WALKING WITH THE WANDERER
There are a number of good walks from Tadcaster but this is perhaps the best. Starting in the town, it heads east then north to the remarkably unspoilt village of Healaugh before turning back on an easily followed track. The final stretch joins the river crossing it on the imposing viaduct, now a foot and cycle way.
IS THIS WALK FOR ME?
Although seven miles long, this is an undemanding walk. The terrain is almost entirely flat but can be muddy, especially after Direction Point 3. On the roadside section (Direction Point 4) there is virtually no traffic. The path beside the river (Direction Point 9) may be impassable after flooding, in which case follow either the road or cycle path beyond the viaduct into Tadcaster. There are two stiles near the end which can be avoided by remaining on the road at Direction Point 8.
GETTING THERE
The recommended starting point is the free public carpark at the bus station just before the river bridge in the centre of Tadcaster. Tadcaster is ten miles from York via the A64. Regular Coastliner 840 and 843 buses operate from several stops in York to Tadcaster bus station.
REFRESHMENTS
There are plentiful pubs and a few cafes in Tadcaster but no options en route.
WHAT TO SEE
Soon after the start, the walk parallels Catterton Rush; an area of native woodland awash with bluebells in spring. Healaugh is one of the Vale of York’s most unspoilt villages with a range of individual house styles and an ancient church set on a small hill with good views. The return to Tadcaster follows a track across well cared for farmland. The impressive viaduct in Tadcaster is a curious feature, never having been used as part of a mainline railway.
1. Leave the carpark/bus station on the right side of the waiting area and cross the main road at pedestrian lights. Turn right uphill to traffic lights. Then turn left (Wighill Lane). Follow this through bends for about 300-metres. Just after trees and open land appear to the left, find a stoned track on the right. It is a signed bridleway that leads beside an older house.
2. Follow this track as it soon bends to the left. You will pass a farm, then a house to the right. Shortly after a right-hand bend, reach a track junction. Here, keep ahead (right) on an earth track, soon between hedges. Ignore a field path left to approach a farm.
3. Do not go right with the track towards the house, but instead walk diagonally across an open area heading to the right of an open-sided barn to find a track. Follow this with a wire fence to the right for a short distance until you reach a concrete bridge. Do not cross but instead turn right on a narrow path with a fence right. The path soon goes left over a footbridge into a large, usually cultivated, field. The official right-of-way heads straight on over the field. However, it is easier to follow the practice of most walkers and turn right alongside the stream to the field corner. Here turn left (do not go ahead) with the wood to the right. Continue for about 700 metres until the wood ends. Keep ahead on the path that widens to a track. Continue to reach a tarmac road.
4. Turn left on the road following it between hedges and through bends for over 1,500 metres to the edge of Healaugh village. At the road junction in the village keep ahead (left) on the main street between the older houses. Remain on the street as it bends left and right to exit the village with the church on its hillock to the right (to visit the church take the gravel path at the first bend).
5. About 175-metres beyond the right bend look out for an unsigned track on the left guarded by a green metal barrier. Take this track (it’s a public bridleway) passing a wood to the right. Ignore a signed footpath right staying on the track as it later angles sharply right. At a T-junction go right again (not through the gates with the yellow arrow). Continue to a metal barrier, keeping ahead on a short stretch of tarmac with houses and farm buildings right.
6. At the end of the buildings pass another barrier and continue on the hedged track. This soon goes left then passes through a series of double bends. About 200 metres beyond a small wood (on the left) reach a track T-junction with a hedge gap to your left.
7. Here, be sure to turn right (permissive footpath notice). Pass another metal barrier and ignore a drive to a house on the right, eventually reaching a road.
8. Turn left on the narrow pavement. In about 400-metres find a gate/stile in the wall on the opposite side of the road.

9. Go over and walk diagonally across the field to the far corner. Cross another stile and follow the riverside path to the viaduct. Pass under this and then ascend the steps to cross over the viaduct. On the other side descend steps then enter the grassy field keeping ahead to the river bank. Now follow the riverside path which soon becomes paved.
Pass the church and continue to the main road at the river bridge.
Cross and return to the carpark/bus station.

Statutory Sick Pay: What is it and why is it so controversial?
Andrew Macauley
A commonly criticised area of employment law is that of Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), with near yearly calls from charities, unions and politicians alike that reform is needed. Whilst many employers have their own sick pay schemes, where employees receive full pay for sickness absence, there is no legal entitlement to anything other than SSP.
What is SSP?
Statutory Sick Pay is the legal minimum entitlement to sick pay. You are entitled to receive SSP for all days you are off sick that you normally would have worked, except the first 3. These 3 days are unpaid.
To receive SSP, the following criteria must be met:
1. You must be an employee and have worked for your employer
2. You must earn an average of at least £123 per week (known as the Lower Earnings Limit)
3. You must have been ill for more than 3 days in a row (including non-working days)
As of 6 April 2024, the current rate of SSP is £116.75 per week and is paid by the employer and is payable for up to 28 weeks.
Problems with SSP and Proposed Changes
A regular critique of SSP is that it does not provide adequate support for employees, especially those in financial hardship. This is a combination of the fact that SSP is only a fraction of what an average employee would receive for their normal wages (based on average UK salaries) and that employees do not receive any pay for sickness absence of less than 3 days.
The Centre for Progressive Change's "Safe Sick Pay" Campaign highlights that around one third of working people in the UK only receive SSP and there are three main elements to their campaign:
1. Remove the waiting period for sick pay for all absences.
2. Abolish the Lower Earnings Limit for Statutory Sick Pay, which would extend coverage to an estimated two million workers.
3. Increase sick pay so that it is in line with an employee’s wages, up to the living wage.
This has been echoed in the House of Commons Work and Pensions Committee’s report from March 2024, calling on the government to substantially overhaul SSP ahead of the 2025-26 financial year. The Committee also suggest the removal of the Lower Earnings Limit and propose increasing sick pay to be in line with Statutory Maternity Pay, which would increase SSP to either the weekly SMP rate or 90% of average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. This would be a considerable increase and would go some way to alleviating concerns that SSP fails to protect those in financial difficulties.
Whilst there are no proposed reforms to SSP as of yet, this is likely to change, given the Committee’s suggestions to the government.
If you would like assistance in relation to SSP or for further advice, the employment lawyers at Hethertons will be here to help.
Our expert team of lawyers are on hand to help if you need further advice or guidance. Call us on 01904 528223.

TAURUS 20TH APR – 20TH MAY
Rather a mystical month when a number of situations seem to come full circle. In some ways a challenging month and not always an easy one, but at least you’ll feel you have achieved something worthwhile by the end of it. Travel aspects bode well in the first half of the month and many of you will be visiting places you’ve never been before. Relationships seem sound and solid, but partners will have some high expectations of you.
GEMINI 21ST MAY – 20TH JUN
One of those months when you must go with the flow. Avoid conflict on all levels (remember it takes two to argue) and avoid making any major decisions. If this frustrates others who expect you to leap into action, then let them be
frustrated. Having said all that, the 4th of the month is a day when you could well start getting the answers to many of the questions you have been asking lately.
CANCER 21ST JUN – 22ND JUL
This will unashamedly be a better
BY ASTROLOGIST
James Christie
month for the blokes than for others, especially those who know what they want and what they need to do to get it. Legal dealings and bureaucracy figure around the 14th and 15th leading to brighter and more confident moods towards the month’s end.
LEO 23RD JUL – 22ND AUG
Probably much to your own surprise, May could well turn out to be a very romantic and emotionally satisfying month, but be warned, there will be some divided loyalties involving priorities. It is to be hoped that you’ve got the gumption to put your heart before your head. I guess this energy affects all of you, but the under 30s will feel it most. The 6th brings you into contact with a new friend and ally.
VIRGO 23RD AUG – 22ND SEPT
Now, my dears, be just a bit canny and careful throughout May, because what might seem like a brilliant opportunity could lead you into a minefield of complications. The sixes are relevant here – the 6th, 16th, and 26th. If travel plans and work schedules need to be changed, change ‘em rather than trying to force something through that does not want to be forced.
Gentlemen should be of particular assistance to the women in their lives.
LIBRA 23RD SEPT – 22ND OCT
May is unlikely to be an “easy” month because whatever you’ve got, it won’t be all that you want, and just like the rest of us, you’ll want more! Good news is that you can have it, but it’s a long game of softly softly catchy monkey. Take care on the 7th not to overreach yourself, and be content to find clarity with regard to future targets and ambitions. While you are attracted to the bird in the bush, do not undervalue the bird in the hand.
SCORPIO 23RD OCT – 21ST NOV
Knowledge, learning, education… All relevant this month. If you’ve got any kind of “test” coming up, driving or medical, you can afford to be very confidant. Where romances and relationships are concerned, be prepared to give a little, and you stand to gain a lot. The events of May 10th to the 14th should bring confirmation of this statement. Money being spent on new self-image seems like cash well spent – just avoid grey and go for bright colours.

SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV – 21ST DEC
You are more than entitled to your opinions and points of view, but May might be a good month to soften your stance a little and avoid being too argumentative. If here is some resistance to your timetables and agendas, find compromises and avoid confrontation. Regardless of how you see yourself, other folk see you as being a “strong” person and there are times when you can be a bit intimidating. Let those times not be now!
CAPRICORN 22ND DEC – 19TH JAN
All in all, quite an exciting month! Travel aspects (early-month) tie in with some very welcome reunions with moods of parties and celebrations. In some ways, it’s a very exciting month - so think on this. Just what is going to get you excited these days? No angles, no agendas. In relationships with partners and spouses, the “other half” seems to be going out of their way to please.
AQUARIUS 2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB
A wheeling dealing Machiavellian kind of month, full of schemes and secret plans, and when who you know is more important than
anything you can actually do. An important journey in the first 10 days or so opens some new contacts with old friends.
PISCES 19TH FEB – 20TH MAR
Parent/child relationships go through a very positive period, and there could be news of a pregnancy or birth… Around the 6th or maybe the 7th? Leisure and pleasure pursuits are the order of the day, and (sorry about the cliché) this is a brilliant time for making contact with the child inside. Unexpected presents (obviously nothing to do with birthdays) make you smile… an indication of someone’s appreciation rather than a romantic love token.
ARIES 21ST MAR – 19TH APR
A busy and productive month, especially for the self-employed. You work away steadily at routine projects, but then on the 13th (I think) some sort of short cut or lucky break drops into your lap. Hopefully you will see it for what it is and take full advantage! It is a month for building – new relationships, broken bridges, or conservatories and kitchen extensions. The principle remains the same!

Is your business worthy of an award?
Every business deserves the chance to get more plaudits for all the work they do, with a pandemic and cost of living crisis to contend with over the last few years, simply keeping the lights on and the engines running required a miraculous effort. It’s because of this, that the Enterprise Works team at the University of York have launched their 2024 Enterprise Awards — to give back a little appreciation for the businesses in York who have made a real difference. They’re looking
for the change-makers, disruptors and the businesses that have made an impact in our community. The honours on offer range from exceptional leadership and inclusivity to growth and community impact. The winners will be announced at a ceremony at Merchant Adventurers' Hall in July.
If you reckon your businesses is worthy of selection, make sure to apply by for an Enterprise Award by the 31st of May. Head to www.york. ac.uk/enterpriseworks to view the full award listings.

What is a flexible working request?
A FWR is a request, by an employee, to alter their work pattern. For example, a change in hours or days worked, the shift pattern they are on, etc.
There are two types of FWR:-
1. Statutory FWR – those that are governed by statute which we will discuss below; and
2. Informal FWR – those that do not have the same requirements as statutory FWR. Nevertheless, we would advise that you treat them very similarly to statutory FWR.
What are the changes to statutory FWR?
The changes will take effect from 6 April 2024 and are as follows:-
Consultation required: No but advisable
What could we be doing now?
We would suggest the following:-
1. Review and update your FWR policy. If you do not have one, get one drafted.
2. Inform those employees who are likely going to be dealing with FWR on your organisation’s behalf about the changes and train them on your updated policy.
3. Ensure your FWR policy is readily available to the people at point 2, above, so that they are ready to deal with them when they land.
What happens if we get an FWR wrong?
Getting FWR wrong primarily lead to claims for discrimination. However, there are other claims that may also arise, such as constructive unfair dismissal. So they are worth taking seriously.
Is it worth getting my FWR policy and documents reviewed professionally?
Absolutely! We have a range of documents that you may wish to consider to implement, to ensure that any FWR is dealt with properly. We can also assist your organisation during any FWR process. Not convinced? Try giving us a call on 07842 225836 for a free 20-minute consultation.

York City F.C. Report: May 24
By Sammi Minion
We ended last month’s report with the Minstermen at a real crossroads. I believe my final words were along the lines that the new boss, Adam Hinshelwood, had eight games to save York City from an embarrassing return to regional football. Well, it appears he might have done just that. While there are still plenty of challenges ahead, City have climbed, at least for now, from 21st to 17th in the table.
Last month we left them, four points from safety — they are now four points clear of the relegation zone. What makes the rise even more exceptional is that no-one, not even the most enthusiastic of City fans, could have seen this coming.
From the outside, the month’s fixtures appeared virtally unwinnable. But what followed was a series of victories over teams that past-form suggested York had no right to beat. Seventh-place Aldershot, thirdplace Bromley, and the most shocking of all — Hinshelwood’s men came from behind to defeat champions-elect Chesterfield F.C. on Good Friday. Despite conceding an opener from Joe Quigley in the sixth minute, the Minstermen did not let their heads drop for a second, as they held the
Spireites to just the one goal for the rest of the half. As City continued to grow into the game they were eventually rewarded for their bravery. Maziar Kouhyar struck home in the 54th minute, before last summer’s star signing Dipo Akinyemi completed the comeback. Then against all odds the Minstermen held out until the end of an agonising 97-minute game to claim a massive three points, giving those loyal city fans, who have had very little to celebrate since the turn of the year, the bank holiday weekend of their dreams. Their next game, an away fixture vs local rivals Halifax Town, just four days later (although originally scheduled for Easter Monday and postponed thanks to a waterlogged pitch) might have carried the club even further. An Akinyemi opener in the 74th minute had City fans dreaming of a perfect month— until the very dying embers of the game, when Town’s Robert Harker equalized. Ultimately, Adam Hinshelwood may not have been able to deliver on the kind of optimistic goals many fans had envisaged at the start of the season when the Uggla ownership began, like playoffs or at least a top half finish. However, with the time
he's been given, he has all but confirmed safety, allowing those goals and ambitions to reset at the start of next season. For his success in restoring pride at the LNER Community Stadium, Hinshelwood was even recognised by the National League and made their Manager of the Week on April the 3rd. In other news, there have been a few incomings and outgoings around the club in the last few weeks, with goalkeeper Maison Campbell recalled from his loan at Scunthorpe, Sam Fishburn signed on a youth loan from Fleetwood Town, and Will Davies sent on loan to Bromley.
York City F.C. face Eastleigh, Woking, and Solihull Moors in their final few National League fixtures as they look to secure safety. Follow updates at www. yourlocallink.co.uk.
YORK’S OWN “HARDEST GEEZERS” TO TAKE ON CHARITY COAST-TO-COAST RIDE
Seven local heroes will undertake a mammoth effort to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity later this month. Inspired by one of their best friends Paul Firth, who was diagnosed with a rare grade two Oligodendroglioma tumour in March 2023, the group will embark on an inspiring journey from Blackpool to Scarborough, cycling coast-to-coast in just three days, from May 25th to May 27th.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including an awake craniotomy, six weeks of radiotherapy, and ongoing chemotherapy, Paul remains steadfast in his fight against this disease. In true testament to his character, not only will Paul be accompanying the peloton in their support van, but also hopes to join in for at least some part of the ride! One of the cyclists, Simon, Paul's best friend, understands the battle all too well. Having undergone his own brain tumour diagnosis in 1996, Simon has since recovered and embraced a full life, fuelled by his passion for cycling. "It's about supporting Paul and raising awareness," says Simon. "This ride is a testament to his strength and the strength of everyone battling brain tumours."

Rise of the machines
WE HEAR FROM LOCAL EXPERT MATT TODD
Is the inclusion of AI in your washing machine a cause for concern or comfort?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is everywhere and will inevitably be part of your life whether you like it or not, but is it all good news or are there downsides to the technology that we need to know about? You might be surprised to learn that AI has been around for years. Even before that, we had fuzzy logic built into household appliances that meant they could make decisions on-the-fly based on feedback from various sensors inside the machine, this could for example, mean that a wash cycle would be brought to an end early if the sensors told the washing machine the garments were clean. AI will just build on those foundations so that future models will be more energyefficient (and remain efficient even as the machine ages or detergents change etc. through seamless connectivity) with greater sustainability and enhanced user friendliness. Your machine will understand you and the way you
wash your clothes, it may make recommendations to help you save money or take better care of your fabrics, and it will know if some of its parts are wearing out and suggest to you that it pro-actively contacts a repair agent (robot?) to come with the right parts and keep things in tip top condition. Of course, it may decide that it doesn’t really like washing clothes and go off to join the circus! Find out more about the latest tech in home appliances, televisions, kitchens and bathrooms please drop in to our store on Monks Cross Drive, York, we’re here to help!

PUMPKINS AND SQUASHES
It’s always surprised me that more gardeners don’t grow pumpkins and squashes. There’s a huge range to choose from, most of which are easy to cultivate. What’s more, pumpkins and squashes have many uses in the kitchen— even beyond soups and pies. Plus, many types of pumpkin will store well into winter. As I write in late March there are still a few stored pumpkins from last autumn’s harvest yet to be used.
If you want to grow pumpkins or squashes late May and early June is the time to get plants in the ground. Unless you’re growing a lot, or want to experiment with different varieties, it’s probably easier to buy young plants. You could sow seeds outside towards the end of May but germination can be poor, especially if the weather is cool or wet.
Beginning this way also gives you a slower start, reducing the time plants have to grow, meaning there will be fewer fruit and a delayed ripening. Another option is to sow into pots in late April/early May, then plant the seedlings outside about four weeks later. This works best if there’s a greenhouse or other protected space with full light. Windowsills aren’t ideal; seedlings tend to become spindly and weak. Regardless of how plants are started, do not have them growing outside and unprotected before the last weeks of May. Young pumpkin and squash plants are vulnerable to even the slightest nip of late spring frost.
As well as being sensitive to cold, most pumpkins and squash need plenty of space to crop well. It’s often recommended plants are set out as far as a metre apart. I tend to grow closer, at a 75cm distance, but many varieties are ‘trailers’, that is they’ll romp away in midsummer with the rampant foliage sprawling three metres
BY GARDENING
Tony Chalcraft
or more. Where space is limited, it is possible to grow plants vertically, training them up a framework. Make sure the support structure is strong and capable of bearing the weight of the crop. An alternative is to grow only so-called ‘bush’ varieties that have a ‘wingspan’ similar to a courgette plant.
At this point you may be wondering, is there much of a difference between pumpkin and squash?’ The short answer is not a lot. Botanically there’s no major distinction. All types belong to branches of the Cucurbita family. When it comes to the growing, varieties labelled as pumpkins tend to be slightly easier to grow than those described as squashes. This is especially true with butternut squash. Although hotter summers and new varieties are helping, in my experience these are still unreliable croppers in Yorkshire.
If you want something akin to a butternut but far easier to grow,
consider the pumpkin Crown Prince. This has grey-blue skin and deep orange flesh. It can easily reach the size of a dinner plate and stores extremely well. Most of all, it’s tasty and lends itself to all kinds of uses. It is a trailer though, so needs plenty of room. A squash alternative is the Gold Nugget variety. This is nontrailing and can produce four or more modest sized fruit per plant. But these are just two personal favourites. Pumpkins and squashes come in all shapes and sizes and in various intermingled subgroups. The Web will tell you more. Choose from acorns, buttercups, kuris, kabochas and patty pans to name check just a few types. And for novelty there’s always the curious tromboncionos, so-called because of their resemblance to a trombone.

Fortunately, The Nature Connectors, a forest school and wellbeing hub based in the Howardian hills, are running outdoor courses and sessions. They’re the perfect chance to build relationships with new people as you surround yourself with the beautiful landscapes of Ampleforth Abbey Orchards.
You can choose one of their three, 12-week courses (starting 23 April), to learn all sorts of new skills, such as nature crafts, bushcraft, and how to improve your wellbeing. These are perfect if you want to build friendships and create more resilience to help you ride life’s ups and downs.
Perhaps a Fireside Friendship Drop In is better suited. These unstructured sessions enable people to gather around for a good oldfashioned chat and eat food cooked
over the campfire. These Drop Ins start on the 22nd of April and run every other week throughout the year (except school holidays). They also run nature and wellbeing sessions for healthcare staff. These have already started, but with five more throughout the year, they are still available for GPs, charity and NHS staff who can make referrals. All courses and sessions are led by Alison and Georgia from the Nature Connectors, based at Ampleforth Abbey Orchards in the Howardian Hills. Ticket prices are heavily subsidised – and in some instances – free transport may be included – thanks The Howardian Hills Landscape Partnership. You’ll find more information here: www.thenatureconnectors.com or contact Alison for an informal chat: alison@thenatureconnectors.com.
Former York College student wins an Oscar
Following in the footsteps of the legend that is Dame Judy Dench, a former York College student became the latest former cityresident to win an Oscar this March.
Nadia Stacey, who studied at York College from 2004 to 2006, picked up the Best Makeup and Hairstyling award for her work on the movie Poor Things, ironically she looked anything but while waving the 13-inch gold trophy around the stage! Even though she's has had a successful career that’s taken her all-over the world, with stints on
Harry Potter and Marvel films, as well as some a little closer to home, like the hit TV drama Downton Abbey, Nadia still has a really close relationship with her former tutors in York. One those tutors, Sharon Barrington, said, “We extend our heartfelt congratulations and will be drinking a lovely cup of Yorkshire Tea to celebrate.” Although, if any of our Your Local Link alumni ever make it to the Oscars we reckon a Gin and Tonic might be a more fitting beverage! CARE HOMES VS HOME CARE: Making the right choice for your loved ones
By Ed Gill, Director of Radfield Home Care.
Choosing between care homes and home care services is a crucial decision when considering older relatives. Each has its own benefits and considerations.
CARE HOMES
Care homes offer a communal living environment with around-the-clock support from trained staff. Residents benefit from structured routines, organised activities, and social interaction opportunities. However, the support received can be less personalised than that of a one-to-one home care service.
HOME CARE SERVICES
Home care allows your loved ones to remain in their own homes while receiving much of the same support as in a care home - from companionship to personal care, to medication assistance. Care Professionals provide one-on-one support that ranges from as little as 60 minutes a week, up to 24-hour care, all tailored to the individual's needs and preferences. It promotes independence by maintaining familiar surroundings.
PERSONALISED CARE
Both care homes and home care services offer support with the activities of daily living, medication management, specialised care for conditions like dementia, as well as palliative support. Home care plans are flexible, allowing for adjustments as needs change over time.
COST
Care homes typically involve higher costs, including accommodation, meals, and care services. Home care services, on the other hand, are more affordable since clients pay only for the hours of care they receive.
FAMILY INVOLVEMENT
While care homes provide peace of mind with around-the-clock supervision and visiting hours for family members, home care services enable active family involvement in care planning and emotional support, where desired, while still maintaining a close relationship. In conclusion, the decision between care homes and home care services depends on factors such as care needs, preferences, financial resources, and family support. It's essential for families to thoroughly explore both options, consider the pros and cons, and make a decision that best meets the needs of their ageing loved ones. Consulting with healthcare professionals and utilising available resources can facilitate this important decision-making process.

Ben's Book Corner
We hear from avid book reader and creative writer, Ben Robinson who shares his monthly book recommendarions. Happy reading!
As the summer looms I always become excited about day trips to country parks, historical monuments, and medieval castles. With this in mind, here’s a selection of my favourite historical fiction books.
‘All The Light We Cannot See’ by Anthony Doerr - This book follows two young people in Europe throughout World War Two and their stories of loss and change. It captures the destruction of war, and the distance it put between loved ones.
‘Macbeth’ by William Shakespeare - Macbeth is undoubtedly one of the greatest
plays ever written. It follows the turmoil of Scotland prior to, and throughout, the terrible reign of King Macbeth. For those of you wanting something dark and chilling, this is the book for you.
‘Wolf Hall’ by Hilary Mantel - Set between 1500 and 1535 this fictionalised biography follows the rise to prominence of Thomas Cromwell in the court of Henry VIII, as well as the fall of his court and all those who were part of it. This is a story of romance, betrayal, war, and power, all with the backdrop of a turbulent Tudor England.
City Council extend Free School Meal pilot into 2025
Thanks to the allocation of an extra £100,000 of council funding, all the children in all of the year groups at Westfield Community Primary School will receive free school lunches until December 2025. Currently pupils in reception, Year 1 and Year 2 who attend statefunded schools in England already receive free lunches, but this scheme now includes Years 3-6 who, unless they have a household family income of less than £7,400, are usually exempt.
Pupils at Westfield have been eating their lunches for free since the start of the year, but this scheme was due to end in December. The extra cash will keep free lunches on the table for at least another 18 months.
To further develop the free school meals initiative, the council are relying on donations from residents and businesses. You can donate to their appeal at www. tworidingscf.org.uk/york-hungryminds.

This Month in History
This May we’re tracing back our steps to see what York’s historic residents were up to, and up against, in years and centuries past.
29 April, 1942 – York suffers its worst air raid of the Second World War. Beginning at 2.30am, the city endured 90 minutes of relentless bombardment, leaving 92 people dead and hundreds more injured. As well as civilian streets, houses, and schools, the iconic Guildhall buildings and St Martin-le-Grand Church on Coney Street were targeted and left to burn out.
2 May, 1916 - A German airship is spotted over the city at about 10.30pm. For the next ten minutes it dropped 18 bombs, destroying houses, killing nine people, and injuring 40 more.
4 May, 1471 - The Battle of Tewkesbury. A clash many consider to be the very last battle of the Wars of the Roses – the historical events that inspired George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones! The Yorkist King Edward IV put a Lancastrian rebellion
to bed by defeating and killing Edward, Prince of Wales.
20 May, 1604 - The first meeting between York-born Guy Fawkes and his fellow gunpowder plotters. Alone in a private room at the Duck and Drake Inn, just off the Strand in London, the five plotters swore an oath of secrecy on a prayer book.
26 May, 1838 - The death of Jonathan Martin. Martin had made his name a decade earlier when he set fire to York Minster. The blaze took all day to die down, taking 66 choir stalls, the galleries, the organ, the pulpit and the archbishop's throne with it. Martin was tried for arson but was acquitted on grounds of “insanity” so was sent to an asylum in Lambeth, London where he died. Historical dates and information were gathered from the archives at www.historyofyork.org.uk.

Peruvian peaks
In March I had the opportunity to join one of our suppliers, Latin Routes, for their agent academy in Peru. This gave me the chance to visit South America for the first time, and after all I experienced, it certainly won’t be my last visit to this vibrant continent.
My whistlestop trip started with the LATAM flight to Lima via Madrid. This overnight service meant an early arrival into Lima, and we hit the ground running immediately.
My hotel in Lima was the Iberostar Miraflores located in the Miraflores district, an area with some great restaurants and yet just under 10 minutes’ walk from the Pacific Ocean.
After dropping off my luggage and a quick freshen up, it was time to explore the city.
Lima is home to many historical landmarks and attractions, including the Plaza Mayor (Main Square), and is surrounded by colonial-era buildings such as the Government Palace and the Cathedral of Lima. My personal favourite was the Barranco area known for its bohemian
atmosphere, an excellent hotel to consider in this area is the Relais & Châteaux Hotel B.
My second day in Lima was spent networking with some amazing & niche providers from across South America before dinner at the Country Club Lima, a historic property with rooms featuring traditional Andean textiles. The hotel was originally opened in 1927 and has since been declared an official Peruvian Cultural Monument.
A concern for many when visiting Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu is the high altitude and the symptoms it can bring. This was something I shared, particularly as our filled itinerary did not leave much time to acclimatise. The local guides are great, they monitored us, if anyone felt unwell, they would give guidance and, in the unlikely event it was needed, additional oxygen could be arranged. There really is no rule to say who may suffer from the altitude, and across our group, we saw a real range of symptoms, from people who had

no symptoms or a slight headache to those who had to spend the first few hours relaxing in the hotel and keeping hydrated. Things to consider before arriving at the high altitude and whilst there:
Eat light. Avoid alcohol. Stay hydrated. In addition to water, have sports drinks such as Gatorade every so often.
Muña tea is also available within hotels and helps to alleviate symptoms.
After a short exploration of Cusco, it was time for an early night before we experienced the highlight of our trip, Machu Picchu. Due to the time of year, we travelled by road in the early morning to Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley to board the Peru Rail vistadome train to Machu Picchu.
The ancient Incan citadel is believed to have been built in the 15th century yet despite its significance, Machu Picchu was unknown to the outside world until it was brought to international attention by American historian
Hiram Bingham in 1911.
Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, daily visitor numbers are capped to avoid over tourism and to protect the site for future generations.
Thinking of travelling to Peru yourself? Get in touch to start discussions about options on 01904 623444 or visit 88 Main Street, Fulford.

Pan-Asian Afternoon Tea at Sora REVIEW
Anyone who’s been lucky enough to visit the Sora restaurant at Malmaison Hotel— (if you haven’t then this is your reminder to get booked in as soon as possible!) will be familiar with what I reckoned to be the best view of York’s skyline around. From their sky bar balcony, you’ll remember looking across the Ouse and seeing York at its best. A perfect combination of traditional architecture, like our thirteenth-century Minster, that has been intertwined with more modern tasteful adaptations and updates. The new menu we were invited down to Sora to try follows suit, combining one of York’s best trusted foodie exploits —the classic afternoon tea— with delicious influences from their pan-Asian inspired kitchen. Read on for tales of matcha scones, sushi, and braised pork belly — all on the same plate!
As soon as you arrive at Sora, it’s clear that this stunning seventh floor restaurant is a class above. The environment is elegantly decorated with beautiful Japanese-esque artwork and embellishments, and the views are exemplary. The rooms are brought to life by the natural light that pours in from giant windows all around. From the moment you sit down, it’s clear by the chopsticks— rather than knife and fork— at your table that this is no ordinary
afternoon tea. It was lucky for us, as chopstick amateurs, that Ethan, one of their lovely team members was on hand to offer a quick and simple lesson on how to use them. Then, just 30 minutes later, a tower of freshly cooked afternoon tea delights arrived in front of us. It included those hot and fluffy matcha scones, tempura prawns, and my personal favourite, the sweet and salty perfection of pulled pork, presented with a burnt apple puree. They were accompanied by a refreshing cucumber sesame salad, garnished with chopped chilli. The sushi, both California rolls and Tuna Gunkan, arrived fresh and crispy — and made for a faultless palate cleanser as we prepared for dessert. Whether you opt to finish off with the flavourful explosion of a mango coconut dome or decide on a brightly coloured blueberry bergamot roll, what is for certain is that you won’t be disappointed. In terms of menu, innovation, flavour, location, and atmosphere, Sora is an absolute must — they’ve provided an exciting update on one of our favourite meals that genuinely lives up to the hype. Sora is located at Malmaison Hotel on Rougier Street, head to www.malmaison.com/locations/ york/sora/ to have a look at the menu or call up on 01904 946060to book your seat.
While there’s no better way to see out a great weekend than with a proper slap-up Sunday Lunch— roast beef, Yorkshire puddings, crispy spuds and all the rest — the actual task of making it can often feel like a lot more effort than it’s worth. After all, who really wants to spend half their Sunday locked away chopping, prepping, and cooking over a hot stove when they could enjoy all the benefits without any of the hard work?
The truth is that in York we’re blessed with countless great Sunday Lunch spots, who all offer delicious menus in great locations. Save yourself the time this Sunday by looking at the adverts on these pages where you’ll find the lunch offering for you.
