 metres to a track with a footpath sign leading to Woodhouse Farm.

6. Follow the track to the farm but approaching the house do not go into the garden but turn left with the garden/trees to the right. At the end of the trees in 50 metres go ahead on an earth track across an open field. Continue through the next field to the canal bridge.

7. Do not cross the bridge but take the grassy path right alongside the canal which is now followed most of the way back to Melbourne.

In more detail: about a

kilometre after joining the canal stay by the water going under a road bridge; pass Thornton lock, soon after which go under a further road bridge; continue for a further 600 metres to a swing bridge.

8. Go over the swing bridge and take the track ahead with the short Melbourne arm of the canal and boats to the left. Remain on the track to reach the road in Melbourne with the starting point pub to the left.

Time Travel

THIS MONTH: HESLINGTON HALL

In this edition of Time Travel, we’ve set out a little beyond York’s vibrant city centre into the leafy suburb of Heslington to take a look at the Grade II listed building and its serene gardens. The Hall is located on the intersection of tree-lined University Road and Main Street Heslington. From its grand front gates you can also see Heslington’s equally picturesque church and beautiful grounds. The original Manor House was constructed over the years 1565-8 for Sir Thomas Eynns and his wife Elizabeth; he was a long serving MP and held the position of Secretary

and Keeper of the Seal to the Council of the North. This was an important administrative body set up to keep rising political and religious tensions under control, an endeavour that ultimately failed as northern dissent culminated in open rebellion during the Revolt of the Northern Earls in 1569. After Eynns sold the estate in 1601, ownership of the Hall passed through the Hesketh and Yarburgh families until it was passed on to Yarburgh Greame of Sewerby Hall upon his wife Sarah Yarburgh’s death. Yarburgh Greame (confusingly also adopting the surname Yarburgh!) took the opportunity to make some changes and commissioned the architect Philip Charles Hardwick to rebuild the Hall in the Victorian Jacobethan style that we see today. It remained as a private residence

for some years until the outbreak of the Second World War, when Nicholas de Yarburgh-Bateson (4th Baron Deramore) vacated the premise and allowed it to be used by the Royal Air Force, it would never again be formally occupied, as much like the rest of the country the Hall was fundamentally changed by the war. It remained under military control until February 1948, when it was passed back into private ownership. The Hall was then repurposed by the conservation architect Sir Bernard Feilden, (whose other notorious works include the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal) and was made into the administrative headquarters for the University of York.

Behind the Hall itself lies a Dutch styled garden, in a fashion that was made popular with the arrival of William of Orange. The garden was created by James Yarburgh and is dated as far back as the reign of Queen Anne (1702-1714). It contains regimented topiariased evergreen trees, so enticing that before you know it you’re walking between them and are led into the peaceful

solitude of a two storey gazebo, aptly named ‘the quiet place’ — from up there you get unrivalled views of Heslington.

These views extend across the University lake which allow you to spot a multitude of bird species. Tucked behind that is a private walled garden as well as an Orangerie; being able to grow your own exotic fruits was all the range for the 18th century aristocracy. Nearer to the Hall, a long rectangular pool extends with 8 fountains that perfectly mirror the geometric layout of the trees, giving the impression of order whilst also providing an audible sense of serenity.

The Hall itself is not accessible to the public as it is a working University building, however the surrounding grounds are well worth a visit. You can even go see the sculpture named “Dryad” by Artist Austin Wright located to the rear of Heslington hall.

Shhhhh, want to know a secret?

This is the advertising industry method (or at least it should be) of how hard your advertising budget is working for you.

It’s called ‘cost per thousand’.

So, what does that mean?

It’s quite simple really, but excellent at measuring how effective your advertising budget is in reaching your target audience; or if you would be better spending it in another publication. Here’s how it works…

It is based on the circulation of your chosen publication and the cost of your advertisement.

It is always important to compare like-for-like, so using circulation and not readership is, we feel a more accurate comparison tool.

For those who are confused between circulation and readership, circulation is the number of copies of a publication

printed and circulated, and readership is how many people are estimated to read it.

Readership is a difficult figure to come by as it is mostly based on

industry norms for various types of publications and not facts. Circulation is more of a proven and accurate measure as publishers tend to know how many of their

To illustrate we are going to use Your Local Link magazine and another local comparable type of magazine as examples. Your Local Link magazine has a circulation of 91,000 copies per month.

An 1/8th page advertisement in

Your Local Link magazine (an A4 magazine) costs £175 per month and reaches 91,000 letterboxes.

So, the cost to reach 1,000 letterboxes with Your Local Link is 1.93pence (£175 divided by 91).

The equivalent sized advertisement (1/4 page) costing £106 in another local A5 publication that has a circulation of 5647 letterboxes works out at 18.77pence per 1000 letterboxes (£106 divided by 5.647).

So where is your budget better spent? Paying nearly 19pence per 1000 letterboxes or 1.93pence per 1000 letterboxes?

I’ll leave the decision up to you.

If you would like to know how to work out the cost per ‘000 price for other advertisement sizes and other publications, please just get in touch with one of our expert team members on 01904 767881.

TOP TIPS FOR THE PERFECT ROAD-TRIP

With the summer holidays in full swing almost all of us are going to find ourselves taking on the sometimes daunting prospect of a family road trip to the other-side of the country; whether that be to visit family, to attend an event or festival, or as the first leg of a big summer holiday. Here at Your Local Link we firmly believe that the road trip, when done properly, can be as fun as the rest of your holiday, so here’s our list of top tips and hacks to set you at ease and make every journey joyous.

PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE

There's no substitute for good preperation, especially considering what a study from Perry's revealed in 2021, that over a third of arguments during road trips begin over poor directions — it’s more important than ever to make sure not to leave planning your route until the last minute.

Directions and a reliable Sat Nav should be the first step, but this should be followed by a great collection of snacks, we recommend investing in a cool-box to keep drinks cool and keep you refreshed so that if you do hit traffic on a hot afternoon, you don’t overheat at all.

GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME FOR BREAKS

Regular breaks are essential in preventing your driving from feeling like a chore, these can be at service stations; allowing

you to take onboard extra snacks, or to appreciate roadside views. However we recommend you schedule your stops to coincide with any roadside destinations or British landmarks you’ve been meaning to visit. There’s no better path to making your holiday feel like it’s started early than a spot of tourism. On the journey from London to York alone there’s countless accessible sights. Our highlights are Hardwick Hall, just a five minute detour from the M1 and kids favourite Windsor which of course features LegoLand.

KEEP THE KIDS ENTERTAINED

Kids entertainment is a non-negotiable on a long trip. Make sure their iPad’s or tablets are charged, bring colouring pens for drawing and magnetic board games often make for hours of fun. For those of us who struggle with car sickness a great alternative is a fun playlist, podcast or audiobook.

These tips should get you started turning your journey into an extra day of holiday, for more specifics on planning ahead with your route, make sure to visit www.theaa.com/route-planner/route.

Kitchen drains can often get a build up of bacteria which can cause funky smells in your home. Start by tipping 1 cup of soda crystals down your drain, then add 1 cup of vinegar. This will cause a fizzing reaction, and should see away any food residue. Then pour 1 cap full (approx. 10ml) of concentrated multi-purpose disinfectant to leave your sink smelling as fresh as a daisy.

Micro-wave goodbye to grime

In a microwavable jug, add 500ml water and two tablespoons of vinegar. Heat on full power for 7 minutes and then leave in your microwave for an additional 3 minutes to let the steam really do it's ping! The steam will not have only loosened those stuck-onspillages but it will have disinfected and deodorised your microwave. You can now wipe away the grime effortlessly.

Bin those bad odours

Bins are another place where nasty odours like to play. Now, you

can buy

a product specifically for this (and they do work!), but an even cheaper hack is just to pop some soda crystals in the bottom of your bin, along with a kitchen towel soaked in concentrated disinfectant. The crystals will mop up any bin juice that collects and the disinfectant will keep things smelling sweet.

A Good Year for Plums?

It looks, as I write a month or so before the first trees will have ripe fruit, to be a good year for plums. This makes a change as the last few seasons have been disappointing. Various difficulties had me wondering whether there’d ever be a worthwhile crop of plums again. It’s still too early to be sure there’ll be a decent harvest this year but some of the trees, notably the cooker Early Rivers and especially the late-ripening Marjorie’s Seedling have lots of hanging, albeit still very green, fruit. Miraculously, there are even some plums set on the notoriously shy fruiting but delectable Old

Greengage. The only trees to let the show down are Victoria and Czar out on the field orchard which, being more exposed, was affected by poor late March and early April weather.

Quite why this plum season looks more promising than in recent years is unclear. What is apparent though are some of the causes of recent poor pickings. Late frosts are a perpetual plague for the plum grower. It seems the trend to milder winters has induced earlier flowering, making blossom vulnerable if temperatures dip well below zero on a still and clear late March night.

This year, with the spring slow and fitful, flowering was delayed so that any frost, at least in the sheltered garden, was less intense by the time the trees

reached peak bloom comparatively late in early April. Another habit, from which a number of the trees may have benefited, is the tendency of some plum varieties to take ‘rest’ years. These are seasons following a heavy crop where a tree will carry next to no fruit. It could be, after a couple of years' break from fruiting, some of the trees can set and sustain more plums. Another cause of poor plum crops in recent seasons has been wood pigeons. These birds, which are now ever-present in most gardens, have developed a taste for young plum leaves as they emerge in spring. In tearing at the leaves they not only strip the foliage from any branches thick enough to allow them to perch but also knock off fruit buds with their crashing and clattering. This year wood pigeons were as plentiful as ever but while many were partly stripped of leaves; the impact on blossoming, perhaps because there were more buds, appears to have been less damaging.

All this bodes well for a good crop, but there’s one final threat that could yet mean, while there may be plums a plenty, many will be despoiled. I’ve mentioned previously that one of the perils

of plum growing is the plum moth (Latin name Grapholita funebrana) which has become more prevalent over the last ten or so years. It’s in July that this insect is most active. The eggs it lays on swelling fruit hatch into caterpillars that burrow deep into the flesh of plums. Infested fruits, which the caterpillar has often left before it is picked, have a mushy brown centre that is acrid in taste. It’s often difficult to be sure whether a plum has been attacked until it is cut open. Eating plums straight from the tree can be an adventurous experience in a bad moth year! Hopefully, the plum moth will not be too severe this season. Pheromone traps can be deployed to trap male moths but these are expensive and far from perfect in providing protection. Previous experience suggests it’s just as effective to rely on the strength of numbers. In a year where a lot of plums have set a lower proportion are likely to be invaded by the moth. A good plum year is overdue; let’s hope this will finally be it!

A Special Focus on York Against Cancer

This August at Your Local Link we are very excited to be promoting the efforts of York Against Cancer, a local charity who have raised over £20 million for cancer patients.

Back in February they announced the opening of the Leveson Centre at the LNER Community Stadium, after years of fundraising and construction. The Centre is just the latest development from a charity that has been looking out for the

hardest hit in our community for the last 36 years. Their mission is to make a difference to everyone affected by cancer and have continued to do so through groundbreaking research - by providing free minibuses to St James’ Hospital in Leeds and the funding of a chemo treatment unit among a host of other services.

York Against Cancer CEO Julie Russell explains: “When a patient receives a cancer diagnosis it

There are countless ways to volunteer so if you would like to lend a hand at one of their shops, offer time and experience within The Leveson Centre; help out with admin in the office, bake cakes for events, or be a York Against Cancer marshal during a run, any time you can spare is invaluable. not only affects them but their family as well. At the Leveson Centre, we offer a non-clinical environment where cancer patients can access support and care along with a support group specifically for friends and family. Since opening the doors in February, we have listened to what support patients want and have grown the services accordingly. We are now offering complementary therapy, specialist lingerie fitting, and

relaxation classes.

“It is important to York Against Cancer to provide support and care to cancer patients as we understand the difficulties and challenges cancer can bring to a family, we want to be there for as many people as possible – we can get through this together.”

Taking the Battle Against Cancer into their Own Hands.

The success of the charity, let alone the running of a minibus that travels over 16,000 miles each year for patients, would not have been possible without the support of its brilliant volunteers. This year has been no exception as the charity raised more than £81,000 through the inspirational efforts of their community, organising countless incredible fundraisers.

This month we want to take time to focus on the exalting efforts made by some of the most dedicated and defiant contributors to York’s fight against Cancer. The first of these is a lady called Claudine and her family, including her seven-yearold son Ebben, who took time out of their busy lives to complete the 115km Camino de Santiago trek. When her friend Rachael was diagnosed with leukaemia, Claudine was inspired to set herself a challenge and make a difference for people living with cancer.

Claudine said: “When Rachael told me the news I felt helpless.

Watching my friend suffering so much and knowing there was nothing I could do to take away her suffering, I decided to embrace life. Rachael has made a huge difference in many people’s lives and continues to do so through her unconditional love for others and her selflessness towards people in need. She is our inspiration and has got us through each day.” Another unbelievable story of courage comes from local lad Luke and his friends. They responded through defiance rather than despair after their friend Harry Cook was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma, Luke and his friends decided to show their support and raise money for York Against Cancer by undertaking a charity head shave. By the time donations closed, they had more than doubled their goal of £1500, raising over £3300 for the charity.

At York against Cancer you can find so many more examples of people taking responsibility to

change someones life for the better. When one person like Luke goes out of their way and makes the commitment to help out, it can make the world of difference. Following Luke’s example hundreds of people came together, some of who didn’t personally know Harry Cook, but were inspired as we are by Luke’s fund-raising to lend a hand: they helped more than double Luke’s initial target. Charities like York Against Cancer really help bring the best out of us and our community and hearing these stories serves as a constant reminder of how special York is as a place to live, it’s a truly

loving community that cares.

If you’re inspired by Luke, Claudine and Ebben and think you might have a little spare time make sure you get in contact. Who knows how far your volunteering will go. Whether you have been personally affected by cancer or simply want to give something back to the community, York Against Cancer always appreciate your fundraising efforts.

The Leveson Centre

The first thing all that hard work fundraising made possible this year is without doubt York Against Cancer’s brand-new cancer support centre, The Leveson Centre, which after years of dedication is now open!

Brought to life by generous donations and community efforts, the centre is the perfect space for local cancer patients and their loved ones to begin their journey from diagnosis to recovery.

It’s a space not only for patients themselves but also for their friends and families to receive advice in an intimate environment- most sessions are limited to a maximum of only six people. York Against Cancer has worked hard for nearly four decades to make what can be an extremely challenging process easier for patients and the new centre has taken the shape of a central hub for all those efforts. To make getting started even easier, York Against Cancer are offering 6 FREE sessions of complimentary therapy. These sessions include time with an on-site occupational therapist or meetings with Rebecca, a clinical psychologist who works closely alongside her adorable support dog Luna. Once patients are into the flow of things at the new Centre they’re invited to get involved in a wider brochure of treatments including aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, reflexology, reiki and more! For those days in which visitors are just

looking for advice in a more casual setting, the charity want patients to feel welcome to pop in for a cuppa in a safe, friendly but non-clinical environment. The holistic nature of the support options makes the centre the perfect complement to the formal care patients receive from York hospital.

Fuelled by weekly coffee mornings every Wednesday from 10-12:30am and a Friends and Family Support Group one Thursday per month, the community has grown exponentially, with over 1,300 people walking through the doors since opening. The meetings have helped foster great discussions between those with similar experiences over well-being tips and financial advice.

The Leveson Centre is a touching tribute to one of the charity's founders, Professor Steve Leveson, a retired Consultant Surgeon who helped set up the YAC 36 years ago. He is renowned for his genuine compassion and has touched the lives of thousands of people across North and East Yorkshire, it is only fitting that all those who set foot in and receive care at the centre know his name, without whom York Against Cancer would not exist.

Get in touch on 01904 202647 or email support@thelevesoncentre.org.uk to find out more about The Leveson Centre, offer your services as a volunteer or to attend a support group.

Free transport for radiotherapy treatment

Unfortunately York hospital does not yet have the facilities to perform radiography scans in house, meaning most cancer patients have to travel for appointments at St James’ hospital in Leeds. To make what is already a long journey for most locals worse, there are currently no direct public transport links to the hospital. York Against Cancer understand well that such an important journey should not add further trauma to the experiences of patients so

run an exclusive minibus free of charge to ferry them to and from St James’.

The minibus runs daily, transporting those from in and around York who might find it difficult to organise the journey themselves. The offer of a lift means reduced stress, no fuel or parking costs and less reliance on family and friends.

The best part of the service is how it invites those who would otherwise be taking a lonely journey, into a new community

Bringing cancer care to you

Back in 2017 York Against Cancer made one of its largest ever contributions to the care of our community, donating £700,000 to help launch Yorkshire’s first Mobile Chemotherapy Unit (MCU).

The MCU was built to help people living on the outskirts of York have easier access to the treatment they need, those who require chemotherapy can have treatment in an appointment of less than 15 minutes.

The unit will call at Malton, Selby, Scarborough and

of camaraderie and shared experience that immediately eliminates anxiety and stress. Their service continues to run just as smoothly as when it was first launched in September 2022, now with a little more style and comfort. If you get in contact with York Against Cancer one of the team will be happy to organise your lift. If necessary, they will even consult with the booking office at St James’ Hospital

Bridlington. With four treatment chairs, it will be able to accommodate up to 10 patients a day in modern, comfortable surroundings. Allowing patients in Scarborough and the outskirts of York to receive full treatment in the time it would’ve taken them to survive the traffic of getting into the city, cutting down on stressful hour long commutes into Scarborough and York. It is a convenient and compassionate response that serves to make the lives of

patients much easier. In its first year and a half, the unit saw more than 1,500 visits, with some patients visiting over 20 times.

Last year, York Against Cancer was pleased to put the wheels back in motion after pausing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The service is glad to provide a more convenient location for cancer patients while alleviating some of the strain on the main hospitals. Talk to your doctor and see if you’re eligible for treatment on the MCU.

A place in the country

It’s important to understand the mental and physical toll a cancer diagnosis can take on both patients and their loved ones. It’s been a difficult year for everyone and it doesn’t take much to cast your mind back just a few months to the start of 2023, when energy prices were soaring, it’s impossible to imagine how much more difficult this period must have been for cancer patients. That’s why it’s so important that charities like York Against Cancer are here to help.

They understand that time away to relax, regroup and recharge are an invaluable part of the recovery journey. After the successful opening of a free seaside holiday home in 2017, York Against Cancer announced the opening of a second home in April 2023. This time the tranquil countryside village of Yapham will play host to the well deserved rest patients deserve.

Cancer patients can enjoy a three night break at the beautiful Old Tithe Cottage built

for two thanks to the generous donation of its use by Hazel and Phil, the home’s owners. Hazel and Phil have a personal connection to cancer, and after a 13 year renovation of a disused dairy farm, bolstered by local businesses and corporations, they decided to donate the use of the completed cottage to York Against Cancer. The couple understands cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery can be an overwhelming process, and they hope to provide a peaceful and calming environment for those who need it. York Against Cancer respite properties are available for patients under the care of York & Scarbrough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

To book a three or four night stay at either of these respite properties, get in touch on 01904 764466 or email office@ yorkagainstcancer.org.uk.

Vital cancer research at the Jack Birch Unit in York

Cancer research has always been at the heart of York Against Cancer’s mission, and they have been supporting scientists at the University of York since their earliest days. Back in 1992, when York Against Cancer was only five years old, they opened the Jack Birch Unit, where they’ve done groundbreaking research into understanding the causes, prevention and treatment of bladder cancer ever since. Cancers of that type receive relatively little research attention despite

being one of the ten most common adult cancers. Recently, the team has made some incredible discoveries in how cancers may go undetected by the body, once detected bladder cancer has an 80% survival rate. Making the research done at the unit beyond vital to the York community, where bladder cancer is above the national average. Find out more on their website: www. yorkagainstcancer.org.uk

SUPERSTORE NEEDS SIGNUPS

Barnardos are looking for a team of volunteers to support the staff at their brand new Monks Cross superstore.

The shop is York’s biggest charity shop, and has already had a fantastic reaction from the community since opening just before Christmas. However it’s important to remember that Barnardos are much more than a source of brilliant bargains, their profits make a real difference to vulnerable children and their families. Last year alone the charity provided support to over 350,000 people.

Store manager, Lisa Haywood is keen to express the benefits of helping out and had this to say: ‘Volunteering, is a great

way to meet new people, learn useful skills or gain valuable work experience.’

As well as supporting a cause that managed to raise over £40 million last year, volunteering can be a hugely enriching personal experience.

Lisa makes clear how volunteers can start out casually: ‘We are not after a full day or a commitment every week, although that would be amazing but just a couple of hours here and there, would really help us out.’

‘We already have some fabulous people on board, of all ages but we still have many areas of the shop, that we need support with.

Whether that be organising and sorting jewellery, creatively organising our picture wall or bric a brac section, processing clothing or working on our tills. We also need someone who knows vinyl.’

To find out more information please visit: https://volunteer.barnardos. org.uk/opportunities/ and make sure to search for York.

Can you give us a home?...

A couple of brilliant characters are looking for a new home and we really hope a couple of you can help us find them one.

Pickled Egg Female, 6 months.

Petite Pickle has had a stressful beginning to her life, having found it difficult to get the attention she deserves in a multi-cat household. To help her cope a little better with all of the changes she’s endured, we think she needs a quiet and relaxed home. Understandably she finds it easier to observe from the comfort of her cozy igloo bed and we hope a relaxed cosy environment will help us see the very best of Pickle.

Long Johns Male, 9 years

This sassy chap goes by the name of Long Johns, and a warmer pair of leg attire you’d probably struggle to find. This rather dapper and sophisticated gentleman cat has bags of personality too. A word of warning though…. don’t be fooled by his good looks. Long Johns can be a bit of a diva when the fancy takes him! Often, he’s a right charmer though and uses those baby blues and floofy tail to get exactly what he wants! Top of Long Johns list of requirements? Lots of adoring admiration, regular fuss and a south facing garden for that all important sun worshipping!

If you think you’ve got space for either of these two, contact York Cats Protection Adoption Centre via www.cats.org.uk/york.

Rewarding Sharron’s Care

Following a 23 year career that began as a temporary three-month contract, Sharron Smith was given the ultimate promotion in April— appointed as the CEO of York Carers Centre. When she first started, Sharron may have never imagined rising so high up in the charity, but those who have witnessed her career up close know York Carers Centre could do no better. One such person is Rosmarie Temple from the Chair of Trustees who commented: “Sharron brings a wealth of experience to the role, in both the ‘Carers field’ and ‘charity sector.”

Sharron’s heavy involvement in the development of the Young Carers service put the York Centre on the map. Unlike others at the time, the service offered direct support to young people aged between 5 and 18 who were helping to look after someone at home, Sharron made the York centre one of the first in the country to do so. Sharron responded graciously to the

promotion: “I am truly honoured to have this role and I’d like to thank the Trustees, staff team and carers for their support. I hope to build on this and continue to ensure the centre maintains its positive reputation in the city. I am very proud to be part of such a wonderful organisation which is genuinely passionate about supporting carers and really does keep carers at the forefront of everything they do.” Her promotion is more than deserving and demonstrates York Care Centre’s commitment to its core principles as her central role in caring for her community has not gone unnoticed. For more information on all the fantastic work done by Sharron and everyone at York Carers Centre visit https://yorkcarerscentre.co.uk.

Social Yorkies IVC: Your Key to the Community

Social Yorkies makes for a great environment to meet new people and learn more about events that are happening in and around York. They run around 20 events each month from club and open mic nights to the more relaxed evening stroll or a pizza and glass of wine. An annual membership of £20 invites you into a brand new community of over 120 members and as busy a social calendar as you like. Since the non-for profit club is run by

its members, this allows newcomers the opportunity to run and organise events as soon as they’re comfortable enough. Their monthly clubnights held on a weekend in a central pub in York are informal gatherings where they meet up, have a drink and get to know each other, making for the best environment for any potential new members to come along and find out more about the club. Ben's Book Corner

Your Local Link reader, Ben Robinson, and his monthly book recommendations are back! Here are some of his suggestions for this month…happy reading!

There’s something comforting about picking up an old classic. For me, a classic book feels like home. It's a timeless one which everyone has heard of, or one which you re-read often. I thought I would share with you a couple of my timeless favourites, which I pick up year after year, as well as some other must-reads.

‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ by Tennessee

Without fail, each year I pick this book up. Described by the observer as ‘One of the greatest American plays.’ It follows fading southern belle Blanche Dubois through various trials and tribulations after she has wound up living with her sister. Will Blanche be able to claw her way back from the edge, or will she be forgotten forever?

‘Murder on the Orient Express’ by Agatha

This book is a modern classic, full of mystery, wit, humour, and drama. For anyone new

to Christie's novels, this is a brilliant place to start.

You’ll meet famous fictional detective Poirot, whilst he tries to solve the riveting mystery of the murder on the Orient Express.

‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ by Truman

Picture the scene, in a bustling 1940s NYC. Meet Holly Golightly, a socialite. But what if I said she wasn’t just like any other girl? This is the ultimate classic boy meets girl novel for anyone wanting the romance of the big city.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ by

This book became an instant classic with readers around the world. Set in a dystopian world, it follows Offred, a young woman in Gilead, where women have few rights. Will she be able to survive, or will the world destroy her? It was more recently adapted into a TV series, definitely worth a watch after reading the book.

Review: Hotel du Vin Sunday Lunch

York is known for its beautiful eateries, but this might be the pick of the bunch. The hotel is just a five minute walk from the historic city walls and yet its doors spill out into a surprisingly tranquil street, tucked away from the hustle and bustle you expect in such a central location.

We’ve been desperate for a table ever since the 2019 refurbishment, and this month Your Local Link’s Mim and her daughter were lucky enough to book in for their Sunday Lunch.

Having lived in York for 20 years, when I look for places to have a Sunday Lunch hotels are not always the first thing that pops to mind. Fortunately this week that choice was made for me — I had the privilege of going to the Hotel du Vin where I was delighted to learn that their delicious dining doesn’t just cater to guests but is open to residents too.

Pulling up to the spacious car

park, you are immediately blown away by the hotel grounds and can see why this Georgian Grade 2 listed building would be an ideal choice for special celebrations and weddings.

On entering the beautifully decorated restaurant we were greeted by their lovely staff who enlightened us with their vast knowledge of the menu. They really can’t help you enough, even starting off by making sure water was on the table. It isn’t long however before they put their expert knowledge to good use by guiding you towards the stronger stuff. I couldn’t resist the Sunset Serenade cocktail. There is also a lovely choice of wines that you can pair up with whatever food selection you choose from. We went for a traditional 3 course Sunday Lunch, but this wasn’t compulsory even though it was Sunday, you can still pick from their their regular main menu. The

starter is done as a delicious French Market Table (another name for a posh buffet), it includes a choice between prawns, salmon, soups, salads and beautifully baked fresh bread. The choices were elegantly displayed and tasted so good that we almost forgot we were there for a full three course meal and not just the Market Table. If you order one yourself be sure to be mindful not to fill up too much. Naturally both myself and my daughter Molly went all out and opted for the beef Sunday dinner. We had zero regrets as the beef was cooked to perfection. I am actually prepared to say that it’s the best beef I have ever tasted on a Sunday Lunch, which I’m sure you’ll appreciate is a huge thing to admit, particularly at a French restaurant. The beef may have been the main event but I must mention the Yorkshire puddings which were simply magnificent and were accompanied by a lovely

selection of vegetables and gravy. The delicious surprises didn’t end there as I discovered my favourite ever dessert of crème brulee on the menu, they must have known I was coming. It made my day seeing this as a choice and it didn’t disappoint with an amazing crusty top and such a plentiful portion that I only just managed to finish it.

Everything was faultless — you get such a high level of service, from fantastically cooked food to attentive staff. It really was the perfect Sunday and the price for 2 course of £29.95 and 3 courses for £34.95 makes it worth every penny. If you do book you’ll probably see me there again next week.

Hotel Du Vin is located at 89, The Mount, York. To book a table call to speak to one of the team today on 01904 405260.
