WALKING WITH
THE WANDERER
Huggate West Walk
Huggate is a popular Wolds walking hub. This route heads west from the village across quiet field paths, valley rim pastures, and an old bridleway. The landscape is typical of the high Wolds and has the added bonus of far-reaching views to the east and south.
Is This Walk For Me?
For a Wolds walk this is relatively flat. There are a few ups and downs but only one slope— a short descent near the start— is steep. There are no stiles and only one section of road walking, near the end on a quiet stretch. Mud may be encountered at this time of year so some paths can be slippery. Farm animals graze in some of the valley pastures. Route finding should be easy as waymarks are good throughout.
Getting There
The starting point is the free carpark on the eastern edge of Huggate, off Driffield Road just beyond the Wolds Inn. Huggate is 20 miles from York following the A166 through Stamford Bridge and turning off after Garrowby Hill at the Wayrham picnic area. Unfortunately, there are no public transport options for this walk.
Refreshments
The Wolds Inn, near the start point, offers bar and restaurant food as well as drinks. It is open daily, Wednesday through to Sunday. Rachel’s Walnut Cottage Tea Room in Huggate (turn left at Direction Point 7) provides light refreshments and is open Saturday through to Tuesday 11am-4pm.
What To See
The countryside around Huggate offers archetypal high Wolds scenery. The higher farmed land is split by deep dry valleys flanked by steep grassy slopes. Large farms, often clothed by shelter belts, and a few woods dot the landscape. From the high ground, there are extensive views east and south, as well as down into the deep valleys, especially Pasture Dale at Direction Point 4. Huggate is a quiet village off the beaten track. Its old well is said to have been one of the deepest in the country.

Huggate West Walk Time: 2 1/2 hours Distance: 5 1/2 miles
1. Turn right out of the carpark. In a
few metres ignore the public footpath right, but about 20 metres beyond it take the alternative permissive path going through a kissing gate. Quickly pass through another gate then head half-left across the hummocky field on a sketchy grass path towards a third gate. After passing through the gate, take the lane slightly to the left to walk over the green (with a seat and goalposts left). Once you reach the road, turn right and head downhill, passing the church to the right.
2. After the last house on the left, take the signed path going halfleft across the sloping field, soon descending steeply to a gate in the far-left corner. Turn left on the fenced track. Where this curves right towards a farm, keep ahead on a signed path (initially with a hedge on the right). Continue until this narrow path joins a track coming from the farm. Keep ahead (away from the farm) then at a signed footpath-junction keep left on the track which, in a further 400-metres, reaches a road. 3. Cross straight over the road by
following a field-edge track. Where the hedge on the left ends, turn left (as signed by a grassy path between fields). Remain on this path, which eventually has a sporadic hedge on
the right, to reach a gate at a road junction.
4. Turn right, being sure to take the
further (uppermost) road (signed Wolds Way). In about 150-metres go through a gate on the right and walk alongside trees to the left and a deep valley right. Where the trees end, keep ahead above the valley, soon curving right and gradually descending. Remain above the valley with a fence to your left until you reach the corner of a wood. Here, turn left on an enclosed path with the wood right. At the next gate go right for about 100-metres alongside the wood to reach a further gate.
5. Do not go ahead here but instead
turn sharp left to follow a faint grassy path (this is open access land so there is no footpath sign) close to the fence on the left. Continue, soon with gorse bushes and the deep valley right, until a wooden gate is visible ahead. Do not go through this but turn right beside the fence to find a metal gate at a bridleway sign. Go through and take the path left following power lines. Keep going ahead to reach an isolated house at a road.
6. Cross the road and take the signed
bridleway opposite. Now continue on this path, ignoring all ways off. Initially
YORK LIFE
there’s a deep valley on the right and later a young plantation at the head of a further deep valley. After nearly 2,000 metres, the bridleway reaches a road.
Free printable map on ou r website!
7. Turn left on the road, which
soon becomes tree lined, for about 1,000 metres until you reach the staggered crossroads at the centre of Huggate. Turn right (left if visiting Rachel’s Tearoom), soon passing the Wolds Inn, to return to the carpark..

HOROSCOPES
Horoscopes STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH: AQUARIUS
BY AST RO LO G IST
James Christie
let the world skim over the top of your head and not be too bothered about anything… Other people, especially those closest to you, will find this frustrating, but you should find your own path forward. Tell them to follow theirs.
TAURUS 20TH APR – 20TH MAY
AQUARIUS 2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB February looks like a very successful month for the vast majority of Aquarians, with gains made in both the financial and personal aspects of your life. Important ambitions are either achieved or are brought a big PISCES 19TH FEB – 20TH MAR
Not the easiest of months as other peoples’ problems become something of an issue for you. Nevertheless, you fight your way forwards and find an inner strength you never knew you had. Some plans get changed at the last minute (especially between the 11th and the 20th) and although you might find this annoying it seems
step closer, and there is a lovely feeling of financial security. On the downside, a partner might not like your priorities, but they can’t complain too much if it is you who is bringing home the bacon week after month after year. to me that someone is doing you a favour. Some advantageous links with bureaucracy towards the very end of the month.
ARIES 21ST MAR – 19TH APR
Okay, so Christmas and New Year celebrations are behind you and now it’s time to get your teeth into 2024 – Except that you’re not really in the mood. You’re happy to
01904 438799 07947 144681
No real drama or trauma in February, although there may be a couple of uncomfortable appointments on the 21st and 26th. Maybe quite a lot of money being spent on essentials, which may be financially inconvenient but isn’t exactly threatening. Builder’s bills, new cookers or fridges, the brakes on the car… A nice month for all things of a romantic nature, an interesting reunion towards month’s end, and probably a very expensive night out on the 14th!
GEMINI 21ST MAY – 20TH JUN
Gentlemen of the sign enjoy a renaissance of all things romantic and emotional. If you’re single and solitary, then those days may soon be over! Gemini girls, especially the career girls among you, can expect to have a very successful month on the work scene, with some notable improvement to finances before month’s end.
CANCER 21ST JUN – 22ND JUL
Old ideas (and commitments) get in the way of future plans and ambitions, and therefore, not without some hesitation, you’ll be dumping a lot of the old to make way for the new –this is an energy which seems to sweep across the board. You walk away from failing relationships and boring jobs while that knackered old car that keeps breaking down is on its way to the scrap yard. If adult children are acting like spoiled brats, you’ll be inclined to read the riot act, and maybe not before time!
LEO 23RD JUL – 22ND AUG An excellent month for both sexes when it comes to money and opportunities for job/career advancement… And especially so for single females under 35! Anyone who is into sports should have a rewarding few weeks and there could be a major social event on the 9th or the 19th. Money spent on new clothes and personal appearance should be seen as an investment rather than a luxury, and this is particularly true for the guys. Flight plans are being made for later in the year.

Maximise your space! We build to your specification. Made to Measure • Competitive Sensible Prices
A rewarding, but in some ways difficult month. You’ll constantly be juggling priorities, your personal life getting in the way of work commitments and vice versa. Lovers, workmates, and colleagues don’t help very much because they’re too busy sorting out their own responsibilities. Against all this, it’s a good month on the work scene and there should be a welcome boost to your income – even if you’ve got to work to get it.
LIBRA 23RD SEPT – 22ND OCT The 7th, 14th, and 21st are delicious days for romantic opportunities (and will be a major boost to your levels of personal popularity and selfconfidence). Okay, jobs and careers may be important, but this month there are many distractions, and if I were you, I’d allow myself to be distracted. Life is not all about work, it’s also about having fun, and you’re long overdue for a dose of fun. SCORPIO 23RD OCT – 21ST NOV
February is one of those months where you’re going to have to fight for everything you get. There should be nothing new about this, however your temper is on a shorter fuse, and on more than one occasion you’ll
be speaking your mind. This will cause a few raised eyebrows, but if it alters other people’s perceptions of you, it is worth your while. Expect some awkward decision around the 10th or 11th and a journey of some importance around the 21st.
SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV – 21ST DEC
HOROSCOPES
VIRGO 23RD AUG – 22ND SEPT
In many respects this is a very family orientated month and, even if you were to say that you didn’t have a family, there is still the family of friends and colleagues. A journey (probably in a southerly direction) looks likely mid-month, which ties in with a reunion and a lot of money being spent on leisure and pleasure pursuits. Some quiet concerns about a partner’s spending, but this is not the time to raise them or make an issue of them, especially if you’re in your later or middle years,
CAPRICORN 22ND DEC – 19TH JAN
Probably a very busy month on the work scene where you’ll have to do someone else’s job as well as your own, but there will be worthwhile rewards so don’t back away from challenges – rather see them as opportunities. A stable month emotionally with a specific ‘high’ on the 14th (but I’m glad I’m not paying that restaurant bill!).

MOTORS & GADGETS
NISSAN JUKE HYBRID BY MOTOR I N G EX PERT TI M SAU N D E R S I’m a great fan of hybrids. So, naturally I like the Nissan Juke SUV. What I particularly like about this hybrid is that it will drive a good mile in EV mode at 30mph. I find myself increasingly forced to drive at this speed or below either due to sheer weight of traffic or by being in such a zone. Inside it’s comfy. We like the supportive seats and the hint of suede around the black leather – there’s luxurious suede on the dash, too. At night a strip of light projects from behind the
inside of the door panel, which provides a futuristic touch. There’s air conditioning and a great radio with Bose speakers built into the edge of the front seats, which I haven’t seen before. That radio allows us to listen to our favourite ‘80s music station. Ah, now there was a period when some great things happened.
LAST CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR SAY ON CHANGES TO TRANSPORT IN THE CITY Our Big Transport Conversation — the City of York Council’s largest consultation with residents on planned changes to York’s transport since 2010— closes on the 4th of February. The results of the consultation will be used to form a new Local Transport Plan that will reshape York’s transport network along 10 different policy areas. These include goals to improve wheelchair accessibility and reduce car dependency, alongside wider targets to safeguard the local environment.
This means that the next couple of weeks are the last opportunity for all residents — anyone who buses, walks, wheels, drives, or parks anywhere in York or the surrounding villages— to have a say. To make your voice heard, all you need to do is fill out an online survey at ourbigconversation.york.gov.uk or simply email your thoughts to ourbigconversation@york. gov.uk. February Report
By Your Local Link Staff Writer Sammi Minion
On the pitch the Minstermen have continued their upturn in fortunes under manager Neal Ardley. Now five games unbeaten (at time of publication) York City are 18th in the table with a three-point buffer away from Ebbsfleet United and the relegation zone. They might have found themsleves far better off if not for an incredible turn of events during City’s home fixture against the Kentbased side on Saturday the 23rd of December. An early opening goal from Lenell “The Shop” John-Lewis looked to have set City well on their way to all three points — this was until deep into injury time, when Ebbsfleet goalkeeper Mark Cousins struck home from a corner to bring the visitors within a point of York.
Fortunately, in the weeks since, City were able to respond well to that considerable setback, picking up five points from three games including a doubleheader (back-to-back fixtures) against Gateshead, before the draw versus Boreham Wood. The next month will tell the defining story of their season, where City take up against three more relegation threatened sides in Dorking Wanderers, Fylde, and Oxford before a trip to Hartlepool. They will need to fare better than they did against Ebbsfleet if they have any hope of further progressing away from the threat of relegation. Head to www.yourlocallink. co.uk for more of the latest sports updates.
York City supporters call out National League over last-minute TNT fixture change York City supporters call out National League over last-minute TNT fixture change. At the end of December The Vanarama National League announced that the fixture between York City F.C and Boreham Wood would be moved from the 6th of January to the 7th. Giving fans just three weeks notice before the game was scheduled to kick off in North London (185-miles from the LNER Community Stadium). In response, the club’s Supporters Trust issued an open letter to express their “collective concern and disappointment” at a decision that left hundreds of fans out of pocket, having already booked tickets, and unable to attend. The letter went on to describe fans’ distaste at the lack of foresight on behalf of broadcasters and the league, “In the National League's announcement, it was stated that TNT Sports had delivered "an early Christmas present" for supporters. Unfortunately, for York City fans, this is far from a Christmas present, instead it is turning in to ‘The Nightmare of Meadow Park' (Boreham Wood’s ground).” Just three hours after the open letter was made public, the Supporters Trust received backing from Malcom Clarke,
SPORTS
YORK SPORT REPORT The Chair of the Football Supporters’ Association — the national representative body for football supporters in England and Wales. He said, “We fully support the concerns of the York City Supporters about the late change of date for this fixture. “We support the call for the National League, TNT and the rail companies to do something practical to mitigate the effects of this late decision on the travelling York City support”. Then on the 29th of December, City’s opponents Boreham Wood went on to announce that away ticket prices would be cut in half whilst those who had already purchased tickets would receive a 50% refund. The fixture was moved so that it could be broadcast by TNT Sports (formerly known as BT Sport) — increasing exposure for the club and league to a much wider audience — the benefits of which were “understood” in the fans’ letter but not seen as justified by the “the significant burden” imposed by the change. In the end, although City may have gained extra viewers via broadcast, only 367 fans managed to make it to Meadowpark to witness the 1-1 draw— almost 200 fewer than had travelled to Gateshead for City’s preceding away fixture.

NATIONAL APPRENTICESHIP WEEK RETURNS FOR 2024 The annual National Apprenticeship Week is back for its 17th year. Between the 5th and 11th of February, informative events will be held throughout Yorkshire and the rest of England to promote the benefits of apprenticeships for employees and employers alike. Whether you’re leaving school this year, changing careers, or are a current student planning your next move, there are hundreds of apprenticeships to choose from. An often-unrepresented benefit is the positive impact these schemes can have on employers as well as the apprentices themselves. It is in highlighting issues like this that makes the week-long celebration so worthwhile— with events like York College’s Employer Information Breakfast that will set out the advantages businesses get out of hiring apprentices. The theme of this year’s National Apprenticeship Week will be ‘Skills for Life' — reflecting on the twoway dialogue apprenticeships promote. They can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge
required for a rewarding career, and employers to develop a workforce with future ready skills. During the week, there will be hundreds of virtual and inperson events including helpful resources available for students, for more information, or to browse apprenticeship opportunities close to your area, visit www. apprenticeships.gov.uk.

Winter Sales at Todd’s WE HEAR FROM LOCAL EXPERT MATT TODD It’s been very busy in the store this January with the bargain hunters, and customers looking to replace broken products, in equal measure. The sales activity may be coming to an end, but you still have until the end of the month to grab a bargain! After that, don’t forget that we are part of Euronics, Europe’s largest buying group, and we have a price match pledge across our stores. This means that, with the assistance of the manufacturers themselves, you can always get the best prices and the best service that only your local, family run, independent retailer can offer. It’s been interesting to see what the nationals have been up to for January with their marketing on kitchens, with some shouting about HALF PRICE kitchens or even up to 60% off some units. Having had customers bring quotes to us from some of these big brands it’s pretty obvious that the prices haven’t changed that much. More importantly, we can still offer very competitive pricing on better designed and constructed kitchens. If you would like help with designing your next kitchen, please give us a call on 01904 628676 and ask for Caitlin or Rona who will be able to assist you. Finally, if you are looking for something a bit more special or
specific, please come in and have a browse around our Laura Ashley range of kitchens and bedrooms. These stunning designs offer a real touch of class. We have Laura Ashley on display at our Monks Cross Showroom and one of our designers will be very happy to give you the tour around and some ideas of how this iconic brand could work in your home. We’re here if you need us at Herbert Todd House, next to Taco Bell on Monks Cross Drive, at www.htodd. co.uk or on 01904 628676.

Snowdrop Strolls
YORK WINS INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM FOR ITS CONTRIBUTION TO CLIMATE ACTION.
With the trees looking barren and the temperatures closeto freezing, you might fall into the trap of assuming that February isn’t the best time of year to go out into the stunning Yorkshire countryside. However, to think this way is to fail to consider that the first sign of spring has already arrived! On these stunning snowdrop strolls, you’ll get to see 2024’s first flowers in some truly iconic local locations. Here’s our roundup of the top places in and around York to see them in bloom. Burton Agnes, Driffield. A walk across the majestic Elizabethan grounds of Burton Agnes makes for a perfect February day out. You’ll see the thousands of hardy snowdrops that have pushed through the hard winter ground to create a magnificent ‘white carpet’ across the woodland floor. As a reward for braving the cold, make sure to pay a visit to the café before heading home!
Moorlands Woodland Nature Reserve, Moor Lane, York. This enchanting seven-hectare woodland lies just to the North of York near Wigginton. The 1km circuit route that traverses this magical Edwardian garden is coated by a rich carpet of snowdrops at this time of year. Make sure to keep an eye out as you venture along the charming trail for a series of wooden sculptures and a fascinating range of British bird life.
Ray Wood, Castle Howard, York. As seen most recently on Netflix’s Bridgerton, Castle Howard is one of the bestpreserved historical houses in Yorkshire. Between the Temple of Venus and the Temple of the Four Winds, in the grounds and gardens, you’ll find the Ray Wood littered with snowdrops as well as some bright yellow winter aconites!
If you go on a snowdrop stroll don't forget to tag us in your photos on Facebook and Instagram using #YourLocalLink for a chance to be featured on our socials!

The city of York has been named on an elite list — of just 119 cities out of nearly 1000 around the globe— by the non-profit Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for the second year in a row. The CDP rank the cities that demonstrate the highest commitment to “bold leadership on environmental action as well as transparency, despite the pressures of a challenging global economic situation” each year on a scale of D- to A. Because of York’s successful climate action plan and the council’s willingness to disclose of their citywide emissions inventory, they were awarded with a place on the A list — a position that just 13% of CDP ranked cities achieve. The CDP say that A-List cities “report four times as many” climate focused actions than their non-A-list counterparts. This achievement is something that a spokesperson for City of York Council said, “demonstrates that York is a global leader in climate action.” To read about the council’s many climatefocused initiatives head to www.york.gov. uk and for the latest news updates head to www.yourlocallink.co.uk.

WEDDING GARDENING GUIDE
VEG IN BEDS: PROS AND CONS Tony Chalcraft
BY G A R DE NING E X PERT
Cultivating vegetables in beds is a relatively new trend. You might call it a fashion— perhaps prompted by gardening makeover programmes on TV where any vegetables grown are invariably plonked into newly constructed and expensivelooking beds. But the elaborate edifices I’ve come across over the years have appeared more as architectural and artistic wonders, than horticultural necessities. Other beds I’ve seen are far more modest constructions, sometimes no more than a flimsy wooden framework thrown around a patch of soil, but probably just as useful from the growing point of view. All these beds appear to have been built on the basis that veg somehow demands a bed. It’s certainly the case that there are benefits to growing vegetables in beds. In some situations, for example, where there are mobility
FRE OBLIG E NO A QUO TION TES
issues to contend with, a waisthigh bed (a true ‘raised’ bed), may be a necessity. Elevated beds or large containers may also be the only feasible means of growing on land with little or no natural soil. Even beds which are barely raised above ground level, can confer real benefits. These include helping to make heavy or wet soil more workable and demarcating of the cultivated area. If beds are not made too large it is possible to sow, plant, and harvest without walking on the soil. This can reduce the need for digging to break up soil compacted by treading. Indeed, bed growing is often part and parcel of the increasingly popular ‘no-dig’ method of vegetable growing— the guru of which is Charles Dowding (see www.charlesdowding.co.uk to learn more). When coupled with no-dig, growing in beds can have
K&S PAVING Paving Water features Landscaping Walling
beds which were so heaped that crops had to cling to the almost cliff-like sides! Edging is not the only issue. Maintaining the paths or access areas between beds can also pose problems. If grassed, frequent mowing will be needed. If gravelled or bark chipped, weeds will soon get a hold as soil and compost will spill from the beds. It’s all too easy to spend more time weeding the paths than the crops! Soil-covering membranes are an alternative, but even these can fray, and slugs will lurk underneath! There are other issues. Unless you’re going to tread on the beds, they’ll have to be narrow to enable easy reaching. This can make growing crops that sprawl or need lots of space difficult. Then there’s the problem of weeds. If perennial creeping nasties such as couch, buttercup, and ground elder aren’t thoroughly cleaned out before the beds are set up— it can be next to impossible to remove them from around the edging or under your gravelled paths. I could go on, but the fact is while growing vegetables in a bed system may have lots of pros, it’s not without cons. The latter should not be overlooked or dismissed. Ultimately, whether to grow in beds or not is down to individual choice.

wider benefits, not least of which is minimising the disturbance and damage excessive digging can cause to soil structure and fauna. Because of their artistic appeal, it is easy to overlook some of the complications with growing vegetables in beds. A particular issue is edging. The edge of your vegetable bed needs to be durable to avoid repeated repair or replacement. Wooden planks or boards, the usual option, will rot in time. Even chunky old railway sleeper-style edges won’t last forever. Unless wood is obtained free, or recycled, it’s neither cheap nor particularly sustainable. Wood, and for that matter most other bed edging like tiles or bricks, can also provide a haven for slugs and snails. Edgeless beds may be a better option, but containing the soil and compost can be difficult. I remember seeing some edgeless

Review: Ate O’Clock An evening at Ate O’Clock is the perfect cure for any of the depressingly-dim and overcast wintery nights to come. It starts from the moment you walk through the brightly lit outer doorway and are immediately transported away from the cold and rain down an enchanting alleyway, adorned with fairy lights and quintessentially York lanterns (that wouldn’t be out of place indicating the start-point of one of our city’s many ghost tours). While our impression of Ate O’Clock may have been shaped by a particularly cold Tuesday evening — whatever the weather, the food and service make this restaurant an absolute

Considering the city is well over 1000 years old, it’s no surprise that York’s winding walkways and storied streets are occupied by countless, creative and independent bistros and cafes — here’s our list of a couple you should take your time to seek out and enjoy.

Review: The Old Liquor Store
The Old Liquor Store is an Italianinfluenced restaurant situated at the epicentre of York’s culinary history — inside the old Terry’s Chocolate Works, the factory that employed more than 300 people to produce countless chocolate bars across the best part of the 20th Century. We ordered three courses in the end (for only £36!) starting with the Bresaola Punta
D'anca gorgonzola dolce radicchio, with fresh pear and toasted Hazelnuts, a shaved pear and cheese salad. A perfect combination of sweet, rich and light flavours that perfectly introduced our taste buds in time for the luxurious main course to come. A roast sirloin of Yorkshire reared beef, accompanied with Yorkshire pudding, barolo and veal bone gravy, cauliflower cheese and roasted carrots. The plate is a melting pot of flavour — where the beef is the obvious star event, but the gravy deserves equal plaudits for how it ties everything together. The Old Liquor Store is located on Bishopthorpe Road, call up on 01904 950147 to book your seat.

We hear from avid book reader and creative writer, Ben Robinson who shares his monthly book recommendarions. Happy reading! Usually, I’d go for a monthly theme, but in the spirit of February and trying new things (indoors) while the weather’s still awful, I thought I’d give you a selection of four books, from four different genres. That way you’re more likely to find the book for you. No pressure… Timecode of a Face by Ruth Ozeki Ozeki challenges herself to stare at her reflection for three hours. She details all her thoughts and feelings throughout these three hours. From reflections of her childhood to realisations she is having— it turns out spending three hours with your reflection is quite the revelation. It is simply fascinating to read. Bossypants by Tina Fey One of my favourite genres is autobiography, and Tina Fey does not disappoint with this one. Fey, who is one of the biggest names in comedy, takes us through her journey in the world of entertainment.
The ups, the downs, and the outright hilarious. This book is sure to make you laugh out loud. My Name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout This is one of my favourite novels of the past year. The book tells the story of Lucy’s return to her hometown during the final weeks of her life. She spends those precious final days reconnecting with her previously absent mother. The novel tells the complex but loving tale of mother and daughter relationships. A perfect novel to get you back into reading in 2024. Uncanny by Danny Robins Fancy a spookier read for 2024? For people who want to dabble in horror then this is the book! Uncanny tells real life paranormal stories and looks at them from the eye of sceptics and believers. It is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. You’ll need to sleep with the lights on after this one…
Brighten up your February with a discounted candle Wax Lane— a Haxby-based candle and home fragrance brand — are offering Your Local Link readers a huge 15% discount on their first orders. After receiving a candle-making set as an escape from the abject boredom of the 2020 lockdown, Haxby resident Michelle uncovered an incredible hidden talent in the crafting of candles and wax melts. Michelle gifted the first few wax melt prototypes to close friends and family members, receiving such positive feedback that she decided to take a chance and launch her independent brand. Now four years later, Wax Lane has flourished — Michelle attends monthly Artisan Markets while her products are stocked in independent gift shops and beauty salons up and down the country.
She says that what makes Wax Lane stand out is that “I source only the finest ingredients and materials to be used in the creation of our products. This includes sustainable vegetable wax, as well as rich, luxurious fragrance oils. Each item within our interior fragrance collection has been expertly curated and is subject to a rigorous testing process before it is made available for purchase.” You can purchase products at www. wax-lane.com and receive 15% off your first order with discount code 'Link15'.

Archbishop of York calls for Free School Meal support Stephen Cottrell, The Archbishop of York has called for residents and businesses to support a city council appeal to raise money to provide universal free school meals for all children in York’s primary schools. He has described it as “one way in which we can make a significant difference.” During a 12-month pilot phase beginning in January 2024, the council aim to provide free school meals to all pupils at Westfield Primary School in Acomb. The York Hungry Minds Appeal is part of the council’s wider target to
transform York into an antipoverty city, they say that ensuring that every child is able to eat well supports their ability to learn and so reduces health inequalities between disadvantaged children and their peers. You can listen to the archbishop’s full message at www.tworidingscf.org.uk/ appeal/york-hungry-minds/.

Public help sought to solve a historical mystery... With the right amount of help, York Archaeology Community believe that 2024 will be the year that they finally track down the location of a missing 13th century church. St Peter-in-the-Willows is believed to have stood at a site near the former Willow Green care home — just inside Walmgate Bar— for 300 years, until its demolition in 1549. However, there is no record of its exact location. It is expected that uncovering the full layout of the churchyard, and the location of medieval buildings and yards around it, could reveal countless untold details about York’s medieval history. York Archaeology Community
Engagement Officer Arran Johnson has asked for locals to join in community archaeology sessions. He says, “We have more opportunities for local people to get involved – whether through research, the washing of finds, or even helping us dig a series of small trenches to see what we can find.” If the scheme receives a positive response from residents, it will take place over the spring and summer, before the trenches are filled and turf is re-laid in the autumn. Updates on the project will be posted on the York Archaeology website, where

TRAVEL & HOLIDAYS 48
MEMORIES OF MARRAKECH In December 2023 we headed out to Marrakech for a short break. We wanted to see how the city had recovered from the devastating earthquake that hit some areas in the city as well as the Atlas Mountain villages, just three months earlier. Incredibly we took a flight from Manchester direct to Marrakech (taking just over 3 hours!). On arrival we had unexpected heavy rain and by the time we landed it was so dark that, as we headed into the medina of Marrakech in our private transfer, not much could be seen. Our driver took us straight to the door of our riad — a traditional Moroccan house with an indoor garden and courtyard— which made for a quiet escape from the busy street outside. We were greeted by the owner who welcomed us with a warm bowl of homemade soup before sitting down and talking us through recommendations for the next few days of our visit. The following morning, we awoke to silence and headed down for a breakfast of eggs, pastries, and
fresh fruit. Before long it was time to leave the tranquillity of our riad to go exploring. We opened the main door and stepped straight into the hustle and bustle, the noise of the market traders, children playing, and scooters cutting through the streets. We were guided by locals to stand to the right of the street — there are no traffic lights or signs but there is a local understanding of where to walk/ drive — despite the sheer number of people, we didn’t observe any bumps! We headed for the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa market square. Daytime is certainly a quieter time of day to explore. We wandered the stalls packed with fresh fruit, street food, ceramics, and spices; before heading up to the rooftop terraces where we enjoyed traditional mint tea and fresh fruit juices. It makes for the perfect spot to look out and observe daily life. We spent an afternoon visiting the Secret Garden, despite its location in the middle of the medina, once you enter the garden it is so peaceful— a world away from the chaos that

surrounds it. Even in December, daytime temperatures are a comfortable 20 degrees. After sunset, we headed out for dinner at a restaurant that specializes in local cuisine (on the recommendation of the riad owner). After a delicious meal, we returned to Jemaa el-Fnaa square where we couldn’t help but take a moment — wow, so many people as the smells of spices, the noise of music, and street artists filled the space. Throughout our trip we took a morning visit to the Madrasa Ben Youssef, built in the 14th century, this madrasa was once the largest Islamic school in North Africa and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We then took an afternoon excursion into the Agafay desert for sunset, an evening of local music & dancing where we were served a traditional three-course Moroccan meal. Our final day was spent with a lovely lady, Chef Laila— known locally as Moroccan Mum. When we went to a market to purchase fresh produce, from spices and herbs to
meat and vegetables, she talked us through the entire process, to be certain of the quality before we returned to her kitchen. Across the next couple of hours, she put us to work learning techniques before we sat down to enjoy what we had created. We had a great time exploring Marrakech and the great news is it is becoming easier to reach with new routes from Jet2 and Ryanair coming this year.
