YORK LIFE YORK SCOUTS HELP TO PROTECT THE PLANET

Scout groups across York have been busy helping the environment recently as part of a global scouting campaign: Promise to the Planet, that aims to inspire young people to take action for the environment. Local scout groups took part in York Environment Week and have gone above and beyond to improve the local area ahead of COP26 (the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties) in Glasgow this month. Copmanthorpe Scouts, in particular, have been taking action all year to help the environment. Led by Dave Webster, the scouts set up extra recycling facilities, recycled Christmas trees, created a Hedgehog Highway, litter picked, sown wildflower seeds and done beach cleaning at Fraisthorpe. Dave Webster, 1st Copmanthorpe Scouts leader, said: “Rather than talking about it and waiting for politicians to change policies, I wanted us to actually do something and to involve the community too.” Other Scout Groups in the area have been doing their bit too. Dringhouses, Elvington, Bishopthorpe and Acomb Scout Groups took part in North Yorkshire Scouts ‘Tidy up the County Day’ by litter picking in their local areas. From Dringhouses Scout Group, Beaver Copmanthorpe Scouts Beach Clean Melissa said: “picking up the litter is good for our planet. But I don’t like people leaving dirt around.” Fellow Beaver, Dorian, said: “It’s important to clean Earth because trees would get sick, and we need trees.” To find out more about the York Ebor District Scouts, visit eborscouts.org.uk. York Youth Council needs YOU!

Are you aged between 11-18? Do you care about issues like the environment, mental health and transforming education? Listen up! York Youth Council is looking for new members to represent the city’s young ‘uns. The organisation meets fortnightly on a Wednesday evening to talk about issues for young people locally, regionally and nationally. Applicants could find themselves involved in campaigns to improve the lives and experiences of young people and make sure that the voice of young people is heard. Being a member of the council opens up the opportunity to discuss issues with elected councillors, leaders in the Children’s and Mental Health teams, the NHS and more. York Youth Council is also affiliated with the British Youth Council and the UK Youth Parliament, which provides regional and national opportunities to get involved with youth politics and even to sit on the green benches of the House of Commons once a year at a special session of Youth Parliament. Cllr Ian Cuthbertson, the council’s Executive Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “York’s Youth Council is a fantastic way through which young people in our city can make sure that their views are heard and acted on. I’d encourage anyone aged 11-18 years of age with an interest in our local area to find out more about how they can get involved.”

York Youth Council is a non-political organisation. Visit yorkyouthcouncil. com for more information or email yorkyouthcouncil@york.gov.uk to find out more about how you can get involved.

Public living room opens in York

There’s a new event in Acomb to meet people, have a chat and swap clothes. The Camerados Public Living Room and Clothes Swap will happen at Acomb Parish Hall on the first Saturday of every month from 9.30am-12pm. Visitors are encouraged to bring good quality unwanted items of clothing and swap for the same number of ‘new to you’ items. If you don’t have clothes to donate, you can pick up items in exchange for a small donation. And for those who just want a cuppa and a chat, you can just turn up, too.
