Meet the YLL team.
We’ve been really looking forward to July. Welcoming in with open arms, all the long summer nights, al fresco dining, social events, and of course, trips t' coast. As you may have seen from the front cover of this month’s issue, one of Yorkshire’s most popular family attractions, York Maze is back. So, whether you’re a pro at finding the centre of a maze, or if you’re completely naff at directions, this is certainly an attraction not to be missed this summer. And, if you’re feeling lucky today, flick to pages 10-11 to find out how you can win a bunch of tickets! Later on in the month, we can expect to see local teams battle it out on the Ouse for charity in a bid to be crowned champion of the waters in
this years Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge. York’s music scene is also looking pretty vibrant this July too. From the York Early Music Festival to the Music Showcase Weekend at York Racecourse, there’s something to suit every music taste.
By the time this gets sent out to you, tickets may well have sold out but we also thought it worth mentioning that this month sees the best of comedy here in the city. From Jack Whitehall at York Barbican, to Russell Howard at the Grand Opera House, July is certainly going to be a busy one for York’s performance venues. As ever, York is the gift that keeps on giving. Until next month!

A Family Ticket of Four for York Maze
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL
This is a month in which you have to make at least one awkward choice. Do I go this way and do this or do I go that way and do that? Obviously, you can’t do both, so unless you have a clear vision of possible outcomes, follow my Grandmother’s advice, “When in doubt do nowt!” This creates space for circumstances to change, and sometimes making no decision is better than making a decision that turns out to be the wrong one.
LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG
Actions always speak louder than words and there are a couple of people around you who will be judging you by your actions. The temptation is to try and please everyone (which, of course, you can’t do) so the second temptation is to say, “Get lost, the lot of you.
STARSIGN OF THE MONTH
I’ll please myself.” I don’t think this will work either (not if you’re looking for a quiet life) but at the end of the day, remembering what I said about ‘actions’, this is perhaps where you must put your own interests first. Just don’t dither.
VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT
A very vibrant month for Virgos, especially for gentlemen with aims and ambitions, and the energy to go after them. Regardless of age or sex, people will be looking to you to provide leadership and a sense of direction, so this should give you plenty of opportunity to get your own way, especially in areas where in the past you’ve had to accommodate other peoples’ priorities. Now it’s your turn for a change.
LIBRA 23RD SEPT - 22ND OCT
A lovely, lucky month for a lot of Librans. For the guys, this luck pattern falls in affairs of the heart… new romances, deeper
commitments, some late-night assignations and excitement. For girls, especially singles between 20 and 40, the breaks fall in favour of new-found confidence and advancement with careers and jobs. The guys might be making some money, but I reckon the girls will be making a lot more.
SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV
Emotions run high throughout July but in a bright and positive way. You will feel a lot more confident about the future, both the short term and the long term, and you’ll feel much more in control, especially where relationships are concerned. It should be a physically “active” month, but whatever is happening here, is happening on your own terms. You’re in charge. Other people are aware of this and respond favourably.
SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV - 21ST DEC
A more peaceful month where partnerships are concerned,
both personal and professional. Compromises are found, accommodations made, and you’ll find yourself pulling forward with lovers and workmates toward common goals. Single males get a huge boost to their sexual and emotional self-confidence, vaguely between the 10th and the 20th, but there could be dangerous temptations for the ladies around the 27th.
CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN
Some money needs to be spent on home improvement or maintenance otherwise your house could start falling down around your ears. Particular attention should be paid to all things electrical. Some major shake-ups on the work scene that do not involve you directly, although there will be a knock-on effect. Money spent on self-image is a good investment and a few treats may be in order towards month’s end.

AQUARIUS 2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB
An awkward decision faces you this month and it will not be dealt with straight away. It’s a case of do you stick with the devil you know or take a chance with the devil you don’t. This principle can be applied equally to careers and business, and also affairs of the heart. Not much help from other people on this one, and if there is advice being offered it will not be objective. There’s no choice other than to trust your own intuition.
PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR
They say that patience is a virtue and throughout July, it would seem that your earlier patience is being rewarded. A lot of nice things fall into place, causing you to feel much more free and light-hearted than you have done for simply ages. Social aspects ignite new friendships, especially around the 12th to the 15th and again around the 23rd to the 24th, and single fishes looking for romance will not be disappointed by their opportunities.
ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR
A better and brighter mood throughout July than you experienced in June. This is caused by a new-found sense of financial confidence, and one way or another, it should be quite a good
money month. Promotions on the job scene generate salary increases, but there should also be payment of any monies that are owed to you, especially from long-standing debts. July 5th should be a red letter day when you receive some good news.
TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY
You should find yourself enjoying a period of calm stability this month. No sudden shocks, setbacks or surprises. You are able to focus on some new ideas, and maybe even revive a few old ones. Relationships are sound and solid, but there are times, both at the beginning and at the end of the month, when a lover or partner might need some extra emotional support. This gives you the opportunity to show your commitment.
GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN
Communication and long-distance correspondence have roles to play this month, and you must try to be clear in everything you are saying so that there can be no misunderstandings. Contrarily, you also need to listen to what people are saying to you, and if there are petitions or favours asked, it will be in your interest, both short term and long term, to respond positively. Family affairs are of key importance. Good vibrations, so enjoy.

WALKING WITH THE WANDERER
Walk information
Moor Monkton, Red House, and the Nidd and Ouse
This short stroll, very suitable for a summer’s evening, offers some of the best riverside walking close to York. There’s lots of variety. As well as the waterside stretches there are views to Nun Monkton Priory and Beningbrough Hall across the river, birds aplenty on the lagoon of the waterworks, and a quiet area of woodland with a fine show of bluebells in spring.
Is this walk for me?
This is a short and flat walk. There is only one stile to cross. There are several sections where the route can be muddy, especially leaving the water treatment works and in Redhouse Wood. The route should not be attempted when river levels are high as sections will be impassable. Cattle may be grazing on the riverside fields between Moor Monkton and Red House.
Getting there
The recommended starting point is Moor Monkton where there is roadside parking on the village street. It is also possible to start from Direction Point 4 where
limited parking space is available. Unfortunately, there are no public transport options to either starting point. Bus 22 does stop on the A59 at Moor Monkton crossroads from where it is possible to walk to either starting point. This would more than double the route mileage and timing.
Refreshments
There are no options on the route.
What to see
The riverside stretches provide attractive walking and a good habitat for wildlife. Various birds can be seen on the water including, in summer, sand martins which nest in the banks of the Ouse. Numerous bird species can be seen on the lagoon of the water treatment works. The route passes the confluence
of the Nidd with the Ouse. There are good views across the river to Nun Monkton and, slightly further downstream, Beningbrough Hall. The Red House estate contains an unusual seventeenth-century chapel. The walk traverses the full length of Redhouse Wood, an under-appreciated woodland with a variety of wildlife.
Directions
1. Walk ahead down Moor Monkton’s single street continuing until the tarmac turns sharp right at a tree, seat, and a bridleway signpost. Here, go left (ahead) through gates by a cattle grid following a track with the river Nidd down to the left. Ignore a public footpath heading right (your return route) continuing on the track

until it bends hard right. Leave the track here heading straight ahead over grass aiming just to the right of a prominent telegraph pole. Continue in the same direction soon walking with a hedge on the right and the river on the left to find a gate at the bottom of a gentle slope. Go through and walk ahead over the field to reach the river bank at the confluence of the Nidd with the Ouse.
2. Turn right following the Ouse downstream on the embankment. At gates take that to the left, as way marked, staying by the river. Continue through a further gate to arrive at a third gate giving access to the water treatment works area. Here continue alongside the river ignoring two unmarked paths heading right. The water treatment works lagoon is soon visible to the right.
3. At the end of the waterworks area do not continue on the main path by the river. Instead, about ten metres before a gate, head right on a fainter path with small trees and a ditch to the left. Follow this path as it curves along the edge of the waterworks property with the lagoon away to the right. Approaching a wooden fence veer

left dropping down into bushes to find a gate. Go through and continue on the clear path to reach a tarmac, tree-lined avenue. Turn right.
4. Where the avenue ends do not continue ahead but turn right (signpost part hidden in a tree) on another tarmac track going through metal gates and with a wood left. In about 250 metres, just before the tarmac turns right, go left on a path (yellow way mark pointing back) into the wood. Now continue straight ahead through the wood for about 750 metres on the clear grassy path ignoring all tracks off.
5. At the end of the wood go through the gate then turn immediately right to the field corner. Here turn left with the hedge right on the field edge. At the field end go through a gate and over a rickety stile immediately beyond which turn half left over the grass towards the houses of Moor Monkton. Reaching the track taken at the start of the walk follow it left to return to Moor Monkton. (If starting from Direction Point 4 turn right on reaching the track then follow the walk from “(your return route)” in Direction Point 1)
Walks are undertaken at your own risk. Due care must be taken in following the walk, particularly after poor weather. Whilst every care is taken in compiling the description, some changes may have occurred since publication. BOAT CHALLENGE RETURNS
36 teams will come together to compete on the River Ouse this month, in support of the annual York Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge. Over the past 21 years, this massive event has raised a staggering total of £1.4 million for a wide range of deserving local charities. Additional to the money raised by teams for their selected charities, the Rotary Club also select two main charities every year to support - the charities for 2023 are the Big Futures Foundation and Kyra Women’s Project. Big Futures Foundation, a local children's organisation, seeks to support young children from lowincome families and offer counselling to kids and their parents/carers to help
them build life skills, self-esteem, and stronger support systems. Meanwhile, registered charity, Kyra Women’s Project assists women of all ages by providing a variety of programmes, therapies, life skills, and events. With further funding, the charity aims to grow its services, providing more women with support by hiring additional course instructors and professional counsellors.
If you’d like to show your support at this year’s Rotary Dragon Boat Race with a donation, or if you’re just keen to know more about the event and how you can watch, please visit www. yorkrotary.co.uk/dragon-boatchallenge.
GOING ONCE, GOING TWICE…SOLD!
A sold-out, star-studded fundraising dinner will be held at the beautiful stately home, Carlton Towers this October. The charity to benefit will be the Snappy Trust, which is dedicated to maximising the personal development of children and young adults with wide-ranging disabilities, and a percentage of the funds received from the evening will also go towards
Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The organiser and Patron of the charity is David Brown BEM, recognised by Queen Elizabeth II in 2021 for his fundraising and work for the York community. Times are tough just now, so he is reaching out to anyone who might be able to donate a raffle prize or an auction lot. So if you’re an organisation that might be able to spare anything from a voucher to a spanking new car, please get in touch. The deadline for donations is the 15th of September. For more information, please email David: db1960db@gmail.com.
Ben's Book Corner
Your Local Link reader, Ben Robinson has been writing for about five years now. His creative writing has covered topics such as poetry, culture and education. Books are Ben’s passion and he’s excited to be sharing some fantastic reads with you. Here are some of his recommendations for this month…happy reading!
I’ve really been getting into reading memoirs. There is something quite magical and enticing about reading someone's story, they can take you from the grunge, underground culture of noughties NYC, to the English countryside and how it inspired them. Whatever you like to read, there is always something for you. I thought this month I’d share with you some of my favourite memoirs I have read in recent months.
‘Chaos Theory’
by Leah McSweeney
This book was a showstopper for me. McSweeney, a pioneer in women’s streetwear, details the difficulties of her childhood. From what it was like growing up in New York City, to working with some of the biggest names in fashion. This book will take you on her journey of resilience and grit, teaching you many inspiring lessons along the way.
‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’
by Jeanette McCurdy
McCurdy's debut book released rave reviews, and I agree with all of them. In her memoir, McCurdy details her career as a child actress, followed by her troubled relationship with her mum, who passed away in 2013. The book splits into before and after sections which captures her emotions perfectly. This book is a must-read!
‘This Is Going to Hurt’
by Adam Kay
If you want something to tug on those heartstrings, then this is the book for you. This is a collection of Kay’s diary entries from his medical training between 2004 to 2010. Full of tales that will have you feeling all kinds of emotions, this book is one to keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire read.

“It wasn’t always like this,” I murmured to my stepson. “In earlier days it would have been impossible to come here,” I said. He looked at me, looking across at the sands and the beach.
“Even me?” he said. I looked at him.
“Even you,” I said. “And everybody who looked anything like us.”
“Why?” he said, and I was not sure how to answer.
“I think… they were afraid of us,” I said. “Now – they seem to like us.” I paused. “Well, most of them.”
“Will my family ever be able to join us?” he said, almost to himself.
“You know that your family… we haven’t seen your family in many years. I don’t know.” I paused. “Now, remember, what I told you.” He smiled at me.
“I know, never get too close,” he said. “And you have told me what happened to your parents,” he added, but he looked at the beach and the shore and the people on it with a deep desire and I resolved to keep an eye on him.
Uncle Zack came over, moving not-too-subtly between Phil and the beach.
“How are you doing there, Phil? Enjoying the view?”
Phil grinned.
“Nice to see you, Uncle Zee,” he said. “You and Auntie Dani need to
keep clear of the beach!” I raised my eyebrows and decided not to say anything, as my brother Zack knew that Phil had said this and had caused him, Zee, just to get a rise.
Zack just nudged Phil, showing him that he was still the boss and twice the size of his step-nephew.
“Yes, we know,” he said. “There are a lot of humans out today,” he added. “They love us, but we do not want to frighten them too much… and it goes from deep to shallow very quickly here.” He smiled. “Or shallow to deep, if you are one of them.”
He stooped down and then rose up, moved quickly, so quickly, breaching the surface and letting his whole form be seen by the humans on the beach in what seemed like a crazy belly-flop. He then looked at the beach and we could all see the shock from the humans.
“See?” I said. “Sometimes they are surprised, sometimes afraid, sometimes angry. And Phil, you shouldn’t do that. It just worries them.” I paused. “It worries me, too.”
Dani gave me a gentle touch as she swam past.
“They enjoy it but you are right, we should go.”
Phil looked disappointed. He knew that he could not go close to the beach, that was far too dangerous. He knew that – although
they were not, technically, related –he wanted to be just like his Uncle Zack.
We swam away where they could not see us but I had a sneaking suspicion that the next
time we approached a shore with humans on it Phil was going to show himself and breach the surface, just to prove that he could. Calves, eh? What can you do with them?

SHORT STORY OF THE MONTH
YORK LIFE 19
Is digital fatigue giving print advertising a new lease of life?
Tech giant, Amazon might want out of the publishing industry, but the industry itself is in the midst of a resurgence.
And, despite popular narratives that print is “on its way out” or even “dead,” new surveys show that when it comes to both magazines and
books, print is very much alive and kicking.
For over 20 years, we’ve been publishing ‘Your Local Link’ magazine, which is delivered to every home and business in York and its surrounding villages. We also publish ‘The Best Pages’, which are delivered to 87,419 letterboxes in North and East Yorkshire and the ‘What’s On York Guide’, the publication that people pick up at hotels and many tourist attractions in York City Centre.
For much of our time in the print industry, we’ve had doom-mongers tell us to stop putting so much focus into our printed copies, since “digital is everything”.
In a way, the idea that digital is overtaking print among readers has always been a bit overblown.
For publishers, the total number of people who access a publication in print versus digital is only one measure. The time they spend reading can be just as important, or even more so. Surveys suggest
that many readers commit more minutes to reading print than scrolling through information online. This helps explain why you keep hearing about new, niche magazines being launched.
While some people instinctively think of print as being almost exclusively for older people, about two-thirds of adults aged 18 to 34 said they love the touch and feel of printed magazines. When we surveyed our readers, we found that they run the gamut in age, with half under 45 years old and pretty evenly split between men and women. By not giving up on print, local publishers are also keeping more people employed. Magazines provide about 55,000 jobs directly in the UK and support countless others through their support of local businesses through their advertising and marketing platforms. We’re also making sure to serve the all-too-often forgotten people who don’t have access to the internet. Print is also well positioned to take advantage of a growing phenomenon: “digital detox” time. More people are beginning to schedule time away from devices and notifications, and many of them
are looking for the look and feel of good old-fashioned reading and information material. It is also there when you need it, month in, month out.
Another reason printed advertising is growing Advertisers are showing interest, based on research about the impact of print, and how it interacts with parts of the brain.
Consumers often find magazine adverts less intrusive and say they dislike this type of advertising the least.
So don’t discount print. There are literally thousands of local magazines in the UK with hundreds of thousands of readers. And, since the demise of the Yellow Pages in print, these have become a vital and reliable resource of local information, business directory, and so much more.
The local publications you see through your letterbox, in hotels, doctors’ offices and shops have a long life ahead of them, with or without Amazon. They are a vital, local conduit between customers and businesses, ignore using them at your peril.
20 YORK LIFE 20
ASK THE EXPERT:
We hear from our resident Sports Writer and York City F. C. fan, Simon Pattinson.
Since I last wrote, it would seem that not much has changed in terms of ownership of York City. What has changed, however, is the chairman of the York City Supporters Trust, Mike Brown, stepped down as promised. Acting chair Seth Sowerby has taken the helm which to me feels like a move in the right direction - with Jim Calverley taking on more of a significant role; this is something I think will be vital for the trust moving forward. Whatever many fans have said about him, I do think he will be a major catalyst for things as the club prepares for the impending season. Best of luck to them both in their new roles in the future.
On the playing side of things, one of the biggest surprises was to see a shock return for veteran goalkeeper David Stockdale, having made 27 appearances for newly promoted Sheffield Wednesday. He stepped away from the Owls with offers on the table from League One and League Two teams but decided to roll back the years and make a comeback to the club where he made his professional debut
twenty years ago. I think many fans have followed his career since he was released by then-manager Billy McEwan. Stockdale went on to play for Fulham, Brighton and Birmingham as well as others, earning his way to call-ups to the England squad under Fabio Capello. It's fair to say that we have probably signed the best keeper in the division with his quality and experience. We've certainly been blessed with goalkeeping options over the years and spoiled with some, Nick Pope the obvious name that comes to mind. I think many were surprised that he was one of the first positions we recruited for with the way Ryan Whitley stepped up at the end of last season. In my opinion, there is no doubt that Stockdale's presence is something that he can only learn from. The competition as well as an experienced stopper training alongside him will encourage his development - although make no doubts about it, Whitley will certainly push him for the starting position. Whitley is a top keeper that can not only cement himself as City's number one but also be
a good football league keeper and hopefully beyond, as Stockdale himself went on to do. Having experience in the Premier League, part of Stockdale's duel-role is being the new head of recruitment. He will hopefully help Mike Morton build on the squad that he currently has. How the actual transfer window plays out is a different question, as I think everything feels uncertain with what seems like a non-existent budget that one can only imagine will lead to a similar season to this one that has just past. In Rugby news, things are certainly looking steady this season for the Knights. The feeling amongst fans is that it will highly unlikely there will be much of a realistic title challenge, however, performances and results will be expected. There is promise in the way the club is progressing with its plans for the future moving forward with a more youthful squad that could earn the club money as well as continuing to introduce youth academy players
into the first team. Not only have the men's team looked solid but the Valkyrie have once again been flying high with a lot of big results going their way. They seem to go from strength to strength at the moment and are looking to be one of the sides to watch out for in woman’s rugby league. It has been rumoured, as I write this, the rugby owner Clint Goodchild is interested in taking charge of the football from Glen Henderson. If this were to happen, it could be the merger that could oversee the football and rugby clubs pulling in the same direction. Let's wait to see what happens between now and the next time we speak!

We’ve reached it! 20 whole years of Your Local Link Magazine. What started as a little baby project has vastly grown over the years. We’re feeling very grateful to have received your support over the years as we simply couldn’t have done it without our loyal readers and advertisers. York is an excellent city and we’re so proud to call it our home and be able to serve its wonderful community.
To celebrate this year’s milestone birthday, we took the chance to sit down with our Managing Director, Gini Guttery about the business and its transformation over the years. This is what she had to say: What does Your Local Link mean to you? Firstly, Your Local Link has provided stable, well-paying jobs for our staff and over 90 distributors in York for 20 years now. Against all the odds we successfully launched a magazine in the heart of an international newspaper group. Secondly, we have been amazed at how many local businesses, charities and other organisations we’ve been able to help by giving them a very cost effective and
reliable way to launch and grow their organisations. The amount of customer testimonials we have had over the years is just phenomenal and makes us so proud that we have played a part in keeping York a strong and vital city and its local companies growing and thriving. What’s been your favourite memory of working here in the last 20 years? It has to be all the fun we have had in the office with our pet dogs and cats. From Poppy stealing a customer’s gloves and eating them, to trying to escape out of the window and being saved by Sarah holding on to her tail (no harm came to either!) and growling at anyone who had a hat on (?). Suzie the cat (RIP) used to help (not) design by sitting on their keyboards. Our current office pet, Maddy the gorgeous spaniel, whose waggy tail and loving hugs make any day special. Are there any exciting plans that we can look forward to in the next year of business? More of the same and a few surprises! We are always looking for ways
to help our customers be more successful so watch this space… What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given? One, attention to detail, check, check and check again. Two, treat your staff and customers as you would like to be treated and three, under promise and over deliver, simple really.

THE MAZDA OF MIRACLES
Earlier this year, it was announced that Heworth-based car dealership, Burrows Mazda, had agreed to donate a brand-new Mazda car every six months to local charity, St Leonard’s Hospice.
As well as at fundraising events, the car will be used primarily as one of the Hospice@Home vehicles, helping to support 550 people a year, and providing specialist care in the comfort of their own homes. Speaking of this generous donation from the
local car dealership, James Wainwright, Head of Fundraising at St Leonard’s Hospice, said:
“Thanks to the team at Burrows Mazda for this amazing donation. Our focus continues to be on delivering excellent care and support to all our patients, their families, and loved ones, and this would not be possible without such generous support from our community.”
On a sponsored loan, The Mazda MX-30 electric car was donated to the charity this spring, and will soon be replaced with a new vehicle so that the organisation always has the most effective model and never needs to pay to have it serviced.

Local bus operator, Reliance Motor Services have just launched a brand new, much anticipated Late Bus Service serving York to Easingwold. Starting from Friday 9th June, passengers can depart from Exhibition Square or Station Avenue as late as 10:30pm on a Friday or Saturday evening. They have also introduced some midweek evening journeys. The enhancements to bus routes, 30 and 40 will cover Skelton, Shipton, Tollerton, Alne, Easingwold, Stillington, Huby, Sutton on the Forest and Eastmoor and will no doubt save locals a fortune on taxi costs after a lovely evening in the city. At is also hoped that we can support local businesses by providing options of later travel between villages on the routes. We spoke with Hollie from Reliance Busses who commented “As a local, family-run bus operation we are keen to ensure our services are based on the requirements of
the local passengers.
A late bus service has been requested by our passengers and has been part of our future plans for a long time but the uncertainty of the pandemic had put a halt to this. We have now begun to see our passenger numbers return to pre-pandemic levels which has given us the confidence to introduce the late bus service”.
Reliance have served the local community for over 80 years across York and North Yorkshire whilst providing the much desired link between York and Easingwold also further afield including Thirsk, Northallerton, Ripon and Helmsley. If you would like to find out more about the new Late Bus Service, or view the full timetable, visit www. reliancebuses.co.uk or you can speak to one of their Customer Care Experts by calling 01904 768262.

COOL IT DOWN
Keep your home nice and cool this summer with these five handy tips.
Cotton on!
Sick of waking up all clammy? Choose bed sheets that are made from natural fibres. Breathable cotton will keep most excess moisture at bay.
Close those curtains
If your home feels like a permanent oven, try to keep the curtains closed where possible. Less direct sunlight throughout the day will mean your home will remain cooler.
Number one fan
If you have ceiling fan blades, make sure you set them to spin counterclockwise during the summer. Moving in this direction will push the
air down and in turn, create a delicious breeze. You can thank us later!
Alfresco feasts
If you have space and the means to cook outside, eliminate the need for any excess heat from the oven and cook and eat outside instead. Alternatively, using a slow cooker may decrease any heat output too.
Cool the couch
Ahh, the old leather sofa. Very comfortable, but before long you have the ordeal of peeling yourself off it. Cool your couch down by putting a lightweight throw over it. Even a natural-fibre bed sheet will do!

An Interview With Guy Thallon
If you’ve been to North Yorkshire's stately home, Castle Howard, then you’ll know that they have acres of extremely impressive grounds. With beautiful views and plenty to see, the grounds are well-kept by a dedicated team. One such member is Guy Thallon, who has recently taken on a brand new role for the estate as Head of Natural Environment. This month, we were lucky enough to catch him for a little chat.
Hi Guy! Thanks so much for coming to chat to us. Firstly, can you tell us a bit about what you do here at Castle Howard?
My role at Castle Howard is Head of Natural Environment, this was a new role for the estate when I joined last autumn and aligns the efforts of our land management functions around protecting and engaging the natural environment.
In the latest news of the local gardening world, we hear that Castle Howard has a 15-year master plan to combat climate change and improve biodiversity. What are the first steps and what are the main aims of this plan?
The 15-year master plan was developed to set out to define what the role of an estate like Castle Howard is in modern times - the combined climate and biodiversity emergencies are the greatest challenge of our
time so we need to understand how we reduce our impact dramatically and identify ways to provide a positive impact in addressing these challenges. We know we need to do this quickly and at scale but the first step is understanding what levers we can pull to have the greatest impact.
The theme surrounding this plan is Restore, Regenerate, and Revive. Is there anything that visitors coming to see the estate, can do to support this vision?
Over 250,000 visitors come to the estate each year which is a lot of journeys, teas, and minds. We're working to reduce the impact our visitors have when they're on-site and want to inspire people to see that there are novel ways to respond to these challenges. We encourage people to think about the journeys that they're making to us, we discount tickets for people coming by bicycle or public transport and we're setting up for electric vehicles as well as offsetting through tree planting. We’ve also heard Castle Howard will be using the ‘Natural Capital Baseline’ to monitor various factors of the estate grounds. Can you tell us a bit more about this and what it does?
Natural Capital describes the building blocks of our natural environment, it describes the
basic units of a landscape such as hedges, fields, and ponds. We've mapped these to a really high level of detail and identified 6093 different habitat units across the estate, this becomes our baseline from which we can plan alternative management strategies and measure progress.
And finally, as Head of Natural Environment, we’re curious to pick your brains. What’s the best eco-friendly tip you’ve ever been given?!
There are a thousand tips for changing your lifestyle to reduce your impact but one of the biggest changes you can make in your diet and reducing the amount of meat you're eating in favour of things like beans, pulses, and mushrooms. You don't need to go 100% vegetarian or vegan (there's lots of sustainable meat available locally) but having a majority veg-based diet in the week it's better for you and the planet. So the tip is "stop to think about what you're eating".
How does your garden grow?
If you've got green-fingers or you're looking for garden inspo, you absolutely won't want to miss the opportunity to see The Nursery, which is lovingly ran by our columnist, Tony Chalcraft, as part of the National Open Garden Scheme. Originally a suburban nursery, Tony and Jane now have a productive one-acre organic garden with over 100 fruit trees, as well as a 20m greenhouse. If you’re curious to have a look, the garden is open between the 16th-18th of July between 1-6pm. Admission costs £4 for adults. Refreshments and homemade teas are also available. All proceeds will go towards supporting National Garden Scheme charities and Oxfam. For more information, please visit findagarden. findagarden.ngs.org.uk/ garden/20317/the-nursery

FLORENCE FENNEL
Many gardeners will have never tried growing Florence fennel. More in vogue than in the past, it’s often praised and promoted in cooking magazines and websites. On the plot, however, it remains a rarity usually regarded as too exotic or just ‘difficult’. While it’s true Florence fennel isn’t the easiest crop to grow, its cultivation isn’t as hard as sometimes supposed, especially if it’s got going at the right time of year, which is now: that is late June into July.
Before looking at growing Florence fennel let's clear up any confusion there may be about the difference between it and ‘ordinary’ fennel. Both have ferny foliage, an aniseed flavour and share the Latin name Foeniculum vulgare. Foeniculxum is a member of the Apiaceae family, meaning fennel is related to other members of this large group, which includes carrots, but also herbs such as dill. It’s as a herb, and sometimes as an ornamental plant, that fennel is perhaps best known. The herb type of fennel can make a tall plant, towering up to two metres in height. It is grown for its leaves and stalks. Florence fennel, which has the suffix azoricum added to its Latin name is, or should be a much less lanky. It’s cultivated not for leaves but a ‘bulb’ which forms just above ground level
beneath a leafy tuffet. The ‘bulb’ is the swollen base of the plant’s stem and it is getting this to form that is the key to successfully growing this crop.
If not grown carefully Florence fennel will fail to produce a bulb. Instead, it will bolt, that is run to seed, so that the plant has elongated growth that lacks bulk at the base. Anything salvageable from spindly, seeded, plants is likely to be stringy in texture. There are usually two reasons for this propensity to bolting. The first is lack of moisture. Florence fennel requires copious watering; drying out and the resultant check to growth must be avoided. The second, and more often overlooked reason, is starting Florence fennel too soon in the season. Cold conditions are guaranteed to induce bolting. For this reason, it is best, despite some books and websites that suggest starting Florence fennel in April, to wait until mid-summer to sow and plant.
This leads us to the question of whether Florence fennel is best sown direct in the soil or planted out from seedlings grown under cover. Over the years I’ve experimented with both methods. When sowing into soil I don’t put the seeds in before late June. If conditions
are dry I make sure to water the drill (sowing groove) as rapid germination is essential if the bulbs are to have enough time to swell to a good size. A late June or early July sowing usually gives a harvestable crop by mid to late September. With the second method, planting out, I sow seeds into small pots under cover from early June. The young seedlings are carefully transplanted outside three or so weeks later. Planting out has the advantage of giving an earlier crop but does, in my experience, increase the chance of plants bolting. It’s probably transplanting, however delicately carried out, that prompts this: it can’t be emphasised too much that any ‘check’, whether root disturbance, drought, or cold is likely to result in a poor or useless crop. Florence fennel’s may be a tad tricky but don’t let this put you off giving it a try. There is a lot to be said about this plant. As well as its culinary virtues and the sense of achievement gained from the successful growth of one of the more challenging vegetables, this is a crop that can be started relatively late in the season, slotted in after anything harvested by mid-summer. Even if some crops run to seed, there’s a statuesque
Tony Chalcraft
quality to the plants which can make a metre or more. And even when bolted it’s still possible to use the leaves and stems as flavouring, as with fennel grown as an herb.

FIVE QUESTIONS EVERY PARENT SHOULD ASK BEFORE CHOOSING A NURSERY FOR THEIR CHILD
Questions. Sometimes they’re awkward to ask, but there’s no such thing as a silly question, especially when it comes to choosing the right nursery for your child. Asking these questions can help you gain a better understanding of the nursery's approach to education, the qualifications of the staff, the daily routine, and the policies on health. All of these factors, when considered, will help you to make an informed decision about which nursery is the best fit for your child. Here are a few pointers to get you started!
What is the nursery's approach to early childhood education, and how is it supported in the classroom?
Ask the nursery staff about their approach to early childhood education. Do they have a curriculum or lesson plans, or do they follow a more child-led approach? Have a look into what types of activities and materials are provided to support learning and development and how these are incorporated into the classroom. Understanding the nursery's approach to early
childhood education can help you decide if the system aligns with your own beliefs for your child's education and gives an insight into the types of opportunities your child may receive.
What is the staff-to-child ratio, and what are the qualifications and experience of the staff members? The current regulations concerning child-to-staff ratios in England can be found in the EYFS Statutory Framework and is accessible online. Most nurseries require their staff to hold at least an NVQ Level 2 Certificate in Childcare and an NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Education and Care. However, each nursery is different, so it is worth investigating this.
What is the daily routine like, and how is it structured to meet the developmental needs of young children?
Typical care routines of a young child range from nappy changing, feeding, dressing, play-based activities, and napping. These basic routines are necessary to your child’s health and will aid their overall development.
What is the nursery's policy on health and safety, including illness, medication, and emergency procedures? Make sure the nursery policy on health and safety contains instructions for handling illnesses, medications, and emergencies. The policy should include instructions on how to administer medication, prevent the spread of infections, and deal with emergencies as well as how the nursery will handle any accidents or illnesses that arise on the property. The policy should also mandate that every employee gain a current First Aid certificate, specialising in paediatric care. What is the process for communication with parents, and how are updates and progress reports shared? Effective communication is key to supporting your child’s success. Email, phone conversations, inperson visits, and online forums are just a few of the ways nursery staff can get in touch with parents. Teachers and practitioners should
also regularly update parents on their child's academic performance, behaviour, and social-emotional development to make sure they are aware of their progress. So, if you’re looking for a nursery for your little one in the near future, you can find plenty of great organisations within the featured ads on this page. Good luck!

REVIEW: THE POTIONS CAULDRON GROUP
York is known for many things but holds a particular place in the hearts of those who adore all things magic. From Harry Potter to hidden horrors, there’s certainly something mystical about this city. In the last few years, The Potions Cauldron Group have created several magical experiences across the city of York and recently, we sent our resident muggle, Mim to experience them:
I was delighted when York’s latest Wizardly addition, The Hole in the Wand opened its doors at Coppergate in May 2021, offering locals and visitors alike the chance to play a mystical, competitive game for everyone to enjoy.
Walking into the building, we are greeted straight away and are given step-by-step instructions by their friendly, well-dressed staff. Adorned in their Hole in the Wand waistcoats and shirts, the staff certainly set off the whole feel of this experience. We then enter a lovely gift shop with potion drinks and gifts, including some cuddly toys and treats for your kids or even to treat yourself!
We also notice the Wizard Tavern where you can go sit down, and sample some lovely cauldron
cake and potions.
After the short walk through the gift shop, we are then given the choice of a feather quill and a scorecard, in preparation for the game. The scorecard even has a riddle to solve, so you get the chance to win another game in the future! We pick our wandstyle golf clubs and head for the first hole.
Along the way, there are plenty of magical props that make you feel like you’re in another world, including medieval pictures on the wall, complete with a mystical dark corridor that adds a bit of spook to the scene. I get to the ninth hole and add to the fun as I lose my ball through the fireplace exit. Every mini-golfer knows, there’s always going to be one dodgy shot!
We come to the end of the game and are given a magicalthemed drink. Drinks are selected depending on how well you played, from ‘Tears of a Wizard’ to ‘Serpent’s Venom’. And, if you’re feeling particularly victorious, you also get the choice to have a picture taken at the end to remind you of this fantastic experience.
After visiting the Hole in the Wand we walk up to The Potions Cauldron for our potion experience
on the Shambles. The shop has a lovely choice of potions and cauldrons to purchase before you walk into a dark spooky room. Receiving a refreshing drink - either soft for children or alcoholic for adults - visitors have a chat with their cauldron expert, who lets you know that ghosts have been seen in this really old building and it does give you a haunted feel as you are taken on a journey with lots of hidden surprises in the room (I won’t give that part away though!) Finally, we then choose what drink we want to make, using ingredients such as popping candy and a flashing ice cube, which the kids seem to thoroughly enjoy. The drinks are tasty and this little touch adds to the experience of the day. The entire magical experience with The Potions Cauldron Group didn’t disappoint. It was full of laughter and fun and every room is thought out to play with your imagination. I would recommend this for a good day out in York, especially for families or days out with friends.

Review: Middletons Afternoon Tea
Originating in the nineteenth century, the humble afternoon tea goes way back. Since then, this little luxury has become a staple of British culture. Served across cafes and restaurants across this city and beyond, afternoon tea is a pastime that, let’s face it, will never go out of style. Created by their in-house pastry chef, Middletons Hotel offers an afternoon tea daily, served to guests and residents of York alike. Over to Skeldergate, our writer, Emily heads to Middletons Hotel to taste test the experience: Walking up the path to the reception area, the historic building sits nestled snuggly in between flower bushes and shrubbery, and soon we approach a relaxed terrace
area. This looks like the perfect summer spot to enjoy a leisurely drink or enjoy an alfresco afternoon in the city. Complete with a tranquil waterfall, the site of Middletons is a site of calm.
My guests and I are greeted and directed to the restaurant area where our table for three is already set. We’re offered tea and coffee by an attentive staff member and as we sit and wait for our refreshments, we take the opportunity to relax in our seats and have a natter. Soon, our hot refreshments arrive, along with a glass of Prosecco. If you’re not a fan of bubbly, Middletons caters to all, offering three-afternoon tea packages: traditional, sparkling,
and champagne. However, if you’re celebrating a special occasion, it makes for a lovely extra touch. We’re not left waiting long before the afternoon tea arrives in a caged cake stand. Neatly presented and sumptuous, there’s plenty of food and if you’re an avid afternoon tea fan, then you’ll know that the most difficult part is knowing where on earth to start!?
With a selection of traditional finger sandwiches, from cream cheese, chive, and smoked salmon filling, to cheese and pickle, there’s also a homemade sausage roll encased in buttery pastry. The middle tier is layered with golden fruit scones, clotted cream, and mini jars of jam and the top tier of the stand
features a selection of dainty cakes: red velvet, a lemon tart and a mini millefoglie.
Left to chat and graze at our leisure, the attentive staff do come to check on us halfway through offering a refill of hot refreshments. Admitting defeat by cake, I eventually ask for the remainder to be boxed up for me to take home, to which the staff kindly oblige. With stomachs fully satisfied and the sun shining, this has certainly been a relaxing way to spend an afternoon in York.

A SERVICE WITH CARE
Over recent months we have had the pleasure of assisting several clients who have never used a travel agent in recent years and, in some cases, never at all. One question we are asked is what are the benefits of using Savannah Travel.
Firstly, we are an experienced team of advisors and I personally have spent almost 22 years booking not only package holidays but also creating fully tailor-made itineraries encompassing UK breaks, cruises, adventure travel or that first family holiday.
Secondly, all those years ago when I was a trainee, we had a ‘traveller's right to know’ policy, long before Tripadvisor was around, we had our trusted annual review books which
we would check for independent reviews on properties and resorts. This is something I still think back to and we will always take time to listen to your likes and dislikes. I like to take on board your specific requirements such as mobility or dietary and what you like to do on holiday before we start looking for the trip for you. We will use this insight to make recommendations to help you get the most out of your well-deserved break.
Thirdly the huge range of suppliers we work with means we can create your holiday the way you want it at a competitive price whilst b fully financially protected. Many of the suppliers we work with are "trade only" which means that without speaking to us their product would
be unavailable to you direct. We are independent, without ties, and will never directionally sell to a specific company, we will always discuss the options available. Finally, we are on hand when you need us. This has been carried out on a couple of separate occasions in the past month where, due to strikes and the effects of forest fires in North America, flights have been cancelled at the last minute. Clients have put a call into our emergency line, which goes directly to a member of the Savannah Travel team, in the early hours of the morning when our clients have been able to access little information in the airport. Instead of trying to assist a flight full of passengers, our clients
TRAVEL EXPERT Kerry Lakey
are our priority and we have managed to focus on overnight arrangements where necessary and the rescheduling of onward travel, taking the stress away from clients and making sure they had all the required information. No matter whether you are considering a London theatre break, a river cruise on the Danube, a family break in Mallorca or a fully tailor-made itinerary your holiday is as important to us as it is to you and we look forward to assisting with your plans.
If you would like a brief chat or to arrange an appointment at our office at 88 Main Street, Fulford call us today on 01904 623444, we look forward to hearing from you.
