National Carers Week runs from 7th-13th June. The annual campaign raises awareness for caring, highlights the challenges that unpaid carers face and recognises the contribution they make to families and communities across the UK. It can also help people who might not have thought of themselves as carers to identify as such and access support. The theme for this year is Making Caring Visible and Valued.

SO WHAT IS A CARER?

There are an estimated 6.5 million people in the UK who are carers. Following the pandemic, many people are taking on more caring responsibilities for their relatives and friends who are disabled, ill or older and who need support. National Carers Week defines a carer as someone who: ‘[1] Cares (unpaid) for family or friends who have a disability, illness or who need support in later life: Washing them. And their laundry. And their dishes. Keeping appointments. And records. And tempers. Giving medicine. And time. And hugs. Filling forms. And fridges. And silences. Dealing with doctors. And nurses. And pharmacists. And social workers. And benefits agencies. And care workers. And a lack of sleep. [2] Needs support to manage a life on their own.’ The campaign wants carers to be recognised for the difficulties they are experiencing, respected for all they are doing, and provided with information, support and understanding.

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

Whether it’s raising awareness by pledging your support on carersweek. org, posting on social media or contacting local politicians, all these activities help raise the profile of caring in communities. Workplaces can look at setting up an employee carers’ network, and if you know someone who is a carer, now might be a good time to reach out have a conversation. The team at York Carers Centre

At York Steiner School we see childhood as a precious time, full of joy and curiosity. This is a place where pupils love to learn...

York Steiner School believes each child is unique and should have their potential “caught” not “taught”. Our curriculum is an exciting mix of academic, artistic and practical activities that stimulate an interest in the world while supporting their intellectual, social and emotional development. Our children are curious and confident and go on to achieve amazing things at GCSE level and beyond - but we know we are also sending them out into the world with the passion, creativity and confidence to achieve their dreams. Right now, the 1,100 Steiner schools across the world have had a surge in new admissions as parents tell us how home learning under Covid-19 lockdowns have changed the way they view their children’s education. They are drawn to our busy hands-on lessons – often outdoors – and joyful approach to core subjects in maths, science and literacy. Our school is a beautiful calm place where we believe in educating the Whole Child. This starts from our Gentle Beginnings groups for babies and Parent and Toddler groups then into Kindergarten through to Class 8 where the children leave us at 14 years old.

York Family Mediation Service welcomes government voucher scheme

The government has announced that it is investing £1m in family mediation, to support families to resolve issues relating to children. Under the scheme, the Ministry of Justice will provide contributions of up to £500 per family, to resolve issues relating to children following parental separation. Mediation will be provided by Family Mediation Council Accredited (FMCA) mediators and the fund will reduce the costs of mediation for at least 2000 families. Family mediation is a process in which an independent, professionally trained mediator helps parents work out arrangements for children and finances following separation. Mediation can also be helpful when previous child arrangements need to change, particularly as children grow up. Carol Etherington, Manager of York Family Mediation Service, said ‘This brilliant new voucher scheme will really help separating parents who are worried about the cost of using Family Mediation. We already provide legally-aided mediation, whereby those who are eligible because they are relying on benefits or who are working but still have low incomes can get some or even all of their appointments with us free of charge. The Ministry of Justice voucher scheme will enable our charity to help even more families who are breaking up by supporting them with the costs of using our service, which is especially important in these difficult times where parents may have been furloughed or otherwise affected by the recent lockdowns.’ Further information about the voucher scheme for families who feel they may benefit can be found on the following websites: www.familymediationcouncil.org.uk • www.gov.uk/guidance/ family-mediation-voucher-scheme
