WALKING WITH
THE WANDERER Welburn and Castle Howard
Starting from the Howardian Hills village of Welburn, this walk goes ‘around the back’ of Castle Howard, passing close-by some of the estate’s notable monuments — including the Temple of the Four Winds, the Mausoleum and the Pyramid. The mix of farm and woodland provides a varied habitat for a range of wildlife including ravens, spotted for the first time in the York area by the Wanderer.
Is This Walk For Me?
Although it isn’t too long, this walk does cover some undulating terrain. The climbs are relatively gentle, but one not far from the start is steep. The entire walk is away from busy trafficked roads and much of it is on tracks with a good surface. However, there are several footpath stretches where the conditions can be muddy and slippery. There are also a few short sections where forging through vegetation is necessary. The route is mainly well signed. There are no stiles.
Getting There
The starting point is the Crown and Cushion pub in Welburn. Considerate roadside parking is available on the village street. Welburn is 13½ miles from York via the A64, turn left shortly after Whitwell-on-the Hill to arrive. There are two Castleline buses to the Crown and Cushion in Welburn from York every morning except Sunday, with two return journeys in the afternoon. It is also possible to get the frequent Coastliner buses that stop on the A64 and walk to the village, however this adds a one mile trek to the start point.
Refreshments
Welburn has the Crown and Cushion pub and Dogh bakery and café, both are open daily.
What To See
As well as the iconic monuments of Castle Howard, this route crosses well cared for countryside. There are shallow valleys with streams, woodland — some of it is newly planted with a mix of trees, and rougher areas that benefit wildlife. There are also views over the Howardian Hills, across the Derwent Valley and the Wolds.

1. With the pub behind you, go left
3. Turn left on the surfaced track.
2. Keeping the main buildings to the right, go left in front of a ruined building (signed High Gaterley). Cross the field to a gate/hedge gap. Go through and walk ahead on the right-hand side of the hedge in front of you. In about 100 metres, turn right over the field towards a pylon. In the next large field head slightly right (small sign on post) exiting over a bridge, follow the path uphill where you’ll notice a scrubby area to the left. Pass through a gate to continue uphill and pass through two further gates with buildings to the left, where you’ll reach a signpost at a track.
4. Continue on this narrow, muddy and somewhat overgrown path until you meet a track. Turn right to reach a white gate — go through and continue by the wall but soon veer away from it to the left to reach a signpost in a dip. Now ascend the grassy hillside to the building (Temple of the Four Winds) visible on the brow. As you get near to the temple, go left down the grassy slope to the ornate bridge.
along the village street. As the houses end just before a 40mph sign, go left through a gate and head diagonally across the field to a hedge corner. Here, go right alongside the hedge. Where this ends, go half-left over a grassy area towards a signpost. Bear left in 40 metres without turning completely to the left, instead turn right (signed Huttons Ambo) on a less obvious path. Descend through a boggy area with tall vegetation to a gate. Keep going at first on a boardwalk to reach a bridge over a stream. Go over and keep ahead into the open area. Keep to its left edge as you climb the slope. At the top, keep ahead on a grass track which will become enclosed as you reach buildings.
When you reach a signpost to Low Gaterley curve left. Stay on that track, heading left after the buildings, before almost immediately turning right onto tarmac. Near the top of a rise in the path, take the signed path right (Coneysthorpe) on a gravel track. Soon you’ll come across some metal barns, when you do turn left (yellow arrow) on a track between railings. Now stay on this track as it crosses a stream, keep to the track as it turns left and crosses a few streams, eventually reaching a house and some barns. Follow the track through the farm buildings, keeping on it at a signpost into trees. Cross another stream and continue with a large grassy area to the right. Ignore a track left. About 150 metres beyond this, by some veteran oak trees, take the path left into trees signed Welburn.
5. Cross the bridge and continue on the track beyond it to reach a

Experience A Christmas Carol at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre Award-winning company NE Theatre are bringing A Christmas Carol to the stage from the 28th of November to December the 2nd. On one lonely Christmas Eve, the merciless moneylender Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three spirits — The Ghost of Christmas Past, The Ghost of Christmas Present, and The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come — who force Scrooge to confront the consequences of his actions. He is so horrified by the hardship he has caused to the family of his clerk Bob Cratchit, that when Scrooge awakes the next morning he is reborn a new-man, showering everyone around him with gifts of generosity — especially Cratchit. STAR SIGN OF THE MONTH: SCORPIO 23RD OCT - 21ST NOV If the front door is closed to you, don’t waste your time banging your head against a brick wall…. Either walk around to the back, or just walk away. There are things which you can achieve at this time, but some things that you can’t – and the secret is

knowing which is which. In arguments, it is easy to get lost in matters of principle, so don’t do this… Rather, concentrate on your own peace of mind and emotional well-being. SAGITTARIUS 22ND NOV - 21ST DEC A quieter month than some you have known this year, perhaps with some feelings of anti-climax when you look back over the last few weeks. On the other hand, this is a lovely time for strengthening relationships and for finding new depths of harmony and meaning. Gentlemen will be looking for the next great adventure, while the sagittarius women will have a better time of it, content to go with the flow without ruffling feathers or getting impatient. CAPRICORN 22ND DEC - 19TH JAN Rather a nice month filled with one or two surprises, and a general feeling of starting out afresh in pursuit of new targets and adventures. Quite a busy month on the work scene, but you rise to the challenges and get yourself noticed in all the right places. An interesting time psychologically as
BY AST RO LO G IST
James Christie
you come to recognise the worth of what you’ve got, which curbs the temptation to be impatient and impulsive. So, a calm few weeks with a few laughs along the way.
AQUARIUS 2OTH JAN - 18TH FEB
Weddings, engagements, celebrations, and interesting (short distance) journeys keep a smile on your face, but that smile covers a hidden mood of frustration and discontent. Yes, you fully appreciate your good fortune and the worth of what you’ve got, but the trouble is that you want more! For some Aquarians this could be power and prestige, while others just get lost in the void of longing for their missspent youth. Welcome to the world of growing up and in some cases, just growing old.
PISCES 19TH FEB - 20TH MAR Something you’ve wanted and have looked forward to for a very long time comes one visible step closer – but this causes some concern! Will you be happy to step aboard that ship of opportunity when it docks in your harbour, or will you get cold feet at the last minute and turn away from the gang plank?
ARIES 21ST MAR - 19TH APR I hope I’m wrong, but this could be a bit of a mean and moody month, you’ll need to fight hard to maintain a positive mental attitude. Lots of unhappy little reminders of bad times gone-by sap your confidence for the future, but just remember that those times HAVE PASSED and today you are on a different pathway heading in a different direction. Where emotional relationships are concerned, don’t be afraid to share your thoughts and feelings. TAURUS 20TH APR - 20TH MAY
New business and career opportunities should help you build on previous successes, this is a time for thinking out of the box and broadening your horizons. Medical matters will work in your favour, and you should find a greater degree of fitness and vitality. Some very nice (and potentially sexy) vibrations in all affairs of the heart, and this should be a very exciting time for singles who are fed up with being single!
GEMINI 21ST MAY - 20TH JUN
Listen, you’re going to be judged by what you do and not by what you say, so remember that
CANCER 21ST JUN - 22ND JUL
If I tell you to watch your back, this is relevant on two levels. On one hand, this is not a month for taking up dangerous sports or trying to redecorate your living room in the theme of the Sistine Chapel, but on the other, avoid gossip, while being aware that people probably are gossiping about you, saying one thing to you face and another thing behind your back. I don’t think there is much you can actually do about this, but just be aware of it.
LEO 23RD JUL - 22ND AUG
You’re likely to come under pressure to make decisions that you are not ready to make – so DON’T make them until you are ready! This will probably annoy and frustrate more than one person close to you, but this should
be seen as their problem and not yours. To counterbalance this, there are some things you very much want to do right now, but because your hands are tied, you must delay and be patient. Not easy for Leos, but do your best!
VIRGO 23RD AUG - 22ND SEPT
HOROSCOPES
actions speak louder than words. November is a month in which you not only have to talk the talk, you’ve got to walk the walk! There’ll be some brisk social activity, especially in the third week, with potential travel commitments in the last seven or ten days. Some problems need to be resolved with companies who do not honour their guarantees and contracts.
Perhaps an unexpected degree of domestic upheaval, especially if you’re involved with any kind of property deals, but also watch out for (a) unexpected guests (b) utilities breaking down and (c) any kind of water ingress. Sorry to sound like the prophet of doom! On a brighter note, this is a highly educational period in which you come to see people and situations for what they really are, not what you might like them to be.
LIBRA 22ND SEPT - 22ND OCT
A lovely month for parent/child relationships, especially mothers and daughters. The accent is on domestic and family issues and as a rogue element there may be news of a pregnancy or a birth. Social aspects are high, particularly around the 5th and 6th with unexpected (and interesting) invitations on both the 11th and the 22nd which could well tie in with a few travel aspects.

BUSINESS
ADVERTORIAL
REVOLUTIONISE YOUR ICE CREAM BUSINESS WITH THE CHEEKY GRIN APP A pioneering company have developed a new mobile app that they expect will fundamentally alter the way that Ice Cream SME’s operate. It will give customers access to previously unavailable information, allowing them to track the movements of ice cream vans so they can be alerted of their arrival in good time. It’s a development that is anticipated to shatter tired-old traditions and open up a completely unheard of level of communication between vendors and their customers. In an age where we can order takeaways at the simple press of a button, fly across the globe in a matter of hours and order pizza delivery by drone— how can it still be, that the only possible means of getting hold of fresh Mr Whippy ice-cream involves chasing a van down the street to the sound of Greensleeves or Nelly-the-Elephant. We’ve all been there, after hearing music playing somewhere off in the distance, you face a brutal race against the clock to find your shoes and catch the van before it disappears down the street. The truth is that more often than not, we return home empty-handed to the vast disappointment of our
children or younger siblings. The more often that disappointment occurs, the more likely those customers are to buy their ice cream from supermarket chains rather than small businesses. The tragic truth for ice-cream vendors is that consumers aren’t patient in the way they once were — they don’t see the point in waiting around and hoping a vendor might show up at some point soon when they’ve become used to rapid and reliable service in essentially every other industry. They’ll much sooner head to a supermarket freezer section or drive over to McDonalds for a McFlurry than risk the awkward battle to find an ice-cream van in time. In the last ten years the number of ice cream vans on our streets have declined by half as costs to produce Mr Whippy increased by as much as 70%, the simple truth is that things cannot go on as they are — our ice cream vendors have to accept it’s time
to move on from those old-age traditions, or face a continued decline in sales. In response, Cheeky Grin have developed an answer that is sure to FINALLY drag the industry forward into the twenty-first century. It’s an app that will create a direct dialogue between customers and vendors, think Uber but for ice cream vans — allowing drivers to inform 30 people at a time where to meet four minutes before the vendor arrives. Even customers who live in high
rise flats or a fair distance from where a van typically stops, can organise with drivers and even view menus ahead of time. The Cheeky Grin App will capture all the sales without any of the stress and rush — giving everyone a chance to enjoy fresh ice cream wherever, whenever they want. If you’re an ice cream vendor interested in signing up to pilot for the Cheeky Grin App, contact Mr. Wilson on 07570020694 or at gingerorourke@hotmail.com.

REPORT York City finally back on the right path By Your Local Link Staff Writer Sammi Minion
Now well into the second month of Neal Ardley’s tenure, York City F.C are finally beginning to look like the kind of team supporters felt they’d been promised in pre-season. This turnaround in fortunes began with a landmark 3-0 victory over fellow-strugglers Southend United — earning York their first three points of the season. The result kick-started a run that's seen the Minstermen lose only once in the last five games. They’ve picked up enough points along the way to sit comfortably in 17th place with a solid six-point buffer from the bottom of the table. Last month Ardley told me that his vital first steps were to ‘get some structure in place — [to] show the players how to pick up some points.’ He’s done exactly that, instilling a win-at-all-costs mentality in the squad. The impact of those words were brilliantly summarised in the dying moments of the 2-1 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge. When awarded a free-kick in the 98th minute, Dan Batty opted to completely wallop the ball all the way out of the stadium, rather than even consider playing it forward to extend City’s lead. While the weeks ahead pose serious challenges, including the visit of local rivals Halifax Town, York City look — at least for now — to be back on track. Follow all the latest updates at www.yourlocallink. co.uk as City face up against Halifax, Hartlepool and Oxford in the coming weeks.

YORK VALKYRIE ARE WOMEN’S GRAND FINAL CHAMPIONS Images by: Ed Sykes/SWpix.com The Valkyrie thrashed local rivals Leeds Rhinos 16-6 in front of a record-breaking crowd at the LNER Community Stadium on October the 8th — to finally get their hands on the biggest prize in the women’s rugby league. The York Valkyrie Director of Rugby, Lindsay Anfield said that “lifting the big trophy this season showed how much pride myself and my players have for this club and city. I think we have shown how one small club can have huge ambition and push boundaries in a way
no other club has done before for the women's game.” The result comes a year after the Rhinos had defeated the Valkyrie in the 2022 final. The dominance of the two Yorkshire sides is no surprise considering they are the only women’s rugby league clubs in Europe to pay their players professional wages, as interest in the sport continues to grow exponentially — this rivalry will continue to push the women’s game even further forward in years to come.

Heworth Tennis Club are our local sports club of the month for November. Heworth were the top performing tennis club in York for 2023 — out of their seven teams that compete in the York League, five have been promoted and two won league titles. The women’s first team won their division at a stroll after completing an unprecedented invincible season — incredibly winning all 12 of their matches. The mixed-gender first team also took one step closer to sporting immortality themselves as they registered 13 wins out of their 14 matches on the way to a second successive division title. Club Chair Erica Town said “it has been an amazing season for all the teams and congratulations went to everyone that contributed and played.” Head to www.clubspark.lta.org.uk/ HeworthTennisClub to read more about the club’s success or to sign up as a member.

A 25-year old swimming pool has been saved from closure by the fundraising efforts of Friends of New Earswick Swimming Pool (FoNESP). The charity raised £50,000 — enabling them to complete the installation of new boilers. FoNESP Chair of Trustees, Andrew Calverley said “The response has been phenomenal. Many people generously supported us with donations, and we received a number of grants too. We’re really thankful and appreciative of everyone who supported us.” Since opening in the 1960s the pool quickly grew into the community institution it is today. Considering it still operates 12 hours a day, seven days a week, closure would have seriously reduced residents’ access to regular exercise.

MAKE YOUR BATHROOM Create some Grand Designs of your own GLEAM AGAIN WE HEAR FROM LOCAL EXPERT MATT TODD
Husband and wife team Lisa and Gary set up Grout Gleam York and Harrogate in August this year, in a move that will bring our readers the benefits of what looks to be the biggest step forward in bathroom and household cleaning this decade. Rather than relying on chemicals, scrubbing brushes and a ton of elbow grease to clean or replace dirty grout, Grout Gleam has a range of nine different coloured compounds that chemically bond to the existing grout and create a uniform grout colour. The method is scientifically proven to have your bathroom grout sparkling in no time at all. They offer the same everlasting service on shower glass — as we know living in Yorkshire means our taps are full of hard water. Through no fault of our own showers can quickly look cloudy and grimy as limescale begins to build up. Fortunately Grout Gleam have specially formulated another compound for bathroom glass — it attacks hard water, limescale and oil deposits on glass. Gary explains “I had tried a range of high street grout cleaning products in the past, promising amazing results, but
they didn't last. Our products, sourced from America and Australia, were actually designed for commercial environments and we know that they work and last. The satisfaction we get from seeing a bathroom, or floor transformation, is great and we love seeing the customers' positive reactions.” While traditional methods are what we’re used to, they only ever deliver temporary shortterm results. A Grout Gleam solution means long-lasting perfection in whatever colour you like. If you’re interested in restoring your bathroom this winter, call Gary up on 01904 900212 or email gary@groutgleam.co.uk for a no-obligation quote.

HAVE YOU GOT A GARDENING QUESTION?
Scott Turner
If you have a question for Scott, please email info@yourlocallink.co.uk Q. I’m looking for some trees with a nice autumn colour to brighten my garden in the future please? You’ve asked me this question at the perfect time — last weekend we went around Thorpe Perrow Arboretum to look at autumn colour trees at their best. I’ve put together a list of my favourites: Acer Grisium “Chinese Paperbark Maple” is famous for its perfectly autumnal peeling and papery orange-brown colouring. It’s a maple with characteristic threeparted leaves that turn orange and red in the autumn. It’s excellent if you plan on growing it in a border or a large lawn. Amelanchier Lamarcii is another magnificent tree and has two main seasons of interest — Spring when the bushy crown is a cloud of white blossom and autumn when it is ablaze with red and orange foliage. This is undoubtedly one of the most reliable trees for autumn colour. Cotinus “Royal Purple” can be a small bushy round-headed tree or a large multi-stemmed shrub. The striking leaves are wine-purple

in summer but transform into a brilliant orange-red later. Large plumes of purplish-pink flowers are produced in summer. Liquidamber “Lane Roberts” is one of the darkest and most reliable of all autumn colouring trees, this handsome specimen has shining green maple-like leaves that turn through a range of colours from pale orange to deep red-purple. Parrotia “Persica”. The Persian ironwood will eventually become a broad spreading tree with piebald bark. It produces small red flower clusters in late winter or early spring, and its glossy green leaves turn yellow, orange and red-purple in autumn. If you’re looking for a local place to purchase your dream tree, or for some assistance with landscaping, make sure to have a good read over the next pages — our advertisers are sure to offer you the best service around.
Q. I believe Fusarium Wilt has killed my passionflower and at least two acres which I have removed. I can’t seem to find any fungicide treatment for this and currently have the soil covered in black plastic, do you
have any advice on how I might treat it, or how long to leave the plastic on before I can replant? Fusarium Wilt affects many plant types, but tomatoes and potatoes are most susceptible. Also known as stem rot, it moves into plants through their roots, and from there it clogs the plant’s passageways, blocking the flow of water, nutrients and vital fluids until the eventual death of the plant. Other Fusarium Pathogens attack different plants such as brassicas palms and many shrubs and trees, unlike other wilt diseases, fusarium wilt often shows up only on one side of a plant branch or leaf. Bottom leaves show symptoms first. As the disease spreads upwards, the plant wilts, turns brown and drops its leaves — stems near the base show clogged vascular pathways and dark brown streaks if you cut them. Once
fusarium wilt infects a plant, there is no effective treatment. Remove and dispose of affected plants immediately. DON’T compost this garden waste. Whenever possible, remove and replace fusariuminfected garden soil. If fusarium wilt hits your garden don’t plant the same related plant types in that area for at least four years. Depending on your climate, it may be possible to control fusarium wilt by “solarizing” your soil. This involves covering it with plastic so that it reaches very high temperatures over a long period (at least a month). Keep your garden tools and boots clean and free from soil contaminated tools. Footwear can spread fusarium pathogens to fresh soil.

PLANTING FRUIT TREES PART 1 PART 2 COMING NEXT MONTH! At this time of the year, interest in growing your own fruit tree— whether in the garden, on the allotment plot or at a public space or ‘community orchard’ — is never higher. The good news is that late autumn and winter are the best time to get new fruit trees in the ground! However the last thing you what to do is waste your time — after all, fruit trees can live for years so it’s worth getting it right. It seems sensible to take a seasonal look at what to consider before getting started. It’s a big topic so we’ll look at where, when and what to plant. This is only part one— there’s more to follow next month! The first issue is whether your proposed planting area is suitable. There are lots of questions here. Is it big enough? Will the trees get enough light? The latter is often overlooked but it’s important to remember that most types of tree fruit need maximum sunshine to ripen and properly develop flavour. Almost conversely we also need to consider the issue of shading. Bigger trees can block light, so when choosing a spot, make sure to carefully consider the rest of the garden or plot and the neighbours. Finally, what about the soil? Fruit trees are tolerant of most ground conditions but will struggle where water-logging occurs or where the
soil is shallow and prone to drying out. As for when to plant, the best time is after leaf fall. Make sure you look up the type of tree you’re growing, as the planting season can depend greatly. It varies all the way from November through to mid-March. When you do get around to buying your tree, it’s best to obtain it ‘bare-rooted’, that is grown by a nursery in the soil and dug up for transplanting. Bare rooted trees can only be planted in the winter when dormant. Trees started this way tend to establish and grow faster than those raised in pots or containers. Personally, I’d never plant a container grown fruit tree, while planting is possible at any time of year, there are several snags. Container-grown trees have roots that spiral rather than spread. This means they’re slow to fan out and have poor anchorage. Firm staking is needed if they’re to remain upright, especially in exposed positions. It can often take years for pot grown trees to settle in. The other initial issue to consider is what type of fruit to plant. I’ll list my favourites in order of ease of cultivation — first it’s apples, then pears, plums and ‘others’. Think carefully about going for something ‘exotic’ like an apricot or peach. Global warming may yet make

these viable in Yorkshire, but in my experience these are unreliable if you try grow them outside. It’s not so much the lack of warmth as the cold springs with bud-busting frosts that are the problem. Ponder too on plums — a juicy Victoria is hard to beat for taste, but plums have disadvantages. Unlike apples and pears, they cannot be stored unless frozen or processed. Resist the temptation to go for nuts like hazel. Unless you can somehow fend off squirrels and rodents, there’ll never be a worthwhile harvest. Generally, if you’re looking to plant more than a handful of trees making the majority of them apples and adding a few pears and plums will give the best return. Perhaps throw in a quince and medlar if you want something out of the ordinary. Finally, of course, it’s what you like. There’s no point in having an orchard full of pears, (for me
the best tree fruit to grow because it’s hard to buy the flavour of a home grown, truly ripe pear), if you don’t like them. Next time in part 2 we’ll be deciding on the form, that is the size and style of fruit tree, and the mysteries of rootstocks and the like.

Try acupuncture treatment today When it comes to treating chronic pain York residents can do no better than The Northern College of Acupuncture (NCA) based right in the centre of York on Micklegate. When the college opened in 1988, they were the first clinic in the country to achieve professional accreditation. While the field of acupuncture has developed a lot since then — the treatment is now recommended by the National Guidelines for Clinical and Healthcare Excellence (NICE) for chronic pain— the NCA have evolved too. They now offer a wide range of services, from traditional Chinese herbal medicine to nutritional advice. As we look ahead to the winter season, we’ve all got more than enough on our minds so the last thing anyone should be doing is continuing to suffer through chronic pain without assistance. Especially when we have a nationally-leading treatment clinic on our doorstep — at a considerably lower fee than most private clinics, a session at their multi-bed Community Acupuncture clinic starts at only £17. The NCA has a car park and full disabled access and the main acupuncture clinic is open from Monday to Friday. Call 01904 343305 to book or visit www.nca.ac.uk/clinics.

YOUR FAMILY & YOU
Could counselling be right for you? Rediscover your ‘Joy’ this November. While we’re working extra hard to prepare properly for Christmas this November, it can be hard to find the time to properly look after yourself. This is especially true for parents, a study for 2021 revealed that on average parents have just 30 minutes of me-time a day! If you or someone you know is finding the season a real mental strain, a great option for getting back on track is counselling. In York we’re especially lucky to have access to the services of Joy Richardson. She’s a qualified coach, mentor and
trainer who focuses her services on adults who are struggling to juggle the demands of parenting with other responsibilities. She helps parents to focus on themselves so they can regain their sense of self and help families flourish. Your journey back to stability could begin with a simple 30 minute discovery phone call. Call up 07745 057 815 now for a conversation regarding your situation and how Joy’s services can help.
CELEBRATE 2024 IN LUXURY AT NOBLE HAPPENINGS’ BALL The boutique events company are hosting the ball at the Assembly Rooms on Blake Street. Attendees will be transported back in time, to the splendour of York’s eighteenth-century high society, at Lord Burlington's party-hotspot from the 1730’s no less. As you walk, dine and dance under the magical chandeliers and the iconic marble pillars you’ll experience life as a real Bridgerton or Downton Abbey

character for one special night. There will be three courses of delectable food, a variety of wines and music to keep guests more than entertained. As midnight approaches, attendees will be able to step outside to watch Great Peter strike twelve with their own eyes. Ticket prices start at £159. Head to www.noblehappenings. co.uk to book your ticket before they sell out!
BRING YOUR HUNT TO AN END It’s impossible to ever do enough preparation before you take the massive decision of choosing your sixth form even though the decision itself couldn’t be any more important — finding the right school makes a vital difference when it comes down to getting into the right university, or applying to your dream apprenticeship or job after school. Trawling through all the details of the schools and colleges in the area, and getting your head around all the statistics, school leaderboards and information can be a confusing nightmare. Huntington Sixth Form — one of York’s leading schools — are providing a refreshing alternative in the shape of an open day on November the 7th. If you are still looking for credentials before attending, 30% of the 2023 A-Level cohort achieved A*-A — that’s more than enough to take your pick of the Russell Group universities or to find the best apprenticeship around. What makes an open day such a
useful resource however, is that you’ll be able to peer past the statistics to see what a school is really like. You have the unmissable chance to hear why Huntington is a great option from the headteacher himself, alongside expert staff — to walk the halls and properly imagine life at the school. After attending you won’t have to rely on what you read from afar, or school leaderboards, to feel assured you’re choosing the right place. If you would like to visit during the November open evening visit www. huntingtonschool.co.uk or call 01904 752100 for more information about the school.
Spreading the Christmas cheer The Lord Mayor and Sheriff have announced a Christmas cheer reception will be held for the city’s over-65 residents at York Assembly Rooms on December the 5th. There’s space for 400 people to attend alongside the Mayor, the Sheriff and some other famous faces from York’s local government— for a
fantastic day of festive fun at a truly iconic York location. All you need to do if you’d like to attend, is fill out the application form we’ve listed on page 39. Make sure you send in an application before the 16th of November, as the names of the lucky attendees will be drawn from a hat on the 17th.

Give us a home Can you help us to find a loving home for these two brilliant characters. Rootin Tootin & Ace High, Both are 6-monthold females Zoomies, sparring, sleeping, eating and repeat! This is the (more than) daily cycle of these two energetic young girls. These beauties joined us after they were brought in as strays along with their mum and their other four siblings. Sadly they were in a pretty poor state when they first arrived, but luckily for them help was granted at just the right time, and they’ve have made a remarkable recovery! You would not think that they had such a tough start in life by the way they live it up now! Avoid Bonfire night FRIGHTS Bonfire night can be a terrifying time for pets and animals— they don’t understand that Guy Fawkes is the only one in danger— so flashing lights and deafening sounds can set off a fight or flight response so they’ll try and bolt fences or act frozen in fear. It’s our responsibility to make the night as easy an experience as possible for the animals in our lives — anything less would be bang out of order. Calming sounds and safe spaces Classical music can be calming for animals and can drown out the scary sounds outdoors — the RSPCA recommend Classic FM’s Pet classics. Before the night you should prepare a safe ‘den’ in a quiet corner with soft bedding or some of
Vicki, a local Invisible Cities tour guide, has made it her mission to shine light on the life and personal story of one of York’s most famous historical residents. While everyone brought up in York has heard the story of Guy Fawkes’ November gunpowder plot at least a thousand times. Beyond that legend, the figure of Fawkes is shrouded in mystery. Vicki’s ‘Story of Guys Fawkes’ city tour takes attendees to all the little-known places within the city that even the locals are generally unaware of — like the church where Guy Fawkes and his sisters were christened. She then interweaves her own personal journey of being diagnosed with stage 4b cancer, treatment, and remission, with the story of Fawkes’ life. Make sure you’re one of the few well informed attendees at your Bonfire night celebration by booking one of Vicki’s tours at www.invisible-cities.org
your old clothes which will smell familiar. Check Bonfires for small animals before lighting For a small animal like a hedgehog, a bonfire pile looks like a comfy place to make their home, so before you light one up make sure to check through the bottom thoroughly by lifting parts of the bonfire section-by-section using a pole or broom. Do not use a fork, spade or rake as this may injure a hedgehog. If you’re worried about your pet make sure to contact your local vet for advice.

Genuine ethical wildlife experiences — where you head in search of amazing animals and have the chance to observe them in their natural habitat — are once in a lifetime opportunities that simply wouldn’t be possible if not for the wonders of the tourism industry. It is always a pleasure to put these kind of experiences together for our clients, here’s a list of a few of our proudest recent examples: A family trip to Costa Rica. Costa Rica offers the opportunity to see an abundance of wildlife including sloths, toucans, hummingbirds & macaws. Our clients were lucky enough to be travelling in August — at the height of the turtle nesting season. Staying in the Tortuguero National Park at the Mawamba lodge was perfect for taking an early morning guided tour to observe female green-turtles nesting. September is the perfect time of the year for bear watching
in Canada. The month sees the salmon swim upstream to spawn, so grizzly & black bears head to the water to fill up on salmon before the cold winter sets in. From the remote lodges in northern British Columbia you also have the opportunity to head out on the water to see migrating orca & humpback whales. Lodge availability for the 2024 salmon run is already very limited so it’s best to think about booking as soon as possible. The Elephant Hills Experience in the Khao Sok National Park in southern Thailand and Chaing Mai in the north. At Elephant Hills nature park, they do not offer elephant riding — as carrying tourists on their back is not a natural thing that elephants do — instead, they offer a much more interactive and respectful way to encounter our phenomenal pachyderms. Since the successful implementation, their guests

have the chance to experience an interactive adventure which beats any elephant ride you might have participated in before. Animal adventures in Africa. Even though getting to see the ‘Big Five’ is on everyone’s travel bucket list, some clients prefer to go off the grid camping with a local guide in Botswana, while others prefer the base of a lodge to end a tour in South Africa. As a result we ensure that no two Africa adventures are the same. For some clients we planned a recent trip for, conservation was of great interest so we liaised with the reserve for our clients to spend time at the wildlife rehabilitation centre and also visit the charity ‘Born Free’ to see the work they do. This was built in around their itinerary to be sure we did not take away from their time attending game drives. Is travel closer to home more

REVIEW: Ate O’Clock A restaurant every York resident should be on first-name-basis with by now
GIFT GUIDE
FESTIVE FOODS
& Seasonal Snacks
An evening at Ate O’Clock is the perfect cure for any of the depressingly-dim and overcast wintery nights to come. It starts from the moment you walk through the brightly-lit outer doorway and are immediately transported away from the cold and rain down an enchanting alleyway, adorned with fairy lights and quintessentially York lanterns (that wouldn’t be out of place indicating the start-point of one of our city’s many ghost tours). While our impression of Ate O’Clock may have been shaped by a particularly cold Tuesday evening — whatever the weather, the food and service make this restaurant an absolute must this winter. The staff are warm and welcoming. The interior decorations are bright and bold. The music is relaxing but not intrusive. It’s all set-up to make the restaurant floor a hotbed for comfort and conversation. This was reflected by the resident restaurant-goers around me, while to my left there was a young couple on a date, to my right there were family meals-out and reunions between old friends. Despite their different ages and circumstances, this cocktail of
diners were all brought there by a shared love for the delicious menu. We wasted no time and got stuck straight into the main course. I opted for the pan-roasted sea bass. It exceeded all the expectations I had — the fish was light but flavourful, such that after slicing through the crispy skin, it simply falls apart under your knife and melts immediately in your mouth. The chefs’ decision to pair the sea bass with a spicy chilli and garlic risotto was another bold but justified choice, adding a necessary punch of flavour next to the delicacy of the sea bass. We then finished off with a portion of velvety sticky toffee pudding and vanilla ice cream. A timeless dessert combination that warmed me up (almost) enough to head happily back out into the dark and cold evening. When it comes to eating out in the next few weeks and months, Ate O’Clock is ideally located, enchantingly decorated, and is clearly a local favourite— my only advice is to make sure it’s on your list for this winter.
