WALKING WITH

THE WANDERER This semi-urban walk weaves its way from the city centre to Holgate before passing a preserved windmill to reach West Bank Park. It then heads over the lesser-known part of Micklegate Stray, Hob Moor, to reach the stray’s more frequented expanse, the Knavesmire. Skirting the racecourse complex, it reaches the river —which is crossed on the Millennium Bridge. New Walk is then followed to Skeldergate Bridge, after which the walls are ascended to the return to the Micklegate Bar starting point.

Is This Walk For Me?

This is a short and easy walk. There are no stiles and only a few minor slopes, but there are several sets of steps. Much of the route is on hard surfaces but Hob Moor can be muddy, and the riverside section will be impassable at times of flood.

Getting There

The starting point for the directions is Micklegate Bar, but the walk can begin from any point on route. Nearby bus stops to Micklegate Bar in Blossom Street are served by routes 1, 3, 4 and 5, amongst others. Nunnery Lane is the nearest carpark.

Refreshments

There are plenty of opportunities near the start but fewer directly en route. The Cross Keys pub and Café at no12 in Dringhouses are conveniently situated at the halfway point.

What To See

The restored and working Holgate Windmill has regular open days (see https://www.holgatewindmill.org/events). West Bank Park is one of York’s lesser-known parks but has a range of features and rare trees that date back to its time as a nursery. Hob Moor is ancient grazing land and a local nature reserve (see https://friendsofhobmoor.org.uk/). New Walk provides a tree-lined return to the city. Baile Hill and the city walls are less frequented parts of York’s historic defences.

12

Holgate, Micklegate Stray, the Riverside and the Bar Walls Time: 2 hours Distance: 4 miles

1. Starting with Micklegate Bar (gateway)

behind you, go left at the traffic lights, having first crossed to the far side of the road (Nunnery Lane). At the end of the wall take the wide alley right continuing ahead across a street. At the end of the school playground go half-left across the green and cross the road at traffic lights. Go through the wooden gate opposite and walk through the allotments on the main path to a barrier at a road.

2. Cross and descend the steps opposite, then follow the tarmac track beside more allotments. At the road, turn right passing the sports pavilion to reach the main (Tadcaster) road. Cross and go right for a while, but immediately after the Elmbank Hotel turn left (Driffield Terrace).

3. In 40 metres, keep ahead (Love Lane)

on a path that soon ascends steps and crosses the railway. Over, keep ahead to a T-junction. Turn right to another T-junction (Holgate Road). Turn left, cross at pedestrian lights and take the foot/ cycle path a few metres back on the right (walking behind the Fox pub). When this parallels the road, continue until you reach a set of bollards, then cross the road with care and walk-up Windmill Rise. At the windmill, keep left and find the narrow path to the right of house no. 39. This leads to a road.

4. Turn right, but in 60-metres go into West Bank Park over the road. Follow

the main path up steps before passing between stone pillars. Stay on the path with trees to the left and the lawn to the right, until you reach a playground. Turn left and exit the park through a gate. Turn left (Hamilton Drive). Take the second right (Campbell Avenue). At the end of the road go half-left over the crossing street, taking a signed path between houses.

5. Go beyond the bridge/barrier following

the tarmac track to a metal post. Here go straight ahead (not half right) over the grass aiming for a gap in the distant hedge. Go through the gated gap, following the worn path over the grass field towards another gate. Go left through the gate, but in 20 metres go right on Railway View. At the crossroads turn left, walking up the slope and over the railway bridge to a T-junction with the Cross Keys pub to your left.

6. Cross the road to the church and turn right for 100 metres, then turn left after the hotel (Cherry Lane). Follow this, keeping right to the Knavesmire. Cross the racecourse and keep ahead aiming for a distant railings gap. Cross the racecourse again and go towards the brick building left. Join the paved access road going left but in 75 metres, opposite a racecourse entrance, turn right to find a cycle track. Follow this left near metal railings to a road. Cross the road and turn left for 125 metres to the cycle track sign. Turn right.

8. Turn right up the steps and go right over the river. On the other side take the gate leading onto the city wall climbing steps. Now follow the city wall, passing over a gateway (Victoria Bar) back to the start.

YORK TIMES

7. Follow the track to the river and turn left. Continue to the Millennium Bridge. Ascend the steps and cross over. On the far side, turn left and walk alongside the river, ignoring all ways off right, to the obvious Blue Bridge. Cross and continue beside the main river to go under a road (Skeldergate) bridge.

YORK SPORT REPORT • YORK SPORT REPORT • YORK SPORT REPORT

March Report At the time of publication, York City F.C. sit comfortably in 18th place in the National League, two points away from the relegation zone, a gap that could stretch to eight if the Minstermen win their two games in hand. In the last month City managed to remain unbeaten against fellow relegation-threatened sides — after a win over Oxford and a draw against Maidenhead. Caught in the middle of those results however, was a frustrating away loss at the hands of Hartlepool United. The already disappointing result was further marred by crowd trouble after the final whistle— leading to a dispute between local police and the York City Supporters Trust (YCST). This came about after Cleveland Police — the force responsible for the policing of Hartlepool— released a statement that alleged “significant violent disorder” took place between a group of York City and Hartlepool supporters as the away fans made their way back

Peek behind the scenes at York RLFC

By Staff Writer Sammi Minion to the train station. They said that “a large crowd of York City supporters appeared to have charged towards Hartlepool United fans in the town”. As a result, when faced with what they called “confrontational and aggressive behaviour” officers made eight arrests. The YCST have suggested that the police report “does not entirely align with the experiences of many fans and our members.” In a statement of their own, the Trust called for an independent review. Outlining that, “While we respect the efforts of the police, we urge a comprehensive and fair examination of all sides of the events to ensure an accurate representation of the situation.” “YCST would like to see a broad review of all plans and subsequent events that engages both football clubs and supporter organisations. This review should include evidence collected from a range of sources including personal statements and social media.” York City face 17th-place Southend and 19th-place Dorking — the two teams closest to them in the table — across the next two fixtures. Six points from those games might finally carry the club away from relegation, but anything less could see the Minstermen sink closer to the danger zone. Follow all the latest sports updates at www.yourlocallink.co.uk

The first episode of We Are York — a brand new (and free to view) behind-the scenes documentary focusing on York’s professional rugby teams— was released to YouTube last month. Speaking at its release, Director and Producer Craig Bingham announced that he expects the series to “look beyond the scoreboard” as he hopes to “encapsulate the essence of York”. We Are York will be updated regularly throughout the season — as York Knights and Valkyrie

both spend the next 12-months pushing for Super League glory —allowing supporters to follow their club like never before. Craig said, "I’m more interested in what happens off the pitch than on it - the personalities behind the players, their daily grind, what makes them tick, their fears, insecurities, doubts - all of it. It will delve into the players' livelihoods and tap into the influence rugby has on their lives.” Head to www.youtube. com/@YorkRLFC to catch the first episode now.

DON’T MISS OUT ON FUNDING FOR YOUTH ATHLETES! Applications for the UK’s largest independent athlete support programme – the GLL Sport Foundation Awards – close on the 20th of February. All successful applicants will be given access to the 250 sport and leisure facilities across the UK operated by GLL under its “Better” trading brand. This includes York Leisure Centre at the York Community Stadium

GLL’s Sport Foundation Chair, said: “There’s still time for talented athletes across York to apply for our awards and take advantage of a unique opportunity to reach their sporting potential.” Applications are open until 20th February 2024 and are accessible via the website portal – www. gllsportfoundation.org.

A Unique Resting Place for Your Loved Ones in York's New Memory Tree Woodland The Memory Tree Co. will shortly unveil York's first dedicated Memorial Woodland, a place which can be an alternative forever for your deceased loved ones. In a ground-breaking venture, new, local company 'The Memory Tree Co.' is redefining the way we bid farewell to our loved ones with the upcoming opening of York's first memorial woodland. Nestled on the outskirts of our historic city, the company have created a unique space. Those using the service will plant a commemorative tree that they can watch grow and become part of the local landscape in the months and years after the tragic loss of a loved one. The new woodland promises a natural and unique way to honour and remember those we hold dear to us. Say goodbye to traditional burial grounds and step into a world where nature takes the lead, offering a place of solace and reflection amidst this dedicated memorial woodland. In recent years, the ancient practice of woodland memorials has seen a resurgence in popularity. When individuals seek to place a more profound connection to nature at the heart of their

memorial service, the planting of a memory tree makes perfect sense. Beyond serving as a resting place, a woodland memory tree symbolises a return to nature, providing a serene and eco-friendly alternative for bidding goodbye. The Memory Tree Co. has carefully crafted this unique woodland experience, marking the beginning of a heartfelt journey that engages with and becomes a permanent living feature of the local community. With a commitment to providing a space that is both unique and meaningful, this woodland venture is also a place where local wildlife habitats can be re-established and flourish again. The Memory Tree Co. have tastefully put together a list of native Yorkshire trees including Oak, Blackthorne, Alder, Silver Birch and more with the addition of some smaller tree and shrub species which are aimed at providing shelter and homes for wildlife. The concept works by first deciding

how you wish to part ways with your loved one's ashes. You can choose a simple ashes burial which is in an eco-friendly, biodegradable box that is then planted in front of your chosen tree, and finished with a plaque. Or you could decide on an earth burial where you mix the ashes in with the soil where your chosen tree is planted. There are many ways to let your loved ones live on and the team at The Memory Tree Co. can help advise on the best fit for you. The opening of the memorial woodland marks a significant milestone for The Memory Tree Co. as it plants its roots in the local community. This venture will encompass the first of many heartfelt farewells in a woodland that promises a departure from the ordinary, embracing the unique

and cherished memories of our loved ones. Registrations are now open for Memory Trees at the new woodland site near York so if you would like to find out more information about it or you would like to register your interest for a Memory Tree you can visit www. thememorytreeco.co.uk.

HOROSCOPES

Horoscopes STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH: PISCES

PISCES 19TH FEB – 20TH MAR

A curious month. Do you try something new or do your play it safe and work hard at preserving the status quo? On an entirely different level, do you undertake a journey (and I mean a physical journey here) or stay put and save yourself the time, effort, and money? These are two entirely different issues, but you’ll have mixed feelings in both cases. Help is on hand from a caring member of the opposite sex who will prove their friendship by telling you exactly what they think – in an honest and supportive way!

16

ARIES 21ST MAR – 19TH APR Maybe a couple of awkward issues this month concerning change or possible change. Do you stick with the devil you know, or take a chance on the devil you don’t know? This conundrum can be applied across the board… relationships, cars, holiday destinations, etc. If you can take the time to work out all the pros and cons in detail, this attitude should help, but if it comes down to a choice between heart and head, this time around follow your head! TAURUS 20TH APR – 20TH MAY

Financial priorities are being looked at across the board. Travel plans are being made for April, with strengthening family ties with people and places south of Yorkshire. Interesting news from overseas around the 10th and 11th and a boost to your social life around the 19th and 20th.

GEMINI 21ST MAY – 20TH JUN

Good news and bad news! The good news is that March is one of those months when you start getting a lot of what you want and what you’ve been looking for, but the bad news is that you’re going to have to work like hell to get it,

BY AST RO LO G IST

James Christie

always remembering that there is no such thing as a free lunch! Having said that, quite an exciting few weeks in which new doors open when old doors close. Your social life should become increasingly “interesting” as the month progresses.

CANCER 21ST JUN – 22ND JUL

Nevertheless, duty and loyalty to others do impede personal ambitions, and while this may be both frustrating and annoying, there isn’t much you can do about it, other than grin and bear it. On the plus side, this does bring you closer to one very particular special person.

You may well come in for some criticism from other people, but you must stick to your guns and have faith in your own beliefs. If you have to tell an old friend to back off, this may be sad but necessary. Some low moods coalesce around the 9th but lift by the 15th –this is a period in which you should not make impulsive decisions. You will be stronger by the end of the month than you were at the beginning, even if it does feel like a bit of a slog at times.

VIRGO 23RD AUG – 22ND SEPT March is a month of secrets being brought out into the open. You'll learn a few things about yourself that you never knew. It is certainly a time (for better or worse) of seeing yourself as other people see you. Maybe you’ll start seeing other people in the same way. Some discussions about the property, love it or list it, and watch out for a spot of ill health around the 16th — a foody tummy thing, and I warned you about those oysters.

LEO 23RD JUL – 22ND AUG

LIBRA 23RD SEPT – 22ND OCT

It seems like there might be a few extra responsibilities being dumped on your shoulders at this time, and while this is a situation you can’t easily wriggle out of, it does provide you with a few opportunities to prove your worth, especially to other people who have got into the habit of taking you for granted.

Last month it was all about fun and romance, while this month it’s all about jobs, careers, and money. There's no reason why you can’t enjoy the best of both worlds, but you’ll be following your head much more often than your heart. Practical matters will be uppermost on your agenda. The

SCORPIO 23RD OCT – 21ST NOV

A gentle and romantic month, especially for the youngsters out there. Older members of the sign also benefit from a period of emotional calm and stability. This is not the time to drag skeletons out of the closet or go scratching old wounds. Some time (and money) is spent on home improvements, especially in connection with roofing and central heating.

SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV – 21ST DEC Some tension and conflict in relationships, especially if you are not being open with your feelings and views. One partner wants stability while the other is looking for change. On a brighter note, a “go-getting” attitude on the job front serves you well, but there are some changes to work routines which must be dealt with, especially around the 19th and 20th. A very rewarding time for anyone involved in sports, especially competitive sports.

CAPRICORN 22ND DEC – 19TH JAN Some lovely opportunities are being presented to you at this time, and you’d be a bit of a twit to turn them down. Saying yes opens the door to meeting new people and getting a bit more fun out of your social life. Relationships enter a new period of positivity, and a partner should be going out of their way to be more encouraging while helping you do more to achieve your targets and ambitions. Don’t be afraid of breaking a few rules and trying something new.

HOROSCOPES YORK TIMES

creative side of your nature will also be highlighted, things bode well for the self-employed, especially if you are working in farming or any kind of conservation.

AQUARIUS 2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB

A mood of emotional calm and togetherness prevails at this time as old wounds and arguments are swept under the carpet. Good. Go out of your way to maintain this status quo! Some special celebration or social event around the 7th or 8th brightens up the calendar and anything to do with either the church or a religion affects your moods and your thinking. If you have any tech skills – computers and social media etc. you may well find your services are much in demand at this time.

The devolution deal will also see the first Mayor for York and North Yorkshire elected in May. A spokesperson for the City of York Council said, “While we are all rightly proud of where we live,

our region does face challenges, especially around housing, transport and the costof-living crisis. Making devolution a success means delivering for our residents and businesses by investing in sustainable and affordable housing, tackling the climate emergency, transforming transport and boosting our economy for the benefit of everyone.” For more of the latest news in York head to www.yourlocallink. co.uk.

Back in December the BBC reported that one person failed their driving theory test 59 times before finally passing last year, spending more than £1,000 in the process! On looking further into the subject, and reviewing the Department for Transport’s figures, we discovered that since 2007 the pass rate for the hour-long exams has dropped by as much as 20%. To make sure our readers don’t fall into the same traps; we’ve decided to put together some vital tips to get you well on your way to passing with flying colours!

Todd’s have you covered

Celebrating York’s finest family-run businesses

WE HEAR FROM LOCAL EXPERT MATT TODD The cost-of-living crisis does not appear to be going away any time soon so what can Todd’s do to help if one of your appliances fails and leaves you in the lurch? New appliances are extremely good value these days but, depending on the age of your old washer, cooker, or fridge freezer, it’s always worth exploring any cheap repair options that could prolong the life of the product you’ve already paid for. Unless you have a really premium product, we tend to only recommend repairs on products under five years old, but it’s always worth talking to us before you buy – there are tips and tricks we can recommend that might get a “faulty” product working without having to spend anything at all! We can also help you to decide whether a repair is worth pursuing or not – this will depend on variables such as the amount of use the machine has had, its age, and original cost, alongside the likely value of any labour or parts that might be required. Ultimately, if you decide that a new machine is the best path forward, then rest assured that we have

nationally price-matched products to suit all budgets — with under-counter fridges from £79.99, washers from £229.99, dishwashers from £249.99, microwaves from £69.99 and air fryers from only £99.99! We have hundreds of products in stock at our Monks Cross showroom, so whatever appliance you need, we stock it! We offer a same-day delivery service (if ordered before 11am), a regular next-day delivery service or you can use our cash and carry service – we even bring the product to your car. Our “All Sorted” service costs mean you can save money if you would like a hands-free installation. This includes removing and recycling your old machine and packaging, we even test the new machine and offer basic instructions. If you would like to check out our range before you visit please check out www.htodd.co.uk or www. euronics.co.uk or give us a call on 01904 628676 – we’re here to help; whether it’s time to repair or replace we can save you money and hassle!

HAVE YOU GOT A GARDENING QUESTION?

BY G A R DE NING E NT HU S IAST

Scott Turner

If you have a question for Scott, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk Q. I have some dogwood plants in my garden. Could you give me some advice of when I should prune them please? Many deciduous shrubs are grown mainly for their coloured stems, but when left to get larger they can produce beautiful flowers, fruit, and different coloured foliage. To achieve this, allow them to develop unpruned. Restrict the spread, if necessary, by cutting out one in four old shoots each year. This will also encourage new growth from the base. Neglected plants can be renovated by cutting out old wood at the centre of the bush. When cultivars are grown for their stem effect, allow the bush to grow unpruned in the first year after planting. Then cut all stems

back to 5cm (2”) from the ground. In subsequent years, cut all stems back to two of the previous year’s growth. Here are some examples of dogwood: CORNUS ALBA SIBIRICA. This dogwood is one of the best in cultivation for its red stems. CORNUS SANGUENEA ‘WINTER BEAUTY’. This dogwood produces fiery orange-yellow stems at the base, shading to pink and red at the tips, Its leaves turn goldenyellow in autumn. CORNUS STOLONIFERA ‘FLAVIRAMEA’. The greenish yellow winter shoots of this dogwood are brighter in the winter sun, if regularly pruned. CORNUS ALBA ‘KESSELRINGI’. Produces dark purple stems late into winter.

Q. Can you recommend some ferns for a damp shady site in a garden? Of all the nonflowering perennials, ferns are easily the most garden-worthy,

offering an exciting variety of shapes and heights for use as specimen plants or in bold groupings. Most of the following ferns are of medium to large size and will thrive given humus (rich soil), moisture and shade. ASLENIUM SCHOLOPENDRIUM. This bold fern is easily recognised by its long leathery, evergreen fronds, marked beneath with stripes of brown spores. ANTHURIUM ‘RED BEAUTY’. You’ll find finely divided, herbaceous leaves on this fern, that are thin and metal grey with purpled red veins. ASLPENIUM ADIANTUM-NIGREM. A tough little evergreen fern with wiry black stalks and triangular leathery, shiny green fronds. DRYOPTERIS ERYTHROSORA. One of the most colourful of hardy ferns. In spring and summer its coppery red fronds contrast with the shiny dark green winter fronds. DRYOPTERIS WALLICHIANA. The erect fronds of this lovely fern

form a big, semi-evergreen shuttlecock with dark scaly stalks. Its fronds grow taller when rich soil and shelter are provided. OSMUNDA REGALIS ROYAL FERN. An impressive fern forming a bold clump of multiple fronds that often colour richly in autumn before dying back. It produces spikes of red-brown spores in summer. POLYSTICHUM POLYBLEPHARUM. The distinctive shuttlecock of prickle-toothed, much divided fronds is covered at first with golden hairs. It’s particularly effective when planted with other ferns. Planting any fern in damp shaded areas will brighten any garden. These plants always shine. Get in touch today if you have a gardening question at info@ yourlocallink.co.uk.

WEDDING GARDENING GUIDE

THE RISE OF THE KALETTES Every so often a particular vegetable gets talked up in gardening and cooking magazines and websites. Black Tuscan kale, or Nero di Toscana in Italian, was all the rage recently. Such was the hype that it’s now found on supermarket shelves and veg plots where the gardener is a bit avantgarde. If you’re not a fad-following foodie, black Tuscan has elongated, non-curly, dark blue-green leaves that are carried on plants that reach up to a metre in height. Like other kale, it’s primarily an autumn and winter crop. I gave black Tuscan a try for a couple of years but wasn’t much impressed. The plants did crop quite well in late autumn and the leaves did seem tenderer than other kales. However, as winter set-in, the plants became bedraggled with leaves and its shoots turned slimy well before spring. Given this experience I was sceptical when kalettes, a similar vegetable —in that it is also a brassica (cabbage family) plant — burst on the scene. Sometimes also referred to as ‘flower sprouts’ or ‘petit posy’, kalettes first took off about ten years ago after promotion by a major upmarket food retailer and features in trendy culinary columns. Unlike black Tuscan kale, which goes back centuries, it’s a completely new

vegetable. Bred by British seed company Tozer using traditional (non-GM) techniques, it’s a cross between kale and Brussel sprouts. In appearance the plant looks closest to kale, usually reaching a metre in height and having curly blueish green leaves with purple stalks. The part eaten, the actual kalettes, are florets or rosettes of loose frilly-edged buttons that are three-to-five centimetres in width and are carried, like Brussel sprouts, on a long stalk. As with both parents, it’s a winter crop, in season from late October to early April. I first gave kalettes a try three years ago. The plants started in the same way as kale, sown in module trays in May with the seedlings planted out in late June spaced about 50-centimetres apart. As with all brassicas, netting was used to fend off pigeons and butterflies. The plants grew well and began to produce edible-sized florets around Christmas time that continued well into spring. Buoyed by this success, kalettes are now part of my repertoire —with thirty odd plants growing this winter. These were started a touch earlier than in previous years, to try and get a slightly faster harvest. As I write in late January there have been several pickings but, overall cropping hasn’t been much quicker. Perhaps this is down to several cold

spells, but my guess is that kalettes are essentially a crop for later in winter and into early spring. In many ways this tardiness is a plus. Unlike black Tuscan kale that seems to be exhausted by Christmas, kalettes have enough staying power to help fill the ‘hungry gap’— that time in early spring when there’s not a lot of fresh produce to harvest. This alone makes kalettes worth a spot on any plot, but there are plenty of other reasons to give them a go. A big plus is that they’re an undemanding crop, as easy to grow as kale. In the kitchen, there’s none of the fiddly peeling usually needed with sprouts. Better still, like lots of brassicas, kalettes are good for you. Frequently feted as a

‘superfood’, they’re rich in vitamins C and K. What’s more, they should appeal to even the most reluctant brassica eaters as they taste much sweeter than Brussel sprouts and are much less chewy than most kales— including black Tuscan! Ultimately, I’ve had to say arrivederci to the former favourite.

Macmillan Cancer Support unveil plans to revive York Hospital’s Cancer Care Centre A ‘gold standard’ centre — designed to provide vital support for people living with cancer— will be redeveloped at York Hospital due to a new partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support and York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The estimated £2.1m project will be funded by Macmillan and see the redevelopment of the hospital’s current Cancer Care Centre. The project will also be supported by York & Scarborough Hospitals Charity. It will be operated by the existing Cancer Health and Wellbeing Support Service and will provide information and support on a range of issues, from coping with treatment and care, to getting financial support. across the region and will offer a range of alternative forms of patient care. Angie Lunt, a patient representative who has worked closely with Macmillan and the Trust to develop plans for the centre, has lived experience of breast cancer and provided care for her late mother. She said “I can’t stress how important these centres are. There is a place for everyone which does wonders for mental health and general wellbeing. We need this safe, welcoming place for anyone affected by cancer now and in the future.” To read more about Macmillan’s plans for cancer care in York head to www.macmillan.org.uk.

CITY COUNCIL LAUNCH A CAMPAIGN TO ENCOURAGE RESIDENTS AWAY FROM SMOKING. This January, the City of York Council made combatting smoking one of their new year priorities. Rather than encouraging people to “give up”, they argued for the gains. Pointing out that swapping cigarettes for (much cheaper) nicotine alternatives like gum and patches have huge financial benefits, whilst adding

34

that complete nicotine independence can have huge advantages for mental health. Peter Roderick, Director of Public Health at City of York Council, said “There is a misconception that smoking relieves anxiety, when in fact it creates it. The relief that people feel when they have a cigarette is because they are

giving their body the drug (nicotine) that it has been withdrawing from.” The key to progress lies in getting people to the stage at which they’re ready to move away from tobacco. Unlike traditional cigarettes, nicotine replacement products can be gradually reduced until they are no longer needed at all. Studies

show that once a person is nicotine free, their mental health will dramatically improve. To sign up for the council’s free service, complete the online referral form, message 07789 946 384, call 01904 553377, or email cychealthtrainers@york. gov.uk.

Even though addiction can appear to be an inescapable cycle, there are certain local solutions, like the support provided by addiction specialist Sally Neal, that can make a real difference. She offers a discreet service from her therapy room in central York. This support is tailored for individuals who harbour concerns about their own substance use or that of someone close to them. She supplies 1-to-1 sessions (in-person or via zoom) where she’ll explore each client’s current circumstances to help them decide on the kind of change they want to see in their lives — and how to get there. Couple or family sessions are also available, to help restore that vital communication in each person’s family relationships, to help support the process of change. If you would like an informal chat to see if this is something that could be of value to you, either visit the website addictionstherapy.uk or call / message on 07883016294.

Charles III's cancer diagnosis should serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of prioritizing our health. Whilst shocking, his diagnosis —and the encouraging news that his majesty’s cancer was caught early— demonstrates how important regular health check-ups are. No one should ever be too busy to keep in touch with a medical professional about their health. Statistics from Cancer Research UK reveal that early detection saves lives— nearly all women diagnosed

earliest stage survive for at least five years, compared to only three out of ten diagnosed at the most advanced stage. The same goes for men — NHS data shows that more than two thirds of men over the age of 75 who are diagnosed with prostate cancer survive, further highlighting the difference that can be made by keeping your health check-ups as regular as possible. Call your doctor to make an appointment now or head to www.england. nhs.uk/cancer for more information about screening.

Find the Funeral that suits you Whilst no one wants to spend too much time dwelling on the tragic day when a loved one passes away, it’s still well worth ensuring you’re prepared to give that person the extra special send-off they deserve and create the healing needed for those left behind. To make that conversation much easier, Yorkbased Last Wishes Funerals are offering Open House Events on Saturday 16th, and Tuesday 19th of March from 11am until 3pm — where they’ll outline their unique and fresh approach to end-of-life services. Funeral director Chris Dudzinska says, “Come and meet some of the people I work with. We

listen carefully and support wholeheartedly during difficult times, whether you are simply wanting to explore your options, facing a terminal illness, or planning the funeral of a loved one”. Attending one of these sessions is the perfect way to learn how to transform sorrow into serenity —making a sombre occasion into something much more uplifting. The pet crematorium in York will also be represented on both Open Days. If you have any questions or just want to chat before the event, feel free to get in touch with Chris on 01904 763335.

Give us a home Can you help us to find a loving home for these brilliant characters?

Buttery McCorkindale, Male, 8 months Introducing Buttery McCorkindale, the 8-month-old male cat who found his way to Cats Protection alongside other feline friends from a MultiCat Household. His initial experience was stressful, leaving him a shy and fearful cat. With time under our care, he's gradually building trust.

Barney, Male, 2 Years. Barney is a wonderful boy who came to the centre via the Dog Warden. Sadly, Barney had an injured back leg which resulted in him having to have it amputated. Barney is an absolute gem of a dog and has taken all of this in his stride, he is a very brave boy who deserves the very best home.

Snowy, Female, 31/2 years. Snowy came to the centre as sadly her previous owner could no longer keep her. She is a really sweet girl who just craves attention, as soon as you start to stroke her, she purrs her little head off. She is suitable to live with children aged 8 years and over and will need to be the only cat in the home.

Breeze, Male, 8 weeks. Breeze was rescued after an inspector found that his needs and those of his five siblings were not being met. After a difficult start to life, Breeze the puppy is looking out for a loving set of adopters who are at home most of the time.

For more information about Buttery head to www.cats.org.uk/ york and for further details about Breeze, Snowy, and Barney head to www.rspca-yorkhome.org.uk.

DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS:

Introducing Home Care for Older Relatives Conversations about care are a sensitive topic that requires careful consideration. If you have ageing parents, grandparents, or other relatives, you may have broached it before and certainly won’t be alone if you were faced with reluctance. A common and understandable concern is a loss of independence. However, introducing occasional support early-on can help manage this. They won’t feel overwhelmed by frequent visits and will see how care promotes independence. Afterall, a good care company is there to support people in carrying on living their normal day-to-day life — from facilitating a walk, to driving to the local shops, to helping prepare their favourite meals. As well as introducing support early-on, starting with a short-term service can sometimes be beneficial. After the first few visits, it is not uncommon for them to start to enjoy the support, companionship, and new relationships they have formed with Care Professionals.

Equally, an initial ‘trial period’ will help them to understand how careat-home can work as you build a relationship with a trusted provider for the future. It is vitally important to keep your relatives part of any decisionmaking process — from the type of support, to frequency of visits, to provider of choice. All good care companies will answer any questions and, before starting any support, should always visit in-person to discuss your loved one’s wishes. Conclusion Approaching the topic of home care for older relatives with effective communication is crucial. By focusing on independence, involving them in decisions and offering trial options, you can create a plan that ensures their wellbeing while respecting their autonomy.

Time Travel WOM EN ’ S H I STO RY IN YO RK As International Women’s Week arrives in York this March, we thought we’d look back into York’s rich history to celebrate the brilliant and diverse female voices that strived hard against all odds — and the forces of patriarchy— to make their mark on our city. From ambitious businesswomen and academy-award-winning actors to the ground-breaking influencers of today, read on to hear everything about the inspirational women who have shaped our city. Grace White, Stonegate (1720s) As the only northern city with an official license to print, seventeenth-century York had one of the most important printing industries in the country. When John White — one of the city’s most prominent printers— passed away and left half of his printing business to his wife Grace, she had

all the tools she needed to pioneer the creation of York’s first-ever newspaper! The York Mercury was sold from York to Hull and printed on her own press in Coffee Yard, Stonegate. Ann Ward, Coney Street (1759-1789) Similarly to Grace White, Ann Ward also inherited a sizable printing business at the death of her husband. Ward managed what was one of the largest printing operations anywhere in the region for 30-years. One of her first actions was to publish two volumes of Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne in 1759 — a seminal English novel that is still taught in universities around the world to this day. Annie Coultate – Melbourne Street, York (1910s) Annie was one of the founders of York’s WSPU (Women's Social and Political Union) that organised meetings, gave out leaflets, and sold the Votes For Women newspaper, helping raise vital funds for the cause of women’s suffrage. She was also an instrumental local figure in the movement to evade the 1911 National Census. Dame Judi Dench, Heworth. (1934present). Judi Dench may have made her

name in the Royal Shakespeare Company and Hollywood, but she was actually born in Heworth! After starring in the York Mystery Plays in the Museum Gardens in the 1950s, she later won a place at the London Central School of Speech and Drama, after which superstardom would await! Today, a walk at the bottom of Lendal Tower is named after Judi Dench — to remind all passers-by that the 1998 Academy Award winner is one of our own!

Hello March... The start of 2024 has flown by, and the summer season is fast approaching. This year one of the questions we have frequently been asked is where to consider for a milder summer break— where the temperature is likely to be closer to the comfortable mid–late 20s and less scorching hot. This month we are sharing the four best places to consider. Madeira is located in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the northwest coast of Africa (around a fourhour flight from the UK). Thanks to that Atlantic breeze, summer temperatures average a maximum of 25 degrees. Evenings are a little cooler so we would recommend packing a light jacket just in case. It’s a great destination for scuba diving, surfing, and whale watching—take a toboggan ride in a wicker basket through the streets of Funchal or, if you are a football fan, head over to the CR7 (Cristiano Ronaldo) museum. Over recent years, Madeira has adapted to

appeal to a wider range of guests, from families to solo travellers, and couples, and is even suited to multigenerational trips. Scandinavia offers a short flight (Manchester to Oslo, Norway can be done in just 1hr and 40 minutes) and July temperatures average out at a high of 23 degrees! The region has everything on offer, from iconic Nordic capitals and picturesque villages, to dramatic coastlines. Choose to cruise the Norwegian Fjords, take a family trip to Legoland in Denmark, opt for a multi-centre tour by train, or choose to self-drive. The Canary Islands are not only a great close-to-home option for winter sun, but its summer temperatures —with average highs of 28 degrees— make it more comfortable than most eastern Mediterranean destinations. The Canary Island of Lanzarote has it all. With beach resorts like Playa Blanca, Costa Teguise, and Puerto Del Carmen, there’s something for families of all ages. If you do

fancy a break from the main tourist areas hire a car and visit the Timanfaya National Park where you can feel the heat coming from the rock of the dormant volcano, alternatively, you can go wine tasting in La Geria, or visit the town of Teguise, once the capital of Lanzarote. Thinking of somewhere a little further afield? The Indian Ocean Island of Mauritius will offer July average high temperatures of 24/25 degrees. It’s accessible via a direct 12-hour flight from London. A range of hotels are on offer, from luxury all-inclusives to golf resorts and even bubble lodges at a tea plantation! The destination also offers wildlife experiences, amazing beaches as well as hiking opportunities in the Black River Gauge, snorkelling, and scuba diving. Could a career in care be for you?

RECRUITMENT

JOBS, JOBS, JOBS, JOBS The Wilberforce Trust are one of York’s oldest charities— they’ve been providing specialist sensory services for those affected by sight loss since 1833! To learn a little more about the inspirational and rewarding work they do, empowering people to make their own choices and have control of their lives, we sat down with one of their experienced support workers. Here’s what Shaun had to say. What inspired you to choose to work for the Wilberforce Trust? — what makes it special? I loved that it was all about helping people to live independently. What part of the week do you look forward to the most? I like the 1-2-1 hours. The time we spend with individual people doing activities. Normal activities like going to the café, or the cinema— just normal daily things.

D.P. Plastics & Roofing

What part of your role do you think is the most important? Helping people to be independent but keeping them safe at the same time. Encouraging people to try things they might not have thought to try, to have confidence to try something new.

Which memory/ achievement from working at the Trust are you most proud of? Recently I have been the first person to support a new tenant, who had some challenging behaviour that some have found difficult, and I’ve built a good relationship with them. What would you say to someone considering starting a career in care? Just do it! There are challenges but you find your way. It’s rewarding and you meet and spend time with some really great people. If you’d like to learn more about signing up as a carer head to www.wilberforcetrust.org.uk or call 01904 760037.
