Our time in the sun By ‘eck… it’s warm, eh? June is the time of year when we in York (and the rest of the country, we suppose) can enjoy spending some outdoors time without wearing a waterproof, fur-lined coat. It’s also a good time of year to think of Australians, who are currently experiencing the southern hemisphere’s winter, and laugh. Ha! Your turn to be cold, “mate”. Actually, it’s probably still pretty warm over there. Oh well. Hemispherical rivalries aside, we’ve put together an issue that will help you get out and about in the sunshine this month, from the final part of our river-side treasure hunt, to a Time Travel feature that encourages you to wonder along disused railway lines. It’s nicer than it sounds, honest. But we’ve also catered for those of us who prefer the indoors, despite the glorious weather. If you’re hoping to spend lots of time inside this month,
how about doing so in a really big and impressive building? The York Minster Mystery Plays are taking place throughout the month, transforming the cathedral’s nave into a huge theatre. Look at the front cover; moody, eh? Wasn’t that bloke in the middle on Game of Thrones? And of course, the very best thing to do indoors is sleep, and we can help in that department, too. Fancy a brand new bed? Fancy a brand new TWO GRAND bed? Thanks to Rodgers of York, we’re giving away a luxurious Mammoth bed, up to the RRP of £2000! Turn to our Competition pages (which are pretty jam-packed this month) to find out more. Imagine winning that. You could kiss your summer, in the very best and most comfortable way, goodnight. Other that all that… how are you?

The mysTery maChine The big news for this month is that the Mystery Plays are back… on a very grand scale. These trains are reeeeeeaaaaaaly late
This issue’s Time Travel feature, where we take a casual look back at the past, may disappoint readers who are currently awaiting the 10.16am train to Stamford Bridge. That’s because it stopped running in 1965, along with direct services to Layerthorpe Station and Selby (although that might be a relief to many!). That is because we’ve been researching York’s lost railway lines, and taking a wander along what is left of them. Ever noticed a strange straight line running through the housing estates and retail parks of Huntington? We have the answer.

our Treasure Hunt this issue, the third in a series of three taking you along the city-centre edges of the River Ouse, consider this: where does all that water come from? We’re sure the clever clogs amongst you are now piping up with ‘by Great Ouseburn where Ouse Gill Beck joins the River Ure’, but consider this: where does THAT water come from? Whatever your answer to that is, you’ll eventually arrive at ‘from rain’, which comes from the sea, which is what the River Ouse is flowing toward anyway. It’s a great big watery cycle, never ending, always flowing. So enjoy reading names on drain covers, and looking for clues amongst the bird poo. Ha.

THE HOTLIST IS VERY HOT INDEED! Our Events Hotlist, which picks out some of the best events taking place in and around our gorgeous city, is so hot that the surrounding pages have complained. The Health & Beauty section said that the increase in temperature was making it’s make up run and it’s carefully straightened hair to fizz, while the regular events section on the other side was whining that it had developed unsightly sweat patches as a result, and they were hampering it’s efforts to chat up the Food & Drink section (don’t get us started – those two are like Ross and Rachel from friends; on again, off again!). We can’t really blame them all though; it is a piping hot Hotlist. Check it out yourself to see what’s cracking in June. Wear gloves, mind!

and life in general
as seen By raChel ragg
I have a confession. It's a bad one. I am in the throes of a massive, mindblowing, spectacular love affair. With York. I recently spent eight weeks in exile in (whisper it) South Yorkshire. And it was only then that I realised how much I couldn't bear to live without York.
The fact is: York is simply the best city in the world. Never mind Prague, Barcelona, Sydney or Fake (i.e. New) York: Real York is the only place to be. Here's why.
1.
iT's eduCaTional. No schoolchild in York needs a Biology textbook when they can walk down Micklegate at the weekend. Never mind PSHE videos of stick-people engaged in bedtime activities: they can see the real thing for themselves. Yes, children, real-life phalluses are three feet long and filled with helium. And yes, it's perfectly normal to stagger around with your trousers down on a Saturday night.
2.
iT saves you money. As it's quicker to walk everywhere, you can just sell your car and invest in one pair of nice sensible trainers. All your financial problems solved in one fell swoop.
3.
iT keeps you Thin. And not just because of all the
MEMORIALS
walking. The air smells of chocolate, so you don't need to eat it. Result!
4.
iT eXerCises your lungs. It's impossible to do all that walking around York without encountering at least five people you know, and talking to them at great length.
5.
iT keeps you awake. Because encountering all those people invariably means going for coffee. And more coffee. Then tea. Indeed, it is possible to slide gently from breakfast to coffee to lunch to afternoon tea in the course of a fiveminute trip to buy an egg-slicer from Barnitt's.
6.
iT's a good plaCe To ConCuss yourself wiTh a kilner Jar. Not that I would ever be daft enough to do such a thing during a supper party, obviously - but if I were, I would be grateful for the hospital where the waiting time in A&E is only a couple of hours
(thereby beating the Leeds General Infirmary - where you can expect to wait for an entire lifetime - into the proverbial cocked hat).
7.
iT Builds resilienCe. Floods? What floods? That's not the Ouse in my cellar: it's just a little puddle. And I always fancied swimming to Waitrose.
8.
iT enaBles you To Be a nosey parker in oTher people’s houses. It’s called York Open Studios, but we all know we just want to indulge in a bit of house porn. It’s like going on Rightmove, only it’s even better because it’s in real life and you get to touch as well as look.

22ND MAY - 21ST JUN
Probably too many ideas and options cluttering up your mind at the moment, so be methodical in sorting out your priorities, then do your best to tackle one job at a time. While I wouldn’t describe this as being an excitingly romantic month, it is a good time for building bricks and laying down foundation stones that keep relationships safe and sound. A partner or spouse will respond favourably to these overtures. The mood of restlessness prevalent in April does not subside in May – indeed in many
sagiT L to R: Bear Grylls, Marilyn Monroe, Prince, Queen Victoria
ways it gets a lot stronger, pushing you into actually doing something instead of just talking (or dreaming) about it. Don’t be afraid to take the lead, for others will follow! The 5th, 6th and 19th are particularly thoughtful days when you assess your achievements with a mixed degree of pride and nostalgia for days gone by, but it is also at this time that you will acquire a clearer vision of your own mind and long term future. Also around June 5th there should be at least one important family reunion.

Behind every successful woman there’s a man who is surprised, and certainly one of these roles sits upon your shoulders this month! Ladies are likely to make career gains in the period between the 8th and the 22nd but don’t be surprised to find a misogynistic response from male associates. A warmer emotional period in the very last days of the month.
Social aspects are very bright during the first week, slowing down a bit between the 8th and the 15th. Quite a romantic buzz developing between the 15th and the 22nd, while the last ten days of June are focused on careers, job prospects and possible promotions. You’ll be looking for extra income – maybe even a second income? Seek and find!
A bit of a moody month and a time during which you may have no choice other than to change carefully made plans. The 8th / 12th sees you washing your hands of a long standing problem and from the 13th onwards you’ll be inclined to follow your head in all things. Your heart might not like it, but your head knows what it’s doing and why.
If you’re in a relationship you will come to the conclusion that it must change if it is to survive. If you’re not in a relationship, then it becomes clear that you need to change some of your attitudes and priorities if you want to find one. People are waiting to please you, but you must tell them what you need and give them what they want.

If a decision is taken out of your hands, be thankful for it, because that’s one less decision you have to make for yourself! Travel plans are under discussion, and you’ll need to examine budgets carefully. A positive month for relationships – improving old ones and finding new ones. Good vibes on the work scene with a bit more cash heading for the kitty.

suspense… will something work out or won’t it? Don’t hang around waiting to find out, but make yourself busy with other things, and take a broad and long term look at lifestyle and your life ambitions. Anything to do with property seems important at this time and there are strong travel aspects prevailing on the 14th/15th/16th.
pisCes 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR This is a time wherein you’re likely to find a new sense of purpose and direction and perhaps to your surprise, where situations and circumstances fall into place to give you a green light and a clear run. Be flexible with your plans; it’s fine to have some good ideas, but don’t chisel them out of stone.

aries 21ST MAR - 20TH APR There will be some tension in family relationships during the first and fourth weeks of the month when other people from a different generation try to tell you what’s best for you. How little they know! There’s a softer period between the 8th - 22nd when a little bit of boredom and familiarity with old routines will provide a calmer atmosphere. 21ST APR -
Taurus 21ST MAY
A quiet revolution takes place in the House of Taurus. Instead of pushing snowballs up a hill, you’ll relax into a mood of philosophical acceptance and be content to go with the flow. friends Everybody... ‘I’ll be there for you; when the rain starts to fall! I’ll be there for you...’ Aww, who misses the TV show Friends? It was about a group of friends (appropriately) who hung out, helped each other, and generally cracked wise. But not everyone has the power of a script writer to make sure they meet like minded people – in the real world we have to get out there and say hello to a stranger. York IVC is a social club filled with potential ‘Friends’ and they are all aching to meet you. The group takes part in nights out, social meets, and regular events like quizzes. If you would like to know more, and to get along to the next meet yourself, visit www.yorkivc.club
Join The CluB Team Looking for an exciting new challenge; one which involves meeting great new people AND getting out and about? The MS Society York are keen for dedicated volunteers to apply for a very special and crucial role - the mini bus driver! A clean driving license is a must (no, washing it won't help), as well as being over 21 and having had at least two years of driving experience. If you snag the job you'll have your expenses paid and get the chance to take a great bunch of folks on adventures. All the training you'll need will be provided, so what are you waiting for? Oh yeah... call 758577.

Celebrating 30 years of helping local residents, Haxby Helpers now need some help themselves. Set up to lend a hand to those who need it in the Haxby and Wigginton area – be it to pick up a prescription, help with some heavy lifting, or offer a lift somewhere – the group of dedicated volunteers now needs some fresh blood. No member of Haxby Helpers is ever paid for their time, but helping out in the community, as well as meeting some new friends, will be reward enough. If you would like to add your name to the list of helpful bods, who are never asked to do more than one job each week, call the team on 750266.

Being diagnosed with breast cancer is a devastating thing to happen. Fortunately, here in York, no woman has to go through it alone, especially after meeting some new friends. Breast Friends York is a friendly and informal group of ladies with breast cancer diagnoses who meet twice a month to support each other and have fun. On 6th June the group is meeting at the Marriott Hotel on Tadcaster Road for a special lingerie evening with Sue Cooper, the owner of The Bra Clinic. JEaloUS FriEnD One of my good friends has recently become really controlling and jealous with me. If I hang out with other people she gets annoyed and asks why I didn’t invite her. She often tries to peer pressure me into drinking when I don’t want to. She can be really fun to be around but how can I tell her I need my own space? Kirsty, Osbaldwick Kirsty this isn’t a healthy relationship. A good friend would never try and pressure you to drink, nor would they think they could have a go at you
when you see other people. It almost sounds like you’ve got a jealous partner. You need to tell her that this is an unacceptable way for her to treat you. If she wants to remain friends with you then she’s going to need to cool down big style. Never do anything you don’t want to and don’t be put off seeing your other friends. I hope you stand your ground on this one. Nobody needs a friend like that! Think of it as a life lesson for her, she will never grow up if you allow this to continue. It will do you, and her, no good in the long run.

SticKY SitUation Dear Daphne, I've been with my partner for quite a while now; we were on and off until a few years ago. We now have an adopted daughter and are doing quite well. The only issue in my life is a friend who is getting a bit too close with me. I did have a one night stand with her years ago when I got very drunk (and wasn't with my current partner). The thing is this friend is a bit too clingy, she keeps inviting herself over and coming on our days out - my daughter sees her as this big sister and likes her, but I can clearly tell my partner isn't too happy about it. What should I do? Gerald, Huntington Firstly Gerald, I think it’s good that you’ve realised that she’s a little bit too close for comfort. It seems like you care about your partner and are invested in the relationship. The friendship line was clearly blurred once upon a time, and now you need
to reaffirm that this is just a friendship and your family needs its’ own space. Have you and your partner had a conversation about this? It’s worth talking things through with her; once she knows your intentions, it should put her mind to rest. Your daughter is an important factor in this too; breaking off all ties would be unfair on her so this needs to be a steady decline in relationship instead of a clean break. In an ideal world you would be able to have a grown up conversation with your friend, explaining that although you value her friendship – there needs to be a bit of distance created. If you’re not feeling too brave and are worried it would upset her, you could try and avoid making any regular plans with her until she hopefully gets the message… probably not the best method, but definitely the easiest. If she doesn’t take the hint then she is just using her friendship with your daughter to stay close to you. At this point put your priorities in order – your daughter and partner being first on the list. Brace yourself for the hard conversation and move on.

Shopaholic Daphne, I’ve got myself into a bit of a financial mess due to my love of shopping. I can’t stop myself – if there’s a new shop opening I’ve got to go and buy something. When I feel down the best thing to cheer me up is a spot of retail therapy. It wasn’t too bad at the start but I’m now in £3000 worth of debt in overdrafts, credit cards and store cards – I can just about keep up with the repayments but I feel like a ticking time bomb. Angie, Acomb Oh no! Angie this isn’t a great situation to be in. I too am fond of the old retail
therapy and have found myself over spending. My first step of advice for you is to get yourself on the citizens advice website (www.citizensadvice. org.uk) or you can call 0300 330 1313. You’ll be able to work out how serious your debt is, and start to deal with it effectively. My next step of advice is for you to sit yourself down and think about if all this shopping is worth the amount of stress it must be causing you. Start by selling some of the things you have bought, take a certain amount of cash out of your bank a week that you can afford and don’t let yourself access any of the cards you’ve been using. Cut them up if you have to. It’s worth telling a friend or family member too so that they can try and support you. I hope you can find your inner strength and remain vigilant Good luck!

this one, situated north of the city, you'll need to get creative. The York to Beverley Line was built in 1847, coming off of the York-Scarborough line near New Earswick. Due to suburban expansion around New Earswick and Huntington, nearly all of the old track line has been built upon, but there exists several tantalising clues to it's 120 year history.
THIS MONTH: The losT railways Travel back in time 100 years and ask the average person on the street what is the best way to get around is, and they’d probably say by train. It’s true that in the past century and a half our city had a greater dependency on the railways, and that legacy has left a permanent physical mark on York... it’s just you might not have noticed all of it. This month we’re exploring three of York’s lost railways lines , all of which can still be (kinda) travelled today. (then) Rowntrees factory, running to Layerthorpe), and then becoming the Derwent Valley Light Railway (which went all the way to Selby).
Cyclist? Chances are you've travelled along the route of this former railway. The cycle path that now runs from the Nestle factory all the way to Osbaldwick was once a couple of railway lines; the Foss Island Branch Line (breaking from the main York-Scarborough line by the
Although most of the traffic of the Foss Island line was used to ferry cargo (and workers) to the huge Rowntrees factory, it also connected to the freight depots of Foss Island Road and the power station and refuse incinerator that used to occupy that site (ever wondered what that massive chimney by Morrisons was for?). It was opened in 1880 and allowed Rowntrees workers from as far south as Doncaster to commute directly to the factory.
Uniquely the whole line was privately owned, and therefore was never nationalised, allowing it to survive all the way until the 1980s. The section of the line that ran from Layerthorpe Station to Skipworth Common was known as 'The Blackberry Line' as passenger trips to pick the blackberries were often scheduled. How nice. And hey, if you fancy a train ride on the line, a small section is still maintained at the Yorkshire Museum of Farming!
Whereas the previous disused railway line can still be mostly traversed, for
Go to Google Maps and search for Monks Cross. Notice anything about the landscape? The northern side of the retail area is completely hemmed in by a suspicious straight line which, if you follow it with your eye to the left, curves around through Huntington, lines up with Link Road to News Earswick, then follows the line of a short cycle path to meet up with the existing York-Scarborough line. In its heyday this line was bustling with passengers from York, via Market Weighton, to Beverley.

This is one of the classic railway lines that saw it's end in the 1960s. Featured in the Beeching Report of 1963, the York to Beverley Line was found to be running at a great loss and was finally closed in 1965. This left the likes of Stamford Bridge and Pocklington without a railway station for good. However... since 2004 the reopening of the line has been discussed, and between 2011 and 2013 housing developed on the site of the route was halted. Watch this space.
Fancy a walk from the Sun to Pluto? Before you climb into your space ship, all you need is to get to Askham Bar Tesco with a bike or a sturdy pair of boots. This third and final disused railway line is unique because what has been done to it since it closed in
1989. Look back at Google Maps at the aforementioned Tesco, and you might notice a curve in the landscape from the existing railway line. Follow it and it will take you all the way to Riccall – a route which is now a major cycle path and also a scale model of the solar system! What was originally part of the East Coast Mainline before the route was diverted away from Selby and rerouted to the other side of the River Ouse, is now a seven mile, mostly straight, cycle path. Entering by the rather secretive entrance near to York College you'll soon encounter a scale model of the Sun. After that, relative to the scale of the planets themselves, you'll pass by all the other inhabitants of our system, ending in Pluto which is just half a centimetre across... seven miles from the sun! No wonder it took that New Horizons probe a while to get there.

FESTIVAL GUIDE This month Krystal gives us her pick of the best festivals to hit up in 2016 The festivals just keep on coming, and they get better and better. long gone are the days of a simple but decent line up and some beers. now you can get gourmet food, cinemas, comedy stages, head line stages, alternative music stages, luxury camping, normal camping, tipi camping... There’s a weekend for everyone who wants to throw on some wellies and forget about their day to day responsibilities alongside great music. so without further ado; my pick of the festivals i want to hit up in 2016...
Isle of Wight Festival
Y Not festival
Isle of Wight festival is basically massive now. It’s known far and wide for its monster line-ups and impressive artwork – the posters are always top notch. There’s something about hopping on a ferry to another island that makes you feel like you’re having a proper holiday. From the 9th – 12th June the sleepy island will come alive with sounds from Stereophonics, Queen ft. Adam Lambert, The Who, Iggy Pop (so excited to see him) and York’s home grown favourites, Hello Operator. Camping comes as standard with the weekend ticket, but those looking to have a luxury experience can choose from tipis, pre pitched tents, or luxury glamping. Keep an eye out for up and coming band, Bang Bang Romeo – you have my word you’ll love their dark and dirty sound. Tickets and information are available from www.isleofwightfestival.com.
Set in the glorious Peak District, this medium sized festival doesn’t compromise on line-up. This year guests can watch Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Catfish and The Bottlemen, Madness, and up and coming band, Blossoms. I should stress that this is simply a handful of the amazing acts playing over the weekend of the 29th July. The festival prides itself on local ales and ciders, alongside a selection of decent food. Y Not has gone from strength to strength over the years yet still retains a modest ticket price of £99 - yes really! The grass roots festival is still run by the same organisers that originally started it too. 29th – 31st July Tickets and information available from www.ynotfestivals.co.uk

We couldn’t forget York’s very own Apollo festival which will take place on 25th June at York Sports Club, Shipton Road. The family friendly festival promises to be as good as ever with plenty of onsite entertainment for the kids, local up and coming bands, well known bands and plenty of food and drink stalls. For more information visit www.apollofestival.co.uk
Leeds festival The festival next door, run by Festival republic, is arguably one of the best in the world for indie rock n roll music lovers. A personal favourite of mine – I cringe if I miss a year. This year they’ve gone and done it again featuring five headliners over the three days who are, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Foals, Biffy Clyro, Disclosure
and Fall Out Boy. As you may have come to expect the list of other acts is impressive to say the least. Leeds Festival is only a stone’s throw away and sits in the lovely Bramham Park. The festival runs over the August Bank Holiday weekend from 26th – 28th august. For tickets and information visit www.leedsfestival.com

Lowlands festival If your budget is a little bigger and you fancy somewhere oversees then Lowlands Festival could be a contender. The festival is based in The Netherlands and features acts such as The Last Shadow Puppets, Muse and Sum 41. The environmentally friendly festival runs from the 19th – 21st august. For more information visit www.lowlands.nl – yes you will need google translate for some of the pages.
Hello Operator update From Tattoo Fixers to Hollyoaks, it’s becoming common place for my friends to tell me they’ve heard Hello Operator on TV. It was bizarre at first but weirdly, I’m actually getting used to it. The lads have now been song writing with The Libertines’ very own Carl Barrat, made BBC Radio 1’s track of the week and are looking forward to playing Isle of Wight festival - no I didn’t get a free ticket :(
They’re currently in the studio recording their next single - which you will all get to hear soon. In the meantime I’m sat at home getting jealous of all the cool places Pete is getting to go and wishing I had pursued my singing career. I’ve got the voice of an angel, I swear. Although I haven’t been asked to do any backing vocals yet, which is weird...

SPORT REPORT with Dan Tait
Summer of sport
Each month Dan delivers his thoughts on local, national, and international sporting clashes. Pray silence.
Aside from the impressive form of York City Knights, Bootham Crescent doesn’t tend to have much positivity around it at the minute. That is unless you are part of the All Saints U16 Girls County Cup team who won the trophy for a second successive year at the home of York City Football Club. A 4-1 victory over Harrogate school, St John Fisher, sounds comfortable, but All Saints showed great resilience in coming from a goal down; and in some style as Ellie
Rankeillor hit a 35 yard rocket for the equaliser. A debt of gratitude was owed to super keeper Lauryn Gilbank to keep the game 1-1 at half-time but a double from the dangerous Tehila Ndhlovu swung the game in All Saints favour. A real team effort kept Fisher at bay with tenacious tackling from Emelia Winteringham and exciting wing play from Lois Waddington, before Rankeillor put the game beyond doubt with her second goal. Victorious coach Dave Gibson
said of the victory, “This side has incredibly remained unbeaten for two years since they were formed and included three students from the year below, which makes it an even bigger achievement. On route to the final they beat sides 6-0, 5-0 and 6-1. Everyone at the school is extremely proud of the successes these girls have accomplished and look forward to the school’s participation in the English Schools National Championships next year”. Well done to all!
Whilst the summer months are usually spent mourning the loss of the football season, hopefully now we can all turn our attention to the exciting sporting summer. We have the European Championships, Yorkshire Cricket Club attempting a third successive title win, and of course the Olympic Games. Recently I finally got round to watching the Eddie Izzard South Africa documentary where he ran an incredible 27 marathons in 27 days. It was one of those programmes on the Sky planner (wedged in-between the wife’s series links of ‘Say yes to the dress’ and my daughter’s ‘Ra Ra the Noisy Lion’) that saved a rainy day. How inspirational, I thought, as I pondered a future marathon (although my brisk walk upstairs to get my phone resulted in a stich, so I’ll stick to watching sport). Also, I read that in America a cross country student runner in Pennsylvania accidentally ran a marathon when he took the wrong turning on his half-marathon course!

I don’t think that in my 24 years of watching competitive sport I have ever seen anything like Leicester City’s Premier League win. I still think someone is going to catch them, even though the league has finished. Whilst Leicester undoubtedly have some quality players in their ranks, man for man they should have come way below the big guns, so it was a victory for hard work and team spirit; something that unfortunately was in short supply at York City. When I asked my mate at half-time (of the last home game for the Minster Men) who he would retain for next year’s squad, he replied “That lad with the pitch fork looks handy!” Then one short day after relegation, the chairman made a plea for raising one million pounds to help the club be competitive. Someone asked me if they do corporate VIP boxes for games and seemed more interested in purchasing one when I told him that they face the car park rather than the pitch! When all’s said and done, supporting a team is about going through thick and thin. It is time to recharge the batteries and get behind the club for the challenges ahead, and who knows… a repeat of the Wembley double could happen again.

Kara-okay?
So York City finally had the proverbial fat lady singing as they tumbled out of the football league. Meanwhile Leicester, via their Italian manager Claudio Ranieri, had legendary tenor Andrea Bocelli belting out ‘Nessun Dorma’ in celebration of their success. Though I recognise the tune from Italia ’90, you cannot convince me that all those singing along inside the King Power Stadium knew the words! It was bad enough when people attempted karaoke to Gangnam Style.

If one day you dream of cruising the continent in your trusty old motor, you might have to skip the Netherlands. That is if a new bill presented to the Dutch parliament is passed, banning all petrol and diesel powered cars by 2025. The bill, introduced by the Dutch Labour Party, is quickly gaining strength, meaning that in less than a decade an entire European country would not be using fossil fuels to power their private transport. If it sounds a bit far-fetched, the Dutch aren’t the only ones working on ecochanges to the way they get about. Norwegian capital Oslo is looking to ban all cars from the city by 2019, and Paris will get rid of diesel cars by 2020.
While in London, motorists will be fined for driving high-emission cars within the existing Congestion Charge Zone (which is basically a way of stopping poor people from driving their crappy cars in London – aren’t we the best?). Still, big changes are afoot across the board, so when it comes time to buy your next car, a petrolpowered one might not be at the top of your list.

Anyone who works in construction will know that things can get pretty intense when competing for a big client. Fortunately things tend not to go beyond a few emails and phone calls, but fortunately this is not a story about the UK. In China it seems that competition for new building contracts can heat up pretty quick, as evidenced by a video recently released by the South China Morning Post. Posted to YouTube, the clip shows several huge bull dozers from two different firms fighting. Yes, bull dozers... fighting! The drivers of the
vehicles were attempting to block their rivals following a dispute about who held the contract to demolish a building in Hebei province, leading to an all-out battle in which giant bull dozers and trucks were overturned, injuring some people and causing masses of damage. FUTURE-PROOF
The future: mysterious, confusing, but definitely happening. Granted, we might not know whether or not we’ll all be enslaved by an invading alien race in the next decade, but we do know that energy prices will continue to rise and climate change will affect the weather. To that end ensure your home is future-proof by attending St Nick’s Environment Centre’s free, three-session workshop, explaining how to reduce your home’s environmental impact and prepare for extreme weather emergencies. It may sound drastic, but the course, taking place on 11th June, will help to make your home more comfortable AND cheaper to run. L AVA N D U L A A favourite in English gardens for centuries, Lavenders are perennial herbs that grow from woody bases. They form compact little shrubs with silvery needle-like leaves and slender stalks topped with very fragrant purple red pink or white flowers. The leaves are just as aromatic as the flowers. All lavenders prefer full sun and well-drained alkaline soil. Lavender should be planted in the spring with spacing of about one and a half to three feet apart. They can be divided, if necessary, but this is best done in the autumn. Ideally, you should mulch in winter with bark or compost. The most popular varieties of lavenders are: english English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia or L. officinalis) include varieties such as ‘Hidcote’, with deep purple flowers growing up to approximately 16 inches, which makes a good plant for hedging. Also ‘Munstead Dwarf’, with its low growing and compact habit with violet flowers, this dense, bushy shrub is perfect for edging paths. English lavender is the hardiest variety; it also has a sweeter scent than other varieties and is
traditionally used to create lavender oil. It is slow growing but tolerates cold climates and blooms in early summer and often again in autumn.
frenCh lavender French lavender (Lavandula dentate or Lavandula stoechas) has greyer foliage and the flowers are a lighter shade of purple and even white flowers. French lavender will need frost protection in a hard English winter.
duTCh lavender Lavandula x intermedia ‘Vera’ is of rounded habit and bears grey leaves and fragrant pale blue flowers. The leaves of the Dutch group tend to be larger than most Lavender. They prefer full sun and well drained soil. how To Care for lavender Lavender grows well and doesn't require a lot of watering or maintenance. However, just like most plants, lavender will look better and be healthier with the right type of pruning: • Cut the branches back to about 1/3 of their length in the spring, just after flowering. • A big plant that has been neglected can be trimmed a little farther, about halfway, as long as you leave green foliage behind and do not cut down to the woody part. • Cut the flower wand stems, which
are usually bright green, as well as the stems with the grey leaves. • Shape the plant into a ball, or a hedge with straight sides and a rounded top. • Prune only lightly if the plant is more than three years old and has never been pruned. You can increase the amount of pruning slightly each following year until you are pruning normally. • Never prune your lavender plant all the way back to the woody part of the branches, as this will probably kill it.

goT a gardening QuesTion? Ask
CHRIS Brown from BROWN NURSERIES If you have a question for Chris, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk. Call Chris on 766266.
Q.
Chris, i have had wallflowers in a pot for a while now, but they are dying off. if i plant them in the garden will they come again?
a.
Several plants have the name ‘wallflower’ – most of them are biennial to perennial bushy flowering plants with herbaceous stems. Erysimum is a genus of wallflower that belongs to the brassica family, and the flowers resemble those of a broccoli that has been allowed to flower. The other genus is cheiranthus which is native to the Canary Islands, but is widely found throughout the UK and the rest of mainland Europe. As perennials they can be cut back in early spring to produce a fresh display. These prolific plants bloom so hard and full for the entire season, that they soon fade away, only lasting three to five years. Wallflowers can be cut back after blooming, or you can wait until the end of winter or very early spring. Cut them to nearly the ground, and the plant will reward you with a new flush of growth when temperatures warm up. Erysimum Bowles Mauve is one of my favourite perennials, which flowers all summer with a beautiful scent. You can sow wallflowers in May thinly in a seed bed, then you can transplant these fully grown
plants into your garden in September-October for a beautiful riot of colour from April of the following year. Hence bi-annual: planting one year, following the next. Best of luck!
Q.
Could you recommend some plants for summer hanging baskets and patio planters, please? also, do you have any tips for looking after them?
a.
These days, the choice of plants is fantastic, as most plants I am about to mention come in a wide variety of colours and shades. When people ask for hot colours in a basket, we use reds, orange, and yellow in our planting. For softer tones, we prefer pinks, blues, and white, all in light shades. But the choice is yours to suit your garden. Let’s start at the bottom of the hanging basket: place a circle of moss, about the size of a saucer, at the bottom of the basket, then add some compost so you have a level surface. The plants for this layer can include trailing verbena, calibrachoa ‘Million Bells’, bidens, lobelia, helichrysum silver, scaevola, and surfina. By placing moss up the sides of the basket, about
three more inches, then adding compost to that level, you can next place diasica, sanvitalia, nemesia ‘nuvo’, bedding bergonias, verbena, and phlox. Then move up another layer with more moss and compost, again by about three inches. The top-side layer of your basket could include short trailing plants, brachyscome, centradenia, Felicia, helichrysum gold, marigold ‘French’ bergonia, and impatiens. Then add moss to the very top edge of the basket and fill with compost to the top. This is my favourite layer as it is the same for all out baskets, as well as for our planters. Start with a fuchsia in the centre, then place three geraniums in a triangle around the fuchsia. The next triangle working outwards could include salvia, African marigolds, dianthus and cineraria. Around the edge of the basket or planter you could use trailing geraniums, trailing fuschia, bacopa, lysimachia, trailing bergonias, trailing verbena, and million bells. If you have any space left, use bedding bergonias as fillers. Use good quality compost and add a slow-release fertilizer. Water every day in hot weather, and then every other day when it’s cooler. The basket or planter should flower until the first frost of winter. If you have any trouble at all when making your basket, call into the nursery and ask for some advice. Enjoy them!

TONY CHALCRAFT GIVES US THE LOWDOWN ON OUR GARDENS.
As spring gives way to early summer, it’s time to start planting out those tender veg crops. Don’t rush into this though, cold days and even colder nights can still occur; sharp frosts as late as mid-June are not unknown in the York area. Spring so far has been especially fickle. As I write it’s barely eight degrees outside and a cold north wind is hammering the window. Unless we get a sudden burst of warm weather there’s every reason for extra caution this year. So what are the tender veg crops about which we need to be cautious? In the main they are those that, with some exceptions, originate from the Americas: sweet corn, tomatoes, runner and French beans (yes, despite the name the latter didn’t originate
in France), courgettes, marrows (if you must grow these watery beasts), pumpkins and cucumbers. All of these can be damaged or even killed by a night frost. Cool days when temperatures hover at twelve degrees or less will also make them decidedly unhappy.
There are three main rules when it comes to getting tender veg established. First and most important don’t plant them in the open ground without protection, unless you have a very sheltered spot, before the last week in May. By then the chance of a nip of frost is much reduced. Second, make sure all plants are thoroughly acclimatised to the outdoors by ‘hardening off’. This means, especially if they’ve been bought from a garden centre or mollycoddled in
your greenhouse, that they should be gradually exposed to outside conditions over a period of a week or more. Put outside in a protected spot on warm days but take in at night unless it is particularly mild. Thirdly, before committing all your tender veg to the plot, take a look at the long term weather forecast. I’m an avid weather watcher and find that the forecasts are generally reliable, at least for seven to ten days ahead. If cold weather, and especially cold nights, are predicted... hold back!
A more fiddly approach is to protect tender crops when first planted. Using cloches is one option. Making your own using alkathene pipe, strong clear plastic and thin wire (to keep the plastic on the hoops) is far cheaper than buying them ready
made. Cloches will keep off cold winds but may not keep out a sharp late frost. Windbreaks can also help if the weather is breezy. These are easily rigged up from old plastic sacks or sheets, but make sure they don’t blow away or flatten the plants! Of all the tender crops to get going perhaps the most difficult is tomatoes. Growing them outdoors is hard enough anyway, but planting out during a cool spell in early June can really set them back. You can tell when a tomato is cold, the leaves turn blue! To avoid chilled plants any tomatoes I grow outside are not usually set out before Midsummer Day. Butternut squash is another tricky tender veg. Other pumpkins and squashes are more tolerant of a cold start, but butternuts are particularly pernickety. Again, make sure the weather is set fair before this semi-tropical crop takes its chance in the great Yorkshire outdoors. all the best, and see you next month!

Conrad from Bradshaws Direct offers tips and advice on how to look after your pond and fish. Finally summer seems to have arrived! With water temperatures rising there are a few things we pond keepers need to consider. First off is the health of your fish: the warmer the weather, the less oxygen pond water can hold. Sometimes we see fish gathering round the bottom of a waterfall or fountain and literally ‘gasping’ at the surface. Ultimately this can lead to fish deaths so it’s wise to do something to improve oxygen levels. Firstly, if you have a pump or fountain turn it on and don’t turn it off at night. Oxygen levels are usually at their lowest just before dawn as plants will use the oxygen up overnight. The more splashing your pump or fountain creates the more oxygen it adds to the water. It might help to add a waterfall instead of just a pipe or change your fountain type to a more energetic one.
pump iT up An air pump is the perfect solution. You can buy mains or even solar powered units that make installation simple. The pump sits by your pond and a narrow hose goes into the water with a weighted air stone on the end. Air is pumped through the stone and it bubbles up through the water adding oxygen as it breaks the surface. Ponds can also go green in summer, and blanket weed goes crazy. You can remove the weed with a net or by twirling a cane in the water and then throw it on the compost heap, but it’s far easier to get a treatment to reduce its growth. Green water can be fixed completely and permanently with a filter using ultraviolet light, and you can get one for even the smallest For advice call: ponds.

fussy eaTers
Shay and I have been going through the motions at meal time recently. When toddlers start to gain their independence, mealtimes can become really frustrating. Apparently fussy eating is a normal phase in a toddler’s development, so try not to get anxious and remain calm and positive. Most of the time, your little one will eat enough to keep them going, even when they’re saying no at meal times. Try and think about the general consumption over a week as opposed to a single meal time or day. Many toddlers experience a fear of new foods around the age of two. To help encourage your son or daughter to try new food, let them see you and others enjoying it. Exercise also works wonders for creating a healthy appetite! These are some of the suggestions that I have found useful:
eaT TogeTher Toddlers learn to eat new foods by copying their parents and others, so eat the same as them. Giving your toddler the choice can help too; big dishes in the middle of the table make it feel more like a group activity. sTay posiTive Even if you’re not so keen on broccoli; put a brave face on in front of your little one to encourage them to eat it. Remember to praise them after they’ve eaten well too. If they get more attention from you by not eating, they may use this for a reaction. Unfinished meals don’t need to sit there for more than half an hour, it’s makes sense to clear away and move on.
make iT fun Have tea time dates with other children, if they see other kids eating interesting foods, they will be more inclined to join in. TV and pets provide a huge distraction and are best kept away from the dining table. Engage your toddler in conversation and talk at a level they can understand. Toddlers enjoy feeling grown up so giving them food they can eat on their own is a bonus. make iT ConsisTenT Toddlers thrive on routine – you’ve heard it before I’m sure. Three meal times a day is the way to go that fits around your toddlers sleeping pattern. and a few don’Ts… • Don’t bribe or beg your toddler • Don’t offer an alternative • Don’t offer pudding • Don’t forget about drinks • Your toddler needs between 350ml (two thirds of a pint) and 500ml (a pint) of milk a day. • Don’t assume that a refusal is forever – keep trying! • Most importantly: Don’t worry if it doesn’t go as planned . • If you’re still concerned talk to your health visitor or GP; they can check your little ones weight against their height and make sure everything is ok.

share Care and Care alike! The Care Taking place 6th-12th June, Carer’s Week 2016 will highlight and celebrate the hard work of the millions of people in the UK who care for, or look after, an elderly or ill friend or family member. Here’s how you can get involved.
Are you a carer? If so, here are some tips to help get the message, and your story, out during Carer’s Week. • run an evenT. Seriously, it could be anything from a coffee morning, jumble sale, or book club, to a huge festival or concert. Anything that gets the message out there will help, and be sure to add your details to the Carer’s Week website below. • ask your friends if They Care for someone.
For an increasing number of people in the country, caring for someone full-time is just a way of life. It might be a partner, child, elderly parent, or even close friend – either way right now in this city thousands of us are looking out for somebody else and putting their needs above our own. As tough as it might be, there’s no need to do that alone, and Carer’s Week is all about finding the help some of us need. This important campaign is brought to life by individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the
UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is. making iT BeTTer As ever, Carer’s Week is focusing on building ‘Carer Friendly Communities’. The goal is to have nation-wide communities which are able to support carers to allow them to look after their loved ones well, and also recognise that they are individuals with needs of their own. By achieving this, everybody’s lives will be made easier; from the carers striving to care, to the people that actually need to be cared for.
What support could you lend each other? Also, make sure they know about Carer’s Week as well. • ChaT To your kids or grand kids, or young people you know, about caring. The earlier children know just how many people are carers, and how that number is set to rise in the future, the better prepared and informed our communities will be. • ConTaCT your loCal mp or CounCillor and get them to pledge support to Carer’s Week. Make sure your local government knows about how important caring is. • if you have anoTher JoB, ask your boss if you can distribute information about Carer’s Week, highlighting the fact that you take care of someone, to colleagues. Find out more about the week, as well as discovering a wealth of useful information, at www.carersweek.org
Your health, your help Getting the right health care for you or a member of your family can be tricky, especially if you don’t know who to talk to. Luckily, one local organisation has been set up purely to help you get the help you need, and they’re ready to answer your questions and listen to your problems. Healthwatch York not only possesses a wealth of information about health services locally, but their dedicated and friendly staff can also point you in the right direction if you ever need to make a complaint about a service you’re unhappy with. Cuppa, anyone? Care Home Open Day is taking place on 17th June this year. Here’s what it’s all about, and how soon you might be enjoying a brew with a few new friends. Care homes are really important. Thousands of people across the country now call one home, and that number is set to increase in the coming years. Although many care homes sit right in the middle of local communities, they can often seem like closed-off and private places. The aim of Care Home Open Day is to throw open the doors of as many homes as possible, and invite local people in to meet the residents, chat, and have fun.
HOMES FROM HOME Thousands of care homes across the country take part each year, welcoming one and all, while arranging events and activities that help to create lasting links between care home residents and their local communities. It’s all about showing people what great care homes are really about, and how they can be at the centre of our communities, developing relationships across the generations.
GET INVOLVED A number of York care homes will be open on the 17th, each running their own specific events. But if you run, work for, or even live in a care home, and this is the first you’ve heard of the open day… it’s not too late. Visit www. carehomeopenday.org.uk to register your interest to be involved. You can also pop onto that site to find your nearest open care home and prepare to meet some interesting, funny and unique people. Ours is milk and one sugar, thanks. We’ll see you there!

Howard Mosley-Chalk is a father and a husband. But more importantly he is a man. These are his (un)manly words.
This month my baby turns one. Mental. That isn't the first time the above sentence has appeared in this magazine, and in fact I've been writing these columns since my almost six year old daughter was 18 months old. It was an article in 2012 about how she bosses me about. Nothing has changed except her vocabulary, which now contains many more versions of 'do this now, daddy!' But as our middle child (the bombastic, cataclysmic one) became three recently, the passage of time has been increasingly on my mind. When you have kids you tend not to register the passing of Lady Time in adult ways (time in a job, time in
a house, time with a partner) but rather in a way that links to the kids. My wife and I have been parents for almost six years now, but it feels like FOREVER because to our daughter, it is. My mate Stephen Hawking (ask me to do my impression of him; you'll be both impressed and horrendously offended) says that time is a relative construct which not only feels different to different people, but actually is different; slowing or speeding up depending on your point of view. He told me that during one of our late night drinking sessions. He's a lightweight.
YEAR ONE
If you want time to slow down so you can appreciate it better, have children. I often hear people saying about their kids, “oh, they grow up so fast!” They don't. If you invest yourself fully into their lives and see the world in the same way they do, time
will slow down to a snail's pace. I remember, as a kid, thinking that a week was an eternity. Seven whole days was a massive amount of time, because – relatively speaking – I'd only been alive for a limited number of weeks myself. Spend as much time as you can with kids and you'll get that sense of time back. To our baby (crawling, standing, dadadada-ing) his one year of life is the total sum of his existence, his universe. His
“ ‘OH, THEY GROW UP SO FAST!’ THEY DON’T” appreciation of time might be a little lacking, y'know, coz he poops himself and that, but a week to him is one 52nd of his entire life, which is the equivalent of around
seven months to me. Seven months to him is the same as 20 years to me. 20 years to him is the same as 700 years to me. Holy crap. That was maths by the way, so could be wrong. And pointless.

My point is that your focus can completely alter the passage of time. Looking back, the previous year doesn't 'feel' like a year did prior to having children, but rather like the first year of my baby boy's life; significant, amazing, scary, hilarious. He's been around the sun once, had a good look around, got a feel for life, been sick on me several times (including, recently, directly into my mouth – I think on purpose) and decided to stay. I appreciate that. So... if Hawking is correct (and many people tell me that he's got a few things right in the past, that lad) and time does actually slow down for some people, the last six years have been longer for me than the six years before that, despite me now being older and having experienced more six year time
months rs to me as That uld be
durations. Does that make sense? No? Okay. Try this: Immerse yourself in your children's world. Sit on the floor as often as possible, and experience everything they experience; feel what they feel, no matter how 'childish' (boo!) it seems to your adult sense of reasoning. Because an adult's sense of reasoning is stupid, and false, and governed by what other adults will think of them. Drawing a picture of an eight limbed postman is the greatest achievement in the world, being able to correctly pronounce 'hot air balloon' is actually akin to winning a Nobel Prize, and standing up for the first time to pull a plate of jammy toast onto the carpet is more significant than winning an Olympic gold medal. Appreciate those things, live through them with your children, and your time on the earth will not be short at all but rather enjoyably prolonged. Then maybe one day you'll be as pretentious as me as to use Latin in a title. Yeah, baby!

Tanning Tips:
Dr Organic Moroccan Glow has provided the comprehensive package for making sure your tan is the best it can be. It’s a more natural way to get a tan featuring natural and organic ingredients. The texture of the tan makes application super easy – it glides on. We followed instructions and exfoliated with the suggested product and woke up with even coverage. The tan stayed in good condition for about a week much to our delight - we can only put this down to the tan extender. priCes range from £8.99 - £14.99 | holland & BarreTT

ASK THE EXPERT
HAIR & BEAUTY Beauty expert, Dr Saleena Zimri from Skin Doctor, is back to answer all of your beauty dilemmas! This month, she explains all about how to reduce the appearance of stretch marks.
Many of us, regardless of gender, end up with stretch marks at some point in our lives. They can be caused by rapid growth spurts due to hormonal changes in pregnancy or puberty, or from HRT; or by general weight gain or loss. However, even though stretch marks affect so many of us, they can still leave us feeling embarrassed to step onto the beach in a bikini, or to wear shorts or a crop top in summer. Thankfully, you don’t have to suffer in silence – there are plenty of treatments available that can help to reduce the appearance of stretch marks, and increase your confidence.
genuine dermapen This treatment involves the use of micro-fine needles, which perforate the skin’s top layers and encourage blood to rise to the surface of the skin.
This allows the skin to start to regenerate naturally, creating new collagen and elastin layers, which can help stretch marks to disappear, as well as improve the texture of your skin. TCa peel This deep, exfoliating peel removes the top layer of skin, so that you’re left with the fresh, new skin underneath. This has the effect of smoothing stretch marks, and making them less visible. For the best results, you should aim for a minimum of two to four peels. dr murad CelluliTe and sTreTCh mark TreaTmenT I’m a big fan of Dr Murad’s treatments, and this one is particularly effective. It takes just 45 minutes, and can help to firm up and tone your body, whether you want to focus on your thighs, bottom, bust, upper arms or tummy.
skin TighTening laser This treatment uses infrared to help to firm up any loose skin you may have, helping you to regain more youthful contours. If you have stretch marks after weight loss, this treatment could help you to feel as amazing as you deserve to, after achieving your weight loss goal. piXel laser Similar to the Genuine Dermapen, this treatment uses a precision laser rather than microfine needles. The laser creates thousands of microscopic perforations, which helps to stimulate new collagen, eventually leading to a better texture and tone for your skin. offering a wide variety of Murad products, and with products ranging from non-surgical augmentation to minor surgery, the team at Skin Doctor on Blossom Street combine excellent medical practice and expertise with a friendly, caring service. Mexican dine FOR stand-off TO
OFFERS NOT TO BE REFUSED Hey, fans of travelling… give it a rest, will you? You don’t need to go jetting off around the globe for a true taste of the Far East; just pop over to COSMO on Bridge Street. With more than 150 dishes from around the world, COSMO York delivers a variety of seasonal menus from a global kitchen - even the fussiest eater is challenged to find something they won’t like. Seriously, try. Each of the dishes is prepared in small batches to ensure they are always fresh, and because the highly trained, highly skilled chefs of COSMO York take an enormous amount of pride in presentation, the food is a feast for the eyes as well as the tum. Take some sun screen with you, as you’re about to take a gastronomic journey through many different countries and cultures, discovering the most authentic flavours of the world… while keeping that familiar view over the River Ouse. But the really amazing news is that this month the restaurant is celebrating two whole years of lining the delicate palates of York foodies, and you’re invited to the party. Check out their full-page advert in this section of the magazine to see all the mouth-watering offers to gobble up. to book your table, call 633800.
With the sun beating down on you, and the warm breeze blasting your face with the captured particles of a thousand suburban sandpits, you could close your eyes and imagine you're standing in Mexico. That is until your revelry is shattered by someone asking you if you'd like to take tonight's ghost walk, or why you're standing on High Petergate with closed eyes while gently shaking maracas. But fret not, dear amigo... there is a place for you and your day dreams. Chiquito’s Mexican Bar and Restaurant welcomes all fans of the sun to their Tex-Mex hideaway this summer, up at Clifton Moor. Their menus are packed with the finest Mexican and American cuisine so as to transport your taste buds to Tijuana. If you've never sampled the delights of Mexico, June is the perfect month to do so, especially considering that all Your Local Link readers can get £10 off their bill. Simple find Chiquito advert in these pages, take it along with you, then buy two or more main meals to qualify. More cash in your pocket means more opportunities to try more dishes; so yes, we will have extra hot sauce in that taco. To book your table, call 477900, and to peruse the menu go towww.chiquito.co.uk Arriba!
