YORK LIFE York International Women’s Week Programme launched
York International Women’s Week runs from 5th-13th March and will include over 30 events to coincide with International Women’s Day. There will be talks, music, exhibitions, workshops, clothes swaps and more in a mix of in-person (indoor and outdoor) and online events. Most of which are free to attend and put on by individual women and organisations. A ‘Question Time’ event will see local women politicians debating the theme Women and Climate Change, chaired by BBC York’s Elly Fiorentina. There are speakers from as far afield as Nicaragua, India, Uganda, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan, as well as local groups including Friends of Rowntree Park, York & District TUC, Real People Theatre and Yorkits. Kyra Women’s Project’s open day will have speakers and taster sessions to dip into and see how they help women make positive changes in their lives. York Theatre Royal and the Woodmeadow Trust are running a creative writing outdoors workshop, while One Planet York is looking at the impact of personal care products on health and the environment. Creatives will enjoy York Kyra Women’s Project in York Learning's offering: an art workshop using recycled materials, and Mumbai-based speaker Aqui Thami is talking about the Sister Library, India's only feminist library. There's also a performance from The Barberellas titled A Playlist For Right Now. A spokesperson for the programme coordinating group said: "We are delighted to have such an exciting and wide-ranging programme with something for everyone. We are especially keen to help anyone facing barriers to attending because of low income, disability, lack of confidence or anything else to join in, so do get in touch."
