59. JORVIK VIKING FESTIVAL 2019. Yeehaa! Erm… yaaaaarrrghhhh me hearties! No? What do Vikings say again? While you can find out everything there is to know about Vikings on any day of the week at the Jorvik Viking Centre, the 20th-27th will see the return of the legendary Jorvik Viking Festival 2019. Turn to pages 59-62 to find out all about what you can get your teeth (or horns) into.

COLUMNS: 10-11. YORK LIFE. We’re all guilty of maybe not always being as tidy as we should be. Maybe you’ve got a special cupboard that you just shove bits and bobs in that don’t have a ‘place’, or maybe you’ve got one of those beds that lift up to reveal a bottomless pit of storage for ‘things-we’ll-get-round-to’. Well, our Rachel Ragg’s got a special chair. And she’s going to tell you all about it. 16-17. KRYSTAL’S GEMS. This month, Krystal’s talking crystals. Magic and the supernatural have become a bit of a trend so far in 2019, and where there’s a trend, there’s a Your Local Link columnist.

Our shiny website, www.yourlocallink.co.uk, is filled with original content that you won’t find in the magazine. This month, check out…

52-56. EVENTS & GIG DIARY. It’s not all about Valentine’s Day, oh no. Find out what it’s actually all about in our Events Diary. Hint: It’s not the Hokey Cokey, although that does come in at a close second.

That’s right. THE Sir Michael Parkinson. The man behind the pension plans with the free Parker pens (just for enquiring). Well, we’re not enquiring about Parker pens this time (sorry, Parky); instead we’re hearing from the man himself all about his life, his experiences, and his show at The Grand Opera House York this month.

22-23. TIME TRAVEL. Where shall we go this month? Maybe the deepest, darkest depths of the Minster? Or the history behind the legendary shambles? No. We’re treating you to the history of a helmet. The Coppergate Helmet.

YORK LIFE

YOU DID IT! Yep, you survived the dreaded January; full of snoozed alarm clocks, bitterly cold mornings, and that nocturnal feeling of getting up in the dark and coming home in the dark. Sadly, we can’t promise February will be much better when it comes to Mother Nature’s cruel ways, and the alarm clock will still wake you up at an ungodly hour. Unless you’re off on your jollies, in which case we’re really jealous and hope it rains really happy for you. However, what we can promise for your third instalment of winter is that you’re about to read an absolutely cracking edition of Your Local Link magazine.

on the 29th are in for another year of disappointment as their birthday’s cancelled again in 2019. But other than that, it’s nothing special. Or is it? We decided to have a dig about, and see if there’s more to February than meets the eye. Here’s what we found: • February the 5th is World Nutella Day. That’s right – this day is all about that chocolatey hazelnut liquid gold. All the more reason to start Pancake Day early. • Ever feel like you’re going through the same day over and over again? Maybe that’s because it’s Groundhog Day. While the traditional holiday on the 2nd February is about a groundhog in Pennsylvania seeing its shadow and foretelling the likelihood of a long winter (don’t ask), it’s more commonly known today as that film where Bill Murray has lots of déjà vu.

And, as we scoured the city for the fabulous events we’ve added to said magazine (which there are loads of, such as the unmissable Jorvik Viking Festival 2019 – check out pages 59-62 to find out more), we got to thinking about what makes February special. March signals the start of spring as the clocks go forward, and April’s the month of chocolate as the Easter bunny arrives… so what’s memorable about February? Of course, Cupid’s keen to do some matchmaking on the 14th as the loveit-or-hate-it Valentine’s Day forces us to buy our other halves novelty teddies. And those who were born SARAH

• Are you one of those people that could fall asleep on a washing line? If so, the 28th is the day for you. This is National Public Sleeping Day and gives you full rein to sleep wherever the hell you want*. Long train journey? Have a nap. Studying in the library? Shut those droopy eyes. So, February isn’t just about love and leap years. And there’s more – some other notable days in February that didn’t quite make the cut include National Love Your Pet Day (clearly this should be every day), National Make a Friend Day, and the ever-important National Sticky Bun Day. Wishing you all a very merry National Get to Know an Independent Real Estate Broker month (for real), The Your Local Link team x *Probably best not to take forty winks during that important team meeting.

YORK LIFE

AND LIFE IN GENERAL

Ah me. Dear old February. A time to reflect on all the New Year’s Resolutions we didn’t keep.

night” - but there is one thing Mrs Hinch is suspiciously quiet about.

Mine, as always, involved being tidy.

This is not any old chair. It is the very special Chair which lives in the bedroom.

‘Have you heard of Mrs Hinch?’ a similarly domestically challenged friend asked me, as we ate our lunch off her removal boxes (two years after her move). Indeed I have. Mrs Hinch is my inspiration. An Essex housewife turned Instagram cleaning guru, she dispenses wisdom which I aspire to live by, such as “I love to wash my skirting boards and woodwork with a mix of fabric softener and water.” However. This got me thinking. It’s all very well proselytising about washing your skirting boards and “putting your sink to bed every

And that is: The Chair.

My Chair a is a lovely pink velvet Victorian nursing chair, bought for the sole purpose of enabling me to sit in my neat and tidy bedroom, reading improving literature and thinking profound and/or poetical thoughts. However, The Chair doesn’t seem to have got the message. For rather than being a place of profundity, it’s somehow morphed into a waiting room for clothes. And not just washed-and-waiting-to-beput-away clothes (these live on the stairs, obviously). No: these are those dreaded items of clothing. The ones that have been worn - but not for long enough to merit inclusion in the washing basket. Namely all the clothes which are not allowed back into the wardrobe in case the ‘very slightly worn’ germs hop around and infect the ‘completely and utterly clean’ clothes. Then, of course, there are the decorating clothes. There

is no point putting these away, because you might need to wear them again in an hour’s time. The same is true of gardening clothes, and clothes you wear to visit Hazel Court. Let’s not forget about the ‘slightly out of fashion’ clothes, awaiting a decision about their future. If these enter the wardrobe, they will never be seen again. And that would be silly and wasteful of crucial wardrobe space. And then there are the really irritating items. These fall into two categories. One: items that would have been returned, had they not been buried in The Chair for more than 30 days; and two: clothes awaiting repair and/ or alteration. These latter can’t go in the wardrobe because they’d be forgotten. Whereas they will obviously be dealt with promptly if they’re fossilised beneath the ‘not quite worn’, ‘should have been returned, but will now have to go on eBay’, and ‘decorating/ gardening’ items. I feared it was just me, but a quick straw poll of various friends revealed several Chairs, along with An Ottoman, A Butler’s Tray, The Top Of A Washing Basket and An Exercise Bike (apparently the handles are very useful for items which need hanging, but are not fit for the wardrobe). Teenagers, it appears, just use A Floordrobe, so I suppose I should be glad that it hasn’t quite come to that yet. It’s occasionally necessary to tidy The Chair normally when the pile of clothes overbalances.

COLUMNIST

Rachel Ragg

This can be an exciting moment. It’s a bit like reaching the bottom of a washing basket, in that you can find all sorts of things you thought you’d given to the charity shop. It’s rather like going shopping, but in the comfort of your own bedroom (I wanted a linen coat: it turns out I already have two). If you’re really lucky, you could turn out to be harbouring a small fortune in 1990s vintage items, as one friend found when turning out her Spare Bedroom. But what to do with the less exciting finds - namely those clothes that have been deemed not quite worthy of a wash for the past few weeks? Sling them into the washing machine while you cogitate further. Lo and behold: one clear Chair for sitting on. Mrs Hinch would be proud of me. I can now sit and read a nice book in peace and quiet. Thomas Hardy’s poetry, for example. I look around. The piles of clothes might have gone. But what is revealed is something far more challenging: the Book Piles. When’s the next train to Essex?

Horoscopes

A STROLOGIST

James Christie

AQUARIUS 20TH JAN - 18TH FEB A feisty month – during which you may choose to allow the instinctive and intuitive side of your nature take the lead. This might turn into what other people call impulsiveness, but it seems to me that you’ve run out of patience pottering around with patch-and-mend half measures. These energies will affect male and female members of the sign in different ways. Gentlemen may decide it’s time to buy a new car – something expensive that’s only got two seats (could be worse, could be a flaming motor bike!) – while ladies demand a holiday.

PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR

Quite an easy and non-confrontational month in relationships and affairs of the heart, with strong evidence of a partner’s commitment and dedication. Finances are stable, although not exactly exciting, and if you’re looking to win the national lottery, sorry, but I don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon. Nevertheless, this is a sound and solid month, wherein stability and security are the key words of the day.

ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR

You’re far from being a control freak, but you do need to feel that you’re in charge of your own life. This poses problems for you in February when, on more than one occasion, plans have to be changed at the last minute. And even when plans do fall into place, they don’t work out the way you expected them to. I know I’m sounding like an old hippy, but hang loose and go with the flow.

L to R: Ed Sheeran, Abraham Lincoln, Krystal Starkey - Local Link Writer, Bob Marley

And sod the Costa del Sol – they want to go to Las Vegas! Either way it all costs money, and if the money isn’t readily at hand, it’ll be found one way or the other. This energy is both aggressive and uncompromising, and is born out of many months, maybe even years, of having to conform and toe the line. Where couples are in harmony in these matters, wow; watch the fireworks and listen to the big bangs. Where couples aren’t in harmony sparks will still fly – but in a very different kind of way.

TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY

These deep mid-winter months are not the best of times for Taureans. There is no sign of spring, and no spring in your step. Everything seems to be such an effort and it’s hard to find much enthusiasm for anything. If it’s any consolation, there are millions of other Taureans out there feeling exactly the same way, so take heart in the knowledge that you’re not suffering alone.

GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN

Rather an educational month in many respects, especially in the sense of seeing some of the key players in your life in a new light. This should bring pleasure and disappointment in equal measure! There’s a flurry of travel activity around the 14th, 15th, and 16th, and anything that can provide you with a break and a change of scenery – even if it is only a couple of days – has got to be worthwhile.

For details of private readings, call 01423 339770 or email:jcp@magepublishing.co.uk

HERE ARE A FEW FA M O U S FAC E S YO U S H A R E YO U R S I G N W I T H. . .

As they’d say over in the West Riding: “Ey, there’s trouble at t’mill!” Your troubles come from other people who stand in your way and tell you that you cannot do what you want to do. Tensions that have been brewing for months now come to a head, and you have two choices: either step back and seek compromise, or charge ahead regardless – and lose a few people along the way.

LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG

This could be a lovely month for relationships and all affairs of the heart, and the 14th would be a good day to get a few of your secret hopes and desires out into the open. Rather than being rejected, I think they’ll be well received, and this could lead to even warmer, more wonderful times ahead. Emotional advice from a same-sex friend should be regarded with a degree of suspicion!

VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT

Chop, chop; busy, busy; bang, bang! New work routines or new jobs put you in the firing line of all the action, and February will be an intensely busy month. This is great from a financial point of view, and your bank manager should be very pleased with you – but there are going to be times when you question the worth of what you’re doing and start contemplating a whole new different lifestyle.

LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT

An occasionally moody month caused in part by an older relative who feels that they have the right to tell you how to live your life. You’ll work hard at avoiding a

confrontation, but circumstances conspire to create that confrontation (I’d guess any time between the 15th and 19th). And when this happens, you must not back down! If this leads to an unholy row, so be it!

SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV

English winters can be totally miserable, but I hardly think you’re going to notice! You’ll be wrapped in a blanket of emotional euphoria (well, something like that, anyway), and although it might be blowing a blizzard outside, you won’t even notice as you snuggle up in front of a fire with someone you love and a bottle of good wine. Not you? Well think on this… it could be!

In most respects February is a reasonably well-balanced month. You’ll be getting to grips with new work routines and might even find benefit from experimenting with some relaxation therapies. DO MENTION THE WAR

You won’t find any Fawlty Towers faux pas here, as members of the Western Front Association (WFA) meet with the sole purpose to discuss and remember the Great War. And the WFA meet here in our very own city – at The Hive, Manor Academy. Whether you’re a member or not, you’re just as welcome to attend their monthly meetings to explore World War I in more detail. February’s meeting is titled Shout at the Devil: The Hunting of SMS Königsberg, and tells the story of the ship that became famous through the books of CS Forester and Wilbur Smith. Join the talk for a £4 donation on the day, and you’ll also receive free tea or coffee. n To find out more about the WFA and the York meetings, contact Peter Palmer on 01274 642907.

YOUR CITY NEEDS YOU Were you conscripted to National Service in the York and Yorkshire region? Know someone who was? Then the Tang Hall Local History Group (THLHG) want to hear from you. The THLHG meet once a month to create a photographic archive of the past – with an aim to share this with the rest of the community. Their new project involves tracing the men who were conscripted to National Service – to find out who they were and where they went. n If you think you can help the THLHG with their search, get in touch – call Ralph Peacock on 421656 or email tanghallhistory@gmail.com for a questionnaire.

JOIN THE KLUB Everything’s kooler when you change the letter ‘C’ for a letter ‘K’. That’s why, if you’re aged 45 or over, you need to get yourself down to YorKlub. The group, which meet regularly for their Club Night at The Black Horse and Coffee Club at the delicious Café Luca, are all about socialising and making friends. They encourage both singles and couples to come along, and regularly get involved in a huge variety of events. And get this – they’re looking for new members. Activities are relaxed, friendly and varied – a typical week includes a trip to the cinema, a night at a 1940s music concert, a trip to Burton Agnes Hall, and a day trip to the Yorkshire Moors! So whether you want to meet new people, try new things, or a bit of both – give YorKlub a try. Members are diverse and full of like-minded individuals wanting to enjoy and expand their social life in a safe environment. n To find out more, visit www.yorklub. info or call 07957 569895.

SING, SMILE, SOCIALISE We all enjoy warbling in the shower, or trying to out-do Beyoncé in the car – but did you know that a good sing-song has been shown to better your wellbeing? As a result, York Hospital are recruiting singers for their new wellbeing choir. Jessica Sharp, Art and Design Project Coordinator at York Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust, says: “There’s a huge amount of evidence to show that singing improves our mood, with a decrease in stress, depression and anxiety. “We want to encourage as many people as possible to come and join us. We hope to provide opportunities for people to socialise, and most importantly, to feel good and have fun!” The choir runs every Wednesday from 12-1.30pm in the hospital’s Chapel until the 27th March. n If you’re interested in joining, call Jessica on 725265 or email jessica.sharp@york.nhs.uk to find out more.

YORK LIFE

It’s witching hour I’ve taken a look into the rising popularity of witchcraft. You’re welcome.

Lana Del Rey recently let slip that she’d put a hex on US President, Donald Trump. That’s pop culture right there. Argument over. Magic is having a moment. We can all go home. There are now 2.5 million posts on Instagram with the hashtag witchcraft. The whole thing just looks cool. Wellshot photos of crystals, white sage and various tools fill our news feeds alongside relatable quotes, chats about spells, full moons and trade secrets. Like tarot readings and spirituality, otherworldly practices are going from strength to strength - as we become more disenchanted with what’s going on around us today, it makes sense that people have started look elsewhere. The appeal’s never been lost on me. As well as having a mild obsession with all things shiny from a young age, I’ve grown up with Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Harry Potter. The fascination with magic has only grown over the years, I’m sure there’s plenty of people in my generation who would agree. But there’s a more serious social correlation, too. If you look at witchcraft you might see power, independence and self love amongst the spells and

16

potions. Aspirational stuff, with a particularly feminist agenda. The word ‘witch’ hasn’t always been a trendy Instagram hashtag. Witches have faced historic persecution in the mid century. Around 80% of witch killings were female. Witchcraft actually celebrates the divine feminine, and with a history that’s draped in patriarchy - it’s easy to see why blokes with pitchforks liked chasing independent women who lived mostly man free either due to age, misfortune or choice. But hey - living without a man was a bit of a sin back then, especially if you were good at growing herbs. I totally get it. Bloody herbs. In Britain - witchcraft was made a capital offence in 1563 - there was an estimated 500 witch deaths before the act was repealed in 1736, but that wasn’t to say that the hunts stopped entirely. The wiccan religion has been one surrounded in mystery for a long time, but if you pay close attention, it’s really not that mysterious at all. I recently

COLUMNIST

Krystal’s gems

enrolled on a witchcraft course with the Centre of Excellence. I naively waded in, expecting frogs legs, fairy dust and crazy spells. But what I got was a case for respecting mother nature, respecting yourself and taking time to do something that you enjoy. I learnt that it’s a highly inclusive religion where wellbeing and ritual play as bigger part as any potion or spell does. On the theme of good witchcraft, our very own Mother Shipton, who was more well known for her famous

predictions and petrifying well. A good witch by all accounts. I’m truly sorry to say, that no, I won’t be the next Mother Shipton, but if you want a prediction: I can take a stab in the dark and say that York City probs won’t win their next match (sorry guys). Despite witches being a historically marginalised group, witchcraft is a completely inclusive religion. All are welcome, regardless of gender, sexuality or ethnicity. It’s a truly accepting practice. In a Trump/Brexit era, where society is so divided with hate and anger, witchcraft provides a comforting and necessary tonic. And for that: I won’t knock it.

THIS MONTH: THE COPPERGATE HELMET

York has been a Mecca for archaeologists, historians and antiquarians for several centuries, and there should be no surprise why. Apart from the wealth of ancient structures found in the city, many of which are still standing, York has ‘given up the goods’ time and time again with the discovery of important and priceless artefacts. One of the most significant discoveries must be the Coppergate Helmet. Most of you should know the story by now. In the late 1970s the York Archaeological Trust began excavating several small pockets of land off Coppergate. It was a huge dig that took years, resulting in the Jorvik Viking Centre that is a pride attraction in the city. However, not everything that was discovered there was of Viking origin. Roman and Anglo-Saxon finds were also unearthed, with the Coppergate Helmet belonging to the latter group of people.

HEADS UP The helmet is a stunningly preserved example of Anglo-Saxon craft and metalwork. Dating from around 760 CE, and around a century before the city was taken by Viking invaders, the helmet is mostly made from iron and copper. Available to view today at The Yorkshire Museum, the discovery shed light upon the construction methods used by our Anglo-Saxon ancestors and fired many an imagination as to why such a clearly expensive item ended up at the bottom of a pit for 1300 years. Although an important and delicate find, the Coppergate Helmet didn’t have the nicest of reintroductions to the world. On 12th May 1982, Andy

Shaw, operator of a mechanical excavator, noticed that his digger had hit something hard. Climbing to the ground to clear what he believed to be a large rock, Andy noticed that the object was metallic and curved… and that he’d almost completely torn it apart. The experts from York Archaeological Trust stepped in to oversee the removal of the item, which was very clearly a helmet, and took it to a secure room at the Borthwick Institute – to both keep it from the air which could cause corrosion and keep it safe from thieves. After the British Museum helped in cleaning and repairing it, the Coppergate Helmet was identified as Anglo-Saxon and the ornate Latin inscription could be read. ‘In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and God; and to all we say amen Oshere'. ANGLO FASHION From that, experts could glean that Oshere was most probably the owner of the helmet, or indeed the person for whom it had been made.

Which begs the question: why did Oshere’s fancy hat, which seemed in pretty good nick, end up at the bottom of a hole with other seemingly random items? The location of the find correlates roughly to where today the Coppergate Walk openair café area is, so why was it there and not buried with Oshere himself?

BATHROOM INSPIRATION

From simply stylish, luxurious elegance to cool contemporary, we have beautiful collections for all styles and budgets on display.

HIDDEN TREASURES The answer might come from the time in which the helmet was made. Although 8th century York was a good 100 years away from a bloody Norse capture, the Anglo-Saxon city, or Eoferwic, was still a very violent and turbulent place. The many kings of Northumbria, and all other Saxon kingdoms, never gave up power willingly and peacefully, with almost all of them being murdered or exiled by successors. Oshere, a possible noble, would need a helmet like that, to show off his wealth and status (and, y’know, protect his head from successors). So, perhaps during a rough time in dear old 8th century York, Oshere (or whomever was in possession of the helmet last) felt the need to hide it. The pit in which it was discovered was found not to be a toilet or dump, nor was it a grave. As it was lined with wooden planks, and as it also contained other items that may have possibly fallen in alongside the helmet accidentally, it was most probably a well. The helmet seems to have been hidden there, to keep it safe while the owner fled, hoping to soon after return and claim it back. That never happened. Whatever the story, and whoever Oshere was, the fact remains that The Coppergate Helmet is one of the most important archaeological finds of recent years. And it lives just down the road. Go have a gander.

YORK LIFE

The quality of the helmet, combined with the use of Latin, would suggest that Oshere was probably a fairly well-to-do and educated chap, and may have been part of the local Northumbrian royalty.

COLUMNIST It’s all change again at Bootham Crescent, with the club appointing their third manager just over halfway through the season. In fact, York City have had more managers in the last five years than Katie Price has had relationships; but hopefully they’ll settle down with new gaffer Steve Watson after the highly-rated Geordie replaced the latest victim, Sam Collins. I felt a bit for Collins; his interviews were always refreshingly honest. He cared – and it doesn’t seem like two minutes since two supporters started a chant of: ‘Sexy Sam’s Barmy Army’ during an away game at Hereford; seemingly thinking his hands-in-pockets style was an attractive trait. Collins could, however, lose track of what he said between games. One week he said he would always back his players and they were a good side, yet a few days later there were only a few he trusted; and brought what is known as ‘Doritogate’ into the public domain. Ultimately though, managers are judged on results. When I travelled to Darlington on Boxing Day, I was convinced of an away day victory; Darlo hadn’t won for nine games. In fact, they’d only won twice at home all season and their last home game was against financially-stricken, rock-bottom Nuneaton who won 2-1. All York needed to do (in my eyes) was turn up; which I guess they didn’t as they lost 5-1. I think for the first time in 27 years of support I thought: why do I keep doing this? It didn’t help that the previous away game, at Harrogate, was another defeat – but in blizzard-like conditions, which culminated in a lorry speeding through a huge puddle and drenching me to

the bone, leaving me looking like Andy Dufresne from The Shawshank Redemption movie poster. Speaking of redemption and such is football, by New Years Day, the mighty Minstermen turned the form book back on its head, winning 4-0 in the reverse fixture against Darlington, in arguably Collins best performance. But by Saturday a 1-0 defeat at Curzon Ashton saw him dismissed and replaced by Gateshead’s Watson. The build up to Watson’s appointment was interesting – particularly the ever-changing odds with the bookmakers in the build-up. John Askey was the hot early favourite, despite him saying he didn’t want the job. Former hero Richard Cresswell even had all bets suspended due to the amount of money put on him – but a bookie explained that anyone putting a couple of pounds on someone means they automatically put them on the list. In other words, I could have put a tenner on myself and started a rumour. In fairness, I once got Forest Green Rovers to the Champions League Final on Football Manager 2013. As it is, Steve Watson sounds like a good choice. Certainly,

MEMORIALS

Gateshead supporters are full of praise, which is a good sign; as is his apparent footballing philosophy. Some are calling it a poisoned chalice, but surely the only way is up, and Watson with his superior playing career can set the standards and get it going in the right direction. The new stadium’s on the horizon – this might just be the catalyst. Then again, I said this sort of stuff on the way to Darlington! One thing’s for sure, it’ll be easier to turn York City around than it will Burton, after they lost the first leg of the League Cup Semi-Final 9-0 to Manchester City. If it was junior football, City would have given Gabriel Jesus a yellow bib and let Burton have him for the last 20 minutes to even it up a little. Closer to home, and Leeds United look like they might finally get promotion from the Championship having accumulated a decent points advantage over Christmas. At the time of writing though it’s all getting a bit controversial with their manager Marcelo Bielsa, admitting that he sent someone to spy on upcoming opponents Derby County after the police received a complaint. The old bill were said to be following up some ‘Leeds’ but needn’t have bothered when Bielsa just came out and said it was common practice in South America. I didn’t know if this was true so I went onto the official Leeds United website that immediately popped up with that standard message of ‘we value your privacy’ regarding cookies on their site… the irony!

We all threw paper planes at school – they were a much more creative and exciting way to get rid of the now-redundant paper on your desk, and usually got a laugh from friends, too. So now you’re all grown up and your paper plane days are behind you, it’s time to move on to the adult equivalent: Origami Sticky Note Pads.

SEEING DOUBLE It’s pretty much everyone’s worst nightmare to be held accountable for a crime you didn’t commit. Even more so if you’ve been framed and all the evidence points at you. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening to some innocent motorists. Car cloning – where number plates are being copied and used for stealing petrol, speeding, and, in more severe cases, ram raiding – increased drastically in 2018. And while it’s not rife in York, it’s certainly happening across the UK – so you should definitely aim to take the necessary steps to protect yourself and your car: • If you’re buying a used car, make sure that all details on the paperwork and the plate, such as the seller’s name and address, match up. Many cloned number plates end up on stolen cars – and if you buy one it could get returned to its rightful owner with no refund to you. • Complete an HPI check. These checks give you all the information you need about the car you’re thinking about buying – such as whether it’s been stolen, its MOT history and any number plate changes. • If you receive a fine that you know you’re not responsible for, then you might be a victim of car cloning. Make sure you notify the police and the DVLA straight away with as much evidence as you have.

You’re all toasty in your gloves and someone calls you. You either take the gloves off, get really cold again, and answer the call – or let it ring out. Usually the latter. Unless, of course, you have one of those ultra-unstylishpairs-with-the-special-fingertips-that-are-supposedto-work-with-touchscreens-but-very-rarely-do. Well, let us introduce you to LETEO – the world’s smartest luxury leather gloves, handmade in Italy. FULLY CHARGED Hi all – David here this time. Matt’s given me his pen and so you’ve got me this month! We don’t just offer excellent appliances and quality service you know, Herbert Todd – or Grandpa Todd as we knew him – was an electrician. And we continue to apprentice train electricians to service your electrical needs to this day. Our latest training (along with completing a mountain of paperwork) means that we’re now fully approved by Rolec who manufacture a range of car charge points and NICEIC. We’re also now accredited by the government to install Rolec car charge points and claim the grants to make them the obvious choice when selecting a car charger for your home. Working with local tradesmen and suppliers we’ve also recently completed the installation of a number of projects involving automated gates: we’re able to offer a range of quality timber gates and then complete the installation of the automation for those gates. The automation can also be retro-fitted to most existing gates, and it doesn’t have to be to keep folks out; I recently installed gates at home to keep our small children in – and safe!

ADVERTISERS ANNOUCEMENT ASK THE EXPERT MATT TODD

As well as the above, we can also offer many solutions for the outside of your property with security lighting, CCTV, and garden lighting to name but a few. So if you’ve recently purchased an electric car, or you’re considering it, please contact us at contracting@ htodd.co.uk and we can advise – and provide a free, no-obligation quote to keep you charged and ready for action! Equally if you’d like a set of good quality gates that will open and shut at the press of a button then please give us a call on 628676 and we can discuss your requirements. As ever, from a light bulb you just can’t change to full re-wires – the Herbert Todd & Son contracting team are here to help with professional and friendly service.

THINKING OF BEING A LANDLORD? Have you decided it’s time to invest? This time of year brings a variety of investment properties to the market, from one-bedroom flats to fivebedroom houses. So, how do you decide which property would be the better investment? Research is the answer. Areas vary in historical value and capital gain, and rental values will vary from property to property. If you need to do work to the property then this has extra costs involved – and not just the cost of the refurbishment. Different locations have varying appeal to potential tenants, therefore demand can affect whether or not you’ll have an instant return on your investment.

Other considerations include: • Your legal responsibilities with regards to the property and the tenant • Legislation changes and updates • Tax implications, and • Which buy-to-let mortgage company to use. The list can be endless – but research and advice can be invaluable. I’ve advised new and established Landlords over the years, helping them to choose the right property and pointing them in the right direction for advice and support. I consistently find the right properties for the right Landlords, and have the tenants in place within a month of completion. Call me – and let’s alleviate some of those first-time Landlord concerns.

prevent pests and diseases harbouring in the rotting vegetation and causing problems later on. Check protective coverings on newly planted and borderline hardy plants are still secure, until the risk of frosts have passed.

It may still be cold and miserable outside, and the last thing on your mind will be gardening; but try to banish those winter blues by reminding yourself of the fact that spring is just around the corner. And there are plenty of jobs to do in the garden in preparation for the forthcoming season. TURNING THE SOIL Firstly, start preparing the ground for spring planting. Turning the soil is a great way to improve drainage and aeration, giving your plants a better environment to grow in. Also, try covering the soil with polythene or cloches – this warms the earth so that sowing can take place earlier. PRUNING Pruning is another essential task this month. Cut back any perennials, ornamental grasses and summerflowering deciduous shrubs such as Buddleia, to encourage new growth later in the season. Deadhead winter bedding and remove old leaves to encourage a longer flowering period – it also makes the garden look tidier! PLANTING Dependent on the weather conditions you can

continue to plant shrubs, trees, hedging and roses. If the ground isn’t frozen, now is also a good time to move any shrubs that may have outgrown their current location or are in the wrong place. Prepare the new site by adding some compost and bonemeal to help root development and water in well, making sure the soil is firmly pressed around the plant. BEING GREENHOUSE-READY If you’re going to grow anything in the greenhouse for the forthcoming season, start by sterilising it, cleaning the framework and glazing and any pots or seed trays that you might want to re-use. This should remove any pests or diseases that may have been in the greenhouse. If the weather is mild you can open vents, which will help reduce fungal infections. Although you must remember to shut them again before mid-afternoon when the temperature starts to drop again. As potential snow and frosts can still be forecast for the month at this time, also ensure that your greenhouse heaters are still in working order.

Clearing out the garden shed is probably not the most thrilling of jobs to do, but if the weather turns then this is a great opportunity to clear out any old debris cluttering up your shed. Also, clean up your gardening tools such as spades, forks and secateurs to stop them from rusting, and get your lawnmower serviced so that everything’s in full working order come springtime. PUTTING YOUR FEET UP Once you’ve done all these tasks, why not make a nice hot mug of tea and sit down – and start planning on what to buy for later in the season. February is the best time to start getting your plug plants, seeds and summer flowering bulbs for summer-long colour in your garden. Bulbs and tubers such as Gladioli and Dahlias can be started off in pots – as long as they’re kept in a frost-free place, such as a greenhouse or cold frame. Happy gardening!

KEEPING TIDY General maintenance on the garden is essential in preparation for spring. Start by removing any dead leaves from the garden and under hedging, as this will

Entry by suggested donation of £5 for adults and £3 for concessions. INTRODUCTION TO WOODLAND MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP SAT 16TH FEB, 9.30am-3.30pm, St Nicks Environment Centre. Learn how to manage small woodlands for wildlife with Nature Reserve Manager Jonathan Dent. Entry is £65 for adults and £50 for concessions, including a simple lunch. Booking is essential.

Every garden should have a compost heap. In fact, every garden should have at least three: one ‘mixing’ (a heap to which compostable material is being added); one ‘cooking’ (a complete heap in the process of decomposition); and one ‘cooked’ (a mature heap containing ready-to-use compost).

compost. To keep heat in my heaps are mainly built from wood, often old pallets, as wood has better insulating properties than materials such as plastic. I also cover the top of heaps. Old carpets or thick layers of cardboard are ideal.

The best way to make good compost is one of the most controversial gardening topics. Numerous books, leaflets and websites offer advice – often contradictory. I don’t pretend to be an expert compost maker, but over the years I’ve learnt a few essential ‘rules’.

The bigger the better. The fringes of any heap, even one built out of wood, tend to stay cooler than the centre. A small heap will have a higher edge-to-core ratio and therefore retain less heat. This will slow the composting process and leave a lot of partially rotted material around the sides. I like all my compost bins to be at least a cubic metre in volume.

RULE #1 Thoroughly mix ingredients. It’s not so much what you put in the heap, but how you blend it that counts. Apart from woody prunings and leftover cooked food I put all garden ‘waste’ in the heap. But I try to avoid adding too much of the same type of material in one go. A common mistake is to overdo the lawn mowings. Too many of these all at once and you’ll have a soggy mess. RULE #2 Maximise heat. A hot heap will cook more quickly and produce better quality

RULE #3

Other rules include making heaps on earth rather than a hard surface so soil organisms can gain access; positioning in a shady or semi-shady place to maintain an even temperature; and gentle watering if the heap becomes very dry. It’s often said that turning a heap is also essential. There’s no doubt this speeds up the composting process, but it’s extremely hard work! I never turn a heap and still get acceptable-quality compost.

Tony Chalcraft There’s another essential composting rule that’s sometimes overlooked. That rule is to have patience. Most heaps will eventually produce compost unless completely neglected or filled with unsuitable materials. How long it takes partly depends on when a heap is constructed. One made in the late spring or summer will compost far quicker than one built in the autumn or winter when the temperature is cooler. Finally – get the best from your composting efforts. Compost is good for any garden but its goodness can vary. While an excellent soil conditioner, its nutrient value may be limited. It is also likely to contain, unless a very high heap temperature is achieved, lots of uncooked weed seeds. Because of these drawbacks I hesitate to rely entirely on compost to fuel my fruit and vegetables, supplementing it with animal manures and other organic fertilisers. I also make sure it’s not spread where I’ll be sowing crops that can easily be swamped by the rash of weed seedlings.

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.

FINISHED

Call for messengers and send them to all four corners of the kingdom, post haste. The noble House of Mosley-Chalk has important news to declare: We’re not having any more kids. That’s right, York; you heard it here first. Mama and Papa Mosley-Chalk (or ‘The Fit One’ and ‘Beardy-Chin McFat-Face’, to which we were once genuinely referred) shall reproduce no more. Our progeny have all been progeny-ed and never again will our halls be filled with the sound of a birthing pool being inflated. We done, bruv. This might not sound like important news to you, especially in a world where Brexit is Brexiting and Trump is Trumping, but to me… ‘tis.

MUSINGS Up until this point, despite having already cooked, ejected, and raised four entire human people, my wife was in two minds about wanting more children. “Five is such a nice round number,” she would say, skipping through a meadow, stroking fawns. “And I feel another girl would complete

the set.” “Oh,” I’d utter, with baby sick on my shoulder. “So is four. Four points make a square. Which is the best shape.” “Mmm…” she’d sigh, and start mouthing baby names too liberal and modern to repeat here, lest they enrage more traditionally-minded readers. Therefore, I had assumed that at some point soon, I would be called upon to once again fulfil my husbandly duties and provide yet more of my awardwinning DNA. But no. Recently she decided that she was indeed done and that we shall have no more kids.

babysitter would cost for a month while my wife and I toured the nudist beaches of southern Italy, I focussed on our baby. Now ten months old and starting to do those scary things like standing unassisted, saying simple words, and seeming to understand everything, I did feel genuinely sad. His baby-ness seems now more precious than ever. Whereas in the past I’d moaned about wanting the kids to grow up quick so that they can learn to make me an espresso and then move out, now I want to keep them all young forever – especially the baby.

TALKING

JAR

We spoke about this at length in a thoughtful, supportive manner: hands were held, tears were cried, and bittersweet things were said. I agreed that although it meant the beginning of a new chapter for us as parents, and as people, I was sad to think that our baby days were numbered. Internally I was like: AWWWWWW YEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHH! HAPPY THOUGHTS HAPPY THOUGHTS LA LA LA AH AH AH AH HA HA HA HA HA NO MORE BABIES NO MORE BABIES NO MORE POOPY NAPPIES FREEEEEEEEEDOMMMMMM!!!!!!! After I’d calmed down, and once I’d stopped researching how much a

I once saw some horrific Facebook news video about the Chinese practice of keeping kittens in jars all their life, so they stay small. It was barbaric and disgusting, but it’s kinda given me an idea. If I kept my baby tightly wrapped up in a sling on my chest ALL THE TIME then maybe he’d stay that way forever. He’d be 20, and we’d be chatting about adult stuff, but he’d be tiny and doughy and all cheeks and my baby still. The other three are already too big. They’re ruined.

I’M THE BEST ONE In other relevant news, my wifey recently had her DNA

COLUMNIST

Howard Mosley-Chalk

sequenced, as I did a couple of years back. We were interested to see what her ancestry make-up was all about, following my exotic blend of British, Viking and Australian Aboriginal (a whole 0.1% of me – explains my natural ability with a boomerang). However, the results were a little shocking. Those who know my wife, and have seen her face on a regular basis, might have guessed there was something unusual going on there; like how Björk looks a bit Asian, or how some people would just suit playing an Elf in a Lord of the Rings film. But no. She’s 100% British & Irish. Ha. The kids were slightly disappointed to hear that, hoping to have had something cool to add to my awesome Viking contribution, which so clearly has made them solid, fair-haired, and excellent at pillaging. Nope. Mama’s DNA is just the local stuff. So yeah, me and my genetically uninteresting wife will now embark on a new chapter of our lives. One filled with excitement, adventures, and condoms.

HENDRIX

TIMOTHY Poor Timothy wasn’t in good condition when he was found, however he’s now fit and well and ready for his new forever home. This little lad loves cuddles and attention – and a good run about! He’s not suitable for families with young children or small animals, but teenagers and large breed dogs would be fine, providing the two dogs get on well at the centre!

District Branch on 654949 orvisit www.rspca-yorkhome. org.uk

This beautiful boy is most certainly a charmer! His old home sadly didn’t meet his needs, but he’s now fit and healthy, and ready to find a new home. If you’re an experienced dog owner who will understand his requirements – and you don’t have any other pets – then you could just be the one for Hendrix. He’s a cuddly boy though – so he’ll need to move in with someone who won’t leave him on his own for too long.

This old girl is certainly beautiful – a Ragdoll brought to the centre when her owner fell ill. She’s extremely sociable (more dog than cat!) and so she won’t want to be left on her own for too long. She loves attention and is happiest when snuggled on your lap. The Ragdoll breed sheds all year long, so Sassy will need regular grooming. n Visit www.cats.org.uk

What do you think of when you think of a kid’s birthday party? Soggy balloons… dull village hall… DJ Big John playing the same ‘Kids Go Pop’ album over and over again… riveting stuff. Well, Speedkix are here to change that stereotype once and for all. Get this – when your child goes to a Speedkix party, they could be about to go zorbing (running in a giant ball), have a go at combat archery, play football, or even take down enemies in an intense Nerf war. Activities like these mean the parties suit all ages – even adults! That’s right, look no further for your next stag or hen party. And it’s not just parties – Speedkix also

work with football clubs and schools to help with fundraising, and run coaching sessions. n So if you want to give your little one a party to remember, visit www.speedkix.co.uk or call the team on 07867 545483. Remember – there ain’t no party like a Speedkix party!

PLANT A SEED When it’s cold and blustery outside, all we want to do is snuggle up at home and not come out until April – because March can be a bit hit-and-miss these days. We don’t want to battle through chilly winds, wet rain (you know, that really wet rain), or, dare we say it, snow. And neither do plants. Most plants are ‘hibernating’ at the moment, waiting for the first signs of spring before they pop up. However, the lovely volunteers at

Poppleton Community Railway Nursery (PCRN) are laughing in the face of winter, and are currently doing their bit for the upcoming season by preparing their greenhouse growing spaces. Why not pop down and have a look at what this lovely Nursery has to offer? It’s open to visitors every Wednesday and Friday from 10am-3.30pm, where you can explore railway artefacts and historic buildings while browsing plant sales. Or maybe you fancy getting your hands muddy and volunteering? n If so, get in touch with the Nursery at 797623, or visit www.poppletonrailwaynursery.co.uk to find out more.

A SPOT OF BOTHER

This month resident beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri, answers our most common questions when it comes to spot-prone skin and acne.

Dr Saleena Zimri

When it comes to our skin, spots are the most unwanted guests. If you suffer with spot prone skin it can be frustrating when high street products don’t have the intended effect. Whether it’s serious acne, hormonal spots or painful cysts: here at Skin Doctor, we know a fair bit about how spots happen, and how best to treat them. Let us share it with you. SPOTS - WHY THOUGH? There are many factors that can contribute to the cause of spots: • As Hair follicles can become blocked by excessive sebum on the skin and an accumulation of dead skin cells • Some cosmetic products can block hair follicles • Hormones can cause an increased production of sebum and an accumulation of dead skin cells at the follicle opening • The P.acne bacteria grows and multiplies in the sebum. In order to effectively fight spots each stage of the spot development process needs to be tackled.

EXPERT
