WALKING WITH

THE WANDERER Haxby’s Byways and Backwaters

Starting from the centre of Haxby, on this walk you’ll visit Wigginton before taking an old farm track to reach a newly created woodland managed by the Woodland Trust. After negotiating alleys and Haxby’s southern outskirts, the route arrives at the River Foss by Huntington Church. The river is then followed for one-and-a-half miles back to Haxby.

Is This Walk For Me?

This is an easy, flat, walk. Although there are a few potentially muddy stretches, most of the route is on hard surfaces— making it suitable for a winter outing.

Getting There

The recommended starting point is Haxby Memorial Hall opposite a shopping parade on The Village. It would also be possible to start the walk at several other points, including from Earswick and Huntington by crossing the Foss. Haxby is four miles north of York following Haxby Road from Gillygate. There are frequent buses to Haxby, the most convenient is no.1 which is avaliable from the station and Theatre Royal. Alight opposite Haxby Memorial Hall.

Refreshments

There are numerous options in Haxby & Wigginton including The Black Horse in Wigginton.

What To See

Although the route follows close to houses and roads it has a surprisingly rural feel. Westfield Wood, managed by the Woodland Trust is a good example of recently created native species woodland. The pleasant walk alongside the Foss provides an opportunity to see a range of wildlife. More information on what may be seen is available on the Rover Foss Society’s website at riverfosssociety.co.uk

Haxby’s Byways and Backwaters Time: 2 1/4 hours Distance: 5 miles

1. With the Co-op supermarket behind you

and the Memorial Hall opposite, go left along the main street (The Village), soon passing the Tiger Inn. Continue for about 700 metres until just beyond the Cottage Inn, then take the signed public footpath on your left between the fences. Keep ahead at a barrier, then go left before turning almost immediately right following Back Lane (with the church left). Go right at the next junction (still Back Lane) but in 50-metres turn left. Pass the school but as the road bends left keep on a track to the right of the houses.

2. Follow the track with houses to the left

and fields to the right. Keep going as it narrows and partly runs between hedges (ignoring a way off to the left). Eventually you’ll arrive at a kissing gate on the edge of Westfield Wood.

3. Enter the wood. For the shortest route

take the left path through the trees which takes you straight to Direction Point 4. To walk through the wood take either of the paths to the right. The rightmost keeps to the wood-edge which is closest to the fields on the right, before turning left at the right corner. The middle path takes a clear route through the wood. Both meet at the wood’s far corner. Once there, do not follow the path right but go left for a few metres — towards the houses opposite, to reach a ditch. Turn left to walk alongside the ditch with houses over to the right and the wood left. Both this path and the shortest route meet at a footpath sign by a redundant kissing gate.

MEMORIALS

4. At the footpath sign go left (right if you’ve taken the longer walk through the wood) crossing the ditch to follow a path between gardens. Cross a road and keep ahead on the path between houses. At a metal gate go right then left. Keep ahead and cross the road in front of houses to continue on the path as it angles left to reach some barriers. Next turn right through the parking area, cross a road, and then keep ahead on a tarmac footpath before you pass through further barriers to arrive at the main road. 5. Turn right on the road. Cross and

continue over a mini roundabout and level crossing, then take the underpass beneath the ring road. 125 metres later you’ll see a sign for Tregarth Stables, at this point you should turn left on an enclosed path.

6. Follow this to a gate, pass through and

continue for a short distance until you reach a signpost at a crossing track. Turn right here, then after 50 metres —where the hedge to the left ends— go half-left to move diagonally across the field aiming towards the left of the trees by a pylon. You’ll reach a kissing gate. In the next field continue to move diagonally across the grass to reach the river.

7. Turn left and follow the river right.

Continue in the same direction for about a kilometre to pass under the ring-road bridge beyond which you'll soon find a footbridge.

8. Cross the bridge and turn left onto the riverside path. Continue beside the river

HOROSCOPES

Horoscopes STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH: SAGITTARIUS

SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV - 21ST DEC On the surface everything looks to be going your way this Christmas. You should expect a full house— with (far) too much money being spent on the festive season — but what the hell, you’ve got it and you’ve got to spend it on something! Beneath the surface however, there are a few doubts and misgivings when you look to the future. Sagittarians like guarantees, but sadly there are no

14

guarantees in these lives of ours… Nevertheless, if you are looking for reassurance from lovers and partners, it should be there for you in abundance.

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN In just about every aspect of your life, you’re the boss and you’re in charge. As long as you recognise and appreciate this fact — all will be well. The problems will come about when you sit back and expect leadership from others. You

James Christie

can look forward to a very special Christmas, made by one special (and very expensive) gift that represents the achievement of a long held ambition.

AQUARIUS 2O JAN - 18 FEB December will see a lot of ideas and demands pushed forward by other people. You really need to use your own judgement wisely — as to which you can accept and which you cannot. Aquarians are not usually renowned for their stubbornness, but this December your stubborn streak will emerge. Christmas will be routine and predictable, and highly enjoyable… but there are times when you’ll be dwelling on what comes after Christmas… TH

STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH:

TH

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR This is set to be a bad month for anyone that’s done you wrong in the past, as the tables are set to turn. We’re not necessarily talking about revenge or anything — rather knowing that some justice has been done will give you a feeling of satisfaction. Christmas will be nice and low-key. Pleasure is taken from simple things and the company of good and true friends, both inside the family and out. A party on the

26th or 27th could be an absolute riot and the post Christmas period could be more enjoyable than Christmas itself.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR

Perhaps to your own surprise this is quite a good money month. If you’ve never bought a lottery ticket in your life, this might be the time! The beginning of the month will be nice and social however the tension will begin to build up as Christmas draws closer. You’ll become deeply involved in other peoples’ problems, which might disrupt routines and put you in places where you do not want to be.

TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY

As we draw towards the end of the year it’s time to allow for the death of the old to make way for the birth of the new. This energy coalesces through just about every aspect of your life. Christmas will be relatively quiet and probably a very special and happy one. It looks like being quite a ‘wet’ Christmas… Champagne instead of Prosecco or Cava!

GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN

A bit like your Taurean neighbour, it’s a case of giving up the old to

CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL

Christmas is not always the best time of the year for Cancerians, so you will have quite a busy month on the work scene with some obvious financial rewards and bonuses. An okay Christmas but only if you keep your thoughts to yourself and avoid any ‘heavy’ conversations.

LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG Gentlemen of the sign will do well in all affairs of the heart, while Leo women should be very pleased with the attention they get over the Christmas period, especially the period immediately after Christmas. Not a bad money month and quite a good few weeks for building bridges within family relationships. VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT

This Christmas should be a happy enough time, even though you will

be mentally preoccupied with other things. Take time for reflection, planning and looking not just to the near future, but a few years further down the line. There are some new ideas forming which will need further thought and exploration before they can be put into action— you can afford to take your time, so do exactly that.

HOROSCOPES

make way for the new. Perhaps a few sacrifices might have to be made, but you get back substantially more than you give away. It looks like being a fun and rather jolly Christmas! Contact with old friends from many years ago could put the icing on the cake.

LIBRA

A complicated month with a number of mood swings — old ghosts will come back to haunt, and there may be some tension in relationships caused by your inability to share your inner feelings. Over what promises to be a boozy and boisterous Christmas, you’ll be very much inclined to take your neck off the block and let your hair down.

SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV

So many things and so many people, so many duties and obligations… all get in the way of you doing what you want to do, and being the person you want to be. I know it’s distressing, but bide your time, for although there are changes ahead which are destined to make you feel happier, those times are not yet come.

YORK LIFE

A Christmas Message FROM THE ARCHBISHOP OF YORK, STEPHEN COTTRELL

“The First Nowell, the angels did say, was to certain poor shepherds in fields where they lay.” If you were asked to name your favourite Christmas carol, this isn’t going to be the first one that comes to mind. It’s much more likely to be Mariah Carey’s All I want for Christmas is You, or Wham’s Last Christmas. As two of the most played Christmas songs of all time, they're sure to have you humming

along, no matter what you think of them! Singing has always been central to how we celebrate the good news of Christmas — it accompanies our shopping trips, blares from the speakers at Christmas Markets and lights up the traditional carol services that people will be attending in churches big and small across our city. Some will feature candles, some donkeys, while some will be enjoying minced pies and mulled wine, but all will be singing loudly!

This year, the Church of England are inviting people in singing groups, choirs and schools to join in by singing ‘The First Nowell’. This is a great way to tell the Christmas story — by once again sharing the good news of the birth of Jesus. "In Luke’s telling of the Christmas story, we read that The shepherds went back, singing praises to God for all they had heard and seen; it had been just as the angel had told them." (Luke 2:20 GNB) In the story of the first Christmas, the shepherds are astonished to find the night sky filled with countless voices singing God’s praise. Amazed as they are, the shepherds take up the angel’s invitation and hurry to Bethlehem. It isn’t long before the shepherds are singing too, praising God and sharing the good news of Jesus’ birth. It’s important that we add our voices to this timeless song — in our different places and different ways. Whichever song you choose, I encourage you to sing loudly and boldly! Sing with joy! Sing with others!

Christmas is a time for being together — at this time when there is so much disruption, devastation and cruelty in the world, we need to remember to pause, to listen to the angels’ song of peace and joy and hope because our lives are linked to those around us, near and far. This is the message that I am going to be talking about this Christmas — by remembering the message the angels told to the shepherds that first Christmas, I am going to try to do little things that make peace a reality for those around me. We all need a little bit of kindness, a little bit of peace, and a little bit of joy. And this begins with us. Each one of us, where we are, can do little things that can make a difference for someone else. So join in with the song this Christmas! Find a church near you where you can add your voice to the song that will echo through the centuries. But also join in the song by doing little things (or big things!) for someone else, that will make their life a little brighter.

MOTORS & GADGETS

MAKE SURE YOUR VEHICLE IS WINTER READY 3 TOP TIPS

December is here, which means— even though we may not have seen the worst of it quite yet— freezing temperatures are well on their way! A breakdown is the last thing you want to deal with just before setting off on the exciting drive home for Christmas. We've got you covered with everything you need, to remain firmly in the driver’s seat no matter what the weather throws your way. TYRES When it comes to staying safe on the roads —there’s nothing as important as keeping a close eye on your tyres. Never set off on a long journey without checking tyre-pressure and filling up if neccesary. Low pressure dangerously affects braking distances and makes a car harder to steer which is only exacerbated by the crazy temperature swings we see in the winter. BATTERY Another area you can’t afford to overlook is your car battery. The AA say that battery faults

are the most common cause of breakdowns in the UK! The key to keeping it under control is super simple— just start your engine as regularly a you can and if it’s around or below freezing, start it daily. AIR-CONDITIONING You might think that working air-conditioning is the least of your worries during a winter in Yorkshire, but it's actually an essential part of the windscreen demisting process— without which you wouldn’t be able to see a thing! As the weather gets colder, your windows are more likely to fog up, so unless you want to spend your mornings wiping down your windshield manually, it is important to keep your air conditioning system in good working order. If you do come across any problems that you can’t sort out, make sure to read over the adverts on these pages as the garages that advertise with us are sure to offer you the best service around.

12 York Valkyrie players sign historic new contracts

York City F.C December Report Despite their continued struggle to properly escape the threat of relegation, last month’s discourse regarding York City F.C has been dominated by an off-the-pitch proposal from the club’s majority owners. Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla made a proposal to the Club’s Supporters Trust to increase their shareholding to 75% by buying a further 24% worth of B-shares from the Trust. A spokesperson for the Supporters Trust said that the proposal “has the potential to bring substantial benefits to our beloved club while further strengthening the Trust’s rights & protections.” The Uggla’s bought former Chairman Glen Henderson’s shares back in June, and have since helped the club sign star striker Dipo Akinyemi in the summer and more recently former Braintree Town forward Will Davies, amongst a host of other players. It is expected that increasing the Uggla’s shareholding will modernise the club which will in turn help drag York further up the table and up the divisions in years to come. The Supporters Trust statement outlined “the proposed sale of the 24% stake will not

By Your Local Link Staff Writer Sammi Minion

alter the principle of rights held by the Supporters’ Trust in the club's articles.” Since only B-shares rather than the more significant A-shares have been requested, a potential sale would not limit the Trust’s role in working as a representative voice for the community. No changes will be made until after a Special General Meeting on the 30th of November, where Supporters will vote on the proposal. On the pitch, the Minstermen now sit in 19th place in the table — an away victory over FC Fylde on the 11th of November was considered by many to be the strongest performant of manager Neal Ardley’s tenure. The gradual upturn in fortunes suggests that York should finish 2023 well on the path to safety and stability in the New Year. A large group of York Valkyrie players have followed Sinead Peach, Tara Jane Stanley and Liv Wood in signing professional contracts with a guaranteed salary. Tamzin Renouf, Emma Kershaw, Liv Gale, Jas Bell, Lacey Owen, Savannah Andrade, Rhiannion Marshall, Georgie Hetherington and Jess Sharp have now joined the trio in committing their futures to York. As reported last month, the Valkyrie’s Grand Final victory over Leeds Rhinos was of huge significance because it was played out between the only two clubs in Europe to pay their players. These new contracts take that commitment one step further — they include base salaries, a range of performancerelated bonuses as well as provisions for maternity leave. It affirms York RLFC’s willingness to back up the rapid growth of the women’s game with real support. York RLFC Chairman Clint Goodchild said: “No one can question

the commitment of the players last year, having taken steps to start paying the players. This is a significant step forward from that to where the figures become comparable to some Betfred League One contracts and, in some cases, Betfred Championship contracts. I think that we're seeing really positive trends in women's sports and rugby league is part of that. I think that this is just the tip of the iceberg of what is still to come.” On signing her contract earlier in the month, Captain Sinead Peach added: “What an exciting day this has been for us. If you told me that this moment would come when I was a little girl, I would have laughed at you! “Little kids looking up to us can see that this sport is progressing.” Follow the latest updates on York’s Rugby teams at www. yourlocallink.co.uk

DECEM BER

in the garden

With December well and truly upon us, getting out in the garden isn’t quite the fun pastime it was a couple of months ago — however there’s still a few essential tasks you can’t afford to compromise on in order to keep your garden in good shape in time for the Spring. Essential Maintenance Freezing temperatures can prove a huge danger to your watering equipment, as the water freezes they can split. Bring them inside as soon as you notice the weather drop. You should protect

terracotta pots from cracking by wrapping them up in bubble wrap. Pruning your Trees Pruning — cutting off or cutting back parts of a tree to encourage future fruitful growth — can’t be ignored in the winter time. Woody plants in particular will bleed if you leave their pruning too late — the key is to shape them gently and regularly rather than cut too deeply. For more in-depth gardening advice head to www.gardenersworld.com.

Friends of Rowntree Park win national award A project to make more girls feel welcome in York’s Rowntree Park was chosen as one of ten parks —out of 2,000 across the country— to win one of Green Flag’s “Best of the Best” awards. Make Space for Girls in Rowntree Park was launched in 2021 to reverse the drop off of in park use as girls get older. The project’s success in encouraging more than 250 10-to-18 year olds into the park to attend their programme of free events, made it the obvious choice for the UK’s ‘Best initiative to engage and increase use of parks by women and girls’ award.

Project lead Abigail Gaines said, "Winning the award is amazing but the real joy comes in seeing the mass increase of teen girls who were in the park this summer involved in the events and activities. Seeing them try new things, meeting new people, watching their confidence grow, and creating a community was just a fantastic thing. We are looking for funding to run again in 2024." To read more about the impact of the changes at Rowntree Park, head to www. rowntreepark.org.uk/makespace-for-girls.

PLANTING FRUIT TREES PART 2 PART 3 COMING NEXT MONTH! You may remember that last month we took a look at the what, where and when for planting fruit trees. This time we’ll dig a little deeper and consider the various forms of fruit trees that can be grown, alongside the vital question of how to ensure trees stay a suitable size for the space you’ve got available. Let’s start with the ‘form’ of tree. It’s important to bear in mind that most orchard fruit — or ’top’ fruit in horticultural speak—don't have to be grown as a conventional ‘trees’ with a trunk and branches. Trees often do work best, especially when there’s a reasonable amount of room, but pruning and picking may still be a challenge. Where space is limited the best option can be a ‘bush.’ These are actually trees that are kept small to no more than two or three metres in height, with a squat trunk and short branches that radiate outwards. The ideal shape is often said to be that of a stubby wine glass with an open centre that aids light penetration. However, pruning to keep a bush open-centred is not always easy, so it’s worth considering other forms. This is especially true for pears which tend to be upright and difficult to maintain as a bush when young. The other most suitable forms for garden use are cordon, espalier and

fan. A cordon is best described as a small tree, usually trained as a single stem— although double or triple stemmed types are possible— with short side branches along most of its length on which fruit is borne. Cordons are often cultivated at a 45 degree angle to restrict vigour and are suitable for apples and pears but not for plums which are more difficult to restrain. It is possible to plant at a very close spacing, usually in rows supported on a framework. This means more varieties can be squeezed in than would be possible with bush trees. Espaliers and fans need more room and are a good option where walls or fences are available. Both are trained so that the branches grow flat rather than billow out. Espaliers are suitable for apples and pears only while fans work for all top fruit, including plums. The main difference is that espaliers should have branches in evenly spaced tiers while the aim with a fan is to have multiple branches spreading from a short trunk in a ‘fan’ shape. Trees in these shapes can be purchased ready-formed but this tends to be an expensive option. An alternative is to buy baby trees (maidens) and train them; it’s less complex than you might think. Once mature, trees in these forms are pruned in late summer. Again, this

BY G A R DE NING E X P ERT

Tony Chalcraft

is not as difficult as might be supposed. To help ensure fruit trees don’t outgrow their allotted space it’s important to buy them with an appropriate rootstock. Nearly all fruit trees are not grown on their own roots. Instead they are grafted — that is a twig (technically the scion) of a particular variety is joined to a rooted stem (rootstock) of another tree— the purpose of this is to control the tree's vigour. Rootstocks have been developed to control the height and spread of fruit trees as most types and varieties would grow into large trees if they were cultivated on their own roots. This is where it begins to get complex. Apples, for instance, are usually on rootstocks prefixed with an M, for example, M9, M25, M26, M27, etc. so that they sound a bit like motorways. Confusingly, there’s

no logical sequence to the numbering: for example, M9 is weaker than M26, but M25 is the most vigorous, while M27 will give the smallest tree of all. The best advice I can give here is to use the Web for further information but, most of all, never buy a fruit tree without knowing the rootstock onto which it’s grafted. Next month we’ll end our overview of fruit tree planting with a short summary on choosing varieties and a few words on how to put trees in the ground.

The Special Care Baby Unit had more to celebrate on Saturday the 6th of May than just the coronation of King Charles III. At 6:05pm Betsy Maeve Wadsworth, alongside 11 others throughout the day, was born at York Hospital. In fitting style, instead of hats the babies were gifted knitted crowns by their midwife Sue Cowley and a vest designed by Sue’s daughter, Iona. Betsy’s mum Katie said, “We received the most wonderful gift bag containing a coronation baby vest, a gorgeous hand-knitted hat, some coronation socks, and chocolates. What an amazing treat from York’s maternity unit.” Unlike King Charles’ purely ceremonial crown, these knitted crowns provide a truly vital service. For the first 24 hours of their lives, some babies can struggle to regulate their body temperature— the knitted crowns prevented their temperatures from ever getting too low.

One of the first babies to be born and nursed back to health in the York Special Care Baby Unit has just celebrated his 40th Birthday. Jamie Collins weighed only 1lb 9oz (the same amount as a bag of sugar) when he was born 14-weeks early in the autumn of 1983. In the years since, Jamie has built a successful decade-long career in the NHS. He now works just around the corner as a Medical Secretary in the Trust’s dermatology department In order to give back to the life-changing help he received, Jamie fundraised more than £800s worth of donations from well-wishers at his 40th birthday celebrations. He said: “I wanted to give back to SCBU as they did so much for me 40 years ago, without them, I would not be here.” Reflecting on the occasion, mum June Collins explained: “It’s been very emotional looking back through old photos. If anyone remembers Jamie, I would like to let them know how well he has done and thank them for all they did.” On accepting the donation, neo-natal support worker Anita Brown thanked Jamie for his generosity and wished him well for his fortieth year. “It is just so wonderful to know Jamie and his family were helped all those years ago at SCBU.”

Whilst the rest of the city are putting their feet up this Christmas, the heroic staff at York Hospital’s Children’s Ward and Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) —who provide specialist care for premature and sick newborn babies— will be working tirelessly to bring joy to all their little patients and the families who aren’t quite as fortunate. In the last year they’ve celebrated landmark anniversaries, launched ground-breaking new software and won multiple awards. To celebrate their achievements and to look forward to their inspirational work over the festive period, in this December issue of Your Local Link we caught up with their incredible staff to deep-dive into everything SCBU.

Improvements across the board The hospital’s Play Team — a team of specialists who provide therapeutic play that helps children understand, cope with and explore their feelings about their illness and treatment— have seen a number of creative new initiatives find success. This year they implemented a new playpassport system for children with special educational needs. This allows staff to gain a better understanding of their likes and dislikes whilst in hospital. It is hoped the ‘neuro-diverse passport’ will help them get to know children better, which in turn will make their treatment work more effective for other hospital departments, such as in the Day Unit and the MRI department. By calming them down beforehand, far fewer children need to be put under anaesthetic before having an MRI scan. Staff recently hosted a packed programme of activities to celebrate ‘Play in Hospital Week’ The highlights were when Children were treated to a visit from their favourite on-screen icons and when a local artist visited the hospital for colour therapy during a day titled ‘Calm, Body and Mind’. Leanne Haycock, Play Specialist Team

Babies Ward introduce

revolutionary new software Leader, said: “Play certainly aids recovery and in developing the new play-passport we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to make sure every child is cared for in a way that is suitable to their needs. We need to remember; that every child is different, and they all have different fears or phobias. It’s a great positive step for the team which keeps expanding to keep up with demand.” The team already create thousands of pounds of savings for the hospital’s MRI department by calming children down before having an MRI so that children are only put under anaesthetic when absolutely necessary. The Play Team continue to free up hospital resources whilst simultaneously making the children on the ward feel safer and more comfortable.

May of 2023 saw the first births ever to be recorded on BadgerNet, a groundbreaking paperless software. The software has created the first ever virtual system for midwives to register their maternity notes— the notes they take during appointments over the course of a pregnancy— replacing the old-fashioned method of using green paper to take those notes. By moving into a virtual system, each baby and mother’s pregnancy record is immediately available for midwives, healthcare assistants, admin teams, consultants, and sonographers and is almost completely immune to human error since staff no longer need to double enter data. It comes with a corresponding app for patients where they can access any information recommended by their midwife, view booked appointments, write a personal diary, and add photos at the simple press of a button— all from the comfort of their home. Jo Holleran, Digital Midwife, said “Not only is it better for patients, but it has also made a huge difference to our own staff — being able to log blood pressure or pulse oximetry readings is useful. It also saves so much time, midwives do not have to double enter data onto paper handheld notes as well as an internal system. We can also see feedback regarding antenatal care, labour, and birth experiences which is invaluable.”

Positive changes promote progress at the Trust’s breastfeeding clinics

York’s breastfeeding clinics have seen an improvement in services this summer, making strides forward in improving patient experience, especially for infants born with tongue tie. In 2023 the hospital introduced a new Maternity Support Worker and created an independent clinical room for breastfeeding— these changes worked together to improve patient experience, created extra appointments, and reduced waiting times. One of the most experienced tongue tie practitioners in the region, Sara Harrison, is now training other healthcare workers in the tongue tie division procedure and has started to qualify as a lactation

consultant. Julie Stones who is one of the already qulaified lactataion consultants said, “Sara is an asset and it’s exciting she has begun her training. This is significant progress towards my goal of ensuring most women referred to the clinic are seen by a consultant.” The next big step for the weekly breastfeeding clinic is to provide a tongue tie division service at Scarborough Hospital. Julie added: “We are really committed to reducing healthcare inequalities and we’re expecting we’ll be able to provide a clinic in 2024 avoiding the inconvenience of travelling to York.”

Christmas Magic

Every year, staff on the children’s wards at the York and Scarborough hospitals work hard to make all the necessary care arrangements so that patients can go home to their families for Christmas. However, for some patients, this is just not possible because they are too unwell. For these patients, staff do all they can to make the children’s wards feel less like hospital for the day and try to give them as close to the Christmas they would have had at home as possible. All the young patients who need to stay in the hospital this Christmas deserve to experience as much joy as any child. You can help the incredible staff bring some Christmas magic to the wards by giving the gift of joy to patients. This includes a special visit from Santa in the run-up to

Christmas, and a wonderful Christmas party to give patients and their families time to celebrate. The Play Team even organise gifts for each child on the ward, to help make the day extra special. A gift of £20 could buy a present for a child who is too unwell to spend Christmas at home with their family. To donate, scan the QR code or go to www.bit.ly/yschristmasmagic Please note, that the charity cannot accept donated items due to infection control guidance, but a donation of £20 will go a long way to making this Christmas special for a child who is spending it in hospital.

YOUR FAMILY & YOU

Learn if Tang Hall Primary is the School for you

Should making a will be a New Year’s priority? A will-writing specialist service in York are recommending that residents make organising their Will and putting a Power of Attorney in place a priority. While it may not be at the top of most traditional lists of jobs for the New Year— it’s never too early to make these important documents, however it can be left too late. A Lasting Power of Attorney enables you to appoint people you trust to be your voice and have the practical powers they need to be able to help and make decisions for you— in the event you become unable to do so. Denise Crispin-Bailey of York’s Richardson's Wills says,

“If you don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place, your family will need to obtain permission to act for you from the Court of Protection. This can be a very stressful and expensive process that can take several months and cost thousands of pounds in legal and medical fees. In the meantime, your family will be stuck and unable to assist you.” For more information and advice on getting started or anything else, contact Denise on 01904 501910 or email denise@richardsonswills.co.uk.

There’s still time to attend the last of Tang Hall Primary School’s open events on Monday the 11th of December from 5pm. Even though there’s still plenty of time before September 2024, it is never too early to start preparing for the important decision of choosing a primary school for your child — nothing you read online compares to seeing the school for yourself. In this way, the open event is a genuinely

unique chance to hear firsthand from the headteacher and teaching staff about where your little one will fit in at the school. If you can’t make it on the day call up on 01904 806515 and the school will arrange a private visit for you.

SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS AT CERAMIC FAIR The work of more than 20 ceramics artists will be on display and available to buy at Southlands Methodist Church this December the 9th. Unlike previous larger scale events, the fair will exclusively showcase the work of artists from York and the surrounding areas. Organiser Sylvia Schroer says “There's nothing for local ceramicists so we wanted to do something to support the local pottery community in York.” Alongside the pottery on sale at the fair, there will also be a silent auction where more unique ceramic items will be available to purchase— all proceeds from the auction will go towards the charity Refugee Action York.

Darley Funeral Directors

Sylvia has called the event ‘Falling in Love with Clay’ and says “my hope is that it just sort of brings people together to inspire and support each each other.” The Fair starts at 11am on Saturday the 9th of December, email yorkpottersfair@ gmail.com for more information.

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR DODGY DOG DEALERS THIS CHRISTMAS While the old cliché goes that a dog is for life not just for Christmas — with rogue dog breeders attempting to take over the market — there are more important checks to be done (other than establishing if you’ve got time to look after your pooch) before buying this Christmas. The rise in demand for puppies has massively inflated prices, some popular breeds now sell for thousands. This spike has led to an increase in puppy farming, where puppies are bred in squalid conditions and put at high risk of illness. A recent report from The Kennel Club found that more than 22% of dogs bought in Yorkshire are suspected to have originated on a puppy farm— a clear indication that buyers are overlooking red flags in order to secure the puppy of their dreams. A spokesperson for The Kennel Club said, “Scammers and puppy farmers are clever and will do what they can to disguise their cruel trade so it’s important to be extremely vigilant. Puppy buyers should make sure they’re asking the right

questions, see the puppy, with their mum and in their home environment, and step back if things don't feel right.” It’s important to remember that the wellbeing of your future pet has to take priority over a bargain buy— you’ll only end up paying for it in future vet fees. If prices do seem too high, it might be worth considering rescuing a pet from a reputable charity like the Dog’s Trust before being drawn into an online scam. To help make the right decision, the Kennel Club have launched a special set of ‘Be Puppywise’ guidelines. Head to thekennelclub.org.uk/bepuppywise. For more responsible puppy-buying advice and practical resources.

He may be a decade old, but don't let that fool you – Stinky's playful side still shines through— proving he's still got some kitten spirit left. If you're looking for a feline friend as winter blankets the world in white, Stinky Gumbo is the cat for you— you'll find him perched by the window, gazing outside, pondering the mysteries of the universe or plotting his next grand adventure. Rusty Tidwell, Male, 6yrs Poor Rusty came to us from a multi-cat household where conflicts were more than frequent as the cats had no access to outdoor space. Despite trying everything they could to help their cats cope, the owners ultimately decided that there was no other option than to change their environment. When Rusty first arrived, he was a real bag of nerves —but after just a couple of weeks the little man is now chatting to us daily (and coming out for lots of head scratches and attention). All Rusty Tidwell needs is some kind and gentle folk to come along and give him that second chance at the tranquil home environment he deserves. As 2023 draws to a close, rather than looking back on the year gone by— the most exciting way to spend the next few weeks is by planning ahead to properly end 2023 with a bang. New York City is one of the most popular places to see in the start of a New Year. Whether you’d prefer to stand in Times Square waiting for the ball to drop, or attend the New Year's party at the Marriott Marquis— magic is guaranteed. Families can even head to Applebee's where you can enjoy a buffet dinner before heading to the viewing point just before midnight. If you’re looking at getting away from the crowds, take the subway to Brooklyn and make your way to Prospect Park to see 2024 explode into view against the Manhattan skyline. Funchal, the capital of the Portuguese Island of Madeira is known for having one of the best firework displays in Europe. Many

cruise lines plan their Atlantic Coast festive cruises to arrive at the port just in time to view the fireworks from the ocean overlooking Funchal. If you prefer a landbased holiday — hotels around the harbour make a perfect base to celebrate the coming year. The Vine Hotel in Funchal is one to consider with a rooftop dining experience— perfect for after dinner drinks overlooking the harbour. Kitzbuhel, Austria — Spend your days skiing on a wide range of trails or relaxing in a hotel spa for the day. Then in the evening, head out to the Schwarzsee torch circuit, watch the local street artists in downtown Kitzbuhel from mid afternoon or relax by a cosy fire. On New Year's day see live music at the Kitzbühel Stadtmusik, take in a fire & light show or enjoy the annual New Year Mass at the local Parish church. Sydney, Australia is one of the most iconic settings for New Year's

celebrations and one of the first places in the world to welcome a New Year. Choose from an evening harbour cruise — to be at the centre of celebrations with dinner in the Sydney Opera House— or choose to stay at a hotel with a harbour view. The Shangri-La Sydney & Four Seasons are perfectly positioned and offer dining experiences that are available to pre-book. For something a little closer to home, simply take the train to London and enjoy a couple of nights in the capital. Spend the day shopping and taking in the sights or even enjoy a traditional afternoon tea. On New Year's eve head to the West End and catch a show before a steady walk through the city watching fireworks over the Thames and listening to Big Ben marking midnight. Luxury Sunday Lunch at The Old Liquor Store

Gorgonzola Dolce, Radicchio and fresh pear probably aren’t the first things that come to mind when you mention Sunday Lunch, what their inclusion on the menu do make clear however, is that a roast from the Old Liquor Store on Bishopthorpe Road is no ordinary Sunday Lunch. The Old Liquor Store is an Italianinfluenced restaurant situated at the epicentre of York’s culinary history — inside the old Terry’s Chocolate Works, the factory that employed more than 300 people to produce countless chocolate bars across the best part of the 20th Century. That history is evident from the moment we were led to our table, from the historic steps and ancient tiles— that have been cleaned and restored but not replaced since the 1920s —to the photos on the surrounding walls that depict stories of the factory workers and their families from across the last century, all the way up to a menu that respectfully indulges in the very best flavours from our city’s legacy. We ordered three courses in the end (for only £36!) starting with the

Bresaola Punta D'anca gorgonzola dolce radicchio, with fresh pear and toasted Hazelnuts, a shaved pear and cheese salad. A perfect combination of sweet, rich and light flavours that perfectly introduced our taste buds in time for the luxurious main course to come. A roast sirloin of Yorkshire reared beef, accompanied with Yorkshire pudding, barolo and veal bone gravy, cauliflower cheese and roasted carrots. The plate is a melting pot of flavour — where the beef is the obvious star event but the gravy deserves equal plaudits for how it ties everything together. Finally we made our way onto dessert. The Terry’s Chocolate Sundae was an obvious choice. The ice cream is adorned with chunks of brownies and candied orange cubes — to tastefully pay homage to the history of the building. The Sunday Lunch offering at Old Liquor Store is the perfect meal to complete any weekend in York, at one of its most iconic locations. The Old Liquor Store located on Bishopthorpe Road, call up on 01904 950147 to book your seat.
